Abstract

In this paper the technological aspects of the FAZIA array will be explored. After a productive commissioning phase, FAZIA blocks started to measure and give very useful data to explore the physics of Fermi energy heavy-ion reactions. This was possible thanks to many technical measures and innovations developed in the commissioning phase and tuned during the first experimental campaigns. This paper gives a detailed description of the present status of the FAZIA setup from the electronic and mechanical point of view, trying also to trace a path for new improvements and refinements of the apparatus., 17 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

The goal of the FAZIA Collaboration is the design of a new-generation 4π detector array for heavy-ion collisions with radioactive beams. This article summarizes the main results of the R&D phase, devoted to the search for significant improvements of the techniques for charge and mass identification of reaction products. This was obtained by means of a systematic study of the basic detection module, consisting of two transmission-mounted silicon detectors followed by a CsI(Tl) scintillator. Significant improvements in ΔE-E and pulse-shape techniques were obtained by controlling the doping homogeneity and the cutting angles of silicon and by putting severe constraints on thickness uniformity. Purposely designed digital electronics contributed to identification quality. The issue of possible degradation related to radiation damage of silicon was also addressed. The experimental activity was accompanied by studies on the physics governing signal evolution in silicon. The good identification quality obtained with the prototypes during the R&D phase, allowed us to investigate also some aspects of isospin physics, namely isospin transport and odd-even staggering. Now, after the conclusion of the R&D period, the FAZIA Collaboration has entered the demonstrator phase, with the aim of verifying the applicability of the devised solutions for the realization of a larger-scale experimental set-up.

Abstract

In the last few years the FAZIA [1] collaboration has been investigating the properties of silicon detectors – in particular the crystal orientation and resistivity non-uniformity – in order to better pin down the detector characteristics that influence their performances for particle identification using Δ E − E and Pulse Shape Analysis (PSA) techniques. In this paper we present the first particle identification results obtained with detectors selected for good resistivity uniformity and using a “non-channeled” configuration. A new digital electronics was also designed for the R&D phase of FAZIA and was tested under beam for the first time. A quantitative procedure to measure the observed performances is applied in order to quantify the particle identification thresholds. Particle identification thresholds of ∼ 2.5 AMeV for Z ∼ 3 – 10 have been reached with the studied reaction.

Abstract

The measurement of gamma rays in the 0.3–30 MeV energy range with silicon detectors at room temperature via Compton scattering is being investigated for the next spatial gamma-ray observatory in the MeV band. In this contribution, we show that 60-keV gamma-ray detection with an energy resolution below 10 keV is possible using a 64×64 mm2, 1.5-mm thick, double-sided stripped silicon detector with a charge-sensitive preamplifier made of discrete commercial components. Our study of the noise including the bias circuit and the connection between the detector and the electronics allowed us to design a system able to sustain a leakage current of ∼50 nA/strip and a capacitance of ∼20 pF/strip. These results encourage us to investigate the use of integrated electronics in view of a satellite mission.

Abstract

Astronomy in the MeV gamma-ray band (0.1 - 100 MeV) holds a rich promise for elucidating many fundamental questions concerning the most violent cosmic phenomena. The next generation of gamma-ray space instrument could be a Compton and pair-creation telescope made of two main parts: a silicon tracker optimized for Compton scattering of cosmic gamma rays and a calorimeter that absorbs the scattered photons. We present here the first results of GAMCOTE, a GAMma-ray COmpton TElescope prototype which includes thick double sided silicon strip detectors coupled to a LaBr3:Ce crystal read by a 64 multi-anode photomultiplier tube.

Abstract

International audience; FAZIA is a multidetector specifically designed to optimize A and Z reaction product identification in heavy-ion collision experiments. This multidetector is modular and based on three-layer telescopes made of two silicon detectors followed by a thick (10 cm) CsI(Tl) scintillator read-out by a photodiode. Its electronics is fully digital. The goal to push at maximum identification capability while preserving excellent energy resolution, can be achieved by using pulse-shape analysis techniques and by making an intensive use of high-speed flash ADCs. This paper presents the front-end part of the electronics.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper, a front-end electronics based on an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) is presented for the future imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs). To achieve this purpose, a 16-channel ASIC chip, PARISROC 2 (Photomultiplier ARray Integrated in SiGe ReadOut Chip) is used in the analog signal processing and digitization. The digitized results are sent to the server by a user-defined User Datagram Protocol/Internet Protocol (UDP/IP) hardcore engine through Ethernet that is managed by a FPGA. A prototype electronics fulfilling the requirements of the Wide Field of View Cherenkov Telescope Array (WFCTA) of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) project has been designed, fabricated and tested to prove the concept of the design. A detailed description of the development with the results of the test measurements are presented. By using a new input structure and a new configuration of the ASIC, the dynamic range of the circuit is extended. A highly precise-time calibrating algorithm is also proposed, verified and optimized for the mass production. The test results suggest that the proposed electronics design fulfills the general specification of the future IACTs.

Abstract

International audience; This paper presents the test results of the second prototype of SAMPA, the ASIC designed for the upgrade of read-out front end electronics of the ALICE Time Projection Chamber (TPC) and Muon Chamber (MCH). SAMPA is made in a 130 nm CMOS technology with 1.25 V nominal voltage supply and provides 32 channels, with selectable input polarity, and three possible combinations of shaping time and sensitivity. Each channel consists of a Charge Sensitive Amplifier, a semi-Gaussian shaper and a 10-bit ADC, a Digital Signal Processor provides digital filtering and compression capability. In the second prototype run both full chip and single test blocks were fabricated, allowing block characterization and full system behaviour studies. Experimental results are here presented showing agreement with requirements for both the blocks and the full chip.

Abstract

A new segmented silicon-array called MUSETT has been built for the study of heavy elements using the Recoil-Decay-Tagging technique. MUSETT is located at the focal plane of the VAMOS spectrometer at GANIL and is used in conjunction with a γ-ray array at the target position. This paper describes the device, which consists of four 10×10 cm 2 Si detectors and its associated front-end electronics based on highly integrated ASICs electronics. The triggerless readout electronics, the data acquisition and the analysis tools developed for its characterization are presented. This device was commissioned at GANIL with the EXOGAM γ-ray spectrometer using the fusion–evaporation reaction 197 Au( 22 Ne,5 n ) 214 Ac. Additionally, the performance of the VAMOS Wien filter used during the in-beam commissioning is also reported.

Abstract

A complete electronics system has been developed, from the preamplifiers up to the readout and control interface, for the cathode strip chambers of the BBS spectrometer. The system is based on application specific D-size VXI modules. The size of electronics has been reduced by the use of small surface mounted daughter boards. A flat topped-pulse is produced with a new time-variant filter. In all modules, the 16-bit ADCs and FIFO memory are followed by a digital signal processor, which performs data filtering and cathode induced charge interpolation. Good analog noise performance is obtained in a multi-processor environment.

Abstract

International audience; PARISROC (Photomultiplier ARray Integrated in SiGe ReadOut Chip) is a complete readout chip in AustriaMicroSystems (AMS) SiGe 0.35 μm technology designed to read array of 16 Photomultipliers (PMTs). The ASIC is realized in the context of the PMm2 (square meter PhotoMultiplier) project that has proposed a new system of "smart photo-detectors" composed by sensor and read-out electronics dedicated to next generation neutrino experiments. The future water Cherenkov detectors will take place in megaton size water tanks then with a large surface of photo-detection. We propose to segment the large surface in arrays with a single front-end electronics and only the useful data send in surface to be stocked and analyzed. This paper describes the second version of the ASIC and illustrates the chip principle of operation and the main characteristics thank to a series of measurements. It is a 16-channel ASIC with channels that work independently, in triggerless mode and all managed by a common digital part. Then main innovation is that all the channels are handled independently by the digital part so that only channels that have triggered are digitized. Then the data are transferred to the internal memory and sent out in a data driven way. The ASIC allows charge and time measurement. We measured a charge measurement range starting from 160 fC (1 photoelectron-p.e., at PMT gain of 106) to 100 pC (around 600 p.e.) at 1% of linearity; time tagging at 1 ns thanks to a 24-bit counter at 10 MHz and a Time to Digital Converter (TDC) on a 100 ns ramp.

Abstract

International audience; PARISROC is a complete read out chip, in a BiCMOS SiGe 0.35μm technology from AustriaMicroSystems, for photomultipliers array. It allows triggerless acquisition for next generation neutrino experiments and is part of a R&D program called PMm2. The ASIC integrates 16 independent and auto triggered channels with variable gain and provides charge and time measurement by a 10-bit Wilkinson ADC and a 24-bit counter. The time measurement is made of 2 complementary systems: a 24-bit gray counter (coarse time) with a step of 100 ns, and a double ramp TDC (fine time) with a 10-bit resolution and a measured precision of 425 ps RMS. Only the analog TDC will be explained in this paper by detailing the double ramp TDC architecture, the special cares and the first fine time measurements. One of the fine time TDC characteristics is the fact that the double ramp generator is common to all channels.

Abstract

NESTER SEP ACC; We have developed a new telescope array, dedicated to the study of direct reactions of exotic nuclei on light targets in inverse kinematics. This device, called MUST2, is briefly described, and the results of the first tests performed with an alpha source and Ni beams at 10 and 75 MeV/u on a CDH target are presented.

Abstract

MATE (Must ASIC for Time and Energy) will process signals delivered from the hodoscope MUST2. The hodoscope consists of six large area telescopes (100 cm/sup 2/), each made up of a double sided Si strip detector followed by a Si(Li) and CsI crystal. MATE has sixteen channels and can deliver three types of analogue information per channel; time of flight and energy loss of the detected particle, value of leakage DC current per channel. MATE also gives a trigger logical signal corresponding to the cross over of an adjustable threshold value. The analogue information is transmitted as differential current through twisted pair to the acquisition system based on VXI-C. The slow control is assured via the I2C industrial protocol. The first version of MATE for Si(strip) is available. An update of MATE will allow it to be used for the Si(Li) and CsI detectors. MATE is a novel R&D project for nuclear physics which includes both energy and time measurements with good resolution and high energy dynamic range.

Abstract

ACC SEP NESTER; Over the past four years we have studied (p,p$^'$), (d,p) ,(d,$^3$He) and other reactions using radioactive beams in inverse kinematics to obtain spectroscopic information for nuclei away from the valley of stability After a general overview of the experimental method we will describe our ongoing MUST II development. This is to build a very compact (1000cm$^3$) three stage telescope with an active area of 100cm$^2$ with position resolution of 0.7×0.7 mm$^2$ and time of flight measurement. The mass identification and energy dynamic range is of 0.4 to 80 MeV.A up to alpha particles. The compactness of the array is assured through the use of an ASIC development to measure the time of flight and energy. The large solid angle coverage of 2.6sr and compactness of this array will allow it to be used in particle-gamma coincidence experiments

Abstract

International audience; The next generation of proton decay and neutrino experiments, the post-SuperKamiokande detectors, such as those that will take place in megaton size water tanks, will require very large surfaces of photo-detection and will produce a large volume of data. Even with large hemispherical photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), the expected number of channels should reach hundreds of thousands. An ANR funded R&D program to implement a solution is presented here. The very large surface of photo-detection is segmented in macro pixels consisting of an array (2 × 2 m2) of 16 hemispherical 12-inch PMTs connected to autonomous underwater front-end electronics working in a triggerless data acquisition mode. The array is powered by a common high voltage and only one data cable allows the connection by network to the surface controller. This architecture allows a considerable reduction of the cost and facilitates the industrialization. This paper presents the complete architecture of the prototype system and tests results with 16 8-inch PMTs, validating the whole electronics, the built-in gain adjustment and the calibration principle.
