Today, society is driven by capitalist discourse, which profoundly affects our way of life. In this article we discuss how, from an analytic viewpoint, we can respond to this. According to Lacan, the psychoanalyst will offer a way out of the capitalist discourse by taking the position of lathouse from the analytical discourse. This means that the analyst should incarnate the object a, and personify the lost cause or object: "he acts as trash." However, there seems to be some caution required, for which Lacan referred to the position of the Saint and Balthasar Gracian. We will discuss the tricks put to the fore by Gracian: silence, absence and appearance, which will all revolve around the question of desire. Next, we turn to the position of the Saint in Seminar XXIII, introducing three new tricks from Joyce: silence, exile and cunning. We end by discussing the concept of the ‘scabeaustration’. There can only be ‘a saint’ when one no longer wants to be ‘a saint, castrating the ‘desire-to-know,’ the ‘desire-to-interpret,’ and the ‘desire-to-die.’ The saint will have localized his symptom, recognized it, beyond the therapeutic changes, as a specific modality of jouissance.

Er klinkt de laatste jaren meer en meer een oproep om naast kwantitatief onderzoek eveneens aan kwalitatief onderzoek te doen. Wanneer er sprake is van verandering binnen een therapie, lijkt het interessant te vatten wat deze transformatie is geweest en wat daar precies voor heeft gezorgd. Dit laatste is een vraag die ook analytici bezighoudt en waarvoor Lacan zelfs een specifieke onderzoeksmethode heeft ontwikkeld: de procedure van de passe. We zijn van mening dat de getuigenissen van de passe een interessante aanvulling kunnen vormen om de lacaniaanse kuur te bestuderen. Het is de bedoeling om in dit artikel deze procedure eens onder de loep te nemen. Waarover hebben we het precies als we het over ‘de passe’ hebben en wat zijn de historische en theoretische omkaderingen. We voorzien een korte illustratie en enkele kritische kanttekeningen bij deze procedure.

In clinical practice, when confronted with a suspected psychosis, it is critical that, beyond simply providing a label, the diagnosis is verified and further specified with regard to the particular psychotic structure: paranoia, schizophrenia, mania, melancholia or autism. Each psychotic structure requires a specific kind of treatment. When this is clarified, it will allow us to take up an appropriate position in the transference and it to orient ourselves in relation to treatment. One approach is to determine the status of the object a and the jouissance within the logic of the case. For example, the paranoiac situates the jouissance in the Other, the schizophrenic will struggle with the jouissance in the body and the autistic subject will have troubles with language and the Other. In the case of melancholia we see that the subject fully identifies with the object a and finally, in mania, the object a will no longer function. Clinical examples of each of these structures are provided.

This article examines the effects of the general shared idea that we have to talk about traumatic events to treat their effects, such as automutilation. Two case studies illustrate that starting a treatment with the presupposition that patients have to talk about traumatic events isn’t always the best way to start a treatment. This leads us to the duality of language introduced by Jacques Lacan. We have the dimensions of ‹le langage ›, the reassuring, denotative part of language and the dimension of ‹lalangue ›, embracing all the equivoques in a language, with its ‹real›, sharp edges. This conception of language has several immediate implications for treatment and paves the way for a more nuanced approach to working with trauma patients.

Met als doel de discussie omtrent het vrouwelijke oedipuscomplex te verdiepen, onderzoeken we in dit artikel de Demeter/Persephone-mythe. Andere auteurs pleitten eerder voor het meer centraal stellen van de moeder-dochterverhouding in de vrouwelijke triangulaire situatie. Zij schoven de Demeter/Persephone-mythe naar voor als een geschikt paradigma om het vrouwelijke oedipuscomplex te belichten. Tot nog toe behandelden zij de mythe in hun werk op een eerder oppervlakkige wijze. Met ons onderzoek willen wij daarin verandering brengen en de Demeter/Persephone-mythe als paradigma grondiger uitwerken. Een gedetailleerde bespreking van het verloop van de mythe aan de hand van geselecteerde fragmenten uit de Homerische hymne aan Demeter staat ons immers toe om verdere nuances aan te brengen in het begrip van het vrouwelijk oedipuscomplex. Daarbij focussen we eerst op het perspectief van Persephone, het meisje en het verlies van de onschuld; vervolgens op het perspectief van Demeter, de moeder en het verlies aan moeder-zijn; en ten slotte op ritmiek, noodzaak en onmogelijkheid in de cyclische hereniging van Demeter en Persephone aan het eind van de mythe.
