1. Application of Real-Life On-Road Driving Data for Simulating the Electrification of Long-Haul Transport Trucks

Abstract

The worldwide commitment to the electrification of road transport will require a broad overhaul of equipment and infrastructure. Heavy-duty trucks account for over one-third of on-road energy use. Electrified roadways (e-Hwys) are an emerging technology where electric vehicles receive electricity while driving via dynamic wireless power transfer (DWPT), which is becoming highly efficient, and can bypass the battery to directly serve the motor. A modeling study was undertaken to compare long-haul trucks on e-Hwys with conventional battery technology requiring off-road recharging to assess the most favorable pathway to electrification. Detailed data taken from on-road driving trips from five diesel transport trucks were obtained for this study. This on-road data provided the simulations with both real-life duty cycles as well as performance targets for electric trucks, enabling an assessment and comparison of their performance on e-Hwys or with fast recharging. Battery-only trucks were found to have lifetimes down to 60% original battery capacity (60% SOH) of up to 9 years with 1600 kWh packs, and were similar to conventional diesel truck performance. On e-Hwys smaller pack sizes in the 500 to 900 kWh capacity range were sufficient for the driving duty, and showed lifetimes upwards of 20 years, comparing favorably to the battery calendar life limit of about 26 years. For a 535 kWh battery pack, an e-Hwy DWPT level of 250 kW was sufficient for a 36 tonne truck to complete all the daily driving as defined by the diesel reference trucks, and reach a battery pack end of life point of 60% SOH.

Abstract

The economics of long haul trucking on both continuous and intermittent Electric Highways were evaluated from a technical perspective as alternatives to using conventional megawatt chargers. The study revealed complex and sensitive interplay between the various technical factors related to the vehicle, its battery pack and the configuration and construction of the electrified highway. Key preliminary outcomes showed that a 250 kW highway power supply level allows a 36 tonne truck to drive continuously without requiring off-road recharging, and it can operate with a battery pack of about 50% of the size required for a truck only using megawatt charging. For now, while there is no overwhelming case in favour of any particular technology, the study serves to highlight the relevant factors impacting anticipated design criteria for the electrification of highways.

Abstract

In order to document the cytophysiology of glucagon release by A2 cells, isolated perfused rat pancreases were stimulated by arginine after exposure to colchicine, vincristine, cytochalasin B, cycloheximide and puromycin. Colchicine, 10−4 mol/l, enhanced the early phase of glucagon release after a short exposure time (35 min). This potentiation vanished with longer exposure (45 to 100 min) and was replaced by a reduction in glucagon release, affecting both phases of secretion, but more the second phase than the first. When exposure time was kept constant (45 min) and the concentration of colchicine varied, a similar potentiating effect was observed for colchicine 10−7 mol/l (first phase) and 10−6 mol/l (both phases); an inhibitory influence was apparent with higher concentrations (10−5 to 10−3 mol/l) affecting mainly the second phase of release. Similar results were obtained with vincristine, 10−5 mol/l (infused for 35 to 100 min) and vincristine 10−8 to 10−4 mol/l, after a constant 45 min exposure. These findings are compatible with a participation of microtubules in the dynamics of glucagon release: a reduction of both phases of secretion being caused by an extended disruption in the microtubular apparatus, whereas more limited disturbance of this system is associated with facilitated glucagon release. Cytochalasin B, 10 μg/ml, potentiated the A2 cell response to arginine and the basal glucagon release in the presence of glucose 4.4 mmol/l. Puromycin 100 μg/ml and cycloheximide 0.5 mg/ml reduced selectively the second phase of glucagon release; cycloheximide, 1 mg/ml, completely inhibited the basal release, and the early and late phases of the arginine-stimulated release. These results suggest that emiocytosis in A2 cells is very similar to that in B cells. The specificity of antitubulins and other agents as dissecting tools for the secretory process depends upon the experimental conditions.

Abstract

A DIPHASIC pattern has been recorded for insulin release after glucose stimulation in rat pancreas1 and in man2 and also after arginine stimulation in man3: this led to the concept of a two-compartmental storage system for insulin1. A diphasic pattern of secretion might be expected in some other endocrine cell types. To check this possibility for alpha-2 cells, perfused rat pancreas was submitted to both continuous infusion and pulses of a demonstrated glucagon stimulator, arginine4; glucagon responses were then measured.
