12. Supramolecular ionic polymer/carbon nanotube composite hydrogels with enhanced electromechanical performance

Abstract

Electroactive hydrogels have received increasing attention due to the possibility of being used in biomimetics, such as for soft robotics and artificial muscles. However, the applications are hindered by the poor mechanical properties and slow response time. To address these issues, in this study, supramolecular ionic polymer–carbon nanotube (SIPC) composite hydrogels were fabricated via in situ free radical polymerization. The polymer matrix consisted of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), styrene sulfonic sodium (SSNa), β-cyclodextrin (β-CD)-grafted acrylamide, and ferrocene (Fc)-grafted acrylamide, with the incorporation of SSNa serving as the ionic source. On applying an external voltage, the ions accumulate on one side of the matrix, leading to localized swelling and bending of the structure. Therefore, a controllable and reversible actuation can be achieved by changing the applied voltage. The tensile strength of the SIPC was improved by over 300%, from 12 to 49 kPa, due to the reinforcement effect of the CNTs and the supramolecular host–guest interactions between the β-CD and Fc moieties. The inclusion of CNTs not only improved the tensile properties but also enhanced the ion mobility, which lead to a faster electromechanical response. The presented electro-responsive composite hydrogel shows a high potential for the development of robotic devices and soft smart components for sensing and actuating applications.

22. Enhancement Effect of the C60Derivative on the Thermoelectric Properties of n-Type Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube-Based Films

Abstract

Obtaining air-stable and high-performance flexible n-type single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT)-based thermoelectric films used in wearable electronic devices is a challenge. In this work, the microstructure and thermoelectric properties of n-type SWCNT-based films have been optimized via doping C60and its derivative into polyethylenimine/single-walled carbon nanotube (PEI/SWCNT) films. The result demonstrated that the dispersity of triethylene glycol-modified C60(TEG-C60) was better in PEI/SWCNT films than that of pure C60. Among the prepared composite films, TEG-C60-doped PEI/SWCNT (TEG-C60/PEI/SWCNT) films exhibited the highest TE performance, achieving a peak electrical conductivity of 923 S cm–1with a Seebeck coefficient of −42 μV K–1at a TEG-C60/SWCNT mass ratio of 1:100. Compared to that of PEI/SWCNT, the power factor was increased significantly from 40 to 162 μW m–1K–2after the addition of TEG-C60, which was higher than that of films after the addition of C60. In addition, the n-type doped SWCNT films had good air stability at high temperatures, and the Seebeck coefficients of C60/PEI/SWCNT and TEG-C60/PEI/SWCNT at 120 °C were still negative and remained at 92% and 85%, respectively, after 20 days. Furthermore, a flexible TE device consisting of five pairs of p–n junctions was assembled using the optimum hybrid film, which generated a maximum output power of 3.6 μW at a temperature gradient of 50.2 K. Therefore, this study provides a facile way to enhance the thermoelectric properties of n-type carbon nanotube-based materials, which have potential application in flexible power generators.

Abstract

Specimens of acidic multi-walled carbon nanotubes (AMWNTs) reinforced polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanocomposites (AMWNTs-PVA) were prepared using different amounts of AMWNTs by the traditional solution casting, involving ultrasonic wave agitation. The microstructures and tensile properties of AMWNTs-PVA were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, dynamic mechanical analysis, and quasi-static tensile testing. AMWNTs had good compatibility with PVA and dispersed evenly in the PVA matrix. The incorporation of AMWNTs improved the tensile modulus and strength of the PVA. The shape recovery testing revealed the shape recovery capacity of AMWNTs-PVA. It was observed that the recovery ratio increased, and the shape recovery rate slightly decrease with the increase of AMWNTs content. The results showed that the AMWNTs had strong interaction with the segments of the PVA and hence affected the shape recovery behavior of PVA. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Abstract

Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were oxidized by concentrate HNO3 and then reacted with SOCl2 to form MWCNT-COCl. Water-soluble sodium p-aminobenzenesulfonate-grafted multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-CO-NHC6H5SO3Na) were synthesized by an amidation reaction of sodium p-aminobenzenesulfonate with MWCNT-COCl, which was verified by FT-IR spectroscopy. The content of the sodium p-aminobenzenesulfonate grafted onto the MWCNT surface reached 29.9 mass%. The MWCNT-CO-NHC6H5SO3Na showed a good solubility and dispersion in water, and had an improved adsorptive performance for the removal of low concentrations of Cu2+in water. The adsorption isotherms of the MWCNT-CO-NHC6H5SO3Na for Cu2+ can be well fitted by the Freundlich equation. [New Carbon Materials 2013, 28(1): 14–19] [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
