Oil spills represent a significant environmental challenge, requiring materials that are efficient, cost-effective, and reusable for oil–water separation. This study presents a scalable method for fabricating magnetic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microspheres using commercially available oil-based ferrofluid. The choice of ferrofluid simplifies synthesis by providing pre-dispersed superparamagnetic nanoparticles, ensuring compatibility with PDMS. The ferrofluid-PDMS mixture was emulsified in warm water containing a surfactant, stabilizing the microparticles during polymerization. The resulting microspheres were characterized by optical microscopy, and magnetic hysteresis measurements confirm that the microspheres are superparamagnetic. X-ray diffraction confirmed the ferrofluid had magnetite nanoparticles. Oil absorption tests revealed that the microspheres achieved an absorption capacity of up to 580% of their weight. Moreover, the microspheres retained nearly 90% of their original absorption capacity after 10 reuse cycles, demonstrating excellent durability and reusability. This approach combines simplicity, scalability, and cost-efficiency while achieving high performance in oil absorption and magnetic separability. By exploiting the compatibility of ferrofluid and PDMS, the study provides a practical and effective solution for environmental remediation. These microspheres offer an attractive alternative to traditional methods, addressing the need for advanced materials that combine high efficiency with low operational costs and reusability.

O envelhecimento populacional aumentou a procura por atividades para pessoas idosas, e os museus estão bem posicionados para responder a essa demanda. Conhecer os idosos quanto às vivências em museus, interesses e motivações permitirá construir proposições museográficas de relacionamento mais assertivas para o potencial público de pessoas idosas, ou seja, os visitantes e não visitantes. O objetivo deste artigo foi conhecer as pessoas idosas visitantes de museus, quanto a características sociodemográficas, motivacionais, experiências pregressas e atuais nos museus, além de percepções de participação e emoções na experiência museográfica. O questionário foi aplicado em 24 museus brasileiros a 1.387 visitantes. A análise estatística descritiva apurou que a maioria da amostra é composta por mulheres com escolaridade superior ao ensino médio e bastante diversa quanto ao arranjo de moradia e renda. Os entrevistados vão com as famílias ou em grupos de convivência. Os principais interesses e experiências procuradas dentro dos museus são os objetos, além de aprender coisas novas, passear e conviver com outras pessoas. A alegria, satisfação e as curiosidades são as emoções mais sentidas. Mais da metade dos idosos acreditam poder contribuir com os museus, compartilhando memórias e ensinando coisas que sabem fazer. Cerca de 90% da amostra declarou não ser pessoa com deficiência e dizem não sentir falta de nenhum recurso de acessibilidade. Os museus têm o potencial para trabalhar todos os níveis de autonomia das pessoas idosas, desde que se enquadrem como ambientes amigáveis para todas as idades. Os dados são coerentes com a literatura apresentada na revisão de escopo produzida.

Background: Myosin 1g (Myo1g) has recently been identified as a potential diagnostic biomarker in childhood acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). Case report: We describe the case of a 1-year-old Mexican female patient. Although initially studied for hepatomegaly, an infectious or genetic etiology was excluded. Liver biopsy showed infiltration by neoplastic B-cell precursors (BCPs), and bone marrow (BM) aspirate showed 14.5% of BCPs. In a joint session of the oncology, hematology, and pathology departments, low-risk (LR) BCP-ALL of hepatic origin with aberrant myeloid markers was diagnosed. Although treatment was initiated, the patient presented early with BM relapse. Modest overexpression of Myo1g was observed from the onset. However, at the end of the steroid window, expression increased significantly and remained elevated during this first relapse to BM. The parents refused hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, but she continued chemotherapy. After a second BM relapse at 5 years of age, the phenotype switched to myeloid. Her parents then opted for palliative care, and the patient died two months later at home. Conclusions: This case shows the potential use of Myo1g in clinical practice as a high-risk indicator. Myo1g monitoring may reveal a high risk and relapse trend, even when typical parameter values are not altered: Myo1g could be used to classify patients from low to high risk from diagnosis, allowing patients to promptly receive the best treatment and potentially modifying prognosis and survival.

The physiological and anatomical clinical characteristics of pregnant women make them susceptible to complications caused by coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Increased coagulation and risk of thromboembolic phenomena are common during pregnancy; they are further enhanced when associated with a thrombogenic pathology such as in COVID-19. The treatment of COVID-19 is controversial and limited, even for non-pregnant patients. During pregnancy, the options are even more restricted due to the teratogenicity of some drugs and anatomical and physiological difficulties, especially in advanced pregnancy in patients with respiratory failure. Therefore, the focus of treatment for pregnant patients should be centered on isolation, monitoring fetal and maternal vital signs, uterine activity, and general maternal-fetal well-being. The prescription of drugs and management orientation should be based on gestational age and maternal clinical conditions. The optimal type of delivery is guided by obstetric indications and COVID-19 disease severity. Breastfeeding should be encouraged with the use of masks and hand hygiene. The treatment of pregnant women with COVID-19 brings important peculiarities that should be considered in order to make better decisions for preserving the health of the mother and fetus.

Rapidly ageing population increases the demand for activities with learning and social stimulation. Museums are well placed to provide such a function. Objective: How and in what form are museums engaging with older populations. The review will focus on three aspects: (1) Identifying the frameworks and tools being used by and in museums with older people. (2) Assess variables used in research and in areas that supports knowledge creation. (3) Identify evidence in relation to the interactions between museums and older audiences. A review of 8 databases and 2 university repositories (English and Portuguese language). The search retrieved 810 potential sources (2002-2020), 39 sources met the inclusion criteria. They focused on the educational aspects of museums and were produced by disciplines like psychology and gerontology, museology, arts and education. Museums play an important role on health (emphasis on psychological and physical wellbeing), socialization (discussing stereotypes, reducing isolation, redefining social roles), socioeconomic aspects (with local focus on services, partnerships) and on creative aging (promoting non-formal education with lifelong learning at different levels).

O estudo visa destacar as contribuições das ligas acadêmicas na extensão universitária. Trata-se de um estudo exploratório-descritivo, com abordagem qualitativa,-março a maio de 2017. Os dados foram coletados em três grupos focais (A, B e C) por meio de um roteiro norteador e analisados mediante a análise temática de Minayo. A pesquisa foi aprovada pelo Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa da referida universidade obtendo o Parecer n° 1.345.575. Este estudo comprova que as ligas contribuem para o fortalecimento do ensino, da pesquisa e da extensão. Além disso, os achados demonstram que os discentes são movidos a participar das ligas pelo desejo de ter outras experiências no campo da Enfermagem, inserção precoce no território, qualificação do currículo, e reforço no ensino e aprendizagem. Também mostram que as ligas desenvolvem estratégias de ensino-aprendizagem, por exemplo: formação teórica ou ciclo teórico, construção e desenvolvimento de eventos científicos, dentre outros. Assim, as ligas acadêmicas são potencialidades para a transformação do cenário de práticas de saúde, mediadas por ações de ensino, pesquisa, extensão, assistência e transformação social.

Abstract First-order reversal curve diagrams, or FORC diagrams, have been studied to determine if the widths of their distributions along the interaction and coercivity axes can be related to the mean-field magnetization dependent interaction field (MDIF). Arrays of nanowires with diameters ranging from 18 up to 100 nm and packing fractions varying from 0.4 to 12% have been analyzed. The mean-field MDIF has been measured using the remanence curves and used as a measuring scale on the FORC diagrams. Based on these measurements, the full width of the interaction field distribution and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the FORC distribution profile along the interaction field direction are shown to be proportional to the MDIF, and the relation between them is found. Moreover, by interpreting the full width of the coercive field distribution in terms of the dipolar induced shearing, a simple relation is found between the width of this distribution and the MDIF. Furthermore, we show that the width of the FORC distribution along the coercive field axis is equal to the width of the switching field distribution obtained by the derivation of the DC remanence curve. This was further verified with the switching field distribution determined using in-field magnetic force microscopy (MFM) for very low density nanowires. The results are further supported by the good agreement found between the experiments and the values calculated using the mean-field model, which provides analytical expressions for both FORC distributions.

Fundamento: Las enfermedades cardiovasculares representan la principal causa de muerte en el mundo; específicamente, la muerte súbita cardiovascular ocasiona el 50 % de todas las muertes por esta causa.Objetivo: describir la correlación entre variables sociodemográficas y factores de riesgo en la muerte súbita cardiovascular.Métodos: se realizó un estudio descriptivo, correlacional y transversal, en el municipio habanero de Arroyo Naranjo, entre los años 2007 y 2014. Fueron incluidos todos los casos de muerte súbita cardiovascular, atendidos en el Hospital Clínico-Quirúrgico Docente Julio Trigo López (N=605). Se analizaron variables sociodemográficas y factores de riesgo. Se utilizó la prueba estadística Chi Cuadrado y el modelo de los Residuos Corregidos de Haberman.Resultados: en los hombres, sobre todo en los de piel negra y mestizos, los factores de riesgo más frecuentes fueron el tabaquismo, el consumo de alcohol y la hipertensión arterial. Las mujeres se caracterizaron por más inactividad física, y estuvieron más afectadas por diabetes, dislipidemias y valores elevados de hematocritos. La mayoría de los fallecidos no rebasaban la educación secundaria, técnico medio u obrero calificado.Conclusión: la muerte súbita cardiovascular, en el municipio de Arroyo Naranjo, de La Habana, afecta fundamentalmente a personas mayores de 50 años, periodo de la vida en que factores de riesgo como la hipertensión arterial, el tabaquismo y la inactividad física son los de mayor impacto en la mortalidad.

The open-source modeling framework MAgPIE (Model of Agricultural Production and its Impact on the Environment) combines economic and biophysical approaches to simulate spatially explicit global scenarios of land use within the 21st century and the respective interactions with the environment. Besides various other projects, it was used to simulate marker scenarios of the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) and contributed substantially to multiple IPCC assessments. However, with growing scope and detail, the non-linear model has become increasingly complex, computationally intensive and non-transparent, requiring structured approaches to improve the development and evaluation of the model.Here, we provide an overview on version 4 of MAgPIE and how it addresses these issues of increasing complexity using new technical features: modular structure with exchangeable module implementations, flexible spatial resolution, in-code documentation, automatized code checking, model/output evaluation and open accessibility. Application examples provide insights into model evaluation, modular flexibility and region-specific analysis approaches. While this paper is focused on the general framework as such, the publication is accompanied by a detailed model documentation describing contents and equations, and by model evaluation documents giving insights into model performance for a broad range of variables.With the open-source release of the MAgPIE 4 framework, we hope to contribute to more transparent, reproducible and collaborative research in the field. Due to its modularity and spatial flexibility, it should provide a basis for a broad range of land-related research with economic or biophysical, global or regional focus.

The potential use of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) in biomedicine as magnetic resonance, drug delivery, imagenology, hyperthermia, biosensors, and biological separation has been studied in different laboratories. One of the challenges on MNP elaboration for biological applications is the size, biocompatibility, heat efficiency, stabilization in physiological conditions, and surface coating. Magnetoliposome (ML), a lipid bilayer of phospholipids encapsulating MNPs, is a system used to reduce toxicity. Encapsulated MNPs can be used as a potential drug and a gene delivery system, and in the presence of magnetic fields, MLs can be accumulated in a target tissue by a strong gradient magnetic field. Here, we present a study of the effects of DC magnetic fields on encapsulated MNPs inside liposomes. Despite their widespread applications in biotechnology and environmental, biomedical, and materials science, the effects of magnetic fields on MLs are unclear. We use a modified coprecipitation method to synthesize superparamagnetic nanoparticles (SNPs) in aqueous solutions. The SNPs are encapsulated inside phospholipid liposomes to study the interaction between phospholipids and SNPs. Material characterization of SNPs reveals round-shaped nanoparticles with an average size of 12 nm, mainly magnetite. MLs were prepared by the rehydration method. After formation, we found two types of MLs: one type is tense with SNPs encapsulated and the other is a floppy vesicle that does not show the presence of SNPs. To study the response of MLs to an applied DC magnetic field, we used a homemade chamber. Digitalized images show encapsulated SNPs assembled in chain formation when a DC magnetic field is applied. When the magnetic field is switched off, it completely disperses SNPs. Floppy MLs deform along the direction of the external applied magnetic field. Solving the relevant magnetostatic equations, we present a theoretical model to explain the ML deformations by analyzing the forces exerted by the magnetic field over the surface of the spheroidal liposome. Tangential magnetic forces acting on the ML surface result in a press force deforming MLs. The type of deformations will depend on the magnetic properties of the mediums inside and outside the MLs. The model predicts a coexistence region of oblate–prolate deformation in the zone where χ = 1. We can understand the chain formation in terms of a dipole–dipole interaction of SNP.

Goal: This research aims to examine the trade-off behaviour between productivity, quality and maintenance performance and evaluate the efficiency of the framework integrated to a time variability in operational management. Design / Methodology / Approach: The proposed framework integrates a stochastic analysis of process and TVM to manage process variability and analyse the trade-off behaviour between quality, productivity, and maintenance efficiency. The framework generates a control chart for each workstation and analyses the operator's time to execute an assembly process for six workstations. The processes are characterised and evaluated via stochastic simulation, resulting in a trade-off analysis with a multicriteria approach. Results: A relational graphic of performance dimensions shows that productivity and maintenance performance have a high dependency on time variability management, whereas quality has a minor impact over trade-off decisions. The proposed framework has a huge significance to operational management which allow to apply complex models to time variability analysis and organisation performance. Limitations of the investigation: The trade-off analysis in this study is limited to a constant trade-off model to validate the framework. Practical implications: This framework, used in association with traditional management philosophies, is a powerful tool that permits managers to develop a trade-off analysis and make decisions on workstations. Thus, a research field that correlates time variability with performance dimensions may be validated by this framework. Originality / Value: A framework that allows the use of MCDM to analyse the trade-off behaviour on organization performance and a trade-off analysis between performance dimensions and time variability management in operational performance.

Due to its high incidence, the dramatics which accompanies its presentation and because it is an important cause of potentially lost years of life, sudden death represents a challenge at present. The complexity of its physio-pathologic elements, and the diversity of the population groups in which it takes place demand a cross-discipline study. It is necessary to abandon positions and trends which center cardiovascular sudden death in a single medical specialty, mainly with regards to its causes, since it is an entity which requires an integrated vision from the different specialties and levels of attention.

Regarding apparel targeted at the vegan audience, there are various synthetic alternatives to materials of animal origin that fulfill the practical, aesthetic and/or symbolic function. This study is a preliminary, exploratory, bibliographical investigation about some of the most notable conceptual and practical issues on the topic – from the practical, aesthetic, philosophical, sociological and ethical viewpoints – an on the idea of imitation, emulation and copying of materials of animal origin in vegans' clothing, in order to provide clarification to the fields of fashion design, veganism and, consequently, animal rights.

Abstract Mangroves are ecosystems located in the transition zone between land and sea, characterized by periodic flooding that confer to its unique characteristics. Little is known about the transformation of nutrients that occur during the organic matter degradation in this system. In this study, we monitor the nitrogen transformations in soils from three mangroves with distinct levels of contamination using labeled 15NO3-. We also screened the mangroves metagenomes for the presence of genes that encode enzymes involved in denitrification (nirS, nirK, nosZ, norB and narG), anaerobic oxidation of ammonia (anammox) (hh, hao and hzo) and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) (nrfA). The transformations of 15NO3- indicated the balance of denitrification over anammox and DNRA in all three mangroves, with lower rates of processes in the mangrove affected by oil contamination. The metagenomic analysis detected 56 sequences related to denitrification, 19 with anammox and 6 with DNRA. Genes related with denitrification were phylogenetically distributed among several groups of bacteria (mainly Gammaproteobacteria). Anammox and DNRA related sequences were affiliated with Planctomycetes and Gammaproteobacteria, respectively. Thus, metagenomic and functional approaches supported the description of denitrification, anammox and DNRA rates in mangrove soils, and identified the major bacterial groups involved in these processes.

Hyperspectral imaging near infrared (HSI-NIR) has the potential to be used as a non-destructive approach for the analysis of new microbiological matrices of agriculture interest. This article describes a new method for accurately and rapidly classifying the etiological agents Colletotrichum gossypii (CG) and C. gossypii var. cephalosporioides (CGC) grown in a culture medium, using scattering reflectance HSI-NIR and multivariate pattern recognition analysis. Five strains of CG and 46 strains of CGC were used. CG and CGC strains were grown on Czapek-agar medium at 25 °C under a 12-hour photoperiod for 15 days. Molecular identification was performed as a reference for the CG and CGC classes by polymerase chain reaction of the intergenic spacer region of rDNA. The scattering coefficient µs and the absorption coefficient µa were obtained, which resulted in a µs value for CG of 1.37 × 1019 and for CGC of 5.83 × 10–11. These results showed that the use of the standard normal variate was no longer essential and reduced the spectral range from 1000–2500 nm to 1000–1381 nm. The results evidenced two type II errors for the CG 457-2 and CGC 39 samples in the soft independent modelling model of the analogy model. There were no classification errors using the algorithm of the successive projections for variable selection in linear discriminant analysis (SPA-LDA). A parallel validation of the results obtained with SPA-LDA was performed using a box plot analysis with the 11 variables selected by SPA, in which there were no outliers for the HSI-NIR models. The new HSI-NIR and SPA-LDA procedures for the classification of CG and CGC etiological agents are noted for their greater analytical speed, accuracy, simplicity, lower cost and non-destructive nature.

Given the challenge posed by cardiovascular sudden death to healthcare systems worldwide, it is very important a multi- and interdisciplinary approach that integrates allmedical and non-medical aspects involved in its assistance. After analyzing the results of the epidemiological research carried out in Cuba over 20 years by the Research Group on Sudden Death, which highlight the importance of this health problem because of its high incidence and its economic, family and social impact, future projections of this working group in addressing this disease were defined. The aim of this article is to describe these projections in order to achieve a better care for these patients. Projections include: better competence and performance in their knowledge and actions, and reaching a consensus to establish a universal definition for its study, diagnosis, and recording of statistical data. The scientific exchange among the various specialties and working groups involved in its medical care is essential to face its high incidence and to generate joint strategies to lessen its impact.

Introduction Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease that is caused by Mycobacterium leprae. The objective of this study was to evaluate the risk factors that are associated with neural alterations and physical disabilities in leprosy patients at the time of diagnosis. Methods A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted on 155 leprosy patients who participated in a program that aimed to eliminate leprosy from São Luis, State of Maranhão. Results Patients who were 31-45 years of age, were older than 60 years of age or had a partner were more likely to have a disability. Patients with partners were 1.14 times more likely (p = 0.025) to have disabilities of the hands. The frequency of disabilities in the feet among the patients with different clinical forms of leprosy was statistically significant. Conclusions The identification of risk factors that are associated with neural alterations and physical disabilities in leprosy patients is important for diagnosing the disease because this approach enables physicians to plan and prioritize actions for the treatment and monitoring of patients.

A condutividade elétrica de CeO2-10 mol% Gd2O3 co-dopado com x mol% de Sm2O3 (0 < x < 2) foi investigada. O aumento da concentração total de dopantes com a co-dopagem não promoveu variação significativa do parâmetro de rede e do tamanho médio de grão. A adição de até 1,0% em mol de co-dopante favoreceu a condutividade elétrica do grão e acima deste teor ocorreu decréscimo, apesar de o parâmetro de rede e o tamanho médio de grão se manterem constantes. A condutividade elétrica do contorno de grão teve um aumento sistemático com a adição do co-dopante, indicando a influência da co-dopagem na camada de carga espacial.
