Abstract

The Orion molecular cloud complex harbours the nearest GMCs and site of high-mass star formation. Its YSO populations are thoroughly characterized. The region is therefore a prime target for the study of star formation. Here, we verify the performance of the SuperCAM 64 pixel heterodyne array on APEX. We give a descriptive overview of a set of wide-field CO(3-2) spectral cubes obtained towards the Orion GMC complex, aimed at characterizing the dynamics and structure of the extended molecular gas in diverse regions of the clouds, ranging from very active sites of clustered star formation in Orion B to comparatively quiet regions in southern Orion A. We present a 2.7 square degree (130pc$^2$) mapping survey in the CO(3-2) transition, obtained using SuperCAM on APEX at an angular resolution of 19'' (7600AU or 0.037pc at a distance of 400pc), covering L1622, NGC2071, NGC2068, OriB9, NGC2024, and NGC2023 in Orion B, and the southern part of the L1641 cloud in Orion A. We describe CO integrated emission and line moment maps and position-velocity diagrams and discuss a few sub-regions in some detail. Evidence for expanding bubbles is seen with lines splitting into double components, most prominently in NGC2024, where we argue that the bulk of the molecular gas is in the foreground of the HII region. High CO(3-2)/CO(1-0) line ratios reveal warm CO along the western edge of Orion B in the NGC2023/NGC2024 region facing the IC434 HII region. Multiple, well separated radial velocity components seen in L1641-S suggest that it consists of a sequence of clouds at increasingly larger distances. We find a small, spherical cloud - the 'Cow Nebula' globule - north of NGC2071. We trace high velocity line wings for the NGC2071-IR outflow and the NGC2024 CO jet. The protostellar dust core FIR4 (rather than FIR5) is the true driving source of the NGC2024 monopolar outflow., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

2. A multi component process evaluation of adolescents' experience of the .b Mindfulness in Schools Programme

Abstract

This multi component, non-randomised controlled study examined the effectiveness of the ten lesson .b Mindfulness in Schools Programme (MiSP), with adolescents aged 15-17 years (n = 73), attending Transition Year, at four Irish post primary schools, compared to students attending school as usual (n = 59). The study explored participation in the programme in relation to measures of depression, anxiety, anger, disruptive behaviour, self-concept, emotional regulation and mindfulness, as measured by the Beck Youth Inventories II, Difficulties in Emotions Regulation Scale (DERS) and the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ), pre and post intervention and at 6 month follow up. Repeated measures ANCOVAS revealed no statistically significant quantitative differences between the mindfulness and comparison conditions on any measure, at any time point, except that of anger F(1, 128) = 3.78, p < .05, η2 = .02. Correlational analysis of qualitative questionnaires administered at Time 2 and Time 3, and qualitative analysis of focus group discussions post intervention suggested that students viewed this programme to be acceptable, enjoyable, beneficial and feasible. Results are considered in relation to mindfulness research in general and the .b Mindfulness in Schools Programme (MiSP), in particular, and directions and recommendations for future research and practice are discussed.

Abstract

Handling visual complexity is a challenging problem in visualization owing to the subjectiveness of its definition and the difficulty in devising generalizable quantitative metrics. In this paper we address this challenge by measuring the visual complexity of two common forms of cluster-based visualizations: scatter plots and parallel coordinatess. We conceptualize visual complexity as a form of visual uncertainty, which is a measure of the degree of difficulty for humans to interpret a visual representation correctly. We propose an algorithm for estimating visual complexity for the aforementioned visualizations using Allen's interval algebra. We first establish a set of primitive 2-cluster cases in scatter plots and another set for parallel coordinatess based on symmetric isomorphism. We confirm that both are the minimal sets and verify the correctness of their members computationally. We score the uncertainty of each primitive case based on its topological properties, including the existence of overlapping regions, splitting regions and meeting points or edges. We compare a few optional scoring schemes against a set of subjective scores by humans, and identify the one that is the most consistent with the subjective scores. Finally, we extend the 2-cluster measure to k-cluster measure as a general purpose estimator of visual complexity for these two forms of cluster-based visualization.

6. Development of imaging methods for the lithium-pilocarpine model of epilepsy

Abstract

Anti-inflammatory therapies are promising candidates for the prevention of brain injury following prolonged seizures (status epilepticus). Biomarkers for therapy monitoring are needed to translate these recent findings to the clinic. The aim of this thesis was to develop imaging methods that can be used to monitor anti-inflammatory therapies and monitor disease progression following prolonged seizures. In order to achieve these goals, the lithium-pilocarpine model was used as a model of status epilepticus and novel MRI imaging methods were employed. Various imaging approaches including: quantitative, structural, molecular and functional imaging were tested for their possible investigative utility as imaging biomarkers for neuroprotective therapies. Alongside this, two different anti-inflammatory therapies were tested for their effectiveness to alter brain injury following status epilepticus. This thesis demonstrates that molecular imaging has potential to monitor neuroprotective therapies. Surprisingly, there was little evidence that the anti-inflammatory therapies tested here had beneficial effects. However, this thesis shows that employing novel imaging approaches and automated analysis methods can enable accurate in vivo assessment of disease altering therapies.

Abstract

The 250 MW Kidston Pumped Hydroelectric Storage (PHES) Project located in Queensland, is currently under construction and is the first pumped hydro project in Australia for over 40 years. It is also the first to convert a disused mine site into a PHES scheme. The project uses two former mining pits (Wises and Eldridge) as the upper and lower reservoirs respectively, which are connected to the underground power generation complex by two water ways comprising twin intake pressure shafts, pressure tunnels, tailrace tunnels and an underground power and transformer cavern. Other underground excavations include 1.7 km of Main Access Tunnel (MAT), ventilation and cable shafts and five construction adits. With reference to a wide span Y-junction in the MAT this paper describes the methods used to characterize the rock mass for design, and more importantly the validation of the design through careful field observation comprising routine face mapping and continuous high-resolution laser scanning techniques. Issues such as adequate characterization of in situ stress to intact strength ratios and validation of scale-dependent discontinuity strength and stiffness are also discussed. Abstract

Terrestrial laser scans (TLS) are routinely used to document as-built surfaces for underground cavities. Although TLS are recorded from a single point and prone to "occlusions" by protruding edges, the surfaces developed from TLS point clouds record detail as fine as slickensides. Statistical analysis of discontinuities picked from TLS scans, including by virtual scanlines, allowed rapid characterization of excavated volumes at the Kidston PHES from vertical, lateral and forward projection of access tunnel and construction adit cuts. Photogrammetry can overcome the issue with occlusions in the data when used in conjunction with TLS. Near-equivalent geometric surfaces can be produced using a handheld camera at a variety of locations. We explored strategies for photogrammetry in the Kidston and Sydney Metro excavations. They uniformly illustrate the value embedded in photo-textured surfaces, particularly recognition and characterization of poorly exposed planes and improved understanding of lithology. However, lighting, camera positioning and reference controls are critical for developing a high-quality product. Overall, digital surfaces facilitate agile response to developing situations, add value to geotechnical deliverables and ultimately derisk projects. 26. Ground Penetrating Radar of Neotectonic Folds and Faults in South-Central Australia: Evolution of the Shallow Geophysical Structure of Fault-Propagation Folds with Increasing Strain

Abstract

Using ground penetrating radar (GPR) we investigate the near surface (~0–10 m depth) geophysical structure of neotectonic fault-propagation folds and thrust faults in south-central Australia in varying stages of fold and fault growth. Variations in neotectonic fold scarp heights are interpreted to reflect variations in accumulated slip on the underlying reverse faults. Fold scarps on the Nullarbor and Roe Plains are characterized by broad, asymmetric morphologies with vertical displacements of ~5 to ~40 m distributed over 1 to 2 km widths (~0.5 to ~4 m per 100 m). Within increasing scarp height there is an increase in the frequency and spatial density of strong reflector packages in the hanging wall that are attributed to material contrasts imposed by co-seismic fracturing and associated lithological and weathering variations. No evidence for discrete faulting is found at scarp heights up to 40 m (maximum relief of 4 m per 100 m). Where the principal slip zone of a fault ruptures to the surface, scarp morphologies are characterized by steep gradients (ca. 10 m per 100 m). Discrete faulting is imaged in GPR as structural lineaments, abrupt changes in the thickness of reflector packages with variations of amplitude, and/or hyperbolic diffraction packages indicative of the disturbance of reflector packages. Geophysical imaging of subtle changes in the shallow geological structure during growth of fault-propagation folds can be conducted using GPR informing the identification of locations for invasive investigations (e.g., trenching).

Abstract

Fire blight is a devastating bacterial disease of rosaceous plants. Its damage to apple production is a major concern, since no existing control option has proven to be completely effective. Some commercial apple varieties, such as 'Florina' and 'Nova Easygro', exhibit a consistent level of resistance to fire blight. In this study, we used an [F.sub.1] progeny of 'Florina' x 'Nova Easygro' to build parental genetic maps and identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) related to fire blight resistance. Linkage maps were constructed using a set of microsatellites and enriched with amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers. In parallel, progeny plants were artificially inoculated with Erwinia amylovora strain CFBP 1430 in a quarantine glasshouse. Shoot length measured 7 days after inoculation (DAI) and lesion length measured 7 and 14 DAI were used to calculate the lesion length as a percentage of the shoot length (PLL1 and PLL2, respectively). Percent lesion length data were [log.sub.10]-transformed ([log.sub.10] (PLL)) and used to perform the Kruskal--Wallis test, interval mapping (IM), and multiple QTL mapping (MQM). Two significant fire blight resistance QTLs were detected in 'Florina'. One QTL was mapped on linkage group 10 by IM and MQM; it explained 17.9% and 15.3% of the phenotypic variation by MQM with [log.sub.10](PLL1) and [log.sub.10](PLL2) data, respectively. A second QTL was identified on linkage group 5 by MQM with [log.sub.10](PLL2) data; it explained 10.1% of the phenotypic variation. Genotyping the plants of 'Florina' pedigree with the microsatellites flanking the QTLs showed that the QTLs on linkage groups 5 and 10 were inherited from 'Jonathan' and 'Starking' (a 'Red Delicious' sport mutation), respectively. Other putative QTLs (defined as QTLs with LOD scores above the chromosomal threshold and below the genome-wide threshold) were detected by IM on linkage groups 5 and 9 of 'Nova Easygro'. Les dommages qu'il cause en pomiculture sont d'autant plus graves qu'aucune methode de lutte existante n'est completement efficace. Quelques varietes commerciales, comme 'Florina' et 'Nova Easygro', affichent un niveau stable de resistance au feu bacterien. Dans ce travail, les auteurs ont utilise; la progeniture [F.sub.1] issue d'un croisement 'Florina' x 'Nova Easygro' pour produire des cartes geenetiques parentales et identifier des locus de caractere quantitatif (QTL) contribuant a la resistance au feu bacterien. 46. Effects of Earthquakes on Flood Hazards: A Case Study From Christchurch, New Zealand

Abstract

Earthquakes can influence flood hazards by altering the flux, volumes, and distributions of surface and/or subsurface waters and causing physical changes to natural and engineered environments (e.g., elevation, topographic relief, permeability) that affect surface and subsurface hydrologic regimes. This paper analyzes how earthquakes increased flood hazards in Christchurch, New Zealand, using empirical observations and seismological data. Between 4 September 2010 and 4 December 2017, this region hosted one moment magnitude (Mw) 7.1 earthquake, 3 earthquakes with Mw ≥ 6, and 31 earthquakes with local magnitude (ML) ≥ 5. Flooding related to liquefaction-induced groundwater pore-water fluid pressure perturbations and groundwater expulsion occurred in at least six earthquakes. Flooding related to shaking-induced ground deformations (e.g., subsidence) occurred in at least four earthquakes. Flooding related to tectonic deformations of the land surface (fault surface rupture and/or folding) occurred in at least two earthquakes. At least eight earthquakes caused damage to surface (e.g., buildings, bridges, roads) and subsurface (e.g., pipelines) infrastructure in areas of liquefaction and/or flooding. Severe liquefaction and associated groundwater-expulsion flooding in vulnerable sediments occurred at peak ground accelerations as low as 0.15 to 0.18 g (proportion of gravity). Expected return times of liquefaction-induced flooding in vulnerable sediments were estimated to be 100 to 500 years using the Christchurch seismic hazard curve, which is consistent with emerging evidence from paleo-liquefaction studies. Liquefaction-induced subsidence of 100 to 250 mm was estimated for 100-year peak ground acceleration return periods in parts of Christchurch.

47. Using Policy Labs as a process to bring evidence closer to public policymaking: a guide to one approach

Abstract

While robust evidence is one ingredient in the policymaking process, it is by no means the only one. Engaging with policymakers and the policymaking process requires collaborative working models, navigating through the experiences, values and perspectives of policymakers and other stakeholders, as well as communicating evidence in an accessible manner. As a response to these requirements, over recent years there has been proliferation of activities that engage producers of evidence (specifically, academics), policymakers, practitioners, and the public in policy formulation, implementation and evaluation. In this article, we describe one engagement approach for facilitating research evidence uptake into policy and practice—an activity called a ‘Policy Lab’—as conducted by the team at The Policy Institute at King’s College London on numerous policy challenges over the past four years. Drawing on our experience in running 15 Policy Labs between January 2015 and September 2019, we (a) provide a guide to how we have run Policy Labs, while sharing our learning on what has worked best in conducting them and (b) demonstrate how these labs can contribute to bringing evidence closer to policymaking, by comparing their characteristics to enablers for doing so identified in the literature. While this approach to Policy Labs is not the only one of its kind, we suggest that these types of Labs manifest characteristics identified in previous studies for influencing the policymaking process; namely: providing a forum for open, honest conversations around a policy topic; creating new networks, collaborations and partnerships between academics and policymakers; synthesising available evidence on a policy topic in a robust and accessible format; and providing timely access to evidence relevant to a policy issue.
