1. Determination of Creative Story Writing Skill Levels of Secondary School 7th Grade Students

Abstract: The present study aimed to determine the creative story writing skill levels of seventh grade middle school students. The research is a quantitative research and designed in survey design. The sample of the research consisted of a total of 121 seventh grade middle school students who were determined by convenience sampling technique. The research data were obtained by having the students in the sample write creative story texts and evaluating these texts with a rubric developed by the researcher. The collected data were presented as descriptive statistics (frequency, min. and max. values, mean and standard deviation) with the help of statistical software. As a result of the research, the scores of the students' creative story writing skills were generally low and medium level. In addition, in terms of sub-dimensions, except for two sub-dimensions (imagination, form), the students' mean scores were found to be low and medium level.

2. Analyzing Teacher Candidates' Arguments on AI Integration in Education via Different Chatbots

Abstract: The burgeoning role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education prompts crucial discussions regarding its implications for teaching and learning. This qualitative study probes the argumentative perspectives of 118 teacher candidates from Igdir University on the integration of AI into educational practices. Employing Toulmin's (1958) model, we analyzed their arguments, which encompass claims, evidence, warrants, backings, rebuttals, and conclusions, to ascertain their stance on AI's pedagogical integration. Utilizing four distinct AI chatbots--GPT-4, Gemini AI, Claude 3 Haiku, and Mistral AI--the research deciphers thematic undercurrents within these dimensions. Moreover, a novel methodological contribution is made through 'negative space exploration', focusing on the unmentioned themes to identify latent biases and assumptions in the argumentation. The study's dual analytical approach, combining AI-driven theme identification and negative space exploration, resulted in an enriched understanding of the content. Key findings suggest a nuanced perception among participants: while AI chatbots are acknowledged for enhancing educational efficiency and enabling personalized learning, concerns regarding diminished human interaction, potential erosion of critical thinking skills, and ethical use persist. The analyses also highlight the need for a balanced AI implementation that supports, not supplants, traditional educational methods. This research contributes to the ongoing debate on effective AI integration in education and calls for responsible pedagogical adoption of AI technologies.

3. Epoch-based Application of Problem-Aware Operators in a Multiobjective Memetic Algorithm for Portfolio Optimization

Abstract: We consider the issue of intensification/diversification balance in the context of a memetic algorithm for the multiobjective optimization of investment portfolios with cardinality constraints. We approach this issue in this work by considering the selective application of knowledge-augmented operators (local search and a memory of elite solutions) based on the search epoch in which the algorithm finds itself, hence alternating between unbiased search (guided uniquely by the built-in search mechanics of the algorithm) and focused search (intensified by the use of the problem-aware operators). These operators exploit Sharpe index (a measure of the relationship between return and risk) as a source of problem knowledge. We have conducted a sensibility analysis to determine in which phases of the search the application of these operators leads to better results. Our findings indicate that the resulting algorithm is quite robust in terms of parameterization from the point of view of this problem-specific indicator. Furthermore, it is shown that not only can other non-memetic counterparts be outperformed, but that there is a range of parameters in which the MA is also competitive when not better in terms of standard multiobjective performance indicators., Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures

Abstract: The design of fast reactors burning MOX fuels requires accurate capture and fission cross sections. For the particular case of neutron capture on 242Pu, the NEA recommends that an accuracy of 8-12% should be achieved in the fast energy region (2 keV-500 keV) compared to their estimation of 35% for the current uncertainty. Integral irradiation experiments suggest that the evaluated cross section of the JEFF-3.1 library overestimates the 242Pu(n,{\gamma}) cross section by 14% in the range between 1 keV and 1 MeV. In addition, the last measurement at LANSCE reported a systematic reduction of 20-30% in the 1-40 keV range relative to the evaluated libraries and previous data sets. In the present work this cross section has been determined up to 600 keV in order to solve the mentioned discrepancies. A 242Pu target of 95(4) mg enriched to 99.959% was irradiated at the n TOF-EAR1 facility at CERN. The capture cross section of 242Pu has been obtained between 1 and 600 keV with a systematic uncertainty (dominated by background subtraction) between 8 and 12%, reducing the current uncertainties of 35% and achieving the accuracy requested by the NEA in a large energy range. The shape of the cross section has been analyzed in terms of average resonance parameters using the FITACS code as implemented in SAMMY, yielding results compatible with our recent analysis of the resolved resonance region.The results are in good agreement with the data of Wisshak and K\"appeler and on average 10-14% below JEFF-3.2 from 1 to 250 keV, which helps to achieve consistency between integral experiments and cross section data. At higher energies our results show a reasonable agreement within uncertainties with both ENDF/B-VII.1 and JEFF-3.2. 5. A rounding and clustering-based exact algorithm for the p-center problem

Abstract: The p-center problem consists in selecting p facilities from a set of possible sites and allocating a set of clients to them in such a way that the maximum distance between a client and the facility to which it is allocated is minimized. This paper proposes a new scalable exact solution algorithm based on client clustering and an iterative distance rounding procedure. The client clustering enables to initialize and update a subset of clients for which the p-center problem is iteratively solved. The rounding drastically reduces the number of distinct distances considered at each iteration. Our algorithm is tested on 396 benchmark instances with up to 1.9 million clients and facilities. We outperform the two state-of-the-art exact methods considered when p is not very small (i.e., p > 5).

Abstract: Challenging neutron-capture cross-section measurements of small cross sections and samples with a very limited number of atoms require high-flux time-of-flight facilities. In turn, such facilities need innovative detection setups that are fast, have low sensitivity to neutrons, can quickly recover from the so-called $\gamma$-flash, and offer the highest possible detection sensitivity. In this paper, we present several steps toward such advanced systems. Specifically, we describe the performance of a high-sensitivity experimental setup at CERN n\_TOF EAR2. It consists of nine sTED detector modules in a compact cylindrical configuration, two conventional used large-volume C$_{6}$D$_{6}$ detectors, and one LaCl$_{3}$(Ce) detector. The performance of these detection systems is compared using $^{93}$Nb($n$,$\gamma$) data. We also developed a detailed \textsc{Geant4} Monte Carlo model of the experimental EAR2 setup, which allows for a better understanding of the detector features, including their efficiency determination. This Monte Carlo model has been used for further optimization, thus leading to a new conceptual design of a $\gamma$ detector array, STAR, based on a deuterated-stilbene crystal array. Finally, the suitability of deuterated-stilbene crystals for the future STAR array is investigaged experimentally utilizing a small stilbene-d12 prototype. The results suggest a similar or superior performance of STAR with respect to other setups based on liquid-scintillators, and allow for additional features such as neutron-gamma discrimination and a higher level of customization capability.

7. Mathematical properties of Klein-Gordon-Boussinesq systems

Abstract: The Klein-Gordon-Boussinesq (KGB) system is proposed in the literature as a model problem to study the validity of approximations in the long wave limit provided by simpler equations such as KdV, nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger or Whitham equations. In this paper, the KGB system is analyzed as a mathematical model in three specific points. The first one concerns well-posedness of the initial-value problem with the study of local existence and uniqueness of solution and the conditions under which the local solution is global or blows up at finite time. The second point is focused on traveling wave solutions of the KGB system. The existence of different types of solitary waves is derived from two classical approaches, while from their numerical generation several properties of the solitary wave profiles are studied. In addition, the validity of the KdV approximation is analyzed by computational means and from the corresponding KdV soliton solutions.

8. Q-CSM: Q-Learning-based Cognitive Service Management in Heterogeneous IoT Networks

Abstract: The dramatic increase in the number of smart services and their diversity poses a significant challenge in Internet of Things (IoT) networks: heterogeneity. This causes significant quality of service (QoS) degradation in IoT networks. In addition, the constraints of IoT devices in terms of computational capability and energy resources add extra complexity to this. However, the current studies remain insufficient to solve this problem due to the lack of cognitive action recommendations. Therefore, we propose a Q-learning-based Cognitive Service Management framework called Q-CSM. In this framework, we first design an IoT Agent Manager to handle the heterogeneity in data formats. After that, we design a Q-learning-based recommendation engine to optimize the devices' lifetime according to the predicted QoS behaviour of the changing IoT network scenarios. We apply the proposed cognitive management to a smart city scenario consisting of three specific services: wind turbines, solar panels, and transportation systems. We note that our proposed cognitive method achieves 38.7% faster response time to the dynamical IoT changes in topology. Furthermore, the proposed framework achieves 19.8% longer lifetime on average for constrained IoT devices thanks to its Q-learning-based cognitive decision capability. In addition, we explore the most successive learning rate value in the Q-learning run through the exploration and exploitation phases.

9. Generative AI-enabled Digital Twins for 6G-enhanced Smart Cities

Abstract: 6G networks are envisioned to enable a wide range of applications, such as autonomous vehicles and smart cities. However, this rapid expansion of network topologies makes the management of 6G wireless networks more complex and leads to performance degradation. Even though state-of-the-art applications on network services are providing promising results, they also risk disrupting the network's performance. To overcome this, the services have to leverage what-if implementations covering a variety of scenarios. At this point, traditional simulations fall short of encompassing the dynamism and complexity of a physical network. To overcome these challenges, we propose the Generative AI-based Digital Twins. For this, we derive an optimization formula to differentiate different network scenarios by considering the specific key performance indicators (KPIs) for wireless networks. Then, we fed this formula to the generative AI with the historical twins and real-time twins to start generating the desired topologies. To evaluate the performance, we implement network and smart-city-oriented services, namely massive connectivity, tiny instant communication, right-time synchronization, and truck path routes. The simulation results reveal that our approach can achieve 38% more stable network throughput in high device density scenarios. Furthermore, the generated scenario accuracy is able to reach up to 98% level, surpassing the baselines.

10. Long-term behaviour of symmetric partitioned linear multistep methods I. Global error and conservation of invariants

Abstract: In this paper an asymptotic expansion of the global error on the stepsize for partitioned linear multistep methods is proved. This provides a tool to analyse the behaviour of these integrators with respect to error growth with time and conservation of invariants. In particular, symmetric partitioned linear multistep methods with no common roots in their first characteristic polynomials, except unity, appear as efficient methods to approximate non-separable Hamiltonian systems since they can be explicit and show good long term behaviour at the same time. As a case study, a thorough analysis is given for small oscillations of the double pendulum problem, which is illustrated by numerical experiments.

11. BONE: a unifying framework for Bayesian online learning in non-stationary environments

Abstract: We propose a unifying framework for methods that perform Bayesian online learning in non-stationary environments. We call the framework BONE, which stands for (B)ayesian (O)nline learning in (N)on-stationary (E)nvironments. BONE provides a common structure to tackle a variety of problems, including online continual learning, prequential forecasting, and contextual bandits. The framework requires specifying three modelling choices: (i) a model for measurements (e.g., a neural network), (ii) an auxiliary process to model non-stationarity (e.g., the time since the last changepoint), and (iii) a conditional prior over model parameters (e.g., a multivariate Gaussian). The framework also requires two algorithmic choices, which we use to carry out approximate inference under this framework: (i) an algorithm to estimate beliefs (posterior distribution) about the model parameters given the auxiliary variable, and (ii) an algorithm to estimate beliefs about the auxiliary variable. We show how this modularity allows us to write many different existing methods as instances of BONE; we also use this framework to propose a new method. We then experimentally compare existing methods with our proposed new method on several datasets; we provide insights into the situations that make one method more suitable than another for a given task.

Abstract: Ever since they were first detected in the interstellar medium, the radio wavelength (3.3 GHz) hyperfine-structure splitting transitions in the rotational ground state of CH have been observed to show anomalous excitation. Astonishingly, this behaviour has been uniformly observed towards a variety of different sources probing a wide range of physical conditions. While the observed level inversion can be explained globally by a pumping scheme involving collisions, a description of the extent of 'over-excitation' observed in individual sources requires the inclusion of radiative processes, involving transitions at higher rotational levels. Therefore, a complete description of the excitation mechanism in the CH ground state, observed towards individual sources entails observational constraints from the rotationally excited levels of CH and in particular that of its first rotationally excited state. Given the limited detections of these lines, the objective of this work is to characterise the physical and excitation properties of the rotationally excited lines of CH near 700 MHz, and investigate their influence on the pumping mechanisms of the ground-state lines of CH. 13. Conformal Boundary as Holographic Dual to the Hyperbolic Fracton Model

Abstract: In addition to describing our universe, gravitational theories profoundly inspire the study of emergent properties of exotic phases of matter. While the Anti-de Sitter/conformal field theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence is one of the most celebrated examples, the field of fractonic matter -- driven in part by gapless phases resembling linearized gravity -- has also seen rapid developments. Despite the deep implications of both areas, connections between them remain sparse, primarily due to the difficulty in constructing explicit models that encapsulate both fields' essential features. Here we demonstrate the efficacy of the recently proposed Hyperbolic Fracton Model as a concrete model for AdS/CFT duality. Using explicit numerical and analytical calculations on the discrete hyperbolic lattice, we show that the boundary state exhibits conformal field theory properties. Our main result is that bulk defects induce an emergent temperature for the boundary state, proportional to the defect perimeter, in quantitative agreement with the expected behaviour of a black hole in AdS spacetime. The Hyperbolic Fracton Model thus emerges as a unique lattice model of holographic principle equipped with a well-defined bulk Hamiltonian, and offers a promising gateway for studying a wide range of holographic phenomena., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: We present the results of a search for gravitational-wave transients associated with core-collapse supernova SN 2023ixf, which was observed in the galaxy Messier 101 via optical emission on 2023 May 19th, during the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA 15th Engineering Run. We define a five-day on-source window during which an accompanying gravitational-wave signal may have occurred. No gravitational waves have been identified in data when at least two gravitational-wave observatories were operating, which covered $\sim 14\%$ of this five-day window. We report the search detection efficiency for various possible gravitational-wave emission models. Considering the distance to M101 (6.7 Mpc), we derive constraints on the gravitational-wave emission mechanism of core-collapse supernovae across a broad frequency spectrum, ranging from 50 Hz to 2 kHz where we assume the GW emission occurred when coincident data are available in the on-source window. Considering an ellipsoid model for a rotating proto-neutron star, our search is sensitive to gravitational-wave energy $1 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2$ and luminosity $4 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2/\text{s}$ for a source emitting at 50 Hz. These constraints are around an order of magnitude more stringent than those obtained so far with gravitational-wave data. The constraint on the ellipticity of the proto-neutron star that is formed is as low as $1.04$, at frequencies above $1200$ Hz, surpassing results from SN 2019ejj., Comment: Main paper: 6 pages, 4 figures and 1 table. Abstract: Understanding the origins of complexity is a fundamental challenge with implications for biological and technological systems. Network theory emerges as a powerful tool to model complex systems. Networks are an intuitive framework to represent inter-dependencies among many system components, facilitating the study of both local and global properties. However, it is unclear whether we can define a universal theoretical framework for evolving networks. While basic growth mechanisms, like preferential attachment, recapitulate common properties such as the power-law degree distribution, they fall short in capturing other system-specific properties. Tinkering, on the other hand, has shown to be very successful in generating modular or nested structures "for-free", highlighting the role of internal, non-adaptive mechanisms in the evolution of complexity. Different network extensions, like hypergraphs, have been recently developed to integrate exogenous factors in evolutionary models, as pairwise interactions are insufficient to capture environmentally-mediated species associations. 17. Risk Assessment for Autonomous Landing in Urban Environments using Semantic Segmentation

Abstract: In this paper, we address the vision-based autonomous landing problem in complex urban environments using deep neural networks for semantic segmentation and risk assessment. We propose employing the SegFormer, a state-of-the-art visual transformer network, for the semantic segmentation of complex, unstructured urban environments. This approach yields valuable information that can be utilized in smart autonomous landing missions, particularly in emergency landing scenarios resulting from system failures or human errors. The assessment is done in real-time flight, when images of an RGB camera at the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) are segmented with the SegFormer into the most common classes found in urban environments. These classes are then mapped into a level of risk, considering in general, potential material damage, damaging the drone itself and endanger people. The proposed strategy is validated through several case studies, demonstrating the huge potential of semantic segmentation-based strategies to determining the safest landing areas for autonomous emergency landing, which we believe will help unleash the full potential of UAVs on civil applications within urban areas.

Abstract: Measurements of the EMC effect in the tritium and helium-3 mirror nuclei are reported. The data were obtained by the MARATHON Jefferson Lab experiment, which performed deep inelastic electron scattering from deuterium and the three-body nuclei, using a cryogenic gas target system and the High Resolution Spectrometers of the Hall A Facility of the Lab. The data cover the Bjorken $x$ range from 0.20 to 0.83, corresponding to a squared four-momentum transfer $Q^2$ range from 2.7 to $11.9\gevsq$, and to an invariant mass $W$ of the final hadronic state greater than 1.84 GeV/${\it c}^2$. The tritium EMC effect measurement is the first of its kind. The MARATHON experimental results are compared to results from previous measurements by DESY-HERMES and JLab-Hall C experiments, as well as with few-body theoretical predictions., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2104.05850

Abstract: The magnetar SGR 1935+2154 is the only known Galactic source of fast radio bursts (FRBs). FRBs from SGR 1935+2154 were first detected by CHIME/FRB and STARE2 in 2020 April, after the conclusion of the LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA Collaborations' O3 observing run. Here we analyze four periods of gravitational wave (GW) data from the GEO600 detector coincident with four periods of FRB activity detected by CHIME/FRB, as well as X-ray glitches and X-ray bursts detected by NICER and NuSTAR close to the time of one of the FRBs. We do not detect any significant GW emission from any of the events. Instead, using a short-duration GW search (for bursts $\leq$ 1 s) we derive 50\% (90\%) upper limits of $10^{48}$ ($10^{49}$) erg for GWs at 300 Hz and $10^{49}$ ($10^{50}$) erg at 2 kHz, and constrain the GW-to-radio energy ratio to $\leq 10^{14} - 10^{16}$. We also derive upper limits from a long-duration search for bursts with durations between 1 and 10 s. 20. On the existence of traveling wave solutions for cold plasmas

Abstract: The present paper is concerned with the existence of traveling wave solutions of the asymptotic model, derived by the authors in a previous work, to approximate the unidirectional evolution of a collision-free plasma in a magnetic field. First, using bifurcation theory, we can rigorously prove the existence of periodic traveling waves of small amplitude. Furthermore, our analysis also evidences the existence of different type of traveling waves. To this end, we present a second approach based on the analysis of the differential system satisfied by the traveling-wave profiles, the existence of equilibria, and the identification of associated homo-clinic and periodic orbits around them. Abstract: Neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) is a rare nuclear process that, if observed, will provide insight into the nature of neutrinos and help explain the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe. The Large Enriched Germanium Experiment for Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay (LEGEND) will operate in two phases to search for $0\nu\beta\beta$. The first (second) stage will employ 200 (1000) kg of High-Purity Germanium (HPGe) enriched in $^{76}$Ge to achieve a half-life sensitivity of 10$^{27}$ (10$^{28}$) years. In this study, we present a semi-supervised data-driven approach to remove non-physical events captured by HPGe detectors powered by a novel artificial intelligence model. We utilize Affinity Propagation to cluster waveform signals based on their shape and a Support Vector Machine to classify them into different categories. We train, optimize, test our model on data taken from a natural abundance HPGe detector installed in the Full Chain Test experimental stand at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. We demonstrate that our model yields a maximum physics event sacrifice of $0.024 ^{+0.004}_{-0.003} \%$ when performing data cleaning cuts. 22. Small Language Models Like Small Vocabularies: Probing the Linguistic Abilities of Grapheme- and Phoneme-Based Baby Llamas

Abstract: Current language models use subword-based tokenization algorithms like Byte Pair Encoding, which put their validity as models of linguistic representations into question. In this paper, we explore the potential of tokenization-free, phoneme- and grapheme-based language models. We demonstrate that small models based on the Llama architecture can achieve strong linguistic performance on standard syntactic and novel lexical/phonetic benchmarks when trained with character-level vocabularies. We further show that phoneme-based models without any graphemic biases almost match grapheme-based models in standard tasks and novel evaluations. Our findings suggest a promising direction for creating more linguistically plausible language models that are better suited for computational studies of language acquisition and processing.

23. A Generalized Approach to Root-based Attacks against PLWE

Abstract: The Polynomial Learning With Errors problem (PLWE) serves as the background of two of the three cryptosystems standardized in August 2024 by the National Institute of Standards and Technology to replace non-quantum resistant current primitives like those based on RSA, Diffie-Hellman or its elliptic curve analogue. Although PLWE is highly believed to be quantum resistant, this fact has not yet been established, contrariwise to other post-quantum proposals like multivariate and some code based ones. Moreover, several vulnerabilities have been encountered for a number of specific instances. In a search for more flexibility, it becomes fully relevant to study the robustness of PLWE based on other polynomials, not necessarily cyclotomic. In 2015, Elias et al found a good number of attacks based on different features of the roots of the polynomial. In the present work we present an overview of the approximations made against PLWE derived from this and subsequent works, along with several new attacks which refine those by Elias et al. exploiting the order of the trace of roots over finite extensions of the finite field under the three scenarios laid out by Elias et al., allowing to generalize the setting in which the attacks can be carried out.

24. Unveiling the Impact of Design Methods on Problem-Solving Performance in Undergraduate STEM Education

Abstract: Problem-solving is at the core of engineering design, being fundamental for systematic innovation. During their education, students are taught numerous methods and tools, despite that literature shows debatable results regarding their real impact. Consequently, this study aims to quantify the relative impact of design methods on undergraduate students' problem-solving performance and determine if this influence goes beyond their background and the problem's complexity. Utilising novelty, variety, and quality as criteria, the work done by 144 students was evaluated, solving two problems using three methods. The results show a performance improvement of up to 46% when working with methods that guide solution development through design principles. The context and the student method preference did not affect their performance, while the increment in the problem's difficulty improved novelty and variety (15% and 11%) but reduced quality (34%). Surprisingly, the best-performance method was the least preferred, indicating the need of exploring the relationship between performance and actual use. The study results validate the work invested in teaching design methods, indicating the characteristics of the most efficient ones, beyond expert opinion. The structure of the study allows replication and could help future comparison of results.

25. The Biology Teacher Profile of Junior and Senior High School and the Use of Learning Models in Ternate Indonesia

Abstract: The implementation of instructional models in the classroom significantly impacts students' learning abilities and achievements. The adoption of a teacher-centered learning approach might lead to reduced student engagement in the learning process, consequently influencing their ability to acquire life skills. The current study aimed to determine the educational attainment, teaching experience, utilization of learning media and application of learning models by junior and senior high school biology teachers in Ternate, Indonesia. This study employed a qualitative research method that utilized survey questionnaires. The respondents were 25 biology teachers of junior high school and 30 biology teachers of senior high school. The research findings showed that (1) 84% of the junior high school biology teachers have the undergraduate education and 16% of them have the master education; 69.77% of those of the senior high school have the undergraduate education and 30.23% of them have the master education. (2) Both the junior and the senior high school biology teachers have over 15 years of teaching experience. (3) Among the junior high school biology teachers, the use of student worksheet is only 20%, and the use of learning media is 14%; Among the senior high school biology teachers, the use of student worksheet is 36.66% and the use of learning media is 23.33%. (4) The uses of conventional learning and the use of cooperative learnings among junior high school biology teachers are 83% and 17%, respectively; where as among those of senior high school are 73.34% and 26.66%, respectively. In conclusion, the educational qualifications of junior and senior high school biology teachers in Ternate have satisfied the necessary criteria for teaching. However, the teachers have not been able to enhance the quality of education in the city. This highlights the importance of developing innovative learning models to improve the learning abilities and achievements.

26. The Practice of Science and Religion Integration: Evidence from an Indonesian Islamic School

Abstract: This paper answers the call for the importance of integrating the Islamic worldview into science classes. This research provides insights into science teachers' experiences of integrating science and Islam, as well as additional surveys to reveal gains in student understanding. This research consists of two stages. Study 1 used phenomenology and focused on the voice of science teachers through focus groups. This research involved five focus groups in five Islamic high schools providing information describing their experiences. Through thematic analysis techniques, several findings were obtained as follows: (1) the concept of integration emphasises more on the balance of compliance between vertical and horizontal; (2) the integration pattern places more emphasis on learning materials; and (3) in terms of benefits, this effort is focused on increasing understanding and followed by study 2 which aims to add to the evidence base by investigating the effect of integration patterns on student understanding. The results showed that there is evidence that the support of an overarching integration pattern contributes to students' understanding of the material. As a recommendation, it is necessary to strengthen integration at all stages of science learning, allowing students to take advantage of discussions in class to develop more relevant abilities.

27. Determinants of Grade Repetition in Spain. Analysis of Cognitive and Socio-Economic, Mediated by Ethnic Factors

Abstract: Grade repetition is an issue with important educational implications. This study analyzes the effect of cognitive variables, socio-economic status, as well as the interaction of socioeconomic status with ethnic origin, on the probability of not repeating. Data were collected to calculate socioeconomic status using the Hollingshead Socioeconomic Index, and the following tests were administered to collect information on cognitive variables: the Primary Mental Aptitude Test (PMA), the Raven's Progressive Matrices Test, and the Wechsler Intelligence for Children Information Scale (WISC IV). The sample consisted of 664 students of Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO), Baccalaureate and intermediate and higher vocational training. The results confirm the predictive power of socioeconomic status. With regard to cognitive variables, significant results were only obtained when the WISC-IV Information Scale was taken as a predictor, this measure being related to crystallized intelligence. The influence of the origin of the students did not yield significant results. There is a clear need for a debate and a rethinking of the issue leading to the identification of new strategies to reduce grade repetition and its negative effects.

28. Development of a Scoring Key to Evaluate the Creative Story Writing Levels of Secondary School Seventh Grade Students

Abstract: In this study, it was aimed to develop a rubric to evaluate the creative story writing skill levels of seventh grade secondary school students. The research was designed in quantitative research method and survey model. In the research, convenience sampling technique was used and 270 students studying at the seventh grade level of secondary school were studied. In the process of creating the item pool of the research, 11 academicians, 8 teachers and 7 graduate students were consulted. In order to create an item pool, firstly, a literature review was conducted. The prepared item pool was presented to the field experts and the draft scale was applied to the sample group. As a result of the findings obtained, it was concluded that there was a high level of consistency between the evaluations made by different raters. The validity studies of the scale were conducted and it was determined that the content and criterion validity were appropriate. In order to determine the reliability of the scale items, Cronbach's Alpha value was determined. It was determined that the Cronbach's Alpha value of the scale with all sub-dimensions was above 0.7. Cohen's Kappa statistic ([kappa]) was used to ensure internal consistency between raters (p<0.05). As a result of the analyses, it was determined that there was almost perfect agreement in the items in the scale. Finally, Cohen's Kappa coefficient was determined to determine whether there was agreement between the raters, and a significant level of agreement was found between the raters of the scale. In addition, as a result of the results obtained from the expert opinions, it was decided that the rubric should consist of 6 dimensions and 24 items in total, namely "imagination", "originality", "different perspective", "content", "language and expression", "form", and five levels, namely "strongly agree", "agree", "partially agree", "disagree" and "strongly disagree".

Abstract: Computational models are an essential tool for the design, characterization, and discovery of novel materials. Computationally hard tasks in materials science stretch the limits of existing high-performance supercomputing centers, consuming much of their resources for simulation, analysis, and data processing. Quantum computing, on the other hand, is an emerging technology with the potential to accelerate many of the computational tasks needed for materials science. In order to do that, the quantum technology must interact with conventional high-performance computing in several ways: approximate results validation, identification of hard problems, and synergies in quantum-centric supercomputing. In this paper, we provide a perspective on how quantum-centric supercomputing can help address critical computational problems in materials science, the challenges to face in order to solve representative use cases, and new suggested directions.

Abstract: IntroductionAlzheimer's disease (AD) disproportionately affects minoritized populations who remain underrepresented in AD trials.MethodsWe partnered with local nursing community-based organizations to implement a culturally tailored educational intervention and recruit Hispanic/Latino American, Filipino American, and Korean American adults aged 55 to 80 for the AHEAD study, a preclinical AD trial, at the University of California, Irvine.ResultsWe engaged 654 individuals across 21 events, leading to 71 prescreenings: 21.1% Filipino, 11.2% Hispanic/Latino, and 67.6% Korean adults. Ineligibility due to age and language barriers was common among Hispanic/Latino and Korean adults, respectively. Filipino adults often withdrew interest or were lost to follow-up. Ultimately, 25 participants enrolled: eight Filipino, two Hispanic/Latino, and 15 Korean adults. Tailored, culturally relevant content significantly contributed to the engagement success.DiscussionThis study demonstrates the value and impact of novel partnerships with health-related provider organizations that provide trusted care and access to underrepresented communities.HighlightsSix hundred and fifty four underrepresented individuals were reached, and 25 enrolled in the AHEAD 3-45 trial. Twenty-one community events were held via partnerships with nursing and community organizations. The study engaged 21% Filipino, 11% Hispanic/Latino, 68% Korean adults. Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) principles enhanced the recruitment process. Transparent communication and joint planning were key.

Abstract: Excessive growth hormone (GH) has been shown to promote joint degeneration in both preclinical and clinical studies. Little is known about the effect of disrupted GH or GH receptor (GHR) on joint health. The goal of this study is to investigate joint pathology in mice with either germline (GHR-/-) or adult inducible (iGHR-/-) GHR deficiency. Knee joints from male and female GHR-/- and WT mice at 24 months of age were processed for histological analysis. Also, knee joints from male and female iGHR-/- and WT mice at 22 months of age were scanned by micro-CT (μCT) for subchondral bone changes and characterized via histology for cartilage degeneration. Joint sections were also stained for the chondrocyte hypertrophy marker, COLX, and the cartilage degeneration marker, ADAMTS-5, using immunohistochemistry. Compared to WT mice, GHR-/- mice had remarkably smooth articular joint surfaces and an even distribution of proteoglycan with no signs of degeneration. Quantitatively, GHR-/- mice had lower OARSI and Mankin scores compared to WT controls. By contrast, iGHR-/- mice were only moderately protected from developing aging-associated OA. iGHR-/- mice had a significantly lower Mankin score compared to WT. However, Mankin scores were not significantly different between iGHR-/- and WT when males and females were analyzed separately. OARSI scores did not differ significantly between WT and iGHR-/- in either individual or combined sex analyses. Both GHR-/- and iGHR-/- mice had fewer COLX+ hypertrophic chondrocytes compared to WT, while no significant difference was observed in ADAMTS-5 staining. Compared to WT, a significantly lower trabecular thickness in the subchondral bone was observed in the iGHR-/- male mice but not in the female mice. However, there were no significant differences between WT and iGHR-/- mice in the bone volume to total tissue volume (BV/TV), bone mineral density (BMD), and trabecular number in either sex. This study identified that both germline and adult-induced GHR deficiency protected mice from developing aging-associated OA with more effective protection in GHR-/- mice.

Abstract: Superconductors exhibit remarkable properties such as zero resistivity and diamagnetism at the boiling temperature of liquid hydrogen (20 K) and even aboven the boiling temperature of liquid nitrogen (77 K), making them promising candidates for various applications including electrical engines, energy generation, storage, and high-tech devices like single photon detectors. In this overview, we explore the correlation between ceramic superconductors and the United Nations (UN) Development Goals, emphasizing their potential impact on sustainable development. Through bibliometric analysis, we underscore the significance of ceramic superconductors in addressing global challenges outlined by the UN. Additionally, we discuss the application of supermagnets and second-generation tapes in healthcare systems, particularly in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) devices for diagnostic imaging. Electric superconducting motors offer a clean alternative to highly polluting diesel engines in maritime transportation and superconducting wires/cables enable effective transport of energy on large scale as well as in industrial structures. Magnetic levitation technology holds promise for developing zero-emission public transportation systems, and magnetic separation with strong magnets will contribute to solve the microplastic pollution. The combination of superconductivity with the planned hydrogen economy further offers new possibilities to bring superconductivity to common applications. At the nanoscale, superconducting nanowire single photon detectors (SNSPDs) enable real-time monitoring of environmental health, exemplified by applications in plant physiology, and superconducting qubits provide the best-engineered structures for quantum computers. Abstract: A measurement of the double-spin asymmetry from electron-$^{3}$He scattering in the threshold region of two- and three-body breakup of $^{3}$He was performed at Jefferson Lab, for Q$^{2}$ values of 0.1 and 0.2 (GeV/$c$)$^{2}$. The results of this measurement serve as a stringent test of our understanding of few-body systems. When compared with calculations from plane wave impulse approximation and Faddeev theory, we found that the Faddeev calculations, which use modern nuclear potentials and prescriptions for meson-exchange currents, demonstrate an overall good agreement with data.

Abstract: Nucleon structure functions, as measured in lepton-nucleon scattering, have historically provided a critical observable in the study of partonic dynamics within the nucleon. However, at very large parton momenta it is both experimentally and theoretically challenging to extract parton distributions due to the probable onset of non-perturbative contributions and the unavailability of high precision data at critical kinematics. Extraction of the neutron structure and the d-quark distribution have been further challenging due to the necessity of applying nuclear corrections when utilizing scattering data from a deuteron target to extract free neutron structure. However, a program of experiments has been carried out recently at the energy-upgraded Jefferson Lab electron accelerator aimed at significantly reducing the nuclear correction uncertainties on the d-quark distribution function at large partonic momentum. This allows leveraging the vast body of deuterium data covering a large kinematic range to be utilized for d-quark parton distribution function extraction. We present new data from experiment E12-10-002 carried out in Jefferson Lab Hall C on the deuteron to proton cross-section ratio at large BJorken-x. These results significantly improve the precision of existing data, and provide a first look at the expected impact on quark distributions extracted from global parton distribution function fits.

36. Mixed finite element and TPSA finite volume methods for linearized elasticity and Cosserat materials

Abstract: Cosserat theory of elasticity is a generalization of classical elasticity that allows for asymmetry in the stress tensor by taking into account micropolar rotations in the medium. The equations involve a rotation field and associated "couple stress" as variables, in addition to the conventional displacement and Cauchy stress fields. In recent work, we derived a mixed finite element method (MFEM) for the linear Cosserat equations that converges optimally in these four variables. The drawback of this method is that it retains the stresses as unknowns, and therefore leads to relatively large saddle point system that are computationally demanding to solve. As an alternative, we developed a finite volume method in which the stress variables are approximated using a minimal, two-point stencil (TPSA). The system consists of the displacement and rotation variables, with an additional "solid pressure" unknown. Both the MFEM and TPSA methods are robust in the incompressible limit and in the Cauchy limit, for which the Cosserat equations degenerate to classical linearized elasticity. 37. DenoMamba: A fused state-space model for low-dose CT denoising

Abstract: Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) lower potential risks linked to radiation exposure while relying on advanced denoising algorithms to maintain diagnostic quality in reconstructed images. The reigning paradigm in LDCT denoising is based on neural network models that learn data-driven image priors to separate noise evoked by dose reduction from underlying tissue signals. Naturally, the fidelity of these priors depend on the model's ability to capture the broad range of contextual features evident in CT images. Earlier convolutional neural networks (CNN) are highly adept at efficiently capturing short-range spatial context, but their limited receptive fields reduce sensitivity to interactions over longer distances. Although transformers based on self-attention mechanisms have recently been posed to increase sensitivity to long-range context, they can suffer from suboptimal performance and efficiency due to elevated model complexity, particularly for high-resolution CT images. For high-quality restoration of LDCT images, here we introduce DenoMamba, a novel denoising method based on state-space modeling (SSM), that efficiently captures short- and long-range context in medical images. Following an hourglass architecture with encoder-decoder stages, DenoMamba employs a spatial SSM module to encode spatial context and a novel channel SSM module equipped with a secondary gated convolution network to encode latent features of channel context at each stage. Feature maps from the two modules are then consolidated with low-level input features via a convolution fusion module (CFM). Comprehensive experiments on LDCT datasets with 25\% and 10\% dose reduction demonstrate that DenoMamba outperforms state-of-the-art denoisers with average improvements of 1.4dB PSNR, 1.1% SSIM, and 1.6% RMSE in recovered image quality.

38. Hardware-Friendly Implementation of Physical Reservoir Computing with CMOS-based Time-domain Analog Spiking Neurons

Abstract: This paper introduces an analog spiking neuron that utilizes time-domain information, i.e., a time interval of two signal transitions and a pulse width, to construct a spiking neural network (SNN) for a hardware-friendly physical reservoir computing (RC) on a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) platform. A neuron with leaky integrate-and-fire is realized by employing two voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs) with opposite sensitivities to the internal control voltage, and the neuron connection structure is restricted by the use of only 4 neighboring neurons on the 2-dimensional plane to feasibly construct a regular network topology. Such a system enables us to compose an SNN with a counter-based readout circuit, which simplifies the hardware implementation of the SNN. Moreover, another technical advantage thanks to the bottom-up integration is the capability of dynamically capturing every neuron state in the network, which can significantly contribute to finding guidelines on how to enhance the performance for various computational tasks in temporal information processing. Diverse nonlinear physical dynamics needed for RC can be realized by collective behavior through dynamic interaction between neurons, like coupled oscillators, despite the simple network structure. With behavioral system-level simulations, we demonstrate physical RC through short-term memory and exclusive OR tasks, and the spoken digit recognition task with an accuracy of 97.7% as well. Our system is considerably feasible for practical applications and also can be a useful platform for studying the mechanism of physical RC.

Abstract: In this paper, generalized Bell polynomials $(\Be_n^\phi)_n$ associated to a sequence of real numbers $\phi=(\phi_i)_{i=1}^\infty$ are introduced. Bell polynomials correspond to $\phi_i=0$, $i\ge 1$. We prove that when $\phi_i\ge 0$, $i\ge 1$: (a) the zeros of the generalized Bell polynomial $\Be_n^\phi$ are simple, real and non positive; (b) the zeros of $\Be_{n+1}^\phi$ interlace the zeros of $\Be_n^\phi$; (c) the zeros are decreasing functions of the parameters $\phi_i$. We find a hypergeometric representation for the generalized Bell polynomials. As a consequence, it is proved that the class of all generalized Bell polynomials is actually the same class as that of all Laguerre multiple polynomials of the first kind.

Abstract: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent environmental pollutants with known toxicity and bioaccumulation issues. Their widespread industrial use and resistance to degradation have led to global environmental contamination and significant health concerns. While a minority of PFAS have been extensively studied, the toxicity of many PFAS remains poorly understood due to limited direct toxicological data. This study advances the predictive modeling of PFAS toxicity by combining semi-supervised graph convolutional networks (GCNs) with molecular descriptors and fingerprints. We propose a novel approach to enhance the prediction of PFAS binding affinities by isolating molecular fingerprints to construct graphs where then descriptors are set as the node features. This approach specifically captures the structural, physicochemical, and topological features of PFAS without overfitting due to an abundance of features. Unsupervised clustering then identifies representative compounds for detailed binding studies. Abstract: Sea ice is a key element of the global Earth system, with a major impact on global climate and regional weather. Unfortunately, accurate sea ice modeling is challenging due to the diversity and complexity of underlying physics happening there, and a relative lack of ground truth observations. This is especially true for the Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ), which is the area where sea ice is affected by incoming ocean waves. Waves contribute to making the area dynamic, and due to the low survival time of the buoys deployed there, the MIZ is challenging to monitor. In 2022-2023, we released 79 OpenMetBuoys (OMBs) around Svalbard, both in the MIZ and the ocean immediately outside of it. OMBs are affordable enough to be deployed in large number, and gather information about drift (GPS position) and waves (1-dimensional elevation spectrum). This provides data focusing on the area around Svalbard with unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution. We expect that this will allow to perform validation and calibration of ice models and remote sensing algorithms.

Abstract: We report new pion electroproduction measurements in the $\Delta(1232)$ resonance, utilizing the SHMS - HMS magnetic spectrometers of Hall C at Jefferson Lab. The data focus on a region that exhibits a strong and rapidly changing interplay of the mesonic cloud and quark-gluon dynamics in the nucleon. The results are in reasonable agreement with models that employ pion cloud effects and chiral effective field theory calculations, but at the same time they suggest that an improvement is required to the theoretical calculations and provide valuable input that will allow their refinements. The data illustrate the potential of the magnetic spectrometers setup in Hall C towards the study the $\Delta(1232)$ resonance. These first reported results will be followed by a series of measurements in Hall C, that will expand the studies of the $\Delta(1232)$ resonance offering a high precision insight within a wide kinematic range from low to high momentum transfers.

43. Multi-Head Attention Residual Unfolded Network for Model-Based Pansharpening

Abstract: The objective of pansharpening and hypersharpening is to accurately combine a high-resolution panchromatic (PAN) image with a low-resolution multispectral (MS) or hyperspectral (HS) image, respectively. Unfolding fusion methods integrate the powerful representation capabilities of deep learning with the robustness of model-based approaches. These techniques involve unrolling the steps of the optimization scheme derived from the minimization of an energy into a deep learning framework, resulting in efficient and highly interpretable architectures. In this paper, we propose a model-based deep unfolded method for satellite image fusion. Our approach is based on a variational formulation that incorporates the classic observation model for MS/HS data, a high-frequency injection constraint based on the PAN image, and an arbitrary convex prior. For the unfolding stage, we introduce upsampling and downsampling layers that use geometric information encoded in the PAN image through residual networks. The backbone of our method is a multi-head attention residual network (MARNet), which replaces the proximity operator in the optimization scheme and combines multiple head attentions with residual learning to exploit image self-similarities via nonlocal operators defined in terms of patches. Additionally, we incorporate a post-processing module based on the MARNet architecture to further enhance the quality of the fused images. Experimental results on PRISMA, Quickbird, and WorldView2 datasets demonstrate the superior performance of our method and its ability to generalize across different sensor configurations and varying spatial and spectral resolutions. 44. DTRAN: A Special Use Case of RAN Optimization using Digital Twin

Abstract: The emergence of beyond 5G (B5G) and 6G networks underscores the critical role of advanced computer-aided tools, such as network digital twins (DTs), in fostering autonomous networks and ubiquitous intelligence. Existing solutions in the DT domain primarily aim to model and automate specific tasks within the network lifecycle, which lack flexibility and adaptability for fully autonomous design and management. Unlike the existing DT approaches, we propose RAN optimization using the Digital Twin (DTRAN) framework that follows a holistic approach from core to edge networks. The proposed DTRAN framework enables real-time data management and communication with the physical network, which provides a more accurate and detailed digital replica than the existing approaches. We outline the main building blocks of the DTRAN and describe the details of our specific use case, which is RAN configuration optimization, to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed framework for a real-world scenario.

46. A millimeter rebrightening in GRB 210702A

Abstract: We present X-ray to radio frequency observations of the bright long gamma-ray burst GRB 210702A. Our ALMA 97.5 GHz observations show a significant rebrightening by a factor of ~2 beginning at 8.2 days post-burst and rising to peak brightness at 18.1 days before declining again. This is the first such rebrightening seen in a millimeter afterglow light curve. A standard forward shock model in a stellar wind circumburst medium can explain most of our X-ray, optical and millimeter observations prior to the rebrightening, but significantly over-predicts the self-absorbed radio emission, and cannot explain the millimeter rebrightening. We investigate possible explanations for the millimeter rebrightening and find that energy injection or a reverse shock from a late-time shell collision are plausible causes. Similar to other bursts, our radio data may require alternative scenarios such as a thermal electron population or a structured jet to explain the data. Our observations demonstrate that millimeter light curves can exhibit some of the rich features more commonly seen in optical and X-ray afterglow light curves, motivating further millimeter wavelength studies of GRB afterglows., Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

47. Exploring Latent Space for Generating Peptide Analogs Using Protein Language Models

Abstract: Generating peptides with desired properties is crucial for drug discovery and biotechnology. Traditional sequence-based and structure-based methods often require extensive datasets, which limits their effectiveness. In this study, we proposed a novel method that utilized autoencoder shaped models to explore the protein embedding space, and generate novel peptide analogs by leveraging protein language models. The proposed method requires only a single sequence of interest, avoiding the need for large datasets. Our results show significant improvements over baseline models in similarity indicators of peptide structures, descriptors and bioactivities. The proposed method validated through Molecular Dynamics simulations on TIGIT inhibitors, demonstrates that our method produces peptide analogs with similar yet distinct properties, highlighting its potential to enhance peptide screening processes.

Abstract: We present our numerical simulation approach for the End-to-End (E2E) model applied to various astronomical spectrographs, such as SOXS (ESO-NTT), CUBES (ESO-VLT), and ANDES (ESO-ELT), covering multiple wavelength regions. The E2E model aim at simulating the expected astronomical observations starting from the radiation of the scientific sources (or calibration sources) up to the raw-frame data produced by the detectors. Abstract: SOXS (Son Of X-Shooter) will be the new medium-resolution (R 4500 for 1 slit), high-efficiency, wide-band spectrograph for the ESO NTT at La Silla Observatory, Chile. It will be dedicated to the follow-up of any kind of transient events, ensuring fast time, high efficiency, and availability. It consists of a central structure (common path) that supports two spectrographs optimized for the UV-Visible and a Near-Infrared range. Attached to the common path is the Acquisition and Guiding Camera system (AC), equipped with a filter wheel that can provide science-grade imaging and moderate high-speed photometry. The AC Unit was integrated and aligned during the summer months of 2022 and has since been mounted in the NTTs telescope simulator. Abstract: SOXS (Son Of X-Shooter) is the new single object spectrograph for the ESO New Technology Telescope (NTT) at the La Silla Observatory, able to cover simultaneously both the UV-VIS and NIR bands (350-2000 nm). The instrument is currently in the integration and test phase, approaching the Preliminary Acceptance in Europe (PAE) before shipment to Chile for commissioning. After the assembly and preliminary test of the control electronics at INAF - Astronomical Observatory of Capodimonte (Napoli), the two main control cabinets of SOXS are now hosted in Padova, connected to the real hardware. This contribution describes the final electronic cabinets layout, the control strategy and the different integration phases, waiting for the Preliminary Acceptance in Europe and the installation of the instrument in Chile.
