Context. Open clusters (OCs) are fundamental benchmarks where theories of star formation and stellar evolution can be tested and validated. Coma Ber and Latyshev 2 (Group X) are the second and third OCs closest to the Sun, making them excellent targets to search for low-mass stars and ultra-cool dwarfs. In addition, this pair will experience a flyby in 10-16 Myr which makes it a benchmark to test OCs pair interactions. Aims. We aim at analysing the membership, luminosity, mass, phase-space (i.e., positions and velocities), and energy distributions for Coma Ber and Latyshev 2 and test the hypothesis of the mixing of their populations at the encounter time. Methods. We develop a new phase-space membership methodology and apply it to Gaia data. With the recovered members we infer the phase-space, luminosity and mass distributions using publicly available Bayesian inference codes. Then, with a publicly available orbit integration code and members' positions and velocities, we integrate their orbits 20 Myr into the future. Results. In Coma Ber, we identify 302 candidate members distributed in the core and tidal tails. The tails are dynamically cold and asymmetrically populated. The stellar system called Group X is made of two structures: the disrupted OC Latyshev 2 (186 candidate members) and a loose stellar association called Mecayotl 1 (146 candidate members), both of them will fly by Coma Ber in $11.3\pm0.5$ Myr and $14.0\pm0.6$ Myr, respectively, and each other in $8.1\pm1.3$ Myr. Conclusions. We study the dynamical properties of the core and tails of Coma Ber and also confirm the existence of the OC Latyshev 2 and its neighbour stellar association Mecayotl 1. The CARMENES instrument was conceived to deliver high-accuracy radial velocity (RV) measurements with long-term stability to search for temperate rocky planets around a sample of nearby cool stars. The broad wavelength coverage was designed to provide a range of stellar activity indicators to assess the nature of potential RV signals and to provide valuable spectral information to help characterise the stellar targets. The CARMENES Data Release 1 (DR1) makes public all observations obtained during the CARMENES guaranteed time observations, which ran from 2016 to 2020 and collected 19,633 spectra for a sample of 362 targets. The CARMENES survey target selection was aimed at minimising biases, and about 70% of all known M dwarfs within 10 pc and accessible from Calar Alto were included. The data were pipeline-processed, and high-level data products, including 18,642 precise RVs for 345 targets, were derived. Time series data of spectroscopic activity indicators were also obtained. We discuss the characteristics of the CARMENES data, the statistical properties of the stellar sample, and the spectroscopic measurements. We show examples of the use of CARMENES data and provide a contextual view of the exoplanet population revealed by the survey, including 33 new planets, 17 re-analysed planets, and 26 confirmed planets from transiting candidate follow-up. A subsample of 238 targets was used to derive updated planet occurrence rates, yielding an overall average of 1.44+/-0.20 planets with 1 M_Earth < M sin i < 1000 M_Earth and 1 d < P_orb < 1000 d per star, and indicating that nearly every M dwarf hosts at least one planet. Current theories of planetary evolution predict that infant giant planets have large radii and very low densities before they slowly contract to reach their final size after about several hundred million years1,2. These theoretical expectations remain untested so far as the detection and characterization of very young planets is extremely challenging due to the intense stellar activity of their host stars3,4. Only the recent discoveries of young planetary transiting systems allow initial constraints to be placed on evolutionary models5,6,7. With an estimated age of 20 million years, V1298 Tau is one of the youngest solar-type stars known to host transiting planets; it harbours a system composed of four planets, two Neptune-sized, one Saturn-sized and one Jupiter-sized8,9. Here we report a multi-instrument radial velocity campaign of V1298 Tau, which allowed us to determine the masses of two of the planets in the system. We find that the two outermost giant planets, V1298 Tau b and e (0.64 ± 0.19 and 1.16 ± 0.30 Jupiter masses, respectively), seem to contradict our knowledge of early-stages planetary evolution. According to models, they should reach their mass–radius combination only hundreds of millions of years after formation. Ultracool dwarfs (UCDs) comprise the lowest mass members of the stellar population and brown dwarfs, from M7 V to cooler objects with L, T, and Y spectral types. Most of them have been discovered using wide-field imaging surveys, for which the Virtual Observatory (VO) has proven to be of great utility. We aim to perform a search for UCDs in the entire Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS) second data release (2176 deg$^2$) following a VO methodology. We also explore the ability to reproduce this search with a purely machine learning (ML)-based methodology that relies solely on J-PLUS photometry. We followed three different approaches based on parallaxes, proper motions, and colours, respectively, using the VOSA tool to estimate the effective temperatures. For the ML methodology, we built a two-step method based on principal component analysis and support vector machine algorithms. We identified a total of 7827 new candidate UCDs, which represents an increase of about 135% in the number of UCDs reported in the sky coverage of the J-PLUS second data release. Among the candidate UCDs, we found 122 possible unresolved binary systems, 78 wide multiple systems, and 48 objects with a high Bayesian probability of belonging to a young association. We also identified four objects with strong excess in the filter corresponding to the Ca II H and K emission lines and four other objects with excess emission in the H$\alpha$ filter. With the ML approach, we obtained a recall score of 92% and 91% in the test and blind test, respectively. We consolidated the proposed search methodology for UCDs, which will be used in deeper and larger upcoming surveys such as J-PAS and Euclid. We concluded that the ML methodology is more efficient in the sense that it allows for a larger number of true negatives to be discarded prior to analysis with VOSA, although it is more photometrically restrictive., Comment: Accepted in A&A

We report the discovery of WTS-2 b, an unusually close-in 1.02-day hot Jupiter (Mp=1.12MJ, Rp=1.363RJ) orbiting a K2V star, which has a possible gravitationally-bound M-dwarf companion at 0.6 arcsec separation contributing ~20 percent of the total flux in the observed J-band light curve. The planet is only 1.5 times the separation from its host star at which it would be destroyed by Roche lobe overflow, and has a predicted remaining lifetime of just ~40 Myr, assuming a tidal dissipation quality factor of Q'*=10^6. Q'* is a key factor in determining how frictional processes within a host star affect the orbital evolution of its companion giant planets, but it is currently poorly constrained by observations. We calculate that the orbital decay of WTS-2 b would correspond to a shift in its transit arrival time of T_shift~17 seconds after 15 years assuming Q'*=10^6. A shift less than this would place a direct observational constraint on the lower limit of Q'* in this system. We also report a correction to the previously published expected T_shift for WASP-18 b, finding that T_shift=356 seconds after 10 years for Q'*=10^6, which is much larger than the estimated 28 seconds quoted in WASP-18 b discovery paper. We attempted to constrain Q'* via a study of the entire population of known transiting hot Jupiters, but our results were inconclusive, requiring a more detailed treatment of transit survey sensitivities at long periods. We conclude that the most informative and straight-forward constraints on Q'* will be obtained by direct observational measurements of the shift in transit arrival times in individual hot Jupiter systems. We show that this is achievable across the mass spectrum of exoplanet host stars within a decade, and will directly probe the effects of stellar interior structure on tidal dissipation., 21 pages, 16 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Our goal is to characterise the physical properties of the metal-poor brown dwarf population. In particular, we focus on the recently discovered peculiar dwarf WISE J1810055$-$1010023. We collected optical iz and near-infrared J-band imaging on multiple occasions over 1.5 years to derive accurate trigonometric parallax and proper motion of the metal-depleted ultra-cool dwarf candidate WISE1810. We also acquired low-resolution optical spectroscopy (0.6$-$1.0 $\mu$m) and new infrared (0.9$-$1.3 $\mu$m) spectra of WISE1810 that were combined with our photometry, other existing data from the literature and our trigonometric distance to determine the object's luminosity from the integration of the observed spectral energy distribution covering from 0.6 through 16$\mu$m. We compared the full optical and infrared spectrum with state-of-the-art atmosphere models to further constrain its effective temperature, surface gravity and metallicity. WISE1810 is detected in the $iz$ bands with AB magnitudes of $i$=23.871$\pm$0.104 and $z$=20.147$\pm$0.083 mag in the PanSTARRS system. It does not show any obvious photometric variability beyond 0.1$-$0.2 mag in any of the $z$- and $J$-band filters. The very red $z-J \approx 2.9$ mag colour is compatible with an ultra-cool dwarf nature. Fitting for parallax and proper motion, we measure a trigonometric parallax of 112.5$^{+8.1}_{-8.0}$ mas for WISE1810, placing the object at only 8.9$^{+0.7}_{-0.6}$ pc, about three times closer than previously thought. We employed Monte Carlo methods to estimate the error on the parallax and proper motion. The object's luminosity was determined at log$L/L_\odot$=$-$5.78$\pm$0.11 dex. From the comparison to atmospheric models, we infer a likely metallicity of [Fe/H] $\approx -1.5$ and an effective temperature cooler than 1000K. Context. In modern astronomy, machine learning has proved to be efficient and effective to mine the big data from the newesttelescopes. Spectral surveys enable us to characterize millions of objects, while long exposure time observations and wide surveysconstrain their strides from millions to billions. Aims.In this study, we construct a supervised machine learning algorithm, to classify the objects in the Javalambre Photometric LocalUniverse Survey first data release (J-PLUS DR1). Methods.The sample set is featured with 12-waveband photometry, and magnitudes are labeled with spectrum-based catalogs, in-cluding Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopic data, Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope, and VERONCAT- Veron Catalog of Quasars & AGN. The performance of the classifier is presented with applications of blind test validations basedon RAdial Velocity Extension, Kepler Input Catalog, 2 MASS Redshift Survey, and the UV-bright Quasar Survey. A new algorithmis applied to constrain the extrapolation that could decrease accuracies for many machine learning classifiers. Results.The accuracies of the classifier are 96.5% in blind test and 97.0% in training cross validation. The F1-scores for each classare presented to show the precision of the classifier. We have corrected an error in Passegger et al. (2019) in the calculation of the stellar surface gravity log g from literature masses and radii provided by Gaidos & Mann (2014) and Mann et al. (2015).

Los resultados a largo plazo del procedimiento de maze con criotermia en pacientes con fibrilacion auricular durante procedimientos quirurgicos concomitantes son todavia inciertos. Metodo Entre 2006 y 2011, 150 pacientes consecutivos con fibrilacion auricular persistente y cardiopatia asociada fueron sometidos a cirugia de ablacion mediante criotermia asociada a cirugia concomitante. El procedimiento de Cox-Maze biauricular fue realizado en 67 pacientes y ablacion aislada de la auricula izquierda en 83 pacientes. Los resultados a tres anos en estos grupos fueron comparados mediante seguimiento clinico, electrocardiografico y mediante Holter 24 horas y ecocardiografia con medicion de la onda A transmitral al mes, a los 6 y 12 meses y despues anualmente. Resultados Los pacientes sometidos a ablacion Cox-Maze presentaron una libertad de fibrilacion auricular del 97, 94, 89, 80 y 54% a 1, 6, 12, 24 y 36 meses respectivamente. En el seguimiento de los 12 meses estas diferencias resultaron significativas (p < 0.05). Como factor de riesgo de recurrencia de fibrilacion auricular se identifico la ablacion aislada de la auricula izquierda. Conclusiones La ablacion mediante criotermia tiene un elevado porcentaje de exitos a dos anos; la recurrencia se incrementa a partir de entonces independientemente de la tecnica realizada. Para el tratamiento de la fibrilacion auricular persistente asociada a otra patologia quirurgica cardiaca se debe realizar un tratamiento intensivo mediante ablacion biauricular

Context. M dwarfs are known to generate the strongest magnetic fields among main-sequence stars with convective envelopes, but we are still lacking a consistent picture of the link between the magnetic fields and underlying dynamo mechanisms, rotation, and activity. Aims. In this work we aim to measure magnetic fields from the high-resolution near-infrared spectra taken with the CARMENES radial-velocity planet survey in a sample of 29 active M dwarfs and compare our results against stellar parameters. Methods. We used the state-of-The-Art radiative transfer code to measure total magnetic flux densities from the Zeeman broadening of spectral lines and filling factors. Results. We detect strong kG magnetic fields in all our targets. In 16 stars the magnetic fields were measured for the first time. Our measurements are consistent with the magnetic field saturation in stars with rotation periods P < 4 d. The analysis of the magnetic filling factors reveal two different patterns of either very smooth distribution or a more patchy one, which can be connected to the dynamo state of the stars and/or stellar mass. Conclusions. Our measurements extend the list of M dwarfs with strong surface magnetic fields. They also allow us to better constrain the interplay between the magnetic energy, stellar rotation, and underlying dynamo action. The high spectral resolution and observations at near-infrared wavelengths are the beneficial capabilities of the CARMENES instrument that allow us to address important questions about the stellar magnetism.© D. We present precise photospheric parameters of 282 M dwarfs determined from fitting the most recent version of PHOENIX models to high-resolution CARMENES spectra in the visible (0.52-0.96 μm) and NIR wavelength range (0.96-1.71 μm). With its aim to search for habitable planets around M dwarfs, several planets of different masses have been detected. The characterization of the target sample is important for the ability to derive and constrain the physical properties of any planetary systems that are detected. As a continuation of previous work in this context, we derived the fundamental stellar parameters effective temperature, surface gravity, and metallicity of the CARMENES M-dwarf targets from PHOENIX model fits using a χ method. We calculated updated PHOENIX stellar atmosphere models that include a new equation of state to especially account for spectral features of lowerature stellar atmospheres as well as new atomic and molecular line lists. We show the importance of selecting magnetically insensitive lines for fitting to avoid effects of stellar activity in the line profiles. For the first time, we directly compare stellar parameters derived from multiwavelength range spectra, simultaneously observed for the same star. We report the discovery of an esdL3 subdwarf, ULAS J020858.62+020657.0, and a usdL4.5 subdwarf, ULAS J230711.01+014447.1. They were identified as L subdwarfs by optical spectra obtained with the Gran Telescopio Canarias, and followed up by optical-to-near-infrared spectroscopy with the Very Large Telescope. We also obtained an optical-to-near-infrared spectrum of a previously known L subdwarf, ULAS J135058.85+081506.8, and reclassified it as a usdL3 subdwarf. These three objects all have typical halo kinematics. They have $T_{\rm eff}$ around 2050$-$2250 K, $-$1.8 $\leq$ [Fe/H] $\leq -$1.5, and mass around 0.0822$-$0.0833 M$_{\odot}$, according to model spectral fitting and evolutionary models. These sources are likely halo transitional brown dwarfs with unsteady hydrogen fusion, as their masses are just below the hydrogen-burning minimum mass, which is $\sim$ 0.0845 M$_{\odot}$ at [Fe/H] = $-$1.6 and $\sim$ 0.0855 M$_{\odot}$ at [Fe/H] = $-$1.8. Including these, there are now nine objects in the `halo brown dwarf transition zone', which is a `substellar subdwarf gap' that spans a wide temperature range within a narrow mass range of the substellar population., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

We present 27 new L subdwarfs and classify five of them as esdL and 22 as sdL. Our L subdwarf candidates were selected with the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey and Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Spectroscopic follow-up was carried out primarily with the OSIRIS spectrograph on the Gran Telescopio Canarias. Some of these new objects were followed up with the X-shooter instrument on the Very Large Telescope. We studied the photometric properties of the population of known L subdwarfs using colour-spectral type diagrams and colour-colour diagrams, by comparison with L dwarfs and main-sequence stars, and identified new colour spaces for L subdwarf selection/study in current and future surveys. We further discussed the brown dwarf transition-zone and the observational stellar/substellar boundary. We found that about one-third of 66 known L subdwarfs are substellar objects, with two-thirds being very low-mass stars. We also present the Hertzsprung-Russell diagrams, spectral type-absolute magnitude corrections, and tangential velocities of 20 known L subdwarfs observed by the Gaia astrometry satellite. One of our L subdwarf candidates, ULAS J233227.03+123452.0, is a mildly metal-poor spectroscopic binary brown dwarf: a ~L6p dwarf and a ~T4p dwarf. Background To evaluate the influence of subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) on the development of postoperative atrial fibrillation (AF) in patients undergoing aortic valve replacement surgery with extracorporeal circulation. Methods A prospective study in a tertiary hospital between July 2005 and December 2013 in which all patients undergoing aortic valve replacement with no other valve surgery were consecutively included. Patients who were in preoperative sinus rhythm were selected and they underwent thyroxine (T4) and thyroid-stimulating hormone determination in the month before surgery. Postoperative AF was defined as the development of AF during hospital admittance. Descriptive analysis and binary logistic regression were performed for the target variable. Results A total of 467 patients were studied, with 35 cases of SCH. The incidence of postoperative AF was 57% in the group with SCH versus 30.3% (p = 0.001) in the group without hypothyroidism, without significant differences in other postoperative complications. In the logistic regression analysis, the independent predictors of postoperative AF were SCH, age, and aortic clamping time. SCH multiplies the odds ratio of postoperative AF by 3.14 (95% confidence interval: 1.24–7.96). Conclusion SCH behaves like a risk factor for the development of postoperative AF in patients undergoing aortic valve replacement with extracorporeal circulation. Other studies are needed to determine whether preoperative T4 replacement therapy and/or more aggressive AF prophylaxis can prevent this complication in patients undergoing aortic valve replacement.

We report a case of transapical mitral valve-in-valve implantation for a deteriorated bioprosthesis using the Edwards Sapien 3 prosthesis via the transapical approach. This case demonstrates the safety and feasibility of using the Edwards Sapien 3 prosthesis in treating degenerated bioprosthetic mitral valves.

The design and construction of CARMENES has been presented at previous SPIE conferences. It is a next-generation radial-velocity instrument at the 3.5m telescope of the Calar Alto Observatory, which was built by a consortium of eleven Spanish and German institutions. CARMENES consists of two separate échelle spectrographs covering the wavelength range from 0.52 to 1.71¿m at a spec-tral resolution of R < 80,000, fed by fibers from the Cassegrain focus of the telescope. CARMENES saw ¿First Light¿ on Nov 9, 2015. During the commissioning and initial operation phases, we established basic performance data such as throughput and spectral resolution. We found that our hollow-cathode lamps are suitable for precise wavelength calibration, but their spectra contain a number of lines of neon or argon that are so bright that the lamps cannot be used in simultaneous exposures with stars. We have therefore adopted a calibration procedure that uses simultaneous star / Fabry Pérot etalon exposures in combination with a cross-calibration between the etalons and hollow-cathode lamps during daytime. With this strategy it has been possible to achieve 1-2 m/s precision in the visible and 5-10 m/s precision in the near-IR; further improvements are expected from ongoing work on temperature control, calibration procedures and data reduction. Comparing the RV precision achieved in different wavelength bands, we find a ¿sweet spot¿ between 0.7 and 0.8¿m, where deep TiO bands provide rich RV information in mid-M dwarfs. This is in contrast to our pre-survey models, which predicted comparatively better performance in the near-IR around 1¿m, and explains in part why our near-IR RVs do not reach the same precision level as those taken with the visible spectrograph. We are now conducting a large survey of 340 nearby M dwarfs (with an average distance of only 12pc), with the goal of finding terrestrial planets in their habitable zones. We have detected the signatures of several previously known or suspected planets and also discovered several new planets. We find that the radial velocity periodograms of many M dwarfs show several significant peaks. The development of robust methods to distinguish planet signatures from activity-induced radial velocity jitter is therefore among our priorities. Due to its large wavelength coverage, the CARMENES survey is generating a unique data set for studies of M star atmospheres, rotation, and activity. The spectra cover important diagnostic lines for activity (H alpha, Na I D1 and D2, and the Ca II infrared triplet), as well as FeH lines, from which the magnetic field can be inferred. Correlating the time series of these features with each other, and with wavelength-dependent radial velocities, provides excellent handles for the discrimination between planetary companions and stellar radial velocity jitter. Whether BDs form as stars through gravitational collapse ("star-like") or BDs and some very low-mass stars constitute a separate population which form alongside stars comparable to the population of planets, e.g. through circumstellar disk ("peripheral") fragmentation, is one of the key questions of the star-formation problem. For young stars in Taurus-Auriga the binary fraction is large with little dependence on primary mass above ~0.2Msun, while for BDs it is, accepted for publication in A&A, 11 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

We present a study of age-related spectral signatures observed in 25 young low-mass objects that we have previously determined as possible kinematic members of five young moving groups: the Local Association (Pleiades moving group, age = 20-150 Myr), the Ursa Major group (Sirius supercluster, age = 300 Myr), the Hyades supercluster (age = 600 Myr), IC 2391 supercluster (age = 35-55 Myr) and the Castor moving group (age = 200 Myr). In this paper we characterize the spectral properties of observed high- or low-resolution spectra of our kinematic members by fitting theoretical spectral distributions. We study signatures of youth, such as lithium i 6708A, H alpha emission and other age-sensitive spectroscopic signatures in order to confirm the kinematic memberships through age constraints. We find that 21 (84 per cent) targets show spectroscopic signatures of youth in agreement with the age ranges of the moving group to which membership is implied. For two further objects, age-related constraints remain difficult to determine from our analysis. In addition, we confirm two moving group kinematic candidates as brown dwarfs.

The INT Photometric H-Alpha Survey (IPHAS) is a 1800 deg^2 survey of the Northern Galactic Plane, reaching down to r'~21. We demonstrate how the survey can be used to (1) reliably select classical T Tauri star candidates and (2) constrain the mass accretion rates with an estimated relative uncertainty of 0.6 dex. IPHAS is a necessary addition to spectroscopic surveys because it allows large and uniform samples of accretion rates to be obtained with a precise handle on the selection effects. We apply the method on a region of 7 deg^2 towards the HII region IC1396 in Cepheus OB2 and identify 158 pre-main sequence candidates with masses between 0.2 and 2.0 Msun and accretion rates between 10^-9.2 and 10^-7.0 Msun yr^-1. We find a power-law dependency between the stellar mass and the accretion rates with a slope of \alpha = 1.1 +/- 0.2, which is less steep than indicated by previous studies. We discuss the influence of method-dependent systematic effects on the determination of this relationship. The majority of our sample consists of faint, previously unknown, low-mass T Tauri candidates (56 per cent between 0.2 and 0.5 Msun). Many candidates are clustered in front of three bright-rimmed molecular clouds, which are being ionized by the massive star HD206267 (O6.5V). We discover a spatio-temporal gradient of increasing accretion rates, increasing Spitzer infrared excess, and younger ages away from the ionizing star, providing a strong indication that the formation of these clusters has been sequentially triggered by HD206267 during the last ~1 Myr.

Aims: We investigated in detail nine sources in the direction of the young sigma Orionis cluster, which is considered a unique site for studying stellar and substellar formation. The nine sources were selected because of some peculiar properties, such as extremely red infrared colours or too strong Halpha emission for their blue optical colours. Methods: We took high-quality, low-resolution spectroscopy (R ~ 500) of the nine targets with ALFOSC at the Nordic Optical Telescope. We also re-analyzed [24]-band photometry from MIPS/Spitzer and compiled the best photometry available at the ViJHKs passbands and the four IRAC/Spitzer channels for constructing accurate spectral energy distributions covering from 0.55 to 24 mum. Results: The nine targets were classified into: one Herbig Ae/Be star with a scatterer edge-on disc, two G-type stars, one X-ray flaring, early-M, young star with chromospheric Halpha emission, one very low-mass, accreting, young spectroscopic binary, two young objects at the brown dwarf boundary with the characteristics of classical T Tauri stars, and two emission-line galaxies, one undergoing star formation, and another one whose spectral energy distribution is dominated by an active galactic nucleus. Besides, we discover three infrared sources associated to overdensities in a cold cloud in the cluster centre. Conclusions: Low-resolution spectroscopy and spectral energy distributions are a vital tool for measuring the physical properties and the evolution of young stars and candidates in the sigma Orionis cluster., Accepted for publication in A&A

The young $\sigma$-Orionis cluster is an important location for understanding the formation and evolution of stars, brown dwarfs, and planetary-mass objects. Its metallicity, although being a fundamental parameter, has not been well determined yet. We present the first determination of the metallicity of nine young late-type stars in $\sigma$-Orionis. Using the optical and near-infrared broadband photometry available in the literature we derive the effective temperatures for these nine cluster stars, which lie in the interval 4300--6500 K (1--3 \Msuno). These parameters are employed to compute a grid of synthetic spectra based on the code MOOG and Kurucz model atmospheres. We employ a $\chi^2$-minimization procedure to derive the stellar surface gravity and atmospheric abundances of Al, Ca, Si, Fe, Ni and Li, using multi-object optical spectroscopy taken with WYFFOS+AF2 at at the William Herschel Telescope ($\lambda/\delta\lambda\sim7500$). The average metallicity of the $\sigma$-Orionis cluster is [Fe/H] $ = -0.02\pm0.09\pm0.13$ (random and systematic errors). The abundances of the other elements, except lithium, seem to be consistent with solar values. Lithium abundances are in agreement with the "cosmic" $^7$Li abundance, except for two stars which show a $\log \epsilon(\mathrm{Li})$ in the range 3.6--3.7 (although almost consistent within the error bars). There are also other two stars with $\log \epsilon(\mathrm{Li})\sim 2.75$. We derived an average radial velocity of the $\sigma$-Orionis cluster of $28\pm4$km/s. [Abridged] As part of our on-going investigation of magnetic activity in ultracool dwarfs we present simultaneous radio, X-ray, UV, and optical observations of LSR1835+32 (M8.5), and simultaneous X-ray and UV observations of VB10 (M8), both with a duration of about 9 hours. LSR1835+32 exhibits persistent radio emission and H-alpha variability on timescales of ~0.5-2 hr. The detected UV flux is consistent with photospheric emission, and no X-ray emission is detected to a deep limit of L_X/L_bol2x10^4. Similarly, L_Halpha/L_X>10 is at least 30 times larger than in early M dwarfs, and eliminates coronal emission as the source of chromospheric heating. The lack of radio variability during four rotations of LSR1835+32 requires a uniform stellar-scale field of ~10 G, and indicates that the H-alpha variability is dominated by much smaller scales, 25 km/s., Submitted to ApJ

[Abridged] We present the first simultaneous radio, X-ray, ultraviolet, and optical spectroscopic observations of the M8.5 dwarf TVLM513-46546, with a duration of 9 hours. These observations are part of a program to study the origin of magnetic activity in ultracool dwarfs, and its impact on chromospheric and coronal emission. Here we detect steady quiescent radio emission superposed with multiple short-duration, highly polarized flares; there is no evidence for periodic bursts previously reported for this object, indicating their transient nature. We also detect soft X-ray emission, with L_X/L_bol~10^-4.9, the faintest to date for any object later than M5, and a possible weak X-ray flare. TVLM513-46546 continues the trend of severe violation of the radio/X-ray correlation in ultracool dwarfs, by nearly 4 orders of magnitude. From the optical spectroscopy we find that the Balmer line luminosity exceeds the X-ray luminosity by a factor of a few, suggesting that, unlike in early M dwarfs, chromospheric heating may not be due to coronal X-ray emission. More importantly, we detect a sinusoidal H-alpha light curve with a period of 2 hr, matching the rotation period of TVLM513-46546. This is the first known example of such Balmer line behavior, which points to a co-rotating chromospheric hot spot or an extended magnetic structure, with a covering fraction of about 50%. This feature may be transitory based on the apparent decline in light curve peak during the four observed maxima. From the radio data we infer a large scale steady magnetic field of ~100 G, in good agreement with the value required for confinement of the X-ray emitting plasma. The radio flares, on the other hand, are produced in a component of the field with a strength of ~3 kG and a likely multi-polar configuration., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

We report new nearby L and late-M dwarfs (d_phot = 3.0, later than M8.0) at low Galactic latitude (|b| =M8.0), L, and T dwarfs with accurate trigonometric parallaxes to calibrate the M_J versus I-J colour-luminosity relation. The resulting photometric distances have standard errors of ~15%, which we used to select candidates d_phot

(Abridged) We aim at measuring the near-infrared photometry, and deriving the mass, age, temperature, and surface gravity of WISE J085510.74-071442.5 (J0855-0714), which is the coolest known object beyond the Solar System as of today. We use publicly available data from the archives of the HST and the VLT to determine the emission of this source at 1.153 micron (F110W) and 1.575 micron (CH_4). J0855-0714 is detected at both wavelengths with signal-to-noise ratio of ~10 (F110W) and ~4 (CH_4-off) at the peak of the corresponding PSFs. This is the first detection of J0855-0714 in the H-band. We measure 26.31 +/- 0.10 and 23.22 +/- 0.35 mag in F110W and CH_4 (Vega system). J0855-0714 remains unresolved in the HST images that have a spatial resolution of 0.22". Companions at separations of 0.5 AU (similar brightness) and at ~1 AU (~1 mag fainter in the F110W filter) are discarded. By combining the new data with published photometry, we build the spectral energy distribution of J0855-0714 from 0.89 to 22.09 micron, and contrast it against state-of-the-art solar-metallicity models of planetary atmospheres. We determine a temperature of 225-250 K, a bolometric luminosity of log L/Lsol = -8.57, and a high surface gravity of log g = 5.0 (cm/s2), which suggests an old age although such a high gravity is not fully compatible with evolutionary models. After comparison with the cooling theory for brown dwarfs and planets, we infer a mass in the interval 2-10 Mjup for ages of 1-12 Gyr and log g > 3.5 (cm/s2). At the age of the Sun, J0855-0714 would be a ~5-Mjup free-floating planetary-mass object. J0855-0714 may represent the old image of the free-floating planetary-mass objects of similar mass discovered in star-forming regions and young stellar clusters. As many J0855-0714-like objects as M5-L2 stars may be expected to populate the solar neighborhood., Accepted for publication in A&A

We used the OSIRIS camera at the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) to monitor the astrometric motion of the L4.5 dwarf 2M1821$+$14 over 17 months. The astrometric residuals of eleven epochs have a r.m.s. dispersion of 0.4 mas, which is larger than the average precision of 0.23 mas per epoch and hints towards an additional signal or excess noise. Comparison of the point-spread-functions in OSIRIS and FORS2/VLT images reveals no differences critical for high-precision astrometry, despite the GTC's segmented primary mirror. We attribute the excess noise to an unknown effect that may be uncovered with additional data. For 2M1821$+$14, we measured a relative parallax of $106.15 \pm 0.18$ mas and determined a correction of $0.50\pm0.05$ mas to absolute parallax, leading to a distance of $9.38 \pm0.03$ pc. We excluded at 3-$\sigma$ confidence the presence of a companion to 2M1821$+$14 down to a mass ratio of 0.1 ($\approx 5\, M_\mathrm{Jupiter}$) with a period of 50--1000 days and a separation of 0.1--0.7 au. The accurate parallax allowed us to estimate the age and mass of 2M1821$+$14 of 120--700 Myr and 0.049$^{+0.014}_{-0.024}$ M$_\odot$, thus confirming its intermediate age and substellar mass. We complement our study with a parallax and proper motion catalogue of 587 stars ($i'\simeq15.5-22$) close to 2M1821$+$14, used as astrometric references. This study demonstrates sub-mas astrometry with the GTC, a capability applicable for a variety of science cases including the search for extrasolar planets and relevant for future astrometric observations with E-ELT and TMT., Comment: 14 pages, 21 figures. Using astrometric measurements obtained with the FORS2/VLT camera, we are searching for low-mass companions around 20 nearby ultracool dwarfs. With a single-measurement precision of 0.1 milli-arcseconds, our survey is sensitive to a wide range of companion masses from planetary companions to binary systems. Here, we report the discovery and orbit characterisation of a new ultracool binary at a distance of 19.5 pc from Earth that is composed of the M8.5-dwarf primary DE0630-18 and a substellar companion. The nearly edge-on orbit is moderately eccentric (e=0.23) with an orbital period of 1120 d, which corresponds to a relative separation in semimajor axis of approximately 1.1 AU. We obtained a high-resolution optical spectrum with UVES/VLT and measured the system's heliocentric radial velocity. The spectrum does not exhibit lithium absorption at 670.8 nm, indicating that the system is not extremely young. A preliminary estimate of the binary's physical parameters tells us that it is composed of a primary at the stellar-substellar limit and a massive brown-dwarf companion. DE0630-18 is a new very low-mass binary system with a well-characterised orbit., 4 pages, 7 figures. Accepted for publication in A&A

A full understanding of the properties of substellar objects is one of the major challenges facing astrophysics. Since their discovery in 1995, hundreds of brown dwarfs and extrasolar planets have been discovered. While these discoveries have enabled important comparisons with theory, observational progress has been much more rapid than the theoretical understanding of cool atmospheres. The reliable determination of mass, abundances, gravities and temperatures is not yet possible. The key problem is that substellar objects emit their observable radiation in the infrared region of the spectrum where our knowledge of atomic, molecular and line broadening data is poor. Here we report on the status of our PoSSO (Physics of SubStellar Objects) project. In order to understand brown dwarfs and extrasolar planets increasing more like those in our solar system, we are studying a wide range of processes. Here we give an update on the project and sketch an outline of atoms, molecules and processes requiring study.

We present the first simultaneous, multi-wavelength observations of an L dwarf, the L3.5 candidate brown dwarf 2MASS J00361617+1821104, conducted with the Very Large Array, the Chandra X-ray Observatory, and the Kitt Peak 4-m telescope. We detect strongly variable and periodic radio emission (P=3 hr) with a fraction of about 60% circular polarization. No X-ray emission is detected to a limit of L_X/L_{bol}, Submitted to ApJ; 26 pages, 15 figures

We present here the results of astrometric, photometric and spectroscopic observations leading to the determination of the orbit and dynamical masses of the binary L dwarf 2MASSW J0746425+2000321. High angular resolution observations spread over almost 4 years and obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT), and a the W. M. Keck Observatory (Keck) allow us to cover 36% of the period, corresponding to 60% of the orbit, and, for the first time, to derive a precise estimate of the total and individual masses of such a late-type object. We find an orbital period of 3850.9$^{+904}_{-767}$ days. The corresponding total mass is 0.146$^{+0.016}_{-0.006}$ M$_{\sun}$, with uncertainties depending on the distance. Spatially resolved low resolution optical (550--1025 nm) spectra have been obtained with HST/STIS, allowing us to measure the spectral types of the two components (L0$\pm$0.5 for the primary and L1.5$\pm$0.5 for the secondary). We also present precise photometry of the individual components measured on the high angular resolution images obtained with HST/ACS and WFPC2 (visible), VLT/NACO (J, H and Ks bands) and Keck I (Ks) band). These spectral and photometric measurements enable us to estimate their effective temperatures and mass ratio, and to place the object accurately in a H--R diagram. The binary system is most likely formed by a primary with a mass of 0.085$\pm$0.010 M$_{\sun}$ and a secondary with a mass of 0.066$\pm$0.006 M$_{\sun}$, thus clearly substellar, for an age of approximately 300$\pm$150 Myr. We have performed a photometric search for brown dwarf candidates in Taurus using the CFH12K wide-field mosaic camera. We are in the process of obtaining follow-up spectroscopy of likely brown dwarf candidates. We summarize the current state of the photometric analysis and the optical spectroscopy obtained to date. We also discuss the evidence for accretion in these systems.

We have observed lID 101177B and 149414A, two known single-lined binaries, and directly measured the radial velocities of their secondaries, enabling us to derive the mass ratios of the two systems. Using high signal-to-noise ratio spectra obtained mostly with the William Herschel Telescope, and a new algorithm to analyse composite spectra, TODCOR, we show that the mass ratios of lID 101177B and 149414A are 0.48 ± 0.03 and 0.57 ± 0.02, respectively. These are two of the lowest mass ratios ever measured around normal G or K dwarf stars. These two systems demonstrate the potential of the present approach, which can turn many of the known single-lined binaries into double-lined systems. Such work has important implica­ tions for the study of the mass-ratio distribution of many samples of binaries.

In order to compile a sample of ultracool dwarfs that will serve as benchmarks for testing theoretical formation and evolutionary models, we selected low-mass cool (>M7) objects that are potentially members of five known young Moving Groups in the solar neighbourhood. We have studied the kinematics of the sample,finding that 49 targets belong to the young disk area, from which 36 are kinematic member of one of the five moving groups under study. Some of the identified low- mass members have been spectroscopically characterised (Teff , log g) and confirmed as young members through a detailed study of age indicators.

(abridged) We present a near-infrared (NIR) photometric variability study of the candidate protoplanet, TMR-1C, located at a separation of about 10" (~1000 AU) from the Class I protobinary TMR-1AB in the Taurus molecular cloud. Our campaign was conducted between October, 2011, and January, 2012. We were able to obtain 44 epochs of observations in each of the H and Ks filters. Based on the final accuracy of our observations, we do not find any strong evidence of short-term NIR variability at amplitudes of >0.15-0.2 mag for TMR-1C or TMR-1AB. Our present observations, however, have reconfirmed the large-amplitude long-term variations in the NIR emission for TMR-1C, which were earlier observed between 1998 and 2002, and have also shown that no particular correlation exists between the brightness and the color changes. TMR-1C became brighter in the H-band by ~1.8 mag between 1998 and 2002, and then fainter again by ~0.7 mag between 2002 and 2011. In contrast, it has persistently become brighter in the Ks-band in the period between 1998 and 2011. The (H-Ks) color for TMR-1C shows large variations, from a red value of 1.3+/-0.07 and 1.6+/-0.05 mag in 1998 and 2000, to a much bluer color of -0.1+/-0.5 mag in 2002, and then again a red color of 1.1+/-0.08 mag in 2011. The observed variability from 1998 to 2011 suggests that TMR-1C becomes fainter when it gets redder, as expected from variable extinction, while the brightening observed in the Ks-band could be due to physical variations in its inner disk structure. The NIR colors for TMR-1C obtained using the high precision photometry from 1998, 2000, and 2011 observations are similar to the protostars in Taurus, suggesting that it could be a faint dusty Class I source. Our study has also revealed two new variable sources in the vicinity of TMR-1AB, which show long-term variations of ~1-2 mag in the NIR colors between 2002 and 2011., Accepted in A&A

The super-earth planet GJ 1214b has recently been the focus of several studies, using the transit spectroscopy technique, trying to determine the nature of its atmosphere. Here we focus on the Halpha line as a tool to further restrict the nature of GJ1214's atmosphere. We used the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) OSIRIS instrument to acquire narrow band photometry with tunable filters. With our observations, we were able to observe the primary transit of the super-Earth GJ 1214b in three bandpasses: two centered in the continuum around Halpha (653.5 nm and 662.0 nm) and one centered at the line core (656.3 nm). We measure the depth of the planetary transit at each wavelength interval.By fitting analytic models to the measured light curves we were able to compute the depth of the transit at the three bandpasses. Taking the difference in the computed planet to star radius ratio between the line and the comparison continuum filters, we find Delta (Rp/Rstar)_{Halpha-653.5} = (6.60 +/- 3.54) 10^-3 and Delta (Rp/Rstar)_{Halpha-662.0} = (3.30 +/- 3.61) 10^-3. Although the planet radius is found to be larger in the Halpha line than in the surrounding continuum, the quality of our observations and the sigma level of the differences (1.8 and 1.0, respectively) does not allow us to claim an Halpha excess in GJ1214's atmosphere. The aim of the project is to improve our knowledge on the low-mass and low-metallicity population to investigate the influence of metallicity of the stellar (and substellar) mass function. We present the results of a photometric and proper motion search aimed at unearthing ultracool subdwarfs in large-scale surveys. We employed and combined the UKIDSS LAS DR5 and the SDSS DR7 complemented with ancillary data from 2MASS, DENIS and SuperCOSMOS. The SDSS DR7 vs UKIDSS LAS DR5 search returned a total of 32 ultracool subdwarf candidates, only two being recognised as a subdwarf in the literature. Twenty-seven candidates were followed-up spectroscopically in the optical between 600 and 1000 nm. We confirmed 20 candidates as subdwarfs, extreme subdwarfs or ultra-subdwarfs with spectral types later than M5; this represents a success rate of ~60%. Among those 20 new subdwarfs, we identified 2 early-L subdwarfs very likely located within 100 pc that we propose as templates for future searches because they are the first examples of their subclass. Another 7 sources are solar-metallicity M dwarfs with spectral types between M4 and M7 without Halpha emission, suggesting that they are old M dwarfs. The remaining 5 candidates do not have spectroscopic follow-up yet; only 1 remains as a bona-fide ultracool subdwarf after revision of their proper motions. We assigned spectral types based on the current classification schemes and, when possible, we measured their radial velocities. Using the limited number of subdwarfs with trigonometric parallaxes, we estimated distances between 90 and 600 for the new subdwarfs. We provide mid-infrared photometry from WISE for two subdwarfs and discuss their colours. We present an approach to improve the radial velocity precision of NIRSPEC data (spectral resolution R = λ/Δλ ≈ 22,000) by using a self-calibration approach. We demonstrate that the accuracy can be significantly improved by deconvolving the spectra and using the telluric lines as a long-term stable wavelength reference.

High-resolution spectroscopy in the near-infrared could become the leading method for discovering extra-solar planets around very low-mass stars and brown dwarfs. To help to achieve an accuracy of about 1 m/s, we are developing a gas cell which consists of a mixture of gases whose absorption spectral lines span all over the near-infrared region. We here present a summary of the working technique and the main results obtained so far.

This paper discusses benchmark brown dwarfs in various environments, and focuses on those in wide binary systems. We present a summary of the recently discovered T dwarf population from the UKIDSS Large Area Survey, and describe the constraints that it places on our knowledge of the sub-stellar initial mass function. We also present some exciting results from our ongoing search for wide companions to this sample, that has so far revealed an M4-T8.5 binary system at ∼12 parsecs and also the first ever Tdwarf-white dwarf binary system. The T dwarfs in these binaries have their properties constrained by the primary object and are thus benchmark objects that are already testing the predictions of theoretical model atmospheres.

Massive far-red and infrared imaging surveys in different bandpasses are the main contributors to the discovery of brown dwarfs. The Virtual Observatory represents an adequate framework to handle these vast datasets efficiently and filter them out according to specific requirements. A statistically significant number of BDs is mandatory for understanding their general properties better for identifing peculiar objects. WISE, an all-sky survey in the mid-infrared, provides an excellent opportunity to increase the number of BDs significantly, in particular those at the lower end of the temperature scale. We aim to demonstrate that VO tools are efficient in identifing and characterizing BDs by cross-correlating public catalogues released by large surveys. Using VO tools we performed a cross-match of the WISE Preliminary Release, the 2MASS Point Source and the SDSS Data Release 7 catalogues over the whole area of sky that they have in common ($\sim$ 4000 deg$^{2}$). Photometric and proper motion criteria were used to obtain a list of BD candidates. A temperature estimate is provided for each candidate based on their spectral energy distribution using VOSA, a VO tool for SED fitting. We derive the spectral types from the effective temperatures. Distances, calculated from the absolute magnitude- spectral type relation, place our candidates at 14-80 pc from the Sun, assuming that they are single. We have identified 31 BD candidates, 25 of which have already been reported in the literature. The remaining six candidates have been classified as L- (four) and T-type (two) objects. The high rate of recovery of known BDs ($\sim$ 90% of the T dwarfs catalogued in 2MASS) demonstrates the validity of our strategy to identify them with VO tools., Comment: Accepted in A&A. 5 pages, 3 figures and 1 table

In their HST/NICMOS observations, Terebey et al. 1998 detected a candidate protoplanet, TMR-1C, that lies at a separation of about 10" (~1000 AU) from the Class I protobinary TMR-1 (IRAS 04361+2547). A narrow filament-like structure was observed extending south-east from the central proto-binary system towards TMR-1C, suggesting a morphology in which the candidate protoplanet may have been ejected from the TMR-1 system. Follow-up low-resolution spectroscopy could not confirm if this object is a protoplanet or a low-luminosity background star. We present two epochs of near-infrared photometric observations obtained at the CFHT of TMR-1C. The time span of ~7 years between the two sets of observations provides with an opportunity to, (a) check for any photometric variability similar to that observed among young stellar objects, which would indicate the youth of this source, and, (b) determine the proper motion. TMR-1C displays large photometric variability between 1 and 2 mag in both the H- and Ks-bands. From our 2002 observations, we find a (H-Ks) color of 0.3 mag, which is much bluer than the value of 1.3 mag reported by T98 from HST observations. Also, we observe brightening in both the H- and Ks-bands when the colors are bluer, i.e. the object gets redder as it becomes fainter. We have explored the possible origins for the observed variability, and find extinction due to the presence of circumstellar material to be the most likely scenario. The observed large-amplitude photometric variations, and the possible presence of a circumstellar disk, are strong arguments against this object being an old background star., Comment: Accepted in A&A

This review presents a panorama of the research topics that are currently being developed by our strategic research group at the IAC in the field of very low-mass stars, brown dwarfs, extrasolar giant planets and the solar system. Our main goal is to investigate the cosmogony of the least massive stellar and substellar component of the Milky Way. We are using multiwavelength observations and theoretical modeling to provide constrains to different scenarios of star and planet formation. We present summaries of the following results: (1) the study of a deeply-embedded low-mass protostar in the B59 molecular cloud; (2) the discovery of accreting very low-mass objects in the IPHAS survey; (3) the identification of faint planetary-mass candidates in the cores of young open clusters using multi-conjugate adaptive optics; (4) the discovery of a widely separated companion of a young brown dwarf; (5) the search for reflected light from hot Jupiters; and (6) the spectroscopic study of relics of the formation of our Solar System.

Conquista in Jovellanos,Matanzas province. First symptoms in the field consisted of yellowing ofthe lower leaves of plants leading to defoliation and early maturation.Symptomsontheuppersideofleavesconsistedofyellowspotsthatturnedbrown then necrotic, surrounded by wide yellow areas. Uredinia devel-oped on the undersides of the leaves. Anamorphic sori (Malupa-type)were amphigenous, circular, minute, pulverulent, whitish becoming palecinnamon-brown,scatteredoringroupsondiscolouredspots,subepider-mal becoming erumpent, cone-like, 1–2 mm diameter, surrounded byparaphyses, with a central opening. Paraphyses were cylindrical toclavate,25–45 lm(morefrequently37AE5 lm) · 6–14 lm,slightlythick-enedattheapex,7AE5–17AE5(12AE5) lm,colourlesstopaleyellowish-brown.Uredinospores were sessile, obovoid to broadly ellipsoidal, 25–35(28) · 17–22AE5 (18AE7) lm; wall 1–1AE5 lm thick, minutely and denselyechinulate, colourless to pale yellowish brown, sometimes pale cinna-mon-brownwithage.A positive reaction was obtained when sap from rust-affected leaveswas tested with immunological test sticks containing a specific antibodyto P. pachyrhizi, (QuickStix). Real-time PCR was conducted on sapfrom affected leaves using SYBR green as label and the specific primersdeveloped by Frederick et al. (2002) for the diagnosis of each species.The results of the PCR confirmed the presence of both P. pachyrhizi andP. meibomiae causing mixed infections within the same plant, althoughhigher concentrations of DNA of P. pachyrhizi were noted, presumablydue to the faster growing and more aggressive nature of this species.According to Bromfield (1984), P. meibomiae was previously reportedin Cuba in 1926, but there were no further records of its presence insoybeans and other legumes since this time. This is the first reportof Phakopsora pachyrhizi attacking soybeans in Cuba and theconfirmation by advanced diagnostic procedures of the presence ofP. meibomiae.References
