Abstract: Charm D-meson production in 360 GeV π−p interactions has been studied using the high-resolution hydrogen bubble chamber LEBC and the European Hybrid Spectrometer. The data show evidence for leading quark effects both in the number of D-meson types and in the Feynman x distributions. The production cross section is of the form d 2 δ d x d p T 2 ∞(1-x) n exp (-ap T 2 ) with n = 2.8±0.8 and a = 1.1±0.3 (GeV/c)−2. The x distribution is, however, compatible with the presence of both central (n = 6) and leading (n = 1) D / D production. The fraction of D-messons in the leading component is estimated to be ≈30%. The rapidity gap between members of reconstructed charm pairs is small compared to the available rapidity range. The inclusive cross section for single D-messons in the forward direction is: δ(D/ D )=(40 8 +15 )μ b ( for x>0) .

Abstract: Charm data from 360 GeV/c π− p interactions are used to give results on D-meson branching ratios. The analysis is based on 114 charm events containing 183 observed charm particle decays. We present topological branching ratios and decay multiplicities, as well as the following inclusive branching ratios of D-mesons: B( D ± → K ∓ + anything ) = 0.16 −0.07 +0.08 , if B( D 0 → K ± + anything ) = 0.44 −0.10 +0.11 , ifB( D ± → e ± + 2,4 (rmcharged hadrons) = 0.07 −0.05 ++0.08 , B( D 0 → e ± + anything ) = 0.17 −0.06 +0.08 .

Abstract: Bose-Einstein correlations among identically charged pions produced in pp collisions at 400 GeV/c are studied using the EHS spectrometer. Employing the Kopylov-Podgoretskii parametrization, the average size of the emitting region r(k) and its lifetime tau for pion production were determined to be r(k) = 1.71 +/- 0.04 fm and c-tau = 0.89 +/- 0.05 fm. The average size r(g) in terms of the Lorentz invariant Goldhaber parametrization was determined to be r(g) = 1.20 +/- 0.03 fm. A decrease of the size with increasing momentum of the pions was observed. The size and the incoherence parameter of the pion emitting region were determined as a function of the charged particle multiplicity and the momentum of the pions. Identified charged kaons were used to study Bose-Einstein correlations among identically charged kaons K+/- K+/-. The average size of the emitting region for kaon production was determined to be r(k) = 1.87 +/- 0.33 fm in terms of the Kopylov-Podgoretskii parametrization. A study of the influence of a reference sample is presented.

Abstract: Feynmanx distributions for the inclusive reactionsP+P→hadron+anything at 360 GeV/c are analyzed in terms of a quark-diquark fragmentation model. The proton is assumed to be composed either of a quark and a diquark or of three independent quarks. The model tested includes a hadronization part for which we use the Field-Feynman and LUND fragmentation functions. The model with diquarks gives a better description of our experimental data; in particular forP+P→Λ0+anything, the model without diquarks fails to reproduce the data.

Abstract: Inclusive production of vector and tensor mesons is studied in a K−p experiment at 32 GeV/c in the MIRABELLE bubble chamber. The K∗0(890), ϱ0 and ω cross sections are comparable, about 4 mb each. The K∗0(1420 and cross sections are also comparable, about 1 mb each. The K∗o+(890), Φ, K∗o−(1420) and f cross sections beam fragmentation; ϱ production is almost forward-backward symmetric in the c.m.s. The pT production slopes of K∗o−(890) and ϱ are similar, the Φ slope is shallower. Vector and tensor mesons alone are responsible for ≅50% (≅60%) of final-state pions

Abstract: Multiplicity distributions in various rapidity intervals for charged particles produced in collisions of 360 GeV/c protons with aluminium (Al) and gold (Au) targets are presented. The data were analysed separately for the forward and backward hemispheres. Each distribution is well described by a negative binomial distribution. The experimental distributions are compared with the predictions of the multichain model calculated by the Monte Carlo program MCMHA in which the intranuclear cascade process is included, and also with the Lund Monte Carlo FRITIOF. The results of MCMHA reproduce quite well the multiplicity distributions for various rapidity intervals.

Abstract: In an experiment with 360 GeV/ c π − beam at the CERN SPS using the high resolution hydrogen bubble chamber LEBC and the European Hybrid Spectrometer, an event has been observed of the type π − p → D 0 D 0 + 8 prongs. The fully reconstructed decay modes are D 0 → K − π + π 0 π 0 and D 0 → K + π + π − π − , with all six charged tracks being detected in the spectrometer and all four photons from the π 0 decays detected in the lead glass gamma detection system. The D 0 has momentum 119.0 ± 0.6 GeV/ c , x F = 0.31, length 4.1 ± 0.1 mm and proper lifetime (2.1 ± 0.1) × 10 −13 s. The D 0 has momentum 78.5 ± 0.3 GeV/ c , x F = 0.19, length 7.5 ± 0.1 mm and proper lifetime (5.9 ± 0.1) × 10 −13 s.

Abstract: The general features of pp interactions at 32 GeV/c are analysed in a bubble chamber experiment with a statistics of 5.2 μb/event. The inclusive production of neutral strange particles and pions is analysed and compared to results obtained at other energies and in pp interactions. Total cross sections are determined for various 4C reactions and the relative contributions of diffractive dissociation and ΔΔ production to the reaction pp→ppπ+π− are estimated.

Abstract: Correlations among identically charged pions were measured for pions produced inp p collisions at 360 GeV/c using the EHS spectrometer. The effective radius for pion production was determined to be 1.02±0.20 fm with a chaoticity factor 0.32±0.08. We attempted to obtain the radii in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the beam axis and found no difference between them. No multiplicity dependence of the radius was observed at this energy. A peak near zero in the four momentum transfer distribution showed significant deviation from a single Gaussian. The results of an analysis of the three like pion enhancement were consistent with those for two pions.

Abstract: We present the inclusive and semi-inclusive production of protons, π+, π−, for the full range of kinematic variables, from 7850 inelastic interactions obtained in the 4.7 m liquid-hydrogen bubble chamber Mirabelle at the Serpukhov accelerator and with an incident proton beam of 69 GeV/c. We compare the data with those at other energies, and we give the results of different phenomenological fits.

Abstract: Cross sections and charged multiplicity distributions for π+p,K+p andpp interactions at 250 GeV/c are presented and compared to each other as well as to earlier (for π+p andK+p lower energy) data. Consistently, the meson-proton (M+p) data have narrower multiplicity distributions and higher average multiplicity thanpp data. Up to our energy, generalized KNO functions describe the energy dependence of the shape of the multiplity distribution with one parameter forM+p and one forpp collisions. If interpreted in terms of negative binomials, the parameter 1/k tends to be slightly lower forM+p than forpp data. For both types of hadron-hadron collision, 1/k is larger than fore+e− andlp collisions.

Abstract: An analysis of event-shape structure in momentum space is presented in non-diffractive proton-proton interactions at s=26 GeV. The data have been compared with those obtained in other low-pT hadronic collisions and also with those from e+e− annihilations. The jet-like behaviour becomes more pronounced at higher CM energies in the low-pT hadron data. There is, however, no evidence of three-jet-like events in the present data as observed in e+e− annihilations.

Short-range correlations in rapidity are present fory1⋍y2 in both cases; an enhancement is seen aroundy1=y2=±1. Correlations between transverse variables are linked to those in rapidity for π−π− combinations, whereas the effect is essentially kinematical for π+π−.

Abstract: The inclusive cross section and the average multiplicity are evaluated for most of the charged (π±, p, K±) and neutral (γ, π0, K0, K0, Λ, Λ, n) particles produced in 32 GeV/c K−p interactions; corresponding results are obtained for each charged topology separately. New results are given for the total charged multiplicity cross sections. The average longitudinal momentum of neutrals is found to be roughly equal to that of charged particles. The π+ and π− multiplicity distributions are reconstructed and compared to the π0 and to the total charged multiplicity distributions.

Abstract: The European Hybrid Spectrometer is described in its preliminary version for the NA16 charm experiment. The performance of the small hydrogen bubble chamber LEBC and the detectors of the spectrometer is discussed. In particular the combination of the bubble chamber information with the spectrometer data is described in detail. The track reconstruction efficiency is 90%. The precision with which vertices seen in the bubble chamber are reconstructed is around 10 μm and the two track resolution is 40 μm. Therefore very complex event configurations, in particular charm particle decays, can be reconstructed correctly.

Abstract: Antilambda production is studied inK−p interactions at 32 GeV/c. Both total and differential cross sections are presented. The inclusive$\bar \Lambda $ production cross section amounts to 109±7 μb. A remarkable energy dependence is observed, σ($\bar \Lambda $) increasing by a factor of four between 14.3 and 32 GeV/c. Thep⊥2 distribution exhibits an exponential fall-off with a slope of 3.3±0.2 (GeV/c)−2. Most of the$\bar \Lambda $'s are emitted in the forward hemisphere. The invariantx distribution increases between 14.3 and 32 GeV/c. Data are presented for$\bar \Lambda $ production inK-p→Λ$\bar \Lambda $+XK-p→$\bar \Lambda $Kn+X, andK-p→$\bar \Lambda $p+X.

Abstract: Multiplicity distributions of all charged and of negative particles for non (single)-diffractive events in π+p and pp collisions at 250 GeV/c (s=22 GeV) are presented for various rapidity intervals. The data are well described by the negative binomial distribution. The π+p and pp data are different for full phase space, but similar for the central region. In the central region, the relation kch≈12 k− holds for all charged and negative multiplicities. This favours the interpretation in terms of cascade models above (partial) stimulated emission models.

Abstract: The inclusive cross sections for forward D meson production at s =26 GeV in π − p interactions have been measured to be: σ(π − p → D 0 / D 0 + X ) x F >0 = (10.1±2.2)μ b , σ(π − p → D ±+ X ) x F >0 = (5.7±1.6)μ b . The distribution in x F for all D and for x F >0 has the form d σ/ d x F =107 −37 +39 (1−x F ) 7.5 −1.7 +2.5 +5.4 −3.8 +6.0 (1−x F ) 0.7 −0.7 1.0 μ b , with evidence for leading D production. The p T 2 distribution is exponential with slope parameter [−1.18 −0.16 +0.18 ]( GeV / c) −2 . The data are compared with predictions from first-order quark/gluon fusion calculations.

Abstract: We investigate the main features of the reaction pp → ppπ+π− at 69 GeV/c from data obtained in the Mirabelle bubble chamber at Serpukhov. A search for a double pomeron exchange mechanism contribution leads to an upper limit of ⋍20 μ b for M(π + π − ) ⩽ 0.7 GeV under reasonable assumptions. The four-body final state is dominated by proton diffractive dissociation p → pπ+π− (mostly Δ++π−). The cross section for this process, as well as the t production slope and the decay distributions (of the Δ++) show little variation in comparison with lower energy data.

Abstract: A determination of branching ratios for D meson decays into all charged particle final states is reported. The values obtained: (D± → K∓π±π±/all D±) = (14 ± 6)% and ( D 0/D0 → K±π∓π+π−/all D 0/D0) = (10 ± 4)%, are higher than those currently accepted. This result, if confirmed, implies a corresponding reduction in the accepted values for some total cross section measurements. Revised inclusive cross sections for D meson production in the forward hemisphere in π−p and pp interactions at 360 GeV/c, are presented.

Abstract: Results are presented on the inclusive π± production in K−p interactions at 32.1 GeV/c. The invariant longitudinal distributions have been calculated both for π+ and π− in the backward c.m. hemisphere and extrapolated in the forward hemisphere under some physical assumptions. The inclusive cross sections for π+ and π− amount to 32.9 ± 1.5 mb and 35.0 ± 0.7 mb respectively. The energy dependence of the inclusive pion production has been analyzed in the framework of Mueller-Regge phenomenology both in the proton fragmentation and in the central region.

Abstract: Topological cross sections and average charge multiplicities 〈 n c 〉, are presented for 33.8 GeV/ c K − p and 50 GeV/ c π − p interactions observed in the 4.5 m Mirabelle hydrogen bubble chamber at Serpukhov. Values for 〈 n c 〉 of 5.16 ± 0.08 and 5.71 ± 0.13 were found for the K − p and π − p reactions, respectively. The two quantities 〈 n c 〉 and the correlation term ƒ; 2 have been tabulated for π ± p, K ± p, and pp reactions at various energies. It is shown that the energy variation of each of these two quantities is described by a universal curve when plotted against the Q -value of the reaction. The ratio 〈 n c 〉/ D , where D is the dispersion of the multiplicity distribution, is found to approach the constant value of 2 from above as the energy increases.

Abstract: A study of the length distribution of charged secondary interactions gives no evidence for the existence of charged anomalons in the products of the interactions of 360 GeV/ c π − and protons in hydrogen. Fits to the data yield 95% confidence level upper limits for anomalon production as a function of anomalon mean free path.

Abstract: A study of the properties of charm particles produced in 360 GeV/c π-p interactions is reported. The experiment was performed using the high resolution hydrogen bubble chamber LEBC in association with the European Hybrid Spectrometer at the CERN SPS. Details of the exposure and operation of the spectrometer are given and the methods used to extract the charm data are presented. The essential physics results on the decay properties (lifetime, branching ratios) as well as on the hadroproduction properties (cross sections forD,$\bar D$,F, Λc,D, correlations between charm particles) are given.

Abstract: The first data on the production of D ∗ (2010) are presented as observed in π − -proton interactions at √ s = 27 GeV . It is found that D ∗ (2010) dominates the total charm D-meson production, without a significant non-central component.

Abstract: Using a quark-diquark fragmentation model, in which either the Field-Feynman or the Lund model is coupled with a quark-diquark distribution function, we study transverse momentum distributions,p T, for the inclusive reactionspp→hadron +anything at 360 GeV/c. We find that a primordial mean transverse momentum 〈k T〉≃0.4 GeV/c can well reproduce thep T 2 distributions of charged hadrons, π0,K s 0 , Λ0,K * and Σ* and the Feynmanx−p T correlations. We confirm that a diquark in a proton plays an important role in reproducing thex−p T correlation of Λ0.

Abstract: We have measured the inclusive production properties of D and D messons produced from pp interactions at s =27.4 GeV . The differential production cross section is well represented by the empirical form d 2 σ d x F d P 2 T = 1 2 [σ ( D / D )(n+1)b](1−|x F |) n exp (−bp 2 T ) with n=4.9 ± 0.5, b=(1.0±0.1)( GeV /c) −2 , and the inclusive D / D cross section σ ( D / D ) is (30.2±3.3) ωb. The QCD fusion model predicts D / D production which is in good agreement with our data except for the magnitude of the cross section which depends sensitively on the assumed mass of the charm quark.

Abstract: In a study of proton-proton interactions at$\sqrt s = 26GeV$, inclusive distributions of single pions and systems of pions of various charge combinations are presented, as well as the production ratio obtained in association with various trigger particles. The results are compared to current phenomenological models in an attempt to understand multiparticle productions in hadron collisions.

Abstract: Based on a sample of 22 four-prong D 0 / D 0 decays produced in hydrogen by 360 GeV/ c π − , we present the following new results: mean lifetime τ = (3.5 −0.9 +1.4 ) x 10 −13 s ; production cross section for x F > 0.0, σ = (10.3 ± 3.5) ωb ; the D → K ± π ± π + π − branching ratio = (7.1 ± 2.5)%.

Abstract: Using data obtained with EHS equipped with the Rapid Cycling Bubble Chamber (RCBC) exposed to a proton beam of 360 GeV/c, we calculate topological cross sections. We present in great detail the procedure and the techniques used to correct raw data. Finally, we give multiplicity moments and multiplicity correlations and we compare the values obtained in our experiment, together with data at other energies, with different models.

Abstract: Charm D-meson production in 360 GeV pp interactions has been studied using the high-resolution hydrogen bubble chamber LEBC and the European Hybrid Spectrometer. D-mesons are produced with a differential cross section of the form d2σ dx dpT2δ(1-x)n exp (-apT2), withn=1.8± 0.8 and a=1.1±0.03 GeV/c-2 for the Feynman x and Transverse momentum pT behaviour. The inclusive partle prticle crossssection for D and D;measured to be: σ(D/ D ) = (56-12 25μb (for all x). The Λc D cross section can be estimated to be ≈20μb. No strong correlation is observed between DD pairs. The results are compared with results from a study of D-meaon production in 360 GeV/c π-p interactions also using LEBC-EHS. © 1983.

Abstract: D-meson lifetimes have been determined from decays observed in an exposure of the high resolution hydrogen bubble chamber LEBC in association with the European Hybrid Spectrometer (EHS) to an incident 360 GeV π− beam. Various techniques for lifetime determination are presented and the results compared. A new model-independent analysis based on the distribution in transverse decay length is introduced and preferred over other techniques. Best values are found to be: $$\begin{gathered} \tau (D^0 ) = \left( {4.1_{ - 0.3}^{ + 0.7} } \right) \times 10^{ - 13} s (60 decays) \hfill \\ \tau (D^ \pm ) = \left( {10.7_{ - 1.8}^{ + 2.8} } \right) \times 10^{ - 13} s (40 decays) \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ . The lifetime ratio is: $$T = \frac{{\tau (D^ \pm )}}{{\tau (D^0 )}} = 2.6_{ - 0.6}^{ + 0.8} $$ .

Abstract: Charm data from 360 GeV/c π−p and 400 GeV/cpp interactions are used to give results onD-meson branching ratios. The analysis is based on 438 charm events containing 608 spatially resolved charm particle decays. We present topological branching ratios, as well as the following inclusive branching ratios ofD-mesons into kaons: $$\begin{gathered} B(D^ \pm \to K^ \mp + anything) = 0.17 \pm 0.07, \hfill \\ B(D^ \pm \to K^ \pm + anything) = 0.08_{ - 0.05}^{ + 0.06} , \hfill \\ B(D^0 \to K^ \pm + anything) = 0.42 \pm 0.08, \hfill \\ B(D^0 \to K^ + + anything) = 0.03_{ - 0.02}^{ + 0.05} , \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ and the following semi-electronic branching ratios ofD-mesons: $$\begin{gathered} B(D^ \pm \to e^ \pm + anything) = 0.20_{ - 0.07}^{ + 0.09} , \hfill \\ B(D^0 \to e^ \pm + anything) = 0.15 \pm 0.05. \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$

Abstract: The inclusive production of vector mesons (charged ρ(770), ω(783), ϕ(1020) and neutralK*(892)) in π−p interactions at 360 GeV/c is studied. The data are based on 160 000 reconstructed events recorded in the NA 27 Experiment using the LEBC-EHS facility at CERN. The production cross sections in the forward hemisphere in c.m.s. and the longitudinal momentum distributions are determined. The results are compared with data obtained at lower energies.

Abstract: From the measurements of the inclusive production ratios between π - , K - and p at Feynman x = 0 in 360 GeV/ c pp interactions and using the predictions of the Lund fragmentation model, we determine the strangeness and diquark suppression factors and find γ s , l = 0.28 ± 0.03 and γ D , l = 0.063 ± 0.011 .

Abstract: We present the final results on the D-meson liftime measurements obtained by the NA27 experiment. From a sample of 145 D 0 D 0 and 149 D ± decays, we have measured τ (D 0 )=(4.6 +0.6 −0.5 )×10 −13 s, τ (D ± )=(11.2 +1.4 −1.1 )×10 −13 s, with a ratio R= τ( D ± ) τ( D 0 ) =2.4±0.4 .

Abstract: The final version of the European hybrid spectrometer (EHS) is described. EHS was used in the NA27 experiment to study charm particles produced in View the MathML source interactions. A rapid cycling, high resolution bubble chamber (LEBC) produced bubbles of 17 μm diameter which were measured with a precision of 2.5 μm. Short-lived charm particles are observed with an efficiency up to 90% (D±). The spectrometer accepts 70% of all particles produced, including approximately 100% of those in the forward hemisphere and the momenta of charged particles are measured to better than 1% over the whole momentum range. The charged particle identification detectors give information on 84% of the spectrometer tracks, half of which obtain unique identification. Two lead glass detectors measure the energy of electromagnetic showers such that the π0 mass distribution has a fwhm of View the MathML source. Hadronic showers are measured with two iron/scintillator calorimeters. The mass resolutions are 3.0, 0.9 and 11 View the MathML source for K0, Λ0 and D− charged particles respectively. The D0 mass is measured to be (1865.1 ± 1.8 ± 0.8) View the MathML source.

Abstract: Properties of proton diffractive dissociation have been investigated for four-prong final states in proton-proton reactions at 360 GeV/c, in particular forpp→ppπ +π− mπ 0(m=0,1,2). Mass distributions and decay angular distributions are given. The decay of the diffractive system is seen to be very anisotropic, and largep T is suppressed at higher masses. It is found that the “pomeron” couples with a single valence quark of the incident proton, but indications for a diquark-pomeron coupling are also found. Similarities with fragmentation in lepton-hadron deep inelastic scattering are underlined.

Abstract: We report on the Λc properties observed with the LEBC-EHS set-up at CERN SPS with 360 GeV c π − and 400 GeV c p beams. The lifetime is (1.2−0.3+0.5)×10−13 s and the mass (2284.7 ± 2.3 ± 0.5)MeV c 2 .
