The process of spore formation in the Gram-positive bacterium Bacillus subtilis is a simple developmental system controlled by 50 or more genes. The complex pattern of regulatory interactions between these genes is beginning to be elucidated. spoVJ is a poorly characterized locus in which mutations affect spore development at a relatively late stage (Stage V). We have now cloned and physically characterized the SpoVJ locus, and analysed its expression by lacZ fusion. Expression of spoVJ is temporally delayed until about two hours after the initiation of sporulation. Its expression is also spatially restricted to the mother cell compartment; as such, it represents the earliest known mother-cell-specific event. Control of spoVJ transcription is complex: expression is dependent upon the products of all of the spo0 genes and on some of the spoll genes but it is independent of all later genes except spolllD. As spolllD mutations do not affect prespore development, this gene must be an important early determinant of mother-cell-specific gene expression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

When attempting to assess the relative sustainability of a process or practice, it is important to be able to use measures which are appropriate. Sustainability can be viewed at different levels. At one level for any given process, the closing of cycles in terms of resource use and outputs (products and waste) may be an aspiration, and make that process in itself sustainable. However, the process may be intrinsically unsustainable when considered within a broader context accounting for all of the economic, ecological and socio-political implications. Traditionally sustainable indicators have been used as a measure to assess increasing or decreasing sustainability, following detailed analyses to define what the appropriate indicators should be. A current UK project investigating the options for the most sustainable means of disposal of domestic sanitary wastes requires measures to assist in the evaluation of the options. This paper reviews the use of indicators in the context of the current project and municipal water systems, and illustrates how an integrated approach may be envisaged incorporating economics, life cycle analysis and risk assessment as part of a framework to assist decision makers when deciding whether changes to systems or practices are likely to be more or less sustainable. A major conclusion is that any moves to introduce sustainable systems can only be made in conjunction with the system users - the public, who must be involved in the formulation of any new practices whichrequire a change in lifestyle. Objective: To report a validation of the Riester Big Ben Square Desk Aneroid Sphygmomanometer according to the international protocol developed by the Working Group on Blood Pressure Monitoring of the European Society of Hypertension 2002 (ESH-IP 2002) in the interest of transparency. This legacy publication is intended to assure users that the device satisfied the requirements in place at that time., Methods: Performance of the device was assessed by participants' age, sex, arm circumference and entry SBP/DBP. Validation was performed in 33 participants. The sphygmomanometer was assessed according to the ESH-IP, which defines zones of accuracy compared to the mercury standard as ≤5, ≤10, ≤15 mmHg or more., Results: The mean (± SD) age was 50.5 ± 13.0 years, range 29-71 years, entry SBP 142.6 ± 23.7 mmHg, entry DBP 89.0 ± 17.8 mmHg. The device passed all the requirements listed and the validation protocol. The Riester Big Ben Square Desk aneroid sphygmomanometer slightly underestimated the observer-measured SBP, yet slightly overestimated DBP. The observer-device disagreement was -0.8 ± 6.4 mmHg SBP and +0.6 ± 4.0 mmHg DBP., Conclusion: These data show that the Riester Big Ben Square Desk aneroid sphygmomanometer fulfilled the ESH-IP 2002 requirements for the validation of BP monitors. We have investigated how four different pour point depressant (PPD) polymers affect the pour point transition in mixtures of a single pure wax in a solvent. We used either n-eicosane (C20), CH3(CH2)18CH3, n-tetracosane (C24), CH3(CH2)22CH3 or n-hexatriacontane (C36), CH3(CH2)34CH3 as the wax component with either n-heptane or toluene as the solvent component. For all wax-solvent combinations, the measured variation of wax solubility with temperature is well predicted by ideal solution theory. The variation of pour point temperature as a function of the overall wax concentration is quantitatively modelled using the idea that, for each overall wax concentration, the pour point occurs at a temperature at which a critical volume fraction ϕ* of wax crystals has precipitated. Close to the pour point temperature, extraction and examination of the wax crystals show they consist of polydisperse, irregularly-shaped platelets with axial ratios (h/d, where h is the plate thickness and d is the plate long dimension) in the range 0.005-0.05. It is found that the measured ϕ* values corresponding to the pour point transitions are weakly correlated with the wax crystal axial ratios (h/d) for all wax-solvent-PPD polymer combinations. These results indicate that the pour point transition occurs at a volume fraction larger than the value at which the volumes of rotation of the platelet crystals overlap, i.e., 2.5(h/d) < ϕ* < 11(h/d). PPD polymers work, in part, by increasing the wax crystal axial ratio (h/d), thereby increasing ϕ* and reducing the pour point temperature. Since the PPD's ability to modify the wax crystal shape relies on its adsorption to the crystal-solution surface, it is anticipated and observed experimentally that optimum PPD efficacy is correlated with the difference between the wax and the polymer solubility boundary temperatures. This finding and the mechanistic insight gained here provide the basis for a simple and rapid screening test to identify candidate species likely to be effective PPDs for particular wax systems.

The AmBulatory Closure Device Percutaneous Intervention (ABCD-PCI) study is a multicenter randomized prospective controlled trial evaluating the safety of and patient satisfaction with same-day discharge following ambulatory percutaneous intervention with a closure device. This article reviews the findings from a single center, Baylor Jack and Jane Hamilton Heart and Vascular Hospital, from October 2008 through April 2010, with 23 patients in the same-day discharge group and 21 patients in the next-day discharge group. There were no differences between the groups in demographic or procedure characteristics. Outcomes were measured by a questionnaire and 7-day and 30-day follow-up phone calls. Results showed that same-day discharge after percutaneous intervention with a closure device is as safe as next-day discharge. However, there was a trend for a higher comfort level among patients in the next-day discharge group.

Oil-importing developing countries will need more energy during the 1980's to sustain development and to support their subsistence sectors. Development plans must be revised to reflect the potentially disastrous effects of high-cost oil on foreign exchange reserves and on national indebtedness. Energy use efficiency must be increased, and wider use must be made of domestic sources of energy-of conventional fossil and hydro sources and of new and renewable options such as biomass and other solar resources. The international community can help by careful management of world financial flows and trade agreements, expansion of capital assistance, and provision of technical assistance. The importance of improving levels of scientific and technical expertise in the less-developed countries is a challege to the worldwide scientific and engineering community.
