Communication skills are one of the 21st century skills. Specific communication in biology learning includes science communication. The purpose of the study was to analyze the improvement of science communication skills using E-Worksheet assisted by PhET on nervous system material. This research and development consist of three stages: the preliminary study stage, the product development stage and the product testing stage. Static-Group Pretest-Posttest research design. This study involved 35 students in the experimental class and 35 students in the control class selected using Purposive Sampling. The research instrument consisted of a validation questionnaire and limited description with indicators of science communication. Data analysis informs that e-worksheet is very feasible with an average score of 83.83%. The improvement of science communication skills on the nervous system material in the classroom using e-worksheet assisted by PhET simulation with an overall N-Gain value of 0.56 with moderate criteria. E-Worksheet assisted by PhET simulation helps the learning process. The guide to using E-Worksheet assisted by PhET simulation should be clearer and more detailed and provide training for teachers to be more familiar with electronics.

To date, information related the skeletal morphology of fish in Indonesia is still limited. Therefore, we firstly described the morphology of the cranium of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) collected from aquaculture pond in Aceh Province, Indonesia. In the present study, research methodology included the preparation of cranium, photographing, editing images and identifying the terminology of cranium. The cranium was prepared physically and chemically. Each part of the cranium was documented using a Canon EOS 700D camera and edited using Adobe Photoshop CS6. The cranium nomenclature was determined by comparing the similarity of the shape and location of each part of the fish cranium that has been studied previously. The cranium of African catfish was divided into two major parts, namely neurocranium (ossa neurocranii) and splanchnocranium (ossa splanchnocranii). Neurocranium had four regions belonging to etmoidal, orbital, otic and occipital, while splanchnocranium had five regions belonging to maxillaris, mandibularis, arcus mandibularis, arcus hyoideus, and apparatus operculare. The African catfish had a strong and thick neurocranium structure. However, orbital, arcus hyoideus and apparatus operculare regions were not well developed. The results of this study could be used as a basic for further research, especially in the field of taxonomy and phylogeny of fish.

Introduction: With the containment of the COVID-19 pandemic in Côte d’Ivoire, efforts were made to seamlessly integrate COVID-19 vaccination into the national immunization program. A collaborative initiative involving UNICEF, WHO, GAVI, and partner organizations resulted in the creation of the COVID-19 Vaccine Integration Mapping Tool. This paper presents a case study documenting the field testing of the integration mapping tool and assessing the integration of COVID-19 vaccination within primary healthcare and routine immunization in Côte d’Ivoire. The study aims to describe the pilot process, gather feedback on tool usefulness and challenges, and establish integration priorities through roadmap development. Methods: Under the guidance of the Ministry of Health and Universal Coverage Cabinet, a workshop was conducted with participants from major health programs to field test the tool. Data analysis was performed using Excel, and the results were presented through tables, heat maps, and line graphs. Results: The first-of-its-kind field test of the integration mapping tool in Côte d’Ivoire showcased its potential to bring key partners together to discuss the current state of integration, improve transparency about resource allocation, and enhance data management for the incorporation of COVID-19 vaccination into existing immunization systems. The integration of COVID-19 vaccines in Côte d’Ivoire showed a moderate level of progress, with improvement needed in resource allocation, payment systems, targeting of highest-risk groups and vaccine administration. Support should be increased for target population identification, distribution points, quality of care mechanisms, and health personnel training. Health information systems and access to essential medicines were relatively satisfactory. Integration into existing programs, intersectoral collaboration, national health strategy, communication strategy, community participation, and data utilization require improvement. The post-workshop satisfaction survey gave the tool a score of 7 out of 10. Early lessons from Côte d’Ivoire provide guidance on enhancing integration, focusing on data-driven decision-making, collaboration, stakeholder engagement, and effective leadership. Conclusions: The field test of the integration mapping tool (IMT) in Côte d’Ivoire is groundbreaking as it exemplifies the transformative potential of innovative tools in immunization practices. Application of the IMT sets a precedent for seamless COVID-19 vaccination integration worldwide, emphasizing data-driven decision-making, collaboration, timing, and leadership. The success of the pilot exercise in Côte d’Ivoire was attributed to political commitment, well-facilitated workshops, assessments, and the fact that the team in the country had previously developed an initial integration plan.

Based on the preliminary analysis, one of the things needed in learning is a learning media that describes the material clearly, briefly, easily understood, and fulfills offline and online learning. This research aims to develop a digital comic learning media on the concept of the human excretory system. This study uses the R&D (Research and Development) method with the ADDIE model. The instruments in this study include a validation questionnaire, practicality test sheets, readability questionnaire, and student response questionnaire sheets to the developed digital comic learning media. The research data were analyzed quantitatively by calculating the percentage. The results showed that the digital comics learning media was valid and feasible to be used as learning media (combined average of 83%). The results of the student response test showed a very good response to the digital comic learning media with a percentage of 84%

Technological developments can make it easier for consumers to give an assessment or review of the products they buy and the results of these reviews can influence consumers to be interested or not buy, buying products after knowing information from consumers directly or indirectly through online reviews. This study aims to determine other people's recommendations and social media facilities on the interest in buying a CV. Consina Sagara Alam backpack product. The research method used is descriptive and verification with a sample of 100 respondents. Data collection techniques used are observation questionnaires and literature studies. The statistical analysis method used is path analysis with partial hypothesis testing (t-test) and simultaneously (f-test). The results of the t-test show that there is a significant positive effect between other people's recommendations and purchase interest and there is a significant positive effect between social media facilities and purchase interest. While the results of the f-test showed that there was a significant influence between other people's recommendations and social media facilities on purchase interest.

Abstract: Mercury is a dangerous contaminant for aquatic organisms. Seurukan fish (Osteochilus vittatus) is a type of fish in the Krueng Sabee river that is vulnerable to mercury exposure. The study's purposes were to investigate the effect of mercury on the biometric conditions of Seurukan Fish in the Krueng Sabee River, Aceh Jaya Regency. A total of 90 Seurukan fish consisting of 50 males and 40 females were collected from 3 research stations. The research stations represent the upstream area (Station 1), median river bodies (Station 2), and the downstream area (Station 3). Fish samples were taken from July to August 2019. The main parameters observed included class interval, sex ratio, length-weight relationship, condition factors, mercury concentration in sediment and liver, and hepatosomatic index. The results showed that the mercury content in the sediments of the Krung Sabee River was increased both spatially and temporally. Station 1, located in the upstream area, has the highest mercury content in the sediment was 6.278 ± 0.987 mg/kg. Mercury content in liver of Seurukan Fish ranged from 0.182 ± 0.100 mg/kg to 0.198±0.152 mg/kg. Mercury contamination in the Krueng Sabee river caused a decrease in biometric conditions of Seurukan Fish. Seurukan Fish exposed to mercury tended to have smaller size, an unbalanced sex ratio, low hepatosomatic index value, and negative allometric growth pattern. Abstrak: Merkuri merupakan salah satu jenis kontaminan berbahaya bagi organisme akuatik. Ikan seurukan (Osteochilus vittatus) merupakan salah satu jenis ikan di sungai Krueng Sabee yang rentan terpapar merkuri. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji pengaruh merkuri terhadap kondisi biometrik ikan seurukan di sungai Krueng Sabee, Kabupaten Aceh Jaya. Sebanyak 90 ekor ikan Seurukan yang terdiri dari 50 ekor jantan dan 40 ekor betina dikoleksi dari 3 stasiun penelitian. Stasiun penelitian mewakili wilayah hulu (stasiun 1), badan sungai (stasiun 2) dan wilayah hilir (stasiun 3). Pengambilan sampel ikan dilakukan pada bulan Juli hingga Agustus 2019. Parameter utama yang diamati meliputi selang kelas, nisbah kelamin dan hubungan panjang bobot ikan, faktor kondisi, konsentrasi merkuri pada sedimen dan hati serta indeks hepatosomatik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kandungan merkuri di sedimen Sungai Krung Sabee mengalami peningkatan baik secara spasial dan temporal. Stasiun 1 yang terletak di wilayah hulu memiliki kandungan merkuri dalam sedimen paling tinggi yaitu sebesar 6,278 ± 0,987 mg/kg. Kandungan merkuri pada hati ikan seurukan di Sungai Krueng Sabee berkisar antara 0,182 ± 0,100 mg/kg hingga 0,198 ± 0,152 mg/kg. Kontaminasi merkuri pada sungai Krueng Sabee menyebabkan dampak negatif terhadap kondisi biometrik ikan seurukan. Ikan seurukan yang terpapar merkuri cenderung memiliki ukuran panjang dan bobot yang lebih kecil, nisbah kelamin yang tidak seimbang, dan nilai indeks hepatosomatik yang rendah serta pola pertumbuhan alometrik negatif.

The objective of the present study was to analyze the morphometrics variation of three male fiddler crab species collected from Jaboi mangrove area, Weh island, Indonesia. A total of 50 male fiddler crab species from each species (Tubuca dussumieri, Gelasimus vocans and Austruca perplexa) were collected from three research station used digging method and direct capture. The number of morphological characters that measured was 18 characters. The water quality and soil parameters observed were salinity, pH of water and soil, water temperature, C-organic concentration in substrate and sediment type. ANOVA (confidence interval of 95%) and Discriminant Function Analysis was used for analizing the morphometric variation beetwen species. The results showed that the mangrove area of Jaboi, Weh island provides a suitable habitat characteristic for male fiddler crab. Tubuca dussumieri and Gelasius vocans tend distributed in the area with sediment type of mud, while Austruca perplexa tends distributed in the area with sediment type of sand. The result of statistical analysis showed that there were ten separate characters between Tubuca dussumieri and Gelasimus vocans, 17 separate characters between Tubtubuca dussumieri and Austruca perplexa, and 13 separate characters between Gelasimus vocans and Austruca perplexa. Morphometrics variation can be observed in the carapace, propodus, mouth, walking legs, and eye stalks. Sebanyak 50 ekor kepiting biola jantan dari masing masing jenis (Tubuca dussumieri, Gelasimus vocans dan Austruca perplexa) dikoleksi dari tiga titik stasiun penelitian menggunakan metode digging dan pengambilan langsung. Jumlah karakter morfometrik kepiting jantan yang diukur adalah sebanyak 18 karakter. Parameter kualitas air dan tanah yang diukur meliputi salinitas, pH air, pH tanah, suhu air, kandungan C-organik subtrat dan tipe sedimen. Analisis terhadap data morfometrik dilakukan menggunakan ANOVA (selang kepercayaan 95%) dan Discriminant Function Analysis. Hasil penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa kawasan mangrove Jaboi, Pulau Weh memiliki karakteristik habitat yang sesuai bagi kepiting biola. Tubuca dussumieri dan Gelasimus vocans cenderung terdistribusi pada wilayah dengan persentase tipe sedimen lumpur yang lebih tinggi, sementara Austruca perplexa cenderung terdistribusi pada wilayah dengan persentase tipe sedimen pasir yang lebih tinggi. Hasil analisis statistik menunjukkan bahwa terdapat 10 karakter pembeda antara Tubuca dussumieri dengan Gelasimus vocans, 17 karakter pembeda antara Tubtubuca dussumieri dengan Austruca perplexa dan 13 karakter pembeda antara Gelasimus vocans dengan Austruca perplexa. Abstract. Fishpond is one of the habitats from organisme such as plankton which is have a role as main food resources for organisms with high trophic level (such as fish). This objectives of the study were to determine the condition of plankton in grouper fishponds in Mesjid Lama Village, Talawi District, Batu Bara District. Plankton sampling and water quality measurements were carried out from February to June 2019. The abundance of phytoplankton in grouper fish ponds varied between 1,765-4,113 ind/L. The composition of phytoplankton species found during observation was dominated by diatom groups or Bacillariophyceae classes. The abundance of zooplankton in grouper ponds varied from 330-1,165 ind/L with the lowest abundance found at station 6 with a total of 330 ind/L and the highest abundance was found at station 4 with a number of 1,165 ind/L. Desa Mesjid Lama sebagai salah satu daerah pesisir di Kabupaten Batu Bara yang memiliki potensi sumber daya perikanan khususnya tambak ikan kerapu, namun permasalahan pada tambak kerapu adalah kurangnya pemahaman pengeloaan kualitas air hingga produksi panen menurun. Hal ini diakibatkan banyaknya ikan yang sakit hingga mengalami kematian. Program pengabdian masyarakat akan dilaksanakan di kelompok pembudidayaan ikan kerapu “Kompak Bersama” Desa Kampung Mesjid Kabupaten Batu Bara. Metode yang digunakan dalam kegiatan ini adalah memberikan pendidikan, pelatihan, dan pendampingan manajemen kualitas air bagi pembesaran kerapu. Kegiatan difokuskan pada upaya perbaikan mutu kualitas air dengan menggunakan bahan-bahan yang ramah lingkungan, dan upaya pencegahan penyakit ikan. Kegiatan pelatihan dan pendampingan pengelolaan kualitas air dan pembuatan pakan ikan mandiri sebagai pakan alternative yang dapat menekan biaya pengeluran pakan, serta peningkatan keterampilan mitra terkait cara budidaya ikan yang baik (CBIB) yang ramah lingkungan dan dilanjutkan dengan proses pengelolaan manajemen kualitas air di tambak kerapu. pendidikan, pelatihan, dan pendampingan manajemen kualitas air akan dilakukan menyeluruh dan merata pada lokasi usaha mitra. Bentuk Luaran yang ditargetkan adalah jurnal nasional tidak terakreditasi, modul dan buku ajar yang berjudul Manajemen Kualitas Air pada Tambak Ikan Kerapu, publikasi pada seminar nasional, media cetak dan youtube.

Environmental characteristics can influence the distribu-tion of animal communities including fish in aquatic habitats such as a river. The study of fish communities in Cisadea River aimed to learn the relation between the fish community structure and the environmental characteristics of the river itself. This research was conducted in Cisadea River, Cianjur Regency, West Java, Indone-sia during dry season from July 2012 until February 2013. Samples of fish were caught using active fishing gear (Electrofishing Gear, spreading nets, scoop, lift net) and passive fishing gear (trap). The results showed that the quality of the physical chemistry of Cisadea waters was still in the normal range that could support fish life. The fish community in Cisadea River consisted of 11 orders, 26 families, 35 genera and 48 species. During the study, Rhyacichthys aspro (19,85%) and Glyptothorax plathypogon (20,15%) were the domi-nant species caught. The diversity index value (H’) was 2.87 (mid-dle category) with the dominance value of 0.09 (low category) and evenness value of 0.74 (high category). Moreover, community simi-larities according to the presence of species made the LC1 and LC2 locations in one group while the LC3 locations in a separate group.

Ikan lele merupakan salah satu komoditas unggulan perikanan budidaya yang digulirkan oleh Kementerian Kelautan dan Perikanan. Produksi ikan lele secara nasional terus meningkat setiap tahunnya. Pemanfaatan ikan lele melalui produk diversifikasi hasil perikanan perlu dilakukan untuk meningkatkan nilai ekonomisnya, salah satunya sebagai bahan baku produk antara yang disebut surimi. Pengolahan surimi dari bahan baku ikan air tawar termasuk ikan lele masih terus dikembangkan karena kualitas gel yang dihasilkan masih rendah salah satu perlakuan yang dapat memperbaiki kualitas surimi yaitu dengan perlakuan ozonasi. Ozon merupakan oksidator kuat yang dimanfaatkan menguraikan senyawa organik (degradation). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menetapkan hubungan antara lama penyimpanan dengan kekuatan gel dari ikan lele hasil ozonasi selama penyimpanan pada suhu 4 ± 10C. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode eksperimental yang dilanjutkan dengan analisa regresi dan percobaan akan dilakukan ulangan sebanyak 2 (dua) kali. Percobaan terdiri dari 2 perlakuan, yaitu tanpa ozonasi dan ozonasi pada konsentrasi 3,3 ppm. Analisis dilakukan selama 8 hari dalam interval waktu analisis setiap 2 hari. Hasil Penelitian menunjukan ozonasi dapat memperbaiki kekuatan gel dan menghambat penurunan kekuatan gel selama penyimpanan.

Problem-solving is one of the century skills 21 and are included in the 2013 curriculum. Students with low problem-solving abilities will have difficulty completing math problems that require high-level thinking. Learning media that does not contain problem-solving skills will hinder the achievement of student competence. This research has two objectives. The first objective is to analyze the needs of learning media that are in accordance with student characteristics, curriculum, learning models and teacher readiness. The second objective is to design discovery learning based learning media to improve students' problem-solving abilities. This research uses design research method with type of development studies. The research subjects consisted of teachers and students. Data collection instruments used interview guidelines, observation guidelines, and questionnaires. Interview guides to get information from teachers and students regarding the readiness of teachers in applying the 2013 curriculum and learning difficulties in mathematics. Observation guidelines are used to obtain information about student learning characteristics. The questionnaire is used to get the needs of mathematics learning media. The data analyzed using qualitative descriptive. Research provides several results. First, most students consider learning less attractive. Second, the 2013 curriculum cannot be fully implemented in the classroom. Third, discovery learning models can improve problem-solving skills. Fourth, the design of discovery learning based learning media. This study concludes that discovery learning based media to improve problem-solving skills need to be developed. Food security is one of the health problems in Indonesia which is related to the lack of knowledge of how the production process, the hygiene and health of the food. This study aims to describe the sanitary and hygienic conditions of food sold by merchant in Cibiru, Bandung City, West Java. The study was conducted in May-June 2017 by determining five sampling location based on the number of merchant in Cibiru. Data was obtained through questionnaire filling of 40 respondents at each sampling point which was then analyzed to find out the characteristics of social-demographic of the respondents, personal hygiene, and support of environmental sanitation. The results shows that the sanitation and hygiene of food in the aspect of knowledge of personal hygiene showed that the food handler was experienced food processors (88%) and 12% had no experience even though their last education was not linear with their trading profession. In addition, respondents' knowledge of individual hygiene shows that out of the nine aspects observed, 33% are in the high category, 11% are moderate and 56% are in the low category. Aspects of environmental sanitation and other support of food sanitation show that the conditions are in the clean and adequate category. All of these aspects can be used as a basic consideration in further counseling about food hygiene and food processing so that it can avoid unpredictable outbreaks.

Tanning industry produces liquid waste containing heavy metals, especially chromium – harmful for ecosystems and human health. Phytoremediation is a technique that utilizes the physiologicalpotential of plants to transform contaminants to be less or non-hazardous. The aim of the research is to determine the efficiency of Ceratophyllum demersum L. to remediate chrome in tannery wastewater. The research used 84 strands of C. demersum compound leaves of 30 g wet weight. The treatments consist of the use of 7.74 mg/L, 11.30 mg/L, 17.00 mg/L and 23.73 mg/L concentrations of chromium and a control. The research was conducted using a static method. The design of the experiment was the complete random design with 3 replication of treatment in 14 days. The parameters observed were the efficiency of chromium phytoremediation, water turbidity, BOD, and total chlorophyll level of the leaves. The results showed that the highest efficiency was at the concentration of 7.74 mg/L with 1.7% chromium, 17.3% water turbidity, and 46% BOD. Meanwhile, the highest efficiency of total chlorophyll level was 3.88 mg/L, reached at the concentration of 17.00 mg/L. In conclusion, C. demersum is good to use as a phytoremediator of tannery wastewater at the concentration of 7.74 mg/L, subsequently, these results can be used as a basis for the consideration of the application implementation in the process of liquid waste reduction.

Bank Indonesia merupakan bank sentral Republik Indonesia yang mempunyai satu tujuan tunggal yaitu mencapai dan memelihara kestabilan nilai rupiah. Uang kartal adalah uang yang beredar di masyarakat maupun uang kartal yang disimpan sebagai kas di bank umum. Uang kartal yang masuk ke BI melalui setoran dari bank umum disebut inflow dan uang kartal yang keluar dari BI disebut outflow. Selisih antara outflow dan inflow disebut netflow. Keadaan netflow ini akan mempengaruhi naik turunnya likuiditas bank. Hari raya idul fitri merupakan salah satu faktor yang menyebabkan terjadinya fluktuasi yang cukup tinggi pada netflow. Karena setiap tahunnya hari raya idul fitri bergeser maju 11 hari, maka metode peramalan yang tepat untuk memodelkan netflow adalah dengan menggunakan metode time series regression with calendar variation effect. Setelah dilakukan pemodelan, didapatkan model yang memuat variasi kalender dan cukup sesuai untuk menangkap pola dari data netflow sebelumnya, dan model sudah memenuhi asumsi yang dibutuhkan. Dibandingkan dengan metode yang sebelumnya sudah digunakan oleh BI yaitu metode ARIMA dan ekstrapolasi data, model ini memberikan pendekatan yang lebih baik pada netflow. Model ini dapat digunakan untuk meramalkan netflow selanjutnya yang dapat membantu BI untuk mengambil kebijakan moneter yang harus dijalankan.

Kementrian Agama kota Serang adalah salah satu lembaga yang berada dibawah Menteri Agama Republik Indonesia, Salah satu tugas utamanya adalah mengelola lembaga pendidikan islam yaitu madrasah diniyah, madrasah ibtida’iyah, madrasah pondok pesantren, dan juga pengelolaan dana bantuan operasional pendidikan. kurangnya akurasi antara kriteria dan persyaratan penerima BOP sehingga rentan terjadi manipulasi, oleh karena itu maka dibutuhkan sebuah sistem pendukung keputusan untuk memberikan rekomendasi terhadap penetapan penerima bantuan operasional pendidikan (BOP) yang akurat. Metode MCDM yang sesuai diterapkan untuk menyelesaikan permasalahan penetapan penerima BOP ini adalah metode Weighted Product Model (WPM) karena alasan kesederhanaan dan juga sesuai dengan proses pemilihan alternatif. Adapun Kriteria penerima bantuan operasional pendidikan (BOP) antara lain: minimal memiliki siswa 60 orang, memiliki izin operasional, bangunan fisik , minimal memiliki 4 kelas, minimal memiliki 4 orang pengajar, usia madrasah minimal 2 tahun, tidak sedang mendapatkan bantuan dari instansi lain. tujuan penelitian ini adalah menerapkan metode MCDM untuk membangun aplikasi sistem pendukung keputusan penentuan penerima BOP madrasah dan memudahkan bagian Kementrian Agama untuk menyeleksi calon penerima bantuan operasional pendidikan. pada penelitian ini menghasilkan sebuah sistem pendukung keputusan untuk memberikan rekomendasi terhadap penetapan penerima bantuan operasional pendidikan (BOP) madrasah, aplikasi ini dibangun dengan menggunakan Delphi 7 dan database MySql.

This study was undertaken to evaluate an enzyme immunoassay (EIA) for hepatitis C virus antibody detection (anti-HCV), using just one antigen. Anti-HCV EIA was designed to detect anti-HCV IgG using on the solid-phase a recombinant C22 antigen localized at the N-terminal end of the core region of HCV genome, produced by BioMérieux. The serum samples diluted in phosphate buffer saline were added to wells coated with the C22, and incubated. After washings, the wells were loaded with conjugated anti-IgG, and read in a microtiter plate reader (492 nm). Serum samples of 145 patients were divided in two groups: a control group of 39 patients with non-C hepatitis (10 acute hepatitis A, 10 acute hepatitis B, 9 chronic hepatitis B, and 10 autoimmune hepatitis) and a study group consisting of 106 patients with chronic HCV hepatitis. In the study group all patients had anti-HCV detected by a commercially available EIA (Abbott®), specific for HCV structural and nonstructural polypeptides, alanine aminotransferase elevation or positive serum HCV-RNA detected by nested-PCR. They also had a liver biopsy compatible with chronic hepatitis. The test was positive in 101 of the 106 (95%) sera from patients in the study group and negative in 38 of the 39 (97%) sera from those in the control group, showing an accuracy of 96%. According to these results, our EIA could be used to detect anti-HCV in the serum of patients infected with hepatitis C virus.

Abstract Introduction The potential of alcohol withdrawal to cause acute coronary events is an area that needs the urgent attention of clinicians and researchers. Case presentation We report the case of a 52-year-old heavy-alcohol-using Sri Lankan man who developed electocardiogram changes suggestive of an acute coronary event during alcohol withdrawal. Despite the patient being asymptomatic, subsequent echocardiogram showed evidence of ischemic myocardial dysfunction. We review the literature on precipitation of myocardial ischemia during alcohol withdrawal and propose possible mechanisms. Conclusions Alcohol withdrawal is a commonly observed phenomenon in hospitals. However, the number of cases reported in the literature of acute coronary events occurring during withdrawal is few. Many cases of acute ischemia or sudden cardiac deaths may be attributed to other well known complications of delirium tremens. This is an area needing the urgent attention of clinicians and epidemiologists.

Abstract We present a patient with severe hypothyroidism complicated by paralytic ileus and acute kidney injury. A 65 year old male patient, diagnosed with hypothyroidism one year ago was transferred to our unit in a state of drowsiness and confusion. He was severely hypothyroid and had paralytic ileus and impaired renal function at the time of transfer. Hypokalaemia was present, and was likely to have contributed to the paralytic ileus and this together with dehydration was likely to have contributed to renal injury. Nonetheless, hypothyroidism is very likely to have been the principal precipitant of both these complications, and both paralytic ileus and acute kidney injury improved with thyroxine replacement. Unfortunately, the patient died unexpectedly eight days after admission to the unit. Hypothyroidism may induce de novo acute kidney injury or it may exacerbate ongoing chronic kidney disease. This rare complication is assumed to be due to the hypodynamic circulatory state created by thyroid hormone deficiency. Paralytic ileus is an even rarer fatal manifestation of hypothyroidism and is thought to be due to an autonomic neuropathy affecting the intestines that is reversible with thyroxine replacement. To our knowledge, both these complications have not been observed in a single patient so far. It is important that clinicians are aware of these rare manifestations of hypothyroidism as in most occasions, thyroxine deficiency may be missed, and treatment can reverse the complications.

Communication skills are one of the 21st century skills. Specific communication in biology learning includes science communication. The purpose of the study was to analyze the improvement of science communication skills using E-Worksheet assisted by PhET on nervous system material. This research and development consist of three stages: the preliminary study stage, the product development stage and the product testing stage. Static-Group Pretest-Posttest research design. This study involved 35 students in the experimental class and 35 students in the control class selected using Purposive Sampling. The research instrument consisted of a validation questionnaire and limited description with indicators of science communication. Data analysis informs that e-worksheet is very feasible with an average score of 83.83%. The improvement of science communication skills on the nervous system material in the classroom using e-worksheet assisted by PhET simulation with an overall N-Gain value of 0.56 with moderate criteria. E-Worksheet assisted by PhET simulation helps the learning process. The guide to using E-Worksheet assisted by PhET simulation should be clearer and more detailed and provide training for teachers to be more familiar with electronics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) serve as crucial mediators of cell-to-cell communication in normal physiology as well as in diseased states; they have been largely studied in regard to their role in cancer progression. However, the mechanisms by which their biogenesis and secretion are regulated by metabolic or endocrine factors remain unknown. Here, we delineate a mechanism by which EV secretion is regulated by a cholesterol metabolite, 27-hydroxycholesterol (27HC), where treatment of myeloid immune cells (RAW 264.7 and J774A.1) with 27HC impairs lysosomal homeostasis, leading to shunting of multivesicular bodies (MVBs) away from lysosomal degradation, toward secretion as EVs. This altered lysosomal function is likely caused by mitochondrial dysfunction and subsequent increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS). Interestingly, cotreatment with a mitochondria-targeted antioxidant rescued the lysosomal impairment and attenuated the 27HC-mediated increase in EV secretion. Overall, our findings establish how a cholesterol metabolite regulates EV secretion and paves the way for the development of strategies to regulate cancer progression by controlling EV secretion. The Sri Lankan government places a high priority on rural development, as a majority of the population living below the poverty line resides in rural areas. Progress is hindered by limited accessibility and resources. Resettlement was used as a strategy to improve the living conditions of the people. New resettlement practices have brought about significant changes in communities, shifting from traditional to modern social systems. This study investigates the emergence of social stratification and their role in facilitating exploitation practices in the Mahaweli resettlement scheme, utilizing sociological theory to understand stratification and inequalities. The study focuses on the social stratification and exploitation patterns in resettlement areas, using a literature review and qualitative data analysis to explore the mode of production, synthesis of social stratification, examination of exploitation among different social strata, and rationalization of exploitation within these areas. External interventions have led to the establishment of social stratification in the resettlement areas, but the strict state administrative framework has posed challenges in maintaining autonomy and establishing a self-reliant social and economic system. Consequently, poverty levels in these regions have increased due to the emergence of new social hierarchies and exploitation in various ways underscoring the need for more comprehensive and effective resettlement initiatives.
