An analysis is presented on Samuel Richardson's novel 'Pamela', in which a young servant successfully reforms her master. The events in the novel are interpreted as allegories for political changes occurring when the work was written, emphasizing balance of power between citizenry and government.

Dionysius Kao's 'Short Description of the Vast Empire of China' is an attractive candidate as a possible source for Jonathan Swift's reference to 'trampling on the crucifix' in 'Gulliver's Travels.' At least eight other sources have recently been proposed, and Swift may have drawn on more than one. However, Kao's account conforms closely with Swift's text in using the phrase 'trampling on the crucifix,' drawing an ironic distinction between Christians and Hollanders and implying that the Dutch disavowed Christianity for trade with the Japanese.

Samuel Richardson's letter to Miss Grainger as published by The Rambler is analyzed. The letter criticized the brazen behavior of young women in public places. The printed letter has been found to be the raw draft with some passages taken verbatim and rearranged.

It is believed that Samuel Richardson did not regard 'Aesop Unveil'd' as 'worthy of Notice.' The first one hundred fables in the collection are word-for-word the same as those found in Aesop Naturaliz'd and Exposed to the Public View in his Own Shape and Dress. Richardson's known practice of fabricating books for the marketplace is also discussed.
