Background Many people do not meet the recommended health guidance of participation in a minimum of 150–300 min of moderate intensity physical activity per week, often promoted as at least 30 min of physical activity on 5 days of the week. This is concerning and highlights the importance of finding innovative ways to help people to be physically active each day. Snacktivity™ is a novel approach that aims to encourage people to do small, 2–5 min bouts of physical activity ‘snacks’ throughout the whole day, such that they achieve at least 150 min of moderate intensity activity per week. However, before it can be recommended, there is a need to explore whether the concept is acceptable to the public. Methods A survey to assess the views of the public about Snacktivity™ was distributed to adult patients registered at six general practices in the West Midlands, UK and to health care employees in the same region. Results A total of 5989 surveys were sent to patients, of which 558 were returned (9.3%). A further 166 surveys were completed by health care employees. A total of 85% of respondents liked the Snacktivity™ concept. The flexibility of the approach was highly rated. A high proportion of participants (61%) reported that the ability to self-monitor their behaviour would help them to do Snacktivity™ throughout their day. Physically inactive participants perceived that Snacktivity™ would help to increase their physical activity, more than those who were physically active (OR = 0.41, 95% CI: 0.25–0.67). Approximately 90% of respondents perceived that Snacktivity™ was easy to do on a non-working day compared to 60% on a working day. Aerobic activity ‘snacks’ were preferred to those which were strength based. Conclusions The Snacktivity™ approach to promoting physical activity was viewed positively by the public and interventions to test the merits of such an approach now need to be developed and tested in a variety of everyday contexts.

Between 14 and 20 July 2018, small remotely-piloted aircraft systems (RPAS) were deployed to the San Luis Valley of Colorado (USA) together with a variety of surface-based remote and in-situ sensors, and radiosonde systems as part of the Lower Atmospheric Profiling Studies at Elevation – a Remotely-piloted Aircraft Team Experiment (LAPSE-RATE). The observations from LAPSE-RATE were aimed at improving our understanding of boundary layer structure, cloud and aerosol properties and surface-atmosphere exchange, and provide detailed information to support model evaluation and improvement work. The current manuscript describes the observations obtained using four different types of RPAS deployed by the University of Colorado Boulder and Black Swift Technologies. These included the DataHawk2, the Talon and the TTwistor (U. of Colorado) and the S1 (Black Swift Technologies). Together, these aircraft collected over 30 hours of data throughout the northern half of the San Luis Valley, sampling altitudes between the surface and 914 m AGL. Data from these platforms are publicly available through the Zenodo archive, and are co-located with other LAPSE-RATE data as part of the Zenodo LAPSE-RATE community (https://zenodo.org/communities/lapse-rate/). Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) affects the health and wellbeing of millions worldwide. In high latitude countries such as the United Kingdom (UK), severe complications disproportionally affect ethnic minority groups.To develop a decision-analytic model to estimate the cost effectiveness of population strategies to prevent VDD.An individual-level simulation model was used to compare: (I) wheat flour fortification; (II) supplementation of at-risk groups; and (III) combined flour fortification and supplementation; with (IV) a 'no additional intervention' scenario, reflecting the current Vitamin D policy in the UK. We simulated the whole population over 90 years. Data from national nutrition surveys were used to estimate the risk of deficiency under the alternative scenarios. Costs incurred by the health care sector, the government, local authorities, and the general public were considered. Results were expressed as total cost and effect of each strategy, and as the cost per 'prevented case of VDD' and the 'cost per Quality Adjusted Life Year (QALY)'.Wheat flour fortification was cost saving as its costs were more than offset by the cost savings from preventing VDD. The combination of supplementation and fortification was cost effective (£9.5 per QALY gained). The model estimated that wheat flour fortification alone would result in 25% fewer cases of VDD, while the combined strategy would reduce the number of cases by a further 8%.There is a strong economic case for fortifying wheat flour with Vitamin D, alone or in combination with targeted vitamin D3 supplementation.

This paper describes the development and integration of a dual sensor payload into an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) for agricultural remote sensing. The dual sensor payload is comprised of a FLIR Tau 2 thermal infrared sensor linked to a TeAx ThermalCapture processor and a MicaSense RedEdge 5 band multi-spectral sensor. Sensors were mounted into a UASUSA Tempest fixed wing unmanned aircraft using a 3-D printed mount. The sensors were integrated such that a single trigger signal from a BlackSwift Technologies SwiftPilot autopilot activated both sensors simultaneously. Payload system design, development, implementation, power supply, and installation considerations are discussed along with a review of the dual sensor system performance.

I am compelled to add my voice to the many others (e.g., Gold and Zahm, 2008; Brownell and Melnick, 2008; Greenberg, 2008), who have called for more attention to research in Gestalt therapy. For the past 10 years, I have had the good fortune to be involved in training, supervising, and mentoring the research of doctoral psychology students at Pacific University (Portland, Oregon), some of whom represent the next generation of Gestalt practitioners. The situation at Pacific is rare, if not unique (in the USA). The purpose of this article is to describe the program at Pacific, and to make the case that Gestalt therapy training and research can still take place within academic institutions and not be left solely to be carried on by Gestalt therapy training institutes.

Five procedures are presented for the determination of hydrogen peroxide and organic hydroperoxides (including organic peroxyacids) at concentrations of 1–10 μM in aqueous soltion. All five are spectrophotometric methods, based on formation of phenolphthalein or triiodide, catalytic dye bleaching, coupled oxidation of NADPH, and horseradish peroxidase-coupled oxidations. Each is evaluated in terms of sensitivity, selectivity and reliability. The method based on coupled oxidation of NADPH is the most widely applicable to peroxidic species, whereas the horseradish peroxidase method can be made highly selective for hydrogen peroxide.

The direct electrochemistry of redox proteins has been achieved at a variety of electrodes, including modified gold, pyrolytic graphite and metal oxides. Careful design of electrode surfaces and electrolyte conditions are required for the attainment of rapid and reversible protein-electrode interaction. The electron transfer reactions of more complex systems, such as redox enzymes, are now being examined. The 'well-behaved' electrochemistry of redox proteins can be usefully exploited by coupling the electrode reaction to enzymes for which the redox proteins act as cofactors. In systems where direct electron transfer is very slow, small electron carriers, or mediators, may be employed to enhance the rate of electron exchange with the electrode. The organometallic compound ferrocene and its derivatives have proved particularly effective in this role. A new generation of electrochemical biosensors employs ferrocene derivatives as mediators.

Environmental informatics uses large multidimensional, complex datasets to study environmental problems, which can be both discrete and continuous in space or time. These datasets and their requisite metadata can be managed by queryable databases. Geospatial Web application programming interfaces (APIs) provide remote access to dynamic subsets of environmental information. Persistent identifiers make data citable. The storage-computing trade-off is now heavily skewed in favor of moving calculations to the data. Provenance metadata help determine a data object's reliability and trustworthiness. Rising atmospheric CO2, the Antarctic ozone hole, and Gulf Stream warm-core rings were all discovered by analyzing long-term datasets. Similar work continues on mapping evapotranspiration and snow water equivalent. In these "fourth paradigm" problems, data (especially data collected operationally) drive hypothesis formation. Making data available requires new discovery mechanisms and policies favoring data sharing. Cloud computing and array-friendly databases will help bring processing to the data. Ubiquitous location sensing and geotagging will help turn citizen scientists into environmental information collectors. © Copyright ©2012 by Annual Reviews. All rights reserved.

Rapid and reversible protein-electrode interaction has been achieved through the appropriate design of electrode surfaces and choice of electrolyte conditions. This enabled the direct (unmediated) electrochemistry of redox proteins at a range of electrode materials to be examined. Coupling of the electrode reaction to enzymes, for which the redox proteins act as cofactors, extended the study to systems of biological significance. Electrochemical techniques are finding increasing application in clinical analysis and a new type of amperometric enzyme electrode has been devised which exploits ferrocene derivatives as mediators between enzyme and electrode. The synthesis of ferrocene-drug conjugates permitted the development of an amperometric immunoelectrode.

India's home-grown biotech companies must strike a balance between domestic and international markets.

The authors surveyed 101 Gestalt therapists about their practice patterns in leading groups from a Gestalt perspective, including therapy, training, supervision, organizational development, and educational groups. The survey revealed that the group continues to be a popular and important modality among Gestalt therapists, particularly in conducting therapy, training, and supervision activities. The practice demographics of those types of groups, including numbers of participants, frequency, and duration, have not changed significantly in the past 30 years. Therapy group leaders in 2002 however, are relying on a blend of approaches that draw on intrapersonal, interpersonal, and systems level interventions. The shift away from an exclusive or predominant “hot seat” approach, popular in the 1960s and 1970s, continues. Finally, survey respondents indicated that “group support” was the most important curative factor in current Gestalt therapy groups.

Since its introduction in the late 1940s in the U.S., the theory and practice of Gestalt therapy has been applied to and integrated with small group process and leadership and organizational development. There is a gap in the literature with respect to Gestalt therapy, theory, and practice and organizational leadership theory and practice. Organizational leadership models began with an emphasis on the leader and matured to include attention to the field. Although Gestalt therapy theory and practice has always been about the relationship between the individual and the field, its focus wandered in the 1960s and 1970s by becoming “leader-heavy.” Organizational leadership models have come to embrace the relational emphasis that Gestalt therapy has always embodied. Transformational leadership models in particular share much in common with Gestalt therapy and practice.

The pathogenesis of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) involves the cooperation of mutations promoting proliferation/survival and those impairing differentiation. The RAS pathway has been implicated as a key component of the proliferative drive in AML. We have screened AML patients, predominantly younger than 60 years and treated within 2 clinical trials, for NRAS (n = 1106), KRAS (n = 739), and HRAS (n = 200) hot-spot mutations using denaturing high-performance liquid chromatography or restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis. NRAS mutations were confirmed in 11% of patients (126/1106) and KRAS mutations in 5% (39/739). No HRAS mutations were detected in 200 randomly selected samples. Codons most frequently mutated were N12 (43%), N13 (21%), and K12 (21%). KRAS mutations were relatively overrepresented in French-American-British (FAB) type M4 (P < .001). NRAS mutation was over-represented in the t(3;5)(q21 approximately 25;q31 approximately q35) subgroup (P < .001) and underrepresented in t(15;17)(q22;q21) (P < .001). KRAS mutation was overrepresented in inv(16)(p13q22) (P = .004). Twenty-three percent of KRAS mutations were within the inv(16) subgroup. RAS mutation and FLT3 ITD were rarely coexistent (14/768; P < .001). Median percentage of RAS mutant allele assayed by quantitative RFLP analysis was 28% (N12), 19% (N13), 25% (N61), and 21% (K12). RAS mutation did not influence clinical outcome (overall/disease-free survival, complete remission, relapse rate) either for the entire cohort or within cytogenetic risk groups.

The etiology of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is largely unknown. Biologic and epidemiologic data implicate exogenous toxicants, including cytotoxic drugs, benzene, radiation, and cigarette smoking. Allelic variation in genes encoding enzymes such as NADP(H) quinone oxidoreductase (NQO1) and glutathione S-transferase T1 (GSTT1) that metabolize environmental toxicants predispose to subtypes of AML, including therapy-related AML. We assayed NRAS oncogene mutation and FLT3 internal tandem duplication in 447 AML patients with an abnormal karyotype treated in Medical Research Council (MRC) AML clinical trials. Functional allelic variant frequencies in genes encoding carcinogen-metabolizing enzymesGSTT1, GSTM1, CYP1A1,CYP2D6, CYP2C19, SULT1A1, and NQO1 were previously determined for this cohort. FLT3 internal tandem duplication (ITD) frequency was 17%, and NRAS mutation 12% for the entire cohort. The 2 mutations were found together in only 4 patients. No association was found between enzyme allelic variant frequencies and the presence of FLT3 ITD for the entire cohort or within cytogenetic subgroups. CYP1A1*2B (Val) high-inducibility variant allele was overrepresented in patients with NRAS mutation compared with no mutation, for (1) the entire AML cohort (n = 8/53 vs 26/371; odds ratio [OR] = 2.36; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.01-5.53) and (2) the poor-risk karyotype group (n = 6/14 vs 4/89; OR = 15.94; 95% CI 3.71-68.52) comprising patients with partial/complete deletion of chromosome 5 or 7, or abnormalities of chromosome 3. The CYP1A1*2B allele may predispose to the development of these subgroups of AML by augmented phase 1 metabolism to highly reactive intermediates of CYP1A1 substrates, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or by generation of oxidative stress as a metabolic by-product.

FLT3 mutations, either internal tandem duplications (ITDs) or aspartate residue 835 (D835) point mutations, are present in approximately one third of patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and have been associated with an increased relapse rate. We have studied FLT3 mutations in paired presentation and relapse samples to ascertain the biology of these mutations and to evaluate whether they can be used as markers of minimal residual disease. At diagnosis, 24 patients were wild-type FLT3, and 4 acquired a FLT3 mutation at relapse (2 D835+, 2 ITD+), with a further patient acquiring an ITD at second relapse. Of 20 patients positive at diagnosis (18 ITD+, 2 D835+), 5 who were all originally ITD+ had no detectable mutation at relapse, as determined by a sensitive radioactive polymerase chain reaction. One of these patients had acquired an N-Ras mutation not detectable at presentation. Furthermore, another patient had a completely different ITD at relapse, which could not be detected in the presentation sample. These results indicate that FLT3 mutations are secondary events in leukemogenesis, are unstable, and thus should be used cautiously for the detection of minimal residual disease.

pep5 mutants of Saccharomyces cerevisiae accumulate inactive precursors to the vacuolar hydrolases. In addition, they show a vestigial vacuole morphology and a sensitivity to growth on media containing excess divalent cations. This pleiotropic phenotype observed for pep5::TRP1 mutants is partially suppressed by the vps8-200 allele. pep5::TRP1 vps8-200 mutants show near wild-type levels of mature-sized soluble vacuolar hydrolases, growth on zinc-containing medium, and a more “wild-type” vacuolar morphology; however, aminopeptidase I and alkaline phosphatase accumulate as precursors. These data suggest that Pep5p is a bifunctional protein and that the TRP1 insertion does not eliminate function, but results in a shorter peptide that can interact with Vps8-200p, allowing for partial function. vps8 deletion/disruption mutants contain a single enlarged vacuole. This genetic interaction was unexpected, since Pep5p was thought to interact more directly with the vacuole, and Vps8p is thought to play a role in transport between the Golgi complex and the prevacuolar compartment. The data are consistent with Pep5p functioning both at the site of Vps8p function and more closely proximal to the vacuole. They also provide evidence that the three transport pathways to the vacuole either converge or share gene products at late step(s) in the pathway(s).

Background. Liposuction is the most commonly performed cosmetic surgical procedure in the United States. Traditional liposuction (TL) performed under general anesthesia has been associated with reports of major systemic complications, including death. When TL is performed using only tumescent anesthesia, there have been no reported deaths and few significant systemic complications. Power liposuction (PL), a newer procedure in which a reciprocating cannula is used to evacuate fat, has reported benefits over TL. Objective. To determine the complication rate associated with PL and to compare it with TL (regardless of the type of anesthesia). Methods. In this study, 207 consecutive PL cases performed with tumescent anesthesia between August 2000 and May 2002 by a dermatologic surgeon (B.K.) and a plastic surgeon (M.B.) were reviewed retrospectively to determine the number of complications associated with the PL procedure. Results. No systemic complications were identified, and only three local complications (all seromas) were found. This represents a complication rate of 1.4%. Conclusion. Our results demonstrate fewer complications when performing PL using tumescent anesthesia compared with TL using general anesthesia. When compared with TL using tumescent anesthesia, the overall complication rate did not differ significantly. We conclude that in addition to PL previously demonstrated benefits, the complication profile compares favorably with TL under local tumescent anesthesia. Therefore, PL may assume a more prominent role in the armamentarium of the surgeon performing liposuction.

Biopharmaceutical innovation has had a profound health and economic impact globally. Developed countries have traditionally been the source of most innovations as well as the destination for the resulting economic and health benefits. As a result, most prior research on this sector has focused on developed countries. This paper seeks to fill the gap in research on emerging markets by analyzing factors that influence innovative activity in the indigenous biopharmaceutical sectors of China, India, Brazil, and South Africa. Using qualitative research methodologies, this paper a) shows how biopharmaceutical innovation is taking place within the entrepreneurial sectors of these emerging markets, b) identifies common challenges that indigenous entrepreneurs face, c) highlights the key role played by the state, and d) reveals that the transition to innovation by companies in the emerging markets is characterized by increased global integration. It suggests that biopharmaceutical innovators in emerging markets are capitalizing on opportunities to participate in the drug development value chain and thus developing capabilities and relationships for competing globally both with and against established companies headquartered in developed countries.

We present the first EPR and ENDOR examination of a catalase compound I (Cat I), the one formed by peracetic acid treatment of Micrococcus lysodeikticus catalase. The Cat I rapid-passage EPR signal (g perpendicular eff = 3.32; g parallel eff approximately 2) appears quite different from those reported previously for the compounds I from horseradish peroxidase (HRP I) and chloroperoxidase. Nonetheless, all three signals can be explained by the same model for exchange coupling between an S = 1 oxoferryl [Fe = O]2+ moiety and a porphyrin pi-cation radical (S' = 1/2) (Schulz, C. E., et al. (1979) FEBS Lett. 103, 102-105). The signal for Cat I is unlike those for the two peroxidases in that it reflects a ferromagnetic rather than antiferromagnetic exchange. Preliminary 1H ENDOR spectra for Cat I appear to differ from the proton (1H) ENDOR spectra of HRP I; the latter, along with the 14N ENDOR spectra, indicate that the porphyrin radical in HRP I exhibits a predominantly A2u-like state having large spin densities on porphyrin N and C(beta). The proton ENDOR spectrum of Cat I is insensitive to H/D exchange, which indicates that the [Fe = O]2+ moiety is not protonated. Consideration of the EPR results for a series of compounds I suggests that the sign and magnitude of the exchange parameter (J) is correlated with the nature of the proximal axial ligand.

Summary Chlamydia pneumoniae , a newly described Chlamydia species, has been shown to be a cause of acute respiratory tract infection in both adults and children, but its role in human infection is still under investigation. Here we present a family outbreak of C. pneumoniae infection where three members of a family presented with a ‘flu-like illness' and acute upper respiratory tract infection which did not improve despite penicillin or septrin therapy. No history of exposure to birds, pets or animals was obtained. As C. pneumoniae isolation from respiratory secretions is not without difficulty, diagnosis usually relies currently on serum-based tests. In this study C. pneumoniae specific IgM determined by the micro-immunofluorescence test was detected in the three clinical cases. All three cases had an elevated complement-fixing antibody titre to Psittacosis-LGV antigen, which may have suggested psittacosis, if type-specific tests had not been performed. In addition, three other members of the family had C. pneumoniae -specific IgG antibody although specific IgM was absent. These three younger members of the family had been symptomatic in the month preceding symptoms in their older sibling and their parents. All the symptomatic members of the family made a complete recovery on tetracycline therapy.

Although neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) threaten the health of those living in the developing world, innovation directed toward addressing NTDs is comparatively meager. Health biotechnology firms in rapidly growing economies in the global South are developing and selling vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics for these diseases to local markets. In this paper we identify a pipeline of sixty-two NTD products from seventy-eight "Southern" companies. We also propose creation of a Global Health Accelerator-a new nonprofit organization whose mission would be to support and help grow this Southern source of affordable innovation for NTDs.

Recombinant activated factor V11 (rFV11a) is a relatively new procoagulant agent and its place in surgical practice continues to be investigated. We report the use of rFV11a to help manage bleeding in the operating theatre in a neonate, following weaning from cardiopulmonary bypass for arterial switch procedure, when bleeding continued in spite of maximal medical therapy and apparent exclusion of a surgical cause of bleeding. In this patient administration of rFV11a failed to facilitate haemostasis and cardiopulmonary bypass was re-instituted allowing location and repair of a small awkward surgical source. Separation from this additional 20 min of bypass was successful but a large thrombus was noted in the membrane oxygenator of the extracorporeal circuit in spite of the presence of adequate 'laboratory' markers of anticoagulation in the pump blood. No adverse sequelae to the patient occurred.

India and China have made major progress toward establishing research- and innovation-based health biotechnology sectors. Local health needs, including diseases that predominantly affect the poor, have driven much of this success. We argue that emerging domestic firms can play an important role as reliable and high-quality suppliers of existing products and as innovators for global health needs. Indeed, these firms’ participation may make existing global health approaches more sustainable. However, global health stakeholders, including international donors and the Indian and Chinese governments, will need to fashion incentives for these companies to retain a strategic focus on the global poor.

In Gestalt therapy, transference is viewed as a contact boundary disturbance which impairs the patient's ability to accurately perceive the present therapy situation. The boundary disturbances in Gestalt therapy most closely related to the analytic notion of transference are projection, introjection, and confluence. In Gestalt group psychotherapy, group members interfere with the process of need identification and satisfaction by distorting their contact with each other through projecting, introjecting, and being confluent. The Gestalt group therapist uses interventions directed to individuals and to the group to increase participants' awareness of these boundary disturbances and of the present contact opportunities available to them when these disturbances are resolved. In formulating interventions, the leader is mindful of the function of boundary disturbances to the group-as-a-whole as well as to individuals.

Topical 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) and various light sources have been used to treat actinic keratoses and acne. Many of these regimens have required long incubation times due to the penetration qualities of ALA. This study tested the effectiveness of ALA in producing erythema when applied for 10 minutes after 2 passes of microdermabrasion versus an incubation time of one hour without microdermabrasion. The areas were treated with a 595-nm pulsed dye laser at 15 J/cm2 or 22.5 J/cm2. Photographs were taken at 24 and 48 hours after the treatment. The data indicated consistent superior results with the use of microdermabrasion prior to the application of ALA for 10 minutes. It appears that incubation of ALA with microdermabrasion for 10 minutes is as effective as, or more so than, ALA applied alone for one hour in producing erythema.

We previously reported that a significant percentage of patients who underwent power liposuction noted an increase in their breast size.To determine whether the documented observation of breast enlargement after power liposuction also occurs after traditional liposuction.Charts were retrospectively reviewed and patient interviews were conducted for 70 female patients who had traditional liposuction. Analyses were made based on several factors, including age, pre- and postoperative weight, total fat aspirate volume, treated body areas, and hormonal medications for patients who did and did not have breast enlargement. These results were then compared with patients who experienced an increase in breast size after power, liposuction.Thirty-seven percent of the study patients (26 of 70) undergoing traditional liposuction reported an increase in breast size. Sixty-five percent of these women (17 of 26) reported an increase of one or more cup sizes. Larger fat aspirate volumes and liposuction of the abdomen and hip or abdomen, hip, and thigh areas were factors associated with the patients who noted breast enlargement after traditional liposuction.An increase in breast size was reported in 37% of patients after traditional liposuction and in 34% of patients after power liposuction. We conclude that breast enlargement after both traditional and power liposuction is not related to the mechanical effects of power liposuction. We propose the same hypothesis reported in our previous study that an altered androgen to estrogen ratio after liposuction is likely responsible for this noted occurrence. Weight gain may also be a factor.

A series of 8-(ferrocenylalkyl)theophylline conjugates were synthesized for evaluation in a homogeneous, competitive electrochemical immunoassay for theophylline with amperometric detection of the ferrocene label at +320 mV. The electrical signal was amplified via redox cycling with the glucose oxidase/glucose system. The resulting catalytic current was strongly inhibited upon binding of the conjugates to anti-theophylline antibodies such that a large excess of theophylline was required to achieve complete reversal leading to an assay with poor sensitivity in the clinical range. A study of the nonspecific interaction of the antibodies with various ferrocene derivatives indicated that this was reduced when a charged functional group was present on the metallocene ring. Consequently, a conjugate was synthesized with a quaternary ammonium group which when incorporated into the assay resulted in improved sensitivity.

In acute myeloid leukemia (AML), further prognostic determinants are required in addition to cytogenetics to predict patients at increased risk of relapse. Recent studies have indicated that an internal tandem duplication (ITD) in the FLT3 gene may adversely affect clinical outcome. This study evaluated the impact of a FLT3/ITD mutation on outcome in 854 patients, mostly 60 years of age or younger, treated in the United Kingdom Medical Research Council (MRC) AML trials. It is suggested that monocytes in patients with chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia (CMML) or chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) with monocytosis have morphological/functional abnormalities which cause inaccurate counting in automated analysers. In this study, monocytes in 21 normal and 14 CMML blood samples were subjected to morphological analysis and were counted by the manual reference method, three automated analysers and esterase staining. Morphological analysis showed no significant difference between control and CMML monocytes. The alpha-naphthyl acetate esterase scores, a measure of monocyte function, showed a reduction of 40% in CMML monocytes compared to controls. Counts by analysers showed that the Sysmex NE 8000 was the least accurate for CMML monocyte counts and that the Coulter STK-S and Sysmex SE 9000 gave results closer to the manually counted standards.

Developing countries can benefit from conducting innovative research and development in science and technology prioritised to their own specific health and development needs. Here, the role of the domestic private sector in utilising its knowledge, expertise, resources and relationships is critical for translating R&D results into tangible health products and services for individuals. We have recently initiated a study to analyse how the domestic health biotechnology sectors of four developing countries - India, China, Brazil and South Africa - address local health needs. In this paper, we introduce the purpose, design and objectives of the study, describe our rationale for undertaking this research and present preliminary results from our analysis of health biotechnology firms in India.
