The results of simulations of magnetic reconnection accompanied by electron and proton heating and energization in a macroscale system are presented. Both species form extended powerlaw distributions that extend nearly three decades in energy. The primary drive mechanism for the production of these nonthermal particles is Fermi reflection within evolving and coalescing magnetic flux ropes. While the powerlaw indices of the two species are comparable, the protons overall gain more energy than electrons and their power law extends to higher energy. The power laws roll into a hot thermal distribution at low energy with the transition energy occurring at lower energy for electrons compared with protons. A strong guide field diminishes the production of non-thermal particles by reducing the Fermi drive mechanism. In solar flares, proton power laws should extend down to 10's of keV, far below the energies that can be directly probed via gamma-ray emission. We report a rare regime of Earth's magnetosphere interaction with sub-Alfv\'enic solar wind in which the windsock-like magnetosphere transforms into one with Alfv\'en wings. In the magnetic cloud of a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) on April 24, 2023, NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale mission distinguishes the following features: (1) unshocked and accelerated cold CME plasma coming directly against Earth's dayside magnetosphere; (2) dynamical wing filaments representing new channels of magnetic connection between the magnetosphere and foot points of the Sun's erupted flux rope; (3) cold CME ions observed with energized counter-streaming electrons, evidence of CME plasma captured due to reconnection between magnetic-cloud and Alfv\'en-wing field lines. The reported measurements advance our knowledge of CME interaction with planetary magnetospheres, and open new opportunities to understand how sub-Alfv\'enic plasma flows impact astrophysical bodies such as Mercury, moons of Jupiter, and exoplanets close to their host stars., Comment: 14 pages, including 4 figures, Under review in Geophys. Miniature magnetic tools have the potential to enable minimally invasive surgical techniques to be applied to space-restricted surgical procedures in areas such as neurosurgery. However, typical magnetic navigation systems, which create the magnetic fields to drive such tools, either cannot generate large enough fields, or surround the patient in a way that obstructs surgeon access to the patient. This paper introduces the design of a magnetic navigation system with eight electromagnets arranged completely under the operating table, to endow the system with maximal workspace accessibility, which allows the patient to lie down on the top surface of the system without any constraints. The found optimal geometric layout of the electromagnets maximizes the field strength and uniformity over a reasonable neurosurgical operating volume. The system can generate non-uniform magnetic fields up to 38 mT along the x and y axes and 47 mT along the z axis at a working distance of 120 mm away from the actuation system workbench, deep enough to deploy magnetic microsurgical tools in the brain. The forces which can be exerted on millimeter-scale magnets used in prototype neurosurgical tools are validated experimentally. Due to its large workspace, this system could be used to control milli-robots in a variety of surgical applications.

We conduct two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations to investigate the scattering of electron heat flux by self-generated oblique electromagnetic waves. The heat flux is modeled as a bi-kappa distribution with a T_parallel > T_perp temperature anisotropy maintained by continuous injection at the boundaries. The anisotropic distribution excites oblique whistler waves and filamentary-like Weibel instabilities. Electron velocity distributions taken after the system has reached a steady state show that these in stabilities inhibit the heat flux and drive the total distributions towards isotropy. Electron trajectories in velocity space show a circular-like diffusion along constant energy surfaces in the wave frame. The key parameter controlling the scattering rate is the average speed, or drift speed vd, of the heat flux compared with the electron Alfven speed vAe, with higher drift speeds producing stronger fluctua tions and a more significant reduction of the heat flux. Reducing the density of the electrons carrying the heat flux by 50% does not significantly affect the scattering rate. A scaling law for the electron scattering rate versus vd/vAe is deduced from the simulations. The implications of these results for understanding energetic electron transport during solar flare energy release are discussed.

Particles are accelerated to very high, non-thermal energies during explosive energy-release phenomena in space, solar, and astrophysical plasma environments. While it has been established that magnetic reconnection plays an important role in the dynamics of Earth's magnetosphere, it remains unclear how magnetic reconnection can further explain particle acceleration to non-thermal energies. Here we review recent progress in our understanding of particle acceleration by magnetic reconnection in Earth's magnetosphere. With improved resolutions, recent spacecraft missions have enabled detailed studies of particle acceleration at various structures such as the diffusion region, separatrix, jets, magnetic islands (flux ropes), and dipolarization front. With the guiding-center approximation of particle motion, many studies have discussed the relative importance of the parallel electric field as well as the Fermi and betatron effects. However, in order to fully understand the particle acceleration mechanism and further compare with particle acceleration in solar and astrophysical plasma environments, there is a need for further investigation of, for example, energy partition and the precise role of turbulence., Comment: Submitted to Space Science Reviews; Revised on July 21, 2023

FOXSI is a direct-imaging, hard X-ray (HXR) telescope optimized for solar flare observations. It detects hot plasma and energetic electrons in and near energy release sites in the solar corona via bremsstrahlung emission, measuring both spatial structure and particle energy distributions. It provides two orders of magnitude faster imaging spectroscopy than previously available, probing physically relevant timescales (<1s) never before accessible to address fundamental questions of energy release and efficient particle acceleration that have importance far beyond their solar application (e.g., planetary magnetospheres, flaring stars, accretion disks). FOXSI measures not only the bright chromospheric X-ray emission where electrons lose most of their energy, but also simultaneous emission from electrons as they are accelerated in the corona and propagate along magnetic field lines. It is essential that there be coordinated and co-optimized observations in X-rays, gamma-rays, and EUV during the peak of solar cycle 26 (~2036) to significantly advance our understanding of impulsive energy release in the corona. The open questions include: What are the physical origins of space-weather events? How are particles accelerated at the Sun? How is impulsively released energy transported throughout the solar atmosphere? How is the solar corona heated? Many of the processes involved in triggering, driving, and sustaining solar eruptive events -- including magnetic reconnection, particle acceleration, plasma heating, and energy transport in magnetized plasmas -- also play important roles in phenomena throughout the Universe. Understanding the nature of energetic particles in the solar atmosphere is one of the most important outstanding problems in heliophysics. Flare-accelerated particles compose a huge fraction of the flare energy budget; they have large influences on how events develop; they are an important source of high-energy particles found in the heliosphere; and they are the single most important corollary to other areas of high-energy astrophysics. Despite the importance of this area of study, this topic has in the past decade received only a small fraction of the resources necessary for a full investigation. For example, NASA has selected no new Explorer-class instrument in the past two decades that is capable of examining this topic. The advances that are currently being made in understanding flare-accelerated electrons are largely undertaken with data from EOVSA (NSF), STIX (ESA), and NuSTAR (NASA Astrophysics). This is despite the inclusion in the previous Heliophysics decadal survey of the FOXSI concept as part of the SEE2020 mission, and also despite NASA's having invested heavily in readying the technology for such an instrument via four flights of the FOXSI sounding rocket experiment. Due to that investment, the instrumentation stands ready to implement a hard X-ray mission to investigate flare-accelerated electrons. Particles are accelerated to very high, non-thermal energies during explosive energy-release phenomena in space, solar, and astrophysical plasma environments. In the case of solar flares, it has been established that magnetic reconnection plays an important role for releasing the magnetic energy, but it remains unclear if or how magnetic reconnection can further explain particle acceleration during flares. Here we argue that the key issue is the lack of understanding of the precise context of particle acceleration but it can be overcome, in the near future, by performing imaging-spectroscopy in soft X-rays (SXRs). Such observations should be complemented by observations in other wavelengths such as extreme-ultraviolets (EUVs), microwaves, hard X-rays (HXRs), and gamma-rays. Also, numerical simulations will be crucial for further narrowing down the particle acceleration mechanism in the context revealed by the observations. Solar flares and the often associated solar eruptive events serve as an outstanding laboratory to study the magnetic reconnection and the associated energy release and conversion processes under plasma conditions difficult to reproduce in the laboratory, and with considerable spatiotemporal details not possible elsewhere in the universe. In the past decade, thanks to advances in multi-wavelength imaging spectroscopy, as well as developments in theories and numerical modeling, significant progress has been made in improving our understanding of solar flare/eruption energy release. In particular, broadband imaging spectroscopy at microwave wavelengths offered by the Expanded Owens Valley Solar Array (EOVSA) has enabled the revolutionary capability of measuring the time-evolving coronal magnetic fields at or near the flare reconnection region. However, owing to EOVSA's limited dynamic range, imaging fidelity, and angular resolution, such measurements can only be done in a region around the brightest source(s) where the signal-to-noise is sufficiently large. In this white paper, after a brief introduction to the outstanding questions and challenges pertinent to magnetic energy release in solar flares and eruptions, we will demonstrate how a next-generation radio facility with many (~100-200) antenna elements can bring the next revolution by enabling high dynamic range, high fidelity broadband imaging spectropolarimetry along with a sub-second time resolution and arcsecond-level angular resolution. We recommend to prioritize the implementation of such a ground-based instrument within this decade. The Frequency Agile Solar Radiotelescope (FASR) has been strongly endorsed as a top community priority by both Astronomy & Astrophysics Decadal Surveys and Solar & Space Physics Decadal Surveys in the past two decades. Although it was developed to a high state of readiness in previous years (it went through a CATE analysis and was declared ``doable now"), the NSF has not had the funding mechanisms in place to fund this mid-scale program. Now it does, and the community must seize this opportunity to modernize the FASR design and build the instrument in this decade. The concept and its science potential have been abundantly proven by the pathfinding Expanded Owens Valley Solar Array (EOVSA), which has demonstrated a small subset of FASR's key capabilities such as dynamically measuring the evolving magnetic field in eruptive flares, the temporal and spatial evolution of the electron energy distribution in flares, and the extensive coupling among dynamic components (flare, flux rope, current sheet). The FASR concept, which is orders of magnitude more powerful than EOVSA, is low-risk and extremely high reward, exploiting a fundamentally new research domain in solar and space weather physics. Utilizing dynamic broadband imaging spectropolarimetry at radio wavelengths, with its unique sensitivity to coronal magnetic fields and to both thermal plasma and nonthermal electrons from large flares to extremely weak transients, the ground-based FASR will make synoptic measurements of the coronal magnetic field and map emissions from the chromosphere to the middle corona in 3D. With its high spatial, spectral, and temporal resolution, as well as its superior imaging fidelity and dynamic range, FASR will be a highly complementary and synergistic component of solar and heliospheric capabilities needed for the next generation of solar science., Comment: White Paper submitted to the Solar and Space Physics 2024 Decadal Survey

We analyze the structure and evolution of ribbons from the M7.3 SOL2014-04-18T13 flare using ultraviolet (UV) images from IRIS and SDO/AIA, magnetic data from SDO/HMI, hard X-ray (HXR) images from RHESSI, and light curves from Fermi/GBM, in order to infer properties of coronal magnetic reconnection. As the event progresses, two flare ribbons spread away from the magnetic polarity inversion line. The width of the newly brightened front along the extension of the ribbon is highly intermittent in both space and time, presumably reflecting non-uniformities in the structure and/or dynamics of the flare current sheet. Furthermore, the ribbon width grows most rapidly in regions exhibiting concentrated non-thermal HXR emission, with sharp increases slightly preceding the HXR bursts. The light curve of the ultraviolet emission matches the HXR light curve at photon energies above 25 keV. In other regions the ribbon-width evolution and light curves do not temporally correlate with the HXR emission. This indicates that the production of non-thermal electrons is highly non-uniform within the flare current sheet. Our results suggest a strong connection between the production of non-thermal electrons and the locally enhanced perpendicular extent of flare ribbon fronts, which in turn reflects inhomogeneous structure and/or reconnection dynamics of the current sheet. Despite this variability, the ribbon fronts remain nearly continuous, quasi-one-dimensional features. Thus, although the reconnecting coronal current sheets are highly structured, they remain quasi-two-dimensional and the magnetic energy release occurs systematically, rather than stochastically, through the volume of reconnecting magnetic flux.

The formation, development and impact of slow shocks in the upstream region of reconnecting current layers are explored. Slow shocks have been documented in the upstream region of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of magnetic reconnection as well as in similar simulations with the {\it kglobal} kinetic macroscale simulation model. They are therefore a candidate mechanism for preheating the plasma that is injected into the current layers that facilitate magnetic energy release in solar flares. Of particular interest is their potential role in producing the hot thermal component of electrons in flares. During multi-island reconnection, the formation and merging of flux ropes in the reconnecting current layer drives plasma flows and pressure disturbances in the upstream region. These pressure disturbances steepen into slow shocks that propagate along the reconnecting component of the magnetic field and satisfy the expected Rankine-Hugoniot jump conditions. Plasma heating arises from both compression across the shock and the parallel electric field that develops to maintain charge neutrality in a kinetic system. Shocks are weaker at lower plasma $\beta $, where shock steepening is slow. While these upstream slow shocks are intrinsic to the dynamics of multi-island reconnection, their contribution to electron heating remains relatively minor compared with that from Fermi reflection and the parallel electric fields that bound the reconnection outflow., Comment: 9 pages and 5 figures

The origin of switchbacks in the solar wind is discussed in two classes of theory that differ in the location of the source being either in the transition region near the Sun or in the solar wind, itself. The two classes of theory differ in their predictions of the switchback rate as a function of distance from the Sun. To test these theories, one-hour averages of Parker Solar Probe data were summed over orbits three through seven. It is found that: 1. The average switchback rate was independent of distance from the Sun. 2. The average switchback rate increased with solar wind speed. 3. The switchback size perpendicular to the flow increased as R, the distance from the Sun, while the radial size increased as R2, resulting in a large and increasing switchback aspect ratio with distance from the Sun. 4. The switchback rotation angle did not depend on either the solar wind speed or the distance from the Sun. These results are consistent with switchback formation in the transition region because their increase of tangential size with radius compensates for the radial falloff of their equatorial density to produce switchback rates that are independent of distance from the Sun. This constant observed switchback rate is inconsistent with an in situ source. Once formed, the switchback size and aspect ratio, but not the rotation angle, increased with radial distance to at least 100 solar radii. The first self-consistent simulations of electron acceleration during magnetic reconnection in a macroscale system are presented. Consistent with solar flare observations the spectra of energetic electrons take the form of power-laws that extend more than two decades in energy. The drive mechanism for these nonthermal electrons is Fermi reflection in growing and merging magnetic flux ropes. A strong guide field is found to suppress the production of nonthermal electrons by weakening the Fermi drive mechanism. For a weak guide field the total energy content of nonthermal electrons dominates that of the hot thermal electrons even though their number density remains small. Our results are benchmarked with the hard x-ray, radio and extreme ultra-violet (EUV) observations of the X8.2-class solar flare on September 10, 2017.

This paper presents a dynamic constraint formulation to provide protective virtual fixtures of 3D anatomical structures from polygon mesh representations. The proposed approach can anisotropically limit the tool motion of surgical robots without any assumption of the local anatomical shape close to the tool. Using a bounded search strategy and Principle Directed tree, the proposed system can run efficiently at 180 Hz for a mesh object containing 989,376 triangles and 493,460 vertices. The proposed algorithm has been validated in both simulation and skull cutting experiments. The skull cutting experiment setup uses a novel piezoelectric bone cutting tool designed for the da Vinci research kit. The result shows that the virtual fixture assisted teleoperation has statistically significant improvements in the cutting path accuracy and penetration depth control. Craniosynostosis, a condition affecting 1 in 2000 infants, is caused by premature fusing of cranial vault sutures, and manifests itself in abnormal skull growth patterns. Left untreated, the condition may lead to severe developmental impairment. Standard practice is to apply corrective cranial bandeau remodeling surgery in the first year of the infant's life. The most frequent type of surgery involves the removal of the so-called fronto-orbital bar from the patient's forehead and the cutting of well-placed incisions to reshape the skull in order to obtain the desired result. In this paper, we propose a precise optimization model for the above cranial bandeau remodeling problem and its variants. We have developed efficient algorithms that solve best incision placement, and show hardness for more general cases in the class. To the best of our knowledge this paper is the first to introduce optimization models for craniofacial surgery applications.

A new computational model, kglobal, is being developed to explore energetic electron production via magnetic reconnection in macroscale systems. The model is based on the discovery that the production of energetic electrons during reconnection is controlled by Fermi reflection in large-scale magnetic fields and not by parallel electric fields localized in kinetic scale boundary layers. Thus, the model eliminates these boundary layers. However, although the parallel electric fields that develop around the magnetic x-line and associated separatrices are not important in producing energetic electrons, there is a large scale electric field that kickstarts the heating of low-energy electrons and drives the cold-electron return current that accompanies escaping energetic electrons in open systems. This macroscale electric field is produced by magnetic-field-aligned gradients in the electron pressure. We have upgraded kglobal to include this large-scale electric field while maintaining energy conservation. The new model is tested by exploring the dynamics of electron acoustic modes which develop as a consequence of the presence of two electron species: hot kinetic and cold fluid electrons. Remarkably, the damping of electron acoustic modes is accurately captured by kglobal. Additionally, it has been established that kglobal correctly describes the dynamics of the interaction of the parallel electric field with escaping hot electrons through benchmarking simulations with the Particle-In-Cell (PIC) code p3d., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, double columns

Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental physical process in many laboratory, space, and astrophysical plasma contexts. Solar flares serve as an outstanding laboratory to study the magnetic reconnection and the associated energy release and conversion processes under plasma conditions difficult to reproduce in the laboratory, and with considerable spatiotemporal details not possible elsewhere in astrophysics. Here we emphasize the unique power of remote-sensing observations of solar flares at radio wavelengths. In particular, we discuss the transformative technique of broadband radio dynamic imaging spectroscopy in making significant contributions to addressing several outstanding challenges in magnetic reconnection, including the capability of pinpointing magnetic reconnection sites, measuring the time-evolving reconnecting magnetic fields, and deriving the spatially and temporally resolved distribution function of flare-accelerated electrons., Comment: Submitted to the Astro2020 Decadal Survey call for science white papers (5 pages + references, 2 figures)

We describe a systematic development of kinetic entropy as a diagnostic in fully kinetic particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations and use it to interpret plasma physics processes in heliospheric, planetary, and astrophysical systems. First, we calculate kinetic entropy in two forms -- the ``combinatorial'' form related to the logarithm of the number of microstates per macrostate and the ``continuous'' form related to $f \ln f$, where $f$ is the particle distribution function. We discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each and discuss subtleties about implementing them in PIC codes. Using collisionless PIC simulations that are two-dimensional in position space and three-dimensional in velocity space, we verify the implementation of the kinetic entropy diagnostics and discuss how to optimize numerical parameters to ensure accurate results. We show the total kinetic entropy is conserved to three percent in an optimized simulation of anti-parallel magnetic reconnection. Kinetic entropy can be decomposed into a sum of a position space entropy and a velocity space entropy, and we use this to investigate the nature of kinetic entropy transport during collisionless reconnection. We find the velocity space entropy of both electrons and ions increases in time due to plasma heating during magnetic reconnection, while the position space entropy decreases due to plasma compression. This project uses collisionless simulations, so it cannot address physical dissipation mechanisms; nonetheless, the infrastructure developed here should be useful for studies of collisional or weakly collisional heliospheric, planetary, and astrophysical systems. The shape of the solar wind bubble within the interstellar medium, the so-called heliosphere, has been explored over six decades. As the Sun moves through the surrounding partially-ionized medium, neutral hydrogen atoms penetrate the heliosphere, and through charge-exchange with the supersonic solar wind, create a population of hot pick-up ions (PUIs). The Termination Shock (TS) crossing by Voyager 2 (V2) data demonstrated that the heliosheath (HS) (the region of shocked solar wind) pressure is dominated by suprathermal particles. Here we use a novel magnetohydrodynamic model that treats the freshly ionized PUIs as a separate fluid from the thermal component of the solar wind. Unlike previous models, the new model reproduces the properties of the PUIs and solar wind ions based on the New Horizon and V2 spacecraft observations. The PUIs charge exchange with the cold neutral H atoms of the ISM in the HS and are quickly depleted. The depletion of PUIs cools the heliosphere downstream of the TS, "deflating" it and leading to a narrower HS and a smaller and rounder shape, in agreement with energetic neutral atom observations by the Cassini spacecraft. The new model, with interstellar magnetic field orientation constrained by the IBEX ribbon, reproduces the magnetic field data outside the HP at Voyager 1(V1). A recent study by Opher et al. (2015) suggested the heliosphere has a "croissant" shape, where the heliosheath plasma is confined by the toroidal solar magnetic field. The "croissant" heliosphere is in contrast to the classically accepted view of a comet-like tail. We investigate the effect of the "croissant" heliosphere model on energetic neutral atom (ENA) maps. Regardless of the existence of a split tail, the confinement of the heliosheath plasma should appear in ENA maps. ENA maps from the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) have shown two high latitude lobes with excess ENA flux at higher energies in the tail of the heliosphere. These lobes could be a signature of the confinement of the heliosheath plasma, while some have argued they are caused by the fast/slow solar wind profile. Here we present ENA maps of the "croissant" heliosphere, focusing on understanding the effect of the heliosheath plasma collimation by the solar magnetic field while using a uniform solar wind. We incorporate pick-up ions (PUIs) into our model based on Malama et al. (2006) and Zank et al. (2010). We use the neutral solution from our MHD model to determine the angular variation of the PUIs, and include the extinction of PUIs in the heliosheath. In the presence of a uniform solar wind, we find that the collimation in the "croissant" heliosphere does manifest itself into two high latitude lobes of increased ENA flux in the downwind direction., Comment: 14 pages, 1 table, 7 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

The outflow velocity of jets produced by collisionless magnetic reconnection is shown to be reduced by the ion exhaust temperature in simulations and observations. We derive a scaling relationship for the outflow velocity based on the upstream Alfv\'en speed and the parallel ion exhaust temperature, which is verified in kinetic simulations and observations. The outflow speed reduction is shown to be due to the firehose instability criterion, and so for large enough guide fields this effect is suppressed and the outflow speed reaches the upstream Alfv\'en speed based on the reconnecting component of the magnetic field.

The structure of dipolarization jets with finite width in the dawn-dusk direction relevant to magnetic reconnection in the Earth's magnetotail is explored with particle-in-cell simulations. We carry out Riemann simulations of the evolution of the jet in the dawn-dusk, north-south plane to investigate the dependence of the jet structure on the jet width in the dawn-dusk direction. We find that the magnetic field and Earth-directed ion flow structure depend on the dawn-dusk width. A reversal in the usual Hall magnetic field near the center of the current sheet on the dusk side of larger jets is observed. For small widths, the maximum velocity of the Earthward flow is significantly reduced below the theoretical limit of the upstream Alfv\'en speed. However, the ion flow speed approaches this limit once the width exceeds the ion Larmor radius based on the normal magnetic field, $B_z$.

How impulsive magnetic energy release leads to solar eruptions and how those eruptions are energized and evolve are vital unsolved problems in Heliophysics. The standard model for solar eruptions summarizes our current understanding of these events. Magnetic energy in the corona is released through drastic restructuring of the magnetic field via reconnection. Electrons and ions are then accelerated by poorly understood processes. Theories include contracting loops, merging magnetic islands, stochastic acceleration, and turbulence at shocks, among others. Although this basic model is well established, the fundamental physics is poorly understood. HXR observations using grazing-incidence focusing optics can now probe all of the key regions of the standard model. These include two above-the-looptop (ALT) sources which bookend the reconnection region and are likely the sites of particle acceleration and direct heating. The science achievable by a direct HXR imaging instrument can be summarized by the following science questions and objectives which are some of the most outstanding issues in solar physics (1) How are particles accelerated at the Sun? (1a) Where are electrons accelerated and on what time scales? (1b) What fraction of electrons is accelerated out of the ambient medium? (2) How does magnetic energy release on the Sun lead to flares and eruptions? A Focusing Optics X-ray Solar Imager (FOXSI) instrument, which can be built now using proven technology and at modest cost, would enable revolutionary advancements in our understanding of impulsive magnetic energy release and particle acceleration, a process which is known to occur at the Sun but also throughout the Universe., Comment: Next Generation Solar Physics Mission white paper, 2 figures
