Abstract

Objectives To review which names are used to refer to Hypericum perforatum L. in health regulation and medicinal plant references, and the potential for ambiguity or imprecision. Key findings Structured searches of Kew's Medicinal Plant Names Services Resource, supplemented with other online bibliographic resources, found that the scientific name Hypericum perforatum L. is used consistently in the literature, but variation between subspecies is rarely considered by researchers. Research is still published using only the common name ‘St John's wort’ despite it being imprecise; at least 80 other common names are also used for this plant in multiple languages. Summary Ambiguous and alternative plant names can lead to ineffective regulation, misinterpretation of literature, substitution of raw material or the failure to locate all published research. Kew's Medicinal Plant Names Services (MPNS) maps all names used for each plant in medicinal plant references onto current taxonomy, thereby providing for disambiguation and comprehensive access to the regulations and references that cite that plant, regardless of the name used. MPNS also supplies the controlled vocabulary for plant names now required for compliance with a new standard (Identification of Medicinal Products, IDMP) adopted by medicines regulators worldwide.

Abstract

When publishing their research on natural products and traditional preparations from plants, authors need to use scientific plant names appropriately and unambiguously – both to ensure the scientific integrity of their research and to facilitate citation and recognition of their work. Whilst many papers follow best practice, including some in this issue (p. 623, p. 631), many others would have benefitted from improvements in their research procedures or the presentation of their results. Earlier authors have quantified the problems with plant names used in medicinal plant and nutritional science publications [1,2]. Here we highlight the most common mistakes that are made, giving a few examples, and offer advice on how best to approach the use of scientific plant names, in order that these mistakes can be avoided in future

Abstract

The occurrence of the cardiotoxin taxine (comprising taxine B and several other basic taxoids) in leaves of Taxus baccata L. (European yew) is well known and has led to public concerns about the safety of eating or drinking from utensils crafted from the wood of this poisonous species. The occurrence of basic taxoids in the heartwood of T. baccata had not been examined in detail, although the bark is known to contain 2′β-deacetoxyaustrospicatine. Initial examination of heartwood extracts for 2′β-deacetoxyaustrospicatine by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS) revealed the presence of this basic taxoid at about 0.0007% dry weight, using a standard isolated from bark. Analyses for taxine B, however, proved negative at the extract concentration analysed. Observing other basic taxoids within the heartwood extracts was facilitated by developing generic LC–MS methods that utilised a fragment arising from the N-containing acyl group of basic taxoids as a reporter ion. Of the various MS strategies available on a hybrid ion trap-orbitrap instrument that allowed observation of this reporter ion, combining all-ion collisions with high resolution ion filtering by the orbitrap was most effective, both in terms of the number of basic taxoids detected and sensitivity. Numerous basic taxoids, in addition to 2′β-deacetoxyaustrospicatine, were revealed by this method in heartwood extracts of T. baccata. Red wine readily extracted the basic taxoids from heartwood while coffee extracted them less efficiently. Contamination with basic taxoids could also be detected in soft cheese that had been spread onto wood. The generic LC–MS method for detecting basic taxoids complements specific methods for detecting taxine B when investigating yew poisoning cases in which the analysis of complex extracts may be required or taxine B has not been detected.

Abstract

Primula obconica, a member of the Primulaceae family, was introduced to Britain from China in 1880. P. obconica cultivars, which are reputed to contain less primin, have been developed over the past number of years in an attempt to reduce the incidence of allergic contact dermatitis. Primin (2-methoxy-6-pentyl-1,4-benzoquinone) is the main sensitizer, although other allergens have been postulated. We believe the incidence of primula allergic contact dermatitis has fallen since the introduction of primin-free P. obconica into the European market and thus the aims of this study were twofold. First, to determine whether the incidence of primula allergic contact dermatitis was truly on the decline and, second, to confirm the presence of primin-free P. obconica in the UK. We surveyed the incidence of primula allergic contact dermatitis in the UK and compared the incidence in the period between 1995 and 2000 with a subsequent follow-up study looking at the incidence for 2002. The results showed a significant fall in primin-positive patch tests from 1995 to 2000. The follow-up results for 2002 showed a further reduction in the number of primin-positive patch tests. The yearly incidence of contact allergy to primin has fallen from 0.785% in 1995/1996 to 0.429% in 2002. This downward trend was statistically significant (P = 0.001). A telephone survey of UK seed suppliers and selected plant retailers was also undertaken to clarify what types of P. obconica were available for sale and to assess suppliers' and retailers' knowledge of the primin-free varieties. This survey showed that 50% of suppliers were selling primin-free varieties but that the majority of surveyed retailers were not currently selling any variety of P. obconica. Our study suggests that although the yearly incidence of contact allergy to primin has fallen significantly over the past 8 years, it is still an important allergen, and thus its inclusion in the standard series remains justified for the foreseeable future.

Abstract

A method is described for the analysis of taxine alkaloids by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. It is applicable to the detection of taxine alkaloids in the stomach contents of horses in which Taxus poisoning is suspected. Analysis of a leaf extract of Taxus baccata revealed unreported alkaloids of the same relative molecular mass as taxine B and isotaxine B.

Abstract

A strong increase of the mean transverse momentum [p(t)] with the number of charged particles n(ch) is observed in e+e- annihilations into hadrons at LEP energies, The effect resembles correlations observed in hadron-hadron interactions. In e+e- annihilations the [p(t)] and n(ch) correlations can be accounted for by gluon radiation.

Abstract

We have searched for possible fourth family heavy neutrinos, pair produced in Z0 decays, in a sample of about 112 000 hadronic Z0 final states collected with the DELPHI detector. For all mixing matrix elements we exclude a new Dirac neutrino lighter than 44.5 GeV at a 95% confidence level, if the neutrino couples to the electron or muon family, and lighter than 44.0 GeV, if the neutrino couples to the tau family. Depending on the values of the mixing element and to which lepton family the neutrino couples, we obtain mass limits up to 46.2 GeV. For all mixing matrix elements we exclude a new Majorana neutrino lighter than 39.0 GeV, if it couples to the electron or the muon family, and lighter than 38.2 GeV, if it couples to the tau family. Depending on the values of the mixing matrix element and to which lepton family the neutrino couples, we obtain mass limits up to 44.7 GeV. We also exclude stable new Dirac neutrinos lighter than 45.0 GeV and new Majorana neutrinos lighter than 39.5 GeV.

Abstract

The weak mixing angle has been measured from the charge asymmetry of hadronic events with two different approaches using the DELPHI detector at LEP. Both methods are based on a momentum-weighted charge sum to determine the jet charge in both event hemispheres. In a data sample of 247 300 multihadronic Z0 decays a charge asymmetry of [Q(F)] - [Q(B)] = -0.0076 +/- 0.0012(stat.) +/- O.0005(exp. syst.) +/- 0.0014(frag.) and a raw forward-backward asymmetry of A(FB)raw = 0.0109 +/- 0.0020(stat.) +/- 0.0010(exp.syst.) +/- 0.0017(frag.) have been measured. This result corresponds to a value of sin2-theta(eff) = 0.2345 +/- 0.0030(exp.) +/- 0.0027(frag.) +/- sin2-theta(MSBAR) = 0.2341 +/- 0.0030(exp.) +/- 0.0027(frag.) and to sin2-theta(w) = 1 -m(w)2/m(z)2 = 0.2299 +/- 0.0030(exp.) +/- 0.0027(frag.) +/- 0.0028 (theor.). The experimental error is the quadratic sum of the statistical and the experimental systematic error and the theoretical error originates from a value of m(t) = 130 +/- 40 GeV/c2 and a range of m(H) from 45 GeV/c2 to 100 GeV/c2.

Abstract

In four-jet events from e+e- –> Z0 –> multihadrons one can separate the three principal contributions from the triple-gluon vertex, double gluon-bremsstrahlung and the secondary quark-antiquark production, using the shape of the two-dimensional angular distributions in the generalized Nachtmann-Reiter angle theta-NR* and the opening angle of the secondary jets. Thus one can identify directly the contribution from the triple-gluon vertex without comparison with a specific non-QCD model. Applying this new method to events taken with the DELPHI-detector we get for the ratio of the colour factor N(C) to the fermionic Casimir operator C(F): N(C)/C(F) = 2.55 +/- 0.55(stat.) +/- 0.4(fragm. + models) +/- 0.2(error in bias) in agreement with the value 2.25 expected in QCD from N(C) = 3 and C(F) = 4/3.

Abstract

Summary. Detailed morphological investigations have shown that the name Dendrobium purpureum Roxb. has been applied at various times to six distinct taxa: D. capituliflorum Rolfe, D. catillare Rchb. f., D. constrictum J. J. Sm., D. kraemeri Schltr., D. morrisonii Schltr. and D. purpureum Roxb. The name D. catillare has itself been misapplied to a species which is here described under the new name D. taveuniense. D. purpureum var. candidulum Rchb. f. is here raised to the level of subspecies. Each taxon is described and illustrated and a key is provided for their identification. Whilst revising section Pedilonum (Blume) Lindl. of the genus Dendrobium Sw., it has become apparent that the name Dendrobium purpureum Roxb. has been applied to material from Sulawesi to Samoa and from Palau to Vanuatu, which varies greatly in both floral and vegetative characters. The nature of this variation indicates that the name D. purpureum has been used for six distinct species. Detailed examination of type material has also shown that the name of one of these species, D. catillare Rchb. f., has itself been misapplied. A new species, D. taveuniense Dauncey & P. J. Cribb, is therefore described. The following account outlines the nomenclatural history, defines the species involved and shows how they differ from each other. The confusion between these seven species has several origins. The scarcity of material from the Moluccas, the type locality of D. purpureum, has led to a poor understanding of that species. Much of the synonymy has been proposed by botanists working on regional floras who did not have access to all type material and who had an incomplete understanding of the related species in other geo- graphical areas. The use of flower colour without reference to floral morphology has probably been a major cause of confusion. Finally, the vegetative morphology of the taxa is quite similar.
