Ionized nebulae provide critical insights into the conditions of the interstellar medium (ISM). Their bright emission lines enable the measurement of physical properties, such as the gas-phase metallicity, across galaxy disks and in distant galaxies. The PHANGS--MUSE survey has produced optical spectroscopic coverage of the central star-forming discs of 19 nearby main-sequence galaxies. Here, we use the H{\alpha} morphology from this data to identify 30,790 distinct nebulae, finding thousands of nebulae per galaxy. For each nebula, we extract emission line fluxes and, using diagnostic line ratios, identify the dominant excitation mechanism. A total of 23,244 nebulae (75%) are classified as HII regions. The dust attenuation of every nebulae is characterised via the Balmer decrement and we use existing environmental masks to identify their large scale galactic environment (centre, bar, arm, interarm and disc). Using strong-line prescriptions, we measure the gas-phase oxygen abundances (metallicity) and ionization parameter for all HII regions. With this new catalogue, we measure the radial metallicity gradients and explore second order metallicity variations within each galaxy. By quantifying the global scatter in metallicity per galaxy, we find a weak negative correlation with global star formation rate and stronger negative correlation with global gas velocity dispersion (in both ionized and molecular gas). Analyzing resolved stellar populations across the disk of a galaxy can provide unique insights into how that galaxy assembled its stellar mass over its lifetime. Previous work at ~1 kpc resolution has already revealed common features in the mass buildup (e.g., inside-out growth of galaxies). However, even at approximate kpc scales, the stellar populations are blurred between the different galactic morphological structures such as spiral arms, bars and bulges. Here we present a detailed analysis of the spatially resolved star formation histories (SFHs) of 19 PHANGS-MUSE galaxies, at a spatial resolution of ~100 pc. We show that our sample of local galaxies exhibits predominantly negative radial gradients of stellar age and [Z/H], consistent with previous findings, and a radial structure that is primarily consistent with local star formation, and indicative of inside-out formation. In barred galaxies, we find flatter [Z/H] gradients along the semi-major axis of the bar than along the semi-minor axis, as is expected from the radial mixing of material along the bar. In general, the derived assembly histories of the galaxies in our sample tell a consistent story of inside-out growth, where low-mass galaxies assembled the majority of their stellar mass later in cosmic history than high-mass galaxies. We also show how stellar populations of different ages exhibit different kinematics, with younger stellar populations having lower velocity dispersions than older stellar populations at similar galactocentric distances, which we interpret as an imprint of the progressive dynamical heating of stellar populations as they age. Finally, we explore how the time-averaged star formation rate evolves with time, and how it varies across galactic disks. One of the fundamental factors regulating the evolution of galaxies is stellar feedback. However, we still do not have strong observational constraints on the relative importance of the different feedback mechanisms (e.g. radiation, ionised gas pressure, stellar winds) in driving HII region evolution and molecular cloud disruption. In this letter, we constrain the relative importance of the various feedback mechanisms from young massive star populations by resolving HII regions across the disk of the nearby star-forming galaxy NGC 1672. We combine measurements of ionised gas nebular lines obtained by PHANGS-MUSE, with high-resolution imaging from the HST in both the narrow-band H{\alpha} and broad-band filters. We identify a sample of 40 isolated, compact HII regions in the HST H{\alpha} image, for which we measure the sizes that were previously unresolved in seeing-limited ground-based observations. Additionally, we identify the ionisation source(s) for each HII region from catalogues produced as part of the PHANGS-HST survey. We find that the HII regions investigated are mildly dominated by thermal or wind pressure, yet their elevation above the radiation pressure is within the expected uncertainty range. We see that radiation pressure provides a substantially higher contribution to the total pressure than previously found in the literature over similar size scales. In general, we find higher pressures within more compact HII regions, which is driven by the inherent size scaling relations of each pressure term, albeit with significant scatter introduced by the variation in the stellar population properties (e.g. luminosity, mass, age, metallicity). We have noticed an error in the radial metallicity gradient fits provided in Table 3 (Appendix C) of the published article. The columns that list the metallicity gradients have units of dex arcmin-1, rather than the noted dex kpc-1. In the following we provide a corrected version of the table. All figures in the published article are shown in units of R25, and are unchanged from the published version. The results and conclusions of the paper are not affected by this error.

Galaxy masses play a fundamental role in our understanding of structure formation models. This review addresses the variety and reliability of mass estimators that pertain to stars, gas, and dark matter. The different sections on masses from stellar populations, dynamical masses of gas-rich and gas-poor galaxies, with some attention paid to our Milky Way, and masses from weak and strong lensing methods, all provide review material on galaxy masses in a self-consistent manner., 145 pages, 28 figures, to appear in Reviews of Modern Physics. We present highest angular resolution (~ 1″ and 0.35″) mm-interferometric observations of the HCN(1-0), 12CO(1-0) and 12CO(2-1) line emission in the central 300 pc of the late-type spiral galaxy NGC 6946. The data, obtained with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI) shows for the first time a molecular gas spiral in the inner ~ 10″ (270 pc) with a large concentration of molecular gas ($M_{H_2} \sim\,1.6\times10^7\,M_{\odot}$) within the inner 60 pc, The gas distribution in the central 50 pc has been resolved and is consistent with a gas ring or spiral driven by a bar. Both the distribution of the molecular gas as well as its kinematics can be well explained by the influence of an inner stellar bar of about 400 pc length as tested via a qualitative model for the gas flow. NGC 6946 is a prime example of molecular gas kinematics being driven by a small-scale, secondary stellar bar.For the first time, it is possible to directly compare the location of (dense) giant molecular clouds with that of (optically) visible HII regions in space-based images. We use the 3 mm continuum and the HCN emission to estimate in the central 50 pc the star formation rates in young clusters that are still embedded in their parent clouds and hence are missed in optical and near-IR surveys of star formation. The amount of embedded star formation is about 1.6 times as high as that measured from HII regions alone, and appears roughly evenly split between ongoing dust-obscured star formation and very young giant molecular cloud cores that are just beginning to form stars. The build-up of central mass seems to have continued over the past ≥ 10 Myrs, to have occurred in an extended (albeit small) volume around the nucleus, and to be closely related to the presence of an inner bar.

Supermassive black holes are a key element in our understanding of how galaxies form. Most of the progress in this very active field of research is based on just ~30 determinations of black hole mass, accumulated over the past decade. International audience; We analyze the stellar kinematics of 39 dwarf early-type galaxies (dEs) in the Virgo Cluster. Based on the specific stellar angular momentum lambda(Re) and the ellipticity, we find 11 slow rotators and 28 fast rotators. The fast rotators in the outer parts of the Virgo Cluster rotate significantly faster than fast rotators in the inner parts of the cluster. Moreover, 10 out of the 11 slow rotators are located in the inner 3 degrees (D \textless 1 Mpc) of the cluster. The fast rotators contain subtle disk-like structures that are visible in high-pass filtered optical images, while the slow rotators do not exhibit these structures. In addition, two of the dEs have kinematically decoupled cores and four more have emission partially filling in the Balmer absorption lines. These properties suggest that Virgo Cluster dEs may have originated from late-type star-forming galaxies that were transformed by the environment after their infall into the cluster. The correlation between lambda(Re) and the clustercentric distance can be explained by a scenario where low luminosity star-forming galaxies fall into the cluster, their gas is rapidly removed by ram-pressure stripping, although some of it can be retained in their core, their star formation is quenched but their stellar kinematics are preserved. After a long time in the cluster and several passes through its center, the galaxies are heated up and transformed into slow rotating dEs.

We present high angular resolution ~1" and 0.6" mm-interferometric observations of the 12CO(1-0) and 12CO(2-1) line emission in the central 300pc of the late-type spiral galaxy NGC6946. The data, obtained with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI), allow the first detection of a molecular gas spiral in the inner ~10" (270pc) with a large concentration of molecular gas (M(H_2) ~1.6x10^7M_sun) within the inner 60pc. This nuclear clump shows evidence for a ring-like geometry with a radius of ~10pc as inferred from the p-v diagrams. Both the distribution of the molecular gas as well as its kinematics can be well explained by the influence of an inner stellar bar of about 400pc length. A qualitative model of the expected gas flow shows that streaming motions along the leading sides of this bar are a plausible explanation for the high nuclear gas density. Thus, NGC6946 is a prime example of molecular gas kinematics being driven by a small-scale, secondary stellar bar., U. In this paper, we present new results from an extensive set of Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and ground-based observations of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 2110. The HST data sets include Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) observations as well as the first high-spatial resolution spectroscopy ([O i], [N ii], Hα and [S ii] lines) of this galaxy obtained using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS). The ground-based data are three-dimensional (x, y, λ) spectrographic observations obtained using the integral field spectrograph OASIS on the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope, complemented by near-infrared long-slit spectroscopy obtained using NIRSPEC on the Keck–II telescope. The OASIS observations cover regions containing both stellar absorption lines and major optical emission lines. The NIRSPEC observations cover the H and K bands. Combined with archival HST observations, the WFPC2 data provide us with a high-spatial resolution extinction map. The OASIS data allowed bidimensional mapping of the stellar and gaseous kinematics, as well as of the spectral properties of the ionized gas. These results are compared to those obtained in the near-infrared with NIRSPEC/Keck. Last, we used the STIS data to probe the ionized gas kinematics and properties in the inner 4 arcsec along PA = 156° at unprecedented spatial resolution. Our two-dimensional (2D) map of the stellar velocity field and the near-infrared stellar velocity profile are symmetric about the nucleus, confirming the results of previous long-slit observations. The asymmetry of the velocity field of the ionized gas is present at the same level for visible and near-infrared lines, indicating this is not a reddening effect. Multiple Gaussian fitting of the emission-line profile allowed the contributions of the broad and a narrow components to be disentangled. The intensity peak of the [O iii] narrow component is located north of the nucleus, indicating that the bulk of the narrow [O iii] emission comes from the jet-like structure (Mulchaey et al.) and not from the nucleus itself. We suggest that the northern arm is the anomalous one, contrary to what has been claimed earlier. Last, we also show that the elongated region of high gas velocity dispersion located close to the nucleus and discovered by Gonzalez Delgado et al. is intrinsic to the narrow component.

We present SAURON integral-field observations of the S0 galaxy NGC7332. Existing broad-band ground-based and HST photometry reveals a double disk structure and a boxy bulge interpreted as a bar viewed close to edge-on. The SAURON two-dimensional stellar kinematic maps confirm the existence of the bar and inner disk but also uncover the presence of a cold counter-rotating stellar component within the central 250 pc. The Hbeta and [OIII] emission line maps show that the ionised gas has a complex morphology and kinematics, including both a component counter-rotating with respect to the stars and a fainter co-rotating one. Analysis of the absorption line-strength maps show that NGC7332 is young everywhere. The presence of a large-scale bar can explain most of those properties, but the fact that we see a significant amount of unsettled gas, together with a few peculiar features in the maps, suggest that NGC7332 is still evolving. Interactions as well as bar-driven processes must thus have played an important role in the formation and evolution of NGC7332, and presumably of S0 galaxies in general., 12 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present spatially resolved kinematics and global stellar populations and mass-to-light ratios for a sample of 39 dwarf early-type (dE) galaxies in the Virgo cluster studied as part of the SMAKCED stellar absorption-line spectroscopy and imaging survey. This sample is representative of the early-type population in the absolute magnitude range -19.0 < M_r < -16.0. For each dE, we measure the rotation curve and velocity dispersion profile and fit an analytic function to the rotation curve. We study the significance of the departure of the rotation curve from the best fit analytic function (poorly fit) and of the difference between the approaching and receding sides of the rotation curve (asymmetry). We find that 62 +/- 8 % (23 out of the 39) of the dEs have a significant anomaly in their rotation curve. Analysis of the images reveals photometric anomalies for most galaxies. However, there is no clear correlation between the significance of the photometric and kinematic anomalies. We measure age-sensitive and metallicity-sensitive Lick spectral indices and find a wide range of ages and metallicities. We also find that 4 dEs have emission partially filling in the Balmer absorption lines. Finally, we estimate the total masses and dark matter fractions of the dEs. They have a median total mass and dark matter fraction within the Re of log Me = 9.1 +/- 0.2 and f_DM = 46 +/- 18 %. We have carried out 1mm/3mm continuum and 12CO(2−1) line high resolution observations to identify the footprints of AGN feedback on 3C 236. The CO emission comes from a spatially resolved disk characterized by a regular rotating pattern. Within the limits imposed by the sensitivity and velocity coverage of our data, we do not detect any outflow signatures in the cold molecular gas. Re-inspection of optical and IR spectra, shows the presence of a previously unknown ionized gas outflow. The star-formation efficiency in 3C 236, is consistent with the value measured in normal galaxies, which follow the canonical Kennicutt-Schmidt law. This result, confirmed to hold in other young radio sources examined in this work, is in stark contrast with the factor of 10–50 lower SFE that has been claimed to characterize evolved powerful radio galaxies. The recent reactivation of the AGN in 3C 236 is a likely explanation for the early evolutionary status of its molecular disk.

The distribution of gas in the central kiloparsec of a galaxy has a dynamically rapid evolution. Nonaxisymmetries in the gravitational potential of the galactic disk, such as a large scale stellar bar or spiral, can lead to significant radial motion of gaseous material from larger radii to the central region. The large influx of gas and the subsequent star formation keep the central region constantly changing. However, the ability of gas to reach the nucleus proper to fuel an AGN phase is not guaranteed. Gas inflow can be halted at a circumnuclear star forming ring several hundred parsec away. The nearby galaxy NGC5248 is especially interesting in this sense since it is said to host 2 circumnuclear star forming rings at 100pc and 370pc from its quiescent nucleus. Here we present new subarcsecond PdBI+30m CO(2-1) emission line observations of the central region. For the first time the molecular gas distribution at the smallest stellar ring is resolved into a gas ring, consistent with the presence of a quiescent nucleus. However, the molecular gas shows no ring structure at the larger ring. We combine analyses of the gaseous and stellar content in the central kiloparsec of this galaxy to understand the gas distribution and dynamics of this star forming central region. We discuss the probability of two scenarios leading to the current observations, given our full understanding of this system, and discuss whether there are really two circumnuclear star forming rings in this galaxy., Accepted for publication in A&A, 14pages + long table

Excluding those unsettled systems undergoing mergers, bright galaxies come in two flavours: with and without discs. In this work we look for photometric evidence for presence of discs and compare it with kinematic results of the ATLAS3D survey (Cappellari et al. 2011). We fit a Sérsic (1968) function to azimuthally averaged light profiles of ATLAS3D galaxies to derive single component fits and, subsequently, we fit a combination of the Sérsic function (free index n) and an exponential function (n=1) with the purpose of decomposing the light profiles into “bulge” and “disc” components (B+D model) of all non-barred sample galaxies. We compare the residuals of the B+D models with those of the single Sérsic fits and select the B+D model as preferred only when the improvement is substantial and there are no correlations within residuals. We find that the high angular momentum objects (fast rotators) are disc dominated systems with bulges of typically low n (when their light profiles can be decomposed) or are best represented with a single Sérsic function with a low Sérsic index (n

Much progress has been made in recent years towards understanding how early-type galaxies (ETGs) form and evolve. SAURON (Bacon et al. 2001) integral-field spectroscopy from the ATLAS3D survey (Cappellari et al. 2011) has suggested that less massive ETGs are linked directly to spirals, whereas the most massive objects appear to form from a series of merging and accretion events (Cappellari et al. 2013). However, the ATLAS3D data typically only extends to about one half-light radius (or effective radius, Re), making it unclear if this picture is truly complete.

We conducted an observational program using the TIGER integral field spectrograph to study the dynamical structure of nearby galactic nuclei. We already obtained new original results on three of the best ”Black Holes Candidates”: M 32, M 31 and M 104. Their nuclei exhibit complex morphologies and unusual dynamical properties such as: asymmetries, anisotropy, triaxiality which would have been impossible to detect with a ”classical“ spectrograph.

Recently, massive early-type galaxies have shed their red-and-dead moniker, thanks to the discovery that many host residual star formation. As part of the ATLAS-3D project, we have conducted a complete, volume-limited survey of the molecular gas in 260 local early-type galaxies with the IRAM-30m telescope and the CARMA interferometer, in an attempt to understand the fuel powering this star formation. We find that around 22% of early-type galaxies in the local volume host molecular gas reservoirs. This detection rate is independent of galaxy luminosity and environment. Here we focus on how kinematic misalignment measurements and gas-to-dust ratios can be used to put constraints on the origin of the cold ISM in these systems. The origin of the cold ISM seems to depend strongly on environment, with misaligned, dust poor gas (indicative of externally acquired material) being common in the field but completely absent in rich groups and in the Virgo cluster. Very massive galaxies also appear to be devoid of accreted gas. This suggests that in the field mergers and/or cold gas accretion dominate the gas supply, while in clusters internal secular processes become more important. This implies that environment has a strong impact on the cold gas properties of ETGs.

NGC 1266 is a nearby field galaxy observed as part of the ATLAS3D survey (Cappellari et al. 2011). NGC 1266 has been shown to host a compact (< 200 pc) molecular disk and a mass-loaded molecular outflow driven by the AGN (Alatalo et al. 2011). Very Long Basline Array (VLBA) observations at 1.65 GHz revealed a compact (diameter < 1.2 pc), high bright- ness temperature continuum source most consistent with a low-level AGN origin. The VLBA continuum source is positioned at the center of the molecular disk and may be responsible for the expulsion of molecular gas in NGC 1266. Thus, the candidate AGN-driven molecular outflow in NGC 1266 supports the picture in which AGNs do play a significant role in the quenching of star formation and ultimately the evolution of the red sequence of galaxies., 2 pages, Proceedings from IAU Symposium 290: Feeding compact objects, Accretion on all scales

The mass assembly of galaxies leaves various imprints on their surroundings, such as shells, streams and tidal tails. The frequency and properties of these fine structures depend on the mechanism driving the mass assembly: e.g. a monolithic collapse, rapid cold-gas accretion followed by violent disk instabilities, minor mergers or major dry/wet mergers. Therefore, by studying the outskirts of galaxies, one can learn about their main formation mechanism. I present here our on-going work to characterize the outskirts of Early-Type Galaxies (ETGs), which are powerful probes at low redshift of the hierarchical mass assembly of galaxies. This work relies on ultra–deep optical images obtained at CFHT with the wide-field of view MegaCam camera of field and cluster ETGs obtained as part of the ATLAS3D and NGVS projects. State of the art numerical simulations are used to interpret the data. The images reveal a wealth of unknown faint structures at levels as faint as 29 mag arcsec−2 in the g-band. In this short paper, we present a few preliminary results from the ambitious ATLAS3D project, which intends to probe the first volume-limited sample of early-type galaxies observed via multi-band photometry, integral-field spectroscopy, radio and millimeter observations, and supported by a large library of numerical simulations and models. We more specifically address the existence of two main families of early-type galaxies, the slow and fast rotators. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.

Major and minor galaxy mergers form a large number of stellar substructures, ranging from kinematically decoupled cores in the central kpc to faint streams, shells, tails and rings in the far outer regions, as well as massive star clusters. We study the formation of these substructures using cosmological simulations with an efficient zoom‐in technique. We analyze in particular the evolution of substructures, their transient or long‐lived nature, and their survival to subsequent mergers. We also discuss which features can unambiguously probe past mergers, and which ones could have been produced by different evolutionary processes at high redshift. Faint stellar streams are found to be one of the most robust probes of past major and minor mergers. They can survive subsequent mergers, without having their morphological and photometrical properties dramatically modified. The numerous streams surrounding modern early‐type galaxies hence likely trace merger events, and constrain the past occurrence of major and minor mergers, including their age and orbit.

We study resolution effects in numerical simulations of gas-rich (20% of the total baryonic mass) major mergers, and show that the formation of slowly-rotating elliptical galaxies requires a resolution that is beyond the present-day standards to be properly modelled. Our findings show that a high-enough resolution is required to accurately model the global properties of merger remnants and the evolution of their angular momentum. The role of wet mergers of spiral galaxies in the formation of slow-rotating ellipticals may therefore have been underestimated. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.

We use the integral-field spectrograph SAURON to measure the stellar line-of-sight velocity distribution and absorption line strengths out to four effective radii (Re) in the early-type galaxies NGC 3379 and NGC 821. With our newly developed observing technique we can now probe these faint regions in galaxies that were previously not accessible with traditional long-slit spectroscopy. We make optimal use of the large field-of-view and high throughput of the spectrograph: by adding the signal of all ~1400 lenslets into one spectrum, we obtain sufficient signal-to-noise in a few hours of observing time to reliably measure the absorption line kinematics and line strengths out to large radius. We find that the line strength gradients previously observed within 1 Re remain constant out to at least 4 Re, which puts constraints on the merger histories of these galaxies. The stellar halo populations are old and metal-poor. By constructing orbit-based Schwarzschild dynamical models we find that dark matter is necessary to explain the observed kinematics in NGC 3379 and NGC 821, with 30 - 50 per cent of the total matter being dark within 4 Re. The radial anisotropy in our best-fit halo models is less than in our models without halo, due to differences in orbital structure. Massive star clusters observed in galaxy mergers are often suggested to be progenitors of globular clusters. To study this hypothesis, we performed the highest resolution simulation of a gas-rich galaxy merger so far. The formation of massive star clusters of 10^5 to 10^7 Mo, triggered by the galaxy interaction, is directly resolved in this model. We show that these clusters are tightly bound structures with little net rotation, due to evolve into compact long-lived stellar systems. Massive clusters formed in galaxy mergers are thus robust candidates for progenitors of long-lived globular clusters. The simulated cluster mass spectrum is consistent with theory and observations. Tidal dwarf galaxies of 10^8-9 Mo can form at the same time, and appear to be part of a different class of objects, being more extended and rotating., MNRAS letters accepted. Numerical simulations of galaxy mergers are a powerful tool to study these fundamental events in the hierarchical built-up of galaxies. Recent progress have been made owing to improved modeling, increased resolution and large statistical samples. We present here the highest-resolution models of mergers performed so far. The formation of a variety of substructures ranging from kinematically decoupled cores to globular-like clusters is directly resolved. In a resolution study, we show that the large-scale structure of elliptical-like merger remnants can be affected by the resolution, and a too modest resolution may affect the numerical predictions on the properties of major merger remnants: understanding precisely which kind of event or succession of events has formed the various types of elliptical galaxies remains an open challenge., Comment: To be published in the proceedings of the "Galactic and Stellar Dynamics 2008" conference. 4 pages

We analyse the orbital distribution of E and S0 galaxies using SAURON integral-field stellar kinematics. We construct the anisotropy (V/sigma,epsilon) diagram, for the 48 E/S0 galaxies from the SAURON survey. For a subsample of 24 galaxies consistent with axisymmetry, we use three-integral axisymmetric Schwarzschild dynamical models to recover the detailed orbital distribution and we find good agreement with the anisotropy derived from the (V/sigma,epsilon) diagram. In the companion Paper IX we show that the early-type galaxies can be subdivided into two classes of systems with or without a significant amount of specific stellar angular momentum. Here we show that the two classes have different distributions on the (V/sigma,epsilon) diagram. The slow rotators are more common among the most massive systems and are generally classified as E from photometry alone. We have used the new extended A configuration of the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer to study the dense molecular gas in the nucleus of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC6946 at unprecedented spatial resolution in the HCN(1-0) and CO(2-1) lines. The gas distribution in the central 50pc has been resolved and is consistent with a gas ring or spiral driven by the inner 400pc long stellar bar. For the first time, it is possible to directly compare the location of (dense) giant molecular clouds with that of (optically) visible HII regions in space-based images. We use the 3mm continuum and the HCN emission to estimate in the central 50pc the star formation rates in young clusters that are still embedded in their parent clouds and hence are missed in optical and near-IR surveys of star formation. The amount of embedded star formation is about 1.6 times as high as that measured from HII regions alone, and appears roughly evenly split between ongoing dust-obscured star formation and very young giant molecular cloud cores that are just beginning to form stars. The build-up of central mass seems to have continued over the past > 10 Myrs, to have occurred in an extended (albeit small) volume around the nucleus, and to be closely related to the presence of an inner bar., 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted for A&A Letters (PdBI special issue)

Our high resolution observations of the 12CO line emission in the central 300 pc of two late type galaxies IC 342 and NGC 6946 revealed the presence of abundant molecular material in the form of central gas disks with diameters of ∼ 30 pc. These nuclear gas disks appear to coincide with star formation at the very center. Analysis of the gas kinematic in the nuclear gas disk of IC 342 finds evidence for non‐circular motion. If interpreted as gas inflow to the center of IC342, crude estimates of the inflow rate are sufficiently high to replenish the fuel supply for future star formation events. We infer a gas inflow rate between 0.003 and 0.14 M ⊙yr−1, based on the observed surface density of the nuclear gas disk and estimates of the radial velocities of the surrounding gas. Inflow rates of this order can support repetitive star formation events in the nucleus of IC 342 on timescales much smaller than a Hubble time. We present observations of Titan taken on November 17, 2000, with the near-infrared spectro-imaging system OASIS, mounted downstream of the CFHT/PUEO adaptive optics system. We have spatially resolved Titan's disk at Greatest Eastern Elongation. Our spectra cover the 0.86– 1.02 μ m range with a spectral resolution of 1800. By studying Titan at these wavelengths, we have recovered several pieces of information on the vertical and latitudinal structure of the atmosphere and surface of the satellite. The observing conditions were sufficiently good (AO-corrected seeing of 0.34”) so as to allow us to separate the disk into 7 independent elements. From the flux contained in the 0.890 μ m methane band, we find that at higher altitudes on Titan, the North–South asymmetry is undergoing changes with respect to previous years when the South was much brighter than the North. This asymmetry still prevails in the troposphere, but at higher levels the well-known “Titan smile”—previously reported—disappears. We believe that we even have evidence for a reversal. The year 2000 may then represent the beginning of a seasonal change in Titan's haze distribution in the near-infrared, something which has been confirmed since but was not visible in the previous years. By comparing regions on Titan's disk with similar surface and stratospheric characteristics, we find an differences in the latitudinal distribution of the aerosol content in the intermediate altitude levels. Reflectivity measurements derived in the 0.94 μ m window (and hence pertaining to the surface conditions) show that the equatorial regions of the leading side are brighter than the surrounding areas, due to the presence of the large bright zone observed since 1994. Given our spatial resolution, we find this region to be 6% brighter than northern latitudes, 7% brighter than the South pole and in total we have a contrast of 9% between the darker and the brighter areas distinguishable on our images. The 0.94 μ m methane window yields a geometric albedo of about 0.26 for the bright center of Titan's disk. This region is affected by a strong H 2 O telluric absorption and therefore we could not derive any precise information on the surface composition from the original spectrum. We have, however, been able to correct for the telluric lines by using a stellar spectrum taken just before our Titan observations. We were then able to apply our radiative transfer code and after modeling surface albedo values of about 0.37 and 0.29 for the brightest and darkest areas respectively were found. We investigate possible surface components, compatible with our data, such as water ice, hydrocarbon liquid, tholin deposits or silicates.

We have used the SAURON panoramic integral field spectrograph to study the structure of the Ly-alpha emission-line halo, LAB1, surrounding the sub-millimeter galaxy SMM J221726+0013. This emission-line halo was discovered during a narrow-band imaging survey of the z=3.1 large-scale structure in the SSA22 region. Our observations trace the emission halo out to almost 100 kpc from the sub-millimeter source and identify two distinct Ly-alpha `mini-haloes' around the nearby Lyman-break galaxies. The main emission region has a broad line profile, with variations in the line profile seeming chaotic and lacking evidence for a coherent velocity structure. The data also suggests that Ly-alpha emission is suppressed around the sub-mm source. Interpretation of the line structure needs care because Ly-alpha may be resonantly scattered, leading to complex radiative transfer effects, and we suggest that the suppression in this region arises because of such effects. We compare the structure of the central emission-line halo with local counter-parts, and find that the emission line halo around NGC 1275 in the Perseus cluster may be a good local analogue, although the high redshift halo is factor of ~100 more luminous and appears to have higher velocity broadening. Around the Lyman-break galaxy C15, the emission line is narrower, and a clear shear in the emission wavelength is seen. A plausible explanation for the line profile is that the emission gas is expelled from C15 in a bipolar outflow, similar to that seen in M82., 7 pages, 5 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a summary of high-spatial resolution follow-up observations of the elliptical (E) and lenticular (S0) galaxies in the SAURON survey using the OASIS integral field spectrograph. The OASIS observations explore the central 8x10" regions of these galaxies using a spatial sampling four times higher than SAURON, often revealing previously undiscovered features. Around 75% (31/48) of the SAURON E/S0s with central velocity dispersion >= 120 km/s were observed with OASIS, covering well the original SAURON representative sample. We present here an overview of this follow-up survey, and some preliminary results on individual objects, including a previously unreported counter-rotating core in NGC 4382; the decoupled stellar and gas velocity fields of NGC 2768; and the strong age gradient towards the centre of NGC 3489., 4 pages, 5 figures. We present an interpretation of the stellar velocity dispersion drops discovered in the nuclear regions of three barred galaxy hosts of active/starburst galactic nuclei (NGC 1097, NGC 1808 and NGC 5728) by Emsellem et al. ([CITE]). Using self-consistent N -body simulations including stars, gas and star formation, we show that young stars born in the nuclear regions from dynamically cold gas have a lower velocity dispersion than the older stellar population. The young population (less than 0.9 Gyr old in our models), being more massive and brighter than the older one at near infrared wavelengths, fully dominates the observed line-of-sight kinematics of the circumnuclear regions.

In around ≈25% of early-type galaxies (ETGs) UV emission from young stellar populations is present. Molecular gas reservoirs have been detected in these systems (e.g. Young et al. (2011), providing the fuel for this residual star-formation. The environment in which this molecular gas is found is quite different than that in spiral galaxies however, with harsher radiation fields, deeper potentials and high metallicity and alpha-element abundances. Here we report on one element of our multi-faceted programme to understand the similarities and differences between the gas reservoirs in spirals and ETGs. We use spatially resolved observations from the CARMA mm-wave interferometer to investigate the size of the molecular reservoirs in the the CO-rich ATLAS3D ETGs (survey described in Alatalo et al. 2012, submitted). We find that the molecular gas extent is smaller in absolute terms in ETGs than in late-type galaxies, but that the size distributions are similar once scaled by the galaxies optical/stellar characteristic scale-lengths (Fig 1, left). Amongst ETGs, we find that the extent of the molecular gas is independent of the kinematic misalignment, despite the many reasons why misaligned gas might have a smaller extent. The extent of the molecular gas does depend on environment, with Virgo cluster ETGs having less extended molecular gas reservoirs (Fig 1, right). Whatever the cause, this further emphases that cluster ETGs follow different evolutionary pathways from those in the field. Full details of this work will be presented in Davis et al. We describe MIFS, a second generation integral-field spectrograph for the VLT, operating in the visible wavelength range. It combines a 1'x1' field of view with the improved spatial resolution provided by multi-conjugate adaptive optics and covers a large simultaneous spectral range (0.6-1.0 microns). A separate mode exploits the highest spatial resolution provided by adaptive optics. With this unique combination of capabilities, MIFS has a wide domain of application and a large discovery potential. The MIFS low-spatial resolution mode (sampled at 0.2") combined with the initial MCAO capabilities planned for the VLT will provide ultra-deep fields with a limiting magnitude for spectroscopy of R~28. MIFS will improve the present day detection limit of Lyman alpha emitters by a factor of 100, and will detect low-mass star-forming galaxies to z~7. The MIFS high-spatial resolution mode (3"x3" field sampled at 0.01") is optimized for the next step in (MC)AO. It will probe, e.g., the relationship between supermassive central black holes and their host galaxy and the physics of winds from accretion disks in young stellar objects at unprecedented spatial resolution. MIFS will extend Europe's lead in integral-field spectroscopy. It capitalizes on new developments in adaptive optics, and is a key step towards instrumentation for OWL.

This study is part of the ‘Dynamics of Embedded Bars and Connections with AGN’ (DEBCA) project whose main goal is to provide new insights on the fueling processes of AGN. For that purpose the DEBCA team plans to observe and compare to numerical simulations a sample of 12 galaxies: Seyfert (1 or 2) or not, with or without double-bars. Fueling the central activity of AGN is a long-standing dilemma. Various ‘fueling engines’ have been proposed so far: e.g. nuclear bars nested in large-scale bars, or nuclear spirals. As the processes involved in these phenomena (bars, gas flows, accretion, ...) are dynamical with different time-scales, morphological studies have not brought definite answers yet. This issue clearly requires a kinematic study as well. Figure 1 shows the stellar kinematics of NGC 1097, as extracted from long slit observations of the CO bandheads (≈2.3 μm). The slit was aligned along the major and minor axis of the nuclear bar (which has an extent of ≈ 10″). Note the unusual central dip in the dispersion profiles. Papers presenting the whole data set analysis are in preparation.

OASIS 2D kinematics of nuclear bars are compared with the results of simulations of double-barred galaxies.

Using the integral field spectrograph TIGER at CFHT, we have observed a few nearby galaxy nuclei suspected to harbor a supermassive black hole. The two remarkable objects presented here, M 31 and M 104, display peculiar kinematics: a rapidly rotating cold nuclear disk and puzzling photometric and kinematical asymetries in the case of M 104 and M 31 respectively. Axisymmetric models confirm the presence of supermassive black holes. However at the attained subparsec resolution, we are far from understanding the present observations of M 31's nucleus.

Subarcsecond two-dimensional imagery and spectrometry of the stellar component of galactic nuclei show complex systems, with multiple components and the possible presence of supermassive black-holes. Strategies for observation with the VLT, both with and without adaptive optics, are discussed, in terms of presently planned or future instrumentation.

We present here axisymmetric two and three integral models of the S0 galaxy NGC 3115. The light and mass models are based on an application of the Multi-Gaussian Expansion (MGE) method on V band images of NGC 3115. The resulting model fits the photometry from the central HST pixel (0.045 arcsec) up to a radius of ~ 500 arcsec (combining a wide field image kindly provided by Cecilia Scorza, an HRCAM/CFHT image, and the WFPC2/HST image). The deprojection is analytical if each component corresponds to a 3D Gaussian. Here, the model is assumed axisymmetric. The analytical expression of the luminosity density serves as the input for all the dynamical models.
