Abstract

The present paper describes the construction, the installation and the operation of the Optical Imager Galileo (OIG), a scientific instrument dedicated to the 'imaging' in the visible. OIG was the first instrument installed on the focal plane of the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG) and it has been extensively used for the functional verification of several parts of the telescope (as an example the optical quality, the rejection of spurious light, the active optics and the tracking), in the same way also several parts of the TNG informatics system (instrument commanding, telemetry and data archiving) have been verified making extensive use of OIG. This paper provides also a frame of work for a further development of the imaging dedicated instrumentation inside TNG. OIG, coupled with the first near-IR camera (ARNICA), has been the 'workhorse instrument' during the first period of telescope experimental and scientific scheduling.

2. Do We Need Routine Postoperative Prophylactic Oral Antibiotics in Elective Foot and Ankle Surgery?

Abstract

Background: Previous studies about antibiotic prophylaxis in foot and ankle surgery have focused on perioperative intravenous administration, with few studies reporting on the efficiency of postoperative oral antibiotics. The purpose of this study is to investigate differences in the rate of postoperative infection and wound complications between patients with and without postoperative oral antibiotics and to identify independent risk factors for these complications following foot and ankle surgeries. Methods: A retrospective review of all elective foot and ankle surgeries with at least a 6-month follow-up was performed over a 2-year time span. Patients were divided into 2 groups based on if they received postoperative oral antibiotics. We compared the rates of postoperative infections and wound complications between the 2 groups. The surgical site, the number of Current Procedural Terminology codes, and the number of surgical incisions were also noted. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to identify independent risk factors of postoperative infection and wound complications. Results: A total of 366 patients were included in this study—240 with antibiotics and 126 without antibiotics. There was no significant difference in the rates of postoperative infection and wound complications between the 2 groups. The rate of superficial infection, deep infection, and wound complications was 1.7%, 0.8%, and 5.8% in the antibiotic group vs 3.2%, 0.0%, and 4.0% in patients without antibiotics, respectively. Multivariable logistic regression analysis identified independent risk factors of postoperative infection and wound complications as follows: smoking (OR: 4.7), male (OR: 4.0), history of neoplasm (OR: 6.7), and multiple incisions (OR: 4.1). Conclusion: Our results suggest that routine postoperative prophylactic oral antibiotics are not needed following elective foot and ankle surgeries. However, certain risk factors may increase the risk for postoperative infection and wound complications in foot and ankle surgery. Level of Evidence: Level III, case-control study.

Abstract

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a next-generation ground-based observatory for gamma-ray astronomy at very high energies. The Large-Sized Telescope prototype (LST-1) is located at the CTA-North site, on the Canary Island of La Palma. LSTs are designed to provide optimal performance in the lowest part of the energy range covered by CTA, down to ≃20 GeV. LST-1 started performing astronomical observations in 2019 November, during its commissioning phase, and it has been taking data ever since. We present the first LST-1 observations of the Crab Nebula, the standard candle of very-high-energy gamma-ray astronomy, and use them, together with simulations, to assess the performance of the telescope. LST-1 has reached the expected performance during its commissioning period—only a minor adjustment of the preexisting simulations was needed to match the telescope’s behavior. The energy threshold at trigger level is around 20 GeV, rising to ≃30 GeV after data analysis. Performance parameters depend strongly on energy, and on the strength of the gamma-ray selection cuts in the analysis: angular resolution ranges from 0.°12–0.°40, and energy resolution from 15%–50%. Flux sensitivity is around 1.1% of the Crab Nebula flux above 250 GeV for a 50 hr observation (12% for 30 minutes). The spectral energy distribution (in the 0.03–30 TeV range) and the light curve obtained for the Crab Nebula agree with previous measurements, considering statistical and systematic uncertainties. A clear periodic signal is also detected from the pulsar at the center of the Nebula.

Abstract

Context. With an orbital distance comparable to that of Saturn in the solar system, β Pictoris b is the closest (semi-major axis ≃9 au) exoplanet that has been imaged to orbit a star. Thus it offers unique opportunities for detailed studies of its orbital, physical, and atmospheric properties, and of disk-planet interactions. With the exception of the discovery observations in 2003 with NaCo at the Very Large Telescope (VLT), all following astrometric measurements relative to β Pictoris have been obtained in the southwestern part of the orbit, which severely limits the determination of the planet’s orbital parameters. Aims. We aimed at further constraining β Pictoris b orbital properties using more data, and, in particular, data taken in the northeastern part of the orbit. Methods. We used SPHERE at the VLT to precisely monitor the orbital motion of beta β Pictoris b since first light of the instrument in 2014. Results. We were able to monitor the planet until November 2016, when its angular separation became too small (125 mas, i.e., 1.6 au) and prevented further detection. We redetected β Pictoris b on the northeast side of the disk at a separation of 139 mas and a PA of 30° in September 2018. The planetary orbit is now well constrained. With a semi-major axis (sma) of a = 9.0 ± 0.5 au (1σ), it definitely excludes previously reported possible long orbital periods, and excludes β Pictoris b as the origin of photometric variations that took place in 1981. We also refine the eccentricity and inclination of the planet. From an instrumental point of view, these data demonstrate that it is possible to detect, if they exist, young massive Jupiters that orbit at less than 2 au from a star that is 20 pc away.

Abstract

Very-high Energy (VHE) gamma-ray astroparticle physics is a relatively young field, and observations over the past decade have surprisingly revealed almost two hundred VHE emitters which appear to act as cosmic particle accelerators. These sources are an important component of the Universe, influencing the evolution of stars and galaxies. At the same time, they also act as a probe of physics in the most extreme environments known - such as in supernova explosions, and around or after the merging of black holes and neutron stars. However, the existing experiments have provided exciting glimpses, but often falling short of supplying the full answer. A deeper understanding of the TeV sky requires a significant improvement in sensitivity at TeV energies, a wider energy coverage from tens of GeV to hundreds of TeV and a much better angular and energy resolution with respect to the currently running facilities. The next generation gamma-ray observatory, the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO), is the answer to this need. In this talk I will present this upcoming observatory from its design to the construction, and its potential science exploitation. CTAO will allow the entire astronomical community to explore a new discovery space that will likely lead to paradigm-changing breakthroughs. In particular, CTA has an unprecedented sensitivity to short (sub-minute) timescale phenomena, placing it as a key instrument in the future of multi-messenger and multi-wavelength time domain astronomy. Abstract

We report on the first detection of very high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission from the Crab Nebula by a Cherenkov telescope in dual-mirror Schwarzschild-Couder (SC) configuration. The result has been achieved by means of the 4 m size ASTRI-Horn telescope, operated on Mt. Etna (Italy) and developed in the context of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory preparatory phase. The dual-mirror SC design is aplanatic and characterized by a small plate scale, allowing us to implement large field of view cameras with small-size pixel sensors and a high compactness. The curved focal plane of the ASTRI camera is covered by silicon photo-multipliers (SiPMs), managed by an unconventional front-end electronics based on a customized peak-sensing detector mode. The system includes internal and external calibration systems, hardware and software for control and acquisition, and the complete data archiving and processing chain. The observations of the Crab Nebula were carried out in December 2018, during the telescope verification phase, for a total observation time (after data selection) of 24.4 h, equally divided into on- and off-axis source exposure. The camera system was still under commissioning and its functionality was not yet completely exploited. Furthermore, due to recent eruptions of the Etna Volcano, the mirror reflection efficiency was reduced. Nevertheless, the observations led to the detection of the source with a statistical significance of 5.4 sigma above an energy threshold of ~3 TeV. This result provides an important step towards the use of dual-mirror systems in Cherenkov gamma-ray astronomy. Abstract

The construction of the BEaTriX facility is ongoing at INAF/OAB. The facility will generate a broad (170 x 60 mm2), uniform and lowdivergent (1.5 arcsec HEW) X-ray beam within a small lab (~ 9 x 18m2, see Fig. 7), using an X-ray microfocus source, a paraboloidal mirror, a crystal monochromation system with simmetrically cut crystals, and an asymmetrically-cut crystal for beam expansion. The facility is designed to operate at 1.49 keV and 4.51 keV. These properties, in addition to the copious flux of the source (1011-1012 ph/sec/sterad), a moderate vacum level of 10-3 mbar, and a modular vacuum approach, will enable the testing of the Silicon Pore Optics modules of the ATHENA telescope at the rate of 3 MM/day, following production.

Abstract

GJ758 B is a brown dwarf companion to a nearby (15.76 pc) solar-type, metal-rich (M/H = +0.2 dex) main-sequence star (G9V) that was discovered with Subaru/HiCIAO in 2009. From previous studies, it has drawn attention as being the coldest (~600K) companion ever directly imaged around a neighboring star. We present new high-contrast data obtained during the commissioning of the SPHERE instrument at the VLT. The data was obtained in Y-, J-, H-, and Ks-bands with the dual-band imaging (DBI) mode of IRDIS, providing a broad coverage of the full near-infrared (near-IR) range at higher contrast and better spectral sampling than previously reported. In this new set of high-quality data, we report the re-detection of the companion, as well as the first detection of a new candidate closer-in to the star. We use the new 8 photometric points for an extended comparison of GJ758 B with empirical objects and 4 families of atmospheric models. From comparison to empirical object, we estimate a T8 spectral type, but none of the comparison object can accurately represent the observed near-IR fluxes of GJ758 B. From comparison to atmospheric models, we attribute a Teff = 600K $\pm$ 100K, but we find that no atmospheric model can adequately fit all the fluxes of GJ758 B. The photometry of the new candidate companion is broadly consistent with L-type objects, but a second epoch with improved photometry is necessary to clarify its status. The new astrometry of GJ758 B shows a significant proper motion since the last epoch. We use this result to improve the determination of the orbital characteristics using two fitting approaches, Least-Square Monte Carlo and Markov Chain Monte Carlo. Finally, we analyze the sensitivity of our data to additional closer-in companions and reject the possibility of other massive brown dwarf companions down to 4-5 AU. [abridged], 20 pages, 15 figures. Abstract

The Euclid Near-Infrared Spectrometer (E-NIS) Instrument was conceived as the spectroscopic probe on-board the ESA Dark Energy Mission Euclid. Together with the Euclid Imaging Channel (EIC) in its Visible (VIS) and Near Infrared (NIP) declinations, NIS formed part of the Euclid Mission Concept derived in assessment phase and submitted to the Cosmic Vision Down-selection process from which emerged selected and with extremely high ranking. The Definition phase, started a few months ago, is currently examining a substantial re-arrangement of the payload configuration due to technical and programmatic aspects. This paper presents the general lines of the assessment phase payload concept on which the positive down-selection judgments have been based. © 2010 SPIE.

Abstract

An hexapod, or Stewart, platform consists essentially of two platforms and six extensible linear actuators (legs), each one connected to the platforms with a couple of universal joints, one at each end. Several applications have been developed involving such a contrivance and many control systems have been developed. In our case, an astronomical telescope secondary mirror is supported by a hexapod platform and it is complete with its own control system. It is actually functioning on the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (La Palma Island-Spain). The complete movement-position loop control involves a nonlinear equation system and the basic control algorithm is written using a numerical solution for this non-linear set. In order to permit a better real-time control of the optics, faster algorithms have been explored. Among those, a neural network approach has been studied. Comparison between numerical and neural network performances are reported.

14. [Effectiveness of the concentrator as a supply source in home oxygen therapy]

Abstract

The oxygen concentrator is an effective supply source in home oxygen-therapy (HO). In order to study the effectivity of the concentrator in HO, we visited at home 31 patients using the concentrator as the only oxygen supply source in the exit gas and counted the hours of concentrator usage. Only 13 concentrators (41.9%) supplied a percentage of oxygen higher than 87% at a flow of two liters per minute. In three cases (9.7%), sporadic control measures of the percentage of oxygen in the exit gas were being taken and only four patients (12.9%) said that these controls were made monthly. The concentrator did not supply the adequate percentage of oxygen in 12 out of the 29 patients correctly taking the HO, so the effectivity of the treatment can only be expected in 28.6% of studied cases. The concentrator operates well under ideal conditions, but potential breakdowns in standard conditions of use must be considered. The efficiency of the HO with concentrator in our environment is very low, but it can be improved with regular controls of the concentrators or the introduction of devices warning the patient when they detect a reduction of the percentage of oxygen in the exit gas.

Abstract

A therapeutic trial with mannose given intravenously as a 5% solution during 7 consecutive days (daily doses 12.5 g, 25 g and 50 g) was performed in a GPI deficient girl with nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia. The aim of the trial was to substitute glucose--the main red cells metabolic substrate--with mannose, since the glucose metabolism, due to the GPI deficiency, was significantly decreased. An initial good effect of treatment was disturbed with viral infection. No complications due to treatment with mannose were observed.

Abstract

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a new observatory for very high-energy (VHE) gamma rays. CTA has ambitions science goals, for which it is necessary to achieve full-sky coverage, to improve the sensitivity by about an order of magnitude, to span about four decades of energy, from a few tens of GeV to above 100 TeV with enhanced angular and energy resolutions over existing VHE gamma-ray observatories. An international collaboration has formed with more than 1000 members from 27 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and North and South America. In 2010 the CTA Consortium completed a Design Study and started a three-year Preparatory Phase which leads to production readiness of CTA in 2014. Abstract

Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy has had a major breakthrough with the impressive results obtained using systems of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy has a huge potential in astrophysics, particle physics and cosmology. CTA is an international initiative to build the next generation instrument, with a factor of 5-10 improvement in sensitivity in the 100 GeV-10 TeV range and the extension to energies well below 100 GeV and above 100 TeV. CTA will consist of two arrays (one in the north, one in the south) for full sky coverage and will be operated as open observatory. The design of CTA is based on currently available technology. Abstract

Objective: Non invasive ventilation (NIV) improves quality of life and extends survival in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients. However, few data exist about the factors related to survival. We intended to assess the predictive factors that influence survival in patients after NIV initiation., Methods: Patients who started NIV from 2000 to 2014 and were tolerant (compliance ≥ 4 hours) were included; demographic, disease related and respiratory variables at NIV initiation were analysed. Statistical analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier test and Cox proportional hazard models., Results: 213 patients were included with median survival from NIV initiation of 13.5 months. In univariate analysis, the identified risk factors for mortality were severity of bulbar involvement (HR 2), Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) % (HR 0.99) and ALSFRS-R (HR 0.97). Multivariate analysis showed that bulbar involvement (HR 1.92) and ALSFRS-R (HR 0.97) were independent predictive factors of survival in patients on NIV., Conclusions: In our study, the two prognostic factors in ALS patients following NIV were the severity of bulbar involvement and ALSFRS-R at the time on NIV initiation. A better assessment of bulbar involvement, including evaluation of the upper airway, and a careful titration on NIV are necessary to optimize treatment efficacy.

21. [Effectiveness of the concentrator as a supply source in home oxygen therapy].

Abstract

The oxygen concentrator is an effective supply source in home oxygen-therapy (HO). In order to study the effectivity of the concentrator in HO, we visited at home 31 patients using the concentrator as the only oxygen supply source in the exit gas and counted the hours of concentrator usage. Only 13 concentrators (41.9%) supplied a percentage of oxygen higher than 87% at a flow of two liters per minute. In three cases (9.7%), sporadic control measures of the percentage of oxygen in the exit gas were being taken and only four patients (12.9%) said that these controls were made monthly. The concentrator did not supply the adequate percentage of oxygen in 12 out of the 29 patients correctly taking the HO, so the effectivity of the treatment can only be expected in 28.6% of studied cases. The concentrator operates well under ideal conditions, but potential breakdowns in standard conditions of use must be considered. The efficiency of the HO with concentrator in our environment is very low, but it can be improved with regular controls of the concentrators or the introduction of devices warning the patient when they detect a reduction of the percentage of oxygen in the exit gas.

Abstract

A therapeutic trial with mannose given intravenously as a 5% solution during 7 consecutive days (daily doses 12.5 g, 25 g and 50 g) was performed in a GPI deficient girl with nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia. The aim of the trial was to substitute glucose--the main red cells metabolic substrate--with mannose, since the glucose metabolism, due to the GPI deficiency, was significantly decreased. An initial good effect of treatment was disturbed with viral infection. No complications due to treatment with mannose were observed.
