Climate change is being intensified by anthropogenic emission of greenhouse gasses, highlighting the value of forests for carbon dioxide storing carbon in their biomass. Seasonally dry tropical forests are a neglected, threatened, but potentially critical biome for helping mitigate climate change. In South America, knowing the amount and distribution of carbon in Caatinga seasonally dry vegetation is essential to understand its contribution to the global carbon cycle and subsequently design a strategic plan for its conservation. The present study aimed to model and map the spatial distribution of the potential forest biomass stock across 32 forest fragments of Caatinga, in the state of Bahia, Brazil, using regression kriging and Inverse Square of Distance techniques, building from point measurements of vegetation biomass made on-the-ground in ecological plots. First, a model for estimating biomass was fitted as a function of environmental variables to apply regression kriging, and then applied to the maps of the selected components. Elevation, temperature, and precipitation explained 46% of the biomass variations in the Caatinga. The model residuals showed strong spatial dependence and were mapped based on geostatistical criteria, selecting the spherical semivariogram model for interpolation by ordinary kriging. Biomass was also mapped by the Inverse Square of Distance approach. The quality of the regression model suggests that there is good potential for estimating biomass here from environmental variables. The regression kriging showed greater detail in the spatial distribution and revealed a spatial trend of increasing biomass from the north to south of the domain. Additional studies with greater sampling intensity and the use of other explanatory variables are suggested to improve the model, as well as to maximize the technique’s ability to capture the actual biomass behavior in this newly studied seasonally dry ecosystem.

Genetic, environmental, technological and financial resources are used differently in cattle herds that participate in the same breeding programme. The percentages of calves sired by sires within their own herd or from external herds vary across herds, as do the intensities of use of reproductive biotechnologies. These divergences may be related to differences in the indicators of genetic performance for economic traits. The aim of this study was to determine the factors related to herd structure and genetic resource utilization that exert the greatest influence on the genetic merit of seedstock herds within a Nellore breeding programme. The database comprised 21 factors, along with genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (GE-EPDs) for growth, reproductive and carcass traits, as well as a selection index of animals from 128 herds. By combining principal component analysis and cluster analysis, we were able to group the herds. We identified statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) in the mean values of the factors, GE-EPDs and genetic trends among the groups of herds. Differences in the percentage of sires from external herds and in sire age between the groups of herds were the factors most associated with differences in mean GE-EPDs and genetic trends. Using young sires from other herds or lineages is an effective strategy in animal breeding. By enhancing genetic variability, this approach does not only improve the genetic quality of herds but also accelerates genetic progress in desired traits over time. Objective: The present study investigated the relationship between maternal periodontal disease, insulin resistance, activation of inflammatory pathways and epigenetic modifications in adult offspring., Design: Therefore, female Wistar rats were divided into control and experimental groups. Seven days after the induction of periodontal disease, female rats from both groups were mated with healthy male rats. After weaning, male offspring were divided into control offspring (CN-o) and periodontal disease offspring (PED-o) groups. Body weight was measured at 0-75 days of age. Background: Studies of non-invasive treatments such as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can contribute in an alternative way to the symptoms treatment and changes in sleep patterns in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), due to some scientific evidence of action on cognition and clinical characteristics., Aim: The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate studies of non-invasive brain stimulation using rTMS and tDCS on symptoms and sleep parameters in people with ADHD, in order to synthesize the main findings on intervention effects., Methodology: A systematic review was carried out using the PRISMA protocol in the PubMed/Medline, Embase, PsycInfo, CINAHL, PEDro and Central-Cochrane library databases were initially carried out on 14 March 2024 and repeated until September 2024. Randomized clinical trials evaluating the effect of rTMS and tDCS on symptoms and changes in sleep pattern in people with ADHD were included. Primary outcomes were total severity of ADHD symptoms and sleep quality assessed by questionnaires and instrument measures., Results: The review evidenced only positive findings in five studies for tDCS in some cognitive functions, ADHD symptoms and improvement in sleep parameters, being results with reduced efficacy due to the high heterogeneity in the experimental protocols., Conclusion: The findings show limited evidence; however, it is suggested that the combined use of non-invasive stimulation with other approaches, such as cognitive training, may improve the intervention effect. It is also important to consider limitations such as heterogeneity in clinical protocols, selection of participants with ADHD, including dosage and frequency. In vitro embryo production is one of the main reproductive techniques used in dairy Gyr cattle. In addition, linear type measures are well characterized and have been used in dairy Gyr breed selection for the last 4 decades. The estimation of genetic parameters for the number of aspirated oocytes and in vitro-produced embryos associated with the linear type measures would support genetic progress for animal breeding programs toward embryo production. This study aimed to estimate genetic parameters for aspirated oocytes, embryo in vitro production, and linear type traits, exploring the association between them. The repeatability model was applied to 14,251 ovum pick-up events from 1,916 Gyr donors. A subset of 604 donors from the same group had their body measurements taken. Single- and 2-trait analyses were carried out using the BLUPF90 family programs. Heritability estimates of 0.38, 0.34, and 0.20 were obtained for total oocytes, viable oocytes, and embryos, respectively, and the heritability of the linear type traits ranged from 0.22 to 0.40. High genetic correlations between total oocytes and viable oocytes (0.99), and between oocytes (total and viable) and embryos (0.83) were obtained. Low to high genetic (-0.07 to 0.92) and phenotypic (0.32-0.86) correlations were obtained between the linear type traits. Moreover, low phenotypic correlations (0.01-0.13) were observed for oocytes (total and viable) and embryos with the linear type traits, whereas low to moderate genetic correlations (0.07-0.42) were observed between the same traits, especially for ilium width (0.42), rump area (0.38), and hip height (0.33). Thus, selection for in vitro production is achievable in Gyr dairy cattle, and superior genetic progress is associated with the selection of oocytes (total and viable). Furthermore, the moderate genetic association between oocytes and embryos with linear type traits, especially ilium width suggests that progress on in vitro embryo production may be achieved by accessing these measurements., (The Authors. Floodplains contribute significantly to terrestrial ecosystem service provision but are also among the most vulnerable and degraded ecosystems worldwide. Heterogeneity in floodplain properties arises from variations in river-specific flood regimes, watershed characteristics, and valley morphology, influencing seasonally flooded forests' taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic diversity. This study addresses persisting knowledge gaps in floodplain ecology, focusing on the seasonally dry tropics. We explore the relationships between flood regime, environmental conditions, vegetation composition, functional and phylogenetic diversity, and the impact of environmental variables on above-ground biomass (AGB) and ecological strategies. The study spans six rivers in southeastern Brazil's main river basins: Rio Grande and São Francisco. We identified five eco-units in each floodplain based on flooding regimes and surveyed six plots per eco-unit. We measured trees with DBH > 5 cm and collected functional traits, along with detailed soil, climate, and water level data. We calculated plot-level floristic composition, taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic diversity, wood density, and AGB. Functional and phylogenetic dissimilarity were analyzed, and the effects of climate, soil, and hydrological variables were quantified using generalized linear mixed models. We show how flood frequency and duration affect floristic composition across the floodplains. Taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity responded to climate, soil, and hydrological variables, while functional diversity responded primarily to hydrological variables, emphasizing the role of environmental filtering. Hydrological seasonality, soil fertility, and flood regime emerged as key factors shaping community structure and ecological strategies in the studied seasonally flooded tropical forests. Tree growth and longevity trade-offs fundamentally shape the terrestrial carbon balance. Yet, we lack a unified understanding of how such trade-offs vary across the world's forests. By mapping life history traits for a wide range of species across the Americas, we reveal considerable variation in life expectancies from 10 centimeters in diameter (ranging from 1.3 to 3195 years) and show that the pace of life for trees can be accurately classified into four demographic functional types. We found emergent patterns in the strength of trade-offs between growth and longevity across a temperature gradient. Furthermore, we show that the diversity of life history traits varies predictably across forest biomes, giving rise to a positive relationship between trait diversity and productivity. Our pan-latitudinal assessment provides new insights into the demographic mechanisms that govern the carbon turnover rate across forest biomes.

Peri-implantitis (PI) is a chronic, inflammatory, and infectious disease which affects dental implants and has certain similarities to periodontitis (PD). Evidence has shown that PD may be related to several types of systemic disorders, such as diabetes and insulin resistance, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory tract infections, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and neurological disorders. Furthermore, some types of bacteria in PD can also be found in PI, leading to certain similarities in the immunoinflammatory responses in the host. This review aims to discuss the possible connection between PI and neuroinflammation, using information based on studies about periodontal disorders, a topic whose connection with systemic alterations has been gaining the interest of the scientific community. Literature concerning PI, PD, and systemic disorders, such as neuroinflammation, brain inflammation, and neurological disorder, was searched in the PubMed database using different keyword combinations. All studies found were included in this narrative review. No filters were used. Eligible studies were analyzed and reviewed carefully. This study found similarities between PI and PD development, maintenance, and in the bacterial agents located around the teeth (periodontitis) or dental implants (peri-implantitis). Through the cardiovascular system, these pathologies may also affect blood-brain barrier permeability. Furthermore, scientific evidence has suggested that microorganisms from PI (as in PD) can be recognized by trigeminal fiber endings and start inflammatory responses into the trigeminal ganglion. In addition, bacteria can traverse from the mouth to the brain through the lymphatic system. Consequently, the immune system increases inflammatory mediators in the brain, affecting the homeostasis of the nervous tissue and vice-versa. Based on the interrelation of microbiological, inflammatory, and immunological findings between PD and PI, it is possible to infer that immunoinflammatory changes observed in PD can imply systemic changes in PI. Pelgipeptins, tridecaptins, and elgicins are among the antimicrobials produced by Paenibacillus elgii. Growth in complex media is commonly applied to obtain lipopeptides from culture's supernatant, but it requires further purification. This study aimed to improve the yield of pelgipeptins and tridecaptins using chemically defined media. The kinetics of antimicrobial lipopeptide yield in chemically defined media were evaluated in P. elgii AC13. Pelgipeptins were detected in the supernatant and the culture pellet, but tridecaptins were mainly associated with cell debris or endospores. We investigated whether removing Ca2+ would impair P. elgii sporogenesis, consequently improving the yield of tridecaptin. The kinetics of both lipopeptides in the presence and absence of Ca2+ were quantitatively and qualitatively evaluated and further correlated with the cell cycle. The impairment of P. elgii AC13 sporogenesis had no effect on tridecaptin production, which remained undetected in the supernatant of the culture. On the other hand, the yield of pelgipeptin in a Ca2+-free medium increased. We showed for the first time that the removal of Ca2+ interrupted the sporogenesis in P. elgii and improved the yield of pelgipeptins. However, Ca2+ absence had no effect on tridecaptin yield, which is possibly degraded or associated with other cell debris components., (© The Author(s) 2024. The cocoa tree ( Theobroma cacao L.) has seeds that after processing become a valuable agricultural commodity in the world. In Brazil, the state of Pará located in the Eastern Amazon is the main producer, accounting for more than 53% of the national production. Although the region is the largest producer, no studies are found in the literature containing data on the sensory quality of the beans. Thus, the purpose of this study is to establish the sensory profile of Amazonian cocoa from the main cocoa-producing regions of the Eastern Amazon (Lower Tocantins River, Northeast, West, Southeast and Trans-Amazon). The sensory profile was established from the Quantitative Descriptive Analysis (QDA), in addition to using an affective test to verify consumer preference for the chocolates produced. Physical, physicochemical and bioactive compound evaluations were carried out. Beans from different regions had a similar sensory profile; however, it was possible to observe some differences in certain descriptor terms. In the physical evaluation, the samples presented an acceptable commercial standard, and the humidity was within the values established by the legislation. It was found that the post-harvest and/or processing parameters had no influence on the quality attributes of cocoa beans.

An environmental disaster caused by the rupture of a mining tailings dam has impacted a large area of the Rio Doce watershed in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, resulting in unprecedented damage at spatial and temporal scales. The Atlantic Forest is one of the world's most important biodiversity hotspots. A long history of land use conversion has resulted in a highly fragmented landscape. Despite numerous restoration initiatives, these efforts have often biased criteria and use limited species assemblages. We conducted a comprehensive synthesis of the plant community in riparian forests along the Rio Doce watershed. Our work detailed vegetation composition (tree and sapling strata) and examined its relationship with edaphic and landscape factors, aiming to inform restoration projects with scientifically robust knowledge. A total of 4906 individuals from the tree strata and 4565 individuals from the sapling strata were recorded, representing a total of 1192 species from 75 families. Only 0.8% of the tree species and 0.5% of the sapling species occurred in all sampled sectors, with over 84% of the species occurring in a single watershed sector for both strata. We observed a high species heterogeneity modulated by turnover (92.3% in the tree, and 92.7% in the sapling strata) among sites. Overall, our research revealed a gradient of soil fertility influencing species composition across different strata. Additionally, we discovered that preserved landscapes had a positive impact on species diversity within both strata. The species exclusivity in the sampled sites and the high turnover rate imply the need to consider multiple reference ecosystems when restoring the watershed to reduce the risk of biotic homogenization. Research on pharmaceutical dry powders has been increasing worldwide, along with increased therapeutic strategies for an application through the pulmonary or the nasal routes. In vitro methodologies and tests that mimic the respiratory environment and the process of inhalation itself are, thus, essential. The literature frequently reports cell-based in vitro assays that involve testing the dry powders in suspension. This experimental setting is not adequate, as both the lung and the nasal cavity are devoid of abundant liquid. However, devices that permit powder insufflation over cells in culture are either scarce or technically complex and expensive, which is not feasible in early stages of research. In this context, this work proposes the development of a device that allows the delivery of dry powders onto cell surfaces, thus simulating inhalation more appropriately. Subsequently, a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) was used to establish a technique enabling the determination of dry powder deposition profiles. Additionally, the determination of the viability of respiratory cells (A549) after the insufflation of a dry powder using the developed device was performed. In all, a prototype for dry powder insufflation was designed and developed, using 3D printing methods for its production. It allowed the homogenous dispersion of the insufflated powders over a petri dish and a QCM crystal, and a more detailed study on how dry powders disperse over the supports. The device, already protected by a patent, still requires further improvement, especially regarding the method for powder weighing and the efficiency of the insufflation process, which is being addressed. As we all acknowledge benefits of ostomies, they can come with significant morbidity, quality of life issues, and major complications, especially during reversal procedures. In recent years, we have started to observe that similar graft and patient survival can be achieved without ostomies in certain cases. This observation and practice adopted in a few large-volume transplant centers opened a new discussion about the necessity of ostomies in intestinal transplantation. The Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) presents global health challenges, with Brazil experiencing outbreaks since its introduction in 2014. In 2023, following a CHIKV outbreak in Minas Gerais (MG), social media was used to optimize an entomological survey aimed at identifying vectors and viral lineages and assessing insecticide resistance. Following Instagram posts, residents with suspected CHIKV infection were able to schedule mosquito aspirations. In total, 421 mosquitoes (165 Aedes aegypti and 256 Culex quinquefasciatus ) were captured from 40 households in Salinas city (MG) and tested for the Dengue, Zika, and Chikungunya viruses through RT-qPCR. Twelve of 57 pools (10 Ae. aegypti and two Cx. quinquefasciatus ) tested positive for CHIKV RNA. Viral RNA was also detected in the heads of nine Ae. aegypti , indicating viral dissemination but not in Cx. quinquefasciatus . Genome sequencing yielded the first near-complete genome from the 2023 outbreak, unveiling that the CHIKV strain belonged to the East/Central/South African (ECSA) genotype. Additionally, genetic analyses revealed high frequencies of kdr alleles, including in CHIKV-infected mosquitoes, suggesting resistance to pyrethroid insecticides in this Ae. aegypti population. Social media was important for guiding mosquito-capture efforts in CHIKV transmission hotspots, thus optimizing the opportunity for viral detection. These findings emphasize the urgent need for innovative vector studies and control strategies, as well as interdisciplinary approaches in public health interventions.

Interesterified fats have been used to replace trans-fat in ultra-processed foods. However, their metabolic effects are not completely understood. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the effects related to glucose homeostasis in response to interesterified palm oil or refined palm oil intake. Four-week-old male Swiss mice were randomly divided into four experimental groups and fed the following diets for 8 weeks: a normocaloric and normolipidic diet containing refined palm oil (PO group) or interesterified palm oil (IPO group); a hypercaloric and high-fat diet containing refined PO (POHF group) or interesterified PO (IPOHF group). Metabolic parameters related to body mass, adiposity and food consumption showed no significant differences. As for glucose homeostasis parameters, interesterified palm oil diets (IPO and IPOHF) resulted in higher glucose intolerance than unmodified palm oil diets (PO and POHF). Euglycemic-hyperinsulinemic clamp assessment showed a higher endogenous glucose production in the IPO group compared with the PO group. Moreover, the IPO group showed significantly lower p-AKT protein content (in the muscle and liver tissues) when compared with the PO group. Analysis of glucose-stimulated static insulin secretion (11.1 mmol/L glucose) in isolated pancreatic islets showed a higher insulin secretion in animals fed interesterified fat diets (IPO and IPOHF) than in those fed with palm oil (PO and POHF). An integral part of Brazil's public health system, psychiatric emergency services have been instrumental in improving qualified support for crisis situations involving mental disorders in an equitable, universally accessible, and humanized way. The purpose of this article is to present a systematic review and consensus on the infrastructure and the ideal team for psychiatric emergencies services in Brazil. The authors searched electronic databases including MEDLINE (PubMed), SciELO, and Cochrane, in addition to documents from the World Health Organization, the Brazilian Ministry of Health, and other authorities. Of the 6839 manuscripts found, 46 were included. The content analysis summarized consensus statements through the Delphi method, and, after a series of interactive versions, a final report was produced. Models for changing psychiatric emergency services are assessed. It was determined that the emergency care network must be supervised by qualified management, and all health equipment and units must be effectively integrated. Psychiatric emergency services need adequate infrastructure, qualified staff (including a psychiatrist), sufficient consultation and observation space, tools and resources for differential diagnosis, training for all staff members, and communication with the health care network to facilitate referrals following patient discharge. Standardized models should be available to public health managers to guide the development of new services and adjust existing ones, always seeking improvement. Background: Playing guitar involves several physical demands, most inclusive of which are long hours of practice, which can make musculoskeletal symptoms common., Objetive: To determine the epidemiology of neuromuscular injuries in guitar players residing in Portugal and risk factors., Methods: The sample consisted of 105 guitar players, being 103 (98.10%) men, aged between 30-75 years (29,83±10,23). The measurement instrument used was a digital survey, shared by email, on social networks and in person., Results: Fifty-six (53.30%) guitar players had injuries throughout their musical practice, totaling 132 injuries, 13 (12.40%) guitar players were injured at the time of assessment and 31 (29.5%) guitar players had injuries in the last 12 months, totaling 63 injuries. The value of injury proportion was 0.29 (CI 95% : 0.14-0.44) and the injury rate was 0.42 injuries per 1,000 hours of music practice. The most common types of injury were: tendinopathy (22; 34.92%) and low back pain (9; 14.29%). The most affected anatomical sites were: wrist (18; 28.57%) and lumbar spine (10; 15.87%). Repetitive movement was the injury mechanism most mentioned by guitar players (24; 35.29%) followed by maintaining postures for a prolonged period of time (15; 22.06%). Guitar players who did not warm up before practicing were 0.33 (CI: 0.13-0.79; p = 0.013) more likely to have an injury., Conclusions: There was a high percentage of injuries in guitar players and failure to warm up was a risk factor for the development of injuries. This type of study can help in creating injury prevention strategies in this type of population.

Introduction: Chagas disease (CD), caused by protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi), is a neglected disease that affects millions of people worldwide. The parasite clearance by the immune cells is accomplished by the activation of inflammation and production of reactive oxygen species, including nitric oxide (NO) that can lead to tissue injury and DNA damage. On the other hand, to balance the oxidative environment and decrease free radicals, there is an antioxidant system composed of enzymes and vitamins. The aim was to evaluate oxidative stress parameters in symptomatic and asymptomatic patients with Chagas disease., Methods: Participants were divided into three groups: indeterminate CD (asymptomatic, n = 8), CD with cardiac/digestive involvement (symptomatic, n = 14), and Control healthy individuals (n = 20). Background: Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) consumption is associated with pediatric overweight and obesity. Aim: To evaluate the UPFs consumption in children classified either as eutrophic or with excess weight (overweight and obesity). It was also described the fasting plasma glucose, total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and the correlation between UPFs consumption and cardiometabolic risk factors. Methods: A total of 139 children aged 7-10years of both sexes, living in Northeast Brazil were classified as eutrophic ( n  = 65) or excess weight ( n  = 62). Waist circumference (WC), percentage of body fatness (% BF), fat-free-mass and fat mass were evaluated. Fasting blood sample were collected for biochemical analysis. Food consumption was classified according to the degree of processing. Results: Children with excess weight had a reduction in plasma HDL concentration (45.00; IQR:36.00-54.50 mg/dL vs. 40.00; IQR:35.75-45.25 mg/dL; p  = 0.021) and an increase in blood glucose (82.00; IQR:79.00-86.00 mg/dL vs. 86.00; IQR:81.00-90.00 mg/dL; p  < 0.001) and TG (64.00; IQR:45.00-92.50 mg/dL vs. 81.00; IQR:57.50-111.75 mg/dL; p  < 0.021) when compared with the eutrophic children. UPFs accounted for 43.43% of the total calories consumed by children. Children with excess weight had higher total energy consumption resulting from consumption of UPFs (714.30 ± 26.32 kcal vs. 848.06 ± 349.46 kcal; p  = 0.011). The absolute consumption of the UPFs showed a positive correlation with WC ( r  = 0.202; p  = 0.023) and %BF ( r  = 0.198; p  = 0.026). Conclusion: UPFs consumption was higher for children with excess weight and positively correlated with two cardiometabolic risk factors, suggesting the need for strengthening public policies that discourage the consumption of these foods.

To evaluate the effects of melatonin (MEL) on the expression of toll-like receptor-4 (TLR4); myeloid differentiation primary response protein-88 (MyD88); TIR-domain-containing adapter-inducing interferon-β (TRIF); IFN regulatory-factor-3 (IRF-3); nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB); plasma concentrations of interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS); and lipid profile of rats with apical periodontitis (AP) fed on a high-fat diet (HFD). Eighty 60-day-old rats were divided into eight groups: control, AP, HFD, HFDAP, CNMEL, APMEL, HFDMEL and HFDAPMEL. HFD groups were fed on a HFD for 107 days. On day 7, experimental AP was induced in the AP groups, and after 70 days, MEL (5 mg/kg) was administered to the MEL groups for 30 days. Plasma concentrations of LPS and IL-1β were analyzed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and the lipid profile was analyzed using biochemical tests. The expression of proteins involved in the TLR4 pathway (TLR4, MyD88, TRIF, IRF-3 and NF-κB) in the gastrocnemius muscle (GM) was evaluated using western blotting and qRT-PCR. Treatment with MEL decreased IRF-3 protein expression in GM and IL-1β plasma concentration in the APMEL and HFDMEL groups. Reduction in LPS plasma concentration was reported only in the HFDMEL group. Additionally, a decrease in LDL and an increase in HDL were observed in the HFDMEL and HFDAPMEL groups. Treatment with MEL exhibited anti-inflammatory and anti-hyperlipidemic effects attributed to HFD and AP by reducing the plasma concentrations of IL-1β and LPS in addition to reducing IRF-3 protein expression in the GM, which is associated with the production of inflammatory cytokines., (© 2022. Background: Maternal periodontal disease (PED) and apical periodontitis (AP) are associated insulin resistance (IR), increased tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) levels, and alterations in insulin signaling (IS) in the gastrocnemius muscle (GM) of adult offspring. TNF-α stimulates I kappa B kinase (IKK) and c-Jun N-terminal protein kinase (JNK), resulting in IS attenuation. However, studies that investigated the maternal true endodontic-periodontal lesion (EPL) in offspring are scarce, and in this case, the impact could be even higher. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of EPL on the IR, IS, and inflammatory pathways on the offspring GM., Methods: Female Wistar rats were distributed into control, AP, PED, and EPL groups. After 30 days of oral inflammation induction, rats from all groups were allowed to mate with healthy rats. The body weight of the offspring was assessed from birth to 75 days of age. After 75 days, the following measurements were performed: glycemia, insulinemia, IR, TNF-α content, and IKKα/β, JNK, pp185 (Tyr), and IRS-1 (Ser) phosphorylation status in the GM., Results: Maternal PED and EPL were associated with low birth weights. All maternal oral inflammations promoted IR and IS impairment in the GM and only maternal PED and EPL caused an increase in TNF-α content and IKKα/β phosphorylation status in the GM of offspring. Logistic and economical limitations are often the causes of dog owners not accurately monitoring the estrous cycle and the optimal insemination time. The aim of this study was to evaluate in vivo early embryonic development in bitches, after the analysis of sequential vaginal cytologies associated to single progesterone measurement and single laparoscopic insemination with high quality semen (fresh and with high spermatozoa concentration) or low-quality semen (frozen/thawed and with low spermatozoa concentration) at 48 h post- ovulation time predicted on a single progesterone measurement. Ten bitches were inseminated with 250 x 10 6 fresh spermatozoa (80% motility), and ten with 80 x 10 6 frozen/thawed spermatozoa (60% motility) in the cranial part of each uterine horn. Seven days later, ovariohysterectomy was performed and the oviducts and uterine horns and body were flushed to recover embryos and unfertilized oocytes. In 80% of the bitches inseminated with fresh and 50% of bitches inseminated with frozen/thawed semen, embryos at 2 to 8 cells stage were recovered mostly from the, oviducts. This study indicates that pregnancies can be obtained with a single laparoscopic intrauterine insemination after single serum progesterone measurement, although with a low number of embryos. Mounting evidence implicates extracellular vesicles (EVs) factors as mediators of cell therapy. Cardiosphere-derived cells are cardiac-derived cells with tissue reparative capacity. Activation of a downstream target of wnt/β-catenin signalling, tryptophan 2,3 dioxygenase (TDO2) renders therapeutically inert skin fibroblasts cardioprotective. Here, we investigate the mechanism by which concentrated conditioned media from TDO2-augmented fibroblasts (TDO2-CCM) exert cardioprotective effects. TDO2-CCM is cardioprotective in a mouse model of MI compared to CCM from regular fibroblasts (HDF-CCM). Transcriptomic analysis of cardiac tissue at 24 h demonstrates broad suppression of inflammatory and cell stress markers in animals given TDO2-CCM compared to HDF-CCM or vehicle. Sequencing analysis of TDO2-EV RNA demonstrated abundance of a small Y-derived small RNA dubbed 'NT4'. Purification of TDO2-EVs by size-exclusion chromatography and RNAse protection assays demonstrated that NT4 is encapsulated inside EVs. Consistently with TDO2-CCM, macrophages exposed to NT4 showed suppression of the inflammatory and cell stress mediators, particularly p21/cdkn1a. NT4-depleted TDO2-CCM resulted in diminished immunomodulatory capacity. Finally, administration of NT4 alone was cardioprotective in an acute model of myocardial infarction. Aim: To analyse the effects of melatonin (ME) treatment on oxidative stress and insulin resistance (IR) in rats with apical periodontitis (AP) fed a high-fat diet (HFD)., Methodology: Eighty 60-day-old rats were divided into eight groups: control (CN), AP, HFD with AP (HFDAP), control with ME (CNME), AP with ME (APME), HFD with ME (HFDME) and HFD with AP+ME (HFDAPME). The animals from the HFD groups were fed a HFD throughout the experimental period. On day 7, the animals from the AP groups were subjected to experimental AP, and after 70 days, the ME groups were treated for 30 days. Glycaemia, insulinaemia, homeostatic model assessment for IR index, tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and interleukin-6 were analysed in plasma using biochemical tests and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), carbonyl protein (CP), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione (GSH) and total antioxidant capacity (ferric reducing antioxidant power [FRAP]) were analysed in the gastrocnemius muscle., Results: (1) Association of AP and HDF exacerbated IR, and ME treatment improved this alteration; (2) AP and HFD and their association showed increased TNF-α, and ME reversed it; (3) TBARS increased in the AP and HFDAP groups, and ME reversed only in the group with the association of disease and diet; (4) CP increased in all HFD groups and improved in the ME groups; (5) GSH activity decreased in all experimental groups, and ME increased this parameter only in the CN and AP groups; (6) FRAP did not change between the groups, but ME treatment increased its activity in the AP and HFD groups; (7) ME increased SOD in the CN and AP groups., Conclusion: Apical periodontitis and HFD promoted IR, and the association of AP with diet promoted IR exacerbation; this resistance might have been caused by an increase in TNF-α. AP promoted more intense changes in lipid oxidative damage than in protein oxidative damage. In non-enzymatic antioxidant defence, it was observed that both AP and HFD and their association promoted a decrease in GSH levels. Although studies have shown positive effects of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) or prostaglandin F 2α (PGF 2α ) at the moment of fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) in the conception rate (CR) of cattle, its effects on treatments based on progesterone (P4) and estradiol benzoate (EB) is still not conclusive. The objective of this study was (1) to evaluate the effect of a PGF 2α analogue at FTAI in the CR of crossbred beef cows submitted to a 11d FTAI protocol based on P4 and EB; and (2) to describe the CR between PGF 2α -treated and control cows in different body condition scores (BCS) and parity categories. Crossbred (½ Nellore and ½ Angus) beef cows were submitted to a synchronization protocol and randomly assigned into 2 groups: Control (n = 163), at FTAI cows received 2 mL of saline solution as a placebo, and PGF 2α (n = 163), at FTAI cows were treated with PGF 2α analogue (10 mg of dinoprost tromethamine). Pregnancy diagnosis was performed 33d post-FTAI. Binary logistic regression model was used to analyze the effect of PGF 2α treatment on CR. There was no difference in CR between PGF 2α and control groups ( P > 0.05; odds ratio (OR) = 0.92; confidence interval (CI) = 0.59-1.4). A greater CR was found in heifers ( P = 0.0006, OR = 2.65, CI = 1.61 - 4.38) and multiparous ( P = 0.0006, OR = 2.12, CI = 1.04 - 4.3) when compared to primiparous cows. Cows with low BCS (4; 9-point scale) showed lower CR when compared with moderate BCS (5-6; 9-point scale) ( P < 0.05; OR = 0.10; CI = 0.06 - 0.18). There was no numerical difference on CR between PGF 2α -treated and control cows in different BCS and parity categories. The genus Orthopoxvirus (OPXV) of the family Poxviridae comprises several viruses that are capable of infecting a wide range of hosts. One of the most widespread OPXVs is the Vaccinia virus (VACV), which circulates in zoonotic cycles in South America, especially in Brazil, infecting domestic and wild animals and humans and causing economic losses as well as impacting public health. Despite this, little is known about the presence and/or exposure of neotropical primates to orthopoxviruses in the country. In this study, we report the results of a search for evidence of OPVX infections in neotropical free-living primates in the state of Minas Gerais, southeast Brazil. The sera or liver tissues of 63 neotropical primates were examined through plaque reduction neutralization tests (PRNT) and real-time PCR. OPXV-specific neutralizing antibodies were detected in two sera (4.5%) from Callithrix penicillata , showing 55% and 85% reduction in plaque counts, evidencing their previous exposure to the virus. Both individuals were collected in urban areas. All real-time PCR assays were negative. This is the first time that evidence of OPXV exposure has been detected in C. penicillata , a species that usually lives at the interface between cities and forests, increasing risks of zoonotic transmissions through spillover/spillback events. In this way, studies on the circulation of OPXV in neotropical free-living primates are necessary, especially now, with the monkeypox virus being detected in new regions of the planet.

The relationship between body weight gain and the onset of obesity is linked to environmental and behavioral factors, and may be dependent on biological predisposing. Artificial neural networks are useful predictive tools in the field of artificial intelligence, and can be used to identify risk factors related to obesity. The aim of this study is to establish, based on artificial neural networks, a predictive model for overweight/obesity in children based on the recognition and selection of patterns associated with birth weight, gestational age, height deficit, food consumption, and the physical activity level, TV time and family context. Sample consisted of 149 children (72 = eutrophic and 77 = overweight/obese). Collected data consisted of anthropometry and demographic characteristics, gestational age, birth weight, food consumption, physical activity level, TV time and family context. The gestational age, daily caloric intake and birth weight were the main determinants of the later appearance of overweight and obesity. In addition, the family context linked to socioeconomic factors, such as the number of residents in the household, had a great impact on excess weight. The physical activity level was the least important variable. Modifiable risk factors, such as the inadequate food consumption, and non-modifiable factors such as gestational age were the main determinants for overweight/obesity in children. Our data indicate that, combating excess weight should also be carried out from a social and preventive perspective during critical periods of development, such as pregnancy, lactation and early childhood, to reach a more effective strategy to combat obesity and its complications in childhood and adult life.

Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis is a bacillus that causes caseous lymphadenitis in small ruminants, leading to great losses to rural producers; thus, an efficient diagnosis is necessary for using disease control measures. This study aimed to evaluate the antigenic potential of four C. pseudotuberculosis recombinant proteins (rSodC, rPknG, rNanH, and rSpaC) against sera of goat and sheep experimentally infected with one of three different C. pseudotuberculosis strains. Goats were infected with CAP76 or CAP21 strain (n = 10), sheep with VD57 strain (n = 6), and a group of not-infected animals (goats and sheep) were kept as a healthy control (healthy n = 12). Sera were collected at 0, 14, 60, 90, 180, or 190 days after inoculation for antigenicity testing using Western blotting and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) techniques. Cross-reactivity tests with recombinant proteins were performed in goat serum experimentally vaccinated with Nocardia sp. or Rhodococcus equi bacterin. The rSodC protein showed discriminatory antigenic reactivity with a statistically significant difference against three different C. pseudotuberculosis strains evaluated in goats and sheep samples, while rPknG showed statistical significance only against two C. pseudotuberculosis strains evaluated in goats. rSodC was proved to be a strong candidate as a tool for diagnosis of C. pseudotuberculosis infection, once it was able to recognize antibodies against all strains evaluated in goats and sheep., (© 2022. Soybean crops are of great economic importance worldwide and in Brazil. This crop is a commodity that provides large amounts of financial resources to the country. Soybean productivity is influenced by several biotic and abiotic factors, and most of these factors cannot be controlled by agricultural practices. Due to the soybean cultivars used and their required yields, the soybean crop, similar to other agriculturally important crops, requires large amounts of mineral fertilizers. There are several microorganisms that colonize soybean plant roots without causing symptoms or damage. These microorganisms that colonize plant tissues are called endophytes and can often promote plant growth and development. Little is known about the factors that influence endophyticism. The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether Bacillus subtilis inoculant concentrations and levels of mineral fertilization recommended for the crop have any influence on the endophytic microbiome of soybean plant roots. Plant growth-promoting endophytic microorganisms in agriculture have been expanding in Brazil and are an excellent strategy to face the challenges of current agriculture, such as reducing production costs with fewer environmental impacts, without detriment to productivity. However, little is known about the factors that can affect the colonization of endophytic such as inoculant concentration and mineral fertilization. The present study aimed to evaluate the influence of these factors on soybean and maize crops and found that for soybean crops, the highest Bacillus subtilis concentration of 1 × 10 4 and 1 × 10 10  CFU ml -1 promoted the highest number of recovered bacteria, when there was no mineral fertilization. However, mineral fertilization limited the number of recovered bacteria, suggesting that mineral fertilization interferes with endophytic colonization. For maize crops, the highest number of recovered bacteria occurred from the concentration of 1 × 10 6  CFU ml -1 , not differing from the highest concentrations. A mineral fertilization dose of 25% promoted the greatest B. subtilis recovery compared to the other treatments. Regarding plant development, the highest microbial inoculum concentrations did not necessarily promote greater positive growth promotion effects compared to the concentration of 1 × 10 4  CFU ml -1 for both crops. The results also suggest that the higher number of endophytic bacteria recovered in the plant does not necessarily affect plant growth in the same proportion. For soybean plants, there is a strong tendency that with the increase in the B. subtilis inoculant concentration, the need for mineral fertilization doses to achieve the same plant development is consequently increased, and inoculations with 1 × 10 5 and 1 × 10 6  CFU ml -1 with fertilization doses between 44% and 62% are the ideal combinations for greater plant development. In maize plants, the best growth promotion response (height) was obtained using inoculation concentration of 1 × 10 2 and 1 × 10 10  CFU ml -1 , increasing according to the increase in fertilization doses. The findings suggest, for soybean crop, that these high inoculum concentrations required more photosynthetic metabolites from the plants and more nutrients from the soil. Histopathologies are widely recognized as biomarkers of environmental pollution. In this sense, we evaluated the putative relationship of gill histopathologies and distinct ecological impacts in two regions of Todos os Santos Bay (BTS), Brazil, the largest bay in Northeastern Brazil, South Atlantic. We compared the presence and concentration of metals (Al, As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, V, and Zn) in water, sediments, and gills and gill histopathologies of a demersal fish (Diapterus rhombeus) and a benthic fish (Ogcocephalus vespertilio). As expected, fish and sediment samples from historically contaminated areas (Aratu) showed more remarkable traces of metals than apparently low-impact areas (Jaguaripe). Likewise, the DTC (degree of tissue change) index and the volume densities were higher in fish caught in Aratu. In addition, the Diapterus rhombeus species showed more potential than Ogcocephalus vespertilio for risk assessment as it showed more responses to the environment reflected on more histopathologies. These data support the effectiveness of incorporating functional gill morphology to monitor impacts on estuarine biota that can be used as a reference to improve the management of ecosystems and prevent harm to human health., (© 2021. Understanding the mechanisms controlling forest carbon storage is crucial to support "nature-based" solutions for climate change mitigation. We used a dataset of 892 Atlantic Forest inventories to assess the direct and indirect effects of environmental conditions, human impacts, tree community proprieties, and sampling methods on tree above-ground carbon stocks. We showed that the widely accepted drivers of carbon stocks, such as climate, soil, topography, and forest fragmentation, have a much smaller role than the forest disturbance history and functional proprieties of the Atlantic Forest. Specifically, within-forest disturbance level was the most important driver, with effect at least 30% higher than any of the environmental conditions individually. Thus, our findings suggest that the conservation of tropical carbon stocks may be dependable on, principally, avoiding forest degradation and that conservation policies focusing only on carbon may fail to protect tropical biodiversity.

Veterinarians, among other health professionals, are considered health professionals at high risk of exposure to and contraction of COVID-19. The main objective of this study is to assess changes in the clinical practices of veterinarians during the COVID-19 pandemic around prophylactic and biosafety measures, as well as to evaluate changes in workload and cost-benefit ratio. An online questionnaire was sent to veterinary professionals from July 2020 to July 2021 using Google Forms. A total of 1134 veterinarians answered the questionnaire on clinical experiences and biosafety practices during the COVID-19 pandemic. Veterinarians changed their routine clinical practices, as there was a reduction in working hours, and applied new patient approaches and advice to their owners, as well as restricting the number of people allowed inside. Biosafety measures were added in their workplaces, with an increase in the use of personal protective equipment. COVID-19 tests were administered at least once in 19.0%, and more than once in 9.5% of the respondents. Flu symptoms were present in 23.8% of the respondents, and 31.0% of the veterinarians attended to COVID-19 positive pet owners. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of retained placenta (RP) and clinical mastitis (CM) on the reproductive efficiency of crossbred dairy cows during the postpartum period and the effect in some innate immune system indicators. For this, two experiments were carried out. In the first, a total of 232 cows were evaluated and divided as: healthy control (n = 184), RP (n = 22), and CM (n = 26) groups. The RP and CM was evaluated until 30 days postpartum (DPP) and reproductive rates were measured. In experiment 2, cows were divided in control (n = 10), RP (n = 10), and CM (n = 30) groups. Between 40 and 50 DPP, clinical, gynecological examination and endometrial cytobrush were performed to evaluate subclinical endometritis (SE) and gene expression of interleukins 1β (IL-1β) and 6 (IL-6), chemokine ligand 5 (CCL5), estrogen α (ESR1), and progesterone (PGR) receptors by qRT-PCR analysis. In experiment 1, the conception rate at 1st artificial insemination (AI) was lower in RP and CM groups and pregnancy rate at 150 days decreased in CM group. Calving-to-1st AI interval and days open were shorter in healthy cows. In experiment 2, the occurrence of SE was 26.7% and higher in RP and CM groups. The expression of IL-1β increased in RP and CM groups, while IL-6 was less expressed in RP group. The CCL5, ESR1, and PGR were similar between groups. In conclusion, cows with RP and CM had their reproductive efficiency negatively affected and had they initial pro-inflammatory response improved by the increase of IL-β., (© 2022. People at risk of suicide tend to be isolated and cannot share their thoughts. For this reason, suicidal ideation monitoring becomes a hard task. Therefore, people at risk of suicide need to be monitored in a manner capable of identifying if and when they have a suicidal ideation, enabling professionals to perform timely interventions. This study aimed to develop the Boamente tool, a solution that collects textual data from users' smartphones and identifies the existence of suicidal ideation. The solution has a virtual keyboard mobile application that passively collects user texts and sends them to a web platform to be processed. The platform classifies texts using natural language processing and a deep learning model to recognize suicidal ideation, and the results are presented to mental health professionals in dashboards. Text classification for sentiment analysis was implemented with different machine/deep learning algorithms. A validation study was conducted to identify the model with the best performance results. The BERTimbau Large model performed better, reaching a recall of 0.953 (accuracy: 0.955; precision: 0.961; F-score: 0.954; AUC: 0.954). The proposed tool demonstrated an ability to identify suicidal ideation from user texts, which enabled it to be experimented with in studies with professionals and their patients.

The etiological agent of Chagas disease is the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi. According to the World Health Organization, about seven to eight million people are infected with T. cruzi worldwide. The main routes of transmission are vectorial and oral, which has assumed great epidemiological importance, since there is no legislation that requires the pasteurization of açaí pulp. The present work aimed to look T. cruzi in 35 samples of açaí ice cream sold at different points of sale, covering 11 different cities in São Paulo State. Thus, the parasitological technique of forced sieving and the molecular test of Polymerase Chain Reaction were performed. For PCR analysis were used the 121/122 primer that amplifies the kinetoplast of the T. cruzi DNA (kDNA). By the forced sieving technique, the açaí pulp aliquots were analyzed under different storage temperatures and in different periods. One positive sample (2.86%) were observed at six hours at room temperature, but without motility and negative to the PCR technique. Two other açaí samples (5.71%) were positive by PCR, but negative by forced sieving. High-fat diets seem to have a negative influence on the development of obesity and the processes associated with low-grade chronic systemic inflammation. In recent years, partial hydrogenated oil, rich in trans isomers, has been associated with deleterious health effects. It has been replaced by interesterified fat (IF). However, there is no evidence whether IF ingestion can exert adverse effects on the intestinal mucosa. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of IF on the intestinal mucosa of male Swiss mice fed a normal or high-fat diet, focusing on its effects on intestinal permeability and bacterial translocation and its possible damage to the intestinal epithelium. The animals were divided into 4 groups: Control (C) and Interesterified Control (IC) groups (10 En% lipids from unmodified fat or interesterified fat, respectively) and High Fat (HF) and Interesterified High Fat (IHF) groups (45 En% lipids from unmodified fat or interesterified fat, respectively). Compare to C, the IC, HF, and IHF groups presented flattened epithelium, a shorter villi length and a lower percentage of goblet cells, less mucin 2, an increased oxidative stress and more inflammatory cells, higher IL-1β, IL-17, and IL-23 levels. These groups also presented increased intestinal permeability and gene expression of the protein claudin 2, while JAM-A and claudin 1 gene expression was reduced. IC and IHF increased IL-6 levels while reducing occludin expression. In addition, the IC group also presented a mucosa with lesions of low intensity in the ileum, an increased mucin 5ac, TNF-α levels, and reduced occludin expression in the distal jejunum. Moreover, there was a significant increase in bacterial translocation in the IC group to blood, liver, and lungs, while HF and IHF groups presented bacterial translocation which was restricted to the mesenteric lymph nodes. Aims: To investigate the effect of resistance training-RT on glycemia, expression of the glucose transporter-GLUT4, bone mineral density-BMD, and microstructural and biomechanical properties of osteopenic rat bones in neonatal streptozotocin-induced diabetes., Main Methods: Sixty-four 5-day-old male rats were divided into two groups: control and diabetic rats injected with vehicle or streptozotocin, respectively. After 55 days, densitometric analysis-DA of the tibia was performed. These groups were subdivided into four subgroups: non-osteopenic control-CN, osteopenic control-OC, non-osteopenic diabetic-DM, and osteopenic diabetic-OD. The OC and OD groups were suspended by their tails for 21 days to promote osteopenia in the hindlimb; subsequently, a second DA was performed. The rats were subdivided into eight subgroups: sedentary control-SC, sedentary osteopenic control-SOC, exercised control-EC, exercised osteopenic control-EOC, sedentary diabetic-SD, sedentary osteopenic diabetic-SOD, exercised diabetic-ED, and exercised osteopenic diabetic-EOD. For RT, the rats climbed a ladder with weights secured to their tails for 12 weeks. After RT, a third DA was performed, and blood samples, muscles, and tibias were assessed to measure glycemia, insulinemia, GLUT4 content, bone maximum strength, fracture energy, extrinsic stiffness, BMD, cancellous bone area, trabecular number, and trabecular width., Key Findings: After RT, glycemia, GLUT4 content, BMD, and bone microstructural and biomechanical properties were improved in diabetic rats (osteopenic and non-osteopenic). However, RT had no effect on these parameters in the EC and SC groups., Significance: These results suggest that RT improves GLUT4 content, BMD, and microstructural and biomechanical properties of bone in osteopenic and non-osteopenic diabetic rats and is effective in controlling glycemia., (Copyright © 2021. Aim: To evaluate the final step of insulin signalling, inflammatory pathway (related to the inhibition of insulin signalling), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator 1α (PGC-1α) protein content and DNA methylation in the Slc2a4 gene promoter region in the skeletal muscle of adult male offspring of rats with apical periodontitis (AP) in a single tooth or in four teeth., Methodology: Female Wistar rats were distributed into three groups: a control group, a group with one tooth with AP and a group with four teeth with AP. Thirty days after induction of AP, female rats from all groups were mated with healthy male rats. When male offspring reached 75 days of age, the following analyses were performed in the gastrocnemius muscle (GM): insulin-stimulated Akt serine and threonine phosphorylation status; NF-κB p50 and p65 subunits phosphorylation status; GLUT4, TNF-α and PGC-1α protein content by Western blotting; GLUT4 and TNF-α gene expression by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR); and DNA methylation in the Slc2a4 gene promoter region by restriction digestion and real-time PCR. Analysis of variance was performed, followed by Tukey's post hoc test. p values <.05 were considered to be statistically significant., Results: Maternal AP in four teeth decreased insulin-stimulated Akt serine and threonine phosphorylation status, reduced GLUT4 gene expression and its protein content, and increased NF-κB p50 and p65 subunits phosphorylation status in the GM of adult offspring. There were no alterations in the parameters analysed in the GM of adult offspring of rats with AP in a single tooth. In addition, maternal AP did not affect TNF-α gene expression and its protein content, PGC-1α protein content and DNA methylation in the Slc2a4 gene promoter region in the GM of adult offspring., Conclusions: Maternal AP in four teeth was associated with impairment in the final step of insulin signalling in the GM of adult male offspring in rats. An increase in NF-κB activity may be involved in this decrease in insulin signalling. Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) and humic substances (HSs) are promising options for reducing the use of pesticides and mineral fertilizers. Although many studies have shown the effects of PGPB and HSs separately, little information is available on plant responses to the combined application of these biostimulants despite the great potential for the simultaneous action of these biological inputs. Thus, the objective of this review is to present an overview of scientific studies that addressed the application of PGPB and HSs to different crops. First, we discuss the effect of these biostimulants on biological nitrogen fixation, the various effects of the inoculation of beneficial bacteria combined with the application of HSs on promoting the growth of nonleguminous plants and how this combination can increase bacterial colonization of plant hosts. We also address the effect of PGPB and HSs on plant responses to abiotic stresses, in addition to discussing the role of HSs in protecting plants against pathogens. There is a lack of studies that address the role of PGPB + HSs in biocontrol. Understanding the factors involved in the promotion of plant growth through the application of PGPB and HSs can assist in the development of efficient biostimulants for agricultural management. There are no studies in literature on the effect of inoculant concentrations on plant growth promotion. Therefore, in the present study, two experiments were carried out, one under pot conditions and the other in the field with cotton crop, in order to verify the effect of Aspergillus and Bacillus concentrations on the biometric and nutritional parameters of plant and soil, in addition to yield. The pot experiment evaluated the effect of different concentrations, ranging from 1 × 10 4 to 1 × 10 10 colony-forming units per milliliter (CFU mL -1 ) of microorganisms Bacillus velezensis (Bv188), Bacillus subtilis (Bs248), B. subtilis (Bs290), Aspergillus brasiliensis (F111), Aspergillus sydowii (F112), and Aspergillus sp. versicolor section (F113) on parameters plant growth promotion and physicochemical and microbiological of characteristics soil. Results indicated that the different parameters analyzed are influenced by the isolate and microbial concentrations in a different way and allowed the selection of four microorganisms (Bs248, Bv188, F112, and F113) and two concentrations (1 × 10 4 and 1 × 10 10 CFU mL -1 ), which were evaluated in the field to determine their effect on yield. The results show that, regardless of isolate, inoculant concentrations promoted the same fiber and seed cotton yield. Introduction: Maternal apical periodontitis (AP) is associated with insulin resistance (IR) in adult offspring. Oxidative stress has been linked to IR. This study investigated insulin sensitivity (IS) and oxidative stress in the gastrocnemius muscle (GM) of adult offspring of rats with AP., Methods: Fifteen female Wistar rats were distributed into a control group, a group with 1 tooth with AP, and a group with 4 teeth with AP. Thirty days after AP induction, female rats were mated with healthy male rats. When male offspring reached 75 days of age, glycemia, insulinemia, and IS were determined. In the GM, the oxidative damage products (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and carbonyl protein) and activities of enzymatic (superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase) and nonenzymatic (glutathione and total antioxidant capacity) antioxidants were quantified. Analysis of variance was performed followed by the Tukey post hoc test (P < .05)., Results: Maternal AP was associated with decreased IS and changes in antioxidant activities (reduced superoxide dismutase and increased catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione) and decreased thiobarbituric acid reactive substance concentration in the GM of their adult offspring. However, maternal AP does not appear to affect glycemia, carbonyl protein concentration, and the nonenzymatic total antioxidant capacity in the GM of this offspring., Conclusions: Maternal AP modulates the antioxidant defense system in the GM of their adult offspring, attenuating lipid peroxidation in this tissue. This reflects part of an adaptive response of the offspring to the stimulation of the maternal chronic oral inflammatory process in which the organism acts by decreasing oxidative tissue damage in the postnatal stage.
