Atherosclerosis is a cardiovascular disease featuring a chronic inflammation due to the accumulation of lipids within the tunica intima of arteries. The development of the disease depends on dynamic changes in the vascular biology. Immune system cells directly influence the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis during the inflammatory process. Currently, atherosclerosis diagnosis is performed by non-invasive or invasive methods depending on the type of arteries that are being investigated. New diagnostic and therapeutic procedures should improve the quality of life of patients. Some of the genes that could be biomarkers of cardiovascular diseases are TP53 and eNOS. The protein p53 is recognized as a tumor suppressor protein that controls DNA repair, cell cycle progression or arrest and apoptosis. These functions that p53 exerts are well known and some other functions are being investigated, such as its role in the cardiovascular system. The eNOS gene regulates the levels of nitric oxide, which is vital for several intracellular biological functions, such as vasodilation, vascular homeostasis, protection of arteries against injuries, cellular growth, signaling pathways and immune response among others. Here, we used an in-silico approach to predict four models of interaction between clinically important proteins (eNOS and p53), to predict the interface of interaction and to rationally design modulating peptides to be tested in vitro and in vivo and possibly used as a therapeutic agent.

Understanding natural community assembly along elevational gradients has long attracted the attention of ecologists and botanists. Here, we study a tropical local-scale elevational gradient at a dissected mountainous terrain to understand if drivers of tree community variation and assembly patterns are similar to those reported for greater spatial distances and elevational gradients in the Atlantic Forest region. We inventoried trees with Diameter at Breast Height (DBH) ≥5.0 cm in 154 plots (10 × 10 m; 1.54 ha) systematically distributed along a local-scale (

Tropical forests are one of the most important ecosystems and loss of biological diversity in these is a major concern. We studied seven forest remnants on the coast of Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil, three medium-sized (24-63 ha) and four small (5-11 ha), to assess the influence of size, degree of disturbance and isolation on composition and diversity of the tree layer. A total of 443 species in 60 families and 185 genera were recorded, with Myrtaceae, Lauraceae and Fabaceae being the most species-rich families. The results showed areas of high α-diversity (α= 34.86-75.69) and a slightly greater decline of similarity with distance between the study areas. Remnant size not explained the variation in the species composition and we found correlation between the level of disturbance and the floristic composition. The remnants had low floristic similarity, strongly influenced by the degree of disturbance. Results suggest that disturbance influences composition and diversity and confirm the importance of including both medium-sized and small remnants in the conservation of tropical forest diversity. Resumo As florestas tropicais constituem um dos mais importantes ecossistemas mundiais e a perda da diversidade biológica é uma das grandes preocupações. Para avaliar a influência do tamanho, grau de perturbação e isolamento dos remanescentes florestais na composição e diversidade do estrato arbóreo, nós estudamos sete remanescentes florestais situados na costa do Rio de Janeiro, sudeste do Brasil, três de tamanho médio (24-63 ha) e quatro pequenos (5-11 ha). Um total de 443 espécies em 60 famílias e 185 gêneros foi registrado, sendo Myrtaceae, Lauraceae e Fabaceae as famílias mais ricas em espécies. Os resultados mostraram áreas de alta diversidade α (α= 34.86-75.69) e um declínio ligeiramente maior de similaridade com a distância entre as áreas estudadas. O tamanho do remanescente não explicou a variação na composição de espécies e nós encontramos correlação entre o nível de perturbação e a composição florística. Os remanescentes apresentaram baixa similaridade florística, fortemente influenciada pelo grau de perturbação. A relação entre riqueza de espécies e tamanho da área e isolamento não foi significativa. Os resultados sugerem que a perturbação influencia, de forma considerável, a composição e diversidade e confirma a importância da inclusão de remanescentes de tamanho médio e pequeno para a conservação da diversidade de florestas tropicais.

The Atlantic Forest suffered five centuries of continuous deforestation related to successive economic cycles, and is now reduced to 11.7 % of its original cover. The Atlantic Forest Restoration Pact was launched in 2009 and aims to restore 15 million hectares until 2050. Natural regeneration can play an important role in meeting this target, however little attention has been paid to this process and there is a gap in the knowledge about its driving factors at the landscape scale. We mapped forest cover of an Atlantic Forest municipality in Southeastern Brazil, in five timeslots between years 1978 and 2014, and used the weights of evidence method for modeling its spatial dynamics, in order to understand where natural regeneration is occurring and which are the main factors related to this phenomenon. In 36 years, forest cover increased 3,020 hectares (15.3 %), related to the decreasing of both rural population (R2 = 0.9794, p = 0.0013) and cropland cover (R2 = 0.8679, p = 0.0212). Landscape metrics shows the increment of number of fragments and structural connectivity among them. The main spatial variables influencing forest cover dynamics were topographic position, slope, solar radiation, soil type and distance to forest, urban areas and roads. Secondary forests provide ecosystem services that can turn into economic benefits, and natural regeneration can reduce restoration costs to the municipality. The cost of active restoration of the same area would have meant a total expense of U$ 15.1 million (U$ 419 k/year). We show here that spontaneous regeneration must be accounted for and incorporated into the spatial planning of Atlantic Forest restoration.

Background: Understanding how factors related to environment and geographical distance explain community variation allows insights about how ecological niche and neutral processes control tropical community assembly. Aims: Quantify how variation in regional tree community richness and composition in a humid tropical forest across a mountain chain are related to niche and putative neutral processes. Methods: We used a variation partitioning routine based on Redundancy Analysis to model tropical tree community richness and composition within three distinct elevation belts, as a function of environment and spatial structure, using data from 32 studies in the Serra do Mar Range, south-eastern Brazil. Results: Environmental effects were greater than spatial structure effects to explain community variation in the three elevation belts. There was a trend of decreasing spatial structure effects while environmental effects remained constant from lower to higher elevations. Patterns were congruent for species richness and composition. Conclusions: We suggest that on tropical mountains, niche-related processes are equally relevant for tropical forest community assembly at all elevations, while neutral processes become weaker towards higher elevations. Determining if this trend is a consequence of the greater heterogeneity of environmental conditions associated with higher elevations in tropical mountainous terrain remains an important area of research.

Resumo Um material que se destaca para uso em várias aplicações é o dióxido de titânio (TiO2), devido principalmente às suas propriedades de estabilidade térmica e química e as suas excelentes propriedades ópticas. Porém, estas propriedades são dependentes do tipo de fase e da característica morfológica, o que está diretamente relacionado com o método de processamento do TiO2. Desta forma, este trabalho propôs sintetizar nanopartículas de TiO2 pelo método Pechini com diferentes fases e avaliar a influência dessas fases nas propriedades fotoluminescentes do TiO2. Para este fim, as proporções estequiométricas molares entre ácido cítrico:cátions metálicos de 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 4:1 e 5:1 foram investigadas. As nanopartículas foram caracterizadas por difração de raios X (DRX), espectroscopia de infravermelho, análise de textura, microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV), espectroscopia de excitação e emissão e determinação da banda proibida (band gap) por espectroscopia de refletância difusa. Foi confirmada a presença de duas fases, anatásio e rutilo, por DRX em diversas proporções para cada amostra; por MEV observou-se que os tamanhos de aglomerados aumentaram com a relação entre ácido cítrico:cátions metálicos. Com relação à fotoluminescência, observou-se que a intensidade máxima no espectro de emissão ocorreu no comprimento de onda de 533 nm para a amostra 3:1 e a intensidade máxima no espectro de excitação ocorreu na amostra 2:1 em comprimento de onda de 451 nm.

As restingas são ambientes geologicamente recentes e as espécies que as habitam são típicas de ecossistemas adjacentes como as Florestas Ombrófilas, as Matas de Tabuleiro e a Caatinga, sendo este, o aspecto mais importante na sua composição de espécies, que é composta por diversas formas biológicas, tais como árvores, arbustos, herbáceas eretas e reptantes. O estudo foi realizado no Município de Mata de São João na vila de Praia do Forte, localizada ao longo do Litoral Norte do Estado da Bahia. Com o objetivo de avaliar se há existência de diferentes comunidades vegetais em um trecho de restinga, foram locadas quatro transecções de 200m com cinco unidades amostrais de 100m2 cada. Ao final do estudo foram amostrados 1.640 indivíduos distribuídos em 68 espécies. Os dados florísticos e fitossociológicos associados à análise de Cluster apontam a existência de duas comunidades vegetais distintas, sendo elas uma Mata de Restinga (Transecções 3 e 4) e uma Restinga em Moitas (Transecções 1 e 2). Uma elevada diversidade de espécies foi detectada nas transecções 1 e 2 (H’ = 3,882) e 3 e 4 (H’ =3,835), além de uma diferença significativa na composição das espécies entre elas (p < 0,001). As famílias mais representativas em número de espécies foram: Myrtaceae, Rubiaceae e Malpighiaceae.

Distribution ranges of plant species are related to physical variables of ecosystems that limit plant growth. Therefore, each plant species response to physical factors builds up the functional diversity of an ecosystem. The higher the species richness of an ecosystem, the larger the probability of maintaining functions and the higher the potential number of plant functional groups (FGs). Thus, the richness potentially increases the number of functions of the highly diverse Atlantic Rainforest domain in Brazil. Severe plant growth limitations caused by stress, however, decrease species richness. In the Spodosols of the Mussununga, an associated ecosystem of Atlantic Rainforest, the percentage of fine sand is directly related to water retention. Moreover, the depth of the cementation layer in the Mussununga’s sandy soil is a physical factor that can affect the plants’ stress gradients. When a shallow cementation layer depth is combined with low water retention in soils and with low fine sand percentage, the double stresses of flooding in the rainy season and water scarcity in the dry season result. This study aimed to identify FGs among Mussununga plant species responding to water stress gradients of soil and to verify the effects of the gradients on plant species richness of the Mussununga. A canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) of species abundance and soil texture variables was performed on 18 plots in six physiognomies of the Mussununga. Species richness rarefactions were calculated for each vegetation form to compare diversity. The two main axes of the CCA showed two FGs responding to soil texture and cementation layer depth: stress tolerator species and mesic species. Physical variables affect plant diversity, with species richness rising as the fine sand proportion also rises in the Mussununga. The effect of the cementation layer is not significantly related to species richness variation.

RESUMO A Área de Proteção Ambiental (APA) de Massambaba, criada em 1986 e administrada pela FEEMA, abrange 76,3 km2 de restingas, lagoas e morros baixos. Está situada nos municípios de Saquarema, Araruama e Arraial do Cabo, em uma área de restinga constituída por um sistema de dois cordões arenosos, coberto em parte por um campo de dunas. A região de Cabo Frio possui um clima sui generis para o litoral sudeste, com menos de 900 mm anuais de pluviosidade. A diversidade florística desta região é a mais alta do litoral, constituindo um dos 14 Centros de Diversidade Vegetal no Brasil. São descritas 10 formações vegetais e 664 espécies de plantas vasculares distribuídas em 118 famílias. As famílias mais ricas em espécies são Leguminosae e Myrtaceae. Das formas de vida, as mais abundantes são as ervas (30%), seguido pelos arbustos (23%), árvores (21%), lianas (19%), epífitas (6%) e parasitas/saprófitas (1%). Esta unidade de conservação abriga diversas espécies ameaçadas de extinção.

An ethnobotanical study was carried out in the local fishing community of Arraial do Cabo Municipality, starting with an inventory of a restinga forest remnant adjacent to the community being studied. Using quantitative ethnobotany methodology allied with ecological parameters (frequency, density, dominance and their relative values, importance value index), we sampled 296 individuals and identified 41 species in 26 families and 36 genera. The highest use value (U.V.) was attributed to Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi. Based on these data we interviewed local fishermen regarding useful species. We used structured interviews and quantitative analysis based on informant consensus. The 22 different types of usage mentioned were placed in five categories: food, medicine, technology, construction and firewood. Selective extraction of wood for construction, firewood and boat repair were the most important use values, involving 46% of the species, 57% of the families and 80% of the individuals. RESUMO Um estudo etnobotânico foi feito na comunidade de pescadores artesanais do município de Arraial do Cabo, começando com o inventário de espécies, desenvolvido em um remanescente de floresta de restinga próximo à comunidade estudada. Usando uma metodologia quantitativa em Etnobotânica, aliada a parâmetros ecológicos (freqüência, densidade, dominância e seus valores relativos, e índice de valor de importância), os seguintes resultados foram obtidos: 296 indivíduos foram inventariados e 41 espécies identificadas, distribuídas em 26 famílias e 36 gêneros. O maior valor de uso (V.U.) foi atribuído a Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi. A partir destes dados, foram realizadas entrevistas estruturadas, e análises quantitativas, baseadas no consenso entre os informantes (pescadores locais) para buscar indicação sobre as espécies úteis. Os 22 diferentes tipos de uso mencionados foram distribuídos em cinco categorias: alimentar, medicinal, tecnologia, construção e combustível. Os valores de uso mais expressivos, envolvendo 46% das espécies, 57% das famílias e 80% dos indivíduos, foram relativos à extração seletiva de madeira para construção, lenha e reparo de barcos.

The Poço das Antas National Biological Reserve is located in Rio de Janeiro State, southeast Brazil. This paper presents information on past environmental characteristics of the area through pollen analysis. Two sedimentary columns were collected and five samples were selected for radiocarbon dating. The following ages of the columns from bottom to top were detected: column 1 - 1.20-1.16 m: 6080 ±40 years BP, 0.775-0.735 m: 4090 ±40 years BP, 0.385-0.345 m: 1880 ±80 years BP; column 2 - 1.22-1.18 m: 3520 ±40 years BP, 0.23-0.19 m: 1810 ±40 years BP. Three samples from column 1 and two samples from column 2 were selected for pollen analysis: 1.20 m, 0.77 m and 0.37 m of column1 and 1.22 m and 0.21 m of column 2. Chemical treatment followed standard methodology. The palynological analysis shows that around 6080 years BP the study area was dominated by a rain forest and from around 4090 years BP the vegetation changed to a fragmented forest, restricted to low hills and surrounded by an open area of grassland and pioneer plants, swamps and peat areas. The pollen assemblage of the samples 3520, 1880 and 1810 years BP suggest the permanence of this kind of vegetation between 4000 years BP and the actual.A Reserva Biológica de Poço das Antas localiza-se no Estado do Rio de Janeiro, na região sudeste do Brasil. O presente estudo teve por objetivo fornecer informações a respeito de características ambientais pretéritas da área por meio de análises palinológicas. Foram coletadas duas colunas de sedimentos e cinco amostras foram selecionadas para datação pelo método de radiocarbono, revelando as seguintes idades, da base ao topo dos testemunhos: coluna 1 - 1,20-1,16 m: 6080 ± 40 anos AP, 0,775-0,735 m: 4090 ± 40 anos AP e 0,38-0,34 m: 1880 ± 80 anos AP; coluna 2 - 1,22-1,18 m: 3520 ± 40 anos AP e 0,23-0,19 m, 1810 ± 40 anos AP. Foram retiradas três amostras da coluna 1 e duas da coluna 2 para análise palinológica: 1,20 m, 0,77 e 0,37 m da coluna 1 e 1,22 m e 0,21 m da coluna 2. O tratamento químico foi baseado em metodologia padrão de preparação de amostras palinológicas. A análise palinológica indica que em torno de 6080 anos AP a área de estudo era dominada pela Floresta Ombrófila e que, por volta de 4090 anos AP, a vegetação tinha mudado para uma floresta fragmentada, restrita às baixas colinas circundadas por áreas de campo aberto, pantanosas e turfosas. A permanência desse tipo de vegetação entre 4000 anos AP e o atual é sugerida pelas amostras datadas de 3520,1880 e 1810 anos AP.

Over the past few years, magnetic position sensors have increasingly been chosen over other products and technologies as a result of their high durability, reliability and their ability to be integrated into very small form factors. However, the use of magnetic based sensors is susceptible to interferences when placed in electric vehicles, due to the increasing number of cables. As the electric cables generate stray magnetic fields, especially the ones carrying the high currents from battery to the motor, wrong readings from the magnetic sensors occur, since the amount of external magnetic fields is greater than the maximum disturbance supported by the sensor [1]. The effect of magnetic shielding on an angular position sensor is studied here using an electro-magnetic FEM model (ANSYS Workbench [2]). Permanent magnet, magnetic sensor and disturbance source are modeled and the effect of shielding is extracted from the simulations. RESUMO A família Annonaceae está representada nas restingas do estado do Rio de Janeiro por nove espécies: Anaxagorea dolichocarpa Sprague & Sandwith, Annona acutiflora Mart., A. glabra L., A. montana Macfad., Duguetia sessilis (Vell.) Maas, Guatteria nigrescens Mart., Oxandra nitida R.E.Fr., Xylopia ochrantha Mart. e X. sericea A.St.-Hil. Apresentam-se chave de identificação das espécies, breves descrições, ilustrações e comentários sobre fenologia, distribuição geográfica, habitats e usos.

A variação da biomassa aérea de Allagoptera arenaria (Gomes) O. Kuntze (Arecaceae), ao longo de 5 perfis topográficos perpendiculares ao mar, foi analisada em uma comunidade arbustiva de Palmae, na restinga de Marambaia, RJ. Foi encontrada uma relação positiva e altamente significativa da biomassa aérea dessa espécie (F = 39,57; R² = 0,69; P < 0,01) e da cobertura de detritos (F = 525,92; R² = 0,92; P < 0,01) com o distanciamento do mar. O desenvolvimento de A. arenaria está intimamente relacionado com a variação topográfica da área de estudo. Densas populações de A. arenaria enriquecem o solo através do aumento de matéria orgânica sob sua cobertura proveniente de suas folhas senescentes e, conseqüentemente, potencializa o acúmulo de nutrientes caracterizando um microclima que pode colaborar no estabelecimento de outras espécies.

RESUMO O trabalho apresenta os resultados do levantamento fitossociológico do componente arbóreo (DAP ≥ 5 cm) de um trecho de Mata Atlântica de encosta, na Estação Ecológica Estadual do Paraíso, Cachoeiras de Macacu, RJ. 0 clima da área é do tipo A'Ar, com temperatura média de 23,0ºC e precipitação de 2.558,4 mm anuais. O solo predominante é da classe Cambissolo. O levantamento fitossociológico foi realizado pelo método de quadrantes. Nos 150 pontos, foram amostrados 592 indivíduos vivos, distribuídos por 42 famílias, 83 gêneros e 138 espécies, e 8 mortos ainda em pé. As 5 espécies mais importantes são: Neoraputia magnifica var. magnifica, Euterpe edulis, Gallesia integrifolia, Chrysophyllum flexuosum e Calycorectes sellowianus. Myrtaceae apresenta o maior número de indivíduos (18,6% do total) e de espécies, com 27 (19,6%) das 138 levantadas. As 5 famílias de maior VI são: Sapotaceae, Myrtaceae, Rutaceae, Meliaceae e Palmae. O índice de diversidade de Shannon (H') é de 4,20 e a equabilidade (J), de 0,85. A mata apresenta dois estratos arbóreos, praticamente contínuos (1,8-18 m; 20-30 m), além de árvores emergentes (até 45 m). As distribuições de diâmetro (altura do estipe para Euterpe edulis) das principais espécies amostradas indicam regeneração abundante e estrutura populacional estável. Sugere-se que a mata encontra-se, possivelmente, em clímax ou em estágio sucessional muito próximo.

It further evaluates which species are found at threatened species lists and the similarity that the studied forest component has with other nearby locations with similar vegetation. Data gathering relied on the joint effort of arbitrary walks and sampling units known as Transect. The same sampling criterion was applied at both approaches (DBH greater than or equal to 5 cm). A similarity analysis, followed by a Cluster analysis, was used to compare the studied vegetation component. Similarity calculations were based in the Bray-Curtis coefficient. We detected a total of 235 species. These are divided in 134 genera and 52 families. The richest families are Myrtaceae (38 spp.), Fabaceae (20 spp.) and Rubiaceae (20 spp.). The richest genera are Eugenia (16 spp.), Myrcia (8 spp.) and Ocotea (6 spp.). Nineteen of the detected species are currently listed as threatened and the studied forest component is mostly resembled to the vegetation at Rio Bonito (RJ). Our evidence shows that the evaluated tree and shrub layer seems to be well preserved and represents an important area for conservational efforts. The results additionally indicate that this vegetation seems to have a greater floristic resemblance to drier and further locations, rather than to more humid and close ones.

Também são avaliadas quais das espécies encontradas constam em listas de espécies ameaçadas e qual a semelhança deste componente da vegetação com locais próximos cobertos pelo mesmo tipo de vegetação. A coleta de dados se valeu do esforço conjunto de caminhadas arbitrárias e de unidades amostrais conhecidas como "Transect". O critério de inclusão na amostragem foi o mesmo para ambos os métodos (DAP igual ou maior a 5 cm). O componente estudado foi comparado a outras áreas através de uma análise de similaridade, seguida de um dendrograma. Os cálculos de similaridade foram baseados no coeficiente de Bray-Curtis. Detectamos, ao todo, 235 espécies, distribuídas em 134 gêneros e 52 famílias. As famílias mais ricas são Myrtaceae (38 spp.), Fabaceae (20 spp.) e Rubiaceae (20 spp.), enquanto os gêneros mais ricos são Eugenia (16 spp.), Myrcia (8 spp.) e Ocotea (6 spp.). Dezenove das espécies detectadas constam em listas de espécies ameaçadas de extinção e o componente estudado tem maior similaridade com a floresta em Rio Bonito (RJ). As evidências mostram que a vegetação estudada parece estar bem preservada e representa uma área importante para esforços conservacionistas. Os resultados indicam ainda que o remanescente florestal em questão aparenta ser mais semelhante a locais mais secos e distantes do que próximos e úmidos.

We examined the frequency of hermaphroditic, monoecious, and dioecious species of angiosperms in restinga (sandy coastal plain) vegetation in SE Brazil. The study site was a vegetation mosaic comprising nine plant formations, ranging from open types to forest. Dioecy (14% of 566 species) was similar to other tropical vegetations and strongly associated with woodiness and entomophily. However, more interestingly, there was an exceptionally high percentage (35%) of dioecious species among the dominant woody plants. This pattern has not been previously reported, and we discuss the extent to which it is ecologically driven. We argue that the high abundance of dioecious plants in this resource-poor environment can be attributed to ecological traits related to long-distance dispersal, ecological vigor, and possibly, vegetative reproduction.

Resumo As restingas sao planicies arenosas ao longo da costa litorânea que exibem uma rica e peculiar vegetacao. As Moraceae nativas do Brasil englobam principalmente plantas lenhosas de porte arboreo que participam do estagio mais avancado das matas de restinga. Atraves de bibliografia especializada, consultas a herbarios e coletas de campo, objetivou-se elucidar a taxonomia, identificar os habitats preferenciais, atualizar a area de ocorrencia e reconhecer o atual estado de conservacao das especies dessa familia. Nas restingas fluminenses ocorrem cinco generos e 20 especies de Moraceae. Na Formacao de Mata Seca acham-se presentes 16 especies, na Mata Inundavel oito e na Arbustiva Fechada seis. Dessas especies, 15 encontram-se ameacadas de extincao, principalmente: Ficus pulchella e Maclura brasiliensis. The native Brazilian Moraceae include primarily tall woody plants growing in the more developed stages of restinga forests, but they also include herbs and shrubs. Specialized bibliography, herbarium material and field collections, were used to elucidate the taxonomy, recognize the preferred habitats, update the area of occurrence and to recognize the current conservation status of its species. There are five genera and 20 species in Moraceae. In the Dry Forest formation occur 16 species, eight in Swamp Forest and six in Closed Shrub. These species, 15 are threatened of the extinction, mainly: Ficus pulchella and Maclura brasiliensis. Keywords: Urticales, taxonomy, Atlantic Forest, conservation.

Analisamos a estrutura de uma floresta mal drenada na Restinga da Marambaia, RJ, e a amplitude ecológica das espécies quanto à tolerância à inundação do solo. Foram amostrados em 50 parcelas contíguas de 10 X 10m (0,5 ha), indivíduos com diâmetro do caule a altura do peito (DAP) >2,5 cm. Registramos 1.223 indivíduos vivos (distribuídos em 24 famílias, 43 gêneros e 57 espécies). O índice de diversidade de Shannon (H') foi de 2,87 e a equabilidade (J') foi de 0,68. A densidade total foi de 2.446 ind. ha-1 e a área basal de 25,14 m². ha-1. As famílias mais ricas em espécies foram Myrtaceae (13), Leguminosae (5), Annonaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Myrsinaceae e Sapindaceae (4). Dez espécies apresentaram valor de importância (VI) acima de nove, correspondendo o somatório de seus valores a 75% do VI total. As espécies com maiores valores de VI foram Tapirira guianensis Aubl. (42,42), Amaioua intermedia Mart. ex Roem. & Schult. (40,77) e Chaetocarpus myrsinites Baill. (39,98), que juntas detiveram 41% do VI total. A comunidade arbórea analisada foi composta principalmente por espécies preferenciais de áreas secas, ou seja, espécies com preferência por alagamento periódico do solo ou solos mais secos, mas não com alagamento permanente ou quase permanente do solo. A maior similaridade da floresta mal drenada da Marambaia foi observada com as florestas inundáveis do Parque Nacional de Jurubatiba, RJ (21,4 e 23,8%). Nossos resultados permitiram concluir que não existe uma flora particular para as formações inundáveis nas restingas do sul e sudeste brasileiro e que mudanças do padrão florístico da vegetação dessas áreas ocorrem em função da proximidade da fonte de propágulos de espécies com alta tolerância à inundação do solo e secundariamente relacionada a questões fitogeográficas, ligadas à limitação da distribuição de espécies pelas condições climáticas das regiões subtropicais. We analyzed the structure of a seasonally flooded beach-ridge forest and species functional characteristics regarding soil flood tolerance at Restinga da Marambaia (Rio de Janeiro). We sampled 50 contiguous 10 x 10m plots (0.5 ha) and recorded woody individuals with trunk breast height diameter (dbh) >2.5 cm. We found 1223 live trees, belonging to 24 families, 43 genera and 57 species. Shannon's index was 2.87 and equitability (J') 0.68. Total estimated density and basal area were 2446 ind.ha-1 and 25.14 m².ha-1. The most species-rich families were Myrtaceae (13), Leguminosae (5), Annonaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Myrsinaceae and Sapindaceae (4). Ten species had importance values (IV) over nine and included 75% of total IV. Species with high IV were Tapirira guianensis Aubl. (42.42), Amaioua intermedia Mart. ex Roem. & Schult. (40.77) and Chaetocarpus myrsinites Baill. (39.98), which together hold 41% of total IV. Results indicated that the tree community studied was mainly composed of species that prefer drier or periodically flooded soils, but not permanently flooded soils. The seasonally flooded forest in Restinga da Marambaia shows greatest similarity with seasonally flooded forests at Jurubatiba National Park - RJ (21.4%; 23.8%). Since the flora of seasonally flooded forests in southern and southeastern Brazilian restingas apparently is not restricted to these formations, it is reasonable to conclude that floristic pattern changes in the vegetation of these areas may be the result of the proximity of species' propagule sources (i.e., those with high soil flood tolerance), plus the phytogeography of the species linked to distribution limits caused by climatic conditions.

We evaluated temporal variation and quality of food resources available to birds especially in two energy-demanding seasons: one when there is a peak of molting residents and another when non-breeding individuals are the bulk of biomass of captured birds. Birds were captured and observed, as well as fruits counted and collected, in two restinga sites for 2 years. Molting resident birds may rely basically on the regularly produced Clusia hilariana and Erythroxylum spp. fruits as lipid-sources, while non-breeders count on Ocotea notata fruits (also rich in lipids) during their passage by the study site. We found that fruits with sugars, lipids or proteins were available throughout the whole period, but a more intense seasonal variation was observed for the before mentioned plant species. The birds studied are known to be potential seed dispersers of these plant species, which are important components of restinga plant community structure.

Este trabalho representa uma síntese do conhecimento florístico de briófitas do Parque Nacional da Restinga de Jurubatiba, com resultados de campo, material de herbário e publicações. Foram registrados 61 táxons de briófitas, pertencentes a 15 famílias e 33 gêneros. Para cada táxon foram analisados a distribuição geográfica, o tipo de substrato e a forma de vida. A família predominante foi Lejeuneaceae (25 espécies), seguida de Jubulaceae (sete), Calymperaceae (quatro) e Sphagnaceae (quatro). Entre as espécies, predominaram as de distribuição Neotropical (35%). Com relação ao substrato preferencial, a maior parte dos táxons é corticícola. A forma de vida predominante foi o tapete, seguido pelo tufo e a trama. O Parque possui brioflora bastante representativa no que diz respeito à vegetação de restinga, com 45% dos táxons de briófitas conhecidas para as restingas no Brasil e 82% das conhecidas para as restingas do estado do Rio de Janeiro. É apresentada uma chave para identificação das espécies. We present a synthesis of the bryophyte flora in Restinga de Jurubatiba National Park, based on field work, herbaria material and bibliography. Sixty one taxa were recorded, in 15 families and 33 genera. For each taxa, we analyze geographic distribution, substrata and life form. The most species-rich family was Lejeuneaceae (25 species), followed by Jubulaceae (seven), Calymperaceae (four) and Sphagnaceae (four). Most taxa have a Neotropical (35%) distribution, and most taxa prefer the corticicolous substrate. Mat was the most common life form. The bryoflora of this National Park is an important reservoir of bryophyte diversity in the restingas, with 45% of the taxa known from the sandy coastal plains of Brazil and 82% known from the this habitat in Rio de Janeiro state. A key to identification of the species is given.
