Abstract

The design of a high energy performance building requires an assessment of the various design options. Energy simulation offers interesting possibilities for clarifying the architect’s decisions at this level, especially in the initial design phases where the greatest opportunities for optimization lie. The aim of this work is to develop an approach for the evaluation and optimal use of energy simulation in the building design phases. To do this, EnergyPlus building simulation software was used to simulate the energy consumption of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering building at “Gheorghe Asachi” Technical University in Iasi, in order to identify the factors influencing energy consumption in buildings. The results of this study show that an increase in the cooling setpoint temperature from 22 °C to 28 °C in the roof construction can reduce operating temperatures by 14.2% and 20.0%, respectively. This optimization could significantly reduce the hours of thermal discomfort, in a ratio of 6.0 and 3.25, respectively. Consequently, optimizing parameters linked to design and the heating and cooling systems within the building makes it possible to achieve energy savings and ensure thermal comfort in buildings.

Abstract

Around the world, with a significant increase in installed capacity each year, wind power is one of the most profitable forms of renewable energy. In this study, three commercial wind turbines, namely Bonus 300kW/33, Bonus 1MW/54 and Vestas 2MW/80, were selected as large-scale wind power conversion systems (WECS) for the technical evaluation of production electricity for the N'Djamena site in Chad. The economic evaluations of these three WECS for power generation are calculated using the Cost Calculation Technique (PVC). Thus, the results obtained show that the highest capacity factor is 15.29% with Bonus 1MW/54 while the lowest at 11.39% with Bonus 300kW/33. The minimum average cost per kWh is 23 US$ / kWh with the 1 MW/54 Bonus, while the highest cost is 33.8 US$ / kWh with a Bonus of 300 kW / 33.

Abstract

The use of electric buses is increasing all over the world; this is due to the aim of limiting pollution in heavily urbanized areas. Using electric buses is one element of the desire to drop local pollution to zero emissions. The necessary electricity can be generated through centralized production, and in the case of electric buses, the pollution level is directly proportional to the amount of electricity produced. Their limited onboard power needs optimization, both in terms of traction and in auxiliary energy consumption. Heating in electric buses consumes the most energy from the auxiliaries, which can reduce the range of the vehicle up to a half, or more in the coldest days of the winter months. In this context, a precise estimation of heat loss and of the energy necessary for heating electric buses is crucial. Using the heat transfer theory, the heat balance method, and the U-value estimation, this article estimates the heat loss for a typical 12 m electric bus for a harsh winter day. Thermal simulations were made in order to estimate the heat flux through the structure of the bus (windows, walls, roof, and floor). Heat loss components were calculated in order to determine the most affected zones of the bus. The calculated data for the energy necessary to heat the bus were compared with the heating system data from an electric bus. By optimizing the necessary auxiliary energy consumption, the emissions at the source of electricity production will be significantly reduced.

Abstract

Technological advance has assured humanity's desire to increase its quality of life, anyway humanity is currently confronted with several global challenges, their complexity bases on their interconnectedness, and on fast changes in technological field. Present space activities are directed to explore the potential of diverse celestial bodies to have hosted life. In this context the Moon Village Association, MVA has as its main objective creating a global informal forum for governments, industry, academia for debating the Moon Village concept. MVA fosters cooperation for existing or planned global moon exploration programs by establishing the Global Expert Group on Sustainable Lunar Activities, GEGSLA. On a global level the United Nations Office for Outer Space Activities, UNOOSA, through its Committee, Policy, and Legal Affairs Section, CPLA provides main support to the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, UN-COPUOS. By the delegation of Romania, COPUOS has recently prepared a Proposal on a Consultative Mechanism on Lunar Activities, stating that lunar missions will for sure be carried out soon through efforts of space agencies and commercial stakeholders. In this context COPUOS is emphasizing the need to preserve the peaceful use of outer space by starting a new era of sustainable space exploration. This vision is urging global cooperation for shaping sustainable lunar activities, an Action Team on Lunar Activities Consultation, ATLAC, being proposed by the first author of this contribution. Therefore, some technical and operational issues are debated, which could be faced by lunar operators, being brought into debates by ATLAC with the goal of ensuring sustainable lunar activities. Abstract

The efficiency of the production of electricity from solar energy depends on technological developments and the performance of the photovoltaic panels. A positive trend depends on diversifying the materials used to manufacture plates and adapting them to the climatic conditions. The article presents several technological aspects to give an idea about the evolution of the yields of photovoltaic panels, especially about the photovoltaic technology in the first, the second, and third generations. After the statement of the main characteristics of the photovoltaic panels, an analysis of the factors that can affect their performances and can create difficulties in implementing projects is made. This approach aims to choose the most advantageous combination of concepts and techniques when making photovoltaic parks.

17. NEXT GEN TECH FOR MOVING TO SPACE

Abstract

Current space activities are especially directed to explore the potential of Mars to have hosted life as well as directed to find future exploration odds of Mars by human beings. In this context scientific advance and newest technology infrastructure, NEXT GEN TECH, is nowadays used and applied on Mars. Current NASA mission can be mentioned, which represents a newly planned exploration of Mars having the goal to succeed in providing scientific information with the support of several rovers. Sent rovers to Mars must support exploring the Red Planet with the goal of succeeding in its possible Terraforming. Several NASA's Mars Rovers, as Perseverance, Curiosity, Ingenuity will try to deeply explore surface and structure of the Red Planet. On the other side, planned Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment, MOXIE has as a final goal trying to create Oxygen on the Red Planet from its available atmosphere. Onboard NASA's Mars rover Curiosity is a Navigation Camera for taking images from Mars, and Ingenuity Mars Helicopter has as a mission to successfully complete several flights on Mars. All collected information will for sure support the intended process of Terraforming other planets, and shaping till 2050 first city of space, named Nuewa by establishing Asgardia, first Space Nation. Chances and challenges are pointed out, debating by this intended Next Gen Tech for trying to succeed in Terraforming other planets and creating first Space Nation.

Abstract

Heating the electric vehicles requires new challenges compared to thermal engine vehicles. Limited energy available from the traction battery needs new approaches for the heating systems and the thermal management, especially for the urban electric buses, which are operating in various and difficult conditions. The article presents the heating systems in use or tested on electric vehicles, with a proposal for an infrared heating system to be used on electric buses. An estimation of the heat flux necessary on the bus is also presented.

Abstract

Background: The B-MaP-C study aimed to determine alterations to breast cancer (BC) management during the peak transmission period of the UK COVID-19 pandemic and the potential impact of these treatment decisions. Methods: This was a national cohort study of patients with early BC undergoing multidisciplinary team (MDT)-guided treatment recommendations during the pandemic, designated ‘standard’ or ‘COVID-altered’, in the preoperative, operative and post-operative setting. Findings: Of 3776 patients (from 64 UK units) in the study, 2246 (59%) had ‘COVID-altered’ management. ‘Bridging’ endocrine therapy was used (n = 951) where theatre capacity was reduced. There was increasing access to COVID-19 low-risk theatres during the study period (59%). In line with national guidance, immediate breast reconstruction was avoided (n = 299). Where adjuvant chemotherapy was omitted (n = 81), the median benefit was only 3% (IQR 2–9%) using ‘NHS Predict’. There was the rapid adoption of new evidence-based hypofractionated radiotherapy (n = 781, from 46 units). Only 14 patients (1%) tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 during their treatment journey. Conclusions: The majority of ‘COVID-altered’ management decisions were largely in line with pre-COVID evidence-based guidelines, implying that breast cancer survival outcomes are unlikely to be negatively impacted by the pandemic. Abstract

Background: Immediate breast reconstruction (IBR) is routinely offered to improve quality-of-life for women requiring mastectomy, but there are concerns that more complex surgery may delay adjuvant oncological treatments and compromise long-term outcomes. High-quality evidence is lacking. The iBRA-2 study aimed to investigate the impact of IBR on time to adjuvant therapy.Methods: Consecutive women undergoing mastectomy ± IBR for breast cancer July–December, 2016 were included. Patient demographics, operative, oncological and complication data were collected. Time from last definitive cancer surgery to first adjuvant treatment for patients undergoing mastectomy ± IBR were compared and risk factors associated with delays explored.Results: A total of 2540 patients were recruited from 76 centres; 1008 (39.7%) underwent IBR (implant-only [n = 675, 26.6%]; pedicled flaps [n = 105,4.1%] and free-flaps [n = 228, 8.9%]). Complications requiring re-admission or re-operation were significantly more common in patients undergoing IBR than those receiving mastectomy. Adjuvant chemotherapy or radiotherapy was required by 1235 (48.6%) patients. No clinically significant differences were seen in time to adjuvant therapy between patient groups but major complications irrespective of surgery received were significantly associated with treatment delays.Conclusions: IBR does not result in clinically significant delays to adjuvant therapy, but post-operative complications are associated with treatment delays. Strategies to minimise complications, including careful patient selection, are required to improve outcomes for patients.

Abstract

The use of electric buses is increasing all over the world; this is due to the aim of limiting pollution in heavily urbanized areas. Using electric buses is one element of the desire to drop local pollution to zero emissions. The necessary electricity can be generated through centralized production, and in the case of electric buses, the pollution level is directly proportional to the amount of electricity produced. Their limited onboard power needs optimization, both in terms of traction and in auxiliary energy consumption. Heating in electric buses consumes the most energy from the auxiliaries, which can reduce the range of the vehicle up to a half, or more in the coldest days of the winter months. In this context, a precise estimation of heat loss and of the energy necessary for heating electric buses is crucial. Using the heat transfer theory, the heat balance method, and the U-value estimation, this article estimates the heat loss for a typical 12 m electric bus for a harsh winter day. Thermal simulations were made in order to estimate the heat flux through the structure of the bus (windows, walls, roof, and floor). Heat loss components were calculated in order to determine the most affected zones of the bus. The calculated data for the energy necessary to heat the bus were compared with the heating system data from an electric bus. By optimizing the necessary auxiliary energy consumption, the emissions at the source of electricity production will be significantly reduced. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
