The Lectric Leopard manufactured by U.S. Electricar Corporation was tested at MERADCOM as part of the Department of Energy project to verify conformity to performance standards of electric vehicles. The Leopard is a standard Fiat Strada sedan which has been converted to an electric vehicle. It is powered by 16 6-V batteries through a silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR) Controller to a 23-hp series-wound d.c. motor. It is equipped with a five-speed manual transmission, power-assisted disc brakes in the front and drum brakes in the rear. It is not equipped with regenerative braking. (Author)

The South Coast Technology R-1 Electric is a standard VW Rabbit that has been converted to an electric Vehicle. The SCT R-1 Electric was tested by the US Army Mobility Equipment Research and Development Command as part of a Department of Energy project to characterize the state-of-the-art and to verify Manaufacturer certification of the electric vehicle. The R-1 Electric performance test results are presented in this report. The SCT R-1 Electric is powered by 18 lead-acid batteries, has a separately excited moter, transistorized field chopper controller, regenerative braking, and a 4-speed manual transmission.

The Jet Industries Electra Van 600 is a Subaru Van which has been converted to an electric vehicle. It was tested by MERADCOM as part of a Department of Energy project to verify conformity to performance standards of electric vehicles. The Electra Van 600 test results are presented in this report. The 600 Van is powered by 17 6-volt lead-acid batteries through an SCR Controller to a series-wound 20-hp d.c. motor. It has torsion bar suspension with hydraulic shocks and is equipped with drum-type hydraulic brakes front and rear. It does not have regenerative braking. (Author)

The GE-100 Centennial electric vehicle is a one-of-a-kind prototype. Results of performance tests, speed, acceleration, gradeability, range, and efficiencies are presented. The GE-100 is powered by eighteen 6-volt lead-acid batteries driving a 16.3-kW d.c. series motor through an EV-1C controller. The motor drives the wheels through a chain drive to the differential. The Electra-Van 1000P is a Chrysler Corp. pickup truck which has been converted to an electric vehicle. It was tested as part of a Department of Energy demonstration program. The Electra-Van 1000P performance test results are presented. The 1000P is powered by 24 6-volt lead acid batteries through an SCR Controller to a 37-hp electric motor. It has a manual 4-speed transmission and front disc and rear drum brakes. It does not have regenerative braking.

The 'Lectric Leopard' is a Renault Le Car that has been converted to an electric vehicle. It was tested as part of a Department of Energy demonstration program. The performance test results are presented in this report. The vehicle is powered by 16 6-volt lead acid batteries through a contactor to the 48-volt 12-horsepower traction motor. It is equipped with front disc brakes, drum rear, and torsion bar suspension. It does not have regenerative braking.

The Electra Van Model 1000, an electric half-ton multipurpose van, was tested at MERADCOM as part of a Department of Energy project to characterize the state-of-the-art of electric vehicles. The Electra Van is manufactured in Austin, Texas by Jet Industries, Inc. It is powered by 24, 6-volt batteries that are connected to the motor through an SCR controller actuated by a foot pedal to control motor speed. The Battronic Mini Van is manufactured in Boyertown, Pennsylvania, by Battronic, Inc. It is powered by two 56-volt lead-acid batteries that are connected to the motor through an SCR control actuated by a foot pedal to control motor speed. The 42-horsepower motor drives the rear wheels through a direct drive to the differential. Regenerative braking is provided. (Author)

The Citi-Van is manufactured in Sebring, Florida, by Sebring Vanguard, Inc. It is powered by eight 6-volt batteries that are connected to the motor through a contactor control actuated by a foot pedal to control motor speed. The Daihatsu EH-S40 Van, an electric quarter-ton delivery truck, was tested at the U.S. Army Aberdeen Proving Ground test facilities in Aberdeen, Maryland, as part of a Department of Energy (DOE) project to characterize the state-of-the-art of electric vehicles. The EH-S40 Van performance test results are presented in this report. The EH-S40 Van is manufactured in Osaka, Japan, by Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd. The van is powered by eight 12-volt batteries that are connected to the motor through an arrangement of contactors operated from a foot pedal. The motor is a compound type with a transistor shunt field control. The motor is connected via a clutch to a four-speed manual transmission. No regenerative braking was provided. The EVA Metro is a four-passenger Renault 12 Sedan that has been converted to an electric vehicle. It was tested as part of a Department of Energy (DOE) project to characterize the state-of-the-art of electric vehicles. The EVA Metro Sedan vehicle performance test results are presented in this report. The EVA Metro is powered by sixteen, 6-volt traction batteries through a silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR) controller actuated by a foot throttle to change the voltage applied to a 10-kW motor. The braking system is a power-assist, hydraulic braking system with front-wheel disk and rear drum. Regenerative braking is not provided.

Several embodiments for determining the state of charge of a cell or battery are disclosed. In accordance with one method of this invention, an A.C. voltage is applied to a cell or battery through a shunt. The phase angle between the A.C. voltage across the battery terminals and the A.C. current through the battery (measured as a shunt voltage) is continuously monitored. This phase angle is converted to an analog voltage which represents the A.C. component that is phase shifted by the impedance of the battery., Supersedes PAT-APPL-556 526-75.

The EVA Current Fare Station Wagon, an electric vehicle, was tested at MERADCOM as part of a Department of Energy project to characterize the state-of-the-art of electric vehicles. The current Fare Wagon was manufactured in Cleveland, Ohio by Electric Vehicle Associates' Incorporated. It was tested by MERADCOM at Fort Belvoir, Virginia as part of a Department of Energy project to verify conformity to performance standards of electric vehicles. The verification test results are presented in this report. The Volta Pickup is powered by 24 6-V lead-acid batteries, has a 38 hp series wound d.c. motor, SCR chopper controller, regenerative braking, and a 2-speed Helical gear transmission. (Author)

It is standard Datsun 310 which has been converted to an electric vehicle. It is powered by 18 6-V batteries through an SCR controller, by Cableform, to a 22-hp, series-wound d.c. motor. It is equipped with a four-speed manual transmission, front disc brakes with drum in the rear. It is not equipped with regenerative braking.

The Electrek 2+2 by Unique Mobility, Inc. is a custom-designed vehicle with a molded fiberglass and polycarbonate body. It was tested by the U.S. Army Mobility Equipment Research and Development Command (MERADCOM) at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, as part of the Department of Energy (DOE) project to characterize the state-of-the-art of electric vehicles. The vehicle is powered by 16 6-volt lead-acid batteries through a transistorized controller to a 32-hp modified shunt wound electric motor. It has 4-speed manual transmission and disc brakes in front with drum in the rear and is equipped with regenerative deceleration. (Author)

The report describes a facility consisting mainly of a controller for charging and discharging electrical power sources. The facility also includes a data storage system and data reduction equipment. The controller has five modes of operation: Constant current and constant voltage charge, constant power and constant current discharge, and an open-circuit voltage period. Each mode has certain preset end points. A comparator monitors cell voltage continuously and can override the end points, causing a printout of ampere-hours, watt-hours, or time. All modes of operation and end points can be set up by diode pins in program boards, and the constant power, voltage, or current level is programmed by a clip-card reader. Twenty-five different modes and sixteen different levels can be preprogrammed in any sequence.
