Many research studies on the effect of organizational factors on training transfer have been conducted, but few studies have considered the effect that different training delivery methods have on training transfer. This study sought to identify if there is any difference in the perceived transfer of training between traditional classroom instruction learners and computer-based instruction learners. Other demographic variables (e.g., years of work experience, age, level of education, years of experience as a supervisor, online course experience, and gender) also were investigated to assess their influence of the transfer of training. The study results revealed that training delivery methods did not make any significant difference in the transfer of training while several demographic variables were associated with significant differences in some of the five subcategories of training transfer construct (organizational support, supervisory support, peer support, motivation, and self-efficacy). Abstract The presence of a diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI)–fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) mismatch holds potential value in identifying candidates for recanalization treatment. However, the visual assessment of DWI–FLAIR mismatch is subject to limitations due to variability among raters, which affects accuracy and consistency. To overcome these challenges, we aimed to develop and validate a deep learning-based classifier to categorize the mismatch. We screened consecutive acute ischemic stroke patients who underwent DWI and FLAIR imaging from a four stroke centers. Two centers were used for model development and internal testing (derivation cohort), while two independent centers served as external validation cohorts. We developed Convolutional Neural Network-based classifiers for two binary classifications: DWI–FLAIR match versus non-match (Label Set I) and match versus mismatch (Label Set II). A total of 2369 patients from the derivation set and 679 patients from two external validation sets (350 and 329 patients) were included in the analysis. For Label Set I, the internal test set AUC was 0.862 (95% CI 0.841–0.884, with external validation AUCs of 0.829 (0.785–0.873) and 0.835 (0.790–0.879). Label Set II showed higher performance with internal test AUC of 0.934 (0.911–0.957) and external validation AUCs of 0.883 (0.829–0.938) and 0.913 (0.876–0.951). A deep learning-based classifier for the DWI–FLAIR mismatch can be used to diminish subjectivity and support targeted decision-making in the treatment of acute stroke patients.

Myogenic regulator factors (MRFs) are essential for skeletal muscle development in vertebrates, including fish. This study aimed to characterize the role of myogenic regulatory factor 4 (MRF4) in muscle development in Nile tilapia by cloning NT-MRF4 from muscle tissues. To explore the function of NT-MRF4, CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing was employed. The NT-MRF4 cDNA was 1146 bp long and had encoded 225 amino acids, featuring a myogenic basic domain, a helix-loop-helix domain, and a nuclear localization signal. NT-MRF4 mRNA was exclusively expressed in adult muscle tissues, with expression also observed during embryonic and larval stages. Food-deprived Nile tilapia exhibited significantly lower NT-MRF4 mRNA levels than the controls while re-feeding markedly increased expression. The CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing of NT-MRF4 successfully generated two types of gene disruption, leading to a frame-shift mutation in the NT-MRF4 protein. Expression analysis of MRF and MEF2 genes in gene-edited (GE) Nile tilapia revealed that MyoG expressions nearly doubled compared to wild-type (WT) fish, suggesting that MyoG compensates for the loss of MRF4 function. Additionally, MEF2b, MEF2d, and MEF2a expressions significantly increased in GE Nile tilapia, supporting continued muscle development. Overall, these findings suggest that NT-MRF4 regulates muscle development, while MyoG may compensate for its inactivation to sustain normal muscle growth.

Abstract The olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, also known as the Korean halibut, is an economically important flatfish in East Asian countries. Here, we provided four fully phased genome assemblies of two different olive flounder individuals using high-fidelity long-read sequencing and their parental short-read sequencing data. We obtained 42–44 Gb of ~15-kb and ~Q30 high-fidelity long reads, and their assembly quality values were ~53. We annotated ~30 K genes, ~170-Mb repetitive sequences, and ~3 M 5-methylcytosine positions for each genome assembly, and established a graph-based draft pan-genome of the olive flounder. We identified 5 M single-nucleotide variants and 100 K structural variants with their genotype information, where ~13% of the variants were possibly fixed in the two Korean individuals. Based on our chromosome-level genome assembly, we also explored chromosome evolution in the Pleuronectiformes family, as reported earlier. Our high-quality genomic resources will contribute to future genomic selection for accelerating the breeding process of the olive flounder.

The authors examined the measurement equivalence of the Multidimensional Work Ethic Profile (MWEP) across the diverse cultures of Korea, Mexico, and the United States. Korean- and Spanish-language versions of the MWEP were developed and evaluated relative to the original English version of the measure. Confirmatory factor analytic results indicated measurement invariance across samples drawn from each country. Further analyses indicated potential substantive differences for some of the seven subscales of the MWEP across samples. The implications of these findings and directions for future research are presented. (Contains 4 tables.)

Instructional condition has been an important area of study to improve learner satisfaction and learning outcomes within public and private organizations. Among various types of learning methods satisfying the online learner's learning styles, this study examined the effect of flexible learning delivery format on learning and application of learning made by a group of Human Resource Development (HRD) undergraduate students. Quantitative data analysis results revealed a flexible learning delivery format did not influence online learners' perceived learning. From a qualitative data analysis, however, various reasons why online learners' attained high or low degree of perceived learning and application of learning were analyzed and categorized. Discussions about instructional conditions and strategies to enhance learning and the application of learning for online curriculum are included.

This paper introduces a recently developed e-learning design and development tool called Learning Designer[TM] (version 1.0). Learning Designer assists learning designers and developers to build e-learning courses with Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) compliant learning objects using decision-making aids and recommended templates based on modern learning theories. Learning Designer assumes that learning is an active construction process as a learner participates in learning activities. Therefore, in this paper, a learning object is defined as a combination of content objects and learning activity objects. After six months of intense research on an e-learning design and development process, an explicit and standardized design and development process was identified, as was a tool to support the development process. Learning Designer includes four distinguishing features. First, it provides a step-by-step decision-making process for content design and development, with recommended templates based on learning theories and content design principles. Second, it employs customized learning sequencing of content and learning activity objects based on learning models. Third, it utilizes a guided metadata generator that meets the SCORM standards. Fourth, Learning Designer provides an embedded automatic manifest file generator that allows instructional designers to develop learning objects without having the technical knowledge to code manifest files for these learning objects. Background The aim of this study is to examine the clinical and pathological attributes of nasopharyngeal tuberculosis.Methods We conducted a retrospective analysis of the clinicopathologic characteristics of nasopharyngeal tuberculosis in 14 patients. The medical records and imaging data obtained between March 2004 and February 2023 were scrutinized. During the pathological review, we classified the types of granulomatous inflammation and graded the extent of caseation.Results Results indicate a 100% female predominance, with chief complaints including hearing loss, postnasal drip, and nasal obstruction. Cervical lymphadenopathy occurred in 21.4% of patients. Chest radiograph abnormalities were found in 58.3%, with three showing active pulmonary tuberculosis. Endoscopic examination revealed three types of lesions, and CT/MRI findings correlated with gross lesions. A statistically significant association was found between lesion characteristics (bulging, ulcerative, necrotic) and pathology patterns (sarcoidosis-like, caseation). Bulging masses exhibited sarcoidosis-like patterns, while ulcerative/necrotic lesions were often associated with caseation. All lesions responded well to over six months of anti-tuberculosis medication, leading to favourable outcomes.Conclusion We studied 14 cases of nasopharyngeal tuberculosis, mostly in females, with common ear and nose symptoms. Lesions were typically visible on nasopharyngeal endoscopy, and endoscopically bulging mass-like lesions had pathologically sarcoidosis-like granulomas. All patients had favourable outcomes.

Many studies have been conducted to verify the effect of learner characteristics and motivation in traditional classrooms, but very few are found in online learning research. This study sought to identify what learner characteristics and motivation types affected a group of undergraduate students' learning and application of learning for a course conducted online. Utilizing quantitative and qualitative analyses, the study found that gender and employment status affected online learners' learning and learning application. Several motivation variables were also found to significantly influence online learners' learning application. Discussions of instructional strategies to promote learner motivation and satisfaction in online learning environment were included.

A study of 10 Korean human resource practitioners who were trained in performance improvement technology showed they achieved better transfer in the conceptual than the technical domain. Transfer increased when trainees set goals to apply learning and the job, received work assignments related to the training, and had supervisor support. (Contains 32 references.) (SK)

Background Perfusion imaging (PI) serves as a valuable tool for triaging patients with acute ischemic stroke for endovascular treatment (EVT). This study aims to investigate trends in PI use and its impacts on EVT rates and clinical outcomes, particularly focusing on variations across different time windows. Methods Data from a prospective, nationwide, acute stroke registry in South Korea were analyzed retrospectively. PI was regarded as treatment‐decision imaging when conducted either (1) prior to EVT, or (2) within 3 hours from hospital arrival in patients not receiving EVT. The study spanned 3 epochs: 2011–2014, 2015–2017, and 2018–2021. Based on the time from onset to arrival, patients were categorized into 2 time windows: early (0–6 hours) and late (6–24 hours). We evaluated EVT rates and clinical outcomes in patients with anterior large vessel occlusion. Results From 2011 to 2021 among 49 449 patients with acute ischemic stroke presenting within 24 hours of onset, PI use rates declined from 36.9% to 30.1%. In the early window, rates dropped from 48.4% to 32.4%, whereas in the late window, they increased from 23.5% to 27.8%. Factors such as older age, atrial fibrillation, anterior large vessel occlusion, and severe stroke were associated with higher rates in the late window. Conversely, younger age and male sex were associated with higher rates in the early window. For patients with anterior large vessel occlusion, PI use increased the likelihood of receiving EVT in the late window and minimized the risk of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage in the early window. However, 3‐month functional outcomes and mortality were. unaffected. Conclusion The study revealed distinct trends in PI use across early and late time windows, indicating varying roles of PI in these time frames. However, the definitive value and necessity of PI in guiding EVT decision‐making remain unclear, underscoring the need for further research

Purpose Recent studies have demonstrated the usefulness of diffusion-weighted MR neurography (DW MRN) for assessing nerve roots. This study aimed to evaluate the utility of DW MRN with a unidirectional motion-probing gradient (MPG) for the lumbar nerve roots at 1.5T MR. Materials and Methods Sixty-four lumbar spine MRI scans with DW MRN using anteroposterior unidirectional MPG were retrospectively analyzed. Any changes in the 512 lumbar spinal nerve roots from L3 to S1 were evaluated using T2-weighted imaging (T2WI), contrast- enhanced T1-weighted imaging (CE T1WI), and DW MRN, with agreement and correlation analysis. Results T2WI revealed compression of 78 nerve roots, and CE T1WI revealed 52 instances of nerve root enhancement. Sixty-seven nerve roots showed swelling and hyperintensity on DW MRN. A total of 42 nerve roots showed changes in the CE T1WI and DW MRN sequences. Moderate to substantial agreement and moderate positive correlation were observed between DW MRN and CE T1WI, as well as DW MRN and T2WI (κ = 0.59–0.65, ρ = 0.600–0.653). Conclusion DW MRN with unidirectional anteroposterior MPG can help evaluate neuritisrelated changes in spinal nerve roots and could serve as a sequence capable of complementing or substituting gadolinium CE imaging.

While the pet market is continuously rapidly increasing in Korea, pet dog owners feel uncomfortable in coping with pet dog’s health problems in time. In this paper, we propose a pre-diagnosis system based on neuro-fuzzy learning, enabling non-expert users to monitor their pets’ health by inputting observed symptoms. To develop such a system, we form a disease–symptom database based on several textbooks with veterinarians’ guidance and filtering. The system offers likely disease predictions and recommended coping strategies based on fuzzy inference. We evaluated three fuzzy inference algorithms—PFCM-R, FHAL, and MNFL. While PFCM-R achieved high accuracy with clean data, it struggled with noisy inputs. FHAL showed better noise tolerance but lower precision. PFCM-R is a variant of well-known fuzzy unsupervised learner FCM, and FHAL is the hybrid fuzzy inference engine based on Fuzzy Association Memory and a double-layered FCM we developed. To make the system more robust, we propose the multi-layered neuro-fuzzy learner (MNFL) in this paper, which effectively weakens the association strength between the disease and the observed symptoms, less related to the body part on which the abnormal symptoms are observed. In experiments that are designed to examine how the inference system reacts under increasing noisy input from the user, MNFL achieved 98% accuracy even with non-erroneous inputs, demonstrating superior robustness to other inference engines. This system empowers pet owners to detect health issues early, improving the quality of care and fostering more informed interactions with veterinarians, ultimately enhancing the well-being of companion animals.

Background and objectives: The development of a five-in-one vaccine microneedle patch (five-in-one MN patch) aims to address challenges in administering vaccines against Diphtheria (DT), Tetanus (TT), Pertussis (wP), Hepatitis B (HBsAg), and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib). Combining multiple vaccines into a single patch offers a novel solution to improve vaccine accessibility, stability, and delivery efficiency, particularly in resource-limited settings. Methods: The five-in-one MN patch consists of four distinct microneedle arrays: DT and TT vaccines are coated together on one array, while wP, HepB, and Hib vaccines are coated separately on individual arrays. The patch was tested for long-term stability (12 months at 25 °C) and evaluated for immunogenicity in mice and minipigs. Antibody titers were measured using ELISA to compare immune responses between microneedle-based delivery and traditional intramuscular (IM) injection. Results: The five-in-one MN patch demonstrated stable antigenicity for up to 12 months at room temperature. In animal studies, the patch induced antibody titers comparable to traditional IM injections for all vaccines. Notably, immunogenic responses to Pertussis and Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccines via microneedles were reported for the first time. The patch facilitated the simultaneous yet independent delivery of vaccines, preserving their immunogenicity without interference. Conclusions: The five-in-one MN patch represents a significant advancement in vaccine delivery by enabling stable, minimally invasive, and efficient immunization. Its innovative design addresses the critical limitations of combination vaccines and has the potential to enhance vaccine accessibility in low- and middle-income countries. Future studies will focus on optimizing patch application techniques and evaluating broader clinical applicability.

Abstract Fungus ball is the most common form of non-invasive fungal sinusitis, and maxillary sinus is the most commonly involved site. Maxillary sinus fungus ball (MFB) accounts for a considerable proportion of unilateral maxillary sinusitis. The prevalence of MFB has recently increased; however, its contributing factors are unclear. This study analyzed the association between MFB and dental implants. One hundred one patients who underwent unilateral maxillary sinus surgery were divided into two groups based on surgical biopsy results: unilateral bacterial sinusitis (UBS, n = 45) and MFB (n = 56). Stratified random sampling of 30 patients from each group was performed to adjust for age. The number of dental implants on maxillary teeth and degree of penetration into the maxillary sinus was radiologically evaluated. The number of patients with dental implants was greater (P = 0.085) and the number of implants was significantly higher (P = 0.031) in the MFB group. Dental implant can be a potential risk factor for MFB development. Therefore, dental implant surgeons should take caution in penetrating the maxillary sinus floor during implant insertion and otolaryngologists should consider the possibility of fungus ball when assessing patients with sinusitis who have dental implants.

Abstract Quantum computers offer significant potential for complex system analysis, yet their application in large systems is hindered by limitations such as qubit availability and quantum hardware noise. While the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) was proposed to address these issues, its scalability remains limited. Many efforts, including new ansätze and Hamiltonian modifications, have been made to overcome these challenges. In this work, we introduced the novel Fragment Molecular Orbital/Variational Quantum Eigensolver (FMO/VQE) algorithm. This method combines the fragment molecular orbital (FMO) approach with VQE and efficiently utilizes qubits for quantum chemistry simulations. Employing the UCCSD ansatz, the FMO/VQE achieved an absolute error of just 0.053 mHa with 8 qubits in a $${{\text{H}}}_{24}$$ H 24 system using the STO-3G basis set, and an error of 1.376 mHa with 16 qubits in a $${{\text{H}}}_{20}$$ H 20 system with the 6-31G basis set. These results indicated a significant advancement in scalability over conventional VQE, maintaining accuracy with fewer qubits. Therefore, our FMO/VQE method exemplifies how integrating fragment-based quantum chemistry with quantum algorithms can enhance scalability, facilitating more complex molecular simulations and aligning with quantum computing advancements.

Perlucin is a shell matrix protein that plays a significant role in regulating shell biomineralization. This study aimed to isolate and characterize the perlucin gene and analyze its expression to explore its role in shell formation, regeneration, and responses to thermal stress and starvation in Pacific abalone. The isolated full-length cDNA sequence of Hdh-Perlucin is 1002 bp long, encoding a 163-amino-acid polypeptide with a signal peptide. The mature peptide of Hdh-Perlucin contains a C-type lectin domain with signature motif and six conserved cysteine residues. Gene Ontology analysis suggests that Hdh-Perlucin exhibits carbohydrate-binding activity. Significantly higher expression of Hdh-Perlucin was observed during the juvenile, veliger, and trochophore stages, compared with cell division stage during early development. Upregulated expression was recorded from slow to rapid growth phases and during shell biomineralization, while downregulated expression was noted during starvation. Under thermal stress, expression peaked at 30 °C and 25 °C for 6 and 12 h, respectively, while consistently higher levels were observed at 15 °C throughout the experiment. This study provides the first comprehensive structural and expression analysis of Hdh-Perlucin, highlighting its roles in metamorphosis, shell formation and regeneration, and responses to heat stress and starvation in abalone.

Objectives. Cochlear implants are widely used for hearing rehabilitation in patients with profound sensorineural hearing loss. However, Cochlear implants have variable results, and central neural plasticity is considered to be a reason for this variability. We hypothesized that resting-state cortical networks play a role in conditions of profound hearing loss and are affected by cochlear implants. To investigate the resting-state neuronal networks after cochlear implantation, we acquired 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography (PET) images in experimental animals. Methods. Eight adult domestic cats were enrolled in this study. The hearing threshold of the animals was within the normal range, as measured by auditory evoked potential. They were divided into control (n=4) and hearing loss (n=4) groups. Hearing loss was induced by co-administration of ethacrynic acid and kanamycin. FDG-PET was performed in a normal hearing state and 4 and 11 months after the deafening procedure. Cochlear implantation was performed in the right ear, and electrical cochlear stimulation was performed for 7 months (from 4 to 11 months after the deafening procedure). PET images were compared between the two groups at the three time points. Results. Four months after hearing loss, the auditory cortical area’s activity decreased, and activity in the associated visual area increased. After 7 months of cochlear stimulation, the superior marginal gyrus and cingulate gyrus, which are components of the default mode network, showed hypermetabolism. The inferior colliculi showed hypometabolism. Conclusion. Resting-state cortical activity in the default mode network components was elevated after cochlear stimulation. This suggests that the animals’ awareness level was elevated after hearing restoration by the cochlear implantation.

Abstract Invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells are a subset of T cells that are characterized by a restricted T-cell receptor (TCR) repertoire and a unique ability to recognize glycolipid antigens. These cells are found in all tissues, and evidence to date suggests that they play many immunological roles in both homeostasis and inflammatory conditions. The latter include lung inflammatory diseases such as asthma and infections: the roles of lung-resident iNKT cells in these diseases have been extensively researched. Here, we provide insights into the biology of iNKT cells in health and disease, with a particular focus on the role of pulmonary iNKT cells in airway inflammation and other lung diseases.

In Korea, Korea Proven Bulls (KPN) program has been well-developed. Breeding and evaluation of cows are also an essential factor to increase earnings and genetic gain. This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of cow breeding value by using three methods (pedigree index [PI], pedigree-based best linear unbiased prediction [PBLUP], and genomic-BLUP [GBLUP]). The reference population (n = 16,971) was used to estimate breeding values for 481 females as a test population. The accuracy of GBLUP was 0.63, 0.66, 0.62 and 0.63 for carcass weight (CWT), eye muscle area (EMA), back-fat thickness (BFT), and marbling score (MS), respectively. As for the PBLUP method, accuracy of prediction was 0.43 for CWT, 0.45 for EMA, 0.43 for MS, and 0.44 for BFT. Accuracy of PI method was the lowest (0.28 to 0.29 for carcass traits). The increase by approximate 20% in accuracy of GBLUP method than other methods could be because genomic information may explain Mendelian sampling error that pedigree information cannot detect. Bias can cause reducing accuracy of estimated breeding value (EBV) for selected animals. Regression coefficient between true breeding value (TBV) and GBLUP EBV, PBLUP EBV, and PI EBV were 0.78, 0.625, and 0.35, respectively for CWT. This showed that genomic EBV (GEBV) is less biased than PBLUP and PI EBV in this study. In addition, number of effective chromosome segments (Me) statistic that indicates the independent loci is one of the important factors affecting the accuracy of BLUP. The correlation between Me and the accuracy of GBLUP is related to the genetic relationship between reference and test population. The correlations between Me and accuracy were −0.74 in CWT, −0.75 in EMA, −0.73 in MS, and −0.75 in BF, which were strongly negative. These results proved that the estimation of genetic ability using genomic data is the most effective, and the smaller the Me, the higher the accuracy of EBV.

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) testing for human body model tests is an essential part of the reliability evaluation of electronic/electrical devices and components. However, global environmental concerns have called for the need to replace the mercury-wetted relay switches, which have been used in ESD testers. Therefore, herein, we propose an ESD tester using metal oxide semiconductor-controlled thyristor (MCT) devices with a significantly higher rising rate of anode current (di/dt) characteristics. These MCTs, which have a breakdown voltage beyond 3000 V, were developed through an in-house foundry. As a replacement for the existing mercury relays, the proposed ESD tester with the developed MCT satisfies all the requirements stipulated in the JS-001 standard for conditions at or below 2000 V. Moreover, unlike traditional relays, the proposed ESD tester does not generate resonance; therefore, no additional circuitry is required for resonant removal. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed ESD tester is the first study to meet the JS-001 specification by applying a new switch instead of an existing mercury-wetted relay.

Compared the perceived degree of learning and application of learning made by college students who took a course in either traditional classroom, Web-based, or satellite-based delivery format and identified reasons for high or low learning and application. Abstract Objectives This study aimed to evaluate the characteristics and treatment outcomes of inverted papillomas involving the frontal sinus. Methods Patients treated for inverted papilloma involving the frontal sinus between 2003 and 2020 were reviewed. Tumors were classified based on their extent (Extent 1: partially encroaching on the frontal sinus; Extent 2: completely filling the frontal sinus; Extent 3: eroding bony borders beyond the frontal sinus) and site of origin (Origin 1: originating outside the frontal sinus and prolapsing into the frontal sinus; Origin 2: originating from the frontal sinus walls medial to the vertical plane of the lamina papyracea; Origin 3: originating from the frontal sinus walls lateral to the vertical plane of the lamina papyracea). Treatment outcomes including tumor recurrence and patency of the frontal recess were analyzed according to tumor characteristics and surgical treatment modalities. Results A total of 49 surgical cases were analyzed. Extent 1 were the most common type (n = 27), followed by Extent 2 (n = 15), and Extent 3 (n = 7). The most common sites of origin were Origin 1 (n = 23), followed by Origin 2 (n = 15), and Origin 3 (n = 11). Overall, there were nine recurrences (18.4%). Recurrence was not associated with tumor extent, whereas tumor origin, particularly Origin 3 was associated with higher recurrence; 1/23 (4.3%) for Origin 1, 3/15 (20.0%) for Origin 2, and 5/11 (45.5%) for Origin 3 (Log‐rank p

The temperature distribution inside a radiant heater for cooking purposes has not yet been fully investigated. A numerical methodology was developed to analyze the heat transfer inside a radiant heater. The numerical methodology was validated by experimental analysis, which showed close agreement for the temperature distributions of the heating coil and glass. Then, a parametric study was performed on the pitch of the heating coil, gaps in the inner coil (i.e., inner gap), and gaps in the outer coil (i.e., outer gap). The outer gap had an insignificant effect on the temperature distribution, but the coil and glass temperatures increased linearly as the pitch and inner gap were decreased. The design of the radiant heater was then optimized in terms of thermal stability. A heat loss analysis was carried out, and the numerical results showed close agreement with the experimental results in the case of 10 % heat loss. The results of this study can be used to predict the performance of a radiant heater and optimize its design.

Focusing high marble deposition, Hanwoo feedlot system uses high-energy diet over the prolonged fattening period. However, due to the individual genetic variation, around 40% of them are graded into inferior quality grades (QG), despite they utilized the same resources. Therefore, focusing on development of a nutrigenomic based precision management model, this study was to evaluated the response to the divergent selection on genetic merit for marbling score (MS), under different dietary total digestible nutrient (TDN) levels. Total of 111 calves were genotyped and initially grouped according to estimated breeding value (high and low) for marbling score (MS-EBV). Subsequently, managed under two levels of feed TDN%, over the calf period, early, middle, and final fattening periods following 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. Carcasses were evaluated for MS, Back fat thickness (BFT) and Korean beef quality grading standard. As the direct response to the selection was significant, the results confirmed the importance of initial genetic grouping of Hanwoo steers for MS-EBV. However, dietary TDN level did not show an effect (p > 0.05) on the MS. Furthermore, no genetic-by-nutrition interaction for MS (p > 0.05) was also observed. The present results showed no correlation response on BFT (p > 0.05), which indicates that the selection based on MS-EBV can be used to enhance the MS without undesirable effect on BFT. Ultimate turnover of the Hanwoo feedlot operation is primarily determined by the QGs. The present model shows that the initial grouping for MS-EBV increased the proportion of carcasses graded for higher QGs (QG1++ and QG1+) by approximately 20%. Moreover, there appear to be a potential to increase the proportion of QG 1++ animals among the high-genetic group by further increasing the dietary energy content. Overall, this precision management strategy suggests the importance of adopting an MS based initial genetic grouping system for Hanwoo steers with a subsequent divergent management based on dietary energy level.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the alteration of PAP compliance after nasal surgery and to determine the optimal indications of nasal surgery in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) subjects. Among OSA subjects using PAP devices, 29 subjects who underwent septoturbinoplasty due to nasal obstruction were included and their pre- and postoperative medical and PAP records were reviewed retrospectively. Postoperative autoPAP usage data was further assessed by grouping the compliance (the percentage of days with usage ≥ 4 h) data (group 1: the good compliance group; group 2: the poor compliance group). The data showed that 56% of subjects in group 1 complained of nasal obstruction as the only barrier to using a PAP device and about 89% reported experiencing the efficacy of PAP usage. Both the mean and peak average PAP pressures were significantly reduced in group 1 following nasal surgery. Group 2 had multiple subjective problems that interfered with wearing a PAP device and reported a lack of experiencing the efficacy of PAP usage. Preoperative nasal cavity volume values were smaller and absolute blood eosinophil counts were significantly lower in group 1. The current data demonstrate that nasal surgery might increase the compliance of PAP device wear in OSA subjects who complained of only nasal obstruction as a barrier to wearing PAP and who had small nasal cavity volumes combined with allergic inflammation.

Abstract The DAMA/LIBRA collaboration has reported the observation of an annual modulation in the event rate that has been attributed to dark matter interactions over the last two decades. However, even though tremendous efforts to detect similar dark matter interactions were pursued, no definitive evidence has been observed to corroborate the DAMA/LIBRA signal. Many studies assuming various dark matter models have attempted to reconcile DAMA/LIBRA’s modulation signals and null results from other experiments, however no clear conclusion can be drawn. Apart from the dark matter hypothesis, several studies have examined the possibility that the modulation is induced by variations in detector’s environment or their specific analysis methods. In particular, a recent study presents a possible cause of the annual modulation from an analysis method adopted by the DAMA/LIBRA experiment in which the observed annual modulation could be reproduced by a slowly varying time-dependent background. Here, we study the COSINE-100 data using an analysis method similar to the one adopted by the DAMA/LIBRA experiment and observe a significant annual modulation, however the modulation phase is almost opposite to that of the DAMA/LIBRA data. Assuming the same background composition for COSINE-100 and DAMA/LIBRA, simulated experiments for the DAMA/LIBRA without dark matter signals also provide significant annual modulation with an amplitude similar to DAMA/LIBRA with opposite phase. Even though this observation does not directly explain the DAMA/LIBRA results directly, this interesting phenomenon motivates more profound studies of the time-dependent DAMA/LIBRA background data.

Aim: Both skin-sparing mastectomy (SSM) and nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM) have been widely adopted. Although postmastectomy radiation therapy (PMRT) can improve clinical outcomes, it can worsen cosmesis following reconstruction. Therefore, identifying risk factors of ipsilateral breast tumor recurrence (IBTR) could help de-escalate PMRT after NSM/SSM in patients with pT1-2 disease. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed patients treated with SSM (N = 400) and NSM (N = 156) in patients with pT1-2N0-1 disease between 2009 and 2016. Seventy-four patients received PMRT with 50–50.4 Gy in 25–28 fractions. The Cox proportional hazards model was used to analyze the prognostic factors of IBTR. Results: With a median follow-up of 66.2 months, 17 IBTR events were observed, with 5-year IBTR-free rate of 97.2%. Although only one IBTR was observed after PMRT, there was no statistical difference in the 5-year IBTR-free rate (PMRT vs. no PMRT, 98.6% vs. 97.0%, p = 0.360). Multivariable analyses demonstrated that age ≤45 years and lymphovascular invasion (LVI) were adverse features of IBTR. The low-risk group (0 risk factor) showed a better 5-year IBTR-free rate than the high-risk group (≥1 risk factor) (100.0% vs. 95.8%, p = 0.003). In the high-risk group, PMRT slightly improved 5-year IBTR-free rate compared with no PMRT (98.6% vs. 95.2%, p = 0.166). In addition, PMRT increased 5-year cumulative incidence of reconstruction failure (10.0% vs. 2.8%, p = 0.001). Conclusion: We identified risk factors (age and LVI) related to IBTR following upfront SSM/NSM with pT1-2 disease. As a hypothesis-generating study, de-escalation of PMRT by omitting chest wall irradiation in selective patients could improve reconstruction-related complications without compromising oncologic outcomes.

Purpose This study was aimed to investigate the changes in pediatric injury-related visits at an emergency department (ED) during coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Methods We retrospectively compared injury-related visits to an ED in Korea by children aged 15 years or younger during February 2020-December 2021 (pandemic period), and the visits during February 2018-December 2019. Clinical characteristics, injury mechanisms, diagnostic codes, and ED outcomes were noted. We performed 2 sub-analyses of the pandemic period: biannual changes in the visits, and monthly trends of proportions of concussion and superficial injury as diagnostic codes using linear regression. Results Despite a 51.2% reduction in injury-related visits during the pandemic, the proportion of the visits increased (25.2% vs. 40.0%; P < 0.001). Overall, increases were noted in proportions of use of emergency medical services and high acuity (P < 0.001). Among the diagnostic codes, brain injuries, fracture and dislocation, and laceration increased while superficial injuries, burn, intoxication, and foreign body ingestion decreased (P < 0.001). As the pandemic prolonged, injury-to-ED time shortened and ED length of stay lengthened while the abovementioned trends remained unchanged. Linear regression showed that the proportions of concussion and superficial injury respectively increased and decreased by 0.01% per month (P < 0.001). Conclusion The changes in pediatric injury-related visits at the ED during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic may serve as a basis for distributing emergency medicine resources in future infectious disease outbreaks.
