Background: Pain catastrophization (PC) is related to motor control changes in individuals with nonspecific chronic low back pain (NSCLBP). However, differences in dynamic balance control based on the level of PC still remain unclear in these individuals. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the dynamic balance control between healthy controls and individuals with NSCLBP with high and low PC. Methods: Forty individuals with NSCLBP and 20 healthy participants were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Individuals with NSCLBP were classified into two groups of high and low PC. Dynamic balance control was assessed using the Modified Star Excursion Balance Test (MSEBT), Five-Time Sit-to-Stand Test (FTSST), and Timed Up and Go Test (TUGT). Results: Statistical analyses showed that mean values of reach distances in the anterior, posteromedial, and posterolateral directions of the MSEBT were significantly lower in individuals with NSCLBP with high PC compared to low PC (p =.04, p =.01, and p =.04, respectively) and healthy controls (p <.001, p =.001, and p =.006, respectively). In addition, for both the FTSS and TUG tests, the mean time was significantly greater in individuals with NSCLBP with high PC compared to low PC (p <.001 and p =.004, respectively) and healthy controls (p <.001). Conclusions: Our results showed poor dynamic balance control in individuals with NSCLBP with high PC. This suggests that PC could contribute to the impaired dynamic balance control in individuals with NSCLBP. Combining balance exercises and cognitive-behavioral treatments targeting PC may be useful for the improvement of dynamic balance control in individuals with NSCLBP with high PC. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of strabismus surgery on dynamic balance by using computerized dynamic posturography in children with strabismus. Methods: This study was designed as a prospective observational study. Hearing tests and complete ophthalmological examinations were performed for all subjects. Patients with moderate and severe amblyopia, hearing loss at any level, and/or any suspicion of balance impairment were excluded from the study. Postural stability evaluation was performed by computerized dynamic posturography including sensory organization test, adaptation test, and rhythmic weight shift test. All tests were applied preoperatively and in the postoperative 1st and 3rd months, respectively. Results: Fifteen female and twelve male pre-adolescents aged between 7 and 12 (9.67 ± 1.62 years) were included in the current study. In the sensory organization test, the preoperative visual ratio percentages (73.19 ± 14.95%) improved statistically significantly at the postoperative 1st and 3rd months (78.59 ± 16.21% and 81.44 ± 14.18; p =.026, p =.021, respectively). The preoperative toes up (110.66 ± 33,48) and toes down (81.46 ± 28.36) adaptation tests improved statistically significantly in the postoperative 3rd month (88.74 ± 20.94 and 63.36 ± 16.03; p <.001, p =.001, respectively). In the Rhythmic Weight Shift test, the postoperative 3rd-month directional control (forward-backward) value (74.25 ± 11.51%) was statistically significantly higher compared to the preoperative directional control (forward-backward) value (67.76 ± 11.38%) (p =.011). To compare reach distances between the YBT-LQ and SEBT using the correct protocols as outlined by the developers. This will provide an accurate insight on the actual magnitude differences in reach distance between the movement screen tests and will safeguard practitioners on the subsequent use of these outcomes to inform clinical decision making. Observational. Laboratory. Participants included sixteen healthy female subjects from the university and amateur sports teams. Reach distances in the anterior direction (ANT), posterior medial (PM) and posterior lateral (PL) between participants on the YBT-LQ and SEBT. The principal findings highlighted that a statistically significantly greater reach distance on the left and right side for the YBT-LQ compared to the SEBT in the ANT, PM, and PL directions (p < 0.0005). The results of this study suggest that the YBT-LQ and SEBT are not comparable tests due to the differences in reach distance and methodological differences. Therefore, previous, and future research using the YBT-LQ and SEBT cannot be used interchangeably. The gluteus medius (GM) plays an important role in stabilizing the knee and preventing injury. This study aimed to determine the immediate effects of weight-bearing gluteus medius exercises on lower-extremity muscle function and dynamic knee valgus. Eighteen healthy adults (nine each of both sexes) performed three types of weight-bearing gluteus medius exercises (standing, mini-squat, and dead-lift), and a range of kinematic variables were tested in triplicate. Weight-supporting GM exercise consisted of three sets of 15 repetitions of the lateral band walk. The Y-balance test (YBT) and vertical single-leg jump were used as indicators of muscle function in the lower limbs. We used a video analyzer to film the dynamic knee valgus and performed a YBT for the supporting leg and landing leg following a jump. The height of the single-leg vertical jump and the posterolateral and total YBT scores were significantly higher in the dead-lift posture than in the standing and mini-squat postures. Motion analysis of the dead-lifts revealed high hip flexion on the supporting leg in the posterolateral direction, as determined by the YBT, with low levels of internal hip rotation on the landing leg during the one-leg vertical jump. As an immediate effect of gluteus medius exercise, the dead-lift posture facilitated single-leg vertical jump, posterolateral balance, and reduced dynamic knee valgus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The "SEBT group," which includes the Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT), its modified version (mSEBT), and the Lower Quarter Y-Balance Test (YBT-LQ), is used to assess the limits of stability. Interestingly, the testing protocol allows users a considerable degree of flexibility, which can affect the obtained results. Therefore, the objective of this systematic review was to analyze the impact of different protocol variants within the "SEBT group" on outcomes. Methods: Data were acquired by searching 4 databases (MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, Wiley, Springer Link) focusing on studies published in English in peer-reviewed journals, empirical in nature, conducted on healthy individuals, and examining the effects of various protocol variants on test outcomes. Study quality was assessed with the NHLBI quality assessment tool for pre-post studies with no control group. Results: The calculation method based on the maximum repetition yields statistically significantly higher results compared to other calculation methods. Allowing unrestricted arm movements during the test results in statistically significantly higher scores compared to the procedure that restricts arm movements. The impact of a warm-up, wearing footwear during testing, and using a dedicated kit remains ambiguous. To obtain reliable results, 4-6 familiarization trials are necessary, though fewer may suffice for athletes experienced in performing the test. Conclusion: This systematic review highlights the significant impact of the calculation method and arm movement restrictions on the outcomes of the "SEBT group." The effects of wearing footwear during testing, warm-up, and using a dedicated test kit remain unclear. The required number of familiarization repetitions may varies depending on biological maturity level of the person being tested. Background: This scoping review summarizes the tasks and outcomes in dynamic and functional balance assessments of individuals with chronic ankle instability, focusing on the physiological and biomechanical characteristics. Method: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and MEDLINE databases in September 2023 and revised in April 2024. Studies evaluating dynamic and functional balance in chronic ankle instability using clinical tests, as well as biomechanical and physiological outcomes, were included. Results: Out of 536 publications, 31 met the screening criteria. A history of ankle sprain was the main focus of the inclusion criteria (28 articles, 90%). The star excursion balance test, emphasizing maximum reach distance, was the most common quantitative task (12 articles, 66%). Physiological data mainly came from electromyography studies (7 articles, 23%), while biomechanical variables were often assessed through center of pressure studies using force plates (17 articles, 55%). Conclusions: The preferred quantitative clinical assessment was the star excursion balance test, focusing on normalized reach outcomes. Qualitative functional balance assessments emphasize landing activities and center of pressure displacement. Electromyography is commonly used to analyze the tibialis anterior and peroneus longus muscles. This study examined the differences between children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and neurotypically developing (NTD) in terms of balance, postural control, and motor skills. It also examined which motor skills are most affected and whether scores on different assessment tests in ASD children are correlated. A cross‐sectional observational study with two research groups was conducted. Timed up and go test (TUG), short form of Bruininks‐Oseretsky test of Motor Proficiency version 2 (SFBOT‐2), and pediatric balance scale (PBS) were used. A total of 100 participants 50 with ASD and 50 with NTD engaged in the research. Statistically significant differences were obtained between control group and ASD group in TUG test and in SFBOT‐2 standard score and total score (p‐value = <0.01). A statistically significant difference (p‐value = <0.01) was seen between ASD group's and control group's PBS scores. Poor correlation was noted between TUG and SFBOT‐2, as well as between PBS and TUG. A moderate correlation was also found between SFBOT‐2 and PBS. Children with ASD present difficulties in motor skills and in static and dynamic balance compared to children with NTD. Differences were observed in the motor skills of strength followed by manual dexterity, running speed and agility, fine motor precision, fine motor integration, and balance. The PBS item that showed the greatest difference between the ASD group and control group was maintaining monopodial support with hands on hips. Finally, poor to moderate correlations were obtained between the different tests with statistically significant differences. Background and Objectives: There is a lack of studies examining balance problems and Achilles tendon thickness in prediabetes despite their common occurrence in diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study was to evaluate Achilles tendon size and static and dynamic balance, as well as the role of the Achilles tendon in balance, in prediabetic patients. Materials and Methods: A total of 96 participants were divided into three groups: (1) the control group, consisting of participants without diabetes mellitus; (2) the prediabetes group; and (3) the diabetes mellitus group. Ultrasonographic measurements of Achilles tendon sizes (thickness, width and area) were performed. Dynamic balance was assessed using the Berg Balance Scale, and static balance (the Fall and Stability Indices) was assessed using a Tetrax device. The Self-Leeds Assessment of Neuropathic Symptoms and Signs was utilized to identify neuropathic pain. Results: In the prediabetes group, the median dynamic balance scores [54.0 (51.0–56.0)] were lower than those of the control group [55.0 (54.0–56.0)] but higher than those of the patients with diabetes mellitus [52.50 (49.0–54.25)]; however, this difference did not reach statistical significance. The ultrasonographic measurements of the Achilles tendon size were similar among the three groups. On the other hand, in the prediabetes group, a positive correlation was observed between the bilateral Achilles tendon anterior–posterior thickness and Fall Index score (p = 0.045), while a negative correlation was found between the left Achilles tendon anterior–posterior thickness and the Berg Balance Score (p = 0.045). Conclusions: In prediabetes, neither Achilles tendon size nor static or dynamic balance appears to be significantly affected. Introduction: The first signs of deteriorated balance impairment begin during middle age. Early intervention could delay the fall risk in older populations; hence, addressing balance deficits during this age is crucial. The authors aimed to determine the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) combined with balance training (BT) on the improvement of static and dynamic balance in a middle-aged population, along with the participants' safety and satisfaction. Methods: Participants (n = 28) were randomized into two groups: active tDCS (active tDCS + BT) and sham tDCS (sham tDCS + BT). Both groups received the intervention thrice a week for 6 weeks. Dynamic and static balance were assessed by sway rate changes with eyes open and closed, and the functional reach test and a postintervention survey were conducted to assess participants' safety and satisfaction. Results: The active tDCS group showed significantly greater static and dynamic balance improvements in sway scores. The surveys demonstrated the safety of the program and satisfaction of 80% of the participants with the combined intervention. Conclusion: tDCS could be used in a middle-aged population as part of regular BT to improve balance and minimize the risk of balance deficits in older populations while ensuring patient safety and satisfaction. This research investigates the combined effects of a tailored psychomotor development training and Unified Sports football program on psychomotor abilities and social attributes among Special Olympics athletes with intellectual disabilities aged 16-18 in Romania. The study aims to assess the impact of the integrated psychomotor and Unified Football training program on the psychomotor abilities of youth Special Olympics athletes with intellectual disabilities, evaluate the influence of the intervention on their social attributes, and examine the relationship between psychomotor abilities and social attributes among participants. The findings indicate significant improvements in psychomotor skills, including Static Balance (t = -8.042, p < 0.001), Identified Stimuli (t = -7.000, p < 0.001), and Friendship Activity Scale scores (t = -8.990, p < 0.001), reflecting substantial enhancements from initial to final testing. Moreover, Pulse Processing Speed showed a significant improvement (t = -2.299, p = 0.042). However, while Dynamic Balance exhibited a negative t-value (t = -2.021), the p-value of 0.068 indicates a marginally significant improvement. These results suggest notable advancements in psychomotor skills and social interaction among Special Olympics athletes, underscoring the effectiveness of the integrated training program. Vibration signal processing is the key to the dynamic balance of micro-motor rotors. Aiming at the extraction accuracy of the amplitude and phase of the unbalanced vibration signal of micro-motor rotors, a feature extraction method based on variational mode decomposition is developed. Taking the convergence of sample entropy as the optimization objective, the modal decomposition number K and penalty factor a are optimized by sparrow search algorithm, and the threshold of reference permutation entropy of unbalanced signal is used as a filter to select the required modal components. After VMD decomposition and reconstruction of effective signals, the rotor's vibration signal in working frequency can be obtained. In the simulation case study, the proposed method is applied in several sets of generated low SNR signals, and the extraction results are compared with those obtained by the least squares method. The experimental study is conducted to extract the unbalanced signal of micro-motor rotors for dynamic balance. The residual unbalance of the balanced rotor is relatively small, with a repeated accuracy of less than 2 mg and a measurement accuracy of G0.4. The core musculature gets activated by feed forward fashion during the movement of upper extremity, as in kinetic chain of throwing, shoulder muscle contributes larger dynamic balance and also in reversed manner. Aim of the current study was to associate the strength of core and the dynamic balance of throwing hand in cricket fast bowlers. 72 subjects were initially screened for eligibility, and ultimately, 55 male participants from various cricket coaching academies, aged 19.1 ± 2.6 on average, were included. The mean BMI of the participants was 20.9. The assessments included the Modified Upper Quarter Y Balance Test (mUQYBT)- Medial (M), Supero-Lateral reach (SL), Infero-Lateral reach(IL) along with Core measures- 600 Abdominal flexion test (600 AFT), right side plank test (RSP), Left side plank test (LSP), Beiring Sorenson test (BST), all of which were successfully completed. Based on our findings, we observed a mild positive correlation between the values of mUQYBT and core measures. We employed Pearson's coefficient to evaluate the association, and the R2 values were utilized to quantify the amount of variability. The resulting scores were RSP to SL (r = 0.38, R2 = 0.14), LSP to SL (r = 0.43, R2 = 0.19), LSP to RSP (r = 0.790, R2 = 0.62), BSP to Composite score (r = 0.29, R2 = 0.08), SL to 600 AFT* (r = 0.231, R2 = 0.05) and BMI to IL* (r = −0.107, R2 = 0.01). In conclusion, a positive correlation was exhibited between dynamic balance and core strength in healthy cricket fast bowlers. Background and Objectives: Muscle atrophy caused by chronic ankle instability (CAI) can incur muscle weakness, altered movement patterns, and increased risk of injury. Previous studies have investigated the effects of rehabilitative exercises and neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) on characteristics in CAI individuals, but few studies have examined their effects on foot and ankle muscle morphology. This study aimed to determine the effects of rehabilitative exercises and NMES on muscle morphology and dynamic balance in individuals with CAI. Materials and Methods: Participants with CAI (n = 47) were randomly divided into control (CG), rehabilitative exercise (REG), NMES (NG), and rehabilitative exercise and NMES combined (RNG) groups. The six-week intervention program consisting of rehabilitative exercises and NMES was applied to groups excluding CG. Muscle morphology and dynamic balance were evaluated using a portable wireless diagnostic ultrasound device and dynamic balance tests. For statistical analysis, an effect size with 95% confidence interval was calculated to assess mean differences according to intervention. Results: After six weeks, significant increases in morphology and dynamic balance were observed for all muscles except flexor hallucis longus (p > 0.05) in the intervention groups except for CG. However, no significant changes were observed in the CG (p > 0.05). Introduction: Chronic Ankle Instability (CAI) is an injury that presents persistent instability and “giving way” symptoms. The higher rate of reinjury following an initial Lateral Ankle Sprain (LAS) is associated with the development of CAI, which affects athletic and functional performance. Impairment of musculotendinous receptors following an initial ankle sprain may result in recurrent ankle instability. Some studies have suggested an association between CAI and issues with static and dynamic balance. Comparisons of static balance between recreational badminton and volleyball players and dynamic balance between recreational badminton and volleyball players with CAI are required to provide athletes with the proper balance training exercises. Aim: To analyse the static balance of badminton and volleyball recreational players with CAI using the Balance Error Scoring System (BESS) and a Plantar Pressure Analysis System (PPAS), as well as the dynamic balance of those players using the Y Balance Test (YBT). Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted where recreational players with CAI who play badminton and volleyball were screened using the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT), and 46 participants were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The study was conducted in the indoor and outdoor stadiums of NITTE (Deemed to be University), Mangaluru, Karnataka, India. The study duration was from March 2023 to March 2024. Ethical clearance was obtained from the same university for the study. Following this, static and dynamic balance of each group was assessed using BESS (number of errors), PPAS (sway velocity), and YBT (distance reached by the limb). The static balance between the groups and dynamic balance between the groups were analysed in Jamovi software using independent sample t-test. Results: Following the analysis, static balance between badminton and volleyball recreational players using BESS showed a non significant difference with a p-value of 0.282, while PPAS showed non significant differences with p-values of 0.174 for double leg stance and 0.063 for single leg stance. Similarly, dynamic balance between badminton and volleyball recreational players using YBT showed non significant differences with p-values of 0.467, 0.768, and 0.299 for anterior, posteromedial, and posterolateral directions, respectively. Conclusion: The study concluded that there was no significant difference in static as well as dynamic balance between badminton and volleyball recreational players with CAI. However, it is important to evaluate the static and dynamic balance of recreational players to enhance performance and prevent injuries.

Hip range of motion (ROM) restriction is commonly observed in youth soccer players. This study aimed to investigate the effects of foam rolling training (FRT) and static stretching training (SST) on youth soccer players who have restricted hip ROM. The study included 34 youth soccer players with hip ROM restrictions, who were divided into two groups: FRT (n = 17, 15.9 ± 1.3 years) and SST (n = 17, 15.9 ± 1.7 years). Both groups were diagnosed with hip ROM restriction and enrolled in the study, then performed foam rolling and static stretching programs three times a week for six weeks. The Copenhagen Hip and Groin Outcome Score (HAGOS), and hip ROM, Lower Quarter Y-Balance Test (YBT-LQ), and isokinetic hip strength test were measured before and after intervention. The results showed that both FRT and SST were effective in improving hip function, as measured by HAGOS, and in increasing hip ROM, particularly flexion, abduction and internal rotation (p < 0.05). External rotation was significantly increased only in the SST group (p < 0.05). Both FRT and SST also improved YBT-LQ (p < 0.05). However, the SST group showed higher reach distances than the FRT group in all directions after training (p < 0.05). Both groups improved isokinetic hip strength in flexion and abduction movements, but when compared between groups, the FRT group showed greater improvement in peak torque (p < 0.05). In conclusion, FRT was more effective in reducing symptoms and pain and improving muscle strength, while SST improved hip mobility and dynamic balance more broadly. These results suggest that including both foam rolling and static stretching in a training program to optimize hip ROM and function in youth soccer players may be effective.

OBJECTIVE: Clinically, chronic ankle instability has symptoms such as muscle weakness, loss of control and repeated sprains. These symptoms can be effectively improved by means of exercise intervention. Here, we conducted a comprehensive quantitative evaluation of the effects of exercise intervention on chronic ankle instability at home and abroad through Meta-analysis, and examined the moderating effects of different exercise interventions on chronic ankle instability in terms of effect size and exercise dose. METHODS: CNKI, WanFang, Web of Science, EBSCO-SPORTD and PubMed were searched and screened for relevant literature regarding randomized controlled trials of an exercise intervention program against chronic ankle instability. Included literature was analyzed by using Review Manager 5.3 and Stata-SE 15. RESULTS: A total of 52 documents were included with 1 880 patients with chronic ankle instability. Meta-analysis showed that exercise intervention could improve the functional score of patients with chronic ankle instability to a large amount. Neuromuscular control training, a 12-week intervention cycle, and two weekly interventions of > 60 minutes are the best protocol for improving instability symptoms in patients with chronic ankle instability. Exercise intervention could improve the dynamic balance of patients with chronic ankle instability to reach the medium equivalent stress. The best exercise program to improve the dynamic balance ability is a combination of neuromuscular control training and hip strength training, with an exercise dose of 30-60 minutes, two or three times per week, for 8 weeks in total. CONCLUSION: Different exercise forms have a good effect on improving the unstable symptoms and dynamic balance ability of patients with chronic ankle instability, among which neuromuscular control training has a more comprehensive effect on improving chronic ankle instability. Background Given rising youth sport participation, 8 to 10-year-olds increasingly display comparable lower-extremity injury incidence to 11 to 17-year-olds and require effective return to sport criteria. One such criterion which quantifies dynamic stability is the Y-Balance Test (YBT), though it has not been validated in children under age 11. Hypothesis/Purpose The purpose of this study was to examine the performance of 8 to 10-year-old patients on the YBT after lower-extremity injury and determine how these results compare to larger samples of age-grouped athletes within the validated 11 to 17-year-old range. It was hypothesized that 8 to 10-year-olds would display different normalized YBT distances compared to 11 to 17-year-olds. Study Design Cross-sectional Study. Methods Patients (N=1093) aged 8 to 17 who presented to a pediatric sports medicine practice with a lower-extremity injury and completed the YBT between December 2015-May 2021 were included. Anterior, posteromedial, and posterolateral YBT scores were collected at return-to-sport for affected and unaffected limbs. Scores were normalized to limb length, and composite scores were created. Between-limb differences were calculated in groups of ages 8-10, 11-12, 13-14, and 15-17. Groups were also evaluated for differences by sex. Results A rise in performance was observed in unaffected limb anterior reach from ages 8 to 10 years to 11 to 12 years followed by a subsequent significant decrease at older ages (p<0.001). Affected limb anterior reach differed between the youngest group and two oldest groups (p=0.004). Anterior and composite difference were significantly different between the oldest three groups (p=0.014 anterior; p=0.024 composite). No differences were observed between sexes in 8 to 10-year-olds, though 11 to 12-year-old females reached further during all eight distances. In the older three groups, males generally displayed greater between-limb differences. Conclusion YBT scores, specifically anterior reach, demonstrated inconsistency by age and sex across a large adolescent cohort. Context: The Y Balance Test (YBT) is a simple, reliable, cost-effective screening test. It is used to evaluate dynamic balance as well as to determine the potential risk of injury of the lower limbs. The reliability of YBT has been widely reported in the general population. However, there are no studies evaluating the reliability of YBT use in athletes with intellectual disability (ID). The aim of the study was to examine the reliability of the YBT in runners with ID. Design: A reliability study. Methods: Twelve male runners (short-distance running) with ID (age 25.1 [4.50] y, height 169.1 [4.2] cm, weight 69.5 [5.5] kg, and intelligence quotient 60.8 [2.4]). The YBT was used to measure participants' dynamic balance in the anterior, posteromedial, and posterolateral reach directions. The analysis used the normalized values to the relative length of the lower limbs. A 1-way (trial) repeated-measures (5) analysis of variance for each direction was used. Intraclass correlation coefficient, standard error of measurement, and minimal detectable change were computed to assess the reliability of the YBT between trials. Results: After 6 practice trials, 3 out of 5 consecutive ones achieved results stabilization for all directions and both legs (P <.05). The intraclass correlation coefficient, standard error of measurement, and minimal detectable change values for all trials ranged from.76 to.87, 5% to <7%, and 11% to <15%, respectively. Conclusion: The YBT is a highly reliable tool to measure the dynamic balance of male runners with ID. Therefore, it is recommended to perform 6 practice trials and 3 measurements in these runners. Background and Study Aim. Foot health and physical fitness in children are closely interconnected, playing a vital role in ensuring their overall well-being and performance. This study aims to determine the relationship between flat feet, body balance, and physical performance of junior high school students. Material and Methods. A total of 109 junior high school students from five schools in Surabaya, Indonesia, with ages ranging from 12 to 14 years, participated in this research. Data collection was through the wet footprint test, stork standing balance test, Bass test, Y-agility Test, and Illinois Change of Direction Test. The correlation of flat feet with static and dynamic balance and physical performance in the school environment was analyzed using the non-parametric Spearman Rank statistical test. Results. The results showed significant relationships between foot grade and static balance, dynamic balance, agility, and change of direction. These relationships were indicated by correlation coefficients that showed statistical significance at p < 0.05. Additionally, static and dynamic balance exhibited a negative correlation, while agility and change of direction showed a positive correlation. This suggests that higher foot grades corresponded to longer durations in static and dynamic balance tests and shorter completion times in agility and change of direction tasks. Conclusions. The findings of this study highlight the importance of investigating the relationship between flat feet, body balance, and physical performance among junior high school students. Understanding these correlations is crucial for optimizing the overall well-being and performance of adolescents.

Abstract Pain in the lower back is a major concern in today’s era due to prolonged sitting in two-wheeler riders, mainly due to hamstring tightness. It also creates physical disability and impairment in activities of daily living. The study aimed to compare the efficacy of muscle energy technique (MET) and self-myofascial release (SMFR) using the foam roller on hamstring flexibility, dynamic balance, and physical disability amongst two-wheeler riders with chronic low back pain (LBP). Participants were randomized into two intervention groups, MET and SMFR using the envelope method, with each group having 20 participants. Hamstring flexibility and range of motion for knee extension and the lower back were assessed using the active knee extension test (AKE-L and AKE-R) and sit and reach test (SRT), while the dynamic balance was assessed by the star excursion balance test (SEBT) and physical disability by Roland‐Morris Disability Questionnaire, (RMDQ). Exploring the relationship between different types of balance can help understand early physical development in children. Currently, research is mostly focused on the relationship between different types of balance in the adult population and lacks exploration of the preschool population. The aim of this study explored the relationship between static and dynamic balance in preschool children aged 4 to 5 years. Methods A total of 128 preschool children between the ages of 4 to 5 years were selected. The following tests were conducted as they wore inertial sensors detecting their centers of mass (COM): T1, standing with eyes open; T2, standing with eyes closed; T3, standing with eyes open on foam; T4, standing with eyes closed on foam; and T5, walking on the balance beam. Static balance was measured by the angular velocity modulus (ω −T1–ω −T4) of the shaking COM, as well as the pitch angle (θ −T1–θ −T4) and roll angle (φ −T1–φ −T4) indicators in T1–T4 testing. Abstract Background Hyperlordosis is an excessive inward curvature of the lumbar spine that affects spinal function. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of core stability exercises (CSE), Whole-Body Electromyostimulation (WB-EMS), and CSE Plus on the Lumbar lordosis angle and dynamic balance in sedentary people with hyperlordosis. Methods In a parallel randomized controlled trial study, seventy five untrained male adults with hyperlordosis, recruited from clinics of sports medicine and corrective exercise centers in Tehran, were randomly assigned to four groups: CSE (n = 19), WB-EMS (n = 18), CSE Plus (n = 18), and control Group (CG) (n = 20). The CSE group performed Core stability exercises, the WB-EMS group followed a Whole-body electromyostimulation combined training protocol, and the CSE Plus group engaged in a combined program protocol (CSE with the WB-EMS vest), and the control group only participated in activities of daily living. Anthropometric parameters and outcomes, including the lordosis angle and dynamic balance, were assessed before and after a six-week training program. A flexible ruler was used to measure the angle of lordosis, and the Y balance test was employed to evaluate the dynamic balance. Results The results indicated that the lordosis angle improved in both the CSE and CSE Plus groups compared to the CG in the post-test (P = 0.017, P = 0.024). However, there were no significant differences observed between the other group pairs. Additionally, a significant difference in dynamic balance was found between the CSE Plus group and the CG in the post-test (P = 0.001), while no significant differences were observed between the other group pairs. Abstract Aim To identify the effects of strength and balance training on dynamic balance and patient reported outcomes in people with chronic ankle instability(CAI). Method Five databases(CNKI, WanFang, Web of Science, EBSCO-SPORTD and PubMed were searched in September 2022. The search was conducted on randomized controlled trials(RCTs) that the effects of strength training, balance training and combination of strength and balance training in people with chronic ankle instability compared to a control group. Using Review Manager 5.3 and Stata-SE 15 to conduct Meta-analysis on the included literature. methodological quality and risk of bias were assessed by using the PEDro scale. Results A total of 33 Chinese and English RCTs document were screened and 1154 patients with CAI were included in the study. Compared with control group, strength training, balance training and combination of strength and balance training demonstrated to be more effective in terms of improving patient reported outcomes(strength training: SMD = 0.80, 95%CI = 0.39–1.22; balance training: SMD = 0.79, 95%CI = 0.41–1.17; combination of strength and balance training: SMD = 1.28, 95%CI = 0.57, 1.99). Subgroup analysis: Intervention for 6 weeks, more than 3 times a week and more than 30 min each time were the best rehabilitation programs to improve CAI patientreported outcomes. Compared with control group, balance training demonstrated to be more effective in terms of improving Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT)((anterior: SMD = 0.71, 95%CI = 0.03–1.40; posterolateral: SMD = 0.84, 95%CI = 0.22–1.46; posteromedial: SMD = 0.88, 95%CI = 0.45–1.32). However, strength training and combination of strength and balance training had no improvement effects on SEBT. Conclusions Available evidence showed that, results of the comparison between balance training versus strength training suggest that the combination of strength and balance training achieves greater benefits for patient reported outcomes and balance training could bring greater benefits to dynamic balance. Background: As a therapeutic tool, kinesiology taping (KT) has become increasingly popular for musculoskeletal injuries utilized by physiotherapists. KT has been found to have effects on facilitating muscle strength by generating a concentric pull on the fascia. However, little is known about KT in the improvement of dynamic and static balance. This study aims to explore whether KT on the quadriceps muscle has any immediate effects on static and dynamic balance. Methodology: Twenty-seven healthy individuals (13 males and 14 females, aged 22 to 29) were recruited in a crossover study with two conditions: KT and no taping. KT was applied to the quadriceps muscle for the taping group, with the control receiving no taping. Pre- and post-test measurements were taken to give an indication of the effect of the tape on balance performance. Center of Pressure Excursion (COPE) and Time to Stabilization (TTS) when landing from a hop test and Y Balance test combined score (YBTCS) were used to assess a stabilizing balance activity and a dynamic balance. The pre- and postintervention were collected, with differences explored using repeated measures ANOVA with time and condition (tape) factor analysis. Results: We found a significant improvement (p≤  0.05) with a moderate to large effect size in YBTCS between KT and no taping, indicating enhanced balance performance in the KT group. However, no significant difference (p≥  0.05) with small to moderate effect size was found in COPE or TTS between the two conditions during landing tests, suggesting similar balance capabilities in these specific measures. Conclusion: The use of KT shows no significant immediate effect on static balance in healthy individuals when applied to the quadriceps muscles; however, it demonstrates a positive immediate effect on dynamic balance. Background: Robotic devices are known to provide pivotal parameters to assess motor functions in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) as dynamic balance. However, there is still a lack of validation studies comparing innovative technologies with standard solutions. Thus, this study's aim was to compare the postural assessment of fifty people with MS (PwMS) during dynamic tasks performed with the gold standard EquiTest® and the robotic platform hunova®, using Center of Pressure (COP)-related parameters and global balance indexes. Methods: Pearson's ρ correlations were run for each COP-related measure and the global balance index was computed from EquiTest® and hunova® in both open (EO) and closed-eyes (EC) conditions. Results: Considering COP-related parameters, all correlations were significant in both EO (0.337 ≤ ρ ≤ 0.653) and EC (0.344 ≤ ρ ≤ 0.668). Furthermore, Pearson's analysis of global balance indexes revealed relatively strong for visual and vestibular, and strong for somatosensory system associations (ρ = 0.573; ρ = 0.494; ρ = 0.710, respectively). Conclusions: Findings confirm the use of hunova® as a valid device for dynamic balance assessment in MS, suggesting that such a robotic platform could allow for a more sensitive assessment of balance over time, and thus a better evaluation of the effectiveness of personalized treatment, thereby improving evidence-based clinical practice. Single-leg knee crutches are a relatively new, hands-free mobility assistive device with benefits over standard axillary crutches. Our main goal in this study was to evaluate balance ability in a healthy population upon first exposure to the knee crutch device. We had 20 healthy individuals (M age = 21.1; SD = 1.5 years) complete baseline static and dynamic balance tests on a force plate, followed by knee crutch fitting, a self-selected duration of ambulation practice, and another round of balance testing while wearing the knee crutch. We used the BTrackS Balance Test (BBT) to measure static balance, and the BTrackS Limits of Stability (BLOS) test to measure dynamic balance, and we created a custom lateral bias score from the BLOS results. On average, participants self-selected 3.1 minutes of ambulation practice. Wearing the knee crutch caused a near doubling of static balance path length and a large reduction in percentile ranking on the BBT. Dynamic balance area was more than halved (p <.001), with lateral bias scores during the BLOS, indicating that participants heavily favored their non-crutched leg (p <.001). Our results indicate that static and dynamic balance were significantly altered when wearing the knee crutch, and participants seemed to switch to a single leg stance strategy. Aim: The aging global population poses increasing challenges related to falls and dementia. Early identification of cognitive decline, particularly before noticeable symptoms manifest, is crucial for effective intervention. This review aims to determine the dynamic balance test most closely associated with executive function, potentially serving as a biomarker for cognitive decline. Recent findings: Based on recent reviews, inhibitory control, a component of executive function, holds significance in influencing balance performance. Studies suggest that the strength of the correlation between cognition and balance tends to be domain-specific and task-specific. Despite these findings, inconclusive evidence remains regarding the connection between executive function and various dynamic balance assessments. Summary: Our review identifies a significant association between all dynamic balance tests and executive function, albeit with varying strengths. Notably, a medium effect size is observed for the Timed Up and Go and Functional Reach Test, a small effect size for balance scales, and a strong effect size for postural sway. This review underscores a clear relationship between dynamic balance task performance and executive function. It is unclear whether the brain handles auditory cues similarly to visual cues for balance. We investigated the influence of headphones and loudspeaker reproduction of sounds on dynamic balance performance when an individual is facing a cognitive challenge. Twenty participants (16 females, aged 19–36) were asked to avoid a ball according to a specific visual rule. Visuals were projected from the HTC Vive head-mounted display in an acoustically controlled space. We varied the environment by adding congruent sounds (sounds coincide with the visual rule) or incongruent sounds (sounds may or may not coincide with the visual rule) as well as creating a multimodal (visual and congruent sounds) vs. unimodal (visual or congruent sounds only) display of stimuli. Sounds were played over headphones or loudspeakers. We quantified reaction time (RT) and accuracy (choosing the correct direction to move) by capturing the head movement. We found that in the absence of sounds, RT was slower with headphones compared to loudspeakers, but the introduction of either congruent or incongruent sounds resulted in faster movements with headphones such that RT was no longer different between apparatus. Participants used congruent sounds to improve accuracy but disregarded incongruent sounds. This suggests that selective attention may explain how sounds are incorporated into dynamic balance performance in healthy young adults. Participants leveraged sounds played over loudspeakers, but not over headphones, to enhance accuracy in a unimodal dark environment. The aim was to investigate the effect of the KNEE program on postural control as measured by the modified Star Excursion Balance test (mSEBT) in Australian club level netball players. Two netball teams from Netball NSW Premier-League were recruited and randomized to complete either the KNEE program or a traditional warm-up. Cumulative, anterior, posteromedial, and posterolateral directions of the mSEBT were measured for both limbs at baseline, 8-weeks, and 5-months. Linear mixed models were used to assess the effect of the intervention on mSEBT outcomes. When compared to a traditional warm-up, the KNEE program led to improvements in postural control in the PM direction of the mSEBT at 8 weeks (R: p = 0.005; L = 0.016) and 5 months (R: p = 0.006 and L: p = 0.026). For the cumulative score, there was a main effect of time with significant improvements between baseline and subsequent time points (p < 0.03), but there was no effect of group or interaction. No significant changes were found in ANT and PL directions. The KNEE program when implemented as a warm-up prior to training and match-play can improve postural control in the PM direction which is integral to Netball. • The effect of the KNEE program is more pronounced in the posteromedial direction of the mSEBT. • Over the course of the season, the cumulative score of the mSEBT improves regardless of intervention. • There is no effect of the KNEE program or time on anterior and posterolateral directions. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a 12 week structured functional training program on various aspects of physical fitness in different age groups within the elderly population, including active adults (aged 50-59 years) and geriatric individuals (aged 60 years and above). The interventions targeted leg strength and endurance, static and dynamic balance, aerobic capacity, and upper and lower body range of motion. The structured training program incorporated multiple fitness components; including core strength, balance and stability for fall prevention, mobility and flexibility, and multipoint exercises. The experimental groups, consisting of both active adults and geriatric participants, underwent the 12-week training program, which was then compared to respective control groups. The data was collected at three time periods pre (0 week), mid (6 week), and post (12 week) after successfully following the structured training program. The statistical analysis included the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, descriptive analysis (mean ± SD), inferential analysis (2*3*2 repeated measure ANOVA), followed by the effect size (Cohen's D and partial eta square). When considering the contradictions between river management and protection in a typical plain river network, it is always confirmed that the river area has usually been encroached upon due to the development of human society. Based on the analysis of multiple attributes of the river network, a statistical model has been proposed in this study in order to determine the river network protection indices such as river area ratio, storage capacity and flux. In this study, a numerical method is proposed to improve the structure and connectivity of the river network by calculating the occupation and supplement balance. According to the principle of water area dynamic balance, the river network structure and its connectivity are improved through water area adjustment in a typical coastal city. As the simulation results show, the water surface ratio equals 8.17%, the storage capacity equals 112.6 million m3 and the water flux equals to 656.06 m3/s in the selected study area. The flood drainage capacity is introduced as the priority function, other functions are also improved due to river management and protection. The harmonious and sustainable coexistence between human society and the river network is then promoted. This comprehensive statistical model proved to be a good tool for the coastal area to enhance the comprehensive attributes of the coastal plain river network and the sustainable development of the local area in the future. Balance involves interpreting sensory impulses and coordinated movements to maintain posture. While activities like ballet improve balance, little is known about Sema’s impact. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the effects of rhythmic Sema activity on both static and dynamic balance, as well as the performance of whirling dervishes (semazens). Thirty whirling dervishes (29.67 ± 8.02 years) with a minimum of 3 years of experience, and 30 individuals without prior Sema activity experience (28.53 ± 6.56 years) were included. Static balance and dynamic balance were assessed using the Balance Error Scoring System (BESS) and the Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT), respectively. Performance evaluations included vertical jumping, standing long jump, and single-leg hop tests. It was observed that the whirling dervishes performed better, particularly in terms of single-leg on a foam surface static balance (BESS). However, dynamic balance scores (SEBT), with the exception of the anterior and posterior directions and composite values, were better in the control group. There were no statistically significant differences in the outcomes of performance tests. Methods: In a parallel randomized controlled trial study, seventy five untrained male adults with hyperlordosis, recruited from clinics of sports medicine and corrective exercise centers in Tehran, were randomly assigned to four groups: CSE (n = 19), WB-EMS (n = 18), CSE Plus (n = 18), and control Group (CG) (n = 20). The CSE group performed Core stability exercises, the WB-EMS group followed a Whole-body electromyostimulation combined training protocol, and the CSE Plus group engaged in a combined program protocol (CSE with the WB-EMS vest), and the control group only participated in activities of daily living. Anthropometric parameters and outcomes, including the lordosis angle and dynamic balance, were assessed before and after a six-week training program. A flexible ruler was used to measure the angle of lordosis, and the Y balance test was employed to evaluate the dynamic balance. Results: The results indicated that the lordosis angle improved in both the CSE and CSE Plus groups compared to the CG in the post-test (P = 0.017, P = 0.024). However, there were no significant differences observed between the other group pairs. Additionally, a significant difference in dynamic balance was found between the CSE Plus group and the CG in the post-test (P = 0.001), while no significant differences were observed between the other group pairs. Furthermore, within-group test results demonstrated that lumbar lordosis angle and dynamic balance variables significantly improved in the post-test compared to the pre-test stage (P < 0.05). Conclusions: The two CSE and CSE Plus training protocols are effective as training methods for correcting certain parameters and physical deformities, including lumbar lordosis. Furthermore, the CSE Plus group demonstrated a positive impact on improving dynamic balance. Consequently, it is highly recommended that individuals with hyperlordosis can benefit from the exercises of the present study, especially CSE Plus exercises along with other rehabilitation exercises. Aim: To identify the effects of strength and balance training on dynamic balance and patient reported outcomes in people with chronic ankle instability(CAI). Method: Five databases(CNKI, WanFang, Web of Science, EBSCO-SPORTD and PubMed were searched in September 2022. The search was conducted on randomized controlled trials(RCTs) that the effects of strength training, balance training and combination of strength and balance training in people with chronic ankle instability compared to a control group. Using Review Manager 5.3 and Stata-SE 15 to conduct Meta-analysis on the included literature. methodological quality and risk of bias were assessed by using the PEDro scale. Results: A total of 33 Chinese and English RCTs document were screened and 1154 patients with CAI were included in the study. Compared with control group, strength training, balance training and combination of strength and balance training demonstrated to be more effective in terms of improving patient reported outcomes(strength training: SMD = 0.80, 95%CI = 0.39–1.22; balance training: SMD = 0.79, 95%CI = 0.41–1.17; combination of strength and balance training: SMD = 1.28, 95%CI = 0.57, 1.99). Subgroup analysis: Intervention for 6 weeks, more than 3 times a week and more than 30 min each time were the best rehabilitation programs to improve CAI patientreported outcomes. Compared with control group, balance training demonstrated to be more effective in terms of improving Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT)((anterior: SMD = 0.71, 95%CI = 0.03–1.40; posterolateral: SMD = 0.84, 95%CI = 0.22–1.46; posteromedial: SMD = 0.88, 95%CI = 0.45–1.32). However, strength training and combination of strength and balance training had no improvement effects on SEBT. Conclusions: Available evidence showed that, results of the comparison between balance training versus strength training suggest that the combination of strength and balance training achieves greater benefits for patient reported outcomes and balance training could bring greater benefits to dynamic balance. Strength training should be used cautiously in clinic to improve the dynamic balance in individuals with CAI. Impairments of postural responses are a salient feature of children with cerebral palsy (CP). While the systems approach describes balance in seven components, the relationship between trunk control and balance in children with CP has not been previously examined with all seven of these components. In this study, we aimed to identify correlations between trunk control and all seven systems approach balance components in children with bilateral spastic CP. Our participants were 30 children (M age = 11.83, SD = 2.32 years) with CP having a Gross Motor Function Classification System level ranging from I to III. We assessed trunk control with the Trunk Control Measurement Scale, including static and dynamic balance (selective voluntary control and reaching). Balance in standing was assessed using Kids-Mini-BESTest involving four domains: anticipatory, reactive, sensory orientation and stability in gait. We used Spearman's rank correlations to correlate trunk control and balance, and we obtained a moderate correlation between the trunk control measurement scale and the Kids-Mini-BESTest in children with both bilateral spastic CP (rs =.618, p <.001) and spastic diplegic CP (rs =.52, p =.02). Analysis of the correlations between separate domains of the Kids-Mini-BESTest and the trunk control measurement scale subscales revealed moderate correlations between the static sitting balance subscale and all four domains of the Kids-Mini-BESTest. The dynamic selective motor control subscale of the trunk control measurement scale moderately correlated with the anticipatory domain of the Kids-Mini-BESTest. The dynamic reaching subscale also correlated moderately with anticipatory and stability in gait domains. This correlation was statistically significant in the 13 to 17-year-old age group and was strong among females, whereas the correlation was moderate in males. Physiotherapy is a physically demanding profession. Health and skill-related physical fitness should be emphasized in physiotherapy students for both the personal benefit on their own health and injury prevention and for the sustainability of their ability to meet job demands. This study aims to assess levels of health and skill-related physical fitness in undergraduate physiotherapy students in Jordan. A cross sectional study of 109 physiotherapy students; 23 males aged 19.57 (1.44) years and 86 females aged 20.02 (2.61) years. The following health and skill-related physical fitness components were assessed: body mass index (BMI), modified sit and reach, partial curl-up, push-ups, vertical jump, 20-m shuttle run, handgrip strength, 4x10 shuttle run, and star excursion balance tests. Most of the students had normal BMI (65.1%) but levels of physical fitness were mainly poor and below average except for hamstring flexibility which was excellent. Lack of normative data on agility and dynamic balance in healthy adults who are not athletes limited determining their level in our students. The results mainly demonstrated poor levels of health-related physical fitness of Jordanian physiotherapy students, which could have a significant effect on their performance and increase their risk of injury. Dynamic balance and agility results are presented for the first time in healthy adults (not athletes) which could be used in future research. Objectives: To assess dynamic balance and vertical jump pre and post Suspension training and Plyometrictraining in competitive basketball players. Methods: 24 basketball players aged 18-24 were selected and randomly assigned to three groups namely Suspension training, Plyometrics and the control group. Supervised sessions were held for 8 weeks, 2 times a week for 45 minutes. Pre and post assessment for dynamic balance and vertical jump was done. Results: Suspension training and Plyometric training both have shown a positive effect on dynamic balance (p <0.007 ) except for anterior direction and vertical jump (p <0.007) in basketball players. The results of the control group have shown a lot of variability as no specific training was given for dynamic balance and vertical jump. Conclusion: Suspension training and Plyometric training have positive effect on dynamic balance and vertical jump height. However, no training method is found to be more efficient than the other. ObjectiveThis study aims to investigate the plantar biomechanics of healthy young males as they descend a single transition step from varying heights.MethodsThirty healthy young males participated the experiment using the F-scan insole plantar pressure system in which participants made single transition steps descent from four step heights (5, 15, 25, and 35 cm), leading with their dominant or non-dominant foot. Plantar pressure data were collected for 5 s during the period between landing touchdown and standing on the ground. Landing at each step height was repeated three times, with a five-minute rest between different height trials.ResultsAt 5 cm and 15 cm steps, participants demonstrated a rearfoot landing strategy on both sides. However, forefoot contact was observed at heights of 25 cm and 35 cm. Parameters related to center of plantar pressure (COP) of the leading foot were significantly larger compared to the trailing foot (P < 0.001), increased with higher step heights. Vertical ground reaction forces for the biped, leading and trailing feet decreased with increasing step height (all P < 0.05). The leading foot had a higher proportion of overall and forefoot loads, and a lower proportion of rearfoot load compared to the trailing foot (P < 0.001). The overall load on the dominant side was lower than that on the non-dominant side for both the leading and trailing feet (P < 0.001). For the trailing foot, forefoot load on the dominant side was lower than that on the non-dominant side, however, the opposite result appeared in rearfoot load (P < 0.001). Upon the leading foot landing, forefoot load exceeded the rearfoot load for the dominant (P < 0.001) and non-dominant sides (P < 0.001). Upon the trailing foot landing, forefoot load was lower than the rearfoot load for the dominant (P < 0.001) and non-dominant sides (P = 0.019).ConclusionWhen the characteristics of biomechanical stability are compromised by step height, landing foot, and footedness factors — due to altered foot landing strategies, changing COP, or uneven force distribution — ability to control motion efficiently and respond adaptively to the forces experienced during movement is challenged, increasing the likelihood of loss of dynamic balance, with a consequent increased risk of ankle sprains and falls.

BackgroundThe “SEBT group,” which includes the Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT), its modified version (mSEBT), and the Lower Quarter Y-Balance Test (YBT-LQ), is used to assess the limits of stability. Interestingly, the testing protocol allows users a considerable degree of flexibility, which can affect the obtained results. Therefore, the objective of this systematic review was to analyze the impact of different protocol variants within the “SEBT group” on outcomes.MethodsData were acquired by searching 4 databases (MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, Wiley, Springer Link) focusing on studies published in English in peer-reviewed journals, empirical in nature, conducted on healthy individuals, and examining the effects of various protocol variants on test outcomes. Study quality was assessed with the NHLBI quality assessment tool for pre-post studies with no control group.ResultsThe calculation method based on the maximum repetition yields statistically significantly higher results compared to other calculation methods. Allowing unrestricted arm movements during the test results in statistically significantly higher scores compared to the procedure that restricts arm movements. The impact of a warm-up, wearing footwear during testing, and using a dedicated kit remains ambiguous. To obtain reliable results, 4–6 familiarization trials are necessary, though fewer may suffice for athletes experienced in performing the test.ConclusionThis systematic review highlights the significant impact of the calculation method and arm movement restrictions on the outcomes of the “SEBT group.” The effects of wearing footwear during testing, warm-up, and using a dedicated test kit remain unclear. The required number of familiarization repetitions may varies depending on biological maturity level of the person being tested. Objective Movement and balance skills of children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder are weaker than normal children. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a course of kata exercises on static and dynamic balance in children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Methods This research was semi-experimental. The statistical population of the current study was all female children aged 10 to 12 years old with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder in Hamadan city. The subjects of this research were 30 children who were selected by convenience sampling. At first, the characteristics of body measurements and static and dynamic balance pre-tests of children were recorded. After matching, subjects were randomly assigned to two control or experimental groups of 15 individuals. Then the participants of the experimental group participated in the protocol of kata exercises for 12 weeks and three sessions per week. Objective: To explore the balance performance of young adults under the interference of different cognitive tasks, and the moderating effect of long-term physical exercise. Method: The static and dynamic balance of healthy young people with physical exercise habit and without physical exercise habit were tested under the interference of different cognitive tasks. One-way repeated measures ANOVA was performed with the group variable (Group) as the between- subjects factor and the results of multiple balance tests (Task) as the within-subjects variable. Result: Long term physical exercise had a positive moderating effect on the static balance during calculation, singing, and writing interference, the static mediolateral symmetrical balance during writing interference, the static anteroposterior symmetrical balance during singing interference, and the dynamic balance during computing interference (P＜0.05) . The dual-task cost of young people was significantly reduced when they are disturbed by the corresponding cognitive tasks (P＜0.05) . However, it had a negative regulatory effect on the static mediolateral balance of calculation interference, the static anteroposterior balance of reading interference, and the dynamic mediolateral balance of calculation and singing interference (P＜0.05) . Conclusion: Long term physical exercise has a significant moderating effect on young people's dynamic and static balance performance when different cognitive tasks are disturbed. People with degenerative cervical myelopathy are known to have impaired standing balance and walking abilities, but less is known about balance responses during walking. The aim of this project was to assess reactive balance impairments during walking in people with degenerative cervical myelopathy (PwDCM). We hypothesized that center of mass motion following perturbations would be larger in PwDCM and gluteus medius electromyographic amplitude responses would be decreased in PwDCM. Reactive balance responses were quantified during unanticipated lateral pulls to the waist while treadmill walking. Walking biomechanics data were collected from 10 PwDCM (F=6) and 10 non-myelopathic controls (F=7) using an 8 camera Vicon System (Vicon MX T-Series). Electromyography was collected from lower limb muscles. Participants walked on an instrumented treadmill and received lateral pulls at random intervals and in randomized direction at 5% and 2.5% body mass. Participants walked at 3 prescribed foot placements to control for effects of the size of base of support. As compared with controls, the perturbation-related positional change of the center of mass motion (ΔCOM) was increased in PwDCM (p=0.001) with similar changes in foot placement (p>0.05). Change in gluteus medius electromyography, however, was less in PwDCM than in controls (p<0.001). After experimentally controlling step width, people with mild-to-moderate degenerative cervical myelopathy at least 3 months following cervical spine surgery have impaired reactive balance during walking likely coupled with reduced gluteus medius electromyographic responses. Rehabilitation programs focusing on reactive balance and power are likely necessary for this population. • Following surgical decompression, people with degenerative cervical myelopathy have residual balance impairments during walking. • Impairments exist regardless of pre-perturbation step width. • People with degenerative cervical myelopathy have a blunted hip abductor muscle response following perturbation.
