Search

M60, an elliptical galaxy located 16.5~Mpc away, has an active nucleus with a very low luminosity and an extremely low accretion rate. Its central supermassive black hole has a mass of $M_{\rm BH}\sim4.5\times10^{9}\, M_{\odot}$ and a Schwarzschild radii corresponding to $R_{\rm S}\sim5.4\,\mu\mathrm{as}$. To investigate the nature of its innermost radio nucleus, data from the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 4.4 and 7.6~GHz were reduced. The VLBA images reveal a compact component with total flux densities of $\sim$20~mJy at both frequencies, a size of $\leq$0.27~mas (99.7$\%$ confidence level), about 0.022~pc ($50\,R_{\rm S}$) at 7.6~GHz, and a brightness temperature of $\geq6\times10^{9}$~K. This suggests that the observed centi-parsec-scale compact core could be attributed to a nonthermal jet base or an advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) with nonthermal electrons. The extremely compact structure also supports the presence of an SMBH in the center. Stars form in galaxies, from gas that has been accreted from the intergalactic medium. Simulations have shown that recycling of gas-the reaccretion of gas that was previously ejected from a galaxy-could sustain star formation in the early Universe. We observe the gas surrounding a massive galaxy at redshift 2.3 and detect emission lines from neutral hydrogen, helium, and ionized carbon that extend 100 kiloparsecs from the galaxy. The kinematics of this circumgalactic gas is consistent with an inspiraling stream. The carbon abundance indicates that the gas had already been enriched with elements heavier than helium, previously ejected from a galaxy. When discovered, SN~2017egm was the closest (redshift $z=0.03$) hydrogen-poor superluminous supernova (SLSN-I) and a rare case that exploded in a massive and metal-rich galaxy. Thus, it has since been extensively observed and studied. We report spectroscopic data showing strong emission at around He~I $\lambda$10,830 and four He~I absorption lines in the optical. Consequently, we classify SN~2017egm as a member of an emerging population of helium-rich SLSNe-I (i.e., SLSNe-Ib). We also present our late-time photometric observations. By combining them with archival data, we analyze high-cadence ultra-violet, optical, and near-infrared light curves spanning from early pre-peak ($\sim -20\,d$) to late phases ($\sim +300\,d$). We obtain its most complete bolometric light curve, in which multiple bumps are identified. None of the previously proposed models can satisfactorily explain all main light-curve features, while multiple interactions between the ejecta and circumstellar material (CSM) may explain the undulating features. The prominent infrared excess with a blackbody luminosity of $10^7$--$10^8\,L_{sun}$ detected in SN~2017egm could originate from the emission of either an echo of a pre-existing dust shell, or newly-formed dust, offering an additional piece of evidence supporting the ejecta-CSM interaction model. Moreover, our analysis of deep $Chandra$ observations yields the tightest-ever constraint on the X-ray emission of an SLSN-I, amounting to an X-ray-to-optical luminosity ratio $\lesssim 10^{-3}$ at late phases ($\sim100-200\,d$), which could help explore its close environment and central engine., Comment: 25 pages, 14 Figures, 4 Tables; accepted for publication in ApJ (Mar. 2023)

The fast blue optical transients (FBOTs) are a new population of extragalactic transients of unclear physical origin. A variety of mechanisms have been proposed including failed supernova explosion, shock interaction with a dense medium, young magnetar, accretion onto a compact object, and stellar tidal disruption event, but none is conclusive. Here we report the discovery of a possible X-ray quasi-periodicity signal with a period of $\sim$250 second (at a significance level of 99.76%) in the brightest FBOT AT2018cow through the analysis of XMM-Newton/PN data. The signal is independently detected at the same frequency in the average power density spectrum from data taken from the Swift telescope, with observations covering from 6 to 37 days after the optical discovery, though the significance level is lower (94.26%). This suggests that the QPO frequency may be stable over at least 1.1$\times$ 10$^{4}$ cycles. Assuming the $\sim$250 second QPO to be a scaled-down analogue of that typically seen in stellar mass black holes, a black hole mass of $\sim10^{3}-10^{5}$ solar masses could be inferred. The overall X-ray luminosity evolution could be modeled with the stellar tidal disruption by a black hole of $\sim10^4$ solar masses, providing a viable mechanism to produce AT2018cow. Recently we discovered an unprecedented supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) candidate in the nearby Seyfert galaxy SDSS J1430+2303, which is predicted to merge within three years. X-ray spectroscopy may bring unique kinematic evidence for the last inspiraling stage, when the binary is too close to allow each of them to hold an individual broad line region. We try to confirm the unique SMBHB merger event and understand the associated high-energy processes from a comprehensive X-ray view. We observed SDSS J1430+2303 with XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, Chandra, and Swift spanning the first ~200 days since its discovery. X-ray variability, up to a factor of 7, has been detected on a timescale of a few days. The broadband spectrum from 0.2-70 keV can be well fitted with a model consisting of a power law and a relativistic reflection covered by a warm absorber. The properties of the warm absorber changed dramatically, for example, with a decrease in the line-of-sight velocity from ~0.2c to ~0.02c, between the two XMM-Newton observations separated by only 19 days, which can be naturally understood in the context of the SMBHB; although, the clumpy wind scenario cannot be completely excluded. Broad Fe Kalpha emission has been robustly detected, though its velocity shift or profile change is not yet measurable. We present the discovery of a sample of 18 low-redshift (z<0.3) galaxies with transient nuclear radio emission. These galaxies are not or weakly detected in the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty cm survey performed on 1993-2009, but have brightened significantly in the radio flux (by a factor of >5) in the epoch I (2017-2019) observations of Very Large Array Sky Survey (VLASS). All the 18 galaxies have been detected in the epoch II VLASS observations in 2020-2021, for which the radio flux is found to evolve slowly (by a factor of ~40%) over a period of about three years. 15 galaxies have been observed in the Rapid ASKAP Continuum Survey, and a flat or inverted spectral slope between 888 MHz and 3 GHz is found. Based on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectra taken before the radio brightening, 14 out of 18 can be classified to be LINERs or normal galaxies with weak or no nuclear activity. Most galaxies are red and massive, with more than half having central black hole masses above 10^8Msun. We find that only one galaxy in our sample displays optical flare lasting for at least two months, and a long decay in the infrared light curve that can be explained as the dust-heated echo emission of central optical flare, such as a stellar tidal disruption event. We discuss several possibilities for the transient radio emission and conclude that it is likely associated with a new-born radio jet triggered by short sporadic fueling of supermassive black hole. Such a scenario can be tested with further multi-frequency radio observations of these sources through measuring their radio flux variability and spectral evolution., Comment: 20 pages with appendix, 13 figures, 3 tables. We hereby report the discovery of ATLAS17jrp as an extraordinary TDE in star-forming galaxy SDSSJ162034.99+240726.5 in our recent sample of mid-infrared outbursts in nearby galaxies. Its optical/UV light curves rise to a peak luminosity $\sim1.06\times10^{44}\rm\,erg\,s^{-1}$ in about a month and then decay as $\rm t^{-5/3}$ with a roughly constant temperature around 19000~K, and the optical spectra show a blue continuum and very broad Balmer lines with FWHM$\sim$15000 km/s which gradually narrowed to 1400 km/s within 4 years, all agreeing well with other optical TDEs. A delayed and rapidly rising X-ray flare with a peak luminosity $\rm \sim 1.27\times10^{43}\,erg\,s^{-1}$ was detected at $\rm \sim$ 170 days after the optical peak. The high MIR luminosity of ATLAS17jrp ($\sim2\times10^{43} \rm\,erg\,s^{-1}$) has revealed a distinctive dusty environment with covering factor as high as $\sim0.2$, that is comparable with that of torus in active galactic nuclei but at least one order of magnitude higher than normal optical TDEs. Therefore, ATLAS17jrp turns out to be one of the rare unambiguous TDE found in star-forming galaxies and its high dust covering factor implies that the dust extinction could play an important role in the absence of optical TDEs in star-forming galaxies., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures. Supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHs) are a fascinating byproduct of galaxy mergers in the hierarchical universe. In the last stage of their orbital evolution, gravitational wave radiation drives the binary inspiral and produces the loudest siren awaiting to be detected by gravitational wave observatories. Periodically varying emission from active galactic nuclei has been proposed as a powerful approach to probe such systems, although none of the identified candidates are close to their final coalescence such that the observed periods stay constant in time. In this work, we report on the first system with rapid decaying periods revealed by its optical and X-ray light curves, which has decreased from about one year to one month in three years. Together with its optical hydrogen line spectroscopy, we propose that the system is an uneven mass-ratio, highly eccentric SMBH binary which will merge within three years, as predicted by the trajectory evolution model. If the interpretation is true, coordinated, multi-band electromagnetic campaign should be planned for this first binary SMBH merger event observed in human history, together with possible neutrino measurements. Infrared echo has proven to be an effective means to discover transient accretion events of supermassive black holes (SMBHs), such as tidal disruption events (TDEs) and changing-look active galactic nuclei (AGNs), in dusty circumnuclear environments. To explore the dusty populations of SMBH transient events, we have constructed a large sample of Mid-infrared Outbursts in Nearby Galaxies (MIRONG) and performed multiwavelength observations. Here we present the results of multiepoch spectroscopic follow-up observations of a subsample of 54 objects spanning a time scale of 4 yr. Emission-line variability was detected in 22 of them with either emergence or enhancement of broad Balmer emission lines in comparison with pre-outburst spectra. Coronal lines, HeII{\lambda}4686 and Bowen line NIII{\lambda}4640 appeared in the spectra of nine,seven and two sources, respectively. These results suggest that MIRONG is a mixed bag of different transient sources. We have tentatively classified them into different subclass according to their spectral evolution and light curves. Two sources have been in a steady high broad H{\alpha} flux up to the latest observation and might be turn-on AGNs. Broad lines faded out in the remaining sources, indicating a transient ionizing source ignited by TDE or sporadic gas accretion. Thirty-one sources do not show noticeable spectral change with respect to their pre-outburst spectra. X-ray quasi-periodic eruptions (QPEs) are discovered recently in active galaxies with unknown driven mechanism. Under the assumption that QPEs are caused by star-disc collisions, we adopt full relativistic method and show that both the orbital parameters of the star and also the mass and spinning of the massive black hole (MBH) can be revealed by using the time of arrival (TOA) of the QPEs. By applying the model to the observed QPEs of GSN069, we find that the star is in a near-circular orbit ( $e_\bullet=0.05^{+0.02}_{-0.02}$) with semimajor axis of $\sim 365^{+54}_{-49}r_{\rm g}$ around a MBH with $M_\bullet=3.0^{+0.9}_{-0.6} \times10^5M_\odot$. The alternative short and long recurring time of the QPEs of GSN069 can be well explained by the small eccentricity and the orbital precession of the star. We find that the QPEs of GSN069 are possibly driven by a striped stellar core colliding with accretion disc after partial tidal disruption event around the MBH. For GSN069-like galaxies, if continuous X-ray monitoring of QPE events can be accumulated with uncertainties of TOA $\lesssim 100-150$s, the spin of massive black hole can be constrained by fitting to QPEs. The past decade has experienced an explosive increase of optically-discovered tidal disruption events (TDEs) with the advent of modern time-domain surveys. However, we still lack a comprehensive observational view of their infrared (IR) echoes in spite of individual detections. To this end, we have conducted a statistical study of IR variability of the 23 optical TDEs discovered between 2009 and 2018 utilizing the full public dataset of Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer. The detection of variability is performed on the difference images, yielding out 11 objects with significant (>$3\sigma$) variability in at least one band while dust emission can be only fitted in 8 objects. Their peak dust luminosity is around $10^{41}$-$10^{42}$ erg/s, corresponding to a dust covering factor $f_c\sim0.01$ at scale of sub-parsec. The only exception is the disputed source ASASSN-15lh, which shows an ultra-high dust luminosity ($\sim10^{43.5}$ erg/s) and make its nature even elusive. Other non-detected objects show even lower $f_c$, which could be one more order of magnitude lower. The derived $f_c$ is generally much smaller than those of dusty tori in active galactic nuclei (AGNs), suggesting either a dearth of dust or a geometrically thin and flat disk in the vicinity of SMBHs. Our results also indicate that the optical TDE sample (post-starburst galaxies overrepresented) is seriously biased to events with little dust at sub-pc scale while TDEs in dusty star-forming systems could be more efficiently unveiled by IR echoes., Comment: ApJ accepted, 5 figures, 3 tables

Optical transient surveys have led to the discovery of dozens of stellar tidal disruption events (TDEs) by massive black hole in the centers of galaxies. Despite extensive searches, X-ray follow-up observations have produced no or only weak X-ray detections in most of them. Here we report the discovery of delayed X-ray brightening around 140 days after the optical outburst in the TDE OGLE16aaa, followed by several flux dips during the decay phase. These properties are unusual for standard TDEs and could be explained by the presence of supermassive black hole binary or patchy obscuration. In either scenario, the X-rays can be produced promptly after the disruption but are blocked in the early phase, possibly by a radiation-dominated ejecta which leads to the bulk of optical and ultraviolet emission. The optical time-domain astronomy has grown rapidly in the past decade but the dynamic infrared sky is rarely explored. Aiming to construct a sample of mid-infrared outburst in nearby galaxies (MIRONG), we have conducted a systematical search of low-redshift ($z<0.35$) SDSS spectroscopic galaxies that have experienced recent MIR flares using their Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) light curves. A total of 137 galaxies have been selected by requiring a brightening amplitude of 0.5 magnitude in at least one WISE band with respect to their quiescent phases. Only a small faction (10.9%) has corresponding optical flares. Except for the four supernova (SNe) in our sample, the MIR luminosity of remaining sources ($L_{\rm 4.6\mu m}>10^{42}~\rm erg~s^{-1}$) are markedly brighter than known SNe and their physical locations are very close to the galactic center (median <0.1"). Only four galaxies are radio-loud indicating that synchrotron radiation from relativistic jets could contribute MIR variability. We propose that these MIR outburst are dominated by the dust echoes of transient accretion onto supermassive black holes, such as tidal disruption events (TDEs) and turn-on (changing-look) AGNs. Moreover, the inferred peak MIR luminosity function is generally consistent with the X-ray and optical TDEs at high end albeit with large uncertainties. Our results suggest that a large population of transients have been overlooked by optical surveys, probably due to dust obscuration or intrinsically optical weakness. Thus, a search in the infrared band is crucial for us to obtain a panoramic picture of nuclear outburst. Tidal disruption events (TDEs) occurred in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are a special class of sources with outstanding scientific significance. TDEs can generate ultrafast winds, which should almost inevitably collide with the preexisting AGN dusty tori. We perform analytical calculations and simulations on the wind-torus interactions and find such a process can generate considerable X-ray afterglow radiation several years or decades later after the TDE outburst. This provides a new origin for the years delayed X-rays in TDEs. The X-ray luminosity can reach 10^{41-42} erg/s, and the light curve characteristics depend on the parameters of winds and tori. We apply the model to two TDE candidates, and provide lower limits on the masses of the disrupted stars, as well as rigorous constraints on the gas densities of tori. Our results suggest that the observations of the time delay, spectral shape, luminosity and the light curve of the X-ray afterglow can be used to constrain the physical parameters of both TDE winds and tori, including the wind velocity, wind density and torus density., Comment: 13 pages, submitted to ApJ

We report the discovery of a mid-infrared (MIR) flare using WISE data in the center of the nearby Seyfert 1.9 galaxy MCG-02-04-026. The MIR flare began in the first half of 2014, peaked around the end of 2015, and faded in 2017. During these years, energy more than $7\times10^{50}$ erg was released in the infrared, and the flare's MIR color was generally turning red. We detected neither optical nor ultraviolet (UV) variation corresponding to the MIR flare based on available data. We explained the MIR flare using a dust echo model in which the radiative transfer is involved. The MIR flare can be well explained as thermal reradiation from dust heated by UV-optical photons of a primary nuclear transient event. Although the transient event was not seen directly due to dust obscuration, we can infer that it may produce a total energy of at least $\sim10^{51}$ erg, most of which was released in less than $\sim$3 years. The nature of the transient event could be a stellar tidal disruption event by the central supermassive black hole (SMBH), or a sudden enhancement of the existing accretion flow onto the SMBH, or a supernova which was particularly bright., Comment: 44 pages, 13 figures; Accepted to be published in ApJ

We report the discovery of a Tidal Disruption Event (TDE) candidate occurring in the Active Galactic Nucleus SDSS J022700.77-042020.6. A sudden increase in flux of J0227-0420 during the second half of 2009 is clearly shown in the long-term optical, UV, and NIR light curves. A plateau phase, following an initial decline, is seen in the NUV and optical u, g, r, i light curves. Moreover, we find possible evidence that the plateau phase in the NUV band may lag behind the optical ones by approximately 70-80 days with also a much shorter duration, i.e. $\sim$7-15 days against $\sim$40-50 days. The long-term NUV/optical (after the plateau phase), NIR and MIR light curves can be well characterized with a form of $L(t)\propto t^{-\beta}$, consistent with the expectation of a TDE. The plateaus can be explained if the stellar streams collide with the pre-existing AGN disk at different radii. Though the overall fallback rate decreases, the material in the outer disk gradually drifts inward and increases the local accretion rate at the inner region, producing the optical and UV plateaus. The possible lag between the optical and NUV plateaus can then be attributed to viscosity delay. The index $\beta$ of the NIR $J, H, K_s$ bands ($\sim1.4-3.3$) is steeper than that of the UV/optical ($\sim0.7-1.3$) and MIR bands ($\sim0.9-1.8$), which may suggest that a certain fraction of the dust in the inner region of the dusty torus may be sublimated during the TDE phase. Our results indicate that, due to collisions between stellar debris and pre-existing disk, the light curves of TDEs occurring in AGN may show distinctive features, which may shed new light on the accretion process., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, submitted to ApJ after minor revision

We analyze the X-ray, optical, and mid-infrared data of a "changing-look" Seyfert galaxy \sdssj15 at $z\simeq0.086$. Over a period of one decade (2009 - 2018), its broad H$\alpha$ line intensity increased by a factor of $\sim$4. Meanwhile, the X-ray emission in 2014 as observed by \chandra\ was about five times brighter than that in 2010 by {\it Suzaku}, and the corresponding emissions in V-band, mid-infrared W1 band brighten by $\sim$ 0.18, 0.32 mag, respectively. Moreover, the absorption in X-rays is moderate and stable, i.e. ${\rm N_{H}}\sim 10^{21} {\rm cm^{-2}}$, but the X-ray spectrum becomes harder in the 2014 \chandra\ bright state (i.e. photon index $\Gamma = 1.52^{+0.06}_{-0.06}$) than that of the 2010 \suzaku\ low state ($\Gamma=2.03^{+0.22}_{-0.21}$). With an Eddington ratio being lower than a few percent, the inner region of the accretion disk in \sdssj15\ is likely a hot accretion flow. We then compile from literature the X-ray data of "changing-look" AGNs, and find that they generally follow the well-established "V"-shaped correlation in AGNs, that is, above a critical turn-over luminosity the X-ray spectra soften with the increasing luminosity, and below that luminosity the trend is reversed in a way of "harder when brighter". This presents a direct evidence that CL-AGNs have distinctive changes in not only the optical spectral type, but also the X-ray spectral shape. The similarity in the X-ray spectral evolution between CL-AGNs and black hole X-ray binaries indicates that the observed CL-AGNs phenomena may relate to the state transition in accretion physics., Comment: Published in ApJL

Changing look active-galatic-nuclei (CL AGNs) can yield considerable insight into accretion physics as well as the co-evolution of black holes and their host galaxies. A large sample of these CL AGNs is essential to achieve the latter goal. We propose an effective method to select CL candidates from spectroscopic quasar catalogs using the mid-infrared (MIR) variability information derived from ALL-WISE/NEOWISE data releases. Our primary selection criteria include both a large amplitude flux variation and a transition of MIR color from an AGN to a normal galaxy. A pilot spectroscopic follow-up of 7 candidates among about 300 candidates selected from Sloan Digital Sky Survey low-redshift (z<0.5) AGN sample results in 6 new turn-off CL AGNs. We expect to obtain hundreds of CL AGNs once full spectroscopic follow-up of the sample is carried out., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

We present a detailed study of a transient in the center of SDSS1115+0544 based on the extensive UV, optical, mid-IR light curves (LC) and spectra over 1200 days. The host galaxy is a quiescent early type galaxy at $z$ = 0.0899 with a blackhole mass of $2\times10^7M_\odot$. The transient underwent a 2.5 magnitude brightening over $\sim120$ days, reaching a peak $V$-band luminosity (extinction corrected) of $-20.9$ magnitude, then fading 0.5 magnitude over 200 days, settling into a plateau of $>600$ days. Following the optical brightening are the significant mid-IR flares at $3.4$ and $4.5\mu$m, with a peak time delay of $\sim180$ days. The mid-IR LCs are explained as the echo of UV photons by a dust medium with a radius of $5\times10^{17}$ cm, consistent with $\rm E(B-V)$ of 0.58 inferred from the spectra. This event is very energetic with an extinction corrected $L_{bol} \sim 4\times10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Optical spectra over 400 days in the plateau phase revealed newly formed broad H$\alpha, \beta$ emission with a FWHM of $\sim3750$ km s$^{-1}$ and narrow coronal lines such as [Fe VII], [Ne V]. This flare also has a steeply rising UV continuum, detected by multi-epoch $Swift$ data at $+700$ to $+900$ days post optical peak. The broad Balmer lines and the UV continuum do not show significant temporal variations. The slow evolving LCs over 1200 days, the constant Balmer lines and UV continuum at late-times rule out TDE and SN IIn as the physical model for this event. We propose that this event is a `turn-on' AGN, transitioning from a quiescent state to a type 1 AGN with a sub-Eddington accretion rate of $0.017M_\odot$/yr. This change occurred on a very short time scale of $\sim 120- 200$ days. Tidal disruption events (TDEs) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) have been overlooked for a long time but tentatively been investigated recently. We report the discovery of a long-lasting luminous mid-infrared (mid-IR) flare in PS1-10adi, which is a newly-identified highly energetic transient event occurred in AGN. The IR luminosity of PS1-10adi, as well as other analogous events, are at least one order of magnitude higher than all known supernova, but can be well interpreted as the dust echoes of TDEs, whose ultra-high IR energy is reprocessed from the dusty torus around the black hole. The torus dust is sublimating during the early stage of the outburst and probably lead to the observed rapid emergence of Fe II lines. Moreover, the UV-optical rebrightening and contemporaneous X-ray onset after $\sim1500$ rest-frame days since the optical peak is also an intriguing feature of PS1-10adi, which could be attributed to the interaction between the high-velocity outflow and torus. We suggest that the luminous IR echo is a very typical phenomenon of TDEs in AGNs and may provide us an ideal opportunity to explore the torus properties., Comment: Accepted by ApJ, 1 table, 8 figures

We report the discovery of an active intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) candidate in the center of nearby barred bulgeless galaxy $\rm NGC~3319$. The point X-ray source revealed by archival Chandra and XMM-Newton observations is spatially coincident with the optical and UV galactic nuclei from Hubble Space Telescope observations. The spectral energy distribution derived from the unresolved X-ray and UV-optical flux is comparable with active galactic nuclei (AGNs) rather than ultra-luminous X-ray sources, although its bolometric luminosity is only $3.6\times10^{40}~\rm erg~s^{-1}$. Assuming an Eddington ratio range between 0.001 and 1, the black hole mass ($M_\rm{BH}$) will be located at $3\times10^2-3\times10^5~M_{\odot}$, placing it in the so-called IMBH regime and could be the one of the lowest reported so far. Estimates from other approaches (e.g., fundamental plane, X-ray variability) also suggest $M_\rm{BH}\lesssim10^5~M_{\odot}$.Similar to other BHs in bulgeless galaxies, the discovered IMBH resides in a nuclear star cluster with mass of $\sim6\times10^6~M_{\odot}$. The detection of such a low-mass BH offers us an ideal chance to study the formation and early growth of SMBH seeds, which may result from the bar-driven inflow in late-type galaxies with a prominent bar such as $\rm NGC~3319$., Comment: ApJ accepted, 2 tables, 6 figures

We report the discovery of a sample of 19 low redshift (z<0.22) spectroscopically non-Seyfert galaxies that show slow declining mid-infrared (MIR) light-curves (LCs), similar to those of tidal disruption event (TDE) candidates with extreme coronal lines. Two sources also showed a relatively fast rising MIR LCs. They consist of 61% sample of the WISE MIR variable non-Seyfert galaxies with SDSS spectra. In a comparison sample of optically selected Seyfert galaxies, the fraction of sources with such a LC is only 15%. After rejecting 5 plausible obscured Seyfert galaxies with red MIR colours, remaining 14 objects are studied in detail in this paper. We fit the declining part of LC with an exponential law, and the decay time is typically one year. The observed peak MIR luminosities ($\nu L_\nu$) after subtracting host galaxies are in the range of a few 10^42 to 10^44 erg~s^-1 with a median of 5x10^43 erg~s^-1 in the W2 band. The black hole masses distribute in a wide range with more than half in between 10^7 to 10^8 ~M_sun, but significantly different from that of optical/UV selected TDEs. Furthermore, MIR luminosities are correlated with black hole masses, the stellar mass or luminosity of their host bulges. Most galaxies in the sample are red and luminous with an absolute magnitude of r between -20 to -23. We estimate the rate of event about 10^-4 gal^-1~yr^-1 among luminous red galaxies. We discuss several possibilities for the variable infrared sources, and conclude that most likely, they are caused by short sporadic fueling to the supermassive black holes via either the instability of accretion flows or tidal disruption of stars., Comment: 32 pages, 12 figures. The rest-frame UV spectra of three recent tidal disruption events (TDEs), ASASSN-14li, PTF15af and iPTF16fnl display strong nitrogen emission lines but weak or undetectable carbon lines. In these three objects, the upper limits of the C III] $\lambda 1908$/N III] $\lambda 1750$ ratio are about two orders of magnitude lower than those of quasars, suggesting a high abundance ratio of [N/C]. With detailed photoionization simulations, we demonstrate that $C^{2+}$ and $N^{2+}$ are formed in the same zone, so the C III]/N III] ratio depends only moderately on the physical conditions in the gas and weakly on the shape of the ionizing continuum. There are smaller than $0.5$ dex variations in the line ratio over wide ranges of gas densities and ionization parameters at a given metallicity. This allows a robust estimate of the relative abundance ratio nitrogen to carbon. We derive a relative abundance ratio of [N/C]$>1.5$ for ASASSN-14li, and even higher for PTF15af and iPTF16fnl. This suggests that the broad line region in those TDE sources is made of nitrogen-enhanced core material that falls back at later times. Based on stellar evolution models, the lower limit of the disrupted star should be larger than 0.6M$_{\odot}$. The chemical abundance of the line emitting gas gives a convincing evidence that the flares origin from stellar tidal disruptions. The coincidence of the weakness of the X-ray emission with the strong broad absorption lines in PTF15af, iPTF16fnl and the strong X-ray emission without such lines in ASASSN-li14 are in analogy to quasars with and without broad absorption lines., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

PS16dtm was classified as a candidate tidal disruption event (TDE) in a dwarf Seyfert 1 galaxy with low-mass black hole ($\sim10^6M\odot$) and has presented various intriguing photometric and spectra characteristics. Using the archival WISE and the newly released NEOWISE data, we found PS16dtm is experiencing a mid-infrared (MIR) flare which started $\sim11$ days before the first optical detection. Interpreting the MIR flare as a dust echo requires close pre-existing dust with a high covering factor, and suggests the optical flare may have brightened slowly for some time before it became bright detectable from the ground. More evidence is given at the later epochs. At the peak of the optical light curve, the new inner radius of the dust torus has grown to much larger size, a factor of 7 of the initial radius due to strong radiation field. At $\sim150$ days after the first optical detection, the dust temperature has dropped well below the sublimation temperature. Other peculiar spectral features shown by PS16dtm are the transient, prominent FeII emission lines and outflows indicated by broad absorption lines detected during the optical flare. Our model explains the enhanced FeII emission from iron newly released from the evaporated dust. It is known that some active galactic nuclei (AGNs) transited from type 1 to type 2 or vice versa. There are two explanations for the so-called changing look AGNs: one is the dramatic change of the obscuration along the line-of-sight, the other is the variation of accretion rate. In this paper, we report the detection of large amplitude variations in the mid-infrared luminosity during the transitions in 10 changing look AGNs using WISE and newly released NEOWISE-R data. The mid-infrared light curves of 10 objects echoes the variability in the optical band with a time lag expected for dust reprocessing. A brief Chandra observation of the ultraluminous quasar, SDSS J010013.02+280225.8 at redshift 6.326, showed it to be a relatively bright, soft X-ray source with a count rate of about 1 ct/ks. In this paper we present results for the quasar from a 65ks XMM-Newton observation, which well constrains its spectral shape. The quasar is clearly detected with a total of $\sim$ 460 net counts in the 0.2-10 keV band. The spectrum is characterised by a simple power-law model with photon index of $\Gamma = 2.30^{+0.10}_{-0.10}$, and the intrinsic 2-10 keV luminosity is $3.14\times10^{45}$ erg $\text{s}^{-1}$. The 1 $\sigma$ upper limit to any intrinsic absorption column density is $N_{H} = 6.07\times 10^{22} {\text{cm}}^{-2}$. No significant iron emission lines were detected. We derive the X-ray-to-optical flux ratio $\alpha_{\text{ox}}$ of $-1.74\pm$0.01, consistent with the values found in other quasars of comparable ultraviolet luminosity. We did not detect significant flux variations either in the XMM-Newton exposure or between XMM-Newton and XMM-Newton observations, which are separated by $\sim$ 8 months. We present the mid-infrared (MIR) light curves (LCs) of a tidal disruption event (TDE) candidate in the center of a nearby ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) F01004-2237 using archival {\it WISE} and {\it NEOWISE} data from 2010 to 2016. At the peak of the optical flare, F01004-2237 was IR quiescent. About three years later, its MIR fluxes have shown a steady increase, rising by 1.34 and 1.04 mag in $3.4$ and $4.6\mu$m up to the end of 2016. The host-subtracted MIR peak luminosity is $2-3\times10^{44}$\,erg\,s$^{-1}$. We interpret the MIR LCs as an infrared echo, i.e. dust reprocessed emission of the optical flare. Fitting the MIR LCs using our dust model, we infer a dust torus of the size of a few parsecs at some inclined angle. The derived dust temperatures range from $590-850$\,K, and the warm dust mass is $\sim7\,M_{\odot}$. Such a large mass implies that the dust cannot be newly formed. We also derive the UV luminosity of $4-11\times10^{44}$\,erg\,s$^{-1}$. The inferred total IR energy is $1-2\times10^{52}$\,erg, suggesting a large dust covering factor. Finally, our dust model suggests that the long tail of the optical flare could be due to dust scattering.

We present a statistical analysis of the variability of broad absorption lines (BALs) in quasars using the large multi-epoch spectroscopic dataset of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 12 (SDSS DR12). We divide the sample into two groups according to the pattern of the variation of C iv BAL with respect to that of continuum: the equivalent widths (EW) of the BAL decreases (increases) when the continuum brightens (dims) as group T1; and the variation of EW and continuum in the opposite relation as group T2. We find that T2 has significantly (P_T<10-6 , Students T Test) higher EW ratios (R) of Si iv to C iv BAL than T1. Our result agrees with the prediction of photoionization models that C +3 column density increases (decreases) if there is a (or no) C +3 ionization front while R decreases with the incident continuum. We show that BAL variabilities in at least 80% quasars are driven by the variation of ionizing continuum while other models that predict uncorrelated BAL and continuum variability contribute less than 20%. Considering large uncertainty in the continuum flux calibration, the latter fraction may be much smaller. When the sample is binned into different time interval between the two observations, we find significant difference in the distribution of R between T1 and T2 in all time-bins down to a deltaT < 6 days, suggesting that BAL outflow in a fraction of quasars has a recombination time scale of only a few days., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJS

We report exploratory \chandra\ observation of the ultraluminous quasar SDSS J010013.02+280225.8 at redshift 6.30. The quasar is clearly detected by \chandra\ with a possible component of extended emission. The rest-frame 2-10 keV luminosity is 9.0$^{+9.1}_{-4.5}$ $\times$ 10$^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$ with inferred photon index of $\Gamma$ = 3.03$^{+0.78}_{-0.70}$. This quasar is X-ray bright, with inferred X-ray-to-optical flux ratio \aox\ $=-1.22^{+0.07}_{-0.05}$, higher than the values found in other quasars of comparable ultraviolet luminosity. The properties inferred from this exploratory observation indicate that this ultraluminous quasar might be growing with super-Eddington accretion and probably viewed with small inclination angle. Deep X-ray observation will help to probe the plausible extended emission and better constraint the spectral features for this ultraluminous quasar., Comment: to be published in ApJL

The sporadic accretion following the tidal disruption of a star by a super-massive black hole (TDE) leads to a bright UV and soft X-ray flare in the galactic nucleus. The gas and dust surrounding the black hole responses to such a flare with an echo in emission lines and infrared emission. In this paper, we report the detection of long fading mid-IR emission lasting up to 14 years after the flare in four TDE candidates with transient coronal lines using the WISE public data release. We estimate that the reprocessed mid-IR luminosities are in the range between $4\times 10^{42}$ and $2\times 10^{43}$ erg~s$^{-1}$ and dust temperature in the range of 570-800K when WISE first detected these sources three to five years after the flare. Both luminosity and dust temperature decreases with time. We interpret the mid-IR emission as the infrared echo of the tidal disruption flare. We estimate the UV luminosity at the peak flare to be 1 to 30 times $10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and for warm dust masses to be in the range of 0.05-1.3 Msun within a few parsecs. Our results suggest that the mid-infrared echo is a general signature of TDE in the gas-rich environment.

We report the detection of a significant infrared variability of the nearest tidal disruption event (TDE) ASASSN-14li using Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer} and newly released Near-Earth Object WISE Reactivation} data. In comparison with the quiescent state, the infrared flux is brightened by 0.12 and 0.16 magnitude in the W1 ($3.4\mu$m) and W2 ($4.6\mu$m) bands at 36 days after the optical discovery (or $\sim110$ days after the peak disruption date). The flux excess is still detectable $\sim170$ more days later. Assuming that the flare-like infrared emission is from the dust around the black hole, its blackbody temperature is estimated to be $\sim2.1\times10^3$~K, slightly higher than the dust sublimation temperature, indicating that the dust is likely located close to the dust sublimation radius. The equilibrium between the heating and radiation of the dust claims a bolometric luminosity of $\sim10^{43}-10^{45}$~\lum, comparable with the observed peak luminosity. We present an analysis of spectrum and variability of the bright reddened narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxy Was~61 using 90 ks archival {\it XMM-Newton} data. The X-ray spectrum in 0.2-10 keV can be characterized by an absorbed power-law plus soft excess and an Fe K$\alpha$ emission line. The power-law spectral index remains constant during the flux variation. The absorbing material is mildly ionized, with a column density of 3.2$\times$10$^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$, and does not appear to vary during the period of the X-ray observation. If the same material causes the optical reddening (E(B-V)$\simeq$0.6 mag), it must be located outside the narrow line region with a dust-to-gas ratio similar to the average Galactic value. We detect significant variations of the Fe K$\alpha$ line during the observational period. A broad Fe K$\alpha$ line at $\simeq$6.7 keV with a width of $\sim$0.6 keV is detected in the low flux segment of the first 40 ks exposure, and is absent in the spectra of other segments; a narrow Fe K$\alpha$ emission line $\sim$6.4 keV with a width of $\sim$0.1 keV is observed in the subsequent 20 ks segment, which has a count rate of 35% higher and is in the next day. We believe this is due to the change in geometry and kinematics of the X-ray emitting corona. The temperature and flux of soft X-ray excess appear to correlate with the flux of the hard power-law component. Comptonization of disc photons by a warm and optically thick inner disk is preferred to interpret the soft excess, rather than the ionized reflection.

We present a new short-period brown dwarf candidate around the star TYC 1240-00945-1. This candidate was discovered in the first year of the Multi-object APO Radial Velocity Exoplanets Large-area Survey (MARVELS), which is part of the third phase of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-III), and we designate the brown dwarf as MARVELS-1b. MARVELS uses the technique of dispersed fixed-delay interferometery to simultaneously obtain radial velocity measurements for 60 objects per field using a single, custom-built instrument that is fiber fed from the SDSS 2.5-m telescope. From our 20 radial velocity measurements spread over a ~370 d time baseline, we derive a Keplerian orbital fit with semi-amplitude K=2.533+/-0.025 km/s, period P=5.8953+/-0.0004 d, and eccentricity consistent with circular. Independent follow-up radial velocity data confirm the orbit. Adopting a mass of 1.37+/-0.11 M_Sun for the slightly evolved F9 host star, we infer that the companion has a minimum mass of 28.0+/-1.5 M_Jup, a semimajor axis 0.071+/-0.002 AU assuming an edge-on orbit, and is probably tidally synchronized. We find no evidence for coherent instrinsic variability of the host star at the period of the companion at levels greater than a few millimagnitudes. The companion has an a priori transit probability of ~14%. Although we find no evidence for transits, we cannot definitively rule them out for companion radii ~<1 R_Jup., Comment: 47 pages, 11 figures. Accepted for publication in ApJ

This proceedings contribution summarizes first results obtained from a systematic study of 2011 NLS1 galaxies, as presented in Zhou et al. (2006, ApJS 166, 128). The sample was compiled by examining the spectral parameters of galaxies and QSOs derived from SDSS DR3 data. We discuss some preliminary results on the statistic properties of the sample, such as the fraction of NLS1, the properties of broad and narrow emission lines, and emission in other wavebands. The black hole mass--velocity dispersion relation for NLS1s was re-examined using the velocity dispersion values estimated from the stellar absorption spectra of the host galaxies. We report the discovery of a dwarf Seyfert 1 active galactic nucleus (AGN) with a candidate intermediate-mass black hole hosted by the dwarf galaxy SDSS J160531.84+174826.1 at z=0.032. A broad component of the H-alpha line with FWHM=781 km/s is detected in its optical spectrum, and a bright, point-like nucleus is evident from a HST imaging observation. Non-thermal X-ray emission is also detected from the nucleus. The black hole mass, as estimated from the luminosity and width of the broad H-alpha component, is about 7x10^4 \msun. The host galaxy appears to be a disk galaxy with a boxy bulge or nuclear bar; with an absolute magnitude of M_R = -17.8 (M_B = -16.4), it is among the least luminous host galaxies ever identified for a Seyfert 1., Comment: revised version accepted by ApJ
