Abstract

In the recent years, telecom and computer networks have witnessed new concepts and technologies through Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Software-Defined Networking (SDN). SDN, which allows applications to have a control over the network, and NFV, which allows deploying network functions in virtualized environments, are two paradigms that are increasingly used for the Internet of Things (IoT). This Internet (IoT) brings the promise to interconnect billions of devices in the next few years rises several scientific challenges in particular those of the satisfaction of the quality of service (QoS) required by the IoT applications. In order to address this problem, we have identified two bottlenecks with respect to the QoS: the traversed networks and the intermediate entities that allows the application to interact with the IoT devices. In this paper, we first present an innovative vision of a "network function" with respect to their deployment and runtime environment. Then, we describe our general approach of a solution that consists in the dynamic, autonomous, and seamless deployment of QoS management mechanisms. We also describe the requirements for the implementation of such approach. Finally, we present a redirection mechanism, implemented as a network function, allowing the seamless control of the data path of a given middleware traffic. This mechanism is assessed through a use case related to vehicular transportation.

2. Capturing the contributions of the semantic web to the IoT: a unifying vision

Abstract

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a technological topic with a very important societal impact. IoT application domains are various and include: smart cities, precision farming, smart factories, and smart buildings. The diversity of these application domains is the source of the very high technological heterogeneity in the IoT, leading to interoperability issues. The semantic web principles and technologies are more and more adopted as a solution to these interoperability issues, leading to the emergence of a new domain, the Semantic Web Of Things (SWoT). Scientific contributions to the SWoT are many, and the diversity of architectures in which they are expressed complicates comparison. To unify the presented architectures, we propose an architectural pattern, LMU-N. LMU-N provides a reading grid used to classify processes to which the SWoT community contributes, and to describe how the semantic web impacts the IoT. Then, the evolutions of the semantic web to adapt to the IoT constraints are described as well, in order to give a twofold view of the convergence between the IoT and the semantic web toward the SWoT., Comment: 23 pages, 5 tables, 3 figures, submission to the Semantic Web Journal (Internet of Things special issue) and subject of an extended abstract to the SWIT2017 (https://swit2017.github.io/) workshop

Abstract

The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) released a set of specifications to define a restful architecture for enabling seamless service provisioning across heterogeneous Machine-to-Machine (M2M) systems. The current version of this architecture is strongly centralized, thus requiring new enhancements to its scalability, fault tolerance, and flexibility. To bridge this gap, herein it is presented an Overlay Service Capability Layer, based on Information Centric Networking design. Key features, example use cases and preliminary performance assessments are also discussed to highlight the potential of our approach.

Abstract

This paper aims at designing of adaptive framework for supporting collaborative work of different actors in public safety and disaster recovery missions. In such scenarios, firemen and robots interact to each other to reach a common goal; firemen team is equipped with smart devices and robots team is supplied with communication technologies, and should carry on specific tasks. Here, reliable connection is mandatory to ensure the interaction between actors. But wireless access network and communication resources are vulnerable in the event of a sudden unexpected change in the environment. Also, the continuous change in the mission requirements such as inclusion/exclusion of new actor, changing the actor's priority and the limitations of smart devices need to be monitored. To perform dynamically in such case, the presented framework is based on a generic multi-level modeling approach that ensures adaptation handled by semantic modeling. Automated self-configuration is driven by rule-based reconfiguration policies through ontology.

15. Context-aware adaptation for group communication support applications with dynamic architecture

Abstract

In this paper, we propose a refinement-based adaptation approach for the architecture of distributed group communication support applications. Unlike most of previous works, our approach reaches implementable, context-aware and dynamically adaptable architectures. To model the context, we manage simultaneously four parameters that influence Qos provided by the application. These parameters are: the available bandwidth, the exchanged data communication priority, the energy level and the available memory for processing. These parameters make it possible to refine the choice between the various architectural configurations when passing from a given abstraction level to the lower level which implements it. Our approach allows the importance degree associated with each parameter to be adapted dynamically. To implement adaptation, we switch between the various configurations of the same level, and we modify the state of the entities of a given configuration when necessary. We adopt the direct and mediated Producer- Consumer architectural styles and graphs for architecture modelling. In order to validate our approach we elaborate a simulation model.

Abstract

International audience; Under the Network Function Virtualization multidomain orchestration approach, many service providers jointly manage the lifecycle of network services composed by Virtual Network Functions (VNFs). Many orchestration algorithms have been published focusing on different tasks for the lifecycle of network services. Nowadays, some general-purpose and architectural orchestration surveys have been published. However, currently, no survey classifies and evaluates distributed multidomain orchestration algorithms. In this paper, we focus on multi-domain orchestration works from an algorithm perspective by considering the cooperative and competitive approaches. Algorithms are classified and evaluated. We propose a taxonomy for works that consider different lifecycle tasks of network services. Classification and evaluation are done by identifying key requirements present in competitive and cooperative scenarios. This allows us to have a perspective on the current state of multi-domain orchestration algorithms. We also identify future research directions based on such a current perspective.
