Large language models (LLMs) gained immense popularity due to their impressive capabilities in unstructured conversations. However, they underperform compared to previous approaches in task-oriented dialogue (TOD), wherein reasoning and accessing external information are crucial. Empowering LLMs with advanced prompting strategies such as reasoning and acting (ReAct) has shown promise in solving complex tasks traditionally requiring reinforcement learning. In this work, we apply the ReAct strategy to guide LLMs performing TOD. We evaluate ReAct-based LLMs (ReAct-LLMs) both in simulation and with real users. While ReAct-LLMs seem to underperform state-of-the-art approaches in simulation, human evaluation indicates higher user satisfaction rate compared to handcrafted systems despite having a lower success rate.

Automatic metrics are extensively used to evaluate natural language processing systems. However, there has been increasing focus on how they are used and reported by practitioners within the field. In this paper, we have conducted a survey on the use of automatic metrics, focusing particularly on natural language generation (NLG) tasks. We inspect which metrics are used as well as why they are chosen and how their use is reported. Our findings from this survey reveal significant shortcomings, including inappropriate metric usage, lack of implementation details and missing correlations with human judgements. Existing explanation methods for image classification struggle to provide faithful and plausible explanations. This paper addresses this issue by proposing a post-hoc natural language explanation method that can be applied to any CNN-based classifier without altering its training process or affecting predictive performance. By analysing influential neurons and the corresponding activation maps, the method generates a faithful description of the classifier's decision process in the form of a structured meaning representation, which is then converted into text by a language model. Through this pipeline approach, the generated explanations are grounded in the neural network architecture, providing accurate insight into the classification process while remaining accessible to non-experts. Experimental results show that the NLEs constructed by our method are significantly more plausible and faithful. This paper presents teaching materials, particularly assignments and ideas for classroom activities, from a new course on large language models (LLMs) taught at Charles University. We present factgenie: a framework for annotating and visualizing word spans in textual model outputs. Annotations can capture various span-based phenomena such as semantic inaccuracies or irrelevant text. With factgenie, the annotations can be collected both from human crowdworkers and large language models. Text style transfer (TST) is an important task in controllable text generation, which aims to control selected attributes of language use, such as politeness, formality, or sentiment, without altering the style-independent content of the text. The field has received considerable research attention in recent years and has already been covered in several reviews, but the focus has mostly been on the development of new algorithms and learning from different types of data (supervised, unsupervised, out-of-domain, etc.) and not so much on the application side. However, TST-related technologies are gradually reaching a production- and deployment-ready level, and therefore, the inclusion of the application perspective in TST research becomes crucial. Similarly, the often overlooked ethical considerations of TST technology have become a pressing issue. This paper presents a comprehensive review of TST applications that have been researched over the years, using both traditional linguistic approaches and more recent deep learning methods. We discuss current challenges, future research directions, and ethical implications of TST applications in text generation. By providing a holistic overview of the landscape of TST applications, we hope to stimulate further research and contribute to a better understanding of the potential as well as ethical considerations associated with TST.

Text Style Transfer (TST) is a pivotal task in natural language generation to manipulate text style attributes while preserving style-independent content. The attributes targeted in TST can vary widely, including politeness, authorship, mitigation of offensive language, modification of feelings, and adjustment of text formality. TST has become a widely researched topic with substantial advancements in recent years. Homogeneous geodesics of homogeneous Finsler metrics derived from two or more Riemannian geodesic orbit metrics are investigated. For a broad newly defined family of positively related Riemannian geodesic orbit metrics, geodesic lemma is proved and it is shown that the derived Finsler metrics have also geodesic orbit property. These Finsler metrics belong to the newly defined class of the $\alpha_i$-type metrics which includes in particular the $(\alpha_1,\alpha_2)$ metrics. Geodesic graph for the sphere ${\mathrm{S}}^7={\mathrm{Sp(2)}}{\mathrm{U}}(1)/{\mathrm{Sp(1)}{\mathrm{diag}}{\mathrm{U}}(1)}$ with geodesic orbit Finsler metrics of the new type $(\alpha_1,\alpha_2,\alpha_3)$, arising from two or more Riemannian geodesic orbit metrics, is analyzed in detail. This type of metrics on $S^7$ is one of the missing cases in a previously published classification of geodesic orbit metrics on spheres.

We analyze the performance of large language models (LLMs) on Text Style Transfer (TST), specifically focusing on sentiment transfer and text detoxification across three languages: English, Hindi, and Bengali. Text Style Transfer involves modifying the linguistic style of a text while preserving its core content. We evaluate the capabilities of pre-trained LLMs using zero-shot and few-shot prompting as well as parameter-efficient finetuning on publicly available datasets. Our evaluation using automatic metrics, GPT-4 and human evaluations reveals that while some prompted LLMs perform well in English, their performance in on other languages (Hindi, Bengali) remains average. However, finetuning significantly improves results compared to zero-shot and few-shot prompting, making them comparable to previous state-of-the-art. This underscores the necessity of dedicated datasets and specialized models for effective TST.

Text style transfer (TST) involves altering the linguistic style of a text while preserving its core content. This paper focuses on sentiment transfer, a popular TST subtask, across a spectrum of Indian languages: Hindi, Magahi, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Odia, Telugu, and Urdu, expanding upon previous work on English-Bangla sentiment transfer (Mukherjee et al., 2023). We introduce dedicated datasets of 1,000 positive and 1,000 negative style-parallel sentences for each of these eight languages. We then evaluate the performance of various benchmark models categorized into parallel, non-parallel, cross-lingual, and shared learning approaches, including the Llama2 and GPT-3.5 large language models (LLMs). Our experiments highlight the significance of parallel data in TST and demonstrate the effectiveness of the Masked Style Filling (MSF) approach (Mukherjee et al., 2023) in non-parallel techniques. Moreover, cross-lingual and joint multilingual learning methods show promise, offering insights into selecting optimal models tailored to the specific language and task requirements. To the best of our knowledge, this work represents the first comprehensive exploration of the TST task as sentiment transfer across a diverse set of languages.

We report ferromagnetic ordering at $T_\mathrm {C}=1.3\,$K in the quasi-two dimensional magnet EuAl$_{12}$O$_{19}$ with large spins $S=7/2$. This ferromagnetic state was characterized by magnetization and specific heat measurements and the experimental results were compared with classical Monte Carlo simulations. They reveal a strong single ion anisotropy leading to an uniaxial spontaneous magnetization along the $c$ axis. Furthermore the application of a magnetic field in the hard magnetization plane $ab$ reduces the Curie temperature and it reaches zero temperature at a magnetic field of $\mu_\mathrm{0} H_c \approx 0.5\,$T.

It is undeniable that citizen science contributes to the advancement of various fields of study. There are now software tools that facilitate the development of citizen science apps. However, apps developed with these tools rely on individual human skills to correctly collect useful data. Machine learning (ML)-aided apps provide on-field guidance to citizen scientists on data collection tasks. However, these apps rely on server-side ML support, and therefore need a reliable internet connection. Furthermore, the development of citizen science apps with ML support requires a significant investment of time and money. For some projects, this barrier may preclude the use of citizen science effectively. We present a platform that democratizes citizen science by making it accessible to a much broader audience of both researchers and participants. The SmartCS platform allows one to create citizen science apps with ML support quickly and without coding skills. Apps developed using SmartCS have client-side ML support, making them usable in the field, even when there is no internet connection. The client-side ML helps educate users to better recognize the subjects, thereby enabling high-quality data collection. We present several citizen science apps created using SmartCS, some of which were conceived and created by high school students.

Vortices are studied in various scientific disciplines, offering insights into fluid flow behavior. Visualizing the boundary of vortices is crucial for understanding flow phenomena and detecting flow irregularities. This paper addresses the challenge of accurately extracting vortex boundaries using deep learning techniques. While existing methods primarily train on velocity components, we propose a novel approach incorporating particle trajectories (streamlines or pathlines) into the learning process. By leveraging the regional/local characteristics of the flow field captured by streamlines or pathlines, our methodology aims to enhance the accuracy of vortex boundary extraction., Comment: Under review

This paper focuses on text detoxification, i.e., automatically converting toxic text into non-toxic text. This task contributes to safer and more respectful online communication and can be considered a Text Style Transfer (TST) task, where the text style changes while its content is preserved. We present three approaches: knowledge transfer from a similar task, multi-task learning approach, combining sequence-to-sequence modeling with various toxicity classification tasks, and delete and reconstruct approach. To support our research, we utilize a dataset provided by Dementieva et al.(2021), which contains multiple versions of detoxified texts corresponding to toxic texts. In our experiments, we selected the best variants through expert human annotators, creating a dataset where each toxic sentence is paired with a single, appropriate detoxified version. Additionally, we introduced a small Hindi parallel dataset, aligning with a part of the English dataset, suitable for evaluation purposes. Natural Language Processing (NLP) research is increasingly focusing on the use of Large Language Models (LLMs), with some of the most popular ones being either fully or partially closed-source. The lack of access to model details, especially regarding training data, has repeatedly raised concerns about data contamination among researchers. Several attempts have been made to address this issue, but they are limited to anecdotal evidence and trial and error. Additionally, they overlook the problem of \emph{indirect} data leaking, where models are iteratively improved by using data coming from users. In this work, we conduct the first systematic analysis of work using OpenAI's GPT-3.5 and GPT-4, the most prominently used LLMs today, in the context of data contamination. By analysing 255 papers and considering OpenAI's data usage policy, we extensively document the amount of data leaked to these models during the first year after the model's release. We report that these models have been globally exposed to $\sim$4.7M samples from 263 benchmarks. At the same time, we document a number of evaluation malpractices emerging in the reviewed papers, such as unfair or missing baseline comparisons and reproducibility issues. We analyze the behaviors of open large language models (LLMs) on the task of data-to-text (D2T) generation, i.e., generating coherent and relevant text from structured data. To avoid the issue of LLM training data contamination with standard benchmarks, we design Quintd - a tool for collecting novel structured data records from public APIs. We find that open LLMs (Llama 2, Mistral, and Zephyr) can generate fluent and coherent texts in zero-shot settings from data in common formats collected with Quintd. However, we show that the semantic accuracy of the outputs is a major issue: both according to human annotators and our reference-free metric based on GPT-4, more than 80% of the outputs of open LLMs contain at least one semantic error. Text sentiment transfer aims to flip the sentiment polarity of a sentence (positive to negative or vice versa) while preserving its sentiment-independent content. Although current models show good results at changing the sentiment, content preservation in transferred sentences is insufficient. In this paper, we present a sentiment transfer model based on polarity-aware denoising, which accurately controls the sentiment attributes in generated text, preserving the content to a great extent and helping to balance the style-content trade-off. Our proposed model is structured around two key stages in the sentiment transfer process: better representation learning using a shared encoder and sentiment-controlled generation using separate sentiment-specific decoders. Linguistic entrainment, or alignment, represents a phenomenon where linguistic patterns employed by conversational participants converge to one another. While entrainment has been shown to produce a more natural user experience, most dialogue systems do not have any provisions for it. In this work, we introduce methods for achieving dialogue entrainment in a GPT-2-based end-to-end task-oriented dialogue system through the utilization of shared vocabulary. We experiment with training instance weighting, entrainment-specific loss, and additional conditioning to generate responses that align with the user. We demonstrate that all three approaches produce significantly better entrainment than the base, non-entrainment-optimized model, as confirmed by both automated and manual evaluation metrics., Comment: Accepted to NAACL Findings 2024

Hallucination of text ungrounded in the input is a well-known problem in neural data-to-text generation. Many methods have been proposed to mitigate it, but they typically require altering model architecture or collecting additional data, and thus cannot be easily applied to an existing model. In this paper, we explore a new way to mitigate hallucinations by combining the probabilistic output of a generator language model (LM) with the output of a special "text critic" classifier, which guides the generation by assessing the match between the input data and the text generated so far. Our method does not need any changes to the underlying LM's architecture or training procedure and can thus be combined with any model and decoding operating on word probabilities. The critic does not need any additional training data, using the base LM's training data and synthetic negative examples. This work presents our efforts to reproduce the results of the human evaluation experiment presented in the paper of Vamvas and Sennrich (2022), which evaluated an automatic system detecting over- and undertranslations (translations containing more or less information than the original) in machine translation (MT) outputs. Despite the high quality of the documentation and code provided by the authors, we discuss some problems we found in reproducing the exact experimental setup and offer recommendations for improving reproducibility. This paper describes the systems submitted by team6 for ChatEval, the DSTC 11 Track 4 competition. We present three different approaches to predicting turn-level qualities of chatbot responses based on large language models (LLMs). We report improvement over the baseline using dynamic few-shot examples from a vector store for the prompts for ChatGPT. We also analyze the performance of the other two approaches and report needed improvements for future work. We developed the three systems over just two weeks, showing the potential of LLMs for this task. An ablation study conducted after the challenge deadline shows that the new Llama 2 models are closing the performance gap between ChatGPT and open-source LLMs. However, we find that the Llama 2 models do not benefit from few-shot examples in the same way as ChatGPT., Comment: Accepted to DSTC11 workshop https://dstc11.dstc.community/

The aim of this article is to investigate the fine-tuning potential of natural language inference (NLI) data to improve information retrieval and ranking. We demonstrate this for both English and Polish languages, using data from one of the largest Polish e-commerce sites and selected open-domain datasets. We employ both monolingual and multilingual sentence encoders fine-tuned by a supervised method utilizing contrastive loss and NLI data. Our results point to the fact that NLI fine-tuning increases the performance of the models in both tasks and both languages, with the potential to improve mono- and multilingual models. Finally, we investigate uniformity and alignment of the embeddings to explain the effect of NLI-based fine-tuning for an out-of-domain use-case.

Hallucinations in text generation occur when the system produces text that is not grounded in the input. In this work, we tackle the problem of hallucinations in neural chart summarization. Our analysis shows that the target side of chart summarization training datasets often contains additional information, leading to hallucinations. We propose a natural language inference (NLI) based method to preprocess the training data and show through human evaluation that our method significantly reduces hallucinations. We also found that shortening long-distance dependencies in the input sequence and adding chart-related information like title and legends improves the overall performance., Comment: To be presented in INLG 2023

We present a simple modification of the direct-forcing immersed boundary method (IBM) proposed by Uhlmann [J. Comput. Phys, 2005] in order to enable it to be applied to particulate flows with solid-to-fluid density ratios around unity. The main difference with respect to the original formulation lies in the particle velocity update which is performed directly after the preliminary velocity field has been computed in the absence of any IBM volume forcing term. In addition, we apply the forcing term to the entire space occupied by the immersed solid object (instead of to the vicinity of its interface only). The present approach requires the evaluation of integrals of the velocity field over the volume occupied by the solid particle, which are evaluated efficiently as sums over the respective quantities available at particle-attached force points. The resulting method can be used seamlessly for density ratios down to $\rho_p/\rho_f>0.5$. The new formulation has been validated using three configurations: (i) lateral migration of a neutrally buoyant circular particle in two-dimensional Couette flow; (ii) the release from rest of a neutrally buoyant sphere in a free stream; (iii) the release of a particle in a free stream after an initial phase in which it is translationally fixed with an imposed angular velocity. In all three test cases the present IBM formulation yields a very good agreement with the available reference data. Thus, the proposed approach is a cost-efficient and accurate modification of the original method which allows for the simulation of fluid systems involving density-matched solid particles., Comment: accepted for publication in Computers & Fluids

We report our efforts in identifying a set of previous human evaluations in NLP that would be suitable for a coordinated study examining what makes human evaluations in NLP more/less reproducible. We present our results and findings, which include that just 13\% of papers had (i) sufficiently low barriers to reproduction, and (ii) enough obtainable information, to be considered for reproduction, and that all but one of the experiments we selected for reproduction was discovered to have flaws that made the meaningfulness of conducting a reproduction questionable. As a result, we had to change our coordinated study design from a reproduce approach to a standardise-then-reproduce-twice approach. Our overall (negative) finding that the great majority of human evaluations in NLP is not repeatable and/or not reproducible and/or too flawed to justify reproduction, paints a dire picture, but presents an opportunity for a rethink about how to design and report human evaluations in NLP., Comment: 5 pages plus appendix, 4 tables, 1 figure. We introduce an approach for calculating perturbative corrections to the ring-polymer instanton approximation to tunneling splittings (RPI+PC), by computing higher-order terms in the asymptotic expansion in $\hbar$. The resulting method goes beyond standard instanton theory by using information on the third and fourth derivatives of the potential along the tunneling path to include additional anharmonic effects. This leads to significant improvements both in systems with low barriers and in systems with anharmonic modes. We demonstrate the applicability of RPI+PC to molecular systems by computing the tunneling splitting in full-dimensional malonaldehyde and a deuterated derivative. Comparing to both experiment and recent quantum-mechanical benchmark results, we find that our perturbative correction reduces the error from -11% to 2% for hydrogen transfer and performs even better for the deuterated case. This makes our approach more accurate than previous calculations using diffusion Monte Carlo and path-integral molecular dynamics, while being more computationally efficient., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures

Instructions-tuned Large Language Models (LLMs) gained recently huge popularity thanks to their ability to interact with users through conversation. In this work we aim to evaluate their ability to complete multi-turn tasks and interact with external databases in the context of established task-oriented dialogue benchmarks. We show that for explicit belief state tracking, LLMs underperform compared to specialized task-specific models. Nevertheless, they show ability to guide the dialogue to successful ending if given correct slot values. Invariant geodesic orbit Finsler $(\alpha,\beta)$ metrics $F$ which arise from Riemannian geodesic orbit metrics $\alpha$ on spheres are determined. The relation of Riemannian geodesic graphs with Finslerian geodesic graphs proved in a previous work is now illustrated with explicit constructions. Interesting examples are found such that $(G/H,\alpha)$ is Riemannian geodesic orbit space, but for the geodesic orbit property of $(G/H,F)$ the isometry group has to be extended. It is also shown that projective spaces other than ${\mathbb{R}}P^n$ do not admit invariant purely Finsler $(\alpha,\beta)$ metrics.

Heterogenity of data-to-text generation datasets limits the research on data-to-text generation systems. We present TabGenie - a toolkit which enables researchers to explore, preprocess, and analyze a variety of data-to-text generation datasets through the unified framework of table-to-text generation. In TabGenie, all the inputs are represented as tables with associated metadata. The tables can be explored through the web interface, which also provides an interactive mode for debugging table-to-text generation, facilitates side-by-side comparison of generated system outputs, and allows easy exports for manual analysis. Furthermore, TabGenie is equipped with command line processing tools and Python bindings for unified dataset loading and processing. We present a hybrid machine learning and flow analysis feature detection method, RipViz, to extract rip currents from stationary videos. Rip currents are dangerous strong currents that can drag beachgoers out to sea. Most people are either unaware of them or do not know what they look like. In some instances, even trained personnel such as lifeguards have difficulty identifying them. RipViz produces a simple, easy to understand visualization of rip location overlaid on the source video. With RipViz, we first obtain an unsteady 2D vector field from the stationary video using optical flow. Movement at each pixel is analyzed over time. At each seed point, sequences of short pathlines, rather a single long pathline, are traced across the frames of the video to better capture the quasi-periodic flow behavior of wave activity. Because of the motion on the beach, the surf zone, and the surrounding areas, these pathlines may still appear very cluttered and incomprehensible. Furthermore, lay audiences are not familiar with pathlines and may not know how to interpret them. To address this, we treat rip currents as a flow anomaly in an otherwise normal flow. To learn about the normal flow behavior, we train an LSTM autoencoder with pathline sequences from normal ocean, foreground, and background movements. During test time, we use the trained LSTM autoencoder to detect anomalous pathlines (i.e., those in the rip zone). The origination points of such anomalous pathlines, over the course of the video, are then presented as points within the rip zone. RipViz is fully automated and does not require user input. We present MooseNet, a trainable speech metric that predicts the listeners' Mean Opinion Score (MOS). We propose a novel approach where the Probabilistic Linear Discriminative Analysis (PLDA) generative model is used on top of an embedding obtained from a self-supervised learning (SSL) neural network (NN) model. We show that PLDA works well with a non-finetuned SSL model when trained only on 136 utterances (ca. one minute training time) and that PLDA consistently improves various neural MOS prediction models, even state-of-the-art models with task-specific fine-tuning. Our ablation study shows PLDA training superiority over SSL model fine-tuning in a low-resource scenario. We also improve SSL model fine-tuning using a convenient optimizer choice and additional contrastive and multi-task training objectives. Data collection is an integral part of any citizen science project. Given the wide variety of projects, some level of expertise or, alternatively, some guidance for novice participants can greatly improve the quality of the collected data. A significant portion of citizen science projects depends on visual data, where photos or videos of different subjects are needed. Often these visual data are collected from all over the world, including remote locations. In this article, we introduce an authoring platform for easily creating mobile apps for citizen science projects that are empowered with client-side machine learning (ML) guidance. The apps created with our platform can help participants recognize the correct data and increase the efficiency of the data collection process. We demonstrate the application of our proposed platform with two use cases: a rip current detection app for a planned pilot study and a detection app for biodiversity-related projects.

Pretrained language models (PLMs) for data-to-text (D2T) generation can use human-readable data labels such as column headings, keys, or relation names to generalize to out-of-domain examples. However, the models are well-known in producing semantically inaccurate outputs if these labels are ambiguous or incomplete, which is often the case in D2T datasets. In this paper, we expose this issue on the task of descibing a relation between two entities. For our experiments, we collect a novel dataset for verbalizing a diverse set of 1,522 unique relations from three large-scale knowledge graphs (Wikidata, DBPedia, YAGO). We find that although PLMs for D2T generation expectedly fail on unclear cases, models trained with a large variety of relation labels are surprisingly robust in verbalizing novel, unseen relations. XOR oblivious transfer (XOT) is a variant where the sender Alice has two bits, and a receiver Bob obtains either the first bit, the second bit, or their XOR. Bob should not learn anything more than this, and Alice should not learn what Bob has learnt. Perfect quantum OT with information-theoretic security is known to be impossible. We determine the smallest possible cheating probabilities for unrestricted dishonest parties in non-interactive quantum XOT protocols using symmetric pure states, and present an optimal protocol, which outperforms classical protocols. We also "reverse" this protocol, so that Bob becomes sender of a quantum state and Alice the receiver who measures it, while still implementing oblivious transfer from Alice to Bob. Cheating probabilities for both parties stay the same as for the unreversed protocol. We present a novel architecture for explainable modeling of task-oriented dialogues with discrete latent variables to represent dialogue actions. Our model is based on variational recurrent neural networks (VRNN) and requires no explicit annotation of semantic information. Unlike previous works, our approach models the system and user turns separately and performs database query modeling, which makes the model applicable to task-oriented dialogues while producing easily interpretable action latent variables. We show that our model outperforms previous approaches with less supervision in terms of perplexity and BLEU on three datasets, and we propose a way to measure dialogue success without the need for expert annotation. We introduce AARGH, an end-to-end task-oriented dialog system combining retrieval and generative approaches in a single model, aiming at improving dialog management and lexical diversity of outputs. The model features a new response selection method based on an action-aware training objective and a simplified single-encoder retrieval architecture which allow us to build an end-to-end retrieval-enhanced generation model where retrieval and generation share most of the parameters. On the MultiWOZ dataset, we show that our approach produces more diverse outputs while maintaining or improving state tracking and context-to-response generation performance, compared to state-of-the-art baselines., Comment: SIGDIAL 2022, with updated examples in Table 4

Evaluation in machine learning is usually informed by past choices, for example which datasets or metrics to use. This standardization enables the comparison on equal footing using leaderboards, but the evaluation choices become sub-optimal as better alternatives arise. This problem is especially pertinent in natural language generation which requires ever-improving suites of datasets, metrics, and human evaluation to make definitive claims. To make following best model evaluation practices easier, we introduce GEMv2. The new version of the Generation, Evaluation, and Metrics Benchmark introduces a modular infrastructure for dataset, model, and metric developers to benefit from each others work. GEMv2 supports 40 documented datasets in 51 languages. Models for all datasets can be evaluated online and our interactive data card creation and rendering tools make it easier to add new datasets to the living benchmark.

We present a novel approach to generating scripts by using agents with different personality types. To manage character interaction in the script, we employ simulated dramatic networks. Automatic and human evaluation on multiple criteria shows that our approach outperforms a vanilla-GPT2-based baseline.
