Paulsens is a mesothermal orogenic gold deposit located in the Wyloo Inlier on the southern margin of the Pilbara craton of Western Australia. Gold occurs in quartz-sulfide veins hosted within a folded and faulted gabbro dike, from which baddeleyite yields a U-Pb crystallization age of 2701 ±11 Ma. Monazite and xenotime in the veins and from hydrothermally altered country rocks yield three distinct U-Pb dates of ca. 2400, 1730, and 1680 Ma. Textural relationships between euhedral xenotime and pyrite with rounded native gold inclusions from within the quartz-sulfide veins show that the primary gold mineralization was synchronous with xenotime crystallization at 2403 ± 5 Ma, and coeval with pervasive alteration of the host rocks, which yield monazite ages of 2398 ± 37 and 2403 ± 38 Ma. Regional-scale hydrothermal events at ca. 1730 and 1680 Ma are linked to the growth of monazite within phyllitic rocks at 1730 ± 28 and 1721 ± 32 Ma, carbonate veining at 1655 ± 37 Ma, and gold remobilization or introduction of new gold at 1680 ± 9 Ma. The ca. 2400 Ma age for mineralization and hydrothermal alteration does not correspond with any known deformation event in the region, indicating a significantly different and more complicated low-temperature tectonothermal evolution for the southern Pilbara region than previously recognized. The in situ secondary ion mass spectrometry dating of monazite and xenotime employed here will lead to better targeting of orogenic gold deposits in the northern Capricorn Orogen, and these techniques can be utilized for orogenic gold exploration worldwide. This article is about Leonard Percival Howell, the man who is widely regarded as the founder of the Rastafari movement, which started in Jamaica in 1932. The article focuses on the attempts to suppress Howell during the foundational phase of the Rastafari movement from 1932 to 1954. This was the period in which Howell began preaching the divinity of Haile Selassie I, who was crowned the emperor of Ethiopia in 1930. In 1937, Howell established the friendly organization known as the Ethiopian Salvation Society, and in 1940 started the first Rastafari community in the hills of the parish of St. Catherine, Jamaica. These and his other religio-political activities made Howell the target of one of the longest and most aggressive campaigns to suppress an anticolonial activist during the late colonial period in Jamaica. However, one of the main points of this article is that the attempts to suppress Howell, who was seen by the colonial government as seditious, implicated not just the colonial regime, but also a number of other opponents within the society. This article is an attempt to show that Howell's suppression was not exclusively a colonial endeavor, but a society-wide campaign to undermine his leadership in order to disband the Rastafari movement. Howell advocated an anticolonialism that was seen as too revolutionary by every participant in the campaign to suppress him and his movement, and particularly aggravating was the notion that a black monarch was the fulfillment of biblical prophecy, and whose ascension signaled the start of black nationalism as a global liberation movement to end white rule over Africans and people of African descent. Abstract Background Very low birthweight infants are at risk for deficits in cognitive and language development, as well as attention and behaviour problems. Maternal sensitive behaviour (i.e. awareness of infant cues and appropriate responsiveness to those cues) in interaction with her very low birthweight infant is associated with better outcomes in these domains; however, maternal anxiety interferes with the mother's ability to interact sensitively with her very low birthweight infant. There is a need for brief, cost-effective and timely interventions that address both maternal psychological distress and interactive behaviour. The Cues and Care trial is a randomized controlled trial of an intervention designed to reduce maternal anxiety and promote sensitive interaction in mothers of very low birthweight infants. Methods and design Mothers of singleton infants born at weights below 1500 g are recruited in the neonatal intensive care units of 2 tertiary care hospitals, and are randomly assigned to the experimental (Cues) intervention or to an attention control (Care) condition. The Cues intervention teaches mothers to attend to their own physiological, cognitive, and emotional cues that signal anxiety and worry, and to use cognitive-behavioural strategies to reduce distress. Mothers are also taught to understand infant cues and to respond sensitively to those cues. Mothers in the Care group receive general information about infant care. Both groups have 6 contacts with a trained intervener; 5 of the 6 sessions take place during the infant's hospitalization, and the sixth contact occurs after discharge, in the participant mother's home. The primary outcome is maternal symptoms of anxiety, assessed via self-report questionnaire immediately post-intervention. Secondary outcomes include maternal sensitive behaviour, maternal symptoms of posttraumatic stress, and infant development at 6 months corrected age. Discussion The Cues and Care trial will provide important information on the efficacy of a brief, skills-based intervention to reduce anxiety and increase sensitivity in mothers of very low birthweight infants. A brief intervention of this nature may be more readily implemented as part of standard neonatal intensive care than broad-based, multi-component interventions. By intervening early, we aim to optimize developmental outcomes in these high risk infants.
