Abstract

SrTiO3-cubic-like photocatalysts with average size of 35–40 nm were synthesized in 2 h without further calcination treatment. Structural defects or contamination were negligible according to the DRX and FTIR analyzes. The H2 generation rates were 386 and 463 μmol h−1 g−1 using an ethanol-water scavenger suspension with the SrTiO3 and Ag/SrTiO3 oxides, respectively. In comparison with other works reported in the literature, the hydrothermal synthesis of SrTiO3 and the UV-pen lamp radiation used for the H2 production may open a new strategy for the sustainable synthesis of 3-dimensional photoactive nanomaterials. The functionalization of nanocubes with highly monodispersed silver or rhodium nanoparticles provided an additional increase in the hydrogen photoproduction rate. In this sense, the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) act as a sink for the photogenerated electrons through a Schottky barrier in the metal-perovskite contact region, boosting up the separation of the charge carriers. The identification of the surface species by XPS as well as the Rhodamine B photo-oxidation were performed to better understand the surface backward reaction in the photocatalytic production of hydrogen. The AgNPs worked as co-catalysts, preserving the stability of the most photoactive catalysts for 32 h.

Abstract

We analyzed the impact of chronic exposure to urban air pollution on the development of atherosclerosis. Hyperlipemic mice (LDLR(-/-)) were submitted to a high fat diet and air pollution for four months. We measured the susceptibility of LDL to oxidative modifications (TBARS), the presence of anti-oxLDL and an apoB-derived peptide (apoB-D) in blood and the degree of atherosclerosis in the aortic arch. Air pollution increased the susceptibility of LDL to oxidation as well as anti-oxLDL and anti-apo-B levels. These levels were even higher than in mice submitted to a high fat diet and non-polluted air. The lipid content of the atherosclerotic plaques in the aorta was increased in groups with a high cholesterol diet independently of the air quality. However, the thickness of the arterial wall was greater in mice fed a high lipid diet with polluted air. Thus, we conclude that urban air pollution exacerbates the susceptibility of LDL to oxidation, atherogenesis and vascular remodeling in hyperlipemic mice and that an immune response accompanies this process.

6. Specificity of T cells in human resistance to Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection.

Abstract

Secreted proteins are considered to have an important role in inducing resistance to Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. We analyzed the proliferation of PBMC from five healthy tuberculin-positive individuals, four tuberculosis patients, and six tuberculin-negative healthy controls to the whole bacilli, the 38- and 10-kDa-secreted antigens, and the 65- and 71-kDa hsp. Comparing the proliferative responses between the two mycobacterial-secreted proteins, we have found that both the 38- and the 10-kDa antigens were recognized by PBMC from healthy tuberculin-positive individuals. However, the magnitude of the proliferation caused by the 10-kDa antigen was significantly higher (P < 0.005) than that with the 38-kDa protein. It was a finding of importance that proliferation to the 10-kDa antigen was comparable to that elicited by the whole bacilli. Characterization of proliferative responses toward the 10-kDa antigen demonstrates that human cells process the 10-kDa antigen prior to its recognition by T cells, and that this process might be through lysosomal pathways. These data confirm the strong T cell response against the M. tuberculosis 10-kDa antigen and demonstrate, for the first time, characterization of cellular activation toward this antigen. The magnitude of the proliferative responses to the 65-kDa hsp in the healthy tuberculin-positive subjects compared with tuberculosis patients was not significantly different (P > 0.01). Finally, PBMC from the healthy tuberculin-positive individuals did not recognize the M. tuberculosis 71-kDa hsp. In summary, human resistant cells to tuberculosis respond to different classes of antigens, including constitutive cell wall proteins, secreted antigens, and hsp.
