22. Impact of Research-Based Professional Development: Investigation of Inservice Teacher Learning and Practice in Wiki Integration

Abstract

This study reports on a district-wide research-based professional development (PD) that included 207 teachers and administrators. Data were collected from pre/post surveys, content analysis of the participants' wiki pages, and a follow-up questionnaire. Findings indicate that participants significantly improved their foundational and technical wiki skills. The PD had a significant impact on participants' perceptions of preparedness to use wikis in the classroom. Findings provided evidence that research-based PD can foster sustained teacher practice. The study demonstrates that participation in PD that is sustained, student-centered, participatory, and supported by adequate resources can have a significant impact on teacher learning and practice about specific technologies. 23. Preparing Science Teachers to Teach with Technology: Exploring a K-16 Networked Learning Community Approach

Abstract

This exploratory study examines the impact of a professional development program where a K-16 networked learning community approach was implemented to provide training and support for technology integration in science education. The study presents findings from a three-year project with five cohort groups that included 17 student teachers, 17 cooperating teachers, 5 university-level faculty, and 3 student teaching supervisors. Data were collected from pre and post surveys, journal entries, participant observations, and electronic portfolios. Findings indicate that over the course of the program the project participants significantly increased their confidence and competence to integrate technology into the teaching and learning process. Technology-integrated lessons developed by the project participants included the use of a variety of advanced technology tools to facilitate learning in science. Using collaborative partnerships helped many teachers to use technology with their students and increased their motivation and enthusiasm towards technology based training. The study demonstrates that an approach to professional development that encourages networking, mutual learning, and sharing of strategies and resources among science educators is an effective strategy to improve technology integration in science education. Abstract

In high school biology, students are challenged by many molecular concepts and structures. They meander through a number of molecular structures, some in macromolecular form: carbohydrates, amino acids, fatty acids, nucleotides. Student difficulties arise in part from inability to visualize what they can't easily see. Students struggle moving from chemical name to symbolic chemical formula and from symbolic representation to the physical one. The problem with physical representation resides at opposite ends: the macroscopic level of directly observable physical and chemical properties and the microscopic level of molecular form and dimensions.

29. Results of Abdominal Sacrocolpopexy and Le Fort Colpocleisis: Our Experiences at Urology Clinic.

Abstract

Introduction: Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) can be the source of discomfort for women, leading to issues such as urinary incontinence, discomfort from herniated organs, and sexual dysfunction. In this study, our aim is to sh are our experiences with abdominal sacrocolpopexy and colpocleisis. Materials and Methods: In the study, 28 patients who underwent POP surgery between January 1, 2011 and November 1, 2022 were included. All patients had POP-Q stage 3 and above. Age, comorbidities, previous gynecological operations, history of prolapse and urinary incontinence surgery, and quality of life were recorded. In the postoperative period, the patients were followed up i n terms of complications, incontinence and recurrence. Results: A total of 28 patients underwent surgical treatment for POP, with 22 undergoing abdominal sacrocolpopexy and 6 undergoing Le Fort colpocleisis. Since 17 of the patients undergoing sacrocolpopexy had stress urinary incontinence, additional Burch colpo suspension was applied. Two patients who underwent sacrocolpopexy developed de novo urge incontinence. These patients benefited from med ical treatment. No cases of incontinence developed in the colpocleisis group. There were no recurrences observed in any of th e cases. Conclusion: Abdominal sacrocolpopexy and colpocleisis are methods with high success and satisfaction rates. Colpocleisis surgery stands out with shorter hospital stay. These patients should be well informed in terms of sexual life, and if there is concomitant stress urinary incontinence, it is recommended to perform the necessary surgery before colpocleisis. 44. Urban High School Students' IT/STEM Learning: Findings from a Collaborative Inquiry- and Design-Based Afterschool Program

Abstract

This exploratory study examines the impact of a collaborative inquiry- and design-based afterschool program on urban high school students' IT/STEM learning--using information technology (IT) within the context of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The study used a mixed methods design, involving 77 participants within two cohort groups, each participating in an eighteen-month intervention period. Data were collected from the pre- and post-surveys, analysis of the participants' IT/STEM projects, external evaluation reports, and follow-up interviews. Findings indicate that the program had a significant impact on students' technology and IT/STEM skills, frequency of technology use, and understanding of IT use in STEM-oriented fields. Some degree of impact on attitude changes toward IT/STEM and career aspirations in these fields was also in evidence. The study demonstrates that IT/STEM experiences supported through technology-enhanced, inquiry- and design-based collaborative learning strategies have significant impact on urban high school students' IT/STEM learning. Effect of afterschool programs on attitude changes and IT/STEM-related career aspirations of urban high school students are recommended areas of further investigation.

This paper describes and analyzes one model for drawing these three components coherently together in a teacher preparation program. The paper further reports on a research project that applies this model at a major Midwest research university. In the conclusion section the paper identifies and discusses ways in which the model presented responds effectively to the need for a comprehensive program for preparing a technology-proficient teaching force.

46. Teaching Social Studies with Technology: New Research on Collaborative Approaches

Abstract

Meeting the demands of teaching in the digital age requires the identification of effective types of educational technology and ways of encouraging its use, and that was the aim of a "Preparing Tomorrow's Teachers to use Technology (PT3)" grant to the University of Michigan-Dearborn, from the United States Department of Education. This grant funded a four-year program involving not only public school teachers in the Detroit area, but also the faculty in the education and social sciences departments of the university. Dubbed "The MITTEN Program," it explored how the planned integration of new forms of technology affects instruction in social studies in elementary, middle, and high schools. This article presents a report on the outcomes of the project. During each year of the MITTEN program, the University of Michigan-Dearborn had the highest number of recipients of awards from the Consortium for Outstanding Achievement in Teaching with Technology (COATT) in the state of Michigan. Eight awards were given to student teachers in the field of social studies. Fundamental to MITTEN's success as a program were its provision for training in emerging technologies for educators and its facilitation of collaboration between people in different fields. The program provided educators with the opportunity to share resources and learn together. The planned integration of technology positively affected student learning in K-12 classrooms by increasing the level of student interest. The use of electronic resources also improved the quality of the research conducted by both students and teachers. After completing the program, educators reported that they felt better able to use technology to enhance teaching and research. The findings of research on the MITTEN project show that collaborative approaches to teaching social studies with technology can produce optimal results. 47. Using Anchored Instruction to Teach Preservice Teachers to Integrate Technology in the Curriculum

Abstract

This case study addresses the use of the "anchored instruction approach" to restructure educational computing courses to enhance future teachers' learning of technology applications in the classroom. A cohort group of 22 preservice teachers from a typical teacher education institution in Southeastern Ohio was involved in the study. The preservice teachers were enrolled in both a curriculum development class and an educational computing class in the winter 2000 academic quarter. The instructors for both courses collaborated their teaching efforts whereby the preservice teachers used the educational computing class to research, record, and document their experiences in the curriculum development class. The theme of the curriculum development class was therefore used as an "anchor" for the educational computing class. Data collection and analysis were conducted on a continuous basis throughout the academic quarter. The findings indicate the effectiveness of anchored instruction for preservice teachers to learn about, and teach with advanced technology tools in their future practice. The authors recommend increased efforts to apply anchored instruction approach in educational computing courses.
