Search

After years of development, holography has become an essential tool of modern optics for many applications. Among them, holographic encryption and dynamic display are the two most typical applications. So far, however, only 2D targets or 2D images of 3D targets can be encrypted with holographic technology. The 3D multiplexing holographic technology of 3D multi‐targets has not yet been realized and holographic encryption of 3D multi‐targets is still a blank. Here, the conception of 3D orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexing holography is proposed, and holographic encryption of 3D multi‐targets is realized for the first time. This breaks the restriction that only 2D images can be encrypted in traditional holographic encryption. Furthermore, the results also show that the 3D OAM holography can be used in the dynamic display for 3D multi‐targets. In the experiment, the metasurface is used for taking its high‐resolution advantage in light field manipulation, and verify the feasibility of 3D OAM multiplexing holographic technology, holographic encryption of 3D multi‐targets, and holographic dynamic display of 3D targets. Incorporating specific motifs to provide tangible evidence of authenticity is a direct and effective measure against counterfeiting. However, achieving multi‐level anticounterfeiting through multiple motifs requires utilizing numerous stimulus sources to configure region‐specific emissions with customizable colors, which is complex, costly, and inaccessible. To address this challenge, a hybrid luminescent display is developed by integrating an internal down‐conversion layer with an organic light‐emitting diode (OLED). The internal down‐conversion layer can effectively extract the substrate and waveguide modes, resulting in a very rare outcome where the efficiency of a hybrid down‐conversion white OLED exceeds that of the pump light source. More importantly, by combining voltage‐modulated color‐tunable electroluminescence (EL) with EL‐induced down‐conversion luminescence, this unique design can precisely create dynamic and configurable multi‐color display patterns using only electrical stimulation. For anticounterfeiting purposes, the further amalgamation of the dynamic hybrid luminescent display device with the Internet of Things for digital authentication, and with fingerprint features for physical unclonable functions showcases unprecedented security. On‐chip integrated meta‐optics hold tremendous potential for optical imaging and display applications compatible with integrated photonic devices. Despite recent endeavors in multi‐dimensional image display, it remains a challenge to realize dynamic holography applications with on‐chip integration scheme and facile accessible tuning approach. Herein, an on‐chip hydrogel‐waveguiding platform with single‐step fabrication is demonstrated for dynamic colorful holography. By exploiting the optical tunable property of the waveguiding hydrogel, the on‐chip hydrogel metasurface enables optical concealment ON/OFF and dynamic dual‐channel holographic switch within 310 ms through a simple exhalation process. Furthermore, utilizing the waveguiding hydrogel dispersion and the correlation between extraction efficiency and relative humidity, a color‐mixed holographic image is encrypted and successfully exhibited at specific humidity condition. Beyond the conventional static on‐chip monochromatic holography, such a dynamic on‐chip hydrogel platform enjoys satisfactory humidity‐responsivity, high integration capability, full‐color potential, and zero‐order diffraction interference‐free, which suggests potential applications in active optical information concealment/encryption, full‐color holography, and next‐generation wearable AR devices. Dynamic holography can reconstruct realistic and highly interactive 3D scenes, offering a promising way for future display. Emerging metasurface with small pixel size and powerful light modulation capability demonstrates performance superior to traditional spatial light modulators, but dynamic meta‐holography with high information capacity and high frame rate remains a challenge. This paper presents a design scheme combining a preset polarization‐dependent metasurface with a high‐speed projection module to realize smooth dynamic display at multiple polarization states. With the projection module, the system can achieve dynamic meta‐holography at two orthogonal circular polarization states with 237 and 247 different holographic frames respectively, and grayscale meta‐nanoprinting at a linear polarization state with three different patterns. At the same time, the polarization multiplexed dynamic display scheme enables independent displays at three distinct polarization states with an extremely high frame rate (9523 frames per second). In this study, we introduce elliptical nanopillar structures on metasurfaces, which have been theoretically validated to exhibit both transmitted and reflected colors that can be dynamically adjusted by changing the polarization of incident light. The interaction between electric quadrupole resonance and magnetic dipole resonance within the bilayer Al-HfO2 nanopillars produces pronounced monochromatic transmission peaks and maintains vibrant reflective colors due to minimal losses. By altering the duty cycle and period of the structure, a diverse range of colors is achievable. Furthermore, we developed polarization-tunable pixels that can be adjusted from 0° to 180° using a modular design. Stimuli‐responsive patterned photonic actuators, characterized by their patterned nano/microscale structures and capacity to demonstrate synergistic color changes and shape morphing in response to external stimuli, have attracted intense scientific attention. However, traditional patterned photonic actuator systems still face limitations such as cumbersome and time‐consuming preparation processes and small‐scale deformations. Herein, we introduce a facile approach involving an athermal embossing technique to rapidly fabricate patterned photonic actuators based on near‐infrared (NIR) light‐responsive liquid crystal elastomers. The resulting patterned photonic actuators demonstrate remarkable features, including brilliant angle‐dependent structural color, complex three‐dimensional actuation, and good color durability under NIR light stimulation. As illustrative demonstrations of the proof‐of‐concept, we fabricate two light‐fuelled patterned photonic soft actuators: a butterfly‐inspired actuator that can produce wing‐flapping dynamic changes in structural color, and an origami crane‐shaped actuator with shape memory, structural color information storage, and dynamic display properties. Color metasurface holograms are powerful and versatile platforms for modulating the amplitude, phase, polarization, and other properties of light at multiple operating wavelengths. However, the current color metasurface holography can only realize static manipulation. In this study, we propose and demonstrate a multiplexing metasurface technique combined with multiwavelength code-division multiplexing (CDM) to realize dynamic manipulation. Multicolor code references are utilized to record information within a single metasurface and increase the information capacity and security for anti-cracks. A total of 48 monochrome images consisting of pure color characters and multilevel color video frames were reconstructed in dual polarization channels of the birefringent metasurface to exhibit high information density, and a video was displayed via sequential illumination of the corresponding code patterns to verify the ability of dynamic manipulation. Our approach demonstrates significant application potential in optical data storage, optical encryption, multiwavelength-versatile diffractive optical elements, and stimulated emission depletion microscopy.

Display and power supply have been two essential and independent cornerstones of modern electronics. Here, we report a lithium-plasmon-based low-powered dynamic color display with intrinsic dual functionality (plasmonic display and energy recycling unit) which is a result of the electric-field-driven transformation of nanostructured lithium metals. Dynamic color displays are enabled by plasmonic transformation through electrodeposition (electrostripping) of lithium metals during the charging (discharging) process, while the consumed energy for coloring can be retrieved in the inverse process respectively. Energy recycling of lithium metals brings energy consumption down to 0.390 mW cm−2 (0.105 mW cm−2) for the active (static) coloration state of a proof-of-concept display/battery device, which approaches nearly-zero-energy-consumption in the near-100%-energy-efficiency limit of commercial lithium batteries. Combining the subwavelength feature of plasmonics with effective energy recycling, the lithium-plasmon-based dynamic display offers a promising route towards next-generation integrated photonic devices, with the intriguing advantages of low energy consumption, a small footprint and high resolution. Biosensing displays, increasingly enrolled in emotional reflection, promise authoritative insight by presenting users’ emotions as discrete categories. Rather than machines interpreting emotions, we sought to explore an alternative with emotional biosensing displays in which users formed their own interpretations and felt comfortable critiquing the display. So, we designed, implemented, and deployed, as a technology probe, an emotional biosensory display: Ripple is a shirt whose pattern changes color responding to the wearer’s skin conductance, which is associated with excitement. 17 participants wore Ripple over 2 days of daily life. While some participants appreciated the ‘physical connection’ Ripple provided between body and emotion, for others Ripple fostered insecurities about ‘how much’ feeling they had. Despite our design intentions, we found participants rarely questioned the display’s relation to their feelings. Using biopolitics to speculate on Ripple’s surprising authority, we highlight ethical stakes of biosensory representations for sense of self and ways of feeling.

As a new type of reflective display technology with paper-like display performance, electrowetting display (EWD) can realize ultra-low power consumption, wide viewing angle and fast response speed. In order to apply the EWD to the large-size display field, an extensible driving model for multiple grayscales colorful EWDs was proposed in this paper. The proposed driving model consisted of a grayscale model, a colorful display model and an extensible driving model. With the grayscale model and the colorful display model, the driving waveform of the colorful grayscale display was designed based on limited output voltage levels of a general-purpose graphic driver chip. And then, the extensible driving model was used to realize the large-size display large-scale display based on a matrix of small-size EWD panels. In addition, an experimental platform, which was composed of the display panel and the driving board with a data interface, was designed based on the proposed models. Experimental results showed that it could realize an 18-bit colorful dynamic display on the extended display matrix with a resolution of 48*16. It was indicated that the display matrix could be used for multiple grayscales and colorful dynamic displays by applying the proposed driving models. The research has brought about a way of enlarging the size of the EWD, which is conducive to broadening the scope of application of EWDs.

Highlights Wearable and smart textiles are constructed by integrating embroidery technology and 5G cloud communication, showing promising applications in temperature management and real-time dynamic textile displays. Thermochromism is introduced into the natural silk to produce high-performance thermochromic silks (TCSs) through a low cost, sustainable, efficient, and scalable strategy. The interfacial bonding of the continuously produced TCSs is in situ analyzed and improved through pre-solvent treatment and is confirmed using synchrotron Fourier transform infrared microspectroscopy. Abstract Silks have various advantages compared with synthetic polymer fibers, such as sustainability, mechanical properties, luster, as well as air and humidity permeability. However, the functionalization of silks has not yet been fully developed. Functionalization techniques that retain or even improve the sustainability of silk production are required. To this end, a low-cost, effective, and scalable strategy to produce TCSs by integrating yarn-spinning and continuous dip coating technique is developed herein. TCSs with extremely long length (> 10 km), high mechanical performance (strength of 443.1 MPa, toughness of 56.0 MJ m−3, comparable with natural cocoon silk), and good interfacial bonding were developed. TCSs can be automatically woven into arbitrary fabrics, which feature super-hydrophobicity as well as rapid and programmable thermochromic responses with good cyclic performance: the response speed reached to one second and remained stable after hundreds of tests. Finally, applications of TCS fabrics in temperature management and dynamic textile displays are demonstrated, confirming their application potential in smart textiles, wearable devices, flexible displays, and human–machine interfaces. Moreover, combination of the fabrication and the demonstrated applications is expected to bridge the gap between lab research and industry and accelerate the commercialization of TCSs.

An important topic of modern nanophotonics focuses on the bound states in the continuum (BIC) that the non-radiative localized waves lie within the radiative continuous spectrum, which has been introduced into metasurfaces to construct a strong resonance system. The development of theory and application promotes the advanced physics research on metasurfaces supporting dynamic BIC. However, the dynamic conversion between quasi-BIC and BIC of the metasurfaces is still not realized in strict sense. Herein, we report a significant progress that the free switch between BIC and quasi-BIC is successfully achieved by introducing the structured graphene into the metal terahertz metasurfaces, which is based on free-electron concentration of graphene changing from semiconductor-like to metal-like with adjustment of Fermi energy. We propose the efficient-structure model to explain these phenomena, and prove the wide applicability of this model by investigating seven class metal structures which includes a parameter-tuned metasurface and six common symmetry-protected metasurfaces. The further investigation shows such graphene-metal metasurface array has potential application in dynamic display, and it only needs to change the bias voltage applied on each structure to obtain different display contents, without the requirement of preparing additional metasurface array, which is impossible to achieve via traditional static metasurfaces. When pen, pressure, and touch sensor are respectively applied to a new form‐factor display, it becomes difficult to secure a folding flexibility due to increase in thickness. To solve these problems, this paper proposes an integrated user interface solution that can realize pen, pressure, and touch sensor functions with one integrated sensor. The Multi‐channel structured electrode is patterned on the substrate, and the total thickness of this integrated sensor is less than 30um, which is able to be applied to the bottom of the new form‐factor display panel to achieve a precision of 0.35mm and a sensitivity of 10gf approximately, which is the brushstroke level. Searching for targets among similar distractors requires more time as the number of items increases, with search efficiency measured by the slope of the reaction-time (RT)/set-size function. Horowitz and Wolfe (Nature, 394(6693), 575–577, 1998) found that the target-present RT slopes were as similar for "dynamic" as for standard static search, even though the items were randomly reshuffled every 110 ms in dynamic search. Somewhat surprisingly, attempts to understand dynamic search have ignored that the target-absent RT slope was as low (or "flat") as the target-present slope—so that the mechanisms driving search performance under dynamic conditions remain unclear. Here, we report three experiments that further explored search in dynamic versus static displays. Experiment 1 confirmed that the target-absent:target-present slope ratio was close to or smaller than 1 in dynamic search, as compared with being close to or above 2 in static search. This pattern did not change when reward was assigned to either correct target-absent or correct target-present responses (Experiment 2), or when the search difficulty was increased (Experiment 3). Combining analysis of search sensitivity and response criteria, we developed a multiple-decisions model that successfully accounts for the differential slope patterns in dynamic versus static search. Two factors in the model turned out to be critical for generating the 1:1 slope ratio in dynamic search: the "quit-the-search" decision variable accumulated based upon the likelihood of "target absence" within each individual sample in the multiple-decisions process, whilst the stopping threshold was a linear function of the set size and reward manipulation. Although metalenses have extraordinary optical performance, it is still not enough in some occasions such as wavefront detection for adaptive optics and display for large area applications. Using a metalens array is an ideal solution to solve these problems. Unfortunately, the common metalens array cannot be adjusted once it is fabricated, which limits its range of application. In this article, we designed an actively tunable metalens array for the first time by arranging the patterned phase change material Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) appropriately. For the metalens array designed at the wavelength of 4.6 μm, it had excellent broadband performance in the range from 4.5 μm to 5.2 μm. On the other hand, by tuning the phase state of GST, the focus and display of the metalens array can be controlled, acting as switching on or off. Furthermore, any graphics constructed with patterned focal spots can be achieved when the metalens array has sufficient secondary unit cells. Humidity-responsive materials offer a promising approach to achieving tunable metasurface systems due to their fast and reversible swelling responses to moisture, which enables many important applications, such as real-time humidity sensing, optical switches, dynamic displays, and optical information encryption. However, the humidity-responsive structural coloration generally cannot provide a high spatial resolution and requires a complex patterning process. Here, we present a scalable moisture-driven color-changing Fabry-Pérot (FP)-like cavity composed of a polyvinyl alcohol layer sandwiched between an upper gold nanoparticles assembly and a bottom gold mirror. Through nanoparticle contact printing, we pixelated these cavities with sub-micrometer sizes without crosstalk and achieved an ultrahigh display resolution of ∼400 nm. Meanwhile, these nanoparticle-based FP (NBFP) cavities exhibit more vibrant colors than those of conventional film-based ones due to broadband absorption of the disordered nanoparticle assembly. Moreover, the NBFP cavities exhibit a rapid response (<300 ms), benefiting from the membrane pores formed in the gaps between the adjacent nanoparticles. Finally, we demonstrated the applications of the NBFP cavities in optical anti-counterfeiting and dynamic multi-color printing. These results suggest that our approach will help to realize a colorful, fast, and ultrahigh-resolution dynamic display device in optical security and colorimetric sensing.

Colors are carriers of information, and two-way structural colors of transmission and reflection can be used to convey significantly more information. Herein, using numerical analysis, we demonstrate metasurfaces capable of simultaneously transmitting and reflecting different colors. The low-loss hybrid Mg–TiO 2 structures and transparent substrate result high saturation and wide gamut transmitted colors and complementary reflected colors. Besides, the dynamic display is possible with the hydrogen-storage metal Mg. Through simulations, we studied the potential of the proposed metasurfaces for applications, such as nanoprintings and encrypted watermarks. We expect the results of this work to be applicable to double-sided displays, anti-counterfeiting, information coding, and high-density optical data storage. • Hybrid Mg–TiO 2 metasurfaces can generate high saturation and wide gamut (much greater than sRGB) additive transmitted structural colors. • Low-loss hybrid Mg–TiO 2 metasurfaces can reflect subtractive colors and are potential for dual-side displays. • The hybrid Mg–TiO 2 metasurfaces are possible to achieve dynamic display based on the hydrogen-storage metal Mg, which can absorb hydrogen and subsequently undergoes a metal-to-dielectric transition to MgH 2. • The metasurfaces exhibit omnidirectional characteristic (tolerance of incident angle can up to ± 6 0 ∘ ) under s-polarization. • The principle of hybrid Mg–TiO 2 metasurfaces has wide applicability for other materials and shapes. Hydrogen detection is crucial for the forthcoming hydrogen economy. Here, we present a visual, ultrasensitive, optical hydrogen sensor based on a tunable Fabry-Pérot (FP) resonator, which can fully release the volume expansion of palladium during hydrogenation and transfer this volume expansion into an optical signal. The FP resonator consists of a suspended polymethylmethacrylate/palladium (PMMA/Pd) bilayer on a gold (Au) square-hole array. The bottom of the gold square hole and hydrogen-sensitive PMMA/Pd bilayer form a dynamically tunable FP resonator. When hydrogen gas (H 2 ) is loaded, the hydrogen-induced lateral expanding stress concavely deforms the suspended bilayer downward to the substrate, narrowing the metal-air-metal gap at the center of the hole, and finally leading to a spectral blue shift. Our experimental results show a giant spectral shift of 279 nm with a reflectance variation of 57% on exposure to 0.6% H 2 mixed with air. Such an ultrahigh optical response results in a significant color change, enabling visual hydrogen detection. In addition, the sensor has a H 2 detection limit down to 0.1% and good recyclability. These advantages indicate that the sensor has excellent potential for hydrogen sensing applications.

Inspired by the principle of visual persistence, an innovated design method of preparing polymeric optical fiber jacquard fabric with a dynamic pattern display is put forward. Polymer optical fibers (POFs) as weft threads are interwoven with warp threads on a jacquard loom to produce patterns on the surface of fabric. The application of the figured jacquard computer-aided design system in pattern design and multi-backed construction design makes it possible to create different patterns on the same fabric zone. As a result, designed POF jacquard fabrics are capable of displaying dynamic patterns with high brightness and resolution under circuit control. The fabric not only has a decorative effect just as traditional jacquard fabric, but also has a luminous effect, and can serve as fashionable clothes, portable electronic devices, house decorations, etc. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This article discusses problems in the management of library e-resources and attempts to identify potential solutions to the problems. By describing an e-resources enhancement project taken by Rutgers University Libraries, this article points to the importance of providing contextually rich metadata and reorganizing the accessibility of e-resources on a library's website. It introduces how this Rutgers project adopted the National Information Standards Organization Metasearch Initiative to support the identification of appropriate e-collections for metasearching. The outcomes of the project have facilitated a dynamic display of relevant e-resources to library users as an effective way of automatic access to library e-collections. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
