Numerous outbreaks of duodenoscope-associated infections involving multidrug-resistant bacteria have recently been reported. Plasma activated water (PAW) has been widely considered an effective agent for surface decontamination and is increasingly used for disinfection of medical equipment. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the duodenoscopes currently on market are suited for the repeated use of PAW and to test the efficacy of PAW for their disinfection. Materials and methods: In order to evaluate the disinfection efficacy and the required time of contact, the duodenoscope samples were contaminated by immersing them in fasted-state simulated intestinal fluid containing Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, prior to PAW exposure. In order to test the duodenoscope polymer compatibility with PAW, a challenge test was conducted by immersing the samples in PAW for 30 minutes daily for 45 consecutive days. Results: Significant reductions in bacterial populations were achieved after 30 minutes of PAW treatment, indicating a high-level disinfection. Atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to demonstrate that repeated PAW treatment of duodenoscope coating polymer samples did not result in significant differences in morphological surface between the treated and untreated samples. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis also showed no significant differences between the elemental composition of the duodenoscope coating polymer samples before and after repeated PAW treatment. Conclusion: Considering these preliminary results, PAW could be considered as a new alternative for duodenoscope reprocessing. Keywords: PAW, antibacterial activity, duodenoscope, disinfection

Abstract: The synthesis and characterization of seven nanostructured NiFe2O4 ferrite samples with spinel type structure were studied. The samples were synthesized by the sol–gel autocombustion method, using cellulose, a cellulose–citric acid mixture, hexamethylenetetramine, citric acid, tartaric acid, glycine and urea as chelating/fuel agents. For the first time in the nickel ferrite synthesis developed by this method, hexamethylenetetramine and tartaric acid were used as chelating/fuel agents. The as-obtained samples were characterized by IR spectroscopy, XRD SEM and BET techniques. The catalytic properties of nanostructured NiFe2O4 samples were tested for hydrogen peroxide decomposition. The influence of chelating/fuel agents was highlighted in terms of combustion process development with consequences on particle size, interionic distance values, surface area, microstructure and catalytic activity. The best catalytic properties were recorded for NiFe2O4 obtained with urea as a chelating/fuel agent. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Hollow microcapsules composed from a natural polyelectrolyte and a protein were obtained using the layer-by-layer adsorption on silica oxide particles as template. For the first time, monobasic curdlan phosphate (PCurd) is used as anionic partner in self-assembled multilayers fabrication. The deposition of (curdlan phosphate /hydrolyzed collagen) multilayers was monitorized by ζ - potential measurements. The microparticles morphology assembled with four double-layers were investigated by optical and electron microscopy techniques, and atomic force microscopy. The hollow microcapsules obtained by the removal of the colloidal template with hydrofluoric acid solution were characterized by SEM-EADX and termooxidative analyses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Polymer nanocomposite films based on poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) incorporated with different amounts of copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles were prepared by the solution casting technique. The PVP/CuO nanocomposites were analyzed by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy and dielectric spectroscopy. The XRD analysis showed that the monoclinic structure of cupric oxide was maintained in the PVP host matrix. The key optical parameters, such as optical energy gap E g , Urbach energy E U , absorption coefficient and refractive index, were estimated based on the UV-Vis data. The optical characteristics of the nanocomposite films revealed that their transmittance and absorption were influenced by the addition of CuO nanoparticles in the PVP matrix. Incorporation of CuO nanoparticles into the PVP matrix led to a significant decrease in band gap energy and an increase in the refractive index. The dielectric and electrical behaviors of the PVP/CuO nanocomposites were analyzed over a frequency range between 10 Hz and 1 MHz. The effect of CuO loading on the dielectric parameters (dielectric constant and dielectric loss) of the metal oxide nanocomposites was also discussed.

The multiple uses of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) originate from their availability from renewable resources, and are due to their physico-chemical properties, biodegradability and biocompatibility. At the same time, reducing sensitivity to humidity, increasing interfacial adhesion and hydrophobic modification of the CNF surface to diversify applications and improve operation, are current targets pursued. This study focuses on the preparation of a novel gel structure using cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) and poly(ethylene brassylate-co-squaric acid) (PEBSA 50/50 ), a bio-based copolymacrolactone. The primary goal is to achieve the gel with reduced sensitivity to humidity and enhanced hydrophobic behaviour. The new system was characterized in comparison to its constituent components using various techniques, such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, and NIR - chemical imaging. Rheological tests demonstrated the formation of the CNF_PEBSA 50/50 gel as a result of physical interactions between the two polymeric partners and revealed self-healing abilities for the prepared gels. Determination of the contact angle, surface free energy, as well as dynamic measurements of the vapour sorption of the CNF_PEBSA 50/50 system, confirmed the achievement of the study's aim. Polymers play a crucial role in multiple industries; however, surface modification is necessary for certain applications. Exposure to non-thermal plasma provides a viable and environmentally beneficial option. Fused deposition molding utilizes biodegradable polylactic acid, although it encounters constraints in biomedical applications as a result of inadequate mechanical characteristics. This study investigates the effects of atmospheric pressure plasma generated by a dielectric barrier discharge system using helium and/or argon on the modification of polylactic acid surfaces, changes in their wettability properties, and alterations in their chemical composition. The plasma source was ignited in either He or Ar and was tailored to fit the best operational conditions for polymer exposure. The results demonstrated the enhanced wettability of the polymer surface following plasma treatment (up to 40% in He and 20% in Ar), with a marginal variation observed among treatments utilizing different gases. The plasma treatments also caused changes in the surface topography, morphology, roughness, and hydrophilicity. Plasma exposure also resulted in observable modifications in the dielectric characteristics, phase transition, and structure. The experimental findings endorse the utilization of plasma technologies at normal air pressure for environmentally friendly processing of polymer materials, specifically for applications that necessitate enhanced adhesion and have carefully selected prerequisites.

The present study explores an environmentally friendly green approach to obtain cerium oxide nanoparticles via a biomediated route using Mellisa officinalis and Hypericum perforatum plant extracts as reducing agents. The as-prepared nanoparticles were studied for their structural and morphological characteristics using XRD diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, Raman, fluorescence and electronic absorption spectra, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The XRD pattern has shown the centered fluorite crystal structure of cerium oxide nanoparticles with average crystallite size below 10 nm. These observations were in agreement with the STEM data. The cubic fluorite structure of the cerium oxide nanoparticles was confirmed by the vibrational mode around 462 cm -1 due to the Ce-08 unit. The optical band gap was estimated from UV-Vis reflectance spectra, which was found to decrease from 3.24 eV to 2.98 eV. A higher specific area was determined for the sample using M. officinalis aqueous extract. The EDX data indicated that only cerium and oxygen are present in the green synthesized nanoparticles.

Up to now, the use of TiO 2 has been considered a promising advanced technology for organic pollutants removal from air or water, since it has high biological and chemical stability, high photoactivity, low toxicity, and low-cost production. However, there are issues to be addressed in enhancing TiO 2 performance, and one of the current key issues is redesigning UV-active photocatalysts and making them active in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum. This way, solar light absorption will be insured, and thus, a more efficient photocatalyst could be obtained. For this reason, conjugated polymers and their derivatives are considered to act as photosensitizers, being able to shift the TiO 2 activity from the UV to the visible region. Therefore, this study focuses on the synthesis of TiO 2 /conjugated polymer systems, which was accomplished by the deposition of poly-3,4-ethylene-dioxy-thiophene (PEDOT [-C 6 H 4 O 2 S-] n ), a low-band semiconductor with an excellent stability due to its extending π-conjugated electron system, on titania nanoarchitecture. First of all, a TiO 2 nanoarchitecture was synthesized by an ultrasound-assisted sol-gel method. Then, TiO 2 /PEDOT systems were obtained and characterized by using different techniques such as X-ray diffraction, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance, and N 2 sorption measurements. The synthesized composites confirmed their mesoporosity and lower band gap values compared to bare titania, which clearly shows the ability to work as photocatalysts under visible-light activity. Further, we demonstrated that an organic pollutant, Congo Red dye, used as a model molecule could be photodegraded with the synthesized TiO 2 /PEDOT systems, with efficiencies of up to 95% in the case of T conv PEDOT under UV light and up to 99% for T conv PEDOT under visible-light irradiation, accomplishing in this way a successful synthesis of visible-light-activated titania photocatalyst.

Cerium oxide nanoparticles were obtained using aqueous extracts of Chelidonium majus and Viscum album . X-ray diffractometry analysis confirmed the crystalline structure of the synthesized cerium oxide nanoparticles calcined at 600 °C. Scanning electron microscopy, UV-Vis reflectance and Raman spectroscopy, XPS, and fluorescence studies were utilized to interpret the morphological and optical properties of these nanoparticles. The STEM images revealed the spherical shape of the nanoparticles and that they were predominantly uniform in size. The optical band gap of our cerium nanoparticles was determined to be 3.3 and 3.0 eV from reflectance measurements using the Tauc plots. The nanoparticle sizes evaluated from the Raman band at 464 cm -1 due to the F2g mode of the cubic fluorite structure of cerium oxide are close to those determined from the XRD and STEM data. The fluorescence results showed emission bands at 425, 446, 467, and 480 nm. The electronic absorption spectra have exhibited an absorption band around 325 nm. The antioxidant potential of the cerium oxide nanoparticles was estimated by DPPH scavenging assay.

Designing of economically feasible and recyclable polysaccharide-based materials with thiourea functional groups for removal of specific metal ions such as Ag(I), Au(I), Pb(II) or Hg(II) remains a major challenge for environmental applications. Here, we introduce ultra-lightweight thiourea-chitosan (CSTU) aerogels engineered by combining successive freeze-thawing cycles with covalent formaldehyde-mediated cross-linking and lyophilization. All aerogels exhibited outstanding low densities (0.0021-0.0103 g/cm 3 ) and remarkable high specific surface areas (416.64-447.26 m 2 /g), outperforming the common polysaccharide-based aerogels. Benefitting from their superior structural features (honeycomb interconnected pores and high porosity), CSTU aerogels demonstrate fast sorption rates and excellent performance in sorption of heavy metal ions from highly-concentrated single or binary-component mixtures (1.11 mmol Ag (I)/g and 0.48 mmol Pb(II)/g). A remarkable recycling stability was observed after five sorption-desorption-regeneration cycles when the removal efficiency was up to 80 %. These results support the high potential of CSTU aerogels in the treatment of metal-containing wastewater. Moreover, the Ag(I)-loaded CSTU aerogels exhibited excellent antimicrobial properties against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacterial strains, the killing rate being around 100 %. The high incidence of osteochondral defects has increased the interest in the development of improved repairing alternatives, with tissue engineering being considered a promising approach. The hierarchical, complex structure of osteochondral tissue requires the design of a biomimetic multilayered scaffold. Here, a multilayered and multiphasic 3D macroporous structure was achieved at subzero temperature by the Michael addition reaction of amino functionalities of collagen with acryloyl groups of a bifunctionalized poly(ε-caprolactone). This green approach has been successfully applied to crosslink layers of different composition, both for their efficient sequential formation and connection. Polyethylenimine functionalized nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAp LPEI ) was added to the bottom layer. The resulting hybrid cryogels were characterized by morphology, equilibrium swelling ratios, compressive strength analysis, and MTS assay. They presented good stability, integrity, and biocompatibility. The results revealed that the properties of the prepared constructs may be tuned by varying the composition, number, and thickness of the layers. The Young modulus values were between 3.5 ± 0.02 and 10.5 ± 0.6 kPa for the component layers, while for the multilayered structures they were more than 7.3 ± 0.2 kPa. The equilibrium swelling ratio varied between 4.6 and 14.2, with a value of ~10.5 for the trilayered structure, correlated with the mean pore sizes (74-230 µm).

The bioactivity of the versatile biodegradable biopolymer poly(lactic acid) (PLA) can be obtained by combining it with natural or synthetic compounds. This paper deals with the preparation of bioactive formulations involving the melt processing of PLA loaded with a medicinal plant (sage) and an edible oil (coconut oil), together with an organomodifed montmorillonite nanoclay, and an assessment of the resulting structural, surface, morphological, mechanical, and biological properties of the biocomposites. By modulating the components, the prepared biocomposites show flexibility, both antioxidant and antimicrobial activity, as well as a high degree of cytocompatibility, being capable to induce the cell adherence and proliferation on their surface. Overall, the obtained results suggest that the developed PLA-based biocomposites could potentially be used as bioactive materials in medical applications.

This paper reports new physical hydrogels obtained by the freezing/thawing method. They include pullulan (PULL) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as polymers, bovine serum albumin (BSA) as protein, and a tripeptide, reduced glutathione (GSH). In addition, a sample containing PULL/PVA and lysozyme was obtained in similar conditions. SEM analysis evidenced the formation of networks with porous structure. The average pore size was found to be between 15.7 μm and 24.5 μm. All samples exhibited viscoelastic behavior typical to networks, the hydrogel strength being influenced by the protein content. Infrared spectroscopy analysis revealed the presence of intermolecular hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions (more pronounced for BSA content between 30% and 70%). The swelling kinetics investigated in buffer solution (pH = 7.4) at 37 °C evidenced a quasi-Fickian diffusion for all samples. The hydrogels were loaded with neomycin trisulfate salt hydrate (taken as a model drug), and the optimum formulations (samples containing 10-30% BSA or 2% lysozyme) proved a sustained drug release over 480 min in simulated physiological conditions. The experimental data were analyzed using different kinetic models in order to investigate the drug release mechanism. Among them, the semi-empirical Korsmeyer-Peppas and Peppas-Sahlin models were suitable to describe in vitro drug release mechanism of neomycin sulfate from the investigated hybrid hydrogels. The structural, viscoelastic, and swelling properties of PULL/PVA/protein hybrid hydrogels are influenced by their composition and preparation conditions, and they represent important factors for in vitro drug release behavior.

Local delivery of drugs or antimicrobial agents is a suitable approach in the management of periodontitis when the infection is localized deep in the pockets and does not adequately respond to mechanical debridement and/or systemic antibiotic treatment. In this context, the objective of this study was to prepare new biocomposite films with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and good mechanical properties to be applied in periodontal pockets. The composite film is eco-friendly synthesized from poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) cross-linked with oxidized chitosan (OxCS). Silver nanoparticles (AgNps) were inserted during film synthesis by adding freshly chitosan-capped AgNps colloidal solution to the polymer mixture; the addition of AgNps up to 1.44 wt.% improves the physico-chemical properties of the film. The characterization of the films was performed by FT-IR, atomic mass spectrometry, X-ray spectroscopy, and SEM. The films displayed a high swelling ratio (162%), suitable strength (1.46 MPa), and excellent mucoadhesive properties (0.6 N). Then, ibuprofen (IBF) was incorporated within the best film formulation, and the IBF-loaded PVA/OxCS-Ag films could deliver the drug in a sustained manner up to 72 h. The biocomposite films have good antimicrobial properties against representative pathogens for oral cavities. Moreover, the films are biocompatible, as demonstrated by in vitro tests on HDFa cell lines.

The study presents the achievement of a new assembly with antioxidant behaviour based on a copolymacrolactone structure that encapsulates erythritol (Eryt). Poly(ethylene brassylate-co-squaric acid) (PEBSA) was synthesised in environmentally friendly conditions, respectively, through a process in suspension in water by opening the cycle of ethylene brassylate macrolactone, followed by condensation with squaric acid. The compound synthesised in suspension was characterised by comparison with the polymer obtained by polymerisation in solution. The investigations revealed that, with the exception of the molecular masses, the compounds generated by the two synthetic procedures present similar properties, including good thermal stability, with a T peak of 456 °C, and the capacity for network formation. In addition, the investigation by dynamic light scattering techniques evidenced a mean diameter for PEBSA particles of around 596 nm and a zeta potential of -25 mV, which attests to their stability. The bio-based copolymacrolactone was used as a matrix for erythritol encapsulation. The new PEBSA-Eryt compound presented an increased sorption/desorption process, compared with the PEBSA matrix, and a crystalline morphology confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. The bioactive compound was also characterised in terms of its biocompatibility and antioxidant behaviour.

Lead-free piezoelectric ceramics with nominal composition at morphotropic phase boundary Ba 0.85 Ca 0.15 Ti 0.9 Zr 0.1 O 3 (BCTZ) prepared by different processing routes and sintered either by conventional solid-state reaction or by spark plasma sintering (SPS) techniques were comparatively investigated to observe the role of structural modifications and of microstructures on the dielectric, ferroelectric, piezoelectric and electrocaloric responses. The ceramics presented relative densities from 75% to 97% and showed variations in their phase composition as a result of variable mixing and different synthesis and sintering parameters providing local compositional heterogeneity. As result, all of the ceramics showed diffuse phase transition and ferroelectric switching responses, with parameters affected mostly by density ( P r between 3.6 to 10.1 μC/cm 2 ). High values for the electrocaloric response in the Curie range were found for the ceramics with predominantly orthorhombic character. Field-induced structural modifications were probed by tunability anomalies and by XRD experiments in remanence conditions. Piezoelectric effects with notably high figure of merit values were assigned to the better densification and poling efficiency of BCTZ ceramics.

Dielectric, magnetic and Raman measurements of cerium oxide nanoparticles obtained by the precipitation method are discussed. Morphological study was performed by scanning electron microscopy, confirming the formation of nanoparticles of 5-27 nm. The Raman spectra exhibited a strong band around 465 cm -1 , corresponding to the symmetrical stretching mode of the Ce-O8 vibrational unit. The nature of the room temperature ferromagnetism of cerium oxide nanoparticles was analyzed, taking into account the oxygen defects at the surface or interface of the nanoparticles. The evolution of dielectric constant, ε', and dielectric loss, ε″ was studied as a function of frequency at different temperatures. Additionally, the variation of the electric conductivity versus temperature was investigated. Finally, complex impedance study of the cerium oxide nanoparticles was performed.

Highly transparent thin films with the chemical formula BaSrMgWO 6 were deposited by spin coating using a solution of nitrates of Ba, Sr, and Mg and ammonium paratungstate in dimethylformamide with a Ba:Sr:Mg:W ratio = 1:1:1:1. XRD, SEM, EDX, and XPS investigations evidenced that annealing at 800 °C for 1 h results in an amorphous structure having a precipitate on its surface, and that supplementary annealing at 850 °C for 45 min forms a nanocrystalline structure and dissolves a portion of the precipitates. A textured double perovskite cubic structure (61.9%) was found, decorated with tetragonal and cubic impurity phases (12.7%), such as BaO 2 , SrO 2 , and MgO, and an under-stoichiometric phase (24.4%) with the chemical formula Ba 2-(x+y) Sr x Mg y WO 5 . From transmittance measurements, the values of the optical band gap were estimated for the amorphous ( E gdir = 5.21 eV, E gind = 3.85 eV) and nanocrystalline ( E gdir = 4.69 eV, E gind = 3.77 eV) phases. The presence of a lattice disorder was indicated by the high Urbach energy values and weak absorption tail energies. A decrease in their values was observed and attributed to the crystallization process, lattice strain diminution, and cation redistribution.

The development of intelligent materials for protective equipment applications is still growing, with enormous potential to improve the safety of personnel functioning in specialized professions, such as firefighters. The design and production of such materials by the chemical modification of biodegradable semisynthetic polymers, accompanied by modern manufacturing techniques such as electrospinning, which may increase specific properties of the targeted material, continue to attract the interest of researchers. Phosphorus-modified poly(vinyl alcohol)s have been, thus, synthesized and utilized to prepare environmentally friendly electrospun mats. Poly(vinyl alcohol)s of three different molecular weights and degrees of hydrolysis were phosphorylated by polycondensation reaction in solution in the presence of phenyl dichlorophosphate in order to enhance their flame resistance and thermal stability. The thermal behavior and the flame resistance of the resulting phosphorus-modified poly(vinyl alcohol) products were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis and by cone calorimetry at a micro scale. Based on the as-synthesized phosphorus-modified poly(vinyl alcohol)s, electrospun mats were successfully fabricated by the electrospinning process. Rheology studies were performed to establish the optimal conditions of the electrospinning process, and scanning electron microscopy investigations were undertaken to observe the morphology of the phosphorus-modified poly(vinyl alcohol) electrospun mats.

Present research was directed towards the development of new high-performance and cost-effective polysulfone membranes (PSFQ) by introducing ionic liquids (ILs-Cyphos 101 IL and Aliquat 336) into their matrix. Variation of ILs was performed with the aim to find the one that brings new properties and improves the functionality and selectivity of PSFQ membranes in ultrafiltration processes. Based on the obtained results of the rheological study, we established the compatibility of compounds and optimal content of the used ILs, namely 3 wt% and 15 wt% Cyphos 101 IL and compositions varying between 3 and 15 wt % Aliquat 336. Results indicated that the ILs acted as plasticizers when they were added to the system, a helpful aspect in processing membranes used in water decontamination. The efficiency and performance of the membranes were evaluated by their use in the treatment of diclofenac (DCF)-containing waters. Membranes obtained from PSFQ/Aliquat 336 solution containing 15 wt% IL exhibited a 97% removal degree of DCF in the treatment process of 50 mL solution containing 3 mg/L DCF. The separation efficiency was kept constant for four filtration/cleaning cycles. The results indicated an improvement in membrane performance as the amount of IL in their structure increased, which confirms the potential for application in water treatment processes.

Physical cryogels were obtained using the successive freeze-thaw technique of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/poly(ethylene brassylate-co-squaric acid) (PEBSA) solutions. The cryogel systems were prepared by using two different molecular weights of PVA and PEBSA with three different ratios between the ethylene brassylate (EB) and squaric acid (SA) comonomers. The presence of interactions, the thermal properties and the morphology were investigated using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetry (TGA and DTG) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. The influence of the composition on the degree of swelling in a physiological environment was demonstrated. The study highlighted improvements in terms of new network flexibility due to the intermolecular chains interactions brought by the introduction of PEBSA in the cryogel structure. We also concluded that the presence of PEBSA in the PVA/PEBSA cryogel network improved the loading capacity of the new system with specific hydrophobic agents, for example essential oils, which (due to their antimicrobial character) can lead to the use of new systems obtained for various applications.

This study presents new drug delivery systems based on xanthan, unmodified or modified by esterification with oleic acid, and alginate for controlled release of bioactive substances with anti-inflammatory (piroxicam) and antifungal properties (ketoconazole). The mechanical properties of the developed drug carriers showed that their compressive strength was affected by the encapsulation of the bioactive principles. When ketoconazole was added into the xanthan/alginate matrix, an increment in the mechanical strength was recorded (66.68% compression). The release of the active principles from the materials was best described by the Korsmeyer-Peppas model, with non-Fickian or Fickian diffusion (the values of the exponent of release are between 0.29 and 0.75), depending on the composition of the polymeric matrix. The release rate constant presents smaller values for the materials based on chemically modified xanthan (between 0.89 and 20.11) as compared with materials based on the unmodified form (between 4.27 and 25.00). All materials were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The designed systems prove to have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity. Starting from the bactericidal properties of functionalized polysulfone (PSFQ) and due to its excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability, and performance in various field, cellulose acetate phthalate (CAP) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), as well as their blends (PSFQ/CAP and PSFQ/PVA), have been tested to evaluate their applicative potential in the biomedical field. In this context, because the polymer processing starts from the solution phase, in the first step, the rheological properties were followed in order to assess and control the structural parameters. The surface chemistry analysis, surface properties, and antimicrobial activity of the obtained materials were investigated in order to understand the relationship between the polymers' structure-surface properties and organization form of materials (fibers and/or films), as important indicators for their future applications. Using the appropriate organization form of the polymers, the surface morphology and performance, including wettability and water permeation, were improved and controlled-these being the desired and needed properties for applications in the biomedical field. Additionally, after antimicrobial activity testing against different bacteria strains, the control of the inhibition mechanism for the analyzed microorganisms was highlighted, making it possible to choose the most efficient polymers/blends and, consequently, the efficiency as biomaterials in targeted applications.

Silver nanoparticles synthesized using plant extracts as reducing and capping agents showed various biological activities. In the present study, colloidal silver nanoparticle solutions were produced from the aqueous extracts of Picea abies and Pinus nigra bark. The phenolic profile of bark extracts was analyzed by liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. The synthesis of silver nanoparticles was monitored using UV-Vis spectroscopy by measuring the Surface Plasmon Resonance band. Silver nanoparticles were characterized by attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray and transmission electron microscopy analyses. The antimicrobial and cytogenotoxic effects of silver nanoparticles were evaluated by disk diffusion and Allium cepa assays, respectively. Picea abies and Pinus nigra bark extract derived silver nanoparticles were spherical (mean hydrodynamic diameters of 78.48 and 77.66 nm, respectively) and well dispersed, having a narrow particle size distribution (polydispersity index values of 0.334 and 0.224, respectively) and good stability (zeta potential values of -10.8 and -14.6 mV, respectively). Silver nanoparticles showed stronger antibacterial, antifungal, and antimitotic effects than the bark extracts used for their synthesis. Silver nanoparticles obtained in the present study are promising candidates for the development of novel formulations with various therapeutic applications.

Polyether urethane (PU)-based magnetic composite materials, containing different types and concentrations of iron oxide nanostructures (Fe 2 O 3 and Fe 3 O 4 ), were prepared and investigated as a novel composite platform that could be explored in different applications, especially for the improvement of the image quality of MRI investigations. Firstly, the PU structure was synthetized by means of a polyaddition reaction and then hematite (Fe 2 O 3 ) and magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) nanoparticles were added to the PU matrices to prepare magnetic nanocomposites. The type and amount of iron oxide nanoparticles influenced its structural, morphological, mechanical, dielectric, and magnetic properties. Thus, the morphology and wettability of the PU nanocomposites surfaces presented different behaviours depending on the amount of the iron oxide nanoparticles embedded in the matrices. Mechanical, dielectric, and magnetic properties were enhanced in the composites' samples when compared with pristine PU matrix. In addition, the investigation of in vitro cytocompatibility of prepared PU nanocomposites showed that these samples are good candidates for biomedical applications, with cell viability levels in the range of 80-90%. Considering all the investigations, we can conclude that the addition of magnetic particles introduced additional properties to the composite, which could significantly expand the functionality of the materials developed in this work.

Curcumin (CCM) is a natural hydrophobic polyphenol known for its numerous applications in the food industry as a colorant or jelly stabilizer, and in the pharmaceutical industry due to its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-cancer, and anti-Alzheimer properties. However, the large application of CCM is limited by its poor solubility in water and low stability. To enhance the bioavailability of CCM, and to protect it against the external degradation agents, a novel strategy, which consists in the preparation of semi-interpenetrating polymer networks, (s-IPNs) based on poly( N , N -dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) entrapped in poly(acrylamide) networks, by a cryogelation technique, was developed in this work. All s-IPN cryogels were characterized by SEM, EDX, FTIR, and swelling at equilibrium as a function of pH. Functionalization of semi-IPN cryogel with monochlorotriazinyl-β-cyclodextrin (MCT-β-CD) led to IPN cryogel. The release profile of CCM from the composite cryogels was investigated at 37 °C, in pH 3. It was found that the cumulative release increased with the increase of the carrier hydrophobicity, as a result of increasing the cross-linking degree, the content and the molar mass of PDMAEMA. Fitting Higuchi, Korsmeyer-Peppas, and first order kinetic models on the CCM release profiles indicated the diffusion as the main driving force of drug release from the composite cryogels.

Within this study, new materials were synthesized and characterized based on polysiloxane modified with different ratios of N -acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC) and crosslinked via UV-assisted thiol-ene addition, in order to obtain efficient membranes able to resist bacterial adherence and biofilm formation. These membranes were subjected to in vitro testing for microbial adherence against S. pneumoniae using standardized tests. WISTAR rats were implanted for 4 weeks with crosslinked siloxane samples without and with NAC. A set of physical characterization methods was employed to assess the chemical structure and morphological aspects of the new synthetized materials before and after contact with the microbiological medium.

Auriferous sulphide ores often incorporate micro-fine (or invisible) gold and silver particles in a manner making their extraction difficult. Nobel metals are lost in the tailings due to the refractory nature of these ores. Bioleaching is an environment-friendly alternative to the commonly used and toxic cyanidation protocols for gold extraction from refractory ores. In this paper, we investigate gold and silver bioleaching from porphyry and epithermal mineralisation systems, using iron-oxidizing bacteria Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans. The invisible Au, sequestered in refractory ores, was characterised in situ by synchrotron micro X-Ray Fluorescence (SR-μ-XRF) and X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS), offering information on Au unaltered speciation at the atomistic level within the ore matrices and at a micro-scale spatial resolution. The SR-μ-XRF and XAS results showed that 10-20 μm sized elemental Au(0) nuggets are sequestered in pyrite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite matrices and at the interface of a mixture of pyrite and chalcopyrite. Moreover, the preliminary bioleaching experiments of the two types of ores, showed that Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans can catalyse the dissolution of natural heterogeneous Fe-rich geo-matrices, sequestering Au and Ag and releasing particulate phases or partially solubilising them within 60 days. These results provide an understanding of noble metal sequestration and speciation within natural ores and a demonstration of the application of synchrotron-based micro-analysis in characterizing economic trace metals in major mineral structures. Bio-based compounds are a leading direction in the context of the increased demand for these materials due to the numerous advantages associated with their use over conventional materials, which hardly degrade in the environment. At the same time, the use of essential oils and their components is generated mainly by finding alternative solutions to antibiotics and synthetic preservatives due to their bioactive characteristics, but also to their synergistic capacity during the manifestation of different biological properties. The present study is devoted to poly(ethylene brassylate-co-squaric acid) (PEBSA), synthesis and its use for thymol encapsulation and antibacterial system formation. The synthesized copolymer, performed through ethylene brassylate macrolactone ring-opening and copolymerization with squaric acid, was physicochemical characterized. Its amphiphilic character allowed the entrapment of thymol (Ty), a natural monoterpenoid phenol found in oil of thyme, a compound with strong antiseptic properties. The copolymer chemical structure was confirmed by spectroscopic analyses. Thermal analysis evidenced a good thermal stability for the copolymer. Additionally, the antimicrobial activity of PEBSA_Ty complex was investigated against eight different reference strains namely: bacterial strains- Staphylococcus aureus ATCC25923, Escherichia coli ATCC25922, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212, Klebsiella pneumonie ATCC 10031 and Salmonella typhimurium ATCC 14028, yeast strains represented by Candida albicans ATCC10231 and Candida glabrata ATCC 2001, and the fungal strain Aspergillus brasiliensis ATCC9642.

Self-assembly potential of new amphiphilic block copolymers containing dextran (M n 4500, 8000, 15,000) and a semi-rigid deoxycholic acid-oligoethyleneglycol polyester (M n 2500-8800, 2 or 4 ethyleneglycol units), was evaluated as a function of copolymer composition and self-assembly procedure, using dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. Addition of copolymer solution to water provided small star-like micelles (∼ 100 nm), while addition of water to copolymer solution led to various morphologies and sizes (60-600 nm), depending on polymer composition. Worm-like micelles were obtained from a copolymer containing dextran with M n 4500 and 66 wt% polyester, and vesicles were formed by copolymers prepared from dextran with M n 8000 and containing 46 wt% polyester. Presence of a longer oligoethyleneglycol decreased the size of micelles and vesicles due to an enhanced flexibility of the polyester hydrophobic block. Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease associated with immune system dysfunction that can affect nails, with a negative impact on patient life quality. Usually, nail psoriasis is associated with skin psoriasis and is therefore relatively simple to diagnose. However, up to 10% of nail psoriasis occurs isolated and may be difficult to diagnose by means of current methods (nail biopsy, dermoscopy, video dermoscopy, capillaroscopy, ultrasound of the nails, etc.). Since the nail is a complex biological tissue, mainly composes of hard α-keratins, the structural and morphological techniques can be used to analyze the human fingernails. The aim of this study was to corroborate the information obtained using Raman spectroscopy with those obtained by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffractometry and to assess the potential of these techniques as non-invasive dermatologic diagnostic tools and an alternative to current methods.

The aim of the paper was to investigate the ability of an eco-friendly luminescent xerogel prepared by chitosan crosslinking with a phenothiazine luminogen to detect and remove heavy metals. Its ability to give a divergent morphological and optical response towards fifteen environmental relevant metals was investigated by naked eye and UV lamp, fluorescence spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. A distinct response was noted for mercury, consisting in the transformation of the xerogel into a rubber-like material accompanied by the red shifting of the color of emitted light from yellow-green to greenish-yellow domain. The particularities of the metals anchoring into the xerogel were analyzed by FTIR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The morphological changes and the metal uptake were analyzed by SEM-EDAX, swelling and gravimetric methods. It was concluded that mercury has a superior affinity towards this heteroatoms rich system, leading to a secondary crosslinking. Composites based on ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM) , butyl/halobutyl rubber and nanosilica were prepared by melt mixing and subjected to different doses of electron beam irradiation. The effect of irradiation dose on the mechanical properties, morphology, glass transition temperature, thermal stability and water uptake was investigated. The efficiency of the crosslinking by electron beam irradiation was analyzed by Charlesby-Pinner parameter evaluation and crosslink density measurements. The scanning electron microscopy data showed a good dispersion of nanosilica in the rubber matrix. An improvement in hardness and 100% modulus was revealed by increasing irradiation dose up to 150 kGy. The interaction between polymer matrix and nanosilica was analyzed using the Kraus equation. Additionally, these results indicated that the mechanical properties, surface characteristics, and water uptake were dependent on crosslink characteristics.

Objectives: Duodenoscopes have been widely used for both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) procedures, but recently, numerous outbreaks of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO) infections have been reported which has led to extensive research for their possible causes. Consequently, the aim of this study is to search for possible duodenoscope surface damages that could provide an alternative and plausible source of infections., Materials and Methods: In order to assess both outer and inner surfaces, a duodenoscope was dismantled and samples were taken from the outer resin polymer and from the air/water, elevator, and working (biopsy) channels that were characterized by FTIR, DSC, TGA, AFM, SEM techniques and the antimicrobial activity were tested., Results: Alterations were noticed on both the coating and working channel polymers, with external alterations increasing progressively from the proximal sample to the distal sample near the tip of the scope. However, the results showed that the coating surface was still efficient against bacterial adhesion. Changes in surface texture and also morphological changes were shown., Conclusions: The study describes the impact of routine procedural use and reprocessing cycles on the duodenoscope, showing that these may possibly make it susceptible to bacterial contamination and MDRO biofilm formation due to difficult reprocessing of the altered surfaces.

In this study, a facile, eco-friendly route, in two steps, for obtaining of poly-L-lactic acid/chitosan-silver nanoparticles scaffolds under quiescent conditions was presented. The method consists of plasma treatment and then wet chemical treatment of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) films in a chitosan based-silver nanoparticles solution (Cs/AgNp). The changes of the physical and chemical surface proprieties were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), small angle X-Ray scattering (SAXS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and profilometry methods. A certain combination of plasma treatment and chitosan-based silver nanoparticles solution increased the biocompatibility of PLLA films in combination with cell line seeding as well as the antimicrobial activity for gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. The sample that demonstrated from Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDAX) to have the highest amount of nitrogen and the smallest amount of Ag, proved to have the highest value for cell viability, demonstrating better biocompatibility and very good antimicrobial proprieties.

The effects of electron beam irradiation on the properties of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM)/butyl rubber composites in presence of a polyfunctional monomer were investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), attenuated total reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR), and mechanical and surface energy measurements. The samples were exposed over a wide range of irradiation doses (20⁻150 kGy). The EPDM matrix was modified with butyl rubber, chlorobutyl rubber, and bromobutyl rubber. The gel content and crosslink density were found to increase with the electron beam irradiation dose. The values of the hardness and modulus increased gradually with the irradiation dose, while the tensile strength and elongation at break decreased with increasing irradiation dose. The EPDM/butyl rubber composites presented a higher thermal stability compared to the initial EPDM sample. The incorporation of butyl rubbers into the EPDM matrix led to an increase in material hydrophobicity. A similar trend was observed when the irradiation dose increased. The greatest change in the surface free energy and the contact angles occurs at an irradiation dose of 20 kGy. The Charlesby⁻Pinner plots prove the tendency to crosslinking as the irradiation dose increases.

A sea water wave tank fitted in an artificial UV light weathering chamber was built to study the behaviour of polypropylene (PP) injected pieces in close ocean-like conditions. In air, the same pieces sees a degradation in the bulk with a decrease of mechanical properties, a little change of crystal properties and nearly no change of surface chemistry. Weathering in the sea water wave tank shows only a surface changes, with no effect on crystals or mechanical properties with loss of small pieces of matter in the sub-micron range and a change of surface chemistry. This suggests an erosion dispersion mechanism. Such mechanism could explain why no particle smaller than about one millimeter is found when collecting plastic debris at sea: there are much smaller, eroded from plastic surfaces by a mechano-chemical process similar to the erosion mechanism found in the dispersion of agglomerate under flow., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd.
