Search

Detecting or placing upper limits on spacetime variations of fundamental constants requires quantifying every potential source of uncertainty. We continue our previous study into the impact of continuum variations on measurements of the fine structure constant, here in the context of quasar absorption systems. An automated (hence objective and reproducible) continuum modelling method is reported in an accompanying paper. We apply the method to the $z_{abs}=1.7975$ absorption system towards the quasar PHL957. Multiple continuum fits are generated, and for each, we derive independent models of the system, each giving its own measurement of the fine structure constant $\alpha$. This process isolates and quantifies the error contribution associated with continuum placement uncertainty. This source of uncertainty, ignored in many previous measurements, arises in two ways: (i) slight local continuum tilt uncertainty generates small line shifts, and (ii) different continuum estimates produce slightly different kinematic structures in the absorption system model. Taking continuum placement uncertainty into account, the new PHL957 measurement we obtain is $\Delta\alpha/\alpha= -0.53^{+5.45}_{-5.51} \times 10^{-6}$. This measurement assumes terrestrial magnesium isotopic abundances. Recommendations are provided for future $\alpha$ measurements. Searches for variations of fundamental constants require a comprehensive understanding of measurement errors. This paper examines a source of error that is usually overlooked: the impact of continuum placement error. We investigate the problem using a high resolution, high signal to noise spectrum of the white dwarf G191$-$B2B. Narrow photospheric absorption lines allow us to search for new physics in the presence of a gravitational field approximately $10^4$ times that on Earth. Modelling photospheric lines requires knowing the underlying spectral continuum level. We describe the development of a fully automated, objective, and reproducible continuum estimation method. Measurements of the fine structure constant are produced using several continuum models. The results show that continuum placement variations result in small systematic shifts in the centroids of narrow photospheric absorption lines which impact significantly on fine structure constant measurements. This effect should therefore be included in the error budgets of future measurements. Our results suggest that continuum placement variations should be investigated in other contexts, including fine structure constant measurements in stars other than white dwarfs. The analysis presented here is based on NiV absorption lines in the photosphere of G191$-$B2B. Curiously, the inferred measurement of the fine structure constant obtained in this paper using NiV (the least negative of our measurements is $\Delta\alpha/\alpha = -1.462 \pm 1.121 \times 10^{-5}$) is inconsistent with the most recent previous G191$-$B2B photospheric measurement using FeV ($\Delta\alpha/\alpha = 6.36 \pm 0.35_{stat} \pm 1.84_{sys} \times 10^{-5}$). Given both measurements are derived from the same spectrum, we presume (but in this work are unable to check) that this 3.2$\sigma$ difference results from unknown laboratory wavelength systematics., Comment: Main paper comprises 11 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. 41 pages in total including appendices. We report unbiased AI measurements of the fine structure constant alpha in two proximate absorption regions in the spectrum of the quasar HE0515-4414. The data are high resolution, high signal to noise, and laser frequency comb calibrated, obtained using the ESPRESSO spectrograph on the VLT. The high quality of the data and proximity of the regions motivate a differential comparison, exploring the possibility of spatial variations of fundamental constants, as predicted in some theories. We show that if the magnesium isotopic relative abundances are terrestrial, the fine structure constants in these two systems differ at the 7-sigma level. A 3-sigma discrepancy between the two measurements persists even for the extreme non-terrestrial case of 100% ^{24}Mg, if shared by both systems. However, if Mg isotopic abundances take independent values in these two proximate systems, one terrestrial, the other with no heavy isotopes, both can be reconciled with a terrestrial alpha, and the discrepancy between the two measurements falls to 2-sigma. Searches for variations of fundamental constants require accurate measurement errors. There are several potential sources of errors and quantifying each one accurately is essential. This paper addresses one source of uncertainty relating to measuring the fine structure constant on white dwarf surfaces. Here we describe the development of a fully automated, objective, and reproducible continuum estimation method, based on fitting cubic splines to carefully selected data regions. Example fits to the Hubble Space Telescope spectrum of the white dwarf G191-B2B are given. We carry out measurements of the fine structure constant using two continuum models. The results show that continuum placement variations result in small systematic shifts in the centroids of narrow photospheric absorption lines which impact significantly on fine structure constant measurements. This effect must therefore be included in the overall error budget of future measurements. The high resolution spectrograph ESPRESSO on the VLT allows measurements of fundamental constants at unprecedented precision and hence enables tests for spacetime variations predicted by some theories. In a series of recent papers, we developed optimal analysis procedures that both exposes and eliminates the subjectivity and bias in previous quasar absorption system measurements. In this paper we analyse the ESPRESSO spectrum of the absorption system at z_{abs}=1.15 towards the quasar HE0515-4414. Our goal here is not to provide a new unbiased measurement of fine structure constant, alpha, in this system (that will be done separately). Rather, it is to carefully examine the impact of blinding procedures applied in the recent analysis of the same data by Murphy (2022) and prior to that, in several other analyses. To do this we use supercomputer Monte Carlo AI calculations to generate a large number of independently constructed models of the absorption complex. Each model is obtained using AI-VPFIT, with alpha fixed until a "final" model is obtained, at which point alpha is then released as a free parameter for one final optimisation. The results show that the "measured" value of alpha is systematically biased towards the initially-fixed value i.e. this process produces meaningless measurements. The implication is straightforward: to avoid bias, all future measurements must include alpha as a free parameter from the beginning of the modelling process., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, and 5 tables. The fine structure constant, $\alpha$, sets the strength of the electromagnetic force. The Standard Model of particle physics provides no explanation for its value, which could potentially vary. The wavelengths of stellar absorption lines depend on $\alpha$, but are subject to systematic effects owing to astrophysical processes in stellar atmospheres. We measured precise line wavelengths using 17 stars, selected to have almost identical atmospheric properties to those of the Sun (solar twins), which reduces those systematic effects. We found that $\alpha$ varies by $\lesssim$50 parts-per-billion (ppb) within 50 parsecs from Earth. Combining the results from all 17 stars provides an empirical, local reference for stellar measurements of $\alpha$ with an ensemble precision of 12 ppb., Comment: 33 pages, 6 figures. We identify Ba$^{4+}$ (Te-like) as a promising candidate for a high-accuracy optical clock. The lowest-lying electronic states are part of a $^3P_J$ fine structure manifold with anomalous energy ordering, being non-monotonic in $J$. We propose a clock based on the 338.8 THz electric quadrupole transition between the ground ($^3P_2$) and first-excited ($^3P_0$) electronic states. We perform relativistic many-body calculations to determine relevant properties of this ion. The lifetime of the excited clock state is found to be several seconds, accommodating low statistical uncertainty with a single ion for practical averaging times. The differential static scalar polarizability is found to be small and negative, providing suppressed sensitivity to blackbody radiation while simultaneously allowing cancellation of Stark and excess micromotion shifts. With the exception of Hg$^+$ and Yb$^+$, sensitivity to variation of the fine structure constant is greater than other optical clocks thus far demonstrated.

Using recently developed version of the configuration interaction method for atoms with open shells we calculate electron structure and spectroscopic properties of the mendelevium atom (Md, $Z=101$). These include energy levels, first and second ionisation potentials, electron affinity, hyperfine structure and electric dipole transition amplitudes between ground and low lying states of opposite parity. The accuracy of the calculations is controlled by performing similar calculations for lighter analog of mendelevium, thulium atom and comparing the results with experiment and other calculations. The calculations for Md are to address the lack of experimental data and help in planing and interpreting the measurements.

Black-body radiation (BBR) shifts of $^3\!P_0-^1\!S_0$ clock transition in divalent atoms Cd and Zn are evaluated using accurate relativistic many-body techniques of atomic structure. Static polarizabilities of the clock levels and relevant electric-dipole matrix elements are computed. We also present a comparative overview of the BBR shifts in optical clocks based on neutral divalent atoms trapped in optical lattices.

We calculate the spectrum and allowed E1 transitions of the superheavy element Og (Z=118). A combination of configuration interaction (CI) and perturbation theory (PT) is used (Dzuba \textit{et at.} Phys. Rev. A, \textbf{95}, 012503 (2017)). The spectrum of lighter analog Rn I is also calculated and compared to experiment with good agreement., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

Atomic spectra and other properties of superheavy element dubnium (Db, Z=105) are calculated using recently developed method combining configuration interaction with perturbation theory (the CIPT method, Dzuba et al, Phys. Rev. A, {\bf 95}, 012503 (2017)). These include energy levels for low-lying states of Db and Db~II, electric dipole transition amplitudes from the ground state of Db, isotope shift for these transitions and ionisation potential of Db. Similar calculations for Ta, which is lighter analog of Db, are performed to control the accuracy of the calculations.

We describe a broadly applicable experimental proposal to search for the violation of local Lorentz invariance (LLI) with atomic systems. The new scheme uses dynamic decoupling and can be implemented in current atomic clocks experiments, both with single ions and arrays of neutral atoms. Moreover, the scheme can be performed on systems with no optical transitions, and therefore it is also applicable to highly charged ions which exhibit particularly high sensitivity to Lorentz invariance violation. We show the results of an experiment measuring the expected signal of this proposal using a two-ion crystal of $^{88}$Sr$^+$ ions. We also carry out a systematic study of the sensitivity of highly charged ions to LLI to identify the best candidates for the LLI tests., Comment: 8 pages, two figures in main text, one figure in the supplementary material

Hot white dwarf stars are the ideal probe for a relationship between the fine-structure constant and strong gravitational fields, providing us with an opportunity for a direct observational test. We study a sample of hot white dwarf stars, combining far-UV spectroscopic observations, atomic physics, atmospheric modelling and fundamental physics, in the search for variation in the fine structure constant. This variation manifests as shifts in the observed wavelengths of absorption lines, such as quadruply ionized iron (FeV) and quadruply ionized nickel (NiV), when compared to laboratory wavelengths. Berengut et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 2013, 111, 010801) demonstrated the validity of such an analysis using high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) spectra of G191-B2B. We have made three important improvements by: (a) using three new independent sets of laboratory wavelengths, (b) analysing a sample of objects, and (c) improving the methodology by incorporating robust techniques from previous studies towards quasars (the Many Multiplet method). A successful detection would be the first direct measurement of a gravitational field effect on a bare constant of nature. We propose to search for axion dark matter via the oscillating electric dipole moments that axions induce in atoms and molecules. These moments are produced through the intrinsic oscillating electric dipole moments of nucleons and through the $P,T$-violating nucleon-nucleon interaction mediated by pion exchange, both of which arise due to the axion-gluon coupling, and also directly through the axion-electron interaction. We propose to search for scalar dark matter via its effects on the electromagnetic fine-structure constant and particle masses. Scalar dark matter that forms an oscillating classical field produces `slow' linear-in-time drifts and oscillating variations of the fundamental constants, while scalar dark matter that forms topological defects produces transient-in-time variations of the constants of Nature. These variations can be sought for with atomic clock, laser interferometer and pulsar timing measurements. We study a wide range of neutral atoms and ions suitable for ultra-precise atomic optical clocks with naturally suppressed black body radiation shift of clock transition frequency. Calculations show that scalar polarizabilities of clock states cancel each other for at least one order of magnitude for considered systems. Results for calculations of frequencies, quadrupole moments of the states, clock transition amplitudes and natural widths of upper clock states are presented.
