Search

The observed scaling relations between supermassive black hole masses and their host galaxy properties indicate that supermassive black holes influence the evolution of galaxies. However, the scaling relations may be affected by selection biases. We propose to measure black hole masses in a mass-limited galaxy sample including all non-detections to inprove constraints on galaxy mass - black hole mass scaling relations and test for selection bias. We use high spatial resolution spectroscopy from the Keck and Gemini telescopes, and the Jeans Anisotropic Modelling method to measure black hole masses in early type galaxies from the Virgo Cluster. We present four new black hole masses and one upper limit in our mass-selected sample of galaxies of galaxy mass (1.0-3.2) x $10^{10} M_\odot$. This brings the total measured to 11 galaxies out of a full sample of 18 galaxies, allowing us to constrain scaling relations. We calculate a lower limit for the average black hole mass in our sample of 3.7 x $10^{7} M_\odot$. This is at an average galaxy stellar mass of (1.81 +/- 0.14) x $10^{10} M_\odot $ and an average bulge mass of (1.31 +/- 0.15) x $10^{10} M_\odot$. This lower limit shows that black hole masses in early type galaxies are not strongly affected by selection biases.

Compact elliptical (cE) galaxies remain an elusively difficult galaxy class to study. Recent observations have suggested that isolated and host-associated cEs have different formation pathways, while simulation studies have also shown different pathways can lead to a cE galaxy. However a solid link has not been established, and the relative contributions of each pathway in a cosmological context remains unknown. Here we combine a spatially-resolved observational sample of cEs taken from the SAMI galaxy survey with a matched sample of galaxies within the IllustrisTNG cosmological simulation to establish an overall picture of how these galaxies form. The observed cEs located near a host galaxy appear redder, smaller and older than isolated cEs, supporting previous evidence for multiple formation pathways. Tracing the simulated cEs back through time, we find two main formation pathways; 32 $\pm$ 5 percent formed via the stripping of a spiral galaxy by a larger host galaxy, while 68 $\pm$ 4 percent formed through a gradual build-up of stellar mass in isolated environments. We confirm that cEs in different environments do indeed form via different pathways, with all isolated cEs in our sample having formed via in-situ formation (i.e. none were ejected from a previous host), and 77 $\pm$ 6 percent of host-associated cEs having formed via tidal stripping. Separating them by their formation pathway, we are able to reproduce the observed differences between isolated and host-associated cEs, showing that these differences can be fully explained by the different formation pathways dominating in each environment., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS. We use the hydrodynamic EAGLE simulation to predict the numbers and masses of supermassive black holes in remnant nuclei of disrupted galaxies (stripped nuclei) and compare these to confirmed measurements of black holes in observed ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs). We find that black holes in stripped nuclei are consistent with the numbers and masses of those in observed UCDs. Approximately 50 per cent of stripped nuclei with $M > 2 \times 10^6 M_\odot$ should contain supermassive black holes. We further calculate how the presence of a black hole increases the dynamical mass of a stripped nucleus via the mass elevation ratio $\Psi$ defined as the ratio of the kinematically derived mass to the expected mass from stellar population synthesis. We find $\Psi_{sim} = 1.51^{+0.06}_{-0.04}$ for $M > 10^7 M_\odot$ stripped nuclei, consistent with that of observed UCDs which have $\Psi_{obs} = 1.7 \pm 0.2$ above $M > 10^7 M_\odot$. We also find that the mass elevation ratios of stripped nuclei with supermassive black holes can explain the observed number of UCDs with elevated mass-to-light ratios. Finally, we predict the relative number of massive black holes in stripped nuclei and galaxy nuclei and find that stripped nuclei should increase the number of black holes in galaxy clusters by 30 - 100 per cent, depending on the black hole occupation fraction of low-mass galaxies. The optical morphology of galaxies is strongly related to galactic environment, with the fraction of early-type galaxies increasing with local galaxy density. In this work we present the first analysis of the galaxy morphology-density relation in a cosmological hydrodynamical simulation. We use a convolutional neural network, trained on observed galaxies, to perform visual morphological classification of galaxies with stellar masses $M_\ast > 10^{10} \, \mathrm{M}_\odot$ in the EAGLE simulation into elliptical, lenticular and late-type (spiral/irregular) classes. We find that EAGLE reproduces both the galaxy morphology-density and morphology-mass relations. Using the simulations, we find three key processes that result in the observed morphology-density relation: (i) transformation of disc-dominated galaxies from late-type (spiral) to lenticular galaxies through gas stripping in high-density environments, (ii) formation of lenticular galaxies by merger-induced black hole feedback in low-density environments, and (iii) an increasing fraction of high-mass galaxies, which are more often elliptical galaxies, at higher galactic densities., Comment: 19 pages, 17 figures, published in MNRAS

We explore the kinematic scaling relations of 38 dwarf galaxies in the Fornax Cluster using observations from the SAMI integral field spectrograph. We focus on the Fundamental Plane (FP), defined by the physical properties of the objects (scale length, surface brightness and velocity dispersion) and the Stellar Mass (Fundamental) Plane, where surface brightness is replaced by stellar mass, and investigate their dynamical-to-stellar-mass ratio. We confirm earlier results that the Fornax dEs are significantly offset above the FP defined by massive, hot stellar systems. For the Stellar Mass (Fundamental) Plane, which shows much lower scatter, we find that young and old dwarf galaxies lie at about the same distance from the plane, all with comparable scatter. We introduce the perpendicular deviation of dwarf galaxies from the Stellar Mass Plane defined by giant early-types as a robust estimate of their DM fraction, and find that the faintest dwarfs are systematically offset above the plane, implying that they have a higher dark matter fraction. This result is confirmed when estimating the dynamical mass of our dEs using a virial mass estimator, tracing the onset of dark matter domination in low mass stellar systems. We find that the position of our galaxies on the Stellar Mass FP agrees with the galaxies in the Local Group. This seems to imply that the processes determining the position of dwarf galaxies on the FP depend on the environment in the same way, whether the galaxy is situated in the Local Group or in the Fornax Cluster., Comment: 23 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In Galaxy And Mass Assembly Data Release 4 (GAMA DR4), we make available our full spectroscopic redshift sample. This includes 248682 galaxy spectra, and, in combination with earlier surveys, results in 330542 redshifts across five sky regions covering ~250deg^2. The redshift density, is the highest available over such a sustained area, has exceptionally high completeness (95 per cent to r_KIDS=19.65mag), and is well suited for the study of galaxy mergers, galaxy groups, and the low redshift (z<0.25) galaxy population. DR4 includes 32 value-added tables or Data Management Units (DMUs) that provide a number of measured and derived data products including GALEX, ESO KiDS, ESO VIKING, WISE and Herschel Space Observatory imaging. Within this release, we provide visual morphologies for 15330 galaxies to z<0.08, photometric redshift estimates for all 18million objects to r_KIDS~25mag, and stellar velocity dispersions for 111830 galaxies. We conclude by deriving the total galaxy stellar mass function (GSMF) and its sub-division by morphological class (elliptical, compact-bulge and disc, diffuse-bulge and disc, and disc only). This extends our previous measurement of the total GSMF down to 10^6.75 M_sol h^-2_70 and we find a total stellar mass density of rho_*=(2.97+/-0.04)x10^8 M_sol h_70 Mpc^-3 or Omega_*=(2.17+/-0.03)x10^-3 h^-1_70. We conclude that at z<0.1, the Universe has converted 4.9+/-0.1 per cent of the baryonic mass implied by Big Bang Nucleosynthesis into stars that are gravitationally bound within the galaxy population., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Despite their ubiquity throughout the Universe, the formation of S0 galaxies remains uncertain. Recent observations have revealed that S0 galaxies make up a diverse population which is difficult to explain with a single formation pathway, suggesting that the picture of how these galaxies form is more complicated than originally envisioned. Here we take advantage of the latest hydrodynamical cosmological simulations and follow up these studies with an investigation into the formation histories of S0s in IllustrisTNG. We first classify IllustrisTNG galaxies in a way which is fully consistent with the observations, and reproduce the observed photometric and environmental distributions seen for the S0 population. We then trace the formation histories of S0 galaxies back through time, identifying two main distinct pathways; those which experienced gas stripping via group infalls (37 percent of S0s) or significant merger events (57 percent). We find that those forming via mergers feature a transient star-forming ring, whose present-day occurrence rate matches observations. We find that these formation pathways together can reproduce the range in rotational support in observed S0s, concluding that there are two main formation pathways for S0 galaxies., Comment: 17 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We use the hydrodynamical EAGLE simulation to test if ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) can form by tidal stripping by predicting the ages and metallicities of tidally stripped galaxy nuclei in massive galaxy clusters, and compare these results to compiled observations of age and metallicities of observed UCDs. We further calculate the colours of our sample of simulated stripped nuclei using SSP models and compare these colours to observations of UCDs in the Virgo cluster. We find that the ages of observed UCDs are consistent with simulated stripped nuclei, with both groups of objects having a mean age > 9 Gyr. Both stripped nuclei and UCDs follow a similar mass-metallicity relationship, and the metallicities of observed UCDs are consistent with those of simulated stripped nuclei for objects with M > $10^{7}~M_{\odot}$. The colours of observed UCDs are also consistent with our simulated stripped nuclei, for objects with M > $10^{7}~M_{\odot}$, with more massive objects being redder. We find that the colours of stripped nuclei exhibit a bimodal red and blue distribution that can be explained by the dependency of colour on age and metallicity, and by the mass-colour relation. We additionally find that our low mass stripped nuclei sample is consistent with the colour of blue globular clusters. We use the hydrodynamical EAGLE simulation to predict the numbers, masses and radial distributions of tidally stripped galaxy nuclei in massive galaxy clusters, and compare these results to observations of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) in the Virgo cluster. We trace the merger trees of galaxies in massive galaxy clusters back in time and determine the numbers and masses of stripped nuclei from galaxies disrupted in mergers. The spatial distribution of stripped nuclei in the simulations is consistent with those of UCDs surrounding massive galaxies in the Virgo cluster. Additionally, the numbers of stripped nuclei are consistent with the numbers of M > $10^{7}~M_{\odot}$ UCDs around individual galaxies and in the Virgo cluster as a whole. The mass distributions in this mass range are also consistent. We find that the numbers of stripped nuclei surrounding individual galaxies correlates better with the stellar or halo mass of individual galaxies than the total cluster mass. We conclude that most high mass (M > $10^{7}~M_{\odot}$ UCDs are likely stripped nuclei. It is difficult to draw reliable conclusions about low mass (M < $10^{7}~M_{\odot}$ UCDs because of observational selection effects. We additionally predict that a few hundred stripped nuclei below a mass of $2~\times~10^{6}~M_{\odot}$ should exist in massive galaxies that will overlap in mass with the globular cluster population. We have entered a new era where integral-field spectroscopic surveys of galaxies are sufficiently large to adequately sample large-scale structure over a cosmologically significant volume. This was the primary design goal of the SAMI Galaxy Survey. Here, in Data Release 3 (DR3), we release data for the full sample of 3068 unique galaxies observed. This includes the SAMI cluster sample of 888 unique galaxies for the first time. For each galaxy, there are two primary spectral cubes covering the blue (370-570nm) and red (630-740nm) optical wavelength ranges at spectral resolving power of R=1808 and 4304 respectively. For each primary cube, we also provide three spatially binned spectral cubes and a set of standardized aperture spectra. For each galaxy, we include complete 2D maps from parameterized fitting to the emission-line and absorption-line spectral data. These maps provide information on the gas ionization and kinematics, stellar kinematics and populations, and more. It has been proposed that S0 galaxies are either fading spirals or the result of galaxy mergers. The relative contribution of each pathway, and the environments in which they occur remains unknown. Here we investigate stellar and gas kinematics of 219 S0s in the SAMI Survey to look for signs of multiple formation pathways occurring across the full range of environments. We identify a large range of rotational support in their stellar kinematics, which correspond to ranges in their physical structure. We find that pressure-supported S0s with $v/{\sigma}$ below 0.5 tend to be more compact and feature misaligned stellar and gas components, suggesting an external origin for their gas. We postulate that these S0s are consistent with being formed through a merger process. Meanwhile, comparisons of ellipticity, stellar mass and S\'ersic index distributions with spiral galaxies shows that the rotationally supported S0s with $v/{\sigma}$ above 0.5 are more consistent with a faded spiral origin. In addition, a simulated merger pathway involving a compact elliptical and gas-rich satellite results in an S0 that lies within the pressure-supported group. We conclude that two S0 formation pathways are active, with mergers dominating in isolated galaxies and small groups, and the faded spiral pathway being most prominent in large groups ($10^{13} < M_{halo} < 10^{14}$)., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Dwarf ellipticals are the most common galaxy type in cluster environments, however the challenges associated with their observation mean their formation mechanisms are still poorly understood. To address this, we present deep integral field observations of a sample of 31 low-mass ($10^{7.5} <$ M$_\star < 10^{9.5}$ M$_\odot$) early-type galaxies in the Fornax cluster with the SAMI instrument. For 21 galaxies our observations are sufficiently deep to construct spatially resolved maps of the stellar velocity and velocity dispersion - for the remaining galaxies we extract global velocities and dispersions from aperture spectra only. From the kinematic maps we measure the specific stellar angular momentum $\lambda_R$ of the lowest mass dE galaxies to date. Combining our observations with early-type galaxy data from the literature spanning a large range in stellar mass, we find that $\lambda_R$ decreases towards lower stellar mass, with a corresponding increase in the proportion of slowly rotating galaxies in this regime. The decrease of $\lambda_R$ with mass in our sample dE galaxies is consistent with a similar trend seen in somewhat more massive spiral galaxies from the CALIFA survey. This suggests that the degree of dynamical heating required to produce dEs from low-mass starforming progenitors may be relatively modest, and consistent with a broad range of formation mechanisms., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures and an additional 10 pages of appendices. The WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey measured the redshifts of over 200,000 UV-selected (NUV<22.8 mag) galaxies on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. The survey detected the baryon acoustic oscillation signal in the large scale distribution of galaxies over the redshift range 0.2

We compare the results of a large grid of N-body simulations with the surface brightness and velocity dispersion profiles of the globular clusters $\omega$ Cen and NGC 6624. Our models include clusters with varying stellar-mass black hole retention fractions and varying masses of a central intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH). We find that an $\sim 45,000$ M$_\odot$ IMBH, whose presence has been suggested based on the measured velocity dispersion profile of $\omega$ Cen, predicts the existence of about 20 fast-moving, $m>0.5$ M$_\odot$ main-sequence stars with a (1D) velocity $v>60$ km/sec in the central 20 arcsec of $\omega$ Cen. However no such star is present in the HST/ACS proper motion catalogue of Bellini et al. (2017), strongly ruling out the presence of a massive IMBH in the core of $\omega$ Cen. Instead, we find that all available data can be fitted by a model that contains 4.6% of the mass of $\omega$ Cen in a centrally concentrated cluster of stellar-mass black holes. We show that this mass fraction in stellar-mass BHs is compatible with the predictions of stellar evolution models of massive stars. We also compare our grid of $N$-body simulations with NGC 6624, a cluster recently claimed to harbor a 20,000 M$_\odot$ black hole based on timing observations of millisecond pulsars. However, we find that models with $M_{IMBH}>1,000$ M$_\odot$ IMBHs are incompatible with the observed velocity dispersion and surface brightness profile of NGC 6624,ruling out the presence of a massive IMBH in this cluster. Numerous studies have demonstrated the ability of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to classify large numbers of galaxies in a manner which mimics the expertise of astronomers. Such classifications are not always physically motivated, however, such as categorising galaxies by their morphological types. In this work, we consider the use of CNNs to classify simulated S0 galaxies based on fundamental physical properties. In particular, we undertake two investigations: (1) the classification of simulated S0 galaxies into three distinct evolutionary paths (isolated, tidal interaction in a group halo, and Spiral-Spiral merger), and (2) the prediction of the mass ratio for the S0s formed via mergers. To train the CNNs, we first run several hundred N-body simulations to model the formation of S0s under idealised conditions; and then we build our training datasets by creating images of stellar density and two dimensional kinematic maps for each simulated S0. Our trained networks have remarkable accuracies exceeding 99% when classifying the S0 formation pathway. For the case of predicting merger mass ratios, the mean predictions are consistent with the true values to within roughly one standard deviation across the full range of our data. We present an analysis of the integrated neutral hydrogen (HI) properties for 27 galaxies within nine low mass, gas-rich, late-type dominated groups which we denote "Choirs". We find that majority of the central Choir galaxies have average HI content: they have a normal gas-mass fraction with respect to isolated galaxies of the same stellar mass. In contrast, we find more satellite galaxies with a lower gas-mass fraction than isolated galaxies of the same stellar mass. A likely reason for the lower gas content in these galaxies is tidal stripping. Both the specific star formation rate and the star formation efficiency of the central group galaxies are similar to galaxies in isolation. The Choir satellite galaxies have similar specific star formation rate as galaxies in isolation, therefore satellites that exhibit a higher star formation efficiency simply owe it to their lower gas-mass fractions. We find that the most HI massive galaxies have the largest HI discs and fall neatly onto the HI size-mass relation, while outliers are galaxies that are experiencing interactions. We find that high specific angular momentum could be a reason for galaxies to retain the large fraction of HI gas in their discs. This shows that for the Choir groups with no evidence of interactions, as well as those with traces of minor mergers, the internal galaxy properties dominate over the effects of residing in a group. We present the second major release of data from the SAMI Galaxy Survey. Data Release Two includes data for 1559 galaxies, about 50% of the full survey. Galaxies included have a redshift range 0.004 < z < 0.113 and a large stellar mass range 7.5 < log (M_star/M_sun) < 11.6. The core data for each galaxy consist of two primary spectral cubes covering the blue and red optical wavelength ranges. For each primary cube we also provide three spatially binned spectral cubes and a set of standardised aperture spectra. For each core data product we provide a set of value-added data products. This includes all emission line value-added products from Data Release One, expanded to the larger sample. In addition we include stellar kinematic and stellar population value-added products derived from absorption line measurements. The data are provided online through Australian Astronomical Optics' Data Central. We illustrate the potential of this release by presenting the distribution of ~350,000 stellar velocity dispersion measurements from individual spaxels as a function of R/R_e, divided in four galaxy mass bins. In the highest stellar mass bin (log (M_star/M_sun)>11), the velocity dispersion strongly increases towards the centre, whereas below log (M_star/M_sun)<10 we find no evidence for a clear increase in the central velocity dispersion. This suggests a transition mass around log (M_star/M_sun) ~10 for galaxies with or without a dispersion-dominated bulge., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS. We present hydrodynamical N-body models which demonstrate that elliptical galaxies can transform into S0s by acquiring a disc. In particular, we show that the merger with a massive gas-rich satellite can lead to the formation of a baryonic disc around an elliptical. We model the elliptical as a massive, compact galaxy which could be observed as a 'red nugget' in the high-z universe. This scenario contrasts with existing S0 formation scenarios in the literature in two important ways. First, the progenitor is an elliptical galaxy whereas scenarios in the literature typically assume a spiral progenitor. Second, the physical conditions underlying our proposed scenario can exist in low-density environments such as the field, in contrast to scenarios in the literature which typically address dense environments like clusters and groups. As a consequence, S0s in the field may be the most likely candidates to have evolved from elliptical progenitors. Our scenario also naturally explains recent observations which indicate that field S0s may have older bulges than discs, contrary to cluster S0s which seem to have older discs than bulges., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS

We present the ~800 star formation rate maps for the SAMI Galaxy Survey based on H{\alpha} emission maps, corrected for dust attenuation via the Balmer decrement, that are included in the SAMI Public Data Release 1. We mask out spaxels contaminated by non-stellar emission using the [O III]/H{\beta}, [N II]/H{\alpha}, [S II]/H{\alpha}, and [O I]/H{\alpha} line ratios. Using these maps, we examine the global and resolved star-forming main sequences of SAMI galaxies as a function of morphology, environmental density, and stellar mass. Galaxies further below the star-forming main sequence are more likely to have flatter star formation profiles. Early-type galaxies split into two populations with similar stellar masses and central stellar mass surface densities. The main sequence population has centrally-concentrated star formation similar to late-type galaxies, while galaxies >3{\sigma} below the main sequence show significantly reduced star formation most strikingly in the nuclear regions. The split populations support a two-step quenching mechanism, wherein halo mass first cuts off the gas supply and remaining gas continues to form stars until the local stellar mass surface density can stabilize the reduced remaining fuel against further star formation. Across all morphologies, galaxies in denser environments show a decreased specific star formation rate from the outside in, supporting an environmental cause for quenching, such as ram-pressure stripping or galaxy interactions., Comment: accepted to MNRAS

In this paper we test if nearby blue spheroid (BSphs) galaxies may become the progenitors of star-forming spiral galaxies or passively-evolving elliptical galaxies. Our sample comprises 428 galaxies of various morphologies in the redshift range 0.002

We present the first major release of data from the SAMI Galaxy Survey. This data release focuses on the emission-line physics of galaxies. Data Release One includes data for 772 galaxies, about 20% of the full survey. Galaxies included have the redshift range 0.004 < z < 0.092, a large mass range (7.6 < log(Mstellar/M$_\odot$) < 11.6), and star-formation rates of 10^-4 to 10^1\ M$_\odot$/yr. For each galaxy, we include two spectral cubes and a set of spatially resolved 2D maps: single- and multi-component emission-line fits (with dust extinction corrections for strong lines), local dust extinction and star-formation rate. Calibration of the fibre throughputs, fluxes and differential-atmospheric-refraction has been improved over the Early Data Release. The data have average spatial resolution of 2.16 arcsec (FWHM) over the 15~arcsec diameter field of view and spectral (kinematic) resolution R=4263 (sigma=30km/s) around Halpha. The relative flux calibration is better than 5\% and absolute flux calibration better than $\pm0.22$~mag, with the latter estimate limited by galaxy photometry. We present the evolution of the Cosmic Spectral Energy Distribution (CSED) from $z = 1 - 0$. Our CSEDs originate from stacking individual spectral energy distribution fits based on panchromatic photometry from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) and COSMOS datasets in ten redshift intervals with completeness corrections applied. Below $z = 0.45$, we have credible SED fits from 100 nm to 1 mm. Due to the relatively low sensitivity of the far-infrared data, our far-infrared CSEDs contain a mix of predicted and measured fluxes above $z = 0.45$. Our results include appropriate errors to highlight the impact of these corrections. We show that the bolometric energy output of the Universe has declined by a factor of roughly four -- from $5.1 \pm 1.0$ at $z \sim 1$ to $1.3 \pm 0.3 \times 10^{35}~h_{70}$~W~Mpc$^{-3}$ at the current epoch. We show that this decrease is robust to cosmic variance, SED modelling and other various types of error. Our CSEDs are also consistent with an increase in the mean age of stellar populations. We also show that dust attenuation has decreased over the same period, with the photon escape fraction at 150~nm increasing from $16 \pm 3$ at $z \sim 1$ to $24 \pm 5$ per cent at the current epoch, equivalent to a decrease in $A_\mathrm{FUV}$ of 0.4~mag. Our CSEDs account for $68 \pm 12$ and $61 \pm 13$ per cent of the cosmic optical and infrared backgrounds respectively as defined from integrated galaxy counts and are consistent with previous estimates of the cosmic infrared background with redshift., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We examine the kinematic morphology of early-type galaxies (ETGs) in eight galaxy clusters in the Sydney-AAO Multi-object Integral field spectrograph (SAMI) Galaxy Survey. The clusters cover a mass range of 14.2

There are many proposed mechanisms driving the morphological transformation of disk galaxies to elliptical galaxies. In this paper, we determine if the observed transformation in low mass groups can be explained by the merger histories of galaxies. We measured the group mass-morphology relation for groups from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly group catalogue with masses from 10$^{11}$ - 10$^{15}$ M$_{\odot}$. Contrary to previous studies, the fraction of elliptical galaxies in our more complete group sample increases significantly with group mass across the full range of group mass. The elliptical fraction increases at a rate of 0.163$\pm$0.012 per dex of group mass for groups more massive than 10$^{12.5}$ M$_{\odot}$. If we allow for uncertainties in the observed group masses, our results are consistent with a continuous increase in elliptical fraction from group masses as low as 10$^{11}$M$_{\odot}$. We tested if this observed relation is consistent with merger activity using a GADGET-2 dark matter simulation of the galaxy groups. We specified that a simulated galaxy would be transformed to an elliptical morphology either if it experienced a major merger or if its cumulative mass gained from minor mergers exceeded 30 per cent of its final mass. We then calculated a group mass-morphology relation for the simulations. The position and slope of the simulated relation were consistent with the observational relation, with a gradient of 0.184$\pm$0.010 per dex of group mass. These results demonstrate a strong correlation between the frequency of merger events and disk-to-elliptical galaxy transformation in galaxy group environments., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures. We present results from the 2D anisotropic Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) signal present in the final dataset from the WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey. We analyse the WiggleZ data in two ways: firstly using the full shape of the 2D correlation function and secondly focussing only on the position of the BAO peak in the reconstructed data set. When fitting for the full shape of the 2D correlation function we use a multipole expansion to compare with theory. When we use the reconstructed data we marginalise over the shape and just measure the position of the BAO peak, analysing the data in wedges separating the signal along the line of sight from that parallel to the line of sight. We verify our method with mock data and find the results to be free of bias or systematic offsets. We also redo the pre-reconstruction angle averaged (1D) WiggleZ BAO analysis with an improved covariance and present an updated result. The final results are presented in the form of $\Omega_c h^2$, $H(z)$, and $D_A(z)$ for three redshift bins with effective redshifts $z = 0.44$, $0.60$, and $0.73$. Within these bins and methodologies, we recover constraints between 5% and 22% error. Our cosmological constraints are consistent with Flat $\Lambda$CDM cosmology and agree with results from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS)., Comment: 18 pages, 18 figures. We present radio Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) luminosity functions over the redshift range 0.005 < z < 0.75. The sample from which the luminosity functions are constructed is an optical spectroscopic survey of radio galaxies, identified from matched Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-cm survey (FIRST) sources and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) images.The radio AGN are separated into Low Excitation Radio Galaxies (LERGs) and High Excitation Radio Galaxies (HERGs) using the optical spectra. We derive radio luminosity functions for LERGs and HERGs separately in the three redshift bins (0.005 < z < 0.3, 0.3 < z < 0.5 and 0.5 < z <0.75). The radio luminosity functions can be well described by a double power-law. Assuming this double power-law shape the LERG population displays little or no evolution over this redshift range evolving as ~$(1+z)^{0.06}$ assuming pure density evolution or ~ $(1+z)^{0.46}$ assuming pure luminosity evolution. In contrast, the HERG population evolves more rapidly, best fitted by ~$(1+z)^{2.93}$ assuming a double power-law shape and pure density evolution. If a pure luminosity model is assumed the best fitting HERG evolution is parameterised by ~$(1+z)^{7.41}$. The characteristic break in the radio luminosity function occurs at a significantly higher power (~1 dex) for the HERG population in comparison to the LERGs. We present DEIMOS multi-object spectroscopy (MOS) of 22 star-forming dwarf galaxies located in four gas-rich groups, including six newly-discovered dwarfs. Two of the galaxies are strong tidal dwarf galaxy (TDG) candidates based on our luminosity-metallicity relation definition. We model the rotation curves of these galaxies. Our sample shows low mass-to-light ratios (M/L=0.73$\pm0.39M_\odot/L_\odot$) as expected for young, star-forming dwarfs. One of the galaxies in our sample has an apparently strongly-falling rotation curve, reaching zero rotational velocity outside the turnover radius of $r_{turn}=1.2r_e$. This may be 1) a polar ring galaxy, with a tilted bar within a face-on disk; 2) a kinematic warp. These scenarios are indistinguishable with our current data due to limitations of slit alignment inherent to MOS-mode observations. We consider whether TDGs can be detected based on their tidal radius, beyond which tidal stripping removes kinematic tracers such as H$\alpha$ emission. When the tidal radius is less than about twice the turnover radius, the expected falling rotation curve cannot be reliably measured. This is problematic for as much as half of our sample, and indeed more generally, galaxies in groups like these. Further to this, the H$\alpha$ light that remains must be sufficiently bright to be detected; this is only the case for three (14%) galaxies in our sample. We present the GAMA Panchromatic Data Release (PDR) constituting over 230deg$^2$ of imaging with photometry in 21 bands extending from the far-UV to the far-IR. These data complement our spectroscopic campaign of over 300k galaxies, and are compiled from observations with a variety of facilities including: GALEX, SDSS, VISTA, WISE, and Herschel, with the GAMA regions currently being surveyed by VST and scheduled for observations by ASKAP. These data are processed to a common astrometric solution, from which photometry is derived for 221,373 galaxies with r<19.8 mag. Online tools are provided to access and download data cutouts, or the full mosaics of the GAMA regions in each band. We focus, in particular, on the reduction and analysis of the VISTA VIKING data, and compare to earlier datasets (i.e., 2MASS and UKIDSS) before combining the data and examining its integrity. Having derived the 21-band photometric catalogue we proceed to fit the data using the energy balance code MAGPHYS. These measurements are then used to obtain the first fully empirical measurement of the 0.1-500$\mu$m energy output of the Universe. Exploring the Cosmic Spectral Energy Distribution (CSED) across three time-intervals (0.3-1.1Gyr, 1.1-1.8~Gyr and 1.8---2.4~Gyr), we find that the Universe is currently generating $(1.5 \pm 0.3) \times 10^{35}$ h$_{70}$ W Mpc$^{-3}$, down from $(2.5 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{35}$ h$_{70}$ W Mpc$^{-3}$ 2.3~Gyr ago. More importantly, we identify significant and smooth evolution in the integrated photon escape fraction at all wavelengths, with the UV escape fraction increasing from 27(18)% at z=0.18 in NUV(FUV) to 34(23)% at z=0.06. The GAMA PDR will allow for detailed studies of the energy production and outputs of individual systems, sub-populations, and representative galaxy samples at $z<0.5$. The origin of ultra-compact dwarfs (UCDs)--objects larger and more massive than typical globular clusters (GCs), but more compact than typical dwarf galaxies--has been hotly debated in the 15 years since their discovery. Even whether UCDs should be considered galactic in origin, or simply the most extreme GCs, is not yet settled. We present the dynamical properties of 97 spectroscopically confirmed UCDs (rh >~10 pc) and 911 GCs associated with central cD galaxy of the Virgo cluster, M87. Our UCDs, of which 89% have M_star > ~2X10^6 M_sun and 92% are as blue as the classic blue GCs, nearly triple the sample of previous confirmed Virgo UCDs, providing by far the best opportunity for studying the global dynamics of a UCD system. We found that (1) UCDs have a surface number density profile that is shallower than that of the blue GCs in the inner ~ 70 kpc and as steep as that of the red GCs at larger radii; (2) UCDs exhibit a significantly stronger rotation than the GCs, and the blue GCs seem to have a velocity field that is more consistent with that of the surrounding dwarf ellipticals than with that of UCDs; (3) UCDs have a radially increasing orbital anisotropy profile, and are tangentially-biased at radii < ~ 40 kpc and radially-biased further out. In contrast, the blue GCs become more tangentially-biased at larger radii beyond ~ 40 kpc; (4) GCs with M_star > 2X10^6 M_sun have rotational properties indistinguishable from the less massive ones, suggesting that it is the size, instead of mass, that differentiates UCDs from GCs as kinematically distinct populations. We conclude that most UCDs in M87 are not consistent with being merely the most luminous and extended examples of otherwise normal GCs. We use the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey to measure the local Universe mass dependent merger fraction and merger rate using galaxy pairs and the CAS structural method, which identifies highly asymmetric merger candidate galaxies. Our goals are to determine which types of mergers produce highly asymmetrical galaxies, and to provide a new measurement of the local galaxy major merger rate. We examine galaxy pairs at stellar mass limits down to $M_{*} = 10^{8}M_{\odot}$ with mass ratios of $<$100:1 and line of sight velocity differences of $\Delta V<500$ km s$^{-1}$. We find a significant increase in mean asymmetries for projected separations less than the sum of the individual galaxy's Petrosian 90 radii. For systems in major merger pairs with mass ratios of $<$4:1 both galaxies in the pair show a strong increase in asymmetry, while in minor merger systems (with mass ratios of $>$4:1) the lower mass companion becomes highly asymmetric, while the larger galaxy is much less affected. The fraction of highly asymmetric paired galaxies which have a major merger companion is highest for the most massive galaxies and drops progressively with decreasing mass. We calculate that the mass dependent major merger fraction is fairly constant at $\sim1.3-2\%$ between $10^{9.5}

We use the Gigaparsec WiggleZ (GiggleZ) simulations to characterise galaxy bias and its scale dependence for a range of redshifts and halo masses in a standard $\Lambda$LCDM cosmology. Assuming bias converges to a scale independent form at large scales, we develop a phenomenological model which fully expresses the mass and redshift dependence of bias and its scale dependence in real or redshift space. We then use this to illustrate how scale-dependent bias can systematically skew measurements of the growth-rate of cosmic structure obtained from redshift-space distortion measurements. When data is fit only to scales $k_{\rm max}{\le}0.1$ $[h^{-1} \rm{Mpc}]^{-1}$, we find that these effects are significant only for large biases ($b{\gtrsim}3$) at large redshifts ($z{\gtrsim}1$). However, when smaller scales are incorporated ($k_{\rm max}{\le}0.2$ $[h^{-1} \rm{Mpc}]^{-1}$) to increase measurement precision, the combination of reduced statistical uncertainty and increased scale dependent bias can result in highly significant systematics for most large halos across all redshifts. We identify several new interesting aspects of bias, including a significant large-scale bias boost for small halos at low-redshifts due to substructure effects ($\sim$20\% for Milky Way-like systems) and a nearly redshift-independent halo mass (corresponding to a redshift-space bias of ${\sim}1.5$) for which halo bias has little-or-no scale dependence on scales greater than $3$ $[h^{-1} {\rm Mpc}]$. This suggests an optimal strategy of targeting bias ${\sim}{1.5}$ systems for clustering studies which are dominated by systematic uncertainties in how observed halo (or galaxy) distributions map to their underlying mass distribution, such as cosmological measurements of neutrino masses. The Planck CMB experiment has delivered the best constraints so far on primordial non-Gaussianity, ruling out early-Universe models of inflation that generate large non-Gaussianity. Although small improvements in the CMB constraints are expected, the next frontier of precision will come from future large-scale surveys of the galaxy distribution. The advantage of such surveys is that they can measure many more modes than the CMB -- in particular, forthcoming radio surveys with the SKA will cover huge volumes. Radio continuum surveys deliver the largest volumes, but with the disadvantage of no redshift information. In order to mitigate this, we use two additional observables. First, the integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect -- the cross-correlation of the radio number counts with the CMB temperature anisotropies -- helps to reduce systematics on the large scales that are sensitive to non-Gaussianity. Second, optical data allows for cross-identification in order to gain some redshift information. We show that, while the single redshift bin case can provide a sigma(fNL) ~ 20, and is therefore not competitive with current and future constraints on non-Gaussianity, a tomographic analysis could improve the constraints by an order of magnitude, even with only two redshift bins. A huge improvement is provided by the addition of high-redshift sources, so having cross-ID for high-z galaxies and an even higher-z radio tail is key to enabling very precise measurements of fNL. Our results show that SKA continuum surveys could provide constraints competitive with CMB and forthcoming optical surveys, potentially allowing a measurement of sigma(fNL) ~ 1 to be made. We present a recalibration of the luminosity-metallicity relation for gas-rich, star-forming dwarfs to magnitudes as faint as M$_R$ ~ -13. We use the Dopita et al. (2013) metallicity calibrations to calibrate the relation for all of the data in this analysis. In metallicity-luminosity space we find two sub-populations within a sample of high-confidence SDSS DR8 star-forming galaxies; 52% are metal-rich giants and 48% are metal-medium galaxies. Metal-rich dwarfs classified as tidal dwarf galaxy (TDG) candidates in the literature are typically of metallicity 12 + log(O/H) = 8.70 $\pm$ 0.05, while SDSS dwarfs fainter than M$_R$ = -16 have a mean metallicity of 12 + log(O/H) = 8.28 $\pm$ 0.10, regardless of their luminosity, indicating that there is an approximate floor to the metallicity of low luminosity galaxies. Our hydrodynamical simulations predict that TDGs should have metallicities elevated above the normal luminosity-metallicity relation. Metallicity can therefore be a useful diagnostic for identifying TDG candidate populations in the absence of tidal tails. At magnitudes brighter than M$_R$ ~ -16 our sample of 53 star-forming galaxies in 9 HI gas-rich groups is consistent with the normal relation defined by the SDSS sample. At fainter magnitudes there is an increase in dispersion in metallicity of our sample, suggestive of a wide range of HI content and environment. In our sample we identify three (16% of dwarfs) strong TDG candidates (12 + log(O/H) > 8.6), and four (21%) very metal poor dwarfs (12 + log(O/H) < 8.0), which are likely gas-rich dwarfs with recently ignited star formation., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables. We present significant improvements in cosmic distance measurements from the WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey, achieved by applying the reconstruction of the baryonic acoustic feature technique. We show using both data and simulations that the reconstruction technique can often be effective despite patchiness of the survey, significant edge effects and shot-noise. We investigate three redshift bins in the redshift range 0.2<$z$<1, and in all three find improvement after reconstruction in the detection of the baryonic acoustic feature and its usage as a standard ruler. We measure model independent distance measures $D_{\mathrm V}(r_{\mathrm s}^\mathrm{fid}/r_{\mathrm s})$ of 1716 $\pm$ 83 Mpc, 2221 $\pm$ 101 Mpc, 2516 $\pm$ 86 Mpc (68% CL) at effective redshifts z = 0.44, 0.6, 0.73, respectively, where $D_{\mathrm V}$ is the volume-average-distance, and $r_{\mathrm s}$ is the sound horizon at the end of the baryon drag epoch. These significantly improved 4.8, 4.5 and 3.4 percent accuracy measurements are equivalent to those expected from surveys with up to 2.5 times the volume of WiggleZ. These measurements are fully consistent with cosmologies allowed by the analyses of the Planck Collaboration and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.We provide the $D_{\mathrm V}(r_{\mathrm s}^\mathrm{fid}/r_{\mathrm s})$ posterior probability distributions and their covariances. When combining these measurements with temperature fluctuations measurements of Planck, the polarization of WMAP9, and the 6dF Galaxy Survey baryonic acoustic feature, we do not detect deviations from a flat LCDM model. Assuming this model we constrain the current expansion rate to $H_0$ = 67.15 $\pm$ 0.98 kms$^{-1}$Mpc$^{-1}$. Allowing the equation of state of dark energy to vary we obtain $w_\mathrm{DE}$ = -1.080 $\pm$ 0.135. When assuming a curved LCDM model we obtain a curvature value of $\Omega_{\mathrm K}$ = -0.0043 $\pm$ 0.0047., Comment: 20 double column pages, 10 figures, 5 tables

We present the ultraviolet (UV) luminosity function of galaxies from the GALEX Medium Imaging Survey with measured spectroscopic redshifts from the first data release of the WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey. This sample selects galaxies with high star formation rates: at 0.6 < z < 0.9 the median star formation rate is at the upper 95th percentile of optically-selected (r<22.5) galaxies and the sample contains about 50 per cent of all NUV < 22.8, 0.6 < z < 0.9 starburst galaxies within the volume sampled. The most luminous galaxies in our sample (-21.0>M_NUV>-22.5) evolve very rapidly with a number density declining as (1+z)^{5\pm 1} from redshift z = 0.9 to z = 0.6. These starburst galaxies (M_NUV<-21 is approximately a star formation rate of 30 \msuny) contribute about 1 per cent of cosmic star formation over the redshift range z=0.6 to z=0.9. The star formation rate density of these very luminous galaxies evolves rapidly, as (1+z)^{4\pm 1}. Such a rapid evolution implies the majority of star formation in these large galaxies must have occurred before z = 0.9. We measure the UV luminosity function in 0.05 redshift intervals spanning 0.1

H{\alpha} observations centred on galaxies selected from the HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS, Barnes et al. 2001) typically show one and sometimes two star-forming galaxies within the approximately 15-arcminute beam of the Parkes 64-m HI detections. In our Survey of Ionization in Neutral Gas Galaxies (SINGG, Meurer et al. 2006) we found fifteen cases of HIPASS sources containing four or more emission line galaxies (ELGs). We name these fields Choir groups. In the most extreme case we found a field with at least nine ELGs. In this paper we present a catalogue of Choir group members in the context of the wider SINGG sample. The dwarf galaxies in the Choir groups would not be individually detectable in HIPASS at the observed distances if they were isolated, but are detected in SINGG narrow-band imaging due to their membership of groups with sufficiently large total HI mass. The ELGs in these groups are similar to the wider SINGG sample in terms of size, H{\alpha} equivalent width, and surface brightness. Eight of these groups have two large spiral galaxies with several dwarf galaxies and may be thought of as morphological analogues of the Local Group. However, on average our groups are not significantly HI-deficient, suggesting that they are at an early stage of assembly, and more like the M81 group. The Choir groups are very compact at typically only 190 kpc in projected distance between the two brightest members. They are very similar to SINGG fields in terms of star formation efficiency (the ratio of star formation rate to HI mass; SFE), showing an increasing trend in SFE with stellar mass., Comment: To be published in MNRAS. 21 pages, 27 figures

Higher-order statistics are a useful and complementary tool for measuring the clustering of galaxies, containing information on the non-gaussian evolution and morphology of large-scale structure in the Universe. In this work we present measurements of the three-point correlation function (3PCF) for 187,000 galaxies in the WiggleZ spectroscopic galaxy survey. We explore the WiggleZ 3PCF scale and shape dependence at three different epochs z=0.35, 0.55 and 0.68, the highest redshifts where these measurements have been made to date. Using N-body simulations to predict the clustering of dark matter, we constrain the linear and non-linear bias parameters of WiggleZ galaxies with respect to dark matter, and marginalise over them to obtain constraints on sigma_8(z), the variance of perturbations on a scale of 8 Mpc/h and its evolution with redshift. These measurements of sigma_8(z), which have 10-20% accuracies, are consistent with the predictions of the LCDM concordance cosmology and test this model in a new way., Comment: MNRAS Accepted, 16 pages, 18 figures

The growth history of large-scale structure in the Universe is a powerful probe of the cosmological model, including the nature of dark energy. We study the growth rate of cosmic structure to redshift $z = 0.9$ using more than $162{,}000$ galaxy redshifts from the WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey. We divide the data into four redshift slices with effective redshifts $z = [0.2,0.4,0.6,0.76]$ and in each of the samples measure and model the 2-point galaxy correlation function in parallel and transverse directions to the line-of-sight. After simultaneously fitting for the galaxy bias factor we recover values for the cosmic growth rate which are consistent with our assumed $\Lambda$CDM input cosmological model, with an accuracy of around 20% in each redshift slice. We investigate the sensitivity of our results to the details of the assumed model and the range of physical scales fitted, making close comparison with a set of N-body simulations for calibration. Our measurements are consistent with an independent power-spectrum analysis of a similar dataset, demonstrating that the results are not driven by systematic errors. We determine the pairwise velocity dispersion of the sample in a non-parametric manner, showing that it systematically increases with decreasing redshift, and investigate the Alcock-Paczynski effects of changing the assumed fiducial model on the results. We characterise the stellar masses and star formation rates in a sample of almost 40000 spectroscopically confirmed UV luminous galaxies at 0.35sigma in the UKIDSS-LAS at all redshifts. An even more luminous subset of 15% are also detected in the WISE 3.4 and 4.6um bands. We compute stellar masses for this very large sample of extremely blue galaxies and quantify the sensitivity of the stellar mass estimates to various assumptions made during the SED fitting. The median stellar masses are log10(M*/M0)=9.6\pm0.7, 10.2\pm0.5 and 10.4\pm0.4 for the IR-undetected, UKIDSS detected and UKIDSS+WISE detected galaxies respectively. We demonstrate that the inclusion of NIR photometry can lead to tighter constraints on the stellar masses. The mass estimates are found to be most sensitive to the inclusion of secondary bursts of star formation as well as changes in the stellar population synthesis models, both of which can lead to median discrepancies of the order of 0.3dex in the stellar masses. We find that the best-fit M/LK is significantly lower (by ~0.4 dex) than that predicted by simple optical colour based estimators, in particular for the bluer galaxies with younger best-fit ages. The WiggleZ galaxies have star formation rates of 3-10 M0/yr and mostly lie at the upper end of the main sequence of star-forming galaxies at these redshifts. The rich statistics of galaxy rotations as captured by the velocity function (VF) provides invaluable constraints on galactic baryon physics and the nature of dark matter (DM). However, the comparison of observed galaxy rotations against cosmological models is prone to subtle caveats that can easily lead to misinterpretations. Our analysis reveals full statistical consistency between ~5000 galaxy rotations, observed in line-of-sight projection, and predictions based on the standard cosmological model (LCDM) at the mass-resolution of the Millennium simulation (HI line-based circular velocities above ~50 km/s). Explicitly, the HI linewidths in the HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS) are found consistent with those in S3-SAX, a post-processed semi-analytic model for the Millennium simulation. Previously found anomalies in the VF can be plausibly attributed to (1) the mass-limit of the Millennium simulation, (2) confused sources in HIPASS, (3) inaccurate inclination measurements for optically faint sources, and (4) the non-detectability of gas-poor early-type galaxies. These issues can be bypassed by comparing observations and models using linewidth source counts rather than VFs. We place the most robust constraint to date on the scale of the turnover in the cosmological matter power spectrum using data from the WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey. We find this feature to lie at a scale of $k_0=0.0160^{+0.0041}_{-0.0035}$ [h/Mpc] (68% confidence) for an effective redshift of 0.62 and obtain from this the first-ever turnover-derived distance and cosmology constraints: a measure of the cosmic distance-redshift relation in units of the horizon scale at the redshift of radiation-matter equality (r_H) of D_V(z=0.62)/r_H=18.3 (+6.3/-3.3) and, assuming a prior on the number of extra relativistic degrees of freedom $N_{eff}=3$, constraints on the matter density parameter $\Omega_Mh^2=0.136^{+0.026}_{-0.052}$ and on the redshift of matter-radiation equality $z_{eq}=3274^{+631}_{-1260}$. All results are in excellent agreement with the predictions of standard LCDM models. Our constraints on the logarithmic slope of the power spectrum on scales larger than the turnover is bounded in the lower limit with values only as low as -1 allowed, with the prediction of standard LCDM models easily accommodated by our results. Lastly, we generate forecasts for the achievable precision of future surveys at constraining $k_0$, $\Omega_Mh^2$, $z_{eq}$ and $N_{eff}$. We find that BOSS should substantially improve upon the WiggleZ turnover constraint, reaching a precision on $k_0$ of $\pm$9% (68% confidence), translating to precisions on $\Omega_Mh^2$ and $z_{eq}$ of $\pm$10% (assuming a prior $N_{eff}=3$) and on $N_{eff}$ of (+78/-56)% (assuming a prior $\Omega_Mh^2=0.135$). This is sufficient precision to sharpen the constraints on $N_{eff}$ from WMAP, particularly in its upper limit. For Euclid, we find corresponding attainable precisions on $(k_0, \Omega_Mh^2, N_eff)$ of (3,4,+17/-21)%. This paper presents cosmological results from the final data release of the WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey. We perform full analyses of different cosmological models using the WiggleZ power spectra measured at z=0.22, 0.41, 0.60, and 0.78, combined with other cosmological datasets. The limiting factor in this analysis is the theoretical modelling of the galaxy power spectrum, including non-linearities, galaxy bias, and redshift-space distortions. In this paper we assess several different methods for modelling the theoretical power spectrum, testing them against the Gigaparsec WiggleZ simulations (GiggleZ). We fit for a base set of 6 cosmological parameters, {Omega_b h^2, Omega_CDM h^2, H_0, tau, A_s, n_s}, and 5 supplementary parameters {n_run, r, w, Omega_k, sum m_nu}. In combination with the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), our results are consistent with the LambdaCDM concordance cosmology, with a measurement of the matter density of Omega_m =0.29 +/- 0.016 and amplitude of fluctuations sigma_8 = 0.825 +/- 0.017. Using WiggleZ data with CMB and other distance and matter power spectra data, we find no evidence for any of the extension parameters being inconsistent with their LambdaCDM model values. We have made the largest-volume measurement to date of the transition to large-scale homogeneity in the distribution of galaxies. We use the WiggleZ survey, a spectroscopic survey of over 200,000 blue galaxies in a cosmic volume of ~1 (Gpc/h)^3. A new method of defining the 'homogeneity scale' is presented, which is more robust than methods previously used in the literature, and which can be easily compared between different surveys. Due to the large cosmic depth of WiggleZ (up to z=1) we are able to make the first measurement of the transition to homogeneity over a range of cosmic epochs. The mean number of galaxies N(

We perform a joint determination of the distance-redshift relation and cosmic expansion rate at redshifts z = 0.44, 0.6 and 0.73 by combining measurements of the baryon acoustic peak and Alcock-Paczynski distortion from galaxy clustering in the WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey, using a large ensemble of mock catalogues to calculate the covariance between the measurements. We find that D_A(z) = (1205 +/- 114, 1380 +/- 95, 1534 +/- 107) Mpc and H(z) = (82.6 +/- 7.8, 87.9 +/- 6.1, 97.3 +/- 7.0) km/s/Mpc at these three redshifts. Further combining our results with other baryon acoustic oscillation and distant supernovae datasets, we use a Monte Carlo Markov Chain technique to determine the evolution of the Hubble parameter H(z) as a stepwise function in 9 redshift bins of width dz = 0.1, also marginalizing over the spatial curvature. Our measurements of H(z), which have precision better than 7% in most redshift bins, are consistent with the expansion history predicted by a cosmological-constant dark-energy model, in which the expansion rate accelerates at redshift z < 0.7., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS
