The behaviour of CTAB adsorbed on polycrystalline gold electrodes has been studied using a combination of spectroelectrochemical methods. The results indicate that the formation of the layer is the consequence of the precipitation of the CTAB micelles on the electrode surface as bromide ions, which stabilize the micelles, are replaced by perchlorate anions. This process leads to the formation of CTA+ layers in which perchlorate ions are intercalated, in which the adlayer suffers a continuous rearrangement that leads to the formation of micro-dominions of different types of hydrogen-bonded water populations throughout the adlayer. After prolonged cycling, a stable situation is reached. Under these conditions, water molecules permeate through the adlayer toward the electrode surface at potentials positive of the potential of zero charge, due to the repulsion between the CTA+ layer and the positive charge of the electrode. Precision radial velocity (RV) measurements continue to be a key tool for detecting and characterising extrasolar planets. While instrumental precision keeps improving, stellar activity remains a barrier to obtaining reliable measurements below 1–2 m s−1 accuracy. Aims. Using simulations and real data, we investigate the capabilities of a deep neural network approach to producing activity-free Doppler measurements of stars. Methods. As case studies we used observations of two known stars, ϵ Eridani and AU Microscopii, both of which have clear signals of activity-induced Doppler variability. Synthetic observations using the starsim code were generated for the observables (inputs) and the resulting Doppler signal (labels), and then they were used to train a deep neural network algorithm to predict Doppler corrections. We identified a relatively simple architecture, consisting of convolutional layers followed by fully connected layers, that is adequate for the task. The indices investigated are mean line-profile parameters (width, bisector, and contrast) and multi-band photometry. Results. We demonstrate that the RV-independent approach can drastically reduce spurious Doppler variability from known physical effects, such as spots, rotation, and convective blueshift. We identify the combinations of activity indices with the most predictive power. When applied to real observations, we observe a good match of the correction with the observed variability, but we also find that the noise reduction is not as good as in the simulations, probably due to a lack of detail in the simulated physics. Conclusions. We demonstrate that a model-driven machine learning approach is sufficient to clean Doppler signals from activity-induced variability for well-known physical effects. The CARMENES instrument was conceived to deliver high-accuracy radial velocity (RV) measurements with long-term stability to search for temperate rocky planets around a sample of nearby cool stars. The broad wavelength coverage was designed to provide a range of stellar activity indicators to assess the nature of potential RV signals and to provide valuable spectral information to help characterise the stellar targets. The CARMENES Data Release 1 (DR1) makes public all observations obtained during the CARMENES guaranteed time observations, which ran from 2016 to 2020 and collected 19,633 spectra for a sample of 362 targets. The CARMENES survey target selection was aimed at minimising biases, and about 70% of all known M dwarfs within 10 pc and accessible from Calar Alto were included. The data were pipeline-processed, and high-level data products, including 18,642 precise RVs for 345 targets, were derived. Time series data of spectroscopic activity indicators were also obtained. We discuss the characteristics of the CARMENES data, the statistical properties of the stellar sample, and the spectroscopic measurements. We show examples of the use of CARMENES data and provide a contextual view of the exoplanet population revealed by the survey, including 33 new planets, 17 re-analysed planets, and 26 confirmed planets from transiting candidate follow-up. A subsample of 238 targets was used to derive updated planet occurrence rates, yielding an overall average of 1.44+/-0.20 planets with 1 M_Earth < M sin i < 1000 M_Earth and 1 d < P_orb < 1000 d per star, and indicating that nearly every M dwarf hosts at least one planet. We present the discovery of an Earth-mass planet ($M_b\sin i = 1.26\pm0.21M_\oplus$) on a 15.6d orbit of a relatively nearby ($d\sim$9.6pc) and low-mass ($0.167\pm0.011 M_\odot$) M5.0V star, Wolf 1069. Sitting at a separation of $0.0672\pm0.0014$au away from the host star puts Wolf 1069b in the habitable zone (HZ), receiving an incident flux of $S=0.652\pm0.029S_\oplus$. The planetary signal was detected using telluric-corrected radial-velocity (RV) data from the CARMENES spectrograph, amounting to a total of 262 spectroscopic observations covering almost four years. There are additional long-period signals in the RVs, one of which we attribute to the stellar rotation period. This is possible thanks to our photometric analysis including new, well-sampled monitoring campaigns undergone with the OSN and TJO facilities that supplement archival photometry (i.e., from MEarth and SuperWASP), and this yielded an updated rotational period range of $P_{rot}=150-170$d, with a likely value at $169.3^{+3.7}_{-3.6}$d. The stellar activity indicators provided by the CARMENES spectra likewise demonstrate evidence for the slow rotation period, though not as accurately due to possible factors such as signal aliasing or spot evolution. Our detectability limits indicate that additional planets more massive than one Earth mass with orbital periods of less than 10 days can be ruled out, suggesting that perhaps Wolf 1069 b had a violent formation history. This planet is also the 6th closest Earth-mass planet situated in the conservative HZ, after Proxima Centauri b, GJ 1061d, Teegarden's Star c, and GJ 1002 b and c. Despite not transiting, Wolf 1069b is nonetheless a very promising target for future three-dimensional climate models to investigate various habitability cases as well as for sub-ms$^{-1}$ RV campaigns to search for potential inner sub-Earth-mass planets in order to test planet formation theories., 26 pages, 15 figures

Resumen Introduccion y objetivo El manejo de tumoraciones renales ≤ 4 cm en poblacion anciana o con comorbilidades supone un reto, constituyendo las terapias ablativas una alternativa interesante. El objetivo es evaluar la radiofrecuencia percutanea en el tratamiento de masas renales pequenas en nuestro centro, las complicaciones asociadas y los resultados obtenidos. Material y metodos Evaluacion retrospectiva de las radiofrecuencias realizadas entre abril de 2010 y abril de 2020 en nuestro centro. Se revisaron datos demograficos, comorbilidades asociadas, caracteristicas tumorales, complicaciones y resultados oncologicos y funcionales. Resultados Se trataron 57 tumores en 53 pacientes. Seguimiento medio de 48,2 meses. Se obtuvo un 89,5% de ablaciones completas. Hubo un 19,3% de complicaciones. Fueron catalogadas como mayores un 3,5% y un 5,3% segun Clavien-Dindo y SIR. Se encontro asociacion estadisticamente significativa entre el resultado inicial de la ablacion y la edad (p = 0,047), el score RENAL modificado (RENAL-m) (p = 0,044), la presencia de componente quistico (p = 0,049) y el tamano tumoral (p = 0,01). El punto de corte de tamano quedo establecido en 25 mm (p = 0,012). En el analisis multivariante, unicamente el tamano permanecio como predictor de resultado inicial de ablacion (p = 0,01; OR 1,183; IC 95% 1,041-1,345). La supervivencia cancer especifica y supervivencia libre de recurrencia a cinco anos fueron del 98,1% y del 89,5% respectivamente. Se observo una disminucion media del MDRD-4 de 6,59 mL/min (p = 0,005) en los seis primeros meses tras radiofrecuencia (RFA). Conclusiones Dados los excelentes resultados oncologicos y funcionales demostrados, la radiofrecuencia percutanea guiada por ecografia es una terapia eficaz y segura en el tratamiento de masas renales pequenas en pacientes seleccionados.

Introduction and objective The management of renal tumors ≤4 cm in elderly population or patients with comorbidities is a challenge, for which ablative therapies are an interesting alternative. The objective is to evaluate in our center the role of percutaneous radiofrequency in the treatment of small renal masses, the associated complications and the results obtained. Material and methods Retrospective evaluation of the radiofrequency treatments carried out between April 2010 and April 2020 in our center. Demographic data, associated comorbidities, tumor characteristics, complications and oncological and functional outcomes were reviewed. Results Fifty-seven tumors were treated in 53 patients. Mean follow-up of 48.2 months. The percentage of complete ablations obtained was of 89.5%. There were 19.3% of complications. According to Clavien-Dindo and SIR classification systems, 3.5% and 5.3% were major complications. A statistically significant association was found between the initial result of ablation and age (p = 0.047), RENAL-m (p = 0.044), the presence of cystic component (p = 0.049) and tumor size (p = 0.01). The cut-off point for size was established at 25 mm (p = 0.012). In multivariate analysis, only size remained as a predictor of initial ablation result (p = 0.01 OR = 1.183 CI 95% = 1.041–1.345). Cancer-specific survival and 5-year recurrence-free survival were 98.1% and 89.5%, respectively. A mean decrease of MDRD-4 of 6.59 mL/min (p = 0.005) was observed in the first 6 months after RFA. Conclusions Given the excellent oncological and functional results demonstrated, ultrasound-guided percutaneous radiofrequency ablation is an effective and safe treatment for small renal masses in selected patients.

The CARMENES radial-velocity survey is currently searching for planets in a sample of 387 M dwarfs. Here we report on two Saturn-mass planets orbiting TYC 2187-512-1 (M* = 0.50 M⊙) and TZ Ari (M* = 0.15 M⊙), respectively. We obtained supplementary photometric time series, which we use along with spectroscopic information to determine the rotation periods of the two stars. In both cases, the radial velocities also show strong modulations at the respective rotation period. We thus modeled the radial velocities as a Keplerian orbit plus a Gaussian process representing the stellar variability. TYC 2187-512-1 is found to harbor a planet with a minimum mass of 0.33 MJup in a near-circular 692-day orbit. The companion of TZ Ari has a minimum mass of 0.21 MJup, orbital period of 771 d, and orbital eccentricity of 0.46. We provide an overview of all known giant planets in the CARMENES sample, from which we infer an occurrence rate of giant planets orbiting M dwarfs with periods up to 2 yr in the range between 2 and 6%. TZ Ari b is only the second giant planet discovered orbiting a host with mass less than 0.3 M⊙. These objects occupy an extreme location in the planet mass versus host mass plane. This study aims to analyze the probability of an increase in mortality due to venous thrombosis of the lower limbs (VTLL), and it´s relation to days of hospital stay.We included all hospital records of patients with thrombosis in the lower limbs as main diagnosis from open access national datasets, we obtained epidemiological description of diagnosis, length of stay and mortality.Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) constituted 69% (1223/1785) of cases. From all the patients registered, 47 (2.63%) died. The highest mortality rate was observed in older adults, and patients with a longer hospital stay.Patients diagnosed with DVT, who endure a longer hospital stay, face a major risk of death.Analizar la probabilidad de un aumento de la mortalidad por trombosis venosa de miembros inferiores (TVMI) y su relación con los días de estancia hospitalaria.Se incluyeron los registros de egreso hospitalario con el diagnóstico de VTLL, obtenido de las bases de datos de los hospitales públicos de México.El diagnóstico más frecuente fue la trombosis venosa profunda (TVP) con el 69% (1223/1785) de los casos. We confirm the planetary nature of both of them using precise radial velocity measurements from the CARMENES and MAROON-X spectrographs, and supplement them with ground-based transit photometry. A joint analysis of all these data reveals that the shorter-period planet, TOI-1468 b (Pb = 1.88 d), has a planetary mass of Mb = 3.21 ± 0.24M⊕ and a radius of Rb = 1.280−0.039+0.038 R⊕, resulting in a density of ρb = 8.39−0.92+1.05 g cm−3, which is consistent with a mostly rocky composition. For the outer planet, TOI-1468 c (Pc = 15.53 d), we derive a mass of Mc = 6.64−0.68+0.67 M⊕,aradius of Rc = 2.06 ± 0.04 R⊕, and a bulk density of ρc = 2.00−0.19+0.21 g cm−3, which corresponds to a rocky core composition with a H/He gas envelope. These planets are located on opposite sides of the radius valley, making our system an interesting discovery as there are only a handful of other systems with the same properties. This discovery can further help determine a more precise location of the radius valley for small planets around M dwarfs and, therefore, shed more light on planet formation and evolution scenarios. © P. Context. The number of super-Earth and Earth-mass planet discoveries has increased significantly in the last two decades thanks to the Doppler radial velocity and planetary transit observing techniques. Either technique can detect planet candidates on its own, but the power of a combined photometric and spectroscopic analysis is unique for an insightful characterization of the planets, which in turn has repercussions for our understanding of the architecture of planetary systems and, therefore, their formation and evolution. Aims. Two transiting planet candidates with super-Earth radii around the nearby (d = 70.64 ± 0.06 pc) K7–M0 dwarf star TOI-1238 were announced by NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), which observed the field of TOI-1238 in four different sectors. We aim to validate their planetary nature using precise radial velocities taken with the CARMENES spectrograph. Methods. We obtained 55 CARMENES radial velocity measurements that span the 11 months between 9 May 2020 and 5 April 2021. For a better characterization of the parent star’s activity, we also collected contemporaneous optical photometric observations at the Joan Oró and Sierra Nevada observatories and retrieved archival photometry from the literature. We performed a combined TESS+CARMENES photometric and spectroscopic analysis by including Gaussian processes and Keplerian orbits to account for the stellar activity and planetary signals simultaneously. Results. We estimate that TOI-1238 has a rotation period of 40 ± 5 d based on photometric and spectroscopic data. The combined analysis confirms the discovery of two transiting planets, TOI-1238 b and c, with orbital periods of 0.764597−0.000011+0.000013 d and 3.294736−0.000036+0.000034 d, masses of 3.76−1.07+1.15 M⊕ and 8.32−1.88+1.90 M⊕, and radii of 1.21−0.10+0.11 R⊕ and 2.11−0.14+0.14 R⊕. They orbit their parent star at semimajor axes of 0.0137 ± 0.0004 au and 0.036 ± 0.001 au, respectively.The two planets are placed on opposite sides of the radius valley for M dwarfs and lie between the star and the inner border of TOI-1238’s habitable zone. The inner super-Earth TOI-1238 b is one of the densest ultra-short-period planets ever discovered (ρ = 11.7−3.4+4.2 g cm−3). The CARMENES data also reveal the presence of an outer, non-transiting, more massive companion with an orbital period and radial velocity amplitude of ≥600 d and ≥70 m s−1, which implies a likely mass of M ≥ 2 √(1− e2) MJup and a separation ≥1.1 au from its parent star. © ESO 2022., CARMENES is an instrument for the Centro Astronómico Hispano-Alemán de Calar Alto (CAHA, Almería, Spain).
