7. A salt-resistant solar evaporator with organic diradicaloids as photothermal materials for efficient and persistent desalination.

Abstract

Interfacial solar water evaporation (ISWE), a new water treatment technology, exhibits promising applications in the fields of fresh water and sustainable energy. Preventing surface salt accumulation while maintaining high solar-thermal conversion performance is a critical issue in ISWE-based desalination. Herein, we report a new strategy to design a salt-resistant solar evaporator, namely construction of a hydrophilic solar-thermal evaporator featuring capillary action enabled by loading organic photothermal materials onto a biomass substrate. Using diradicaloid boron-doped molecular carbons as photothermal materials, the as-prepared solar evaporators exhibit a temperature rise to 74 °C under 1 kW m−2 simulated solar irradiation. The solar-to-vapor efficiency is up to 93%, and the rate of water evaporation reaches 1.36 kg m−2 h−1. Importantly, this evaporator can sustain long periods of evaporating water without surface salt accumulation from the outdoor evaporation of seawater for 14 days. Moreover, the waste heat may be used to generate electricity and collect minerals at the end of the device in the evaporation process. Therefore, the efficient and persistent water evaporation without salt accumulation is achieved for this salt-resistant solar evaporator, which will promote the development of the ISWE technology for solar desalination and other applications. 31. Enhancing stability of diradical polycyclic hydrocarbons viaP=O-attaching

Abstract

Diradical polycyclic hydrocarbons (PHs) have unique open-shell structures and interesting physical properties. However, owing to high reactivity of unpaired electrons, such open-shell organic diradicaloids are usually less stable than closed-shell systems, limiting their practical applications. In this study, we report P=O-attaching of diradical PHs as a new strategy to enhance their stability while maintaining diradical properties. Three P=O-attached PHs containing the indeno[1,2-b]fluorene, fluoreno[3,2-b]fluorene and indeno[2,1-b]fluorene π-skeletons, respectively, were designed and synthesized. As theoretically and experimentally proved, two of them have the relatively large diradical characters and open-shell singlet diradical nature. In comparison to their all-carbon analogues, the attached electron-withdrawing P=O groups endow them with much lower LUMO/HOMO energy levels but preserved magnetic activities and physical properties, such as thermally accessible triplet species and multi-redox ability. Moreover, the P=O groups effectively decrease their oxidation activities and thereby lead to their remarkably excellent ambient stabilities. Thus, this P=O-attaching strategy will be applicable to other diradical PH systems and may promote the generation of stable organic diradicaloids for radical chemistry and materials.

Abstract

Strongly red luminescent and water-soluble probes are very important for studying biological events and processes. Fluorescent nanoparticles (NPs) built from the aggregation-induced emission luminogen (AIEgen) and amphipathic polymeric matrixes have been considered as promising candidates for bioimaging. However, AIE NPs with long wavelength absorption suitable for in vivo application are still scarce. In this work, three AIE-active red-emissive BODIPY derivatives with long-wavelength absorption were rationally designed and synthesized. Then three NPs based on these AIEgens exhibit bright red photoluminescence with high fluorescence quantum yield in aqueous media. These NPs uniformly dispersed in water and showed excellent stability and good biocompatibility. They can be readily internalized by HeLa cells, and the staining process is performed by simply shaking the culture with cells for just a few seconds at room temperature, which indicates an ultrafast and easy-to-operate staining protocol. More importantly, long-term tracing in living cells and mouse over 15 days is successfully achieved. The strong fluorescence signals, ultrafast staining procedure, and long-term tracing abilities indicate that these AIE NPs hold great potential for monitoring biological processes.

Abstract

Three D--A conjugated copolymers based on the same 8,10-dihydro-9Hbisthieno[ 2 0,3 0:7.8;3 00,2 00:5.6]naphtho[2,3-d]imidazol-9-one (DTNIA) acceptor unit and different donor units, i.e., 2-dodecylbenzo[1,2-b:3,4-b 0:6,5-b 00]trithiophene (3TB) (P1), 5,6-dioctylnaphtho[2,1-b:3,4-b 0]dithiophene (DTN) (P2), and 4,5-diundecylbenzo[2,1-b:3,4-b 0]dithiophene (DTB) (P3), are formulated and synthesized. All the copolymers exhibit deep highest occupied molecular energy levels of -5.43, -5.50, and -5.51 eV for P1, P2, and P3, respectively, and show an optical bandgap of 2.18, 2.12, and 2.11 eV, for P1, P2, and P3, respectively. These copolymers are used as donors for the construction of polymer solar cells combining ITIC-m as an electron acceptor. The optimized polymer solar cells based on P1:ITIC-m, P2:ITIC-m, and P3:ITIC-m realize overall power conversion efficiency of ≈9.62%, 12.84%, and 11.80%, respectively. The greater value of open circuit voltage for P2 and P3 relative to P1 may be due to the deeper highest occupied molecular orbital energy level of P2 and P3 as compared to P1. The highest power conversion efficiency for the P2-based polymer solar cells may be originated from the denser π--π stacking distance and relatively improved crystallinity, which are advantageous for balanced charge transport, resulting in a comparatively high fill factor and short circuit current. Abstract

The fast evolution of the narrow bandgap nonfullerene acceptors requires new conjugated wide bandgap polymers for the use of nonfullerene polymer solar cells (PSCs). Herein, two new wide bandgap A1–D1–A2–D1 conjugated polymers with the same dithieno[2,3‐e:3′,2′‐g]isoindole‐7,9(8H)‐dione (DTID) acceptor (A1) and thiophene donor (D1) and different A2 acceptor units, i.e., benzothiadiazole (BT) and fluorinated benzothiadiazole (f‐BT) denoted as P113 and P114, are designed, and the effect of fluorination of the BT acceptor unit on the photovoltaic properties of PSCs using nonfullerene acceptors is investigated. It is found that the incorporation of fluorine atom into the BT acceptor unit increases the absorption coefficients and the relative dielectric constant. The increase in photoluminescence quenching, reduction in charge recombination loss, and improvement in the charge carrier life are observed for P114. All these factors result in the drastically improved power conversion efficiency of P114:ITIC‐m‐based PSC to 10.42% with a small energy loss of 0.56 eV as compared with the P113 counterpart (8.74% with an energy loss of 0.69 eV) under identical conditions. The low energy loss is beneficial to overcome the trade‐off between open‐circuit voltage and short‐circuit current. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
