Low-frequency seismic noise poses a significant challenge in gravitational-wave detectors, prompting the use of active seismic isolation systems. These systems employ advanced control configurations, including feedback control, sensor correction, and sensor fusion, to mitigate seismic disturbances. Optimal performance of these systems is achieved through the application of the H-infinity method, which optimizes control filters. The H-infinity method was employed to optimize a sensor correction filter and complementary filters for sensor fusion for a KAGRA Type-B suspension, resulting in the development of an instrumentation-optimal ``super sensor''. The super sensor exhibits comparable overall displacement noise RMS performance to a relative sensor, yet offers significantly better band-limited RMS performance around the secondary microseism frequency, making it highly robust to seismic noise. This highlights the efficacy of the H-infinity method in generating seismic isolation filters tailored to instrument limitations, thereby transforming the system into a fully functional active seismic isolation system.

With the use of twin, co-located, 3D interferometers, Cardiff University's Gravity Exploration Institute aims to observe quantum fluctuations of space-time as predicted by some theories of quantum gravity. Our design displacement sensitivity exceeds that of previous similar experiments, which have constrained the magnitudes of the fluctuations in the 1-25 MHz band. The increased sensitivity comes in large part from the comparably higher circulating power we aim to achieve, which reduces the overall shot noise. One complication of higher circulating power is an increase in contrast defect light, which includes higher-order modes. We will use the DC-readout scheme, whose dark-fringe offset must sufficiently dominate the contrast defect in order to detect faint signals. However, too much total output power risks saturating the high-bandwidth photodetectors. Suppressing the higher-order mode content of the contrast defect is a key strategy to realising the high circulating power and eliminating non-signal-carrying power that contributes to shot noise. Terrestrial laser interferometers for gravitational-wave detection made the landmark first detection of gravitational waves in 2015. We provide an overview of the history of how these laser interferometers prevailed as the most promising technology in the search for gravitational waves. We describe their working principles and their limitations, and provide examples of some of the most important technologies that enabled their construction. We introduce each of the four large-scale laser interferometer gravitational-wave detectors in operation around the world today and provide a brief outlook for the future of ground-based detectors., Comment: Invited chapter for "Handbook of Gravitational Wave Astronomy" (Eds. Small, highly absorbing points are randomly present on the surfaces of the main interferometer optics in Advanced LIGO. The resulting nano-meter scale thermo-elastic deformations and substrate lenses from these micron-scale absorbers significantly reduces the sensitivity of the interferometer directly though a reduction in the power-recycling gain and indirect interactions with the feedback control system. We review the expected surface deformation from point absorbers and provide a pedagogical description of the impact on power build-up in second generation gravitational wave detectors (dual-recycled Fabry-Perot Michelson interferometers). This analysis predicts that the power-dependent reduction in interferometer performance will significantly degrade maximum stored power by up to 50% and hence, limit GW sensitivity, but suggests system wide corrections that can be implemented in current and future GW detectors. This is particularly pressing given that future GW detectors call for an order of magnitude more stored power than currently used in Advanced LIGO in Observing Run 3. Theories of quantum gravity based on the holographic principle predict the existence of quantum fluctuations of distance measurements that accumulate and exhibit correlations over macroscopic distances. This paper models an expected signal due to this phenomenology, and details the design and estimated sensitivity of co-located twin table-top 3D interferometers being built to measure or constrain it. The experiment is estimated to be sensitive to displacements $\sim10^{-19}\,\rm{m}/\sqrt{\rm{Hz}}$ in a frequency band between 1 and 250 MHz, surpassing previous experiments and enabling the possible observation of quantum gravity phenomena. We propose an upgrade to Advanced LIGO (aLIGO), named LIGO-LF, that focuses on improving the sensitivity in the 5-30 Hz low-frequency band, and we explore the upgrade's astrophysical applications. We present a comprehensive study of the detector's technical noises and show that with technologies currently under development, such as interferometrically sensed seismometers and balanced-homodyne readout, LIGO-LF can reach the fundamental limits set by quantum and thermal noises down to 5 Hz. These technologies are also directly applicable to the future generation of detectors. We go on to consider this upgrade's implications for the astrophysical output of an aLIGO-like detector. A single LIGO-LF can detect mergers of stellar-mass black holes (BHs) out to a redshift of z~6 and would be sensitive to intermediate-mass black holes up to 2000 M_\odot. The detection rate of merging BHs will increase by a factor of 18 compared to aLIGO. Additionally, for a given source the chirp mass and total mass can be constrained 2 times better than aLIGO and the effective spin 3-5 times better than aLIGO. Furthermore, LIGO-LF enables the localization of coalescing binary neutron stars with an uncertainty solid angle 10 times smaller than that of aLIGO at 30 Hz, and 4 times smaller when the entire signal is used. The German-British laser-interferometric gravitational wave detector GEO 600 is in its 13th year of operation since its first lock in 2001. After participating in science runs with other first generation detectors, GEO\,600 has continued collecting data as an astrowatch instrument with a duty cycle of 62% during the time when the other detectors have gone offline to undergo substantial upgrades. Less invasive upgrades to demonstrate advanced technologies and improve the GEO 600 sensitivity at high frequencies as part of the GEO-HF program have additionally been carried out in parallel to data taking. We report briefly on the status of GEO 600.

Ground-based laser interferometers for gravitational-wave (GW) detection were first constructed starting 20 years ago and as of 2010 collection of several years' worth of science data at initial design sensitivities was completed. Upgrades to the initial detectors together with construction of brand new detectors are ongoing and feature advanced technologies to improve the sensitivity to GWs. This conference proceeding provides an overview of the common design features of ground-based laser interferometric GW detectors and establishes the context for the status updates of each of the four gravitational-wave detectors around the world: Advanced LIGO, Advanced Virgo, GEO600 and KAGRA.

Quantum noise will be the dominant noise source for the advanced laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors currently under construction. Squeezing-enhanced laser interferometers have been recently demonstrated as a viable technique to reduce quantum noise. We propose two new methods of generating an error signal for matching the longitudinal phase of squeezed vacuum states of light to the phase of the laser interferometer output field. Both provide a superior signal to the one used in previous demonstrations of squeezing applied to a gravitational-wave detector. We demonstrate that the new signals are less sensitive to misalignments and higher order modes, and result in an improved stability of the squeezing level. The new signals also offer the potential of reducing the overall rms phase noise and optical losses, each of which would contribute to achieving a higher level of squeezing. The new error signals are a pivotal development towards realizing the goal of 6 dB and more of squeezing in advanced detectors and beyond.

The output port of GEO 600 is dominated by unwanted high order modes (HOMs). The current thermal actuation system, a ring heater behind one of the folding mirrors, causes a significant amount of astigmatism, which produces HOMs. We have built and installed an astigmatism correction system, based on heating this folding mirror at the sides (laterally). With these side heaters and the ring heater behind the mirror, it is possible to tune its radius of curvature in the horizontal and the vertical degree of freedom. We use this system to match the mirrors in the two arms of GEO 600 to each other, thereby reducing the contrast defect. The use of the side heaters reduces the power of the HOMs at the output of GEO 600 by approximately 37%.

We describe the angular sensing and control of the 4 km detectors of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO). The culmination of first generation LIGO detectors, Enhanced LIGO operated between 2009 and 2010 with about 40 kW of laser power in the arm cavities. In this regime, radiation pressure effects are significant and induce instabilities in the angular opto-mechanical transfer functions. Here we present and motivate the angular sensing and control (ASC) design in this extreme case and present the results of its implementation in Enhanced LIGO. Highlights of the ASC performance are: successful control of opto-mechanical torsional modes, relative mirror motions of 1x10^{-7} rad rms, and limited impact on in-band strain sensitivity.

The two 4 km long gravitational wave detectors operated by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) were modified in 2008 to read out the gravitational wave channel using the DC readout form of homodyne detection and to include an optical filter cavity at the output of the detector. As part of the upgrade to Enhanced LIGO, these modifications replaced the radio-frequency (RF) heterodyne system used previously. We describe the motivations for and the implementation of DC readout and the output mode cleaner in Enhanced LIGO. We present characterizations of the system, including measurements and models of the couplings of the noises from the laser source to the gravitational wave readout channel. We show that noise couplings using DC readout are improved over those for RF readout, and we find that the achieved shot-noise-limited sensitivity is consistent with modeled results.

Motivated by suggestions that binaries with almost equal-mass components ("twins") play an important role in the formation of double neutron stars and may be rather abundant among binaries, we study the stability of synchronized close and contact binaries with identical components in circular orbits. In particular, we investigate the dependency of the innermost stable circular orbit on the core mass, and we study the coalescence of the binary that occurs at smaller separations. For twin binaries composed of convective main-sequence stars, subgiants, or giants with low mass cores (M_c <~0.15M, where M is the mass of a component), a secular instability is reached during the contact phase, accompanied by a dynamical mass transfer instability at the same or at a slightly smaller orbital separation. Binaries that come inside this instability limit transfer mass gradually from one component to the other and then coalesce quickly as mass is lost through the outer Lagrangian points. For twin giant binaries with moderate to massive cores (M_c >~0.15M), we find that stable contact configurations exist at all separations down to the Roche limit, when mass shedding through the outer Lagrangian points triggers a coalescence of the envelopes and leaves the cores orbiting in a central tight binary.
