Abstract

Marine Non-Indigenous Species (NIS)are animals and plants introduced accidently or deliberately into the European seas, originating from other seas of the globe. About 800 marine non-indigenous species (NIS)currently occurin the European Union national marine waters, several of which have negative impacts on marine ecosystem services and biodiversity. Under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) Descriptor 2 (D2), EU Member States(MSs)need toconsider NIS in their marine management strategies. The Descriptor D2 includes one primary criterion (D2C1: new NIS introductions),and two secondary criteria (D2C2and D2C3). The D2 implementation is characterized by a number of issues and uncertaintieswhich can beapplicable to the Descriptor level (e.g. geographical unit of assessment, assessment period, phytoplanktonic, parasitic, oligohaline NIS, etc.), to the primary criterion D2C1 level (e.g. threshold values, cryptogenic, questionable species, etc), and to the secondary criteria D2C2 and D2C3. The current report tackles these issues and provides practical recommendations aiming at a smoother and more efficient implementation of D2 and its criteria at EU level. They constitute a solid operational output whichcan result in more comparable D2 assessments among MSsand MSFD regions/subregions. When it comes to the policy-side, the current report callsfor a number of different categories of NIS to be reported in D2 assessments, pointing the need for the species to be labelled/categorised appropriately in the MSFD reporting by the MSs.These suggestions are proposed to be communicated to the MSFD WorkingGroup of Good Environmental Status (GES)and subsequently to the Marine Strategy Coordination Group (MSCG) of MSFD. Moreover, they can serve as an input for revising the Art. 8 Guidelines.

Abstract

This Collective Article presents information on 17 taxa belonging to five (5) Phyla and extending from the Alboran Sea to the Levantine Sea. These new records were found in six (6) different ecoregions as follows: Alboran Sea: Second and easternmost record of the sponge Chalinula nigra in the Mediterranean Sea; Western Mediterranean: first record of the rare gobid Gobius couchi for Spain, based on both morphological and molecular data; new records for the rare ascidian Ciona edwardsi from the Marine Protected Area of Tavolara, Sardinia; several records for four (4) different species of black coral, Antipathella subpinnata, Antipathes dichotoma, Leiopathes glaberrima and Parantipathes larix from the Aeolian Archipelago, all of which are currently threatened and/or protected at a Mediterranean level; the first documented records of the sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus in Calabria, which is considered “Critically Endangered” in Italy; first record in the Tyrrhenian Sea and second record in the Ionian Sea for the crab Ocypode cursor, which seems to be rapidly expanding its distribution range across Italian waters; Adriatic Sea: Additional records of yellowmouth barracuda, Sphyraena viridensis, in the northern Adriatic, which seems to be experimenting a meridionalization process in the region; Aegean Sea: First confirmed record of the iconic gastropod Bursa scrobilator scrobilator in the eastern Mediterranean Sea; an additional record for the vulnerable shark Dalatias licha, also being the largest individual caught in eastern Mediterranean waters till the time of capture; an additional record for the rare crab Distolambrus maltzami, sug gesting the species might be more morphologically variable than originally thought; first documented record for the myctophid Hygophum hygomii in both Turkish waters and the north Aegean Sea; additional records for the tuna Katsuwonus pelamis and the sunfish Ranzania laevis in the eastern Mediterranean, pointing out that both species might

Abstract

The presence of Echinolittorina punctata in the Adriatic Sea has been confirmed for the first time. In total, six specimens of this species were found near the city of Split. This species is considered as a tropicalization indicator in the Mediterranean Sea. The status of this species in the Adriatic Sea should be evaluated through future research.

Abstract

The occurrence of an early life stage of the king of herrings, Regalecus glesne Ascanius, 1772, is reported for the first time from the Adriatic waters. A single larva (SL = 103.4 mm) was found alive in the waters of open Adriatic near a remote Island Palagruža. Findings of early life stages of this species are very rare in the Mediterranean and have previously been reported only from the waters of the Strait of Sicily and Elba Island. One specimen of the dusky spinefoot, Siganus luridus (Rüppell, 1829) (?, total length = 17.3 cm, total weight = 87.61 g), a lessepsian migrant, was captured in the Mljet Channel (Southern Adriatic, Croatian coast) on 15 November 2010. This is the second record of this species from the Adriatic, but first well documented and based on the captured specimen. Abstract

The anatomical structures of the sound-producing organ in Ophidion rochei males present an important panel of highly derived characters: three pairs of putatively slow sonic muscles; a neural arch that pivots; a rocker bone at the front pole of the swimbladder; a stretchable swimbladder fenestra; a swimbladder plate; and an internal cone that terminates in a pair of membranes in the caudal swimbladder. Male courtship calls are produced nocturnally and consist of trains of 10 to 40 pulses that increase in amplitude and decrease in rate before exhibiting alternating periods of ca. 84 and 111 ms. Each pulse includes an unusual waveform with two parts. Pulse part 1 is a single cycle followed by a longer duration pulse part that exhibits gradual damping. Sounds and morphology suggest two hypotheses on the sound-producing mechanism. The 'pulley' hypothesis would require an alternate contraction of the ventral and dorsal muscles to form the two parts of each pulse. The 'bow' hypothesis involves a release mechanism with the sustained contraction of the dorsal muscle during all of the call, and the rapid contraction/relaxation of the ventral muscle to form each pulse.
