2. Evidential uncertainty sampling for active learning

Abstract

Recent studies in active learning, particularly in uncertainty sampling, have focused on the decomposition of model uncertainty into reducible and irreducible uncertainties. In this paper, the aim is to simplify the computational process while eliminating the dependence on observations. Crucially, the inherent uncertainty in the labels is considered, the uncertainty of the oracles. Two strategies are proposed, sampling by Klir uncertainty, which tackles the exploration-exploitation dilemma, and sampling by evidential epistemic uncertainty, which extends the concept of reducible uncertainty within the evidential framework, both using the theory of belief functions. Experimental results in active learning demonstrate that our proposed method can outperform uncertainty sampling.

Abstract

Crowdsourcing is the outsourcing of tasks to a crowd of contributors on a dedicated platform. The crowd on these platforms is very diversified and includes various profiles of contributors which generates data of uneven quality. However, majority voting, which is the aggregating method commonly used in platforms, gives equal weight to each contribution. To overcome this problem, we propose a method, MONITOR, which estimates the contributor's profile and aggregates the collected data by taking into account their possible imperfections thanks to the theory of belief functions. To do so, MONITOR starts by estimating the profile of the contributor through his qualification for the task and his behavior.Crowdsourcing campaigns have been carried out to collect the necessary data to test MONITOR on real data in order to compare it to existing approaches. The results of the experiments show that thanks to the use of the MONITOR method, we obtain a better rate of correct answer after aggregation of the contributions compared to the majority voting. Our contributions in this article are for the first time the proposal of a model that takes into account both the qualification of the contributor and his behavior in the estimation of his profile. For the second one, the weakening and the aggregation of the answers according to the estimated profiles.

Abstract

The theory of belief functions allows the fusion of imperfect data from different sources. Unfortunately, few real, imprecise and uncertain datasets exist to test approaches using belief functions. We have built real birds datasets thanks to the collection of numerous human contributions that we make available to the scientific community. The interest of our datasets is that they are made of human contributions, thus the information is therefore naturally uncertain and imprecise. These imperfections are given directly by the persons. This article presents the data and their collection through crowdsourcing and how to obtain belief functions from the data.

Abstract

Crowdsourcing platforms enable companies to propose tasks to a large crowd of users. The workers receive a compensation for their work according to the serious of the tasks they managed to accomplish. The evaluation of the quality of responses obtained from the crowd remains one of the most important problems in this context. Several methods have been proposed to estimate the expertise level of crowd workers. We propose an innovative measure of expertise assuming that we possess a dataset with an objective comparison of the items concerned. Our method is based on the definition of four factors with the theory of belief functions. We compare our method to the Fagin distance on a dataset from a real experiment, where users have to assess the quality of some audio recordings. Then, we propose to fuse both the Fagin distance and our expertise measure.

13. Designing a Belief Function-Based Accessibility Indicator to Improve Web Browsing for Disabled People

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to provide an accessibility measure of web-pages, in order to draw disabled users to the pages that have been designed to be ac-cessible to them. Our approach is based on the theory of belief functions, using data which are supplied by reports produced by automatic web content assessors that test the validity of criteria defined by the WCAG 2.0 guidelines proposed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) organization. These tools detect errors with gradual degrees of certainty and their results do not always converge. For these reasons, to fuse information coming from the reports, we choose to use an information fusion framework which can take into account the uncertainty and imprecision of infor-mation as well as divergences between sources. Our accessibility indicator covers four categories of deficiencies. To validate the theoretical approach in this context, we propose an evaluation completed on a corpus of 100 most visited French news websites, and 2 evaluation tools. The results obtained illustrate the interest of our accessibility indicator.

Abstract

International audience; In machine learning, training a classifier on large dataset requires an important amount of labels which is expensive in terms of human resources and money. A possible solution to this problem is to use crowdsourcing in order to label the data. Although, non-expert people do not always have the knowledge to do their work correctly, leading to introducing errors in labeling. Active learning offers a solution to the labeling cost by making the classifier choose the data it wants to label in order to reach good performance with fewer labels. By combining active learning and belief functions, it becomes possible to model the errors and uncertainty in labels. We propose a new sampling method implying belief entropies.; En apprentissage automatique, la performance d'un modèle supervisé dépend souvent du volume de donnéeś etiquetées. Entraîner un modèle sur un grand nombre de données nécessite donc l'étiquetage de beaucoup d'observations et requiert souvent une expertise coûteuse en temps et en argent. Une des solutions consiste alorsà externaliser le travail d'étiquetageà une foule de contributeurs dont les qualifications visa -vis du domaineétudié seront nécessairement inégales, occasionnant des erreurs d'étiquetage. L'apprentissage actif propose une solution au problème de coût lié auxétiquettes, en impliquant le classificateur dans le choix des données d'entraînement. Ce paradigme peutêtre combinéà la théorie des fonctions de croyance afin de modéliser l'incertitude dans l'étiquetage des données. Nous proposons dans cet article une méthode pour sélectionner les observationsà etiqueter, fondée sur des entropies crédibilistes.

Abstract

International audience; Active learning is a subfield of machine learning which allows to reduce the amount of data necessary to train a classifier. The training set is built in an iterative way such that only the most significant and informative data are used and labeled by an external person called oracle. It is furthermore possible to use active learning with the theory of belief functions in order to take erroneous labels due to the oracle's uncertainty and imprecision into account in order to limit their influence on the classifier's performance. In this article, we compare the classifier of the k nearest neighbours (kNN) to a variant based on belief functions from the theory of belief functions (EkNN), in a situation where some labels have been noised in order to model uncertain labels. We show that although the superiority of EkNN over kNN is not systematic, there are some interesting and modest results supporting the relevance of belief functions in active learning.

Abstract

Le crowdsourcing se définit par l'externalisation de tâches à une foule de contributeurs. La foule, très diversifiée sur ces plateformes, inclut des contri-buteurs de niveaux de qualification variables et qui réalisent la tâche de manière plus ou moins consciencieuse. Cette diversité de profils induit des contributions de qualité inégale. Afin de palier ce problème nous étudions une interface utili-sateur offrant aux contributeurs une plus grande capacité d'expression dans leurs réponses. Elle permet aux contributeurs de fournir une réponse imprécise en cas d'hésitation ainsi que de renseigner leur confiance dans leurs réponses. Cette interface a été déployée en demandant aux utilisateurs de répondre à des questions de difficulté variable et dont les réponses sont connues. Deux plages de difficulté ont été testées et nos résultats suggèrent que la certitude reportée par les utilisa-teurs est bien fonction de la difficulté absolue de la question, et non pas répartie de manière relative sur la plage de difficulté.

Abstract

Cet article présente les résultats d'une réflexion concernant les apports du langage naturel (LN) dans le domaine de la recherche d'information (RI). Cette réflexion a abouti au développement d'un mode de représentation permettant de modéliser l'intention du locuteur et d'effectuer une analyse contextuelle des énoncés. Cette représentation s'effectue à l'aide d'une structure hiérarchisée -du plus général au plus précis- appelée schéma d'intention du locuteur (SIL). Des mécanismes ont été définis afin d'effectuer des opérations liées aux changements de focalisation de l'utilisateur et notamment la transposition d'axiologie et la généralisation de caractéristiques. La structure des SIL permet ainsi une analyse plus fine des connecteurs, des expressions référentielles ainsi que de la négation contenus dans les énoncés.

35. An E3 Ubiquitin Ligase Localization Screen Uncovers DTX2 as a Novel ADP-Ribosylation-Dependent Regulator of DNA Double-Strand Break Repair.

Abstract

DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) elicit an elaborate response to signal damage and trigger repair via two major pathways: non-homologous end-joining (NHEJ), which functions throughout the interphase, and homologous recombination (HR), restricted to S/G2 phases. The DNA damage response (DDR) relies, on post-translational modifications of nuclear factors to coordinate the mending of breaks. Ubiquitylation of histones and chromatin-associated factors regulates DSB repair and numerous E3 ubiquitin ligases are involved in this process. Despite significant progress, our understanding of ubiquitin-mediated DDR regulation remains incomplete. Here, we have performed a localization screen to identify RING/U-box E3 ligases involved in genome maintenance. Our approach uncovered 7 novel E3 ligases that are recruited to microirradiation stripes, suggesting potential roles in DNA damage signaling and repair. Amongst these factors, the DELTEX family E3 ligase DTX2 is rapidly mobilized to lesions in a poly ADP-ribosylation-dependent manner. DTX2 is recruited and retained at DSBs via its WWE and DTC domains. In cells, both domains are required for optimal binding to mono and poly ADP-ribosylated proteins with WWEs playing a prominent role in this process. Supporting its involvement in DSB repair, DTX2 depletion decreases HR efficiency and moderately enhances NHEJ. Furthermore, DTX2 depletion impeded BRCA1 foci formation and increased 53BP1 accumulation at DSBs, suggesting a fine-tuning role for this E3 ligase in repair pathway choice. Finally, DTX2 depletion sensitized cancer cells to X-rays and PARP inhibition and these susceptibilities could be rescued by DTX2 re-expression.
