Search

Critical fluctuations play a fundamental role in determining the spin orders for low-dimensional quantum materials, especially for recently discovered two-dimensional (2D) magnets. Here we employ the quantum decoherence imaging technique utilizing nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond to explore the critical magnetic fluctuations and the associated temporal spin noise in van der Waals magnet $\rm{Fe_{3}GeTe_{2}}$. We show that the critical fluctuation contributes to a random magnetic field characterized by the noise spectra, which can be changed dramatically near the critical temperature $T_c$. A theoretical model to describe this phenomenon is developed, showing that the spectral density is characterized by a $1/f$ noise near the $T_c$, while away from this point it behaves like a white noise. The crossover at a certain temperature between these two situations is determined by changing of the distance between the sample and the diamond. This work provides a new way to study critical fluctuation and to extract some of the critical exponents, which may greatly deepen our understanding of criticality in a wide range of physical systems.

Universality often emerges in low-energy equilibrium physics of quantum many-body systems, despite their microscopic complexity and variety. Recently, there has been a growing interest in studying far-from-equilibrium dynamics of quantum many-body systems. Such dynamics usually involves highly excited states beyond the traditional low-energy theory description. Whether universal behaviors can also emerge in such non-equilibrium dynamics is a central issue at the frontier of quantum dynamics. Here we report the experimental observation of universal dynamics by monitoring the spin depolarization process in a solid-state NMR system described by an ensemble of randomly interacting spins. The spin depolarization can be related to temporal spin-spin correlation functions at high temperatures. We discover a remarkable phenomenon that these correlation functions obey a universal functional form. This experimental fact helps us identify the dominant interacting processes in the spin depolarization dynamics that lead to this universality. The nature of dark energy is one of the most outstanding problems in physical science, and various theories have been proposed. It is therefore essential to directly verify or rule out these theories experimentally. However, despite substantial efforts in astrophysical observations and laboratory experiments, previous tests have not yet acquired enough accuracy to provide decisive conclusions as to the validity of these theories. Here, using a diamagnetically levitated force sensor, we carry out a test on one of the most compelling explanations for dark energy to date, namely the Chameleon theory, an ultra-light scalar field with screening mechanisms, which couples to normal-matter fields and leaves a detectable fifth force. Our results extend previous results by nearly two orders of magnitude to the entire physical plausible parameter space of cosmologically viable chameleon models. We find no evidence for such a fifth force. Our results decisively rule out the basic chameleon model as a candidate for dark energy. Our work, thus, demonstrates the robustness of laboratory experiments in unveiling the nature of dark energy in the future. The methodology developed here can be further applied to study a broad range of fundamental physics.

Quantum friction, a quantum analog of classical friction, reduces the performance of quantum machines, such as heat engines, and makes them less energy efficient. We here report the experimental realization of an energy efficient quantum engine coupled to a quantum battery that stores the produced work, using a single ion in a linear Paul trap. We first establish the quantum nature of the device by observing nonclassical work oscillations with the number of cycles as verified by energy measurements of the battery. We moreover successfully apply shortcut-to-adiabaticity techniques to suppress quantum friction and improve work production. While the average energy cost of the shortcut protocol is only about $3\%$, the work output is enhanced by up to approximately 33$\%$, making the machine significantly more energy efficient. In addition, we show that the quantum engine consistently outperforms its classical counterpart in this regime. Our results pave the way for energy efficient machines with quantum-enhanced performance.

We report new experimental results on the search for dark photons based on a near-quantum-limited haloscope equipped with a superconducting cavity. The loaded quality factor of the superconducting cavity is $6\times10^{5}$, so that the expected signal from dark photon dark matter can be enhanced by more than one order compared to a copper cavity. A Josephson parametric amplifier with a near-quantum-limited noise temperature has been utilized to minimize the noise during the search. Furthermore, a digital acquisition card based on field programmable gate arrays has been utilized to maximize data collection efficiency with a duty cycle being 100$\%$. This work has established the most stringent constraints on dark photons at around 26.965 $\mu$eV. In the future, our apparatus can be extended to search for other dark matter candidates, such as axions and axion-like particles, and scrutinize new physics beyond the Standard Model.

We report new experimental results on exotic spin-spin-velocity-dependent interactions between electron spins. We designed an elaborate setup that is equipped with two nitrogen-vacancy (NV) ensembles in diamonds. One of the NV ensembles serves as the spin source, while the other functions as the spin sensor. By coherently manipulating the quantum states of two NV ensembles and their relative velocity at the micrometer scale, we are able to scrutinize exotic spin-spin-velocity-dependent interactions at short force ranges. For a T-violating interaction, $V_6$, new limits on the corresponding coupling coefficient, $f_6$, have been established for the force range shorter than 1 cm. For a P,T-violating interaction, $V_{14}$, new constraints on the corresponding coupling coefficient, $f_{14}$, have been obtained for the force range shorter than 1 km.

The precise measurement of the gravity of the earth plays a pivotal role in various fundamental research and application fields. Although a few gravimeters have been reported to achieve this goal, miniaturization of high-precision gravimetry remains a challenge. In this work, we have proposed and demonstrated a miniaturized gravimetry operating at room temperature based on a diamagnetic levitated micro-oscillator with a proof mass of only 215 mg. Compared with the latest reported miniaturized gravimeters based on Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems, the performance of our gravimetry has substantial improvements in that an acceleration sensitivity of 15 $\mu Gal/\sqrt{Hz}$ and a drift as low as 61 $\mu Gal$ per day have been reached. Based on this diamagnetic levitation gravimetry, we observed the earth tides, and the correlation coefficient between the experimental data and theoretical data reached 0.97. Some moderate foreseeable improvements can develop this diamagnetic levitation gravimetry into chip size device, making it suitable for mobile platforms such as drones. We experimentally test the Crooks fluctuation theorem in a quantum spin system. Our results show that the Crooks fluctuation theorem is valid for different speeds of the nonequilibrium processes and under various effective temperatures. Work is not an observable in quantum systems, which makes tests of quantum thermodynamic theorems challenging. In this work, we developed high-fidelity single-shot readouts of a single nuclear spin in diamond and implemented the two-point work measurement protocol, enabling a direct experimental test of the Crooks fluctuation theorem. Our results provide a quantum insight into fluctuations and the methods we developed can be utilized to study other quantum thermodynamic theorems.

Developing superior quantum sensing strategies ranging from ultra-high precision measurement to complex structural analysis is at the heart of quantum technologies. While strategies using quantum resources, such as entanglement among sensors, to enhance the sensing precision have been abundantly demonstrated, the signal correlation among quantum sensors is rarely exploited. Here we develop a novel sensing paradigm exploiting the signal correlation among multiple quantum sensors to resolve overlapping signals from multiple targets that individual sensors can't resolve and complex structural construction struggles with. With three nitrogen-vacancy centers as a quantum electrometer system, we demonstrate this multi-sensor paradigm by resolving individual defects' fluctuating electric fields from ensemble signals. We image the three-dimensional distribution of 16 dark electronic point-defects in diamond with accuracy approaching 1.7 nm via a GPS-like localization method. Furthermore, we obtain the real-time charge dynamics of individual point defects and visualize how the dynamics induce the well-known optical spectral diffusion. The multi-sensor paradigm extends the quantum sensing toolbox and offers new possibilities for structural analysis.

Squeezing a quantum state along a specific direction has long been recognized as a crucial technique for enhancing the precision of quantum metrology by reducing parameter uncertainty. However, practical quantum metrology often involves the simultaneous estimation of multiple parameters, necessitating the use of high-quality squeezed states along multiple orthogonal axes to surpass the standard quantum limit for all relevant parameters. In addition, a temporally stabilized squeezed state can provide an event-ready probe for parameters, regardless of the initial state, and robust to the timing of the state preparation process once stabilized. In this work, we generate and stabilize a two-mode squeezed state along two secular motional modes in a vibrating trapped ion with reservoir engineering, despite starting from a thermal state of the motion. Leveraging this resource, we demonstrate an estimation of two simultaneous collective displacements along the squeezed axes, achieving improvements surpassing the classical limit by up to 6.9(3) and 7.0(3) decibels (dB), respectively. Our demonstration can be readily scaled to squeezed states with even more modes. The practical implications of our findings span a wide range of applications, including quantum sensing, quantum imaging, and various fields that demand precise measurements of multiple parameters.

The non-Hermiticity of the system gives rise to distinct knot topology that has no Hermitian counterpart. Here, we report a comprehensive study of the knot topology in gapped non-Hermitian systems based on the universal dilation method with a long coherence time nitrogen-vacancy center in a $^{\text{12}}$C isotope purified diamond. Both the braiding patterns of energy bands and the eigenstate topology are revealed. Furthermore, the global biorthogonal Berry phase related to the eigenstate topology has been successfully observed, which identifies the topological invariance for the non-Hermitian system. Our method paves the way for further exploration of the interplay among band braiding, eigenstate topology and symmetries in non-Hermitian quantum systems.

The Jarzynski equality (JE), which connects the equilibrium free energy with non-equilibrium work statistics, plays a crucial role in quantum thermodynamics. Although practical quantum systems are usually multi-level systems, most tests of the JE were executed in two-level systems. A rigorous test of the JE by directly measuring the work distribution of a physical process in a high-dimensional quantum system remains elusive. Here, we report an experimental test of the JE in a single spin-1 system. We realized nondemolition projective measurement of this three-level system via cascading high-fidelity single-shot readouts and directly measured the work distribution utilizing the two-point measurement protocol. The validity of the JE was verified from the non-adiabatic to adiabatic zone and under different effective temperatures. Our work puts the JE on a solid experimental foundation and makes the NV center system a mature toolbox to perform advanced experiments of stochastic quantum thermodynamics.

The central quantity in the celebrated quantum Jarzynski equality is $e^{-\beta W}$, where $W$ is work and $\beta$ is the inverse temperature. The impact of quantum randomness on the fluctuations of $e^{-\beta W}$ and hence on the predictive power of the Jarzynski estimator is an important problem. Working on a single nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond and riding on an implementation of two-point measurement of non-equilibrium work with single-shot readout, we have conducted a direct experimental investigation of the relationship between the fluctuations of $e^{-\beta W}$ and adiabaticity of non-equilibrium work protocols. It is observed that adiabatic processes minimize the variance of $e^{-\beta W}$, thus verifying an early theoretical concept, the so-called principle of minimal work fluctuations. Furthermore, it is experimentally demonstrated that shortcuts-to-adiabaticity control can be exploited to minimize the variance of $e^{-\beta W}$ in fast work protocols. Our work should stimulate further experimental studies of quantum effects on the bias and error in the estimates of free energy differences based on the Jarzynski equality.

Herein, we propose a novel strategy for implementing a direct readout of the symmetric characteristic function of the quantum states of quantum fields without the involvement of idealized measurements, an aspect that has always been deemed ill-defined in quantum field theory. This proposed scheme relies on the quantum control and measurements of an auxiliary qubit locally coupled to the quantum fields. By mapping the expectation values of both the real and imaginary parts of the field displacement operator to the qubit states, the qubit's readout provides complete information regarding the symmetric characteristic function. We characterize our technique by applying it to the Kubo-Martin-Schwinger (thermal) and squeezed states of a quantum scalar field. In addition, we have discussed general applications of this approach to analogue-gravity systems, such as Bose-Einstein condensates, within the scope of state-of-the-art experimental capabilities. This proposed strategy may serve as an essential in understanding and optimizing the control of quantum fields for relativistic quantum information applications, particularly in exploring the interplay between gravity and quantum, for example, the relation to locality, causality, and information., Comment: 9+4 pages, 3 figures

Searching for exotic interactions provides a path for exploring new particles beyond the standard model. Here, we used an ensemble-NV-diamond magnetometer to search for an exotic spin- and velocity-dependent interaction between polarized electron spins and unpolarized nucleons at the micrometer scale. A thin layer of nitrogen-vacancy electronic spin ensemble in diamond is utilized as both the solid-state spin quantum sensor and the polarized electron source, and a vibrating lead sphere serves as the moving unpolarized nucleon source. The exotic interaction is searched by detecting the possible effective magnetic field induced by the moving unpolarized nucleon source using the ensemble-NV-diamond magnetometer. Our result establishes new bounds for the coupling parameter $f_\perp$ within the force range from 5 to 400 $\rm \mu$m. The upper limit of the coupling parameter at 100 $\rm \mu$m is $\lvert f_\perp \rvert \leq 1.1\times 10^{-11}$, which is 3 orders of magnitude more stringent than the previous constraint. This result shows that NV ensemble can be a promising platform to search for hypothetical particles beyond the standard model.

An ultimate goal of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy is to analyze molecular dynamics in place where it occurs, such as in a living cell. The nanodiamond (ND) hosting nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers will be a promising EPR sensor to achieve this goal. However, ND-based EPR spectroscopy remains elusive, due to the challenge of controlling NV centers without well-defined orientations inside a flexible ND. Here, we show a generalized zero-field EPR technique with spectra robust to the sensor's orientation. The key is applying an amplitude modulation on the control field, which generates a series of equidistant Floquet states with energy splitting being the orientation-independent modulation frequency. We acquire the zero-field EPR spectrum of vanadyl ions in aqueous glycerol solution with embedded single NDs, paving the way towards \emph{in vivo} EPR.

Among several dark matter candidates, bosonic ultralight (sub meV) dark matter is well motivated because it could couple to the Standard Model (SM) and induce new forces. Previous MICROSCOPE and Eot Wash torsion experiments have achieved high accuracy in the sub-1 Hz region, but at higher frequencies there is still a lack of relevant experimental research. We propose an experimental scheme based on the diamagnetic levitated micromechanical oscillator, one of the most sensitive sensors for acceleration sensitivity below the kilohertz scale. In order to improve the measurement range, we used the sensor whose resonance frequency could be adjusted from 0.1Hz to 100Hz. The limits of the coupling constant are improved by more than 10 times compared to previous reports, and it may be possible to achieve higher accuracy by using the array of sensors in the future.

Here we propose and demonstrate a phased geometric control protocol for zero-field double quantum gates in a V-shaped three-level spin system. This method utilizes linearly polarized microwave pulses and exploits the geometric qubit properties to prevent state leakage. By employing specific phased geometric controls, we realize a low-power multi-pulse zero-field sensing technique using single nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond. Our method offers a novel approach to implement precise double quantum gate operations with an adaptable driving power, making it a valuable tool for zero-field spin-based quantum technology.

High-pressure diamond anvil cells have been widely used to create novel states of matter. Nevertheless, the lack of universal in-situ magnetic measurement techniques at megabar pressures makes it difficult to understand the underlying physics of materials' behavior at extreme conditions, such as high-temperature superconductivity of hydrides and the formation or destruction of the local magnetic moments in magnetic systems, etc. Here we break through the limitations of pressure on quantum sensors and develop the in-situ magnetic detection technique at megabar pressures with high sensitivity (~1{\mu}T/Hz^(1\2)) and sub-microscale spatial resolution. By directly imaging the magnetic field and the evolution of magnetic domains, we observe the macroscopic magnetic transition of Fe3O4 in the megabar pressure range from strong ferromagnetism ({\alpha}-Fe3O4) to weak ferromagnetism ({\beta}-Fe3O4) and finally to non-magnetism ({\gamma}-Fe3O4). The scenarios for magnetic changes in Fe3O4 characterized here shed light on the direct magnetic microstructure observation in bulk materials at high pressure and contribute to understanding the mechanism of magnetic moment suppression related to spin crossover. The presented method can potentially investigate the spin-orbital coupling and magnetism-superconductivity competition in magnetic systems.

Interfacial interactions are crucial in a variety of fields and can greatly affect the electric, magnetic, and chemical properties of materials. Among them, interface orbital hybridization plays a fundamental role in the properties of surface electrons such as dispersion, interaction, and ground states. Conventional measurements of electronic states at interfaces such as scanning tunneling microscopes are all based on electric interactions which, however, suffer from strong perturbation on these electrons. Here we unveil a new experimental detection of interface electrons based on the weak magnetic interactions between them and the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond. With negligible perturbation on the interface electrons, their physical properties can be revealed by the NV spin coherence time. In our system, the interface interaction leads to significant decreases in both the density and coherence time of the electron spins at the diamond-graphene interface. Furthermore, together with electron spin resonance spectra and first-principle calculations, we can retrieve the effect of interface electron orbital hybridization. Our study opens a new pathway toward the microscopic probing of interfacial electronic states with weak magnetic interactions and provides a new avenue for future research on material interfaces.

Ultralight dark photons constitute a well-motivated candidate for dark matter. A coherent electromagnetic wave is expected to be induced by dark photons when coupled with Standard-Model photons through kinetic mixing mechanism, and should be spatially correlated within the de Broglie wavelength of dark photons. Here we report the first search for correlated dark-photon signals using a long-baseline network of 15 atomic magnetometers, which are situated in two separated meter-scale shield rooms with a distance of about 1700 km. Both the network's multiple sensors and the shields large size significantly enhance the expected dark-photon electromagnetic signals, and long-baseline measurements confidently reduce many local noise sources. Using this network, we constrain the kinetic mixing coefficient of dark photon dark matter over the mass range 4.1 feV-2.1 peV, which represents the most stringent constraints derived from any terrestrial experiments operating over the aforementioned mass range. Revealing the properties of single spin defects in solids is essential for quantum applications based on solid-state systems. However, it is intractable to investigate the temperature-dependent properties of single defects, due to the low precision for single-defect measurements in contrast to defect ensembles. Here we report that the temperature dependence of the Hamiltonian parameters for single negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV$^{-}$) centers in diamond is precisely measured, and the results find a reasonable agreement with first-principles calculations. Particularly, the hyperfine interactions with randomly distributed $^{13}$C nuclear spins are clearly observed to vary with temperature, and the relevant coefficients are measured with Hz-level precision. The temperature-dependent behaviors are attributed to both thermal expansion and lattice vibrations by first-principles calculations. Our results pave the way for taking nuclear spins as more stable thermometers at nanoscale. The methods developed here for high-precision measurements and first-principles calculations can be further extended to other solid-state spin defects.

Inevitable interactions with the reservoir largely degrade the performance of non-local gates, which hinders practical quantum computation from coming into existence. Here we experimentally demonstrate a 99.920(7)\%-fidelity controlled-NOT gate by suppressing the complicated noise in a solid-state spin system at room temperature. We found that the fidelity limited at 99\% in previous works results from only considering static noise, and thus, in this work, time-dependent noise and quantum noise are also included. All noises are dynamically corrected by an exquisitely designed shaped pulse, giving the resulting error below $10^{-4}$. The residual gate error is mainly originated from the longitudinal relaxation and the waveform distortion that can both be further reduced technically. Our noise-resistant method is universal, and will benefit other solid-state spin systems.

Efficient detection of single optical centers in solids is essential for quantum information processing, sensing, and single-photon generation applications. In this work, we use radio-frequency (RF) reflectometry to electrically detect the photoionization induced by a single Er$^{3+}$ ion in Si. The high bandwidth and sensitivity of the RF reflectometry provide sub-100-ns time resolution for the photoionization detection. With this technique, the optically excited state lifetime of a single Er$^{3+}$ ion in a Si nano-transistor is measured for the first time to be 0.49 $\pm$ 0.04 $\mu$s. Our results demonstrate an efficient approach for detecting a charge state change induced by Er excitation and relaxation. This approach could be used for fast readout of other single optical centers in solids and is attractive for large-scale integrated optical quantum systems thanks to the multi-channel RF reflectometry demonstrated with frequency multiplexing techniques.

By utilizing quantum mechanical effects, such as superposition and entanglement, quantum metrology promises higher precision than the classical strategies. It is, however, practically challenging to realize the quantum advantages. This is mainly due to the difficulties in engineering non-classical probe state and performing nontrivial measurement in practise, particularly with a large number of particles. Here we propose a scalable scheme with a symmetrical variational quantum circuit which, same as the Loschmidt echo, consists of a forward and a backward evolution. We show that in this scheme the quantum Fisher information, which quantifies the precision limit, can be efficiently obtained from a measurement signal of the Loschmidt echo. We experimentally implement the scheme on an ensemble of 10-spin quantum processor and successfully achieves a precision near the theoretical limit which outperforms the standard quantum limit with 12.4 dB. The scheme can be efficiently implemented on various noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices which provides a promising routine to demonstrate quantum advantages.

Non-collinear spin order that breaks space inversion symmetry and allows efficient electric-field control of magnetism makes BiFeO$_3$ a promising candidate for applications in low-power spintronic devices. Epitaxial strain effects have been intensively studied and exhibit significant modulation of the magnetic order in BiFeO$_3$, but tuning its spin structure with continuously varied uniaxial strain is still lacking up to date. Here, we apply \emph{in situ} uniaxial strain to a freestanding BiFeO$_3$ film and use scanning NV microscope to image the nanoscale magnetic order in real-space. The strain is continuously increased from 0\% to 1.5\% and four images under different strains are acquired during this period. The images show that the spin cycloid tilts by $\sim 12.6^\circ$ when strain approaches 1.5\%. A first principle calculation has been processed to show that the tilting is energetically favorable under such strain. One of the most intriguing advantage of Floquet engineering is to generate new phases with large topological invariants. In this work, we experimentally simulate a periodically quenched generalized Haldane model on an NV center in diamond, and observe its Floquet Chern insulator phases with Chern numbers $C=1,2,4$ by imaging the static and dynamic spin textures in momentum space. Our work reveals the power of Floquet driving in transforming system's topology and generating large Chern number phases. We report an experimental investigation of quantum correlations in a two-qutrit spin system in a single nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond at room temperatures. Quantum entanglement between two qutrits was observed at room temperature and the existence of non-classical correlations beyond entanglement in the qutrit case has been revealed. Our work demonstrates the potential of the NV centers as the multi-qutrit system to execute quantum information tasks and provides a powerful experimental platform for studying fundamental physics of high-dimensional quantum systems in future.

Developing robust microwave-field sensors is both fundamentally and practically important with a wide range of applications from astronomy to communication engineering. The Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) center in diamond is an attractive candidate for such purpose because of its magnetometric sensitivity, stability and compatibility with ambient conditions. However, the existing NV center-based magnetometers have limited sensitivity in the microwave band. Here we present a continuous heterodyne detection method that can enhance the sensor's response to weak microwaves, even in the absence of spin controls. Experimentally, we achieve a sensitivity of 8.9 pT$\cdot$Hz$^{-1/2}$ for microwaves of 2.9 GHz by simultaneously using an ensemble of $n_{\text{NV}} \sim 2.8\times10^{13}$ NV centers within a sensor volume of $4\times10^{-2}$ mm$^3$. Besides, we also achieve $1/t$ scaling of frequency resolution up to measurement time $t$ of 10000 s. Quantum correlations are key information about the structures and dynamics of quantum many-body systems. There are many types of high-order quantum correlations with different time orderings, but only a few of them are accessible to the existing detection methods. Recently, a quantum-sensing approach based on sequential weak measurement was proposed to selectively extract arbitrary types of correlations. However, its experimental implementation is still elusive. Here we demonstrate the extraction of arbitrary types of quantum correlations. We generalized the original weak measurement scheme to a protocol using synthesized quantum channels, which can be applied to more universal scenarios including both single and ensemble quantum systems. In this quantum channel method, various controls on the sensors are superimposed to select the sensor-target evolution along a specific path for measuring a desired quantum correlation. Using the versatility of nuclear magnetic resonance techniques, we successfully extract the second- and fourth-order correlations of a nuclear-spin target by another nuclear-spin sensor. The Unruh effect states an accelerated particle detector registers a thermal response when moving through the Minkowski vacuum, and its thermal feature is believed to be inseparable from Lorentz symmetry: Without the latter, the former disappears. Here we propose to observe analogue circular Unruh effect using an impurity atom in a quasi-two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with dominant dipole-dipole interactions between atoms or molecules in the ultracold gas. Quantum fluctuations in the condensate possess a Bogoliubov spectrum $\omega_{\mathbf k}=c_0|{\mathbf k}|f(\hbar\,c_0|{\mathbf k}|/M_\ast)$, working as an analogue Lorentz-violating quantum field with the Lorentz-breaking scale $M_\ast$, and the impurity acts as an effective Unruh-DeWitt detector thereof. When the detector travels close to the sound speed, observation of the Unruh effect in our quantum fluid platform becomes experimentally feasible. In particular, the deviation of the Bogoliubov spectrum from the Lorentz-invariant case is highly engineerable through the relative strength of the dipolar and contact interactions, and thus a viable laboratory tool is furnished to experimentally investigate whether the thermal characteristic of Unruh effect is robust to the breaking of Lorentz symmetry., Comment: 8+4 pages, 3 figures

High-sensitivity detection of microscopic magnetic field is essential in many fields. Good sensitivity and high spatial resolution are mutually contradictory in measurement, which is quantified by the energy resolution limit (ERL). Here we report that a sensitivity of 0.5 ${\bf{nT/\sqrt{Hz}}}$ at the nanoscale is achieved experimentally by using nitrogen-vacancy defects in diamond with depths of tens of nanometers. The achieved sensitivity is substantially enhanced by integrating with multiple quantum techniques, including real-time-feedback initialization, dynamical decoupling with shaped pulses, repetitive readout via quantum logic. The rich electron correlations and highly coherent transport in reconfigurable devices sketched by a conductive atomic force microscope tip at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface have enabled the oxide platform an ideal playground for studying correlated electrons and quantum technological applications. Why these one-dimensional devices possess enhanced properties over the two-dimensional interface, however, has remained elusive. Here we provide evidence that one-dimensional LaAlO3/SrTiO3 nanowires are intrinsically ferroelastic domain walls by nature through thermodynamic study. We have observed spreading resistance anomalies under thermo-stimulus and temperature cycles, with characteristic temperatures matching domain wall polarity. This information is crucial in understanding the novel phenomena including superconductivity and high mobility quantum transport.

Er-doped Si is a promising candidate for quantum information applications due to its telecom wavelength optical transition and its compatibility with Si nanofabrication technologies. Recent spectroscopic studies based on photoluminescence excitation have shown multiple well-defined lattice sites that Er occupies in Si. Here we report the first measurement of the Zeeman and hyperfine tensors of a single 167Er3+ ion in Si. All the obtained tensors are highly anisotropic with the largest value principal axes aligning in nearly the same direction, and the trace of the lowest crystal field level g-tensor is 17.78$\pm$0.40. The results indicate that this specific Er site is likely to be a distorted cubic site that exhibits monoclinic (C1) symmetry. Finally, zero first-order-Zeeman (ZEFOZ) fields are identified for this site and could be used to reduce decoherence of hyperfine spin states in future experiments.

Investigation the boundary between quantum mechanical description and classical realistic view is of fundamental importance. The Leggett-Garg inequality provides a criterion to distinguish between quantum systems and classical systems, and can be used to prove the macroscopic superposition state. A larger upper bound of the LG function can be obtained in a multi-level system. Here, we present an experimental violation of the Leggett-Garg inequality in a three-level system using nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond by ideal negative result measurement. The experimental maximum value of Leggett-Garg function is $K_{3}^{exp}=1.625\pm0.022$ which exceeds the L\"uders bound with a $5\sigma$ level of confidence.

High-sensitivity magnetometry is of critical importance to the fields of biomagnetism and geomagnetism. However, the magnetometry for the low-frequency signal detection meets the challenge of sensitivity improvement, due to multiple types of low-frequency noise sources. In particular, for the solid-state spin quantum magnetometry, the sensitivity of low frequency magnetic field has been limited by short $T_2^*$. Here, we demonstrate a $T_2$-limited dc quantum magnetometry based on the nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond. The magnetometry, combining the flux modulation and the spin-echo protocol, promotes the sensitivity from being limited by $T_2^*$ to $T_2$ of orders of magnitude longer. The sensitivity of the dc magnetometry of 32 $\rm pT/Hz^{1/2}$ has been achieved, overwhelmingly improved by 100 folds over the Ramsey-type method result of 4.6 $\rm nT/Hz^{1/2}$. Further enhancement of the sensitivity have been systematically analyzed, although challenging but plenty of room is achievable. Our result sheds light on realization of room temperature dc quantum magnetomerty with femtotesla-sensitivity in the future.

To efficiently align the creation of defect center with photonics structure in nanoscale precision is one of the outstanding challenges for realizing high-performance photonic devices and the application in quantum technology such as quantum sensing, scalable quantum systems, and quantum computing network. Here, we propose a facile self-aligned patterning technique wholly based on conventional engineering technology, with the doping precision can reach ~15nm. Specifically, we demonstrate this technique by fabricating diamond nanopillar sensor arrays, which show high consistency and near-optimal photon counts, high yield approaching the theoretical limit, and high filtering efficiency for different NV centers. Combined with appropriate crystal orientation, a saturated fluorescence rate of 4.65 Mcps and the best reported fluorescence-dependent detection sensitivity of 1900 cps^(-1/2) are achieved. This technique applicable to all similar solid-state systems should facilitate the development of parallel quantum sensing and scalable information processing.

Quantum information processing with multi-level systems (qudits) provides additional features and applications than the two-level systems. However, qudits are more prone to dephasing and dynamical decoupling for qudits has never been experimentally demonstrated. Here, as a proof-of-principle demonstration, we experimentally apply dynamical decoupling to protect superpositions with three levels of a trapped $^9\rm{Be}^+$ ion from ambient noisy magnetic field, prolonging coherence by up to approximately an order of magnitude. Our demonstration, straightforwardly scalable to more levels, may open up a path toward long coherence quantum memory, metrology and information processing with qudits., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures

Following the rising interest in quantum information science, the extension of a heat engine to the quantum regime by exploring microscopic quantum systems has seen a boom of interest in the last decade. Although quantum coherence in the quantum system of the working medium has been investigated to play a nontrivial role, a complete understanding of the intrinsic quantum advantage of quantum heat engines remains elusive. We experimentally demonstrate that the quantum correlation between the working medium and the thermal bath is critical for the quantum advantage of a quantum Szilard engine, where quantum coherence in the working medium is naturally excluded. By quantifying the non-classical correlation through quantum steering, we reveal that the heat engine is quantum when the demon can truly steer the working medium. The average work obtained by taking different ways of work extraction on the working medium can be used to verify the real quantum Szilard engine.

Single rare-earth ions in solids show great potential for quantum applications, including single photon emission, quantum computing, and high-precision sensing. However, homogeneous linewidths observed for single rare-earth ions are orders of magnitude larger than the sub-kilohertz linewidths observed for ensembles in bulk crystals. The spectral broadening creates a significant challenge for achieving entanglement generation and qubit operation with single rare-earth ions, so it is critical to investigate the broadening mechanisms. We report a spectral broadening study on a single Er$^{3+}$ ion in a Si nano-transistor. The Er-induced photoionisation rate is found to be an appropriate quantity to represent the optical transition probability for spectroscopic studies, and the single ion spectra display a Lorentzian lineshape at all optical powers in use. Spectral broadening is observed at relatively high optical powers and is caused by spectral diffusion on a fast time scale.

In the processing of quantum computation, analyzing and learning the pattern of the quantum data are essential for many tasks. Quantum machine learning algorithms can not only deal with the quantum states generated in the preceding quantum procedures, but also the quantum registers encoding classical problems. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate the anomaly detection of quantum states encoding audio samples with a three-qubit quantum processor consisting of solid-state spins in diamond. By training the quantum machine with a few normal samples, the quantum machine can detect the anomaly samples with a minimum error rate of 15.4%. These results show the power of quantum anomaly detection in dealing with machine learning tasks and the potential to detect abnormal output of quantum devices., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

Triply degenerate points (TDPs), which correspond to new types of topological semimetals, can support novel quasiparticles possessing effective integer spins while preserving Fermi statistics. Here by mapping the momentum space to the parameter space of a three-level system in a trapped ion, we experimentally explore the transitions between different types of TDPs driven by spin-tensor--momentum couplings. We observe the phase transitions between TDPs with different topological charges by measuring the Berry flux on a loop surrounding the gap-closing lines, and the jump of the Berry flux gives the jump of the topological charge (up to a $2\pi$ factor) across the transitions. For the Berry flux measurement, we employ a new method by examining the geometric rotations of both spin vectors and tensors, which lead to a generalized solid angle equal to the Berry flux. The controllability of multi-level ion offers a versatile platform to study high-spin physics and our work paves the way to explore novel topological phenomena therein., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures

Magnetic biskyrmions are observed in experiments but their existences are still under debate. In this work, we present the existence of biskyrmions in a magnetic film with tilted uniaxial anisotropy via micromagnetic simulations. We find biskyrmions and bubbles share a unified three-dimensional structure, in which the relative position of two intrinsic Bloch points dominates the two-dimensional topological property in the film middle. The film edge can drive Bloch points and transform bubbles into biskyrmions via the demagnetizing field. This mechanism is found in the formation process of biskyrmions in confined geometry under zero field. Our work clarifies the structure and formation mechanism of biskyrmions, emphasizing the three-dimensional aspect of skyrmion-related nanostructures., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Along with the scaling of dimensions in quantum systems, transitions between the system's energy levels would become close in frequency, which are conventionally resolved by weak and lengthy pulses. Here, we extend and experimentally demonstrate analytically based swift quantum control techniques on a four-level trapped ion system, where we perform individual or simultaneous control over two pairs of spectrally nearby transitions with tailored time-varied drive, achieving operational fidelities ranging from 99.2(3)\% to 99.6(3)\%. Remarkably, we achieve approximately an order of magnitude speed up comparing with the case of weak square pulse for a general control. Therefore, our demonstration may be beneficial to a broad range of quantum systems with crowded spectrum, for spectroscopy, quantum information processing and quantum simulation., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures
