Stanford Center for Assessment, Learning, and Equity (SCALE) provided a commentary on the manuscripts in the first part of this special issue, which highlighted the benefits of edTPA and the necessity for such assessment programs to improve teacher education and strengthen teaching practices. In turn, the authors responded to the SCALE commentary. The authors' responses raise concerns about equity, fairness, and unintended consequences of teacher performance assessments. These responses highlight the need for continued dialogue on ways to improve teacher education and strengthen the teaching profession.

As university supervisors at a large, urban university in the southern US, we examined the ways that the Education Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA) shaped the pedagogic relationships and decision-making processes of our students and ourselves during the spring of 2016. We situated this study of edTPA within the framework of critical policy scholarship (Grace, 1984, cited in Lipman, 2010) by reviewing the role of tests in licensing teachers in the context of the perpetual reform of U.S. education. We drew upon Biesta's (2009) notion that neoliberal accountability trades democratic relationships for consumer relationships and Attick and Boyles' (2016) argument that edTPA resituated student teaching as a marketplace activity. Applying self-study methodology (Samaras & Freese, 2009), we documented our experiences of supervising preservice teachers as they underwent the edTPA submission process. We found the assessment strongly controlled our relationships with our candidates. As supervisors, we became part of our candidates' transaction towards certification. Likewise, our candidates viewed us as arbitrators who could help them align themselves and their work to edTPA's specifications. Nevertheless we found moments that superceded the control of edTPA. We conclude with recommendations that teacher education programs attend closely to their social justice missions and develop new critical pedagogies in the face of the pressure of edTPA.

Public education reformers have created a widespread expectation of school choice among school consumers. School leaders adopt rigorous academic programs, like the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) and Career Programme (CP), to improve their market position in the competitive landscape. While ample research has investigated the nature of school choice policies, few studies have looked directly at marketing language or materials to probe the meanings of the sales pitches used by schools to recruit students for selective enrollment programs. This study aimed to develop understandings of meanings that emerge from the marketing discourses of specialized secondary programs. It draws from document analysis (Prior, 2003) and multi-modal social semiotics (Hodge & Kress, 1988; Kress, 2010) to investigate the marketing of IB Programmes in two U.S. high schools. American schools operate within the quasi-market education system and engender business ideologies meant to attract program participants and supportive parents. The policy discourses of school choice are maneuvered into marketing narratives to shape the 21st century student-subject.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is noted in school reform policy circles as the gold standard of academic excellence. While the presence of IB as a sought-after education vendor has grown in the past decade, the organization has attempted to shake off its image as an elite agency serving only private international schools with its longstanding liberal arts curriculum. As such its turn toward the public sector in the United States with a credential for vocational students appears perplexing and out of step with its product brand, but the newer Career Programme (CP) is marketed as meeting the needs of applied learners in secondary schools. This paper offers a case study of two schools in one US state that adopted the CP, generating IB school enrollments from among talented vocational students while elevating its ranking on the college and career readiness (CCR) score, an annual assessment of postsecondary success. The CCR policy reformers advocate curricular improvements so that all students receive the academic foundations and employability skills needed to thrive in the new economy. Yet the egalitarian discourse of CCR could not be attended to using the CP. In this case study only high-achieving students were advised to participate and enroll in the program.

In this article, we present stories from an experiment in curriculum for doctoral students. We created a course in which doctoral students and faculty gathered to learn and read about doing narrative inquiry (NI) in a seminar while engaged in a narrative inquiry project with prospective teachers. We shared data from our journals that reveal the tensions around race, gender, education, power, and privilege that we negotiated as we learned together. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
