Over the past three decades, multiple reverberation mapping (RM) campaigns conducted for the quasar PG 2130+099 have exhibited inconsistent findings with time delays ranging from $\sim$10 to $\sim$200 days. To achieve a comprehensive understanding of the geometry and dynamics of the broad-line region (BLR) in PG 2130+099, we continued an ongoing high-cadence RM monitoring campaign using the Calar Alto Observatory 2.2m optical telescope for an extra four years from 2019 to 2022. We measured the time lags of several broad emission lines (including He II, He I, H$\beta$, and Fe II) with respect to the 5100 {\AA} continuum, and their time lags continuously vary through the years. Especially, the H$\beta$ time lags exhibited approximately a factor of two increase in the last two years. Additionally, the velocity-resolved time delays of the broad H$\beta$ emission line reveal a back-and-forth change between signs of virial motion and inflow in the BLR. The combination of negligible ($\sim$10%) continuum change and substantial time-lag variation (over two times) results in significant scatter in the intrinsic $R_{\rm H\beta}-L_{\rm 5100}$ relationship for PG 2130+099. Taking into account the consistent changes in the continuum variability time scale and the size of the BLR, we tentatively propose that the changes in the measurement of the BLR size may be affected by 'geometric dilution'., Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures, 7 tables; accepted for publication in ApJ

We conduct a reverberation mapping (RM) campaign to spectroscopically monitor a sample of selected bright active galactic nuclei with large anticipated broad-line region (BLR) sizes adequate for spectroastrometric observations by the GRAVITY instrument on the Very Large Telescope Interferometer. We report the first results for five objects, IC 4329A, Mrk 335, Mrk 509, Mrk 1239, and PDS 456, among which Mrk 1239 and PDS 456 are for the first time spectroscopically monitored. We obtain multi-year monitoring data and perform multi-component spectral decomposition to extract the broad H$\beta$ profiles. We detect significant time lags between the H$\beta$ and continuum variations, generally obeying the previously established BLR size-luminosity relation. Velocity-resolved H$\beta$ time lags illustrate diverse, possibly evolving BLR kinematics. We further measure the H$\beta$ line widths from mean and rms spectra and the resulting virial products show good consistency among different seasons. Adopting a unity virial factor and the full width at half maximum of the broad H$\beta$ line from the mean spectrum as the measure of velocity, the obtained black hole mass averaged over seasons is $\log M_\bullet/M_\odot=8.02_{-0.14}^{+0.09}$, $6.92_{-0.12}^{+0.12}$, $8.01_{-0.25}^{+0.16}$, $7.44_{-0.14}^{+0.13}$, and $8.59_{-0.11}^{+0.07}$ for the five objects, respectively. The black hole mass estimations using other line width measures are also reported (up to the virial factors). For objects with previous RM campaigns, our mass estimates are in agreement with earlier results. Reverberation mapping (RM) has long been a powerful tool for measuring the masses of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at the centers of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), but the precision of these mass measurements depends on the so-called virial factors. It has been demonstrated that the virial factors exhibit significant diversity, spanning approximately 1-2 orders of magnitude across different AGNs. However, the underlying physical drivers for the diversity have not yet been finalized. Here, adopting the SMBH mass -- spheroid luminosity relations of inactive galaxies with different bulge classifications, we calibrate the virial factors corresponding to the AGNs with pseudobulges (PB) and classical bulges (or elliptical hosts, CB) using the latest nearby RM sample. We investigate the correlations between virial factors and the AGN spectral properties, and find that for both PB and CB samples, the FWHM-based virial factors exhibit significant anti-correlations with the emission-line widths and profiles, while the $\sigma_{\rm line}$-based virial factors only show moderate anti-correlations with line widths for PB. We attribute these correlations mainly to the inclination angle or opening angle of the broad-line regions. Moreover, we establish new relations to give more precise virial factors and, in combination with the latest iron-corrected radius-luminosity relation, develop tentatively new single-epoch estimators of SMBH masses, which enable more accurate measurements of SMBH masses in large AGN samples., Comment: 57 pages, 15 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series

We report first-time reverberation mapping results for 14 AGNs from the ongoing Monitoring AGNs with H$\beta$ Asymmetry campaign (MAHA). These results utilize optical spectra obtained with the Long Slit Spectrograph on the Wyoming Infrared 2.3m Telescope between 2017 November-2023 May. MAHA combines long-duration monitoring with high cadence. We report results from multiple observing seasons for 9 of the 14 objects. These results include H$\beta$ time lags, supermassive black hole masses, and velocity-resolved time lags. We fit the UV/optical lightcurves of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 817 to produce maps of the accretion disk temperature fluctuations $\delta T$ resolved in time and radius. The $\delta T$ maps are dominated by coherent radial structures that move slowly ($v \ll c$) inwards and outwards, which conflicts with the idea that disk variability is driven only by reverberation. Instead, these slow-moving temperature fluctuations are likely due to variability intrinsic to the disk. We test how modifying the input lightcurves by smoothing and subtracting them changes the resulting $\delta T$ maps and find that most of the temperature fluctuations exist over relatively long timescales ($\sim$100s of days). We show how detrending AGN lightcurves can be used to separate the flux variations driven by the slow-moving temperature fluctuations from those driven by reverberation. We also simulate contamination of the continuum emission from the disk by continuum emission from the broad line region (BLR), which is expected to have spectral features localized in wavelength, such as the Balmer break contaminating the $U$ band. We find that a disk with a smooth temperature profile cannot produce a signal localized in wavelength and that any BLR contamination should appear as residuals in our model lightcurves. Given the observed residuals, we estimate that only $\sim$20% of the variable flux in the $U$ and $u$ lightcurves can be due to BLR contamination. Accretion of material onto a black hole drags any magnetic fields present inwards, increasing their strength. Theory predicts that sufficiently strong magnetic fields can halt the accretion flow, producing a magnetically arrested disk (MAD). We analyze archival multi-wavelength observations of an outburst from the black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1820+070 in 2018. The radio and optical fluxes are delayed by about 8 and 17 days respectively, compared to the X-ray flux. We interpret this as evidence for the formation of a MAD. In this scenario, the magnetic field is amplified by an expanding corona, forming a MAD around the time of the radio peak. An intensive reverberation mapping campaign on the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk817 using the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) revealed significant variations in the response of the broad UV emission lines to fluctuations in the continuum emission. The response of the prominent UV emission lines changes over a $\sim$60-day duration, resulting in distinctly different time lags in the various segments of the light curve over the 14 months observing campaign. One-dimensional echo-mapping models fit these variations if a slowly varying background is included for each emission line. These variations are more evident in the CIV light curve, which is the line least affected by intrinsic absorption in Mrk817 and least blended with neighboring emission lines. We identify five temporal windows with distinct emission line response, and measure their corresponding time delays, which range from 2 to 13 days. These temporal windows are plausibly linked to changes in the UV and X-ray obscuration occurring during these same intervals. The shortest time lags occur during periods with diminishing obscuration, whereas the longest lags occur during periods with rising obscuration. We propose that the obscuring outflow shields the ultraviolet broad lines from the ionizing continuum. The resulting change in the spectral energy distribution of the ionizing continuum, as seen by clouds at a range of distances from the nucleus, is responsible for the changes in the line response., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We report \hbox{XMM-Newton} observations of two examples of an unclassified type of \hbox{X-ray} weak quasars from the \citet{2020ApJ...900..141P} survey of \hbox{X-ray} weak quasars in the Chandra archive, SDSS J083116.62+321329.6 at $z=1.797$ and SDSS J142339.87+042041.1 at $z=1.702$. They do not belong to the known populations of \hbox{X-ray} weak quasars that show broad absorption lines, weak ultraviolet (UV) broad emission lines, or red optical/UV continua. Instead, they display typical quasar UV spectra and spectral energy distributions. In the \hbox{XMM-Newton} observations, both quasars show nominal levels of \hbox{X-ray} emission with typical quasar \hbox{X-ray} spectral shapes (\hbox{power-law} photon indices of $1.99^{+0.27}_{-0.23}$ and $1.86^{+0.15}_{-0.14}$), displaying strong \hbox{X-ray} variability compared to the archival Chandra data (variability factors of $4.0^{+1.6}_{-1.4}$ and $9.0^{+7.4}_{-3.8}$ in terms of the 2 keV flux density). Simultaneous optical (rest-frame UV) spectra indicate no strong variability compared to the archival spectra. Long-term optical/UV and infrared light curves do not show any substantial variability either. We consider that the \hbox{X-ray} weakness observed in the Chandra data is due to \hbox{X-ray} obscuration from a small-scale dust-free absorber, likely related to accretion-disk winds. Such \hbox{X-ray} weak/absorbed states are probably rare in typical quasars, and thus both targets recovered to \hbox{X-ray} nominal-strength states in the \hbox{XMM-Newton} observations., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables. The AGN STORM 2 campaign is a large, multiwavelength reverberation mapping project designed to trace out the structure of Mrk 817 from the inner accretion disk to the broad emission line region and out to the dusty torus. As part of this campaign, Swift performed daily monitoring of Mrk 817 for approximately 15 months, obtaining observations in X-rays and six UV/optical filters. The X-ray monitoring shows that Mrk 817 was in a significantly fainter state than in previous observations, with only a brief flare where it reached prior flux levels. The X-ray spectrum is heavily obscured. The UV/optical light curves show significant variability throughout the campaign and are well correlated with one another, but uncorrelated with the X-rays. Combining the Swift UV/optical light curves with Hubble UV continuum light curves, we measure interband continuum lags, $\tau(\lambda)$, that increase with increasing wavelength roughly following $\tau(\lambda) \propto \lambda^{4/3}$, the dependence expected for a geometrically thin, optically thick, centrally illuminated disk. Modeling of the light curves reveals a period at the beginning of the campaign where the response of the continuum is suppressed compared to later in the light curve - the light curves are not simple shifted and scaled versions of each other. The interval of suppressed response corresponds to a period of high UV line and X-ray absorption, and reduced emission line variability amplitudes. We suggest that this indicates a significant contribution to the continuum from the broad line region gas that sees an absorbed ionizing continuum., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We report strong and rapid X-ray variability found from the super-Eddington accreting quasar SDSS J081456.10+532533.5 at $z=0.1197$. It has a black-hole mass of $2.7\times10^{7}{M_{\odot}}$ and a dimensionless accretion rate of $\approx4$ measured from reverberation-mapping observations. It showed weak X-ray emission in the 2021 February Chandra observation, with the 2 keV flux density being $9.6^{+11.6}_{-4.6}$ times lower compared to an archival Swift observation. The 2 keV flux density is also $11.7^{+9.6}_{-6.3}$ times weaker compared to the expectation from its optical/UV emission. In a follow-up XMM-Newton observation 32 days later, the 2 keV flux density increased by a factor of $5.3^{+6.4}_{-2.4}$, and the spectra are best described by a power law modified with partial-covering absorption; the absorption-corrected intrinsic continuum is at a nominal flux level. Nearly simultaneous optical spectra reveal no variability, and there is only mild long-term optical/infrared variability from archival data (with a maximum variability amplitude of $\approx50\%$). We interpret the X-ray variability with an obscuration scenario, where the intrinsic X-ray continuum does not vary but the absorber has variable column density and covering factor along the line of sight. The absorber is likely the small-scale clumpy accretion wind that has been proposed to be responsible for similar X-ray variability in other super-Eddington accreting quasars., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Measuring broad emission-line widths in active galactic nuclei (AGN) is not straightforward owing to the complex nature of flux variability in these systems. Line-width measurements become especially challenging when signal-to-noise is low, profiles are narrower, or spectral resolution is low. We conducted an extensive correlation analysis between emission-line measurements from the optical spectra of Markarian 142 (Mrk 142; a narrow-line Seyfert galaxy) taken with the Gemini North Telescope (Gemini) at a spectral resolution of 185.6+\-10.2 km/s and the Lijiang Telescope (LJT) at 695.2+\-3.9 km/s to investigate the disparities in the measured broad-line widths from both telescope data. Mrk~142 posed a challenge due to its narrow broad-line profiles, which were severely affected by instrumental broadening in the lower-resolution LJT spectra. We discovered that allowing the narrow-line flux of permitted lines having broad and narrow components to vary during spectral fitting caused a leak in the narrow-line flux to the broad component, resulting in broader broad-line widths in the LJT spectra. Fixing the narrow-line flux ratios constrained the flux leak and yielded the Hydrogen-beta broad-line widths from LJT spectra $\sim$54\% closer to the Gemini Hydrogen-beta widths than with flexible narrow-line ratios. The availability of spectra at different resolutions presented this unique opportunity to inspect how spectral resolution affected emission-line profiles in our data and adopt a unique method to accurately measure broad-line widths. Reconsidering line-measurement methods while studying diverse AGN populations is critical for the success of future reverberation-mapping studies. The AGN STORM 2 collaboration targeted the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 817 for a year-long multiwavelength, coordinated reverberation mapping campaign including HST, Swift, XMM-Newton, NICER, and ground-based observatories. Early observations with NICER and XMM revealed an X-ray state ten times fainter than historical observations, consistent with the presence of a new dust-free, ionized obscurer. The following analysis of NICER spectra attributes variability in the observed X-ray flux to changes in both the column density of the obscurer by at least one order of magnitude ($N_\mathrm{H}$ ranges from $2.85\substack{+0.48\\ -0.33} \times 10^{22}\text{ cm}^{-2}$ to $25.6\substack{+3.0\\ -3.5} \times 10^{22} \text{ cm}^{-2}$) and the intrinsic continuum brightness (the unobscured flux ranges from $10^{-11.8}$ to $10^{-10.5}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ ). While the X-ray flux generally remains in a faint state, there is one large flare during which Mrk 817 returns to its historical mean flux. The obscuring gas is still present at lower column density during the flare but it also becomes highly ionized, increasing its transparency. Correlation between the column density of the X-ray obscurer and the strength of UV broad absorption lines suggests that the X-ray and UV continua are both affected by the same obscuration, consistent with a clumpy disk wind launched from the inner broad line region., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, Accepted to ApJ

We present reverberation mapping measurements for the prominent ultraviolet broad emission lines of the active galactic nucleus Mrk817 using 165 spectra obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope. Our ultraviolet observations are accompanied by X-ray, optical, and near-infrared observations as part of the AGN Space Telescope and Optical Reverberation Mapping Program 2 (AGN STORM 2). Using the cross-correlation lag analysis method, we find significant correlated variations in the continuum and emission-line light curves. We measure rest-frame delayed responses between the far-ultraviolet continuum at 1180 A and Ly$\alpha$ $\lambda1215$ A ($10.4_{-1.4}^{+1.6}$ days), N V $\lambda1240$ A ($15.5_{-4.8}^{+1.0}$days), SiIV + OIV] $\lambda1397$ A ($8.2_{-1.4}^{+1.4}$ days), CIV $\lambda1549$ A ($11.8_{-2.8}^{+3.0}$ days), and HeII $\lambda1640$ A ($9.0_{-1.9}^{+4.5}$ days) using segments of the emission-line profile that are unaffected by absorption and blending, which results in sampling different velocity ranges for each line. However, we find that the emission-line responses to continuum variations are more complex than a simple smoothed, shifted, and scaled version of the continuum light curve. We also measure velocity-resolved lags for the Ly$\alpha$, and CIV emission lines. The lag profile in the blue wing of Ly$\alpha$ is consistent with virial motion, with longer lags dominating at lower velocities, and shorter lags at higher velocities. The CIV lag profile shows the signature of a thick rotating disk, with the shortest lags in the wings, local peaks at $\pm$ 1500 $\rm km\,s^{-1}$, and a local minimum at line center. The other emission lines are dominated by broad absorption lines and blending with adjacent emission lines. We measure the black hole mass and investigate the accretion flow around the local ($z=0.0502$) quasar PG 1119+120. Spectroscopic monitoring with Calar Alto provides H$\beta$ lags and linewidths from which we estimate a black hole mass of $\log \left(M_{\bullet}/\mathrm{M}_{\odot} \right) = 7.0$, uncertain by $\sim0.4$ dex. High cadence photometric monitoring over two years with the Las Cumbres Observatory provides lightcurves in 7 optical bands suitable for intensive continuum reverberation mapping. We identify variability on two timescales. Slower variations on a 100-day timescale exhibit excess flux and increased lag in the $u'$ band and are thus attributable to diffuse bound-free continuum emission from the broad line region. Faster variations that we attribute to accretion disc reprocessing lack a $u'$-band excess and have flux and delay spectra consistent with either $\tau \propto \lambda^{4/3}$, as expected for a temperature structure of $T(R) \propto R^{-3/4}$ for a thin accretion disc, or $\tau \propto \lambda^{2}$ expected for a slim disc. Decomposing the flux into variable (disc) and constant (host galaxy) components, we find the disc SED to be flatter than expected with $f_{\nu} \sim \rm{const}$. Modelling the SED predicts an Eddington ratio of $\lambda_{\rm Edd} > 1$, where the flat spectrum can be reproduced by a slim disc with little dust extinction or a thin disc which requires more dust extinction. While this accretion is super-Eddington, the geometry is still unclear, however a slim disc is expected due to the high radiation pressure at these accretion rates, and is entirely consistent with our observations., Comment: 23 pages, 16 figures, 10 tables. We present the first results from a 100-day Swift, NICER and ground-based X-ray/UV/optical reverberation mapping campaign of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Mrk 335, when it was in an unprecedented low X-ray flux state. Despite dramatic suppression of the X-ray variability, we still observe UV/optical lags as expected from disk reverberation. Moreover, the UV/optical lags are consistent with archival observations when the X-ray luminosity was >10 times higher. Interestingly, both low- and high-flux states reveal UV/optical lags that are 6-11 times longer than expected from a thin disk. These long lags are often interpreted as due to contamination from the broad line region, however the u band excess lag (containing the Balmer jump from the diffuse continuum) is less prevalent than in other AGN. The Swift campaign showed a low X-ray-to-optical correlation (similar to previous campaigns), but NICER and ground-based monitoring continued for another two weeks, during which the optical rose to the highest level of the campaign, followed ~10 days later by a sharp rise in X-rays. While the low X-ray countrate and relatively large systematic uncertainties in the NICER background make this measurement challenging, if the optical does lead X-rays in this flare, this indicates a departure from the zeroth-order reprocessing picture. If the optical flare is due to an increase in mass accretion rate, this occurs on much shorter than the viscous timescale. There has recently been growing evidence that broad-line regions (BLRs) in active galactic nuclei have regular substructures, such as spiral arms, which are supported by the fact that the radii of BLRs measured by RM observations are generally consistent with the self-gravitating regions of accretion disks. We have shown in Paper I that the spiral arms excited by the gravitational instabilities in these regions may exist in some disk-like BLRs. As the second paper of the series, we investigate the loosely wound spiral arms excited by gravitational instabilities in disk-like BLRs and present their observational characteristics. Following the treatments of Adams et al. (1989), we solve the governing integro-differential equation by a matrix scheme. The emission-line profiles, velocity-delay maps, and velocity-resolved lags of the BLR spiral arms are calculated. We find that the spiral arms can explain some phenomena in observations: (1) the emission-line profiles in the mean and rms spectra have different asymmetries, (2) some velocity-delay maps, e.g., NGC 5548, have complex sub-features (incomplete ellipse), (3) the timescales of the asymmetry changes in emission-line profiles (rms spectra) are short. These features are attractive for modeling the observed line profiles and the properties of reverberation, and for revealing the details of the BLR geometry and kinematics., Comment: 24 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We report the results of long-term reverberation mapping (RM) campaigns of the nearby active galactic nuclei (AGN) NGC 4151, spanning from 1994 to 2022, based on archived observations of the FAST Spectrograph Publicly Archived Programs and our new observations with the 2.3m telescope at the Wyoming Infrared Observatory. We reduce and calibrate all the spectra in a consistent way, and derive light curves of the broad H$\beta$ line and 5100\,{\AA} continuum. Continuum light curves are also constructed using public archival photometric data to increase sampling cadences. We subtract the host galaxy contamination using {\it HST} imaging to correct fluxes of the calibrated light curves. Utilizing the long-term archival photometric data, we complete the absolute flux-calibration of the AGN continuum. We find that the H$\beta$ time delays are correlated with the 5100\,{\AA} luminosities as $\tau_{\rm H\beta}\propto L_{5100}^{0.46\pm0.16}$. This is remarkably consistent with Bentz et al. (2013)'s global size-luminosity relationship of AGNs. Moreover, the data sets for five of the seasons allow us to obtain the velocity-resolved delays of the H$\beta$ line, showing diverse structures (outflows, inflows and disks). Combining our results with previous independent measurements, we find the measured dynamics of the H$\beta$ broad-line region (BLR) are possibly related to the long-term trend of the luminosity. There is also a possible additional $\sim$1.86 years time lag between the variation in BLR radius and luminosity. We present the first systematic broad-band X-ray study of super-Eddington accretion onto SMBHs with simultaneous {\it NuSTAR} and {\it XMM-Newton} or {\it Swift}/XRT observations of a sample of 8 super-Eddington accreting AGN with Eddington ratio $1<\lambda_{\rm Edd}<426$. We find that the SEAMBHs show a steep primary continuum slope as expected for sources accreting in the super Eddington regime, mostly dominated by relativistic reflection. The Iron K$\alpha$ emission lines of the sources of our sample show relativistic broadening. In addition the equivalent widths of the narrow components of the Iron K$\alpha$ lines follow the 'X-ray Baldwin' effect, also known as the 'Iwasawa-Taniguchi' effect. We found a statistically significant correlation between the photon-index of the primary power-law and the Eddington ratio, consistent with past studies. Moreover, as expected for super-Eddington sources, the median value of the reflection fraction of the sources we analysed is a factor $\sim 2$ higher than the median reflection fraction value of the type\,1 AGN from the BASS sample. We are able to estimate the coronal temperature for three sources of our sample: Mrk\,382 ($kT_e=7.8$\,keV), PG\,0026+129 ($kT_e=39$\,keV) and IRAS\,04416+1215 ($kT_e=3$\,keV). Looking at the position of the SEAMBHs sources of our sample in the compactness-temperature diagram it appears that in super-Eddington AGN, as for lower Eddington ratio AGN, the X-ray corona is controlled by pair production and annihilation., Comment: Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

Reverberation mapping (RM) is a widely-used method for probing the physics of broad-line regions (BLRs) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). There are increasing preliminary evidences that the RM behaviors of broad emission lines are influenced by BLR densities, however, the influences have not been investigated systematically from theoretical perspective. In the present paper, we adopt locally optimally emitting cloud model and use CLOUDY to obtain the one-dimensional transfer functions of the prominent UV and optical emission lines for different BLR densities. We find that the influences of BLR densities to RM behaviors have mainly three aspects. First, rarefied BLRs (with low gas densities) may show anomalous responses in RM observations. Their emission-line light curves inversely response the variations of continuum light curves, which may have been observed in some UV RM campaigns. Second, the different BLR densities in AGNs may result in correlations between the time lags and equivalent widths of emission lines, and may contribute to the scatters of the radius-luminosity relationships. Third, the variations of BLR densities may explain the changes of time lags in individual objects in different years. Some weak emission-line quasars (WLQs) are probably extreme cases of rarefied BLRs. There are increasing interests in binary supermassive black holes (SMBHs), but merging binaries with separations smaller than ~1 light days (~10^2 gravitational radii for 10^8 Msun), which are rapidly evolving under control of gravitational waves, are elusive in observations. In this paper, we discuss fates of mini-disks around component SMBHs for three regimes: 1) low rates (advection-dominated accretion flows: ADAFs); 2) intermediate rates; 3) super-Eddington accretion rates. Mini-disks with intermediate rates are undergoing evaporation through thermal conduction of hot corona forming a hybrid radial structure. When the binary orbital periods are shorter than sound propagation timescales of the evaporated mini-disks, a new instability, denoted as sound instability, arises because the disks will be highly twisted so that they are destroyed. We demonstrate a critical separation of A_{crit}~10^2 Rg from the sound instability of the mini-disks and the cavity is full of hot gas. For those binaries, component SMBHs are accreting with Bondi mode in the ADAF regime, showing periodic variations resulting from Doppler boosting effects in radio from the ADAFs due to orbital motion. In the mean while, the circumbinary disks (CBDs) are still not hot enough (ultraviolet deficit) to generate photons to ionize gas for broad emission lines. For slightly super-Eddington accretion of the CBDs, MgII line appears with decreases of UV deficit, and for intermediate super-Eddington Balmer lines appear, but CIV line never unless CBD accretion rates are extremely high. NGC 5548 is one of the active galactic nuclei (AGN) selected for our long-term spectroscopic monitoring with the Lijiang 2.4~m telescope, aiming at investigating the origin and evolution of the broad-line regions (BLRs), accurately measuring the mass of the supermassive black holes (SMBHs), and understanding structure and evolution of the AGN. We have performed five-season observations for NGC~5548 with the median sampling interval ranging from 1.25 to 3 days. The light curves of the 5100~\AA\ continuum and broad emission lines are measured after subtracting contamination of the host galaxy starlight. The time lags of the broad He~{\sc ii}, He~{\sc i}, H$\gamma$, and H$\beta$ lines with respect to the 5100~\AA\ continuum are obtained for each season and their mean time lags over the five seasons are 0.69, 4.66, 4.60, 8.43 days, respectively. The H$\gamma$ and H$\beta$ velocity-resolved lag profiles in the seasons of 2015, 2018, 2019, and 2021 are constructed, from which an ``M-shaped'' structure is found in 2015 but disappears after 2018. Our five-season reverberation mapping (RM) yields an averaged virial SMBH mass of $M_\bullet/10^7M_\odot=14.22$, with a small standard deviation of $1.89$. By combining the previous 18 RM campaigns and our five-season campaign for NGC~5548, we find that there exists a time lag of 3.5~years between the changes in the BLR size and optical luminosity. In this third paper of the series reporting on the reverberation mapping (RM) campaign of active galactic nuclei with asymmetric H$\beta$ emission-line profiles, we present results for 15 Palomar-Green (PG) quasars using spectra obtained between the end of 2016 to May 2021. This campaign combines long time spans with relatively high cadence. For 8 objects, both the time lags obtained from the entire light curves and the measurements from individual observing seasons are provided. Reverberation mapping of 9 of our targets has been attempted for the first time, while the results for 6 others can be compared with previous campaigns. We measure the H$\beta$ time lags over periods of years and estimate their black hole masses. The long duration of the campaign enables us to investigate their broad line region (BLR) geometry and kinematics for different years by using velocity-resolved lags, which demonstrate signatures of diverse BLR geometry and kinematics. The BLR geometry and kinematics of individual objects are discussed. We conduct a systematic search for quasars with periodic variations from the archival photometric data of the Zwicky Transient Facility by cross-matching with the quasar catalogs of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and V{\'e}ron-Cetty \& V{\'e}ron. We first select out 184 primitive periodic candidates using the generalized Lomb-Scargle periodogram and auto-correlation function and then estimate their statistical significance of periodicity based on two red-noise models, i.e., damped random walk (DRW) and single power-law (SPL) models. As such, we finally identify 106 (DRW) and 86 (SPL) candidates with the most significant periodic variations out of 143,700 quasars. We further compare DRW and SPL models using Bayes factors, which indicate a relative preference of the SPL model for our primitive sample. We thus adopt the candidates identified with SPL as the final sample and summarize its basic properties. We extend the light curves of the selected candidates by supplying other archival survey data to verify their periodicity. However, only three candidates (with 6-8 cycles of periods) meet the selection criteria. This result clearly implies that, instead of being strictly periodic, the variability must be quasi-periodic or caused by stochastic red-noise. Determining black hole masses and accretion rates with better accuracy and precision is crucial for understanding quasars as a population. These are fundamental physical properties that underpin models of active galactic nuclei. A primary technique to measure the black hole mass employs the reverberation mapping of low-redshift quasars, which is then extended via the radius-luminosity relationship for the broad-line region to estimate masses based on single-epoch spectra. An updated radius-luminosity relationship incorporates the flux ratio of optical Fe ii to H$\beta$ ($\equiv \mathcal{R}_{\rm Fe}$) to correct for a bias in which more highly accreting systems have smaller line-emitting regions than previously realized. In this current work, we demonstrate and quantify the effect of using this Fe-corrected radius-luminosity relationship on mass estimation by employing archival data sets possessing rest-frame optical spectra over a wide range of redshifts. We find that failure to use a Fe-corrected radius predictor results in overestimated single-epoch black hole masses for the most highly accreting quasars. Their accretion rate measures ($L_{\rm Bol}/ L_{\rm Edd}$ and $\dot{\mathscr{M}}$), are similarly underestimated. The strongest Fe-emitting quasars belong to two classes: high-z quasars with rest-frame optical spectra, which given their extremely high luminosities, require high accretion rates, and their low-z analogs, which given their low black holes masses, must have high accretion rates to meet survey flux limits. These classes have mass corrections downward of about a factor of two, on average. These results strengthen the association of the dominant Eigenvector 1 parameter $\mathcal{R}_{\rm Fe}$ with the accretion process., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS, 16 pages. In this paper we will list a few important goals that need to be addressed in the next decade, also taking into account the current discordances between the different cosmological probes, such as the disagreement in the value of the Hubble constant $H_0$, the $\sigma_8$--$S_8$ tension, and other less statistically significant anomalies. While these discordances can still be in part the result of systematic errors, their persistence after several years of accurate analysis strongly hints at cracks in the standard cosmological scenario and the necessity for new physics or generalisations beyond the standard model. In this paper, we focus on the $5.0\,\sigma$ tension between the {\it Planck} CMB estimate of the Hubble constant $H_0$ and the SH0ES collaboration measurements. After showing the $H_0$ evaluations made from different teams using different methods and geometric calibrations, we list a few interesting new physics models that could alleviate this tension and discuss how the next decade's experiments will be crucial. Moreover, we focus on the tension of the {\it Planck} CMB data with weak lensing measurements and redshift surveys, about the value of the matter energy density $\Omega_m$, and the amplitude or rate of the growth of structure ($\sigma_8,f\sigma_8$). We list a few interesting models proposed for alleviating this tension, and we discuss the importance of trying to fit a full array of data with a single model and not just one parameter at a time. Narrow Line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) galaxies have been shown to have high Eddington ratios and relatively small black hole masses. The measurement of the black hole masses is based on the virial relation which is dependent on the distribution of the line-emitting gas and the viewing angle to the source. Spectropolarimetry enables us to probe the geometry of this line-emitting gas and allows us to estimate independently the viewing angle of the source by comparing the spectrum viewed under natural light and in the polarized light. We performed spectropolarimetric observations of three NLSy1 - Mrk 1044, SDSS J080101.41+184840.7, and IRAS 04416+1215 using the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope. We use ESO Reflex workflow to perform standard data reduction and extract the natural and polarized spectra. We estimate the Stokes parameters and the viewing angles of the three sources. We model the Stokes parameters and infer the properties of the scattering media - located in the equatorial and polar regions, and simulate the spectra observed both in natural light and in polarized light using the polarization radiative transfer code STOKES. We confirm that all three sources are high Eddington ratio objects. We are successful in recovering the observed H$\alpha$ line profile both in the natural and polarized light using the STOKES modelling. We recover the polarization fractions of the order of 0.2-0.5% for the three sources. Our principal component analysis shows that the sample of the 25 sources including our sources, Fairall 9 from Jiang et al. (2021), and sources from Capetti et al. (2021) are mainly driven by the black hole mass and Eddington ratio. The quasar 3C 273 has been observed with infrared spectroastrometry (SA) on broad Pa$\alpha$ line and optical reverberation mapping (RM) on broad H$\beta$ line. SA delivers information about the angular size and structure of the Pa$\alpha$ broad-line region (BLR), while RM delivers information about the physical size and structure of the H$\beta$ BLR. Based on the fact that the two BLRs share the mass of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) and viewing inclination, a combination of SA and velocity-resolved RM (SARM) thereby allows us to simultaneously determine the SMBH mass and geometric distance through dynamically modeling the two BLRs. We construct a suite of dynamical models with different geometric configurations and apply a Bayesian approach to obtain the parameter inferences. Overall the obtained masses and distances are insensitive to specific BLR configurations but more or less depend on parameterizations of the vertical distributions. The most probable model, chosen in light of the Bayes factor, yields an angular-size distance of $\log\,(D_{\rm A}/{\rm Mpc}) = 2.83_{-0.28}^{+0.32}$ and SMBH mass of $\log\,(M_\bullet/M_\odot)=9.06_{-0.27}^{+0.21}$, which agrees with the relationships between SMBH masses and bulge properties. The BLRs have an inclination of $5_{-1}^{+1}$ degrees, consistent with that of the large-scale jet in 3C 273. The physical properties of the accretion flow and of the X-ray emitting plasma, in supermassive black holes accreting at extreme Eddington rates, are still very unclear. Here we present the analysis of simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations of the hyper-Eddington Seyfert 1 galaxy IRAS 04416+1215, carried out in 2020. The main goal of these observations is to investigate the properties of the X-ray corona, as well as the structure of the accretion flow and of the circumnuclear environment, in this regime of extreme accretion. IRAS 04416+1215 has one of the highest Eddington ratio ($\lambda_{\rm Edd}\simeq 472$) in the local Universe. It shows an interesting spectral shape, very similar to the standard Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxy's spectra, with the presence of multi-phase absorption structure composed of three phases, whose estimate of the minimum and maximum distances suggests two different interpretations, one consistent with the three X-ray winds being co-spatial, and possibly driven by magnetohydrodynamical processes, the other consistent with the multi-phase winds being also multi-scale. The X-ray spectrum of IRAS 04416+1215 also has a prominent soft excess component and a hard X-ray emission dominated by a reflection component. Moreover, our detailed spectral analysis shows that IRAS 04416+1215 has the lowest coronal temperature measured so far by NuSTAR ($kT_e=3-22$ keV, depending on the model). This is consistent with a hybrid coronal plasma, in which the primary continuum emission is driven by pair production due to high-energy tail of the energy distribution of non-thermal electrons.

Detecting continuous nanohertz gravitational waves (GWs) generated by individual close binaries of supermassive black holes (CB-SMBHs) is one of the primary objectives of pulsar timing arrays (PTAs). The detection sensitivity is slated to increase significantly as the number of well-timed millisecond pulsars will increase by more than an order of magnitude with the advent of next-generation radio telescopes. Currently, the Bayesian analysis pipeline using parallel tempering Markov chain Monte Carlo has been applied in multiple studies for CB-SMBH searches, but it may be challenged by the high dimensionality of the parameter space for future large-scale PTAs. One solution is to reduce the dimensionality by maximizing or marginalizing over uninformative parameters semi-analytically, but it is not clear whether this approach can be extended to more complex signal models without making overly simplified assumptions. Recently, the method of diffusive nested (DNest) sampling shown the capability of coping with high dimensionality and multimodality effectively in Bayesian analysis. In this paper, we apply DNest to search for continuous GWs in simulated pulsar timing residuals and find that it performs well in terms of accuracy, robustness, and efficiency for a PTA including $\mathcal{O}(10^2)$ pulsars. DNest also allows a simultaneous search of multiple sources elegantly, which demonstrates its scalability and general applicability. The recent advanced LIGO/Virgo detections of gravitational waves (GWs) from stellar binary black hole (BBH) mergers, in particular GW190521, which is potentially associated with a quasar, have stimulated renewed interest in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) as factories of merging BBHs. Compact objects evolving from massive stars are unavoidably enshrouded by a massive envelope to form accretion-modified stars (AMSs) in the dense gaseous environment of a supermassive black hole (SMBH) accretion disk. We show that most AMSs form binaries due to gravitational interaction with each other during radial migration in the SMBH disk, forming BBHs inside the AMS. When a BBH is born, its orbit is initially governed by the tidal torque of the SMBH. Bondi accretion onto BBH at a hyper-Eddington rate naturally develops and then controls the evolution of its orbits. We find that Bondi accretion leads to efficient removal of orbital angular momentum of the binary, whose final merger produces a GW burst. Meanwhile, the Blandford-Znajek mechanism pumps the spin energy of the merged BH to produce an electromagnetic counterpart (EMC). Moreover, hyper-Eddington accretion onto the BBH develops powerful outflows and triggers a Bondi explosion, which manifests itself as a EMC of the GW burst, depending on the viscosity of the accretion flow. Thermal emission from Bondi sphere appears as one of EMCs. BBHs radiate GWs with frequencies $\sim 10^{2}\,$Hz, which are accessible to LIGO., Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures, accepted by ApJ Letters

We report the results of a multi-year spectroscopic and photometric monitoring campaign of two luminous quasars, PG~0923+201 and PG~1001+291, both located at the high-luminosity end of the broad-line region (BLR) size-luminosity relation with optical luminosities above $10^{45}~{\rm erg~s^{-1}}$. PG~0923+201 is for the first time monitored, and PG~1001+291 was previously monitored but our campaign has a much longer temporal baseline. We detect time lags of variations of the broad H$\beta$, H$\gamma$, Fe {\sc ii} lines with respect to those of the 5100~{\AA} continuum. The velocity-resolved delay map of H$\beta$ in PG~0923+201 indicates a complicated structure with a mix of Keplerian disk-like motion and outflow, and the map of H$\beta$ in PG~1001+291 shows a signature of Keplerian disk-like motion. Assuming a virial factor of $f_{\rm BLR}=1$ and FWHM line widths, we measure the black hole mass to be $118_{-16}^{+11}\times 10^7 M_{\odot}$ for PG~0923+201 and $3.33_{-0.54}^{+0.62}\times 10^7 M_{\odot}$ for PG~1001+291. Their respective accretion rates are estimated to be $0.21_{-0.07}^{+0.06} \times L_{\rm Edd}\,c^{-2}$ and $679_{-227}^{+259}\times L_{\rm Edd}\,c^{-2}$, indicating that PG~0923+201 is a sub-Eddington accretor and PG~1001+291 is a super-Eddington accretor. While the H$\beta$ time lag of PG~0923+201 agrees with the size-luminosity relation, the time lag of PG~1001+291 shows a significant deviation, confirming that in high-luminosity AGN the BLR size depends on both luminosity and Eddington ratio. Black hole mass estimates from single AGN spectra will be over-estimated at high luminosities and redshifts if this effect is not taken into account., Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures, accepted

We present the first results from the ongoing, intensive, multi-wavelength monitoring program of the luminous Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 817. While this AGN was, in part, selected for its historically unobscured nature, we discovered that the X-ray spectrum is highly absorbed, and there are new blueshifted, broad and narrow UV absorption lines, which suggest that a dust-free, ionized obscurer located at the inner broad line region partially covers the central source. Despite the obscuration, we measure UV and optical continuum reverberation lags consistent with a centrally illuminated Shakura-Sunyaev thin accretion disk, and measure reverberation lags associated with the optical broad line region, as expected. However, in the first 55 days of the campaign, when the obscuration was becoming most extreme, we observe a de-coupling of the UV continuum and the UV broad emission line variability. The correlation recovers in the next 42 days of the campaign, as Mrk 817 enters a less obscured state. The short CIV and Ly alpha lags suggest that the accretion disk extends beyond the UV broad line region., Comment: 28 pages, 14 figures, submitted to ApJ. Comments welcome

Compact objects are expected to exist in the accretion disks of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs), and in the presence of such a dense environment ($\sim 10^{14}\,{\rm cm^{-3}}$), they will form a new kind of stellar population denoted as Accretion-Modified Stars (AMSs). This hypothesis is supported by recent LIGO/Virgo detection of the mergers of very high-mass stellar binary black holes (BHs). We show that the TZOs will be trapped by the SMBH-disk within a typical AGN lifetime. In the context of SMBH-disks, the rates of Bondi accretion onto BHs are $\sim 10^{9}L_{\rm Edd}/c^{2}$, where $L_{\rm Edd}$ is the Eddington luminosity and $c$ is the speed of light. Outflows developed from the hyper-Eddington accretion strongly impact the Bondi sphere and induce episodic accretion. We show that the hyper-Eddington accretion will be halted after an accretion interval of $t_{\rm a}\sim 10^{5}m_{1}\,$s, where $m_{1}=m_{\bullet}/10\sunm$ is the BH mass. The kinetic energy of the outflows accumulated during $t_{\rm a}$ is equivalent to 10 supernovae driving an explosion of the Bondi sphere and developing blast waves. We demonstrate that a synchrotron flare from relativistic electrons accelerated by the blast waves peaks in the soft X-ray band ($\sim 0.1\,$keV), significantly contributing to the radio, optical, UV, and soft X-ray emission of typical radio-quiet quasars. External inverse Compton scattering of the electrons peaks around $40\,$GeV and is detectable through {\it Fermi}-LAT. The flare, decaying with $t^{-6/5}$ with a few months, will appear as a slowly varying transient. The flares, occurring at a rate of a few per year in radio-quiet quasars, provide a new mechanism for explaining AGN variability., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, accepted

Recently, GRAVITY onboard the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) first spatially resolved the structure of the quasar 3C 273 with an unprecedented resolution of $\sim 10\mu$as. A new method of measuring parallax distances has been successfully applied to the quasar through joint analysis of spectroastrometry (SA) and reverberation mapping (RM) observation of its broad line region (BLR). The uncertainty of this SA and RM (SARM) measurement is about $16\%$ from real data, showing its great potential as a powerful tool for precision cosmology. In this paper, we carry out detailed analyses of mock data to study impacts of data qualities of SA observations on distance measurements and establish a quantitative relationship between statistical uncertainties of distances and relative errors of differential phases. We employ a circular disk model of BLR for the SARM analysis. We show that SARM analyses of observations generally generate reliable quasar distances, even for relatively poor SA measurements with error bars of $40\%$ at peaks of phases. Inclinations and opening angles of BLRs are the major parameters governing distance uncertainties. It is found that BLRs with inclinations $\gtrsim 10^{\circ}$ and opening angles $\lesssim 40^{\circ}$ are the most reliable regimes from SARM analysis for distance measurements. Through analysis of a mock sample of AGNs generated by quasar luminosity functions, we find that if the GRAVITY/GRAVITY+ can achieve a phase error of $0.1^{\circ}$ per baseline for targets with magnitudes $K \lesssim 11.5$, the SARM campaign can constrain $H_0$ to an uncertainty of $2\%$ by observing $60$ targets., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures, accepted by ApJS

We report the results of reverberation mapping three bright Seyfert galaxies, Mrk 79, NGC 3227, and Mrk 841, from a campaign conducted from December 2016 to May 2017 with the Wyoming Infrared Observatory (WIRO) 2.3-meter telescope. All three of these targets have shown asymmetric broad H$\beta$ emission lines in the past, although their emission lines were relatively symmetric during our observations. We measured H\beta\ time lags for all three targets and estimated masses of their black holes -- for the first time in the case of Mrk 841. For Mrk 79 and NGC 3227, the data are of sufficient quality to resolve distinct time lags as a function of velocity and to compute two-dimensional velocity-delay maps. Mrk 79 shows smaller time lags for high-velocity gas but the distribution is not symmetric, and its complex velocity-delay map could result from the combination of both inflowing and outflowing H\beta\ emitting disks that may be part of a single larger structure. NGC 3227 shows the largest time lags for blueshifted gas and the two-dimensional velocity-delay map suggests a disk with some inflow. We report on the results of a new spectroscopic monitoring campaign of the quasar PG 0026+129 at the Calar Alto Observatory 2.2m telescope from July 2017 to February 2020. Significant variations in the fluxes of the continuum and broad-emission lines, including H$\beta$ and He II, were observed in the first and third years, and clear time lags between them are measured. The broad H$\beta$ line profile consists of two Gaussian components: an intermediate-width H$\beta_{\rm IC}$ with a full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 1964$\pm$18 $\rm km~s^{-1}$ and another very broad H$\beta_{\rm VBC}$ with a FWHM of 7570$\pm$83 $\rm km~s^{-1}$. H$\beta_{\rm IC}$ has long time lags of $\sim$40--60 days in the rest frame, while H$\beta_{\rm VBC}$ shows nearly zero time delay with respect to the optical continuum at 5100 \AA. The velocity-resolved delays show consistent results: lags of $\sim$30--50 days at the core of the broad H$\beta$ line and roughly zero lags at the wings. H$\beta_{\rm IC}$ has a redshift of $\sim$400 $\rm km~s^{-1}$ which seems to be stable for nearly 30 years by comparing with archived spectra, and may originate from an infall. The root mean square (rms) spectrum of H$\beta_{\rm VBC}$ shows a double-peaked profile with brighter blue peak and extended red wing in the first year, which matches the signature of a thin disk. Both the double-peaked profile and the near-zero lag suggest that H$\beta_{\rm VBC}$ comes from a region associated with the part of the accretion disc that emits the optical continuum. Adopting the FWHM (in the rms spectrum) and the time lag measured for the total H$\beta$ line, and a virial factor of 1.5, we obtain a virial mass of $2.89_{-0.69}^{+0.60} \times10^7 M_{\odot}$ for the central black hole in this quasar., Comment: 21 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We performed an intensive accretion disk reverberation mapping campaign on the high accretion rate active galactic nucleus Mrk 142 in early 2019. Mrk 142 was monitored with the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory for 4 months in X-rays and 6 UV/optical filters. Ground-based photometric monitoring was obtained from the Las Cumbres Observatory, Liverpool Telescope and Dan Zowada Memorial Observatory in ugriz filters and the Yunnan Astronomical Observatory in V. Mrk 142 was highly variable throughout, displaying correlated variability across all wavelengths. We measure significant time lags between the different wavelength light curves, finding that through the UV and optical the wavelength-dependent lags, $\tau(\lambda)$, generally follow the relation $\tau(\lambda) \propto \lambda^{4/3}$, as expected for the $T\propto R^{-3/4}$ profile of a steady-state optically-thick, geometrically-thin accretion disk, though can also be fit by $\tau(\lambda) \propto \lambda^{2}$, as expected for a slim disk. The exceptions are the u and U band, where an excess lag is observed, as has been observed in other AGN and attributed to continuum emission arising in the broad-line region. Furthermore, we perform a flux-flux analysis to separate the constant and variable components of the spectral energy distribution, finding that the flux-dependence of the variable component is consistent with the $f_\nu\propto\nu^{1/3}$ spectrum expected for a geometrically-thin accretion disk. Moreover, the X-ray to UV lag is significantly offset from an extrapolation of the UV/optical trend, with the X-rays showing a poorer correlation with the UV than the UV does with the optical. We investigate whether the hard X-ray photon index (${\Gamma}$) versus accretion rate correlation for super-Eddington accreting quasars is different from that for sub-Eddington accreting quasars. We construct a sample of 113 bright quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 14 quasar catalog, including 38 quasars as the super-Eddington subsample and 75 quasars as the sub-Eddington subsample. We derive black-hole masses using a simple-epoch virial mass formula based on the ${\rm H\beta}$ lines, and we use the standard thin disk model to derive the dimensionless accretion rates ($\dot{\mathscr{M}}$) for our sample. The X-ray data for these quasars are collected from the Chandra and XMM-Newton archives. We fit the hard X-ray spectra using a single power-law model to obtain ${\Gamma}$ values. We find a statistically significant ($R_{\rm S}=0.43$, $p=7.75\times{10}^{-3}$) correlation between ${\Gamma}$ and $\dot{\mathscr{M}}$ for the super-Eddington subsample. The ${\Gamma}$-$\dot{\mathscr{M}}$ correlation for the sub-Eddington subsample is also significant, but weaker ($R_{\rm S}=0.30$, $p=9.98\times{10}^{-3}$). Linear regression analysis shows that ${\rm \Gamma}=(0.34\pm0.11){\rm log}{\dot{\mathscr{M}}}+(1.71\pm0.17)$ and ${\rm \Gamma}=(0.09\pm0.04){\rm log}{\dot{\mathscr{M}}}+(1.93\pm0.04)$ for the super- and sub-Eddington subsamples, respectively. The ${\Gamma}$-$\dot{\mathscr{M}}$ correlations of the two subsamples are different, suggesting different disk-corona connections in these two types of systems. We propose one qualitative explanation of the steeper ${\Gamma}$-$\dot{\mathscr{M}}$ correlation in the super-Eddington regime that involves larger seed photon fluxes received by the compact coronae from the thick disks in super-Eddington accreting quasars., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

As one of the most interesting Seyfert 1 galaxies, PG 2130+099 has been the target of several reverberation mapping (RM) campaigns over the years. However, its measured broad H$\beta$ line responses have been inconsistent, with time lags of $\sim$200 days, $\sim$25 days, and $\sim$10 days being reported for different epochs while its optical luminosity changed no more than 40%. To investigate this issue, we conducted a new RM-campaign with homogenous and high cadence (about $\sim$3 days) for two years during 2017--2019 to measure the kinematics and structure of the ionized gas. We successfully detected time lags of broad H$\beta$, He II, He I, and Fe II lines with respect to the varying 5100\AA continuum, revealing a stratified structure that is likely virialized with Keplerian kinematics in the first year of observations, but an inflow kinematics of the broad-line region from the second year. With a central black hole mass of $0.97_{-0.18}^{+0.15}\times 10^7~M_{\odot}$, PG 2130+099 has an accretion rate of $10^{2.1\pm0.5}L_{\rm Edd}c^{-2}$, where $L_{\rm Edd}$ is the Eddington luminosity and $c$ is speed of light, implying that it is a super-Eddington accretor and likely possesses a slim, rather than thin, accretion disk. We developed a spectroscopic monitoring project to investigate the kinematics of the broad-line region (BLR) in active galactic nuclei (AGN) with ultra-fast outflows (UFOs). Mrk~79 is a radio-quiet AGN with UFOs and warm absorbers, had been monitored by three reverberation mapping (RM) campaigns, but its BLR kinematics is not understood yet. In this paper, we report the results from a new RM-campaign of Mrk~79, which was undertaken by Lijiang 2.4-m telescope. Mrk~79 is seeming to come out the faint state, the mean flux approximates a magnitude fainter than historical record. We successfully measured the lags of the broad emission lines including H$\beta~\lambda4861$, H$\gamma~\lambda4340$, He II $\lambda4686$ and He I $\lambda5876$ with respect to the varying AGN continuum. Based on the broad H$\beta~\lambda4861$ line, we measured black hole (BH) mass of $M_{\bullet}=5.13^{+1.57}_{-1.55}\times10^{7}M_{\odot}$, estimated accretion rates of ${\dot{M}_{\bullet}}=(0.05\pm0.02)~L_{\rm Edd}~c^{-2}$, indicating that Mrk~79 is a sub-Eddington accretor. We found that Mrk~79 deviates from the canonical Radius$-$Luminosity relationship. The marginal blueshift of the broad He II $\lambda4686$ line detected from rms spectrum indicates outflow of high-ionization gas. The velocity-resolved lag profiles of the broad H$\gamma~\lambda4340$, H$\beta~\lambda4861$, and He I $\lambda5876$ lines show similar signatures that the largest lag occurs in the red wing of the lines then the lag decreases to both sides. These signatures should suggest that the BLR of Keplerian motion probably exists the outflow gas motion. All findings including UFOs, warm absorbers, and the kinematics of high- and low-ionization BLR, may provide an indirect evidence that the BLR of Mrk~79 probably originates from disk wind., Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The radius-luminosity (R-L) relationship of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) established by the reverberation mapping (RM) observations has been widely used as a single-epoch black hole mass estimator in the research of large AGN samples. However, the recent RM campaigns discovered that the AGNs with high accretion rates show shorter time lags by factors of a few comparing with the predictions from the R-L relationship. The explanation of the shortened time lags has not been finalized yet. We collect 8 different single-epoch spectral properties to investigate how the shortening of the time lags correlate with those properties and to understand what is the origin of the shortened lags. We find that the flux ratio between Fe II and H$\beta$ emission lines shows the most prominent correlation, thus confirm that accretion rate is the main driver for the shortened lags. In addition, we establish a new scaling relation including the relative strength of Fe II emission. 3C 273 is an intensively monitored flat-spectrum radio quasar with both a beamed jet and blue bump together with broad emission lines. The coexistence of the comparably prominent jet and accretion disk leads to complicated variability properties. Recent reverberation mapping monitoring for 3C 273 revealed that the optical continuum shows a distinct long-term trend that does not have a corresponding echo in the Hbeta fluxes. We compile multi-wavelength monitoring data from the Swift archive and other ground-based programs and clearly find two components of emissions at optical wavelength. One component stems from the accretion disk itself and the other component can be ascribed to the jet contribution, which also naturally accounts for the non-echoed trend in reverberation mapping data. We develop an approach to decouple the optical emissions from the jet and accretion disk in 3C 273 with the aid of multi-wavelength monitoring data. By assuming the disk emission has a negligible polarization in consideration of the low inclination of the jet, the results show that the jet contributes a fraction of ~10% at the minimum and up to ~40% at the maximum to the total optical emissions. This is the first time to provide a physical interpretation to the "detrending" manipulation conventionally adopted in reverberation mapping analysis. Distance measurements for extragalactic objects are a fundamental problem in astronomy and cosmology. In the era of precision cosmology, we urgently need better measurements of cosmological distances to observationally test the increasing $H_{0}$ tension of the Hubble constant measured from different tools. Using spectroastrometry, GRAVITY at The Very Large Telescope Interferometer successfully revealed the structure, kinematics and angular sizes of the broad-line region (BLR) of 3C 273 with an unprecedentedly high spatial resolution. Fortunately, reverberation mapping (RM) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) reliably provides linear sizes of their BLRs. Here we report a joint analysis of spectroastrometry and RM observations to measure AGN distances. We apply this analysis to 3C 273 observed by both GRAVITY and an RM campaign,and find an angular distance of $551.5_{-78.7}^{+97.3}\, {\rm Mpc}$ and $H_{0}=71.5_{-10.6}^{+11.9}\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}\,Mpc^{-1}}$. Advantages of the analysis are 1) its pure geometrical measurements and 2) it simultaneously yields mass of the central black hole in the BLR. Moreover, we can conveniently repeat measurements of selected AGNs to efficiently reduce the statistical and systematic errors. Future observations of a reasonably sized sample ($\sim 30$ AGNs) will provide distances of the AGNs and hence a new way of measuring $H_{0}$ with a high precision $\left(\lesssim 3\%\right)$ to test the $H_{0}$ tension., Comment: 52pages, 9 figures

We report the discovery of extreme X-ray variability in a type 1 quasar: SDSS J$075101.42+291419.1$. It has a black hole mass of $1.6\times 10^7~\rm M_\odot$ measured from reverberation mapping (RM), and the black hole is accreting with a super-Eddington accretion rate. Its XMM-Newton observation in 2015 May reveals a flux drop by a factor of $\sim 22$ with respect to the Swift observation in 2013 May when it showed a typical level of X-ray emission relative to its UV/optical emission. The lack of correlated UV variability results in a steep X-ray-to-optical power-law slope ($\alpha_{\rm OX}$) of -1.97 in the low X-ray flux state, corresponding to an X-ray weakness factor of 36.2 at rest-frame 2 keV relative to its UV/optical luminosity. The mild UV/optical continuum and emission-line variability also suggest that the accretion rate did not change significantly. A single power-law model modified by Galactic absorption describes well the $0.3-10$ keV spectra of the X-ray observations in general. The spectral fitting reveals steep spectral shapes with $\Gamma\approx3$. We search for active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with such extreme X-ray variability in the literature and find that most of them are narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies and quasars with high accretion rates. The fraction of extremely X-ray variable objects among super-Eddington accreting AGNs is estimated to be $\approx 15-24\%$. We discuss two possible scenarios, disk reflection and partial covering absorption, to explain the extreme X-ray variability of SDSS J$075101.42+291419.1$. We report results of the first reverberation mapping campaign of I Zwicky 1 during $2014$-$2016$, which showed unambiguous reverberations of the broad H$\beta$ line emission to the varying optical continuum. From analysis using several methods, we obtain a reverberation lag of $\tau_{\rm H\beta}=37.2^{+4.5}_{-4.9}\,$ days. Taking a virial factor of $f_{_{\rm BLR}}=1$, we find a black hole mass of $M_{\bullet}=9.30_{-1.38}^{+1.26}\times 10^6 M_{\odot}$ from the mean spectra. The accretion rate is estimated to be $203.9_{-65.8}^{+61.0}\,L_{\rm Edd}c^{-2}$, suggesting a super-Eddington accretor, where $L_{\rm Edd}$ is the Eddington luminosity and $c$ is the speed of light. By decomposing {\it Hubble Space Telescope} images, we find that the stellar mass of the bulge of its host galaxy is $\log (M_{\rm bulge}/M_{\odot}) = \rm 10.92\pm 0.07$. This leads to a black hole to bulge mass ratio of $\sim 10^{-4}$, which is significantly smaller than that of classical bulges and elliptical galaxies. After subtracting the host contamination from the observed luminosity, we find that I Zw 1 follows the empirical $R_{\rm BLR}\propto L_{5100}^{1/2}$ relation., Comment: accepted by APJ

We compiled a sample of 73 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with reverberation mapping (RM) observations from RM campaigns including our ongoing campaign of monitoring super-Eddington accreting massive black holes (SEAMBHs). This sample covers a large range of black hole (BH) mass $(M_{\bullet}=10^{6-9}~M_\odot)$, dimensionless accretion rates $(\dot{\mathscr{M}}=10^{-2.7}-10^{2.7})$ and 5100~\AA~luminosity $(L_{5100}=10^{42-46}~\rm erg~s^{-1})$, allowing us to systematically study the AGN variability and their relations with BH mass, accretion rates, and optical luminosity. We employed the damped random walk (DRW) model to delineate the optical variability of continuum at 5100~\AA~and obtained damped variability timescale ($\tau_{\rm d}$) and amplitude ($\sigma_{\rm d}$) using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method. We also estimated the traditional variability amplitudes ($F_{\rm var}$), which provide a model-independent measure and therefore are used to test the DRW results. We found that AGN variability characteristics are generally correlated with $(M_{\bullet},\dot{\mathscr{M}},L_{5100})$. These correlations are smooth from sub-Eddington to super-Eddington accretion AGNs, probably implying that the AGN variability may be caused by the same physical mechanism., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables, after ApJ proof
