African penguins (Spheniscus demersus) are pursuit-diving seabirds endemic to the coast of southern Africa. In this study, we investigate the presence of seashells and anthropogenic debris (e.g. plastic, glass, nylon) in the stomach contents of adult African penguins, as determined from sampling of live penguins through the water off-loading technique (n = 4,793) and from post-mortem examination of penguin carcases (n = 159). Seashells were present in stomach contents sampled from 106 live (2.2%) and three dead (1.9%) penguins. Seashells originated from a variety of intertidal and subtidal organisms including molluscs, barnacles and bryozoans, and the eroded condition of the shell fragments suggests that they were picked up from shell deposits on the beach or in the surf zone. Seashell ingestion appears to be more frequent in the months of peak egg laying. A subset of stomach samples from known-sex individuals revealed that seashells were only present in the stomachs of adult females. In post-mortem examination, the presence of seashells in the stomach was accompanied by anatomical evidence that egg laying was imminent or had recently occurred. Anthropogenic debris was found in one (0.6%) and eight (0.2%) stomach content samples obtained from dead and live penguins, respectively. In some cases, the ingestion of anthropogenic debris co-occurred with that of seashells, and their size and shape were similar. Our findings demonstrate that adult female African penguins occasionally ingest seashells, possibly as a calcium supplementation strategy, and raise concern that in doing so they may also accidentally ingest anthropogenic debris. Understanding the functional relationship between marine predators and their prey is vital to inform ecosystem‐based management. However, collecting concurrent data on predator behaviour and their prey at relevant scales is challenging. Moreover, opportunities to study these relationships in the absence of industrial fishing are extremely rare.We took advantage of an experimental fisheries closure to study how local prey abundance influences foraging success and chick condition of Endangered African penguins Spheniscus demersus in the Benguela ecosystem.We tracked 75 chick‐provisioning penguins with GPS–time–depth devices, measured body condition of 569 chicks, quantified the diet of 83 breeding penguins and conducted 12 forage fish hydro‐acoustic surveys within a 20 km radius of Robben Island, South Africa, over three years (2011–2013). Commercial fishing for the penguins' main prey, sardine Sardinops sagax and anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus, was prohibited within this 20 km radius during the study period.Local forage fish abundance explained 60% of the variation in time spent diving for 14 penguins at sea within 2 days of a hydro‐acoustic survey. Penguin foraging effort (time spent diving, number of wiggles per trip, number of foraging dives and the maximum distance travelled) increased and offspring body condition decreased as forage fish abundance declined. In addition, quantile regression revealed that variation in foraging effort increased as prey abundance around the colony declined.Policy implications. Our results demonstrate that local forage fish abundance influences seabird foraging and offspring fitness. They also highlight the potential for offspring condition and the mean–variance relationship in foraging behaviour to act as leading indicators of poor prey abundance. By rapidly indicating periods where forage resources are scarce, these metrics could help limit seabird fisheries competition and aid the implementation of dynamic ocean management. Knowledge regarding interactions between predators and their prey is fundamental for understanding underlying links between climate change and ecosystem responses, including predator demographics, in the Southern Ocean. This study reports data on reproductive performance, total population size and diet composition for macaroni and chinstrap penguins breeding at Nyrøysa on Bouvetøya during the summers of 1996–97, 1998–99, 2000–01 and 2007–08. The breeding populations of these two species at Nyrøysa decreased significantly over the study period, with an 80% decline for chinstraps and a 50% decline for macaroni penguins, despite relatively high levels of chick production. During this period macaroni penguins at this site ate a diverse diet, dominated by myctophid fish and two krill species, whereas chinstrap penguins were Antarctic krill specialists. The population changes are probably primarily due to the expanding Antarctic fur seal population, and also to landslides that are the result of increased melting on the island which have destroyed penguin breeding sites. Additional impacts from global warming of the ocean might also be playing a role and could exacerbate the decline in these penguin populations if krill and other prey are negatively impacted in the future in this region. The Kelp GullLarus dominicanustypically lays clutches of 1–3 eggs, but larger clutches have been recorded occasionally. We report that four- and five-egg clutches comprise 0.3% of clutches among the southern African subspeciesL. d. vetula, with a higher incidence in edges of the species’ breeding range (southern Namibia and the south-eastern Cape) than in the south-western Cape. Supernormal clutches tend to be clustered in specific years and are associated with low hatching success in some but not all cases. Further observations are needed to assess whether such clutches result from female–female pairs, egg dumping, or unusually large clutches laid by a single female. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article reports on avian disease outbreaks at sub-Antarctic Marion Island, one of South Africa's Prince Edward Islands in the south-west Indian Ocean, and considers what procedures should be adopted to reduce the risks of further outbreaks at the island group. Several species of King Penguins Aptenodytes patagonicus and an estimated 5-10 thousand Macaroni Penguins Eudyptes chrysolophus were reportedly killed by unknown diseases in the island during 1992 and 1993. An outbreak of avian cholera Pasteurella multocida was also reported in the same island during November 2004. Procedures for preventing these outbreaks have been developed in the islands and in Antarctica.

Trends in numbers of Cape gannets (Morus capensis), 1956/57–2005/06, with a consideration of the influence of food and other factors – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 64, 169–177. Cape gannets (Morus capensis) breed at six colonies in Namibia and South Africa. Population size averaged about 250 000 pairs over the period 1956/1957–1968/1969 and about 150 000 pairs from 1978/1979 to 2005/2006. Over the whole 50-y period, numbers at the three Namibian colonies fell by 85–98%, with greater proportional decreases in the south. There were increases at two South African colonies between 1956/1957 and 2005/2006. The colony at Lambert's Bay increased between 1956/1957 and 2003/2004, but attacks by Cape fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus) on birds at nests caused abandonment of the entire colony in 2005/2006. Long-term changes at colonies are thought to be largely attributable to an altered abundance and distribution of prey, especially sardine (Sardinops sagax) and anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus). In both Namibia and South Africa, the numbers of Cape gannets breeding were significantly related to the biomass of epipelagic fish prey. Over the 50-y period, there was also a marked similarity in the proportions of gannets and epipelagic fish in the Benguela system, which were present in Namibia and South Africa. In the 2000s, there was an eastward shift in the distribution of sardine off South Africa and a large increase in the number of gannets breeding at South Africa's easternmost colony. When sardine were scarce off South Africa, gannets fed on anchovy, but off Namibia anchovy only temporarily and partially replaced sardine. The bulk ore carrier Apollo Seasank near Dassen Island, South Africa, on 20 June 1994 during a period of winter storms. Approximately 10 000 African (Jackass) Penguins Spheniscus demersuswere oiled, collected and transported to the SANCCOB rescue centre; 5213 were released after cleaning, 4076 with flipper bands. We believe that most of the penguins oiled during this incident reached an island or the mainland alive, and that there was no mass mortality in the wild at the time of the oil spill. Birds from all parts of the breeding range were oiled, but most were from Robben and Dassen Islands. The overwhelming majority of released birds made the transition from the rescue centre to the wild successfully; 2652 had been resighted at breeding colonies within two years of their release; the cumulative number of birds was increasing steadily and an asymptote had not been reached by August 1996. There was a wide dispersal of released penguins, with recoveries and resightings over 1800 km of coastline between Algoa Bay and Walvis Bay. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
