Abstract

This report offers starting points for fulfilling objectives identified by Our Streets Action Committee (OSAC), a Los Angeles-based coalition of organizations focused on transportation equity and mobility justice.The report is organized around four topics:1. Indicators of Mobility (In)Justice explores data tools for visualizing the infrastructure and safety deficits we know overburden many of Los Angeles’ communities of color and low-income neighborhoods.2. Change in Paradigm: Reparative Models of Engagement lays out the shift needed to move urban planning from an extractive practice to a reparative one that builds regenerative cities, as well as examples of how planners and community organizations are accelerating this transition.3. The Funding Analysis examines how the region funds Los Angeles’ street infrastructure development and maintenance and suggests directions for increasing priority investments.4. Political Strategy for Mobility Organizing offers analysis of Los Angeles City Councilmembers’ voting records on mobility issues, along with analysis of opportunities for strategic organizing toward equitable and just mobility improvements.

2. Extended Polarimetric Observations of Chaff using the WSR-88D Weather Radar Network

Abstract

Military chaff is a metallic, fibrous radar countermeasure that is released by aircraft and rockets for diversion and masking of targets. It is often released across the United States for training purposes, and, due to its resonant cut lengths, is often observed on the S-band Weather Surveillance Radar - 1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) network. Efforts to identify and characterize chaff and other non-meteorological targets algorithmically require a statistical understanding of the targets. Previous studies of chaff characteristics have provided important information that has proven to be useful for algorithmic development. However, recent changes to the WSR-88D processing suite have allowed for a vastly extended range of differential reflectivity, a prime topic of previous studies on chaff using weather radar. Motivated by these changes, a new dataset of 2.8 million range gates of chaff from 267 cases across the United States is analyzed. With a better spatiotemporal representation of cases compared to previous studies, new analyses of height dependence, as well as changes in statistics by volume coverage pattern are examined, along with an investigation of the new "full" range of differential reflectivity. Abstract

In an electron wakefield accelerator, an intense laser pulse or charged particle beam excites plasma waves. Under proper conditions, electrons from the background plasma are trapped in the plasma wave and accelerated to ultra-relativistic velocities. We present recent results from a proof-of-principle wakefield acceleration experiment that reveal a unique synergy between a laser-driven and particle-driven accelerator: a high-charge laser-wakefield accelerated electron bunch can drive its own wakefield while simultaneously drawing energy from the laser pulse via direct laser acceleration. This process continues to accelerate electrons beyond the usual decelerating phase of the wakefield, thus reaching much higher energies. We find that the 10-centimeter-long nanoparticle-assisted wakefield accelerator can generate 340 pC, 10.4+-0.6 GeV electron bunches with 3.4 GeV RMS convolved energy spread and 0.9 mrad RMS divergence. It can also produce bunches with lower energy, a few percent energy spread, and a higher charge. This synergistic mechanism and the simplicity of the experimental setup represent a step closer to compact tabletop particle accelerators suitable for applications requiring high charge at high energies, such as free electron lasers or radiation sources producing muon beams.

6. Using a Multidisciplinary, Multi-Method and Collaborative Research Design to Investigate the Health Communication Power of the Early Childhood Sector

Abstract

This paper details the research design of a multidisciplinary, multi-method, collaborative research project investigating health communication from the experiences of the early childhood education (ECE) sector during the COVID-19 pandemic. With the rapidly evolving pandemic, the ECE sector was instantly tasked with expanding their required health practices to prevent the spread of infection. It was evident that the sector needed a system to communicate health advice in a timely, consistent and effective manner. Founded on a partnership model based on 'knowledge brokering' theory, this project demonstrates the value of a multidisciplinary research team collaborating with stakeholder organisations to investigate how COVID-19 health information traversed through complexities of organisational layers and diverse communities of families and staff. Detailing our data collection and analysis protocols, we conclude by outlining how our innovative research design is generating actionable and impactful recommendations for both the ECE and health sectors.

Abstract

The interaction of an intense laser with a solid foil target can drive [Formula: see text] TV/m electric fields, accelerating ions to MeV energies. In this study, we experimentally observe that structured targets can dramatically enhance proton acceleration in the target normal sheath acceleration regime. At the Texas Petawatt Laser facility, we compared proton acceleration from a [Formula: see text] flat Ag foil, to a fixed microtube structure 3D printed on the front side of the same foil type. A pulse length (140-450 fs) and intensity ((4-10) [Formula: see text] W/cm[Formula: see text]) study found an optimum laser configuration (140 fs, 4 [Formula: see text] W/cm[Formula: see text]), in which microtube targets increase the proton cutoff energy by 50% and the yield of highly energetic protons ([Formula: see text] MeV) by a factor of 8[Formula: see text]. When the laser intensity reaches [Formula: see text] W/cm[Formula: see text], the prepulse shutters the microtubes with an overcritical plasma, damping their performance. 2D particle-in-cell simulations are performed, with and without the preplasma profile imported, to better understand the coupling of laser energy to the microtube targets. The simulations are in qualitative agreement with the experimental results, and show that the prepulse is necessary to account for when the laser intensity is sufficiently high.

Abstract

BackgroundAcceptability of digital mental health interventions is a significant predictor of treatment-seeking behavior and engagement. However, acceptability has been conceptualized and operationalized in various ways, which decreases measurement precision and leads to heterogeneous conclusions about acceptability. Standardized self-report measures of acceptability have been developed, which have the potential to ameliorate these problems, but none have demonstrated evidence for validation among Black communities, which limits our understanding of attitudes toward these interventions among racially minoritized groups with well-documented barriers to mental health treatment. ObjectiveThis study aims to examine the psychometric validity and reliability of one of the first and most widely used measures of acceptability, the Attitudes Towards Psychological Online Interventions Questionnaire, among a Black American sample. MethodsParticipants (N=254) were recruited from a large southeastern university and the surrounding metropolitan area and completed the self-report measure via a web-based survey. A confirmatory factor analysis using mean and variance adjusted weighted least squares estimation was conducted to examine the validity of the underlying hierarchical 4-factor structure proposed by the original authors of the scale. An alternative, hierarchical 2-factor structure model and bifactor model were examined for comparative fit. ResultsThe findings indicated that the bifactor model demonstrated a superior fit (comparative fit index=0.96, Tucker-Lewis index=0.94, standardized root mean squared residual=0.03, and root mean square error of approximation=0.09) compared with both 2- and 4-factor hierarchical structure models. ConclusionsThe findings suggest that, within a Black American sample, there may be greater utility in interpreting the Attitudes Towards Psychological Online Interventions Questionnaire subscales as attitudinal constructs that are distinct from the global acceptability factor. The theoretical and practical implications for culturally responsive measurements were explored.

Abstract

Breast cancer is the most common invasive cancer in women, affecting more than 10% of women worldwide. Microscopic analysis of a biopsy remains one of the most important methods to diagnose the type of breast cancer. This requires specialized analysis by pathologists, in a task that i) is highly time- and cost-consuming and ii) often leads to nonconsensual results. The relevance and potential of automatic classification algorithms using hematoxylin-eosin stained histopathological images has already been demonstrated, but the reported results are still sub-optimal for clinical use. With the goal of advancing the state-of-the-art in automatic classification, the Grand Challenge on BreAst Cancer Histology images (BACH) was organized in conjunction with the 15th International Conference on Image Analysis and Recognition (ICIAR 2018). A large annotated dataset, composed of both microscopy and whole-slide images, was specifically compiled and made publicly available for the BACH challenge. Following a positive response from the scientific community, a total of 64 submissions, out of 677 registrations, effectively entered the competition. From the submitted algorithms it was possible to push forward the state-of-the-art in terms of accuracy (87%) in automatic classification of breast cancer with histopathological images. Convolutional neuronal networks were the most successful methodology in the BACH challenge. Detailed analysis of the collective results allowed the identification of remaining challenges in the field and recommendations for future developments. Abstract

"The term 'research' is inextricably linked to European imperialism and colonialism. The word itself 'research' is probably one of the dirtiest words in the Indigenous world's vocabulary" (Smith, 1999, p. 1). For many Aboriginal communities educational research can be seen with suspicion. In Aboriginal education much of the research is completed by non-Aboriginal researchers whose interpretations maybe culturally biased against Aboriginal peoples and their research may not always go back to support the Aboriginal audience. This paper will highlight the importance of capacity building of Aboriginal researchers to investigate issues within Aboriginal education. Engaging culturally similar researchers to the research participants can base the research process on an equal foundation in the research practice. With the analysis founded through similar cultural filters of the participatory audience (such as Aboriginal students and/or community). Through building Aboriginal culturally sound researchers to walk the bi-cultural pathways of research between Aboriginal communities and non-Aboriginal institutions a more informed examination of the research material can be presented. This position that there is a greater need for Aboriginal educational researchers to be developed to investigate researcher questions in partnership with Aboriginal communities has grown through the development of my PhD research study on "What Form(s) of Pedagogy are Necessary for Increasing the Engagement of Aboriginal School Students?" (Donovan, 2016).

We modify a classical construction of Bousfield and Kan to define the Adams tower of a simplicial nonunital commutative algebra over a field k. We relate this construction to Radulescu-Banu's cosimplicial resolution, and prove that all connected simplicial algebras are complete with respect to Andr\'e-Quillen homology.
