We report on the first multi-year km-scale global coupled simulations using ECMWF's Integrated Forecasting System (IFS) coupled to both the NEMO and FESOM ocean-sea ice models, as part of the Horizon 2020 Next Generation Earth Modelling Systems (nextGEMS) project. We focus mainly on the two unprecedented IFS-FESOM coupled setups, with an atmospheric resolution of 2.8 km and 4.4 km, respectively, and the same spatially varying ocean resolution that reaches locally below 5 km grid-spacing. This is enabled by a refactored ocean model code that allows for more efficient coupled simulations with IFS in a single-executable setup, employing hybrid parallelisation with MPI and OpenMP. A number of shortcomings in the original NWP-focussed model configurations were identified and mitigated over several cycles collaboratively by the modelling centres, academia, and the wider nextGEMS community. The main improvements are (i) better conservation properties of the coupled model system in terms of water and energy balance, which benefit also ECMWF's operational 9 km IFS-NEMO model, (ii) a realistic top-of-the-atmosphere (TOA) radiation balance throughout the year, (iii) improved intense precipitation characteristics, and (iv) eddy-resolving features in large parts of the mid- and high-latitude oceans (finer than 5 km grid-spacing) to resolve mesoscale eddies and sea ice leads. New developments made at ECMWF for a better representation of snow and land use, including a dedicated scheme for urban areas, were also tested on multi-year timescales. We provide first examples of significant advances in the realism and thus opportunities of these km-scale simulations, such as a clear imprint of resolved Arctic sea ice leads on atmospheric temperature, impacts of km-scale urban areas on the diurnal temperature cycle in cities, and better propagation and symmetry characteristics of the Madden-Julian Oscillation. The downward surface longwave flux (DSLF) plays a relevant role in the Earth's surface radiative budget, which is crucial to monitor, understand and model the impact of changes at local and global scales on surface temperature and surface conditions. This study focuses on the evaluation and intercomparison of four DSLF products: (a) a recently developed all‐weather DSLF product based on the multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) algorithm driven by satellite cloud information from the Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) and ERA5 reanalysis screen variables; (b) the Satellite Application Facility on Land Surface Analysis (LSA SAF); (c) CERES Synoptic top‐of‐atmosphere and surface fluxes and clouds (CERES‐SYN1deg) and (d) ERA5 reanalysis. The study covers the period 2005–2021 and the MSG region focusing on monthly means. The evaluation performed against 48 ground stations from the Baseline Surface Radiation Network (BSRN) and FLUXNET2015 networks showed that the MARS product outperforms the remaining products, particularly the LSA SAF, while ERA5 and CERES show similar performance metrics. The fours products are intercompared in terms of their mean spatial variability and temporal mean annual cycles and inter‐annual variability in four selected regions, showing a high level of agreement, particularly between MARS, ERA5 and CERES. Our results highlight the clear added value of MARS with respect to LSA SAF, while providing higher spatial resolution (0.05°), constrained by satellite cloud information, when compared with ERA5 (0.25°) or CERES (1°). Plain Language Summary: Radiation that reaches the Earth's surface is fundamental for our understanding of the Earth's energy balance. In this work, we use a complex mathematical method together with data from weather satellites and ground‐based instruments to estimate the heat radiation component. To evaluate our results, we perform a comparison with those from various existing methods, including the one used by the Portuguese meteorological service. Our method generally outperforms the already existing techniques, with small errors as compared to surface measurements, demonstrating the added value of this new approach in improving our understanding of Earth's energy budget. Despite recent advances in land surfacemodeling and remote sensing, estimates of the global water budget are still fairly uncertain. This study aims to evaluate the water budget of the Amazon basin based on several state-ofthe- art land surface model (LSM) outputs. Water budget variables (terrestrial water storage TWS, evapotranspiration ET, surface runoff R, and base flow B) are evaluated at the basin scale using both remote sensing and in situ data. Meteorological forcings at a 3-hourly time step and 18 spatial resolution were used to run 14 LSMs. Precipitation datasets that have been rescaled to matchmonthly Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) andGlobal Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC) datasets and the daily Hydrologie du Bassin de l'Amazone (HYBAM) dataset were used to perform three experiments. The Hydrological Modeling and Analysis Platform (HyMAP) river routing scheme was forced with R and B and simulated discharges are compared against observations at 165 gauges. Simulated ET and TWS are compared against FLUXNET and MOD16A2 evapotranspiration datasets andGravity Recovery and ClimateExperiment (GRACE)TWSestimates in two subcatchments of main tributaries (Madeira and Negro Rivers).At the basin scale, simulated ET ranges from 2.39 to 3.26mmday-1 and a low spatial correlation between ET and precipitation indicates that evapotranspiration does not depend on water availability over most of the basin. Results also show that other simulated water budget components vary significantly as a function of both the LSM and precipitation dataset, but simulated TWS generally agrees with GRACE estimates at the basin scale. The best water budget simulations resulted from experiments using HYBAM, mostly explained by a denser rainfall gauge network and the rescaling at a finer temporal scale.

In weather forecasting and climate monitoring, daily maximum and minimum air temperatures (TMAX and TMIN) are fundamental for operational and research purposes, from early warning of extreme events to climate change studies. This study provides an integrated evaluation of TMAX and TMIN from two European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) products: ERA5 reanalysis (1980–2019) and operational weather forecasts (2017–2021). Both products are evaluated using in situ observations from the Global Historical Climatology Network (GHCN). While the analyses span globally, emphasis is given to four key regions: Europe, East and West United States, and Australia. Results reveal a general underestimation of TMAX and overestimation of TMIN in both operational forecasts and ERA5, highlighting the limitation of the ECMWF model in estimating the amplitude of the diurnal cycle of air temperature. ERA5′s accuracy has improved over the past decade, due to enhanced constrain of land–atmosphere analysis streaming from more and higher-quality satellite data. Furthermore, ERA5 outperforms one-day-ahead weather forecasts, indicating that non-real-time dependent studies should rely on ERA5 instead of real-time operational forecasts. This study underscores the importance of ongoing research in model and data assimilation, considering the relevance of daily temperature extremes forecasting and reanalysis for operational meteorology and climate monitoring. Summer heatwaves are becoming increasingly dangerous over Europe, and their close monitoring is essential for human activities. Typically, they are monitored using 2 m temperature from meteorological weather stations or reanalysis datasets. In this study, the 2022 extremely warm summer over Europe is analyze ' using satellite land surface temperature (LST), specifically the LSA-SAF All-Sky LST product (available from 2004 onwards). Since climate applications of LST are still poorly explored, heatwave diagnostics derived from satellite observations are compared with those derived using ERA5/ERA5-Land reanalysis data. Results highlight the exceptiorility of 2022 in different metrics such as mean LST anomaly, area under extreme heat conditions, number of hot days and the Heatwave Magnitude Index. In all metrics, 2022 ranked first when compared with the remaining years. Compared to 2018 (next in all rankings), 2022 exceeded its LST anomaly by 0.7 °C and each pixel had on average seven more hot days. Satellite LST complements reanalysis diagnostics, as higher LST anomalies occur over areas under severe drought, indicating a higher control and amplification of the heatwave by surface processes and vegetation stress. Land Surface Temperature (LST) and Surface Net Radiation (SNR) are vital inputs for many land surface and hydrological models. However, current remote sensing datasets of these variables come mostly at coarse resolutions. Although high-resolution LST and SNR retrievals are available, they have large gaps due to cloud-cover that hinder their use as input in models. Here, we present a downscaled and continuous daily LST and SNR product across Europe for 2018-2019. The LST product is based on all-sky LST retrievals from the Spinning Enhanced Visible and InfraRed Imager (SEVIRI) onboard the geostationary Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) satellite, and clear-sky LST retrievals from the Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer (SLSTR) onboard the polar-orbiting Sentinel 3 satellites. The product combines the medium spatial (approx. 5-7 km) but high temporal (30 minute) resolution, gap-free data from MSG, with the low temporal (2-3 days) but high spatial (1 km) resolution of the Sentinel 3 LST retrievals. The resulting 1 km and daily LST dataset is based on an hourly merging of both datasets through bias-correction and Kalman Filter assimilation. Longwave outgoing radiation is computed from the merged LST product in combination with MSG-based emissivity data. Shortwave outgoing radiation is computed from the incoming shortwave radiation from MSG and downscaled albedos using 1 km PROBA-V data. MSG incoming shortwave and longwave radiation and the outgoing radiation components at 1 km spatial resolution are used together to compute the final daily SNR dataset in a consistent manner. Validation results indicate an improvement of the root mean squared error by ca. 8% with a substantial increase in spatial detail compared to the original MSG product. The resulting pan-European LST and SNR dataset can be used for hydrological modelling and as input to models dedicated to estimating evaporation and surface turbulent heat fluxes and will be regularly updated in the future.
