Polyurethanes have been extensively studied for their strong electromechanical response. Previous studies have mainly investigated the impact of electrical charges on these polymers' DC conductivity, which was measured on the order of 10−10 S/m. The movement of electric charges is responsible for the macroscopic deformation of polymer films under an electric field. However, this study focused primarily on electric fields below 107 V/m, where the electric current complies with Ohm's law. In this paper, we examine the electric current above this field value and observe a deviation in the current from linearity with the applied field, especially for a high electric field of 106–107 V/m. This change is known in polymers under high electric fields but has never been observed in polyurethane. This suggests the injection of electrode charges into the polymer material. This article provides the threshold at which the transition occurs from linear (Ohm's law) to nonlinear conduction as a result of injected electric charges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A series of (Gd, Y, Yb, Tb, Ce)3Al2Ga3O12 compositionally disordered compounds with a garnet structure were prepared in the form of ceramics by sintering in oxygen at 1650 °C for 2 h and studied for the luminescent properties and interaction of ions entering the matrix host. The luminescence features of Ce3+ ions were found to be strongly dependent on the Yb concentration. Photoluminescence and scintillation kinetics are characterized by subnanosecond kinetics when the Yb index in the compound exceeds X = 0.3. It opens an opportunity to create an extremely fast and dense scintillation material emitting in a visible range. A further decrease in the Yb index in the compound leads to an increase in the intensity of Yb3+ infrared (IR) emission, whereas Ce3+ and Tb3+ ions contribute to the luminosity of the material by overlapping intra- and intereconfiguration luminescence bands in the spectral range of 300–700 nm. This finding opens an opportunity to create converter materials tolerant to the corpuscular radiation of isotope sources, providing a high efficiency of electric current production when coupled with a silicon photovoltaic element. A non-destructive method for detecting sub-micrometer-sized micropipes on an entire wafer surface is investigated. Since it is difficult to detect sub-micrometer-sized micropipes due to their small core size, a non-destructively and accurately detecting method is required. To solve the issue, we focus on a characteristic depression generated around micropipes, namely, line-shaped depressions. In this paper, the location of line-shaped depressions is identified by using optical inspection, and the line-shaped depressions are distinguished whether micropipes exhibit line-shaped depression or not by using mirror electron microscope observation as high-resolution inspection. The accuracy of the distinction results is confirmed by scanning electron microscope observation, and electrical characteristics of the P–N diode are fabricated using the inspected wafer. Furthermore, the sub-micrometer-sized micropipes are observed at the sites of leakage current identified by emission microscopy. Additionally, device simulation of the blocking-voltage characteristics of P–N diodes suggests that the increase in leakage current depends on the electric field at the sub-micrometer-sized micropipes, regardless of their core size. Unlike popular multiband antenna array radiation based on either electric or magnetic surface currents, the use of mutually interleaved and tightly coupled electric and magnetic currents results in an aperture-reuse space-efficient multiband radiating surface for highly integrated antenna-frontend architecture and spatial power combining design scenarios. In this work, slot and dipole modes corresponding to magnetic and electric currents are effectively interleaved and excited in a surface to develop a space-efficient dual-wideband aperture-shared radiating surface. In this case, due to an effective reuse of the antenna aperture over both frequency bands, a high aperture-reuse efficiency is achieved. First, we devise a planar magneto-electric (ME)-dipole-alike antenna and analyze it in both the frequency and time domain. The antenna is then studied by the characteristic mode theory and the findings are validated using full-wave simulations. The developed planar ME-dipole-alike antenna is used to realize a dual-wideband radiating surface in which electric and magnetic currents are mutually coupled and interlaced, which is excited by properly oriented and distributed sources on the antenna's surface. Eventually, a highly isolated dual-wideband prototype was developed and fabricated using a cost-effective multi-layer Printed Circuit Board (PCB) process that operates in the Ku-band with both impedance and gain bandwidth of approximately 42% and in the Ka-band with respective impedance and gain bandwidth of 29% and 16.32%. Magnetic skyrmions are particle-like topological protected spin structures that can be driven by electric current. We demonstrate a single skyrmion-based multilevel data storage device that could also work as the potential artificial synapse for neuromorphic computing. Four pinning sites are designed to situate the skyrmion in selective regions, whose resistances rise owing to the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) induced by the skyrmion. Skyrmion's position could denote the data levels when the device works as a multilevel data storage device. Pinning sites' positions represent the synaptic weights when it functions as the artificial synapse. Multilevel data storage device's data level change or the synapse's potentiation and depression is realized by the electric current applied parallel to the track. Our work shows that the AMR could help to detect a single skyrmion without the magnetic tunnel junction. Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) has been shown to be beneficial in various medical fields such as wound healing, oncology or dentistry. A prominent effect induced by CAP is the boost of microcirculation in human skin tissue. Being a complex cocktail of physical and chemically reactive components, the mechanisms by which CAP enhances microcirculation still remain unclear. Thus, this study aims to identify relevant CAP components involved in stimulation of dermal microcirculation. In a comparative approach, the application of the same CAP source was modified in such a way that three different treatment modalities could be realized, each with a characteristic composition of electrical current flow and concentration of reactive species. Microcirculation parameters oxygen saturation (StO2), tissue hemoglobin index, near-infrared perfusion index and tissue water index were recorded before and after each treatment on the lateral proximal left arm of 10 healthy volunteers by means of hyperspectral imaging. The maximum microcirculatory response to CAP was observed when all components were allowed to interact with skin tissue (standard treatment). In contrast, no upregulation was found as soon as electric currents and fields had been removed from the effective component spectrum. Application of the CAP source at reduced concentrations of reactive species compared to standard treatment led to significant but less pronounced enhancement of dermal microcirculation. The findings of this study indicate that a synergistic interplay of all CAP components promotes microcirculation in dermal tissue most effectively. Moreover, the findings support the hypothesis that electric currents and fields play a key role in enabling microcirculation boost whereas availability of reactive species in the gas phase is associated with the intensity of the tissue response to CAP treatment. In this work, fully densified Ni–SiC reinforced Ti6Al4V matrix composites were consolidated by pulsed electric current sintering (PECS) technique. The microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of the developed composites with varying SiC contents were investigated. The microstructural study revealed in-situ precipitation of TiC, Ti 5 Si 3 and Ti 3 SiC 2 strengthening phases within the composites. The α colony size in the composites was notably reduced compared to the fabricated SiC-deficient samples due to the addition of SiC additive into the Ti6Al4V alloy matrix. The in-situ precipitated phases enhanced the mechanical properties of the composites. Composite reinforced with 10 wt% SiC (TNi10SiC) displayed the highest hardness value of 609.8 ± 50.9 HV 0.5 among the sintered samples, translating to an increment of about 88 % compared to the unreinforced sample T. Among the sintered samples, the highest flexural strength of 2094.32 ± 97.67 MPa was obtained for the TNi5SiC composite, after which the flexural strength deteriorates with increasing SiC content as witnessed in TNi10SiC composite with the least flexural strength of 863.67 ± 71.57 MPa due to agglomeration of the reinforcement phases within the composite. Samples reinforced with 0 wt% SiC experienced a ductile fracture, and the composites containing 2.5 wt% - 5 wt% SiC content witnessed intergranular and interlamellar fractures. However, at higher SiC content, reinforcement pull-out and debonding of the agglomerated reinforcement phases predominates, and composites fail by brittle fracture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Heaterless hollow cathodes are a promising solution for reaching a good cathodic contact in electrodynamic tether systems. However, these cathodes cannot keep the plasma discharge if the electric current I C is below a threshold I m i n. If the tether is short, and to save power and expellant, an appropriate command strategy is needed to ensure that the cathode is triggered in conditions satisfying I C > I m i n . This study investigates four command strategies, including two fully autonomous approaches (one based on satellite position and the other on local plasma density) and two strategies involving ground segment access, differing in command generation location (ground segment and on-board computer). The success rates of the four strategies were studied though numerical simulation and for the specific scenario of the E.T.PACK demonstration mission. The results demonstrate that, as compared to continuous operation of the hollow cathode, the proposed strategies reduce propellant wastage by a factor between 5 and 10. The strategy requiring ground segment access and with the onboard computer making the command decision has the highest success rate (94%). Among the autonomous configurations, the strategy based solely on local plasma density achieves the highest success rate (69%). Additionally, the impact of sensor accuracy on success rates was assessed via Monte Carlo analysis. The command strategy relying on plasma density measurement is the most sensitivity strategy, with a 10% decrease in success rate due to sensor uncertainty. • Four strategies for commanding the hollow cathode of short electrodynamic tethers are proposed. • Duty cycle and rate of success are used to assess the performance of the strategies. • The two strategies involving contact with the ground segment have the best performance. • The two autonomous strategies only involve one onboard sensor and provide acceptable performance. Introduction Case presentation Discussion Modern cardiovascular implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) have mechanisms that prevent damage from external electric shocks, and malfunction following accidental electrocution is rare. However, the effects of lightning injuries in patients with CIEDs are uncertain.A 74‐year‐old man with a dual‐chamber pacemaker due to complete heart block was struck by a lightning while farming. He had no serious injury at the time and sought medical evaluation 1 month later, when he presented with asymptomatic bradycardia. Device interrogation suggested major battery and lead damage, requiring extraction and subsequent placement of a new pacing system.While a previous report depicted pacing threshold elevation without extensive device impairment, our patient presented with major damage to the whole pacing system. The factors contributing to these divergent outcomes are unclear. Juno conducted two close Io flybys on 30 December 2023 and 03 February 2024, both at a minimum altitude of 1,500 km. Filamentary structures in the electric and magnetic field spectra indicate Juno crossed the Alfvén wing, the magnetic structure connecting Io to Jupiter's polar ionosphere. We show that the first pass took Juno diametrically through the northern Alfvén wing, while the second pass had Juno graze the southern Alfvén wing boundary, enabling extended measurements of the transition region between Io's vicinity and the Jovian magnetosphere. Of note, evidence of local electron beams is inferred from whistler‐mode emissions. We demonstrate that their energies are sub‐keV, are sourced from Io's ionosphere or local torus, and are part of a distributed current system connecting Io to Jupiter. Finally, upper hybrid resonances indicate electron densities are significantly elevated in Io's polar region (∼28,000 cm−3) compared to the local Io torus (∼2,000 cm−3). Signatures in the electromagnetic field indicate that Juno sampled the region dominated by the electrodynamic interaction between Io and Jupiter. Powerful electric currents flow within this region that deliver energetic electrons into Jupiter's polar atmosphere, resulting in the Io auroral footprint. Low-consumption ceramics processing routes are expected to replace conventional ones due to environmental concerns. In this context, flash sintering is garnering interest because it allows dense ceramics to be obtained in just a few minutes and at relatively low temperatures. This is particularly interesting for sintering alkaline-based compounds due to the easy volatilization of these elements. In this work, current-controlled flash sintering is used to obtain potassium-sodium niobate (KNN)-based piezoceramics with refined microstructure and suitable stoichiometry, leading to improved functional properties. KNN-based materials are currently outstanding lead-free piezoceramics, with their properties highly sensitive to the proper construction of the polymorphic phase boundary, as in the case of the first promising composition (K 0.44 Na 0.52 Li 0.04)(Nb 0.86 Ta 0.10 Sb 0.04)O 3. Results of this work show that sintering parameters may determine the polymorphic behavior of this system, thereby evincing flash sintering allows polymorphic phase boundary to be fine-tuned. It is demonstrated that the convergence of microstructure refinement and compositional control holds the potential for enhancing properties through a proper electric current control during flash sintering. To repair and extend the service life of mobile-contact parts, laser cladding technology was applied to prepare CrB2/Cu coating on Cu–Cr alloy substrate, which was simulated as actual servicing parts, and the current-carrying friction property, including that friction coefficient, wear rate as well as current-carrying efficiency were studied. Results show that most of the CrB2 particles retain while some decompose into CrBx phases during the laser cladding process. With the increase of electric current, the average friction coefficient of CrB2/Cu coating grows first followed by going down. In comparison to the CrB2/Cu coating, the wear rate and average friction coefficient of QCr0.5 substrate always grow with increasing electric current values. When the current is 20A, the COF and wear rate of composite coating are about 0.737 and 1.37 × 10–4 mm3/N•m, which are about 21% and 79% of that of QCr0.5 alloy, respectively, and the major wear mechanism of CrB2/Cu coating is the adhesive wear. Moreover, the CrB2/Cu composite coating has low friction coefficient, low wear rate and high current-carrying efficiency under high electric currents, as a consequence, the CrB2/Cu coating has better current-carrying friction and wear performance under high current conditions. AbstractMercury (Hg) pollution in Ghana through mining has become a serious environmental challenge. This study investigates the potential of Cirsium arvense to photostabilize Hg using electrokinetic current with or without an iodide solution in gold mine tailings heavily contaminated through mining activities in southern Ghana. An initial Hg concentration of 9.60 mg/kg using cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry (CVAAS) was determined. The biological absorption coefficient, bioconcentration factor, and translocation factor of Hg have been presented. Cirsium arvense therefore had a higher bioconcentration factor (BCF) of 2.6–5.15 mg/kg, and a transfer factor (TF) of 0.24–0.36 indicating a higher efficiency for phytostabilization. Both the rate and time of extractions of Hg from the tailings by Cirsium arvense are efficiently improved in the combined electric current and iodide treatment. Plant and electric current combined treatment and plant and iodide combined treatment had only 60 and 50% phytostabilization rates, respectively. The combined plant, iodide, and electric current treatment has proven to be superior with about >90% Hg removal rate. Therefore, the combined plant, iodide, and electric current treatment resulted in a higher Hg removal efficiency by Cirsium arvense in a shorter period due to higher solubilization rate and electromigration effects on Hg species. Spin‐transfer torque (STT) and spin‐orbit torque (SOT) form the core of spintronics, allowing for the control of magnetization through electric currents. While the sign of SOT can be manipulated through material and structural engineering, it is conventionally understood that STT lacks a degree of freedom in its sign. However, this study presents the first demonstration of manipulating the STT sign by engineering heavy metals adjacent to magnetic materials in magnetic heterostructures. Spin torques are quantified through magnetic domain‐wall speed measurements, and subsequently, both STT and SOT are systematically extracted from these measurements. The results unequivocally show that the sign of STT can be either positive or negative, depending on the materials adjacent to the magnetic layers. Specifically, Pd/Co/Pd films exhibit positive STT, while Pt/Co/Pt films manifest negative STT. In this study, the response of soft clay was assessed during electrokinetic consolidation. The laboratory-based experimental study was conducted in a custom-designed test set-up focusing on soft clay's engineering and physicochemical response during and at the end of the electrokinetic consolidation. Six electrokinetic consolidation tests were performed under self-weight for 24 h with different voltage gradients. The operational response was investigated by monitoring the electric current and the power consumed during the test. Further, the variation of ohmic heating, volumetric water content, and water potential was continuously measured. The efficacy in enhancing the engineering response is analysed by investigating cumulative discharge, surface settlement, water content, and undrained shear strength of the soft soil. At the end of the test, the effect of electrochemical reactions in altering the soft clay's pH, microfabric, and mineral phases was investigated. Finally, the quantification of the surface crack was investigated, and their dependence on the applied voltage gradient was established. The study results show substantial enhancement in the engineering characteristics of soft clay. It significantly accelerates the dewatering efficacy, increases the undrained shear strength and surface settlement, and reduces the water content of the soft clay irrespective of the applied voltage gradient. The electrokinetic consolidation increases the temperature of the soft clay. The measured surface cracks give the crack intensity factor of 1.95, 2.10, and 2.15% for the applied voltage gradient of 0.05, 0.10, and 0.15 V/mm, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soft electromagnetic artificial muscles (SEAMs) that use electric currents are reported as their power sources. The proposed actuator consists of fully soft components: microfluidic coils, stretchable magnets, ferromagnetic silicone, and stretchable housings. The soft coils are fabricated by directly printing room‐temperature liquid metal on a stretchable substrate, enabling the generation of high‐density electromagnetic fields. Based on design optimization through modeling and simulation, the proposed actuators have a characteristic of bistability following the relationships of the forces acting on the components. Depending on the design configurations, the proposed actuators generate contraction and expansion motions as well as vibrations in a bidirectional manner, enabled by electromagnetic actuation. The main advantages of the proposed actuators are fully compliant structures, compact form factors, and short response times, which have not been observed in existing polymer‐based artificial muscles. Another advantage is the self‐detection of the actuation states by measuring the inductance change in the coils. Last, the modular design fully packaged with a coil and magnets in a soft housing makes it possible to easily resize and reconfigure the robotic systems with multiple actuator modules for different applications. Examples of applications demonstrated are a modular crawling robot, energy‐efficient grippers, a multi‐degrees of freedom (DOF) soft manipulator, and a high‐frequency swimming robot. Room‐temperature liquid metal droplets (LMDs) are a promising material for various applications in soft robotics, active droplets, and biomedical devices. However, controllable and high‐throughput production of LMDs remains challenging due to their high surface tension and density. Here, a novel strategy is presented to produce LMDs by combining electric field‐induced electrocapillary flow with an external flow field. The basic mechanism is that the electrocapillary flow induced at the LMD/electrolyte interface forms a vortex ring in the electrolyte, creating a hurricane‐like effect in the tube, which in turn causes the liquid metal to deform and eventually pinch off into small droplets. It is demonstrated that droplet size and generation frequency can be controlled precisely by adjusting the applied electric current, flow rate, and surfactant concentration, establishing a relationship between radius and experimental parameters through dimensionless analysis. More importantly, this strategy can handle pendant droplets and facilitate programmable droplet patterning. Leveraging established relationships, flexible control over droplet size and spacing during patterning is attained. Furthermore, an iontronic pressure‐sensitive device based on LMDs and hydrogel is developed to showcase the versatility of the approach. Harmonic state estimation (HSE) is an useful technique for determining harmonic voltages and currents in electric power systems based on synchronized measurements and network impedances parameters. However, measurements and parameters data can be corrupted by gross errors yielding unsatisfactory estimation results. Despite recent methods have been proposed for HSE in power systems, there are few works considering both harmonic state variables and parameters estimation. In order to solve this problem, this paper presents a generalized harmonic state estimation considering uncertain network parameters and synchronized measurements. In the proposed approach, harmonic voltage and current phasors are obtained by measurement units allocated along the system. Network parameters, such as line and load impedances, are treated as inequality constraints in an optimization problem formulation considering both system state variables and parameters to be determined by the proposed HSE. The main contribution of this research paper is the use of a deterministic approach for estimating both harmonic state variables and parameters with reduced estimation errors when compared with the traditional weighted least squares (WLS) technique. Batteries are a fundamental storage component due to its various applications in mobility, renewable energies and consumer electronics among others. Regardless of the battery typology, one key variable from a user's perspective is the remaining energy in the battery. It is usually presented as the percentage of remaining energy compared to the total energy that can be stored and is labeled State Of Charge (SOC). This work addresses the development of a hybrid model based on a Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) power cell, due to its broad implementation. The proposed model calculates the SOC, by means of voltage and electric current as inputs and the latter as the output. As an important refractory material in the continuous casting process, the clogging of submerged entry nozzle (SEN) can negatively affect the quality of the slab. In this paper, the effect of electric current pulse (ECP) on the interfacial reaction between molten steel and SEN during continuous casting of ultra-low carbon steel was studied. The results show that the application of ECP can effectively inhibit the adhesion and growth of clogging. After employing ECP, the structure of clogging at the interface changes and its density increases. The newly formed clogging is more stable and can effectively resist the impact of high-speed molten steel. In particular, applying ECP improves the qualification rate of liquid level fluctuation on the mold. The number of large-size inclusions and defects in the slab are significantly reduced, which has a positive effect on improving the quality of the slab and prolonging the service life of the SEN. The impact of interplanetary (IP) shocks on the Earth's magnetosphere can greatly disturb the geomagnetic field and electric currents in the magnetosphere-ionosphere system. At high latitudes, the current systems most affected by the shocks are the auroral electrojet currents. These currents then generate ground geomagnetically induced currents that couple with and are highly detrimental to ground artificial conductors including power transmission lines, oil/gas pipelines, railways, and submarine cables. Recent research has shown that the shock impact angle, the angle the shock normal vector performs with the Sun-Earth line, plays a major role in controlling the subsequent geomagnetic activity. More specifically, due to more symmetric magnetospheric compressions, nearly frontal shocks are usually more geoeffective than highly inclined shocks. In this study, we utilize a subset (332 events) of a shock list with more than 600 events to investigate, for the first time, shock impact angle effects on the subsequent GICs right after shock impact (compression effects) and several minutes after shock impact (substorm-like effects). We use GIC recordings from the Finnish natural gas pipeline performed near the Mäntsälä compression station in southern Finland. We find that GIC peaks ( > 5 A) occurring after shock impacts are mostly caused by nearly frontal shocks and occur in the post-noon/dusk magnetic local time sector. These GIC peaks are presumably triggered by partial ring current intensifications in the dusk sector. On the other hand, more intense GIC peaks ( > 20 A) generally occur several minutes after shock impacts and are located around the magnetic midnight terminator. These GIC peaks are most likely caused by intense energetic particle injections from the magnetotail which frequently occur during substorms. Transition‐metal carbides with metallic properties have been extensively used as electrocatalysts due to their excellent conductivity and unique electronic structures. Herein, NbC nanoparticles decorated carbon nanofibers (NbC@CNFs) are proposed as an efficient and robust catalyst for electrochemical synthesis of ammonia from nitrate/nitrite reduction, which achieves a high Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 94.4 % and a large ammonia yield of 30.9 mg h−1 mg−1cat.. In situ electrochemical tests reveal the nitrite reduction at the catalyst surface follows the *NO pathway and theoretical calculations reveal the formation of NbC@CNFs heterostructure significantly broadens density of states nearby the Fermi energy. Finite element simulations unveil that the current and electric field converge on the NbC nanoparticles along the fiber, suggesting the dispersed carbides are highly active for nitrite reduction. The full potential of blue energy as a sustainable technology for high‐performance energy generation remains elusive. Nanoporous anodic alumina (NAA) is extensively used as a passive structural support to develop a broad variety of ion exchange membranes based on other materials for osmosis‐driven energy generation. However, the intrinsic ionic current rectification (ICR) properties of the inherited hemispherical barrier oxide layer (BOL) closing the bottom tips of NAA's nanopores are overlooked. As‐produced NAA provides new avenues to control ionic transport through its BOL, acting as an ICR model system to study electric current associated with the selective flow of ions across anodic oxides. This study explores the intrinsic capability of NAA membranes for osmotic energy generation. NAA membranes with a working area of 13.4 mm2 can generate a power density yield of ≈2.8×10−4 W m−2 when subjected to a 105‐fold salinity ratio at a pH 3 in CaCl2 electrolyte, achieving a high efficiency of 7%. With better understanding of the mechanism of ion transport on osmotic generation, the intrinsic properties of NAA membranes can be tailor‐engineered to maximize blue energy yield, paving the way for future developments in a scalable technology suited for real‐life applications. Microstructural changes in conductive materials induced by electric current treatments, such as electromigration and electroplasticity, are critical in semiconductor and metal processing. However, owing to the inevitable thermal effect (Joule heating), the athermal effect on microstructural modifications remains obscure. This paper presents an approach of utilizing pre-micromachined structures, which obstruct current flow but maintain a thermal history similar to that of the matrix, effectively disentangling the thermal and athermal effects. A duplex stainless-steel material is selected to validate the feasibility of this method. Microstructural characterizations show that the athermal effect, especially the electron wind force (EWF), primarily governs the element diffusion and phase transformation in this study. Moreover, many σ phases (Cr-enriched) are precipitated in the micromachined structures, whereas no precipitation occurred in the matrix, suggesting that the directional EWF disrupts the Cr aggregation caused by Joule heating. Furthermore, we present a critical formula for determining the dimensions of micromachined structures of commonly used metallic materials. The proposed method may serve as an effective and powerful tool for unveiling the athermal effect on microstructural alterations. Understanding the impact of the athermal effect on microstructures is crucial for designing and manufacturing semiconductor and metal materials. Current treatments of cardiac arrhythmias like ventricular fibrillation involve the application of a high-energy electric shock, that induces significant electrical currents in the myocardium and therefore involves severe side effects like possible tissue damage and post-traumatic stress. Using numerical simulations on four different models of 2D excitable media, this study demonstrates that low energy pulses applied shortly after local minima in the mean value of the transmembrane potential provide high success rates. We evaluate the performance of this approach for ten initial conditions of each model, ten spatially different stimuli, and different shock amplitudes. The investigated models of 2D excitable media cover a broad range of dominant frequencies and number of phase singularities, which demonstrates, that our findings are not limited to a specific kind of model or parameterization of it. Thus, we propose a method that incorporates the dynamics of the underlying system, even during pacing, and solely relies on a scalar observable, which is easily measurable in numerical simulations. Androgenic alopecia (AGA) is the most common type of alopecia and its treatments involve drugs that have various adverse effects and are not completely effective. Radiofrequency-based therapies (RF) are an alternative for AGA treatment. Although there is increasing clinical evidence of the effectiveness of RF for alopecia, its effects at the tissue and cellular level have not been studied in detail. The objective of this study was to analyze ex vivo the potential effect of RF currents used in capacitive resistive electrical transfer (CRET) therapy on AGA. Hair follicles (HFs) were donated by patients with AGA and treated with CRET. AGA-HFs were exposed in vitro to intermittent 448 kHz electric current in subthermal conditions. Cell proliferation (Ki67), apoptosis (TUNEL assay), differentiation (β-catenin), integrity (collagen and MMP9), thickness of the epidermis surrounding HF, proportion of bulge cells and melanoblasts in AGA-HF were analyzed by immunohistochemistry. CRET increased proliferation and decreased death of different populations of AGA-HF cells. In addition, the melanoblasts increased in bulge and the epidermis surrounding the hair follicle thickened. These results support the effectiveness of RF-based therapies for the treatment of alopecia. However, clinical trials are necessary to know the true effectiveness of CRET therapy and other RF therapies for AGA treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Inferences of the magnetic field in the solar atmosphere by means of spectropolarimetric inversions (i.e., Stokes inversion codes) yield magnetic fields that are non-solenoidal (∇ ⋅ B ≠ 0). Because of this, results obtained by such methods are sometimes put into question. Aims. We aim to develop and implement a new technique that, in conjunction with Stokes inversion codes, can retrieve magnetic fields that are simultaneously consistent with observed polarization signals and with the null divergence condition. Methods. The method used in this work strictly imposes ∇ ⋅ B = 0 by determining the vertical component of the magnetic field (Bz) from the horizontal ones (Bx, By). We implement this technique, which we refer to as solenoidal inversion, into the FIRTEZ Stokes inversion code and apply it to spectropolarimetric observations of a sunspot observed with the Hinode/SP instrument. Results. We show that the solenoidal inversion retrieves a vertical component of the magnetic field that is consistent in 80% of the analyzed three-dimensional (x, y, z) domain, with the vertical component of the magnetic field inferred from the non-solenoidal inversion. We demonstrate that the solenoidal inversion is capable of a better overall fitting to the observed Stokes vector than the non-solenoidal inversion. In fact, the solenoidal magnetic field fits Stokes V worse, but this is compensated by a better fit to Stokes I. We find a direct correlation between the worsening in the fit to the circular polarization profiles by the solenoidal inversion and the deviations in the inferred Bz with respect to the non-solenoidal inversion. Finally, we also show that the spatial distribution of the electric currents given by ∇ × B does not change significantly after imposing the null divergence condition. Conclusions. In spite of being physically preferable, solenoidal magnetic fields are topologically very similar in 80% of the analyzed three-dimensional domain to the non-solenoidal fields obtained from spectropolarimetric inversions. These results support the idea that common Stokes inversion techniques fail to reproduce ∇ ⋅ B = 0 mainly as a consequence of the uncertainties in the determination of the individual components of the magnetic field. In the remaining 20% of the analyzed domain, where the Bz inferred by the solenoidal and non-solenoidal inversions disagree, it remains to be proven that the solenoidal inversion is to be preferred because even though the overall fit to the Stokes parameters improves, the fit to Stokes V worsens. It is in these regions where the application of the Stokes inversion constrained by the null divergence condition can yield new insights about the topology of the magnetic field in the solar photosphere. The aim of this study was to develop a sustainable electromagnetic prototype to detect the interior deterioration of walls in buildings in order to mitigate uncertainty as it is a challenge to observe the interior state of walls without utilising destructive procedures. The method used was experimental, developmental and quantitative in its approach. The inductance, electric current, modulated frequency and power of the electromagnetic field were used to penetrate the constructed specimens, which were built of materials such as concrete, brick, adobe, plaster and fine sand and had walls with a thickness of less than 300 millimetres. The results show that the optimum value of the magnetic field was 0.18 µT, which was sufficient to penetrate 150 mm with densities between 1.0 and 2.4 g/cm3 and porosities between 11 and 60%. The current and wave each had a coefficient of determination R2 = 0.8914, and the average inductance value was 184 µH, which was established with an air core of radius 9.75 cm and with 19 turns with AWG-25 wire. The frequency-modulated signal ranged in the audible zone between 10 and 22 kHz. The presented prototype detects the interior deterioration of the walls of the building, and the signal is reflected on a metallic guide on the opposite side of the wall with a reading error of 5%. Dipolarization fronts (DFs), characterized by sharp increases in the northward magnetic field and usually preceded by magnetic dips, are suggested to play an important role in energy conversion and transport in the magnetotail. It has been documented that strong energy conversion typically develops right at the fronts. Here we present spacecraft observations of electron‐scale energy conversion (EEC) developed inside the dip region ahead of a DF, by using high‐cadence data from the Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission. The EEC, with magnitude comparable to that at the front, is primarily driven by ion current and electron‐scale electric field. The electric field inside the dip is provided by electrostatic waves fed by lower hybrid drift instability, which experiences temporal decaying. Such decaying leads to nonhomogeneity of EEC along the dawn‐dusk direction. These results, uncovering a new channel for DF‐driven energy conversion, can provide important insights into understanding energy transport in the magnetotail. Plain Language Summary: Space weather is determined by earthward transport of energy and mass in the magnetosphere. In the magnetotail, such transport is usually associated with dipolarization fronts embedded inside high‐speed plasma jets, which are characterized by a sharp enhancement of the northward component of the magnetic field and serve as the leading boundaries of plasma jets. Statistical studies reveal that a small decrease in the magnetic field often occurs ahead of the fronts, which is dubbed as a magnetic dip. Dipolarization fronts have been suggested to play a key role in the energy conversion chain in the magnetotail, and the energy conversion typically happens right in the front region where strong currents and electric fields usually develop. In this research, we find that in addition to the front region, the dip preceding the fronts can also host strong energy conversion. Our results help further understand energy conversion in the terrestrial magnetotail. Most flexible ionic tactile sensors can hardly be used in deep sea due to their poor antiswelling and anticompression properties under high hydrostatic pressure. To achieve pressure and position sensing under high hydrostatic pressure, a self‐powered underwater tactile sensor made of a porous thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) film is presented in this paper. The sensor works by generating an electric current due to the different moving velocities of ions in the porous film under pressing. Experimental results show that the magnitude of the generated current signal increases with the applied pressure, the contacting area, and ion concentration of the solution. The direction and magnitude of the current signal depend on the pressing position of the film. The signal magnitude decreased with the closer to the center of the film. The maximum pressure sensitivity and positioning resolution are 0.62 kPa−1 and 1.31 mm respectively. Response time (0.19 s), 0.67 s recovery time, and 50–600 kPa pressure detection range are achieved. In addition, the signal magnitude is decreased only by 15.53% when the sensor is placed underwater at a simulated depth of 100 m. Proof of concept demonstration of underwater autonomously grasping objects of different weights with this sensor is successfully achieved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Magnon, the quanta of spin waves, can serve as an efficient spin information carrier for memory and logic applications, with the advantages of the Joule-heating free induced low power-dissipation property and the phase-coherent induced quantum phenomena. In analogy to spintronics, magnonics focuses on the excitation, detection, and manipulation of magnons (spin waves). In recent years, with the development of nanotechnology, abundant magnonic phenomena emerge in the nanoscale, such as the spin Seebeck effect, magnon-mediated electric current drag effect, magnon valve effect, magnon junction effect, magnon resonant transimission, magnon transfer torque, spin wave propagation, subterahertz spin wave excitation, magnon Bose–Einstein condensation, and so on. Iridium catalyzed electrochemical coupling of naphthols with acrylates for the syntheses of naphtho[1,8‐bc]furan derivatives are herein reported. Ir‐catalyzed electrochemical C−H annulation is accomplished within a supportive catalysis manifold, paving the way for electrooxidative C−H acrylation via weak O‐coordination. The merge of iridium catalysts and electric current not only minimizes the need for a stoichiometric amount of chemical oxidants but also confirms broad reaction compatibility with a variety of electronically and sterically diverse substrates. This work proposes and investigates a wide‐angle band‐pass frequency selective surface (FSS) with two sharp sidebands. The presented FSS element is made up of three metallic layers and two substrate layers in between, which are surrounded by a substrate‐integrated waveguide (SIW) cavity. The top metallic layer is identical to the bottom layer, composed of a square patch etched with a hexagonal groove, while the middle layer is a similar patch but with rectangular notch edges. This structure achieves a second‐order band‐pass response with highly frequency selectivity on either side of the passband. At the same time, this FSS demonstrates excellent stability for both transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarizations with incident angles between 0° and 60°. The electric current and field distributions are demonstrated for deep analysis. Furthermore, an equivalent circuit model is developed to further understand the operating mechanisms. To verify the validity of the design, we construct a prototype of the SIW‐based FSS (SIW‐FSS) and measured it. There is a fair degree of agreement between the measured and simulated results. One crucial objective of this article is to present simplified and accurate approaches to study the current distribution and ground surface potential around the area surrounding an earthed and isolated system in case of a line‐to‐earth fault. The present study is done in the case of uniform and two‐layer soils. Suggested models for calculating the distribution of the earth's surface current density, step, and touch voltages in grounded and isolated systems are presented, discussed, and adapted. The contact and arc resistances of line to ground faulty conductors are considered. Rods and/or grounding grids usually do grounded systems. The impact of both step and touch potentials and current density are investigated in this article. The methods of the calculations are based on the electrical concepts, the charge simulation method, and the imaging procedure for the grounding system. The suggested method can be considered a novel and simple technique for calculating the current distributions of the ground surface during line to ground fault. The results agree with those obtained by others, with the advantage of the proposed algorithm for its ease of application and simplicity. 3‐D dimensions' contours of the current density and the electric potential on the earth surface around the faulty point are presented in case of homogeneous and two layers' soil. Finally, this article's novelty is to devise a method for calculating the step and touch potentials and current density around the point of contact of the conductor carrying the electric voltages in the event of faults occurring in the electrical network, whether the network is grounded or isolated. The paper relates to the development of an algorithm applicable for maintaining the rotational speed of low-speed drives using PMSM motors and operating under a sign-changing load. The moment of inertia of rotating parts does not play the role of a mechanical stabilizer for the speeds discussed in the article. Simulation studies are presented with the aim of developing a rotational speed control algorithm that utilizes only positional feedback and the previously assumed sign-changing load on the shaft. For the purposes of this research, a mathematical model was developed to calculate transient processes in a PMSM machine operating in the conditions of a sign-changing load on the shaft. This model assumes a deterministic control principle adapted to the known nature of the load change. In this model, the mutual influence occurring between the phase fluxes, the electromagnetic torque, the electric currents and the rotor position angle are established on the basis of FEM analysis of a two-dimensional magnetic field using a quasi-stationary approximation. Principles applicable for controlling a direct low-speed servo drive based on a PMSM machine operating with a known variable shaft load using only positional feedback and a predetermined shaft load change law are defined. The proposed regulation method is verified in an experimental manner. For this purpose, an experimental setup was built, which includes a PMSM with a load imitator on a variable sign shaft, an inverter providing sine-shaped power supply to the machine and a digital dual-processor control system. The discussed rotational speed stabilization algorithm was implemented in the form of a program for a microcontroller, which forms a part of the control system. The results of experimental tests confirm the adequacy of mathematical modeling and the effectiveness of the proposed rotational speed stabilization algorithm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recently, the altermagnetic materials with spin splitting effect (SSE), have drawn significant attention due to their potential to the flexible control of the spin polarization by the Néel vector. Here, the direct and inverse altermagnetic SSE (ASSE) in the (101)‐oriented RuO2 film with the tilted Néel vector are reported. First, the spin torque along the x‐, y‐, and z‐axis is detected from the spin torque‐induced ferromagnetic resonance (ST‐FMR), and the z‐spin torque emerges when the electric current is along the [010] direction, showing the anisotropic spin splitting of RuO2. Further, the current‐induced modulation of damping is used to quantify the damping‐like torque efficiency (ξDL) in RuO2/Py, and an anisotropic ξDL is obtained and maximized for the current along the [010] direction, which increases with the reduction of the temperature, indicating the present of ASSE. Next, by way of spin pumping measurement, the inverse altermagnetic spin splitting effect (IASSE) is studied, which also shows a crystal direction‐dependent anisotropic behavior and temperature‐dependent behavior. This work gives a comprehensive study of the direct and inverse ASSE effects in the altermagnetic RuO2, inspiring future altermagnetic materials and devices with flexible control of spin polarization. To date, new prototype device for directly converting chemical energy into electricity is still the most important pursuit although various types of fuel cells have been developed/commercialized. In this work, a novel (101¯0$10\bar{1}0$) orientated ZnO single crystal device is reported that generates electricity using the usual redox reactions. The principle of the device is similar to that of a photovoltaic device, known as a chem‐voltaic device. The air‐KBH4 chem‐voltaic device has an open‐circuit voltage (Voc) of 2.14 ± 0.007 mV and a short‐circuit current (Isc) of 1.44 ± 0.007 µA. The Voc and Isc increase to 2.24 mV and 2.81 µA, respectively, by preadding H2O2. A similar phenomenon is also observed when glucose is used to substitute KBH4. When KBH4 or glucose solution is added to the ZnO (101¯0$10\bar{1}0$) surface, it reacts with chemisorbed oxygen to produce free electrons. Due to the presence of the spontaneous electric field (Es) in the polar [0001] azimuth of ZnO, these free electrons move along the [0001] direction, producing an electric current. So chemical energy is converted into electricity. This finding opens up research on the chem‐voltaic cell. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary The aim of this paper is to present a methodology for solving а dynamic electric circuit with nonlinear hysteretic inductor without the use of hysteresis model or equivalent circuits. A consideration of nonlinear and hysteretic behaviour of the magnetic core under quasistatic conditions is based on applying harmonics interpolation method (HIM) to the measured magnetising field strength waveforms. A dynamic behaviour of the magnetic core is considered through the application of the statistical theory of losses (STL). A considered electric circuit consists of AC voltage source connected in series with shunt resistor, additional linear resistor and inductor, as well as a nonlinear hysteretic inductor. The solution for electric current of the circuit is obtained by solving equation derived from Kirchhoff's laws through a series of successive iterations. Coupling of electric and magnetic part of the circuit is obtained from fundamental laws of electromagnetism. Methodology is validated for four cases of the considered electric circuit — without additional elements, with one additional or both additional elements, for sinusoidal voltage source amplitudes of 2, 4, 6, 8 and 9 V and frequency of 50 Hz. Validation is repeated for frequencies of 100, 200 and 300 Hz while keeping the ratio of the amplitude to frequency constant. In this paper, we develop a nonlinear mixed finite element method for flexoelectric semiconductors and analyze the mechanically tuned redistributions of free carriers and electric currents through flexoelectric polarization in typical structures. We first present a macroscopic theory for flexoelectric semiconductors by combining flexoelectricity and nonlinear drift-diffusion theory. To use C0 continuous elements, we derive an incremental constrained weak form by introducing Langrage multipliers, in which the kinematic constraints between the displacement and its gradient are guaranteed. Based on the weak form, we established a mixed C0 continuous nine-node quadrilateral finite element as well as an iterative process for solving nonlinear boundary-value problems. The accuracy and convergence of the proposed element are validated by comparing linear finite element method results against analytical solutions for the bending of a beam. Finally, the nonlinear element method is applied to more complex problems, such as a circular ring, a plate with a hole, and an isosceles trapezoid. To enhance the electrical safe operation area (eSOA) of laterally diffused metal oxide semiconductor (LDMOS) transistors, a novel reduced surface electric field (Resurf) structure in the n-drift region is proposed, which was fabricated by ion implantation at the surface of the LDMOS drift region and by drift region dimension optimization. Technology computer-aided design (TCAD) simulations show that the optimal value of Resurf ion implantation dose 1 × 1012 cm−2 can reduce the surface electric field in the n-drift region effectively, thereby improving the ON-state breakdown voltage of the device (BVon). In addition, the extended n-drift region length of the Ld design also improves device BVon significantly, and is aimed at reducing the current density and the electric field, and eventually suppressing the n-drift region impact ionization. The results show that the novel 60 V nLDMOS has a competitive BVon performance of 106.9 V, which is about 20% higher than that of the conventional one. Meanwhile, the OFF-state breakdown voltage of the device (BVoff) of 88.4 V and the specific ON-resistance (RON,sp) of 129.7 mΩ⋅mm2 exhibit only a slight sacrifice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reverse electrodialysis (RED) is one of the methods able to generate energy from the salinity gradient between sea- and river water. The technique is based on the diffusion of ions through membranes that specifically allow either cations or anions to pass through. This ion current is converted into an external electric current at electrodes via suitable redox reactions. Seawater contains mainly eight different ions and the description of transport phenomena in membranes in classical terms of isolated species is not sufficient because the different particles have different velocities—in the same direction or opposite—in the same membrane. More realistic is the Maxwell–Stefan (MS) theory that takes all interactions between the different particles in account; however, such a model is complex and validation is difficult. Therefore, a simplified system is used with solely NaCl in solution, using only 9 diffusivities in the calculation. These values are estimated from the literature and are applied to an MS model of the RED process. Using experimental data of NaCl and water transport as well as power density, these diffusivities are adapted in the MS model. Reliable values for the diffusivities were obtained for the following three interactions: H2O–Na+, H2O–Cl− and Na+–Cl−. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The ever-increasing needs of the working population have led to the development of various branches of industry, an increase in the number of employees, and a rise in the number of work-related accidents. The welder occupation is one of the most sought after occupations in Europe, according to the EURopean Employment Services (EURES) statistics. Taking into account the work system in which welders conduct their activity (uncomfortable working positions, splashes, high temperatures, mechanical factors, gases and fumes, magnetic fields due to electric current), the paper presents the risk factors identified for the welder occupation, based on the occupational injury and illness risk assessments. Following the analysis of 25 risk assessments, carried out by the assessment team that must include qualified evaluators, process specialists, the workers' representative, occupational health and safety responsible at various industrial economic agents, a total of 70 main risk factors of occupational accidents and diseases were identified for the welder occupation. Risk factors were classified according to four main work components: worker, workload, work environment, and means of production. To reflect the importance of the identified risk factor, the number of organizations that considered that the risk was likely to occur but also the possibility that the risk was above the acceptable limit, calculated using the National Institute for Research and Development for Labor Protection "Alexandru Darabont" (INCDPM) method, a method often used in Romania, was identified from the analyzed assessments. Finally, a prevention and protection plan was drawn up with regard to the risks identified for the welder occupation, the final aim of which was to respectively reduce the probability of occurrence with the severity of the risks identified. The prevalence of complications due to the presence of biofilms in dental implant surfaces and their relationship with peri-implant diseases, namely peri-implantitis, remain difficult problems to overcome. The information available about the application of electric current on dental implant biofilms; its parameters, namely current level, voltage and exposure time; and related effects are still not enough to understand which individual mechanisms are caused by this technique, culminating in the decrease or eradication of the biofilm. The purpose of this narrative review, based on a systematic search, is to understand the effect of electric current directly applied to biofilms present in dental implants and which parameters are used. For the systematic search, electronic databases including MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, up to and including November 2023, were searched. Seven studies were included. A 12-item checklist was used to assess their methodological quality. All studies used direct/constant electric current; however, that use was not achieved by the same protocol/set-up. Parameters such as current, voltage, resistance, and actuation time were different in all studies. Monospecies and multi-species biofilm were used in the substrate made of titanium. The results indicate that the use of constant and alternating electric current directly applied to dental implant's surfaces is a promising way to treat problems related to biofilms and peri-implant diseases. Recently, the altermagnetic materials with spin splitting effect (SSE), have drawn significant attention due to their potential to the flexible control of the spin polarization by the Néel vector. Here, the direct and inverse altermagnetic SSE (ASSE) in the (101)‐oriented RuO2 film with the tilted Néel vector are reported. First, the spin torque along the x‐, y‐, and z‐axis is detected from the spin torque‐induced ferromagnetic resonance (ST‐FMR), and the z‐spin torque emerges when the electric current is along the [010] direction, showing the anisotropic spin splitting of RuO2. Further, the current‐induced modulation of damping is used to quantify the damping‐like torque efficiency (ξDL) in RuO2/Py, and an anisotropic ξDL is obtained and maximized for the current along the [010] direction, which increases with the reduction of the temperature, indicating the present of ASSE. Next, by way of spin pumping measurement, the inverse altermagnetic spin splitting effect (IASSE) is studied, which also shows a crystal direction‐dependent anisotropic behavior and temperature‐dependent behavior. This work gives a comprehensive study of the direct and inverse ASSE effects in the altermagnetic RuO2, inspiring future altermagnetic materials and devices with flexible control of spin polarization. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of electric current stressing on damping properties of Sn5Sb solder. Design/methodology/approach: Uniformly shaped Sn5Sb solders were prepared as samples. The length, width and thickness of the samples were 60.0, 5.0 and 0.5 mm, respectively. The damping properties of the samples were tested by dynamic mechanical analyzer with a cooling system to control the test temperature in the range of −100 to 100°C. Simultaneously, electric current was imposed to the tested samples using a direct current supply. After tests, the samples were characterized using scanning electron microscope, electron backscatter diffraction and transmission electron microscope, which was aimed to figure out the damping mechanism in terms of electric current stressing induced microstructure evolution. Findings: It is confirmed experimentally that the increase in damping properties is due to Joule heating and athermal effects of current stressing, in which Joule heating should make a higher contribution. G–L theory can be used to explain the damping properties of strain amplitude under current stressing by quantitative description of geometrically necessary dislocation density. While the critical strain amplitude and high temperature activation energy decrease with increasing electric current. Originality/value: These results provide a new method for vibration reliability evaluation of high-temperature lead-free solders in serving electronics. Notably, this method should be also inspiring for the mechanical performance evaluation and reliability assessment of conductive materials and structures serving under electric current stressing.
