Abstract

A new experimental apparatus, designed principally for a high sensitivity search for nu( --> mu(tau) oscillation, has been successfully constructed and made operational by the CHORUS Collaboration for the CERN-WA95 experiment. It consists of a large emulsion target, a scintillating fiber tracker system with optoelectronics read-out, an air-core magnet, a set of trigger hodoscopes, a calorimeter based on the lead/scintillating-fiber technique, and a muon spectrometer. The design, construction and performance of the entire apparatus and of the different detectors are described.

4. Activation of recA protein. The open helix model for LexA cleavage

Abstract

RecA protein is induced by the binding of DNA and ATP to become active in the hydrolysis of ATP and the cleavage of repressors. These reactions appear to depend on the structural state of the protein polymerized along the DNA, i.e. a helical coat of six RecA per turn of 95 to 100 A pitch. In support of this model of the active conformation, it was shown that high concentrations of salt also induce this helical polymerized state as well as the enzymatic activities. Here, we describe that, in vitro and with the non-hydrolyzable analogue ATP gamma S, RNA and heparin can also induce both the structural transition and the enzymatic activation of RecA to LexA cleavage in accordance with the model. RNA and heparin do not support the reaction in the presence of ATP, and they do not induce the hydrolysis of ATP either, suggesting that, in contrast to ATP gamma S, the nucleotide is not bound stably enough, and that the combined affinities of polynucleotide and ATP actually modulate the discrimination of RecA for the various possible inducers in vivo.

Abstract

The complex of recA protein with single-stranded DNA in the presence of ATP is the active species in the three enzymatic activities of recA: the initiation of strand exchange, the hydrolysis of ATP and the cleavage of repressors. Here we find by cryo-electron microscopy of unstained and unfixed samples that the helical structure of the protein coat in this complex differs slightly but significantly from the structure in the complex with double-stranded DNA. We discuss how the larger pitch of the complex with single strands (100 +/- 2 A compared with 95 +/- 2 A with double strands) could contribute to its higher enzymatic activity.

Abstract

RecA complexes on DNA and self-polymers were analysed by small-angle neutron scattering in solution. By Guinier analysis at small angles and by model analysis of a subsidiary peak at wider angles, we find that the filaments fall into two groups: the DNA complex in the presence of ATP gamma S, an open helix with pitch 95 A, a cross-sectional radius of gyration of 33 A and a mass per length of about six RecA units per turn, which corresponds to the state of active enzyme; and the compact form (bound to single-stranded DNA in the absence of ATP, or binding ATP gamma S in the absence of DNA, or just the protein on its own), a helical structure with pitch 70 A, cross-sectional radius of gyration 40 A and mass per length about five RecA units per turn, which corresponds to the conditions of inactive enzyme. The results are discussed in the perspective of unifying previous conflicting structural results obtained by electron microscopy.

Abstract

The CHARM II Collaboration is building a massive, fine-grained and low-density detector for the study of neutrino-electron scattering. Its target calorimeter consists of 441 detector planes with 155 232 plastic streamer tubes with digital readout of the wires and analog readout of external pickup strips. At the time of this report, about 25% of the calorimeter planes were equipped with electronics. Results on the performance of these tubes are presented as obtained with cosmic-rays and with electron and pion beams. We have also investigated the use of water vapour as an additive to the gas to suppress coating of the anode wires. The use of water would be of particular importance when using the tubes in a high-rate environment.

Abstract

Two structures have been proposed for supercoiled DNA: it is idealized either as a toroidal ring or as a rod of two interwound duplex chains. The latter model is the most widely depicted but the evidence remains controversial. We have worked with monomers and dimers of two plasmids, pUC8 and pKS414, of similar size and natural superhelical density. pKS414 contains a bend promoting sequence whereas pUC8 does not. In concentrated solutions these plasmids form a partially ordered liquid crystalline phase which is found, using neutron diffraction, to consist of a hexagonally packed assembly of parallel rod-like particles. This shape strongly suggests an interwound conformation for which some structural parameters are deduced. The mass/unit length obtained by combining the area of the hexagonal lattice and the concentration is approximately 3.6 times that of linear DNA. This implies a shallow superhelical pitch angle approximately 36 degrees which, when combined with the known number of supercoil turns, yields the pitch approximately 360 A and radius approximately 80 A for the supercoil. Oriented X-ray fibre diffraction patterns at 92% relative humidity indicate a B type duplex structure. Abstract

Annealing of single-stranded (ss) DNA rings of complementary base sequence gives rise to the so-called form V DNA which is characterized by a linking number of zero1. The similarity of the circular dichroism spectrum of form V DNA1 with that of the 1:1 mixture of the low salt (B-type) and the high salt (Z-type) form of poly(dG-dC) ⋅ poly(dG-dC)2,3 suggests that form V DNA might contain left-handed double-helical DNA of the Z-type. The discovery that the left-handed Z-form of poly(dG-dC) ṁ poly(dG-dC) induces a strong immune response4,5 has provided a novel means of searching for DNA of this particular conformation6. We therefore used antisera and monoclonal antibodies to Z-DNA to determine whether form V DNA contains stretches of left-handed double-helical conformation. We report here that form V DNA competes in the binding of antibodies to Z-form poly(dG-dC) · poly(dG-dC). The competition by form V DNA is similar to that of (dG-dC)5·(dG-dC)5. Thus, DNA of natural base sequence, when forced to adopt left-handed conformations by topological restrictions, is recognized by antibodies against Z-DNA

Abstract

The final version of the European hybrid spectrometer (EHS) is described. EHS was used in the NA27 experiment to study charm particles produced in View the MathML source interactions. A rapid cycling, high resolution bubble chamber (LEBC) produced bubbles of 17 μm diameter which were measured with a precision of 2.5 μm. Short-lived charm particles are observed with an efficiency up to 90% (D±). The spectrometer accepts 70% of all particles produced, including approximately 100% of those in the forward hemisphere and the momenta of charged particles are measured to better than 1% over the whole momentum range. The charged particle identification detectors give information on 84% of the spectrometer tracks, half of which obtain unique identification. Two lead glass detectors measure the energy of electromagnetic showers such that the π0 mass distribution has a fwhm of View the MathML source. Hadronic showers are measured with two iron/scintillator calorimeters. The mass resolutions are 3.0, 0.9 and 11 View the MathML source for K0, Λ0 and D− charged particles respectively. The D0 mass is measured to be (1865.1 ± 1.8 ± 0.8) View the MathML source.

Abstract

The WA95/CHORUS experiment at CERN is a dedicated nu(mu)-nu(tau) oscillation search experiment. Using the wide band neutrino beam of the CERN-SPS accelerator, with an exposure of 2.4 X 10(19) protons on the target, this experiment will explore the domain of small mixing angles down to sin(2) 2 theta(mu tau) approximate to 3 X 10(-4) for mass differences Delta m(2) > 1 eV(2), more than one order of magnitude better than the current limits. The conceptual design of the CHORUS experiment and data on the detector performances are reported.

Abstract

A new search for decays of heavy isosinglet neutrinos produced by neutral-current neutrino interactions in the CERN wide-band neutrino beam has been conducted by the CHARM-II Collaboration. We searched for heavy neutrinos created by scattering muon neutrinos on nucleons and decaying into μ + μ − ν μ . Production and decay of heavy neutrinos would appear as double events in the detector. Each double event candidate was tested wheather the measured quantities are compatible with the kinematics of this process. No event passed this test. The analysis is based on 2 × 10 7 neutral-current neutrino events collected from 1987–1991. The experiment is sensitive to heavy neutrinos in the mass range 0.3–2.4 GeV/ c 2 . The best limit for the mixing parameter is | U μi | 2 −5 for a mass around 2 GeV/ c 2 . The analysis improve order of magnitude previous results derived from wide-band neutrino beam exposures of the CHARM detector.

Abstract

We report new constraints on the existence of additional Z bosons derived from neutrino-electron scattering data. The analysis is based on data taken by the CHARM II Collaboration during five years of exposure of the detector to the wide band neutrino beam at CERN. The limits on the mass of these new particles are evaluated in the framework of E 6 superstring-inspired theories and Left-Right symmetric models. Limits on the so-called Z 1 are also reported.

Abstract

The CHORUS Collaboration is presently building a new detector for the search of nu(mu)-nu(tau) oscillations on the CERN neutrino beam, this experiment being sensitive to a mixing angle an order of magnitude smaller than previous experiments. The basic components of the CHORUS ''hybrid'' detector are an active target made of nuclear emulsions (for the direct observation of the decay of tau-leptons), an air-core spectrometer with scintillating fiber tracking, a lead-scintillator (fibers and strips) calorimeter (with mu-tracking provided by planes of limited streamer tubes) and a muon spectrometer, consisting of iron toroids and drift chambers. We report here on the design of the calorimeter and on the tests performed on prototype modules.

Abstract

We are reporting the first experimental result of the coupling of the muon neutrino with the Z. This result is in good agreement with the average value of the coupling of the three neutrino families as derived from the invisible decay width of the Z. We also determined gντ assuming Nν=3.

Abstract

We built and tested on charged particle beams the high energy-resolution calorimeter for the CHORUS experiment, which searches for νμ-ντ oscillations in the CERN Wide Band Neutrino Beam. This calorimeter is longitudinally divided into three sectors: one electromagnetic and two hadronic. The first two upstream sectors are made of lead and plastic scintillating fibers in the volume ratio of 4 1 , and they represent the first large scale application of this technique for combined electromagnetic and hadronic calorimetry. The third sector is made of a sandwich of lead plates and scintillator strips and complements the measurement of the hadronic energy flow. In this paper, we briefly describe the calorimeter design and we show results on its response to electrons and pions, obtained from tests performed at the CERN SPS and PS. An energy resolution of σ(E)/E=(32.3±2.4)%/ E(GeV) + (1.4±0.7)% was achieved for pions, and σ(E)/E=(13.8±0.9)%/ E(GeV) + (−0.2±0.4)% for electrons.

Abstract

In the framework of the CHORUS experiment for the search of v μ ↔ v τ oscillations at CERN, we have built the high resolution calorimeter, intended for the measurement of the energy of hadronic showers produced in neutrino interactions. The calorimeter consists of three parts. The first two are made of lead and plastic scintillating fibers in the volume ratio 4 : 1, such as to achieve compensation. The third is a sandwich of lead plates and scintillator strips in the same volume ratio. The techniques used for the construction of the calorimeter are described, as well as its performance in shower and muon detection. We used electron, pion and muon beams in the energy range 2–100 GeV for this purpose.

Abstract

We report our final results from the analysis of the full high statistics sample of events of the reaction \imd\,\, collected with the \CHARMII{} detector in the CERN wide-band neutrino beam during the years 1988 to~1991. From a signal of 15,758 \pm 324 inverse muon decay events we derived, in the Born approximation, a value of (16.51 \pm 0.93) \times 10^{-42} \unit{cm}^2 \unit{GeV}^{-1} for the asymptotic cross section slope \sigma/E_\nu, in good agreement with the Standard Model prediction of 17.23 \times 10^{-42} \unit{cm}^2 \unit{GeV}^{-1}. The result constrains the scalar coupling of the electron and the muon to |\gLL{S}|^2 < 0.475\ \rm{at}\ 90\%\ \rm{CL}.

Abstract

A high resolution calorimeter has been built for CHORUS, an experiment which searches for nu(mu) --> nu(tau) oscillation in the CERN neutrino beam. Aim of the calorimeter is to measure the energy and direction of hadronic showers produced in interactions of the neutrinos in a nuclear emulsion target and to track through-going muons. It is a longitudinally segmented sampling device made of lead and scintillating fibers or strips. This detector has been exposed to beams of pions and electrons of defined momentum for calibration. The method used for energy calibration and results on the calorimeter performance are reported.

Abstract

We report new bounds on electromagnetic properties of the muon neutrino obtained from a study of neutrino-electron scattering. The results are based on the analysis of differential cross section data collected with the CHARM II detector. The 90% C.L. limit on the magnetic moment of the muon-neutrino mu(nu mu) < 3 . 10(-9) mu(B) confirms limits obtained at much lower energies. The limit on the anomalous charge radius of the muon neutrino \[r(2)]anom\ < 6.0 . 10(-33) cm(2) improves earlier results by nearly a factor three.

Abstract

The construction of modules and the assembly of the calorimeter for CHORUS, an experiment that searches for nu(mu) nu(tau) oscillation, have been completed. Within the experiment, the calorimeter is required to measure the energy of hadronic showers produced in neutrino interactions with a resolution of similar to 30%/root E(GeV). To achieve this performance, the technique, developed in recent years, of embedding scintillating fibers of 1 mm diameter into a lead matrix has been adopted for the most upstream part of the calorimeter. A more conventional system, of alternating layers of lead and scintillator strips, was used for the rest. Details of module construction as well as results obtained when modules were exposed to electron and muon beams are presented.

Abstract

The CHORUS Collaboration is presently building a new detector for the search of ν μ - ν τ oscillations in the CERN neutrino beam, the experiment being sensitive to a mixing angle an order of magnitude smaller than the present limit. The basic components of the CHORUS “hybrid” detector are an active target made of nuclear emulsions, an air core spectrometer with scintillating fiber tracking, a high resolution calorimeter and a muon spectrometer. An account is given here of the design of the 110-tons compensating calorimeter, made of 1 mm diameter scintillating fibers embedded in a lead matrix, and of the test results from the first modules produced.

Abstract

A search for upsilon(mu) --> upsilon(e) and ($) over bar upsilon(mu) --> ($) over bar upsilon(e) oscillations has been carried out with the CHARM LI detector exposed to the CERN wide band neutrino beam. The data were collected over five years, alternating beams mainly composed of muon-neutrinos and muon-antineutrinos. The number of interactions of upsilon(e) and ($) over bar upsilon(e) observed is comparable with the number of events expected from flux calculations. For large squared mass differences the upper limits obtained on the mixing angle are sin(2)2 theta < 9.4.10(-3) for upsilon(mu) oscillating to upsilon(e) and sin(2)2 theta < 4.8.10(-3) for ($) over bar upsilon(mu) to ($) over bar upsilon(e) at the 90% confidence level. Combining neutrino and antineutrino data the upper limit is 5.6.10(-3).

Abstract

A b s t r a c t We report final results on electroweak parameters from muon-neutrino electron scattering o b s e r v e d in the C H A R M II detector from 1987 till 1991. In total 2677 + 82 and 2752 ± 88 neutrino-electron scattering events have been d e t e c t e d in the v and ~ - b e a m , respectively. From the ratio o f differential cross sections we obtain for the electroweak mixing angle sin 2 ®,,, = 0.2324 4- 0.0083. From the absolute neutrino-electron scattering event rate w e d e t e r m i n e d the effective vector and axial-vector neutral current coupling constants to be g~," = - 0 . 0 3 5 4- 0.017 and g~" = - 0 . 5 0 3 -~ 0.017.

Abstract

New results on inverse muon decay and coherent charged pion production by neutrinos are presented. The data come from the CHARM-II neutrino detector operated at the CERN wide-band neutrino beam. High-statistics data samples of 14500 inverse muon decay events and 3500 νμe elastic scattering events allow the determination of the electroweak parameters from the ratio of the cross-sections of neutral-to-charged-current neutrino electron scattering. The best fit values of the electroweak mixing angle sin 2 Ω w and the relative coupling strength ϱ of neutral and charged current are: sin 2 Ω w = 0.237 ± 0.014 and ϱ = 0.987 ± 0.042 . In the second topic, coherent single charged pion production was measured in neutrino and antineutrino beams. The measured cross-sections, averaged over the wide-band beam spectra and the glass target nuclei composition, are: σ(νμA → μ−π+A) = (51 ± 10) × 10−40 cm2 nucleus and σ( ν μ A → μ + π − A) = (43 ± 9) × 10 −40 cm 2 nucleus. The energy dependence shows the expected flattering of the cross-sections at high energy.

Abstract

We are reporting on a determination of neutral current coupling constants from a study of differential cross sections of muon-(anti)neutrino electron scattering. The results were obtained with the CHARM-II detector which was exposed to the CERN wide band neutrino beam in the years 1987 to 1991. A total of about 3000 ve and 3000 v e scattering events were observed. We present a preliminary value of sin2φw determined with the ratio of neutrino and antineutrino electron scattering cross-sections, based on the full data sample, and we give a determination of the effective vector and axial-vector neutral current coupling constants and the first measurement of the shape of the y-distributions based on 80% of the total statistics.

Abstract

The fine granularity of the CHARM-II detector has been exploited to search, in the CERN-SPS wide band neutrino beam, for quasi-elastic nu(tau) interactions followed by the decay tau --> pinu(tau). Since the sampling thickness of the target calorimeter corresponds to approximately 1/9 of an interaction length, these events appear in the detector as a single track followed by a hadronic shower. The study of the ''single pion'' events is used to set limits on the nu(mu) --> nu(tau) oscillation parameters. The maximum sensitivity to the mixing angle theta is reached for DELTAm2 = 50 eV2 allowing to exclude values of sin2 20 greater than 6.4 x 10(-3) at 90% CL.

Abstract

We report on a measurement of coherent single charged pion production in neutrino-nucleus scattering. The analysis is based on data taken with the CHARM II detector in beams of muon-neutrinos and -antineutrinos. The event numbers amount to N(μ−π) = 748 and N(μ+π) = 631. Cross sections and their dependence on the neutrino energy are determined. The results are in agreement with the predictions of models based on the PCAC hypothesis.

Abstract

The neutrino detector CHARM-II at CERN, consisting of a large target calorimeter equipped with streamer tubes and a muon spectrometer, has been exposed to a test beam of electrons, pions and muons with momenta between 2 and 60 GeV/c in order to study the digital response of the streamer tubes, the analog response of the pickup strips and the momentum resolution of the muon spectrometer. Methods have been developed to carry the calibration results in space from the impact point of the test beam to the bulk of the detector and in time from the test beam period to all the data taking periods between 1987 and 1991, The number of hits along muon tracks was used to parametrize the dependence on fluctuations of temperature, tube voltage and gas composition. Curves and formulae are presented showing the energy response and the energy resolution for the different beam particles. The test beam data have been used to optimize and calibrate algorithms for the kinematical reconstruction of electron showers and for their extraction from the vast background of hadronic showers.

Abstract

We report on a study of the differential cross section dσ/dy for the processes of elastic νμ- and ν μ - electron scattering. The data on which this analysis is based were recorded between 1987 and 1990 with the CHARM II detector in the wide band neutrino beam at the CERN-SPS. For the first time the shapes of these y-distributions have been determined in a model-independent way. A fit to the data yields for the squares of the neutral coupling constants the ratio gR2/gL2=0.60 ± 0.19 (stat.) ± 0.09 (syst.).

Abstract

Abstract

A fast and effective algorithm for electromagnetic and hadronic shower separation has been developed for the digital sampling calorimeter of the CHARM II experiment. It is based on a generalization of the minimal spanning tree concept and can be easily applied to other existing calorimeters. In this particular application, which requires the highest efficiency for retaining electromagnetic showers, one gets, for 99% efficiency, a rejection factor of the order of 100 for hadronic showers.

Abstract

We report on experimental results obtained with the neutrino target calorimeter of the CHARM II detector. The experiment is being performed at CERN and its aim is to measure sin2θw, the electroweak mixing parameter, via the study of neutrino-electron scattering. The detector, installed on the SPS neutrino wide-band beam line, consists of a glass calorimeter instrumented with plastic streamer tubes and scintillation counters, and of a muon spectrometer. The performance of the calorimeter has been explored during a test run with electron and pion beams. Results concerning the detector response, the energy and angular resolution, and the e π separation are presented here.

Abstract

We are reporting on a new determination of sin2ϑw from the ratio of v μ e to v e scattering cross sections. A new detector designed for this purpose was exposed tothe Wide Band Neutrino Beamof the 450 GeV (CERN SPS. An analysis of data taken in 1987 and 1988 is presented based on 762 vμe and 1017 v e events. From the ratio of σ( v μ e ) to σ( v μ e ) we determined sin2ϑw=0.233±0.012 (stat) ± 0.008 (syst) without radiative correction. With radiative correction for mt=mH=100 GeV we find sin2ϑw=0.232±0.012(stat)±0.008(syst).

The CHARM II Collaboration has built a massive, fine-grained calorimeter for the study of the elastic scattering {A figure is presented} short description of the detector will be followed by the presentation of some results obtained by exposing 40 of the 441 planes of the calorimeter to a beam of electrons and pions. Comments will be given about the conditioning procedure followed for the 154560 limited streamer tubes which compose the active part of the calorimeter.

Abstract

We report on the design and performance of the lead-scintillating fiber calorimeter of the CHORUS experiment, which searches for νμ-ντ oscillations in the CERN Wide Band Neutrino beam. Two of the three sectors in which the calorimeter is divided are made of lead and plastic scintillating fibers, and they represent the first large scale application of this technique for combined electromagnetic and hadronic calorimetry. The third sector is built using the sandwich technique with lead plates and scintillator strips and acts as a tail catcher for the hadronic energy flow. From tests performed at the CERN SPS and PS an energy resolution of σ ( E ) / E = ( 32.3 ± 2.4 ) % / E ( GeV ) + ( 1.4 ± 0.7 ) % was measured for pions, and σ ( E ) / E = ( 13.8 ± 0.9 ) % / E ( GeV ) + ( − 0.2 ± 0.4 ) % for electrons.

Abstract

We report on determinations of the neutral current coupling constants of the electron from the study of muon neutrino and antineutrino scattering off electrons. The results were obtained with the CHARM II detector which was exposed to the CERN wide band neutrino beam during the years 1987 to 1991. We present the determination of g V and g A from the measurement of νμ e and ν̄μ e cross sections with 80% of the data and a preliminary result for sin2θ w from the ratio of νμ e and v̄μ e cross sections, using the full data sample. We furthermore give results from the comparison of neutrino electron scattering with inverse muon decay and present the first measurement of the y‐distributions for νμ e and ν̄μ e scattering. The agreement between our results and those from the measurements at LEP demonstrates the validity of the Standard Model over a range in momentum transfer which spans six orders of magnitude.

Abstract

When recA protein is enzymatically inactive in vitro, it adopts a more compact helical polymer form than that of the active protein polymerized onto DNA in the presence of ATP. Here we describe some aspects of this structure. By cryo-electron microscopy, a pitch of 76 A is found for both the self-polymer and the inactive complex with ssDNA. A smaller pitch of 64 A is observed in conventional electron micrographs. The contour length of complexes with ssDNA was used to estimate the binding stoichiometry in the compact complex, 6 +/- 1 nt/recA. In addition, the compact structure was observed in vivo in Escherichia coli: inclusion bodies produced upon induction of recA expression in an overproducing strain have a fibrous morphology with the structural parameters of the compact polymer.

Abstract

RecA protein is induced by the binding of DNA and ATP to become active in the hydrolysis of ATP and the cleavage of repressors. These reactions appear to depend on the structural state of the protein polymerized along the DNA, i.e. a helical coat of six RecA per turn of 95 to 100 A pitch. In support of this model of the active conformation, it was shown that high concentrations of salt also induce this helical polymerized state as well as the enzymatic activities. Here, we describe that, in vitro and with the non-hydrolyzable analogue ATP gamma S, RNA and heparin can also induce both the structural transition and the enzymatic activation of RecA to LexA cleavage in accordance with the model. RNA and heparin do not support the reaction in the presence of ATP, and they do not induce the hydrolysis of ATP either, suggesting that, in contrast to ATP gamma S, the nucleotide is not bound stably enough, and that the combined affinities of polynucleotide and ATP actually modulate the discrimination of RecA for the various possible inducers in vivo.

Abstract

The complex of recA protein with single-stranded DNA in the presence of ATP is the active species in the three enzymatic activities of recA: the initiation of strand exchange, the hydrolysis of ATP and the cleavage of repressors. Here we find by cryo-electron microscopy of unstained and unfixed samples that the helical structure of the protein coat in this complex differs slightly but significantly from the structure in the complex with double-stranded DNA. We discuss how the larger pitch of the complex with single strands (100 +/- 2 A compared with 95 +/- 2 A with double strands) could contribute to its higher enzymatic activity.

Abstract

We present an electron microscopy study on the polymerization state of recA in the absence of DNA. In solution recA exists as monomers, small complexes not clearly longer than wide (approximately 9-18 nm), and filaments (diameter approximately 11 nm and variable lengths). We have attempted to quantify the relative amounts of these species by length measurements of the particles on electron micrographs. The percentages of each of these types was found to depend on recA concentration, temperature and presence in the incubation mixture of Mg2+, ATP gamma S, salt or D2O. These additives do not have an absolute effect on polymerization but rather shift the polymerization equilibrium of recA (which depends on recA concentration) up or down the concentration scale.
