Problems involved in providing homes for independent living for the physically handicapped, health impaired, or older adults are considered. Basic concepts of low rent housing preface a discussion of neighborhoods and site selection, access, ramps, pedestrian walks, parking, landscaping, and lighting. Guides for building design focus on entrances, corridors, stairs, elevators, incinerator chutes, laundry facilities, general storage, and mailboxes. Specifications are suggested for living units including the living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and storage area; the design of windows, doors, hallways, floors, lighting and heating units, and custodial quarters, and the provision of telephones, televisions, an emergency signal system, and hot water are also treated. Recommendations are made for the following community areas: lounge, recreation room, kitchen, craft area, library, health clinic, washrooms, public telephones, drinking fountains, vending machines, and other areas. Several areas are discussed including--(1) architectural criteria, (2) installation and operation of public entrance doors, (3) weather protection, (4) materials and maintenance factors, (5) coordinating hardware for entrance doors, and (6) open forum discussion. Six factors are cited as being critical in the design of public doorways--(1) the need for a complete study of the entrance doorway in order to minimize physical problems, (2) consideration of the building's function and the usage of the specific doorway in the design and selection of materials, (3) the need to provide security against unauthorized entry, (4) durability of the entire assembly, (5) operation of the doorway should be obvious, simple and free from potential accidential hazards, and (6) the budget assigned must be adequate to provide satisfactory design and installation of quality entrances in public facilities. Elements of modified school design for the physically disabled are considered, including mobility, classrooms, science laboratories, applied skill areas, the library, the swimming pool, and sanitary facilities. Also discussed are the cafeteria (food service, seating, and other considerations), recreational areas (play grounds, gymnasium-auditorium, and auditorium), closets and storage areas (clothing storage, lockers, and supplies and equipment storage), and parking areas (parking lots and loading areas). Security in buildings ranges from simple locks to elaborate electronic systems. Most buildings do not need the level of sophistication it is possible to achieve. A survey of these products, however, is appropriate to appreciate their potential and variety. (Author/MLF)

Also indicated are the types of inquiries that should be made when the use of such structures is being considered. The introduction reflects the philosophical approach to the design and construction of public buildings and housing.
