Abstract

Acne may develop in patients who are receiving immunosuppressive drugs such as cyclosporine and prednisolone, and this is of special concern to kidney recipients, who are vulnerable to infection. Isotretinoin, a compound for treating acne, may assist transplant rejection, so it is given cautiously to such patients. The case history of a heart transplant patient with acne is discussed. Surgeons were doubtful about performing the surgery on the 21-year-old patient, since a previous transplant patient had died of infection resulting from acne. In the present case, a full course of isotretinoin, in combination with cyclosporine and other drugs, was prescribed after transplantation. Heart function was satisfactory and there were no complications from acne. It appears that isotretinoin may be useful in managing some posttransplant patients.
