1. The Role of Perceived Parental Attitudes and Self-Esteem in Predicting Secondary School Students' Depression

Abstract

Aim is to determine the extent to which self-esteem and parental attitude perceptions of adolescents predict depression. This is a quantitative research design and the relational screening model was conducted throughout the study. 'Depression Scale', 'Parental Attitude Scale' and 'Self-Esteem Scale' were utilised in the study. The study was conducted on a total of 526 students of whom 276 were female and 249 were male studying in nine different secondary schools in Istanbul during the 2012-2013 academic period. Product-moment correlation coefficient and Stepwise regression analysis were utilised in analysing the data. According to the Product-moment correlation coefficient analysis, a negative significant relationship was detected between depression and democratic attitude sub-dimension of parental attitudes; and a positive significant relationship was detected between depression and authoritarian attitude and protective or willing attitude. Also, a negative significant relationship was detected between depression and self-esteem. Stepwise regression analysis indicated that democratic attitude and self-esteem variables were significant in explaining depression.

2. Psychometric Properties of the Gifted Students' Coping with Anger and Decision Making Skills Scale

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop the scale concerning gifted children's' skills for making decisions and coping with anger and to examine the validity and reliability of the scale. A total of 324 students, which 151 were female and 173 were male, studying in 3 different Science and Arts Center's (BILSEM) in Istanbul during 2014-2015 academic period participated in the study. Content and construct validity tests were conducted for the validity of the scale, internal consistency and test-retest tests were conducted for the reliability and total correlation analysis was conducted. 48.19% of the total variance was explained with the factor analysis. The scale, which consisted of 16 items, demonstrated a two-factor structure titled as coping with anger and decision making. Factor loads of the scale were between 0.54 and 0.78. The Cronbach alpha reliability coefficient was 0.76 for the whole scale, and 0.88 and 0.73 for the coping with anger and decision making sub-scales respectively. The test-retest reliability coefficients for the whole scale was 0.81, and 0.88 and 0.70 for the coping with anger and decision making sub-scales respectively. It was observed that the item-total correlations of the scale ranged between 0.44 and 0.72. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the Scale for Gifted Children's' Coping with Anger and Decision Making Skills is a valid and reliable assessment instrument that can be used for education and psychology.

3. Assessment of Adolescent Perceptions on Parental Attitudes on Different Variables

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine secondary school student perceptions of parental attitudes with regards to specific variables. Independent samples t test for parametric distributions and one-way variance analysis (ANOVA) was used for analyzing the data, when the ANOVA analyses were significant Scheffe test was conducted on homogeneous variance and Tamhane's T2 test was conducted when the analyses were not homogeneous. Kruskal Wallis H test was conducted on non-parametric distributions and Mann Whitney-U test was conducted when the Kruskal Wallis H analyses were significant. It was observed that the democratic attitude dimension, which is a sub-dimension of parental attitudes that students perceive, does not significantly differ from the gender, number of siblings and income level variables; but is significantly different according to the parental educational status, whether parents are alive and marital status of the parents' variables. It was observed that the protective-willing dimension, which is a sub-dimension of parental attitudes that students perceive, does not significantly differ from the gender, income level, whether parents are alive and marital status of the parents' variables; but is significantly different according to the parental educational status and number of siblings' variables. It was observed that the authoritarian dimension, which is a sub-dimension of parental attitudes that students perceive, does not significantly differ from the educational status of mother, number of siblings, income level, whether parents are alive and marital status of parents variables; but is significantly different according to the gender and educational status of the father variables.

4. Gifted Students' and Their Parents' Perceptions of Decision-Making Processes: A Turkish Case

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore the opinions of gifted students and their parents on decision-making processes in Turkey. This study employed a qualitative case study design. Data were collected from ten gifted students and their parents through individual and focus group interviews. The findings indicated that gifted children defined decision making as taking responsibility for an issue, thinking about the positive and negative aspects, reaching a conclusion without a rush by using of own experiences. Before making a decision, gifted children stated that they contemplated the results they would face, to what extent they would be happy and whom this decision would affect. They sought help from their families, then their teachers and friends while reaching a decision. After making a decision, they tried to correct it if they were not satisfied with the decision. Parents emphasized that they respected their children's choices and supported them during this process so that they could make better decisions in the future. The parents added that their children should benefit from their experiences in making crucial decisions.

5. The Perceptions of Parents and Students of the Communication Skills of Gifted Children

Abstract

In the present study we provide insights regarding the perceptions of gifted students and their parents about the communication skills of these gifted children. We collected data through in-depth individual interviews, focus group interviews, field-notes, and other documentation with 10 gifted students and 10 of their parents. The findings indicated several interesting commonalities among these gifted children related to communication including: (1) they defined communication as a needed connection that is established between two or more people through listening and telling, (2) they were better able to share their thoughts and feelings with their families than with their teachers and friends, and (3) they could demand things from their mothers more easily than from other individuals. The results of the present study also indicate that these students enjoyed communicating in social environments and were especially bored by a lack of social stimulation or being alone at home.

Abstract

This study highlights the experiences of Turkish asylum seekers who have been persecuted, victimized, stigmatized, labeled, discriminated against, prosecuted, segregated, and targeted following the Turkish government crackdown after the failed coup attempt in July 2016 and settled in the United States, Canada, and European countries. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field notes, and documentation, conducted, and subsequently analyzed using the principles of Transcendental Phenomenological Analysis. After examining the most frequently repeated concepts in the interviews, the following three themes emerged: 1) labeling, 2) targeting, and 3) social pressure and psychological status. This study showed the depths of the psychological pressure, discrimination, torture, and humiliation that detained and jailed participants who were excluded from society endured. The paper ends with several recommendations for Turkey to rejoin the community of nations protecting, fulfilling, and respecting human rights. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Kültür, amorf yapısıyla tanımlaması güç bir kavramdır. Kültürün bu yapısı, kitle kültürü, popüler kültür ve en nihayetinde kültür endüstrisi gibi kavramların anlaşılmasını da güçleştirmiştir. Şiddeti tanımlamak da kültür kadar zor olmaktadır. Öte yandan koca bir yüzyılın “şiddet yüzyılı” olarak nitelendirilmesine neden olan şiddet, günümüzde yalnızca içi boşaltılmış bir kelimeden ibarettir. Bunu gerçekleştiren ise kültür endüstrisidir. Kültürel ürünlerin salt metaya dönüştürülmesini ifade eden kültür endüstrisi, şiddeti standartlaştırmış, sıradan hale getirmiş, estetize etmiş ve kimi zaman da meşru göstermiştir. Çalışmanın konusu, televizyon dizilerinde yer alan şiddettir. Bu bağlamda çalışma, kültür ürünleri olan dizilerdeki şiddetin sunumunu kültür endüstrisi kavramı çerçevesinde değerlendirmeyi amaç edinmiştir. Bu amaca yönelik “AVLU” ve “KADIN” dizileri karma araştırma yöntemiyle incelenmiştir. Buna göre, incelenen dizilerde şiddet, standartlaştırılmış bir öge olarak karşımıza çıkarken, kimi durumlarda da şiddetin sıradan ve meşru görüldüğünün tespiti yapılmıştır. Ayrıca şiddetin, sorunların çözümünde en sık başvurulan yöntemlerden biri olduğu da tespit edilmiştir. Bu bakımdan çalışmada, televizyon dizileri ve şiddet ilişkisi kültür endüstrisi aracılığıyla yorumlanmakta ve şiddetin televizyon dizileri aracılığıyla sıradan ve normal bir olgu olarak gösterilmesinin toplumsal sorunlara yol açabileceği vurgulanmaktadır Culture is a difficult concept to define with its amorphous structure. This structure of culture has also made it difficult to understand concepts such as mass culture, popular culture, and ultimately the culture industry. Defining violence is as difficult as culture. On the other hand, violence, which has caused an entire century to be described as "the century of violence", is just an empty word today. It is the culture industry that contributes to this. The culture industry, which expresses the transformation of cultural products into merely commodities, has standardized violence, made it ordinary, aestheticized and sometimes legitimized it. The subject of the study is violence in television series. In this context, the study aims to evaluate the presentation of violence in TV series, which are products of the culture within the framework of the culture industry concept. To this purpose, the series "AVLU" and "KADIN" were analyzed with mixed research method. In accordance with that, while violence appears as a standardized element in the analyzed series, it has been evaluated that it is seen as ordinary and legitimate in some cases. In addition, it has been determined that violence is one of the most frequently used methods of solving problems. In this respect, the interprets the relationship between television series and violence through the culture industry and emphasizes that showing violence as an ordinary and normal phenomenon through television series may cause social problems

Abstract

Bu araştırmada ortaokul öğrencilerinin algıladıkları anne-baba tutumları ile benlik saygısı ve depresyon düzeyi arasındaki ilişki araştırılmıştır. Tarama modeline göre yapılan araştırmada, öğrencilerin algılanan anne-baba tutumlarını belirleyebilmek için Kuzgun (1972) tarafından geliştirilip daha sonra Kuzgun ve Eldeleklioğlu (1993) tarafından revize edilen Anne-Baba Tutum Ölçeği, öğrencilerin benlik saygısını belirleyebilmek için Çuhadaroğlu (1985) tarafından Türkçeye uyarlanan Benlik Saygısı Ölçeği, öğrencilerin depresyon düzeyini belirleyebilmek için Öy (1991) tarafından Türkçeye uyarlanan Çocuklar İçin Depresyon Ölçeği ve bağımsız değişkenlerle ilgili veri toplamak için de Kişisel Bilgi Formu kullanılmıştır.Araştırmanın evreni 2012?2013 eğitim-öğretim yılında İstanbul ili Fatih ilçesindeki devlet ortaokullarında okuyan öğrencilerdir. Araştırmanın örneklemini ise 526 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır.Araştırmada verileri analiz etmek için parametrik dağılımlarda bağımsız gruplar t testi (independent sample t test) ve tek yönlü varyans analizi (ANOVA) kullanılmış, ANOVA analizlerinin anlamlı çıktığı durumlarda homojen varyanslarda Scheffe testi, analizlerinin homojen olmadığı durumlarda ise Tamhane's T2 testi kullanılmıştır. Ayrıca non-parametrik dağılımlarda Kruskal Wallis H testi ve Mann Whitney-U testi kullanılmıştır.Araştırmanın bulgularına göre öğrenciler, anne-babalarının tutumlarını daha çok demokratik olarak algılamaktadırlar. Ayrıca öğrencilerin benlik saygılarının yüksek olduğu ve depresyon düzeylerinin düşük çıktığı görülmüştür.Anne-baba tutumlarının alt boyutlarından olan demokratik tutum arttıkça öğrencinin benlik saygısı artmakta, ancak koruyucu-istekçi ve otoriter tutum arttığında ise öğrencinin benlik saygısı azalmaktadır.Anne-baba tutumlarının alt boyutlarından olan demokratik tutum arttıkça öğrencinin depresyon düzeyi azalmakta, ancak koruyucu-istekçi ve otoriter tutum arttığında ise öğrencinin depresyon düzeyi artmaktadır.Araştırmanın bulgularına göre Öğrencinin benlik saygısı arttıkça depresyon düzeyi azalmaktadır.Öğrencilerin algıladıkları anne-baba tutumlarının alt boyutlarından olan demokratik tutum boyutunun cinsiyet, kardeş sayısı ve gelir düzeyi değişkenlerine göre anlamlı düzeyde farklılaşmadığı; buna karşılık anne ve baba eğitim düzeyi, ebeveynin hayatta olup olmaması ve ebeveynin medeni durumu değişkenine göre anlamlı düzeyde farklılık gösterdiği görülmüştür.Öğrencilerin algıladıkları anne-baba tutumlarının alt boyutlarından olan koruyucu-istekçi boyutunun cinsiyet, gelir düzeyi, ebeveynin hayatta olup olmaması ve ebeveynin medeni durumu değişkenlerine göre anlamlı düzeyde farklılaşmadığı; buna karşılık anne ve baba eğitim düzeyi ve kardeş sayısı değişkenine göre anlamlı düzeyde farklılık gösterdiği görülmüştür.Öğrencilerin algıladıkları anne-baba tutumlarının alt boyutlarından olan otoriter boyutunun anne eğitim düzeyi, kardeş sayısı, gelir düzeyi, ebeveynin hayatta olup olmaması ve ebeveynin medeni durumu değişkenlerine göre anlamlı düzeyde farklılaşmadığı; buna karşılık cinsiyet ve baba eğitim düzeyi değişkenine göre anlamlı düzeyde farklılık gösterdiği görülmüştür.Anahtar Kelimeler: Anne-Baba Tutumları, Benlik Saygısı, Depresyon The study on the relationship between parenting style and self-esteem and depression level on secondary school students.In this research, it is investigated whether there is a relationship between self-esteem and depression. In the research based on scanning model, it is used that parents' attitude scale developed by Kuzgun (1972) and revised by Kuzgun and Eldeleklioğlu (1993) to determine parents? attitudes according to secondary school students, self-esteem scale adapted to Turkish by Çuhadaroğlu (1985) to determine self-esteem of students, depression scale for childrens adapted to Turkish by Öy (1991) to determine depression level of students, and personal information form prepared by researcher to collect data about independent variables.The domain of research is secondary school students studying in İstanbul Fatih in the academic year 2012-2013. The sample of research is 526 student.In research, to analyze the data, independent sample t-test and ANOVA is used for parametric distribution. in cases which Anova analysis is significant, if analysis is homogeneous, Scheffe test is used; otherwise Tamhane?s T2- test is used. Furthermore, Kruskal Wallis H-test and Mann Whitney-U test are used for non parametric distribution.According to the findings of the study, it is seemed that students perceive parenting style as democratic, self esteem of students is high and depression level of students is low.Self- esteem of student is stronger as the democratic attitude of parents increases. However, if overprotective, requester and authoritative attitude is increases, self esteem is weak.Also, depression level of students decreases as the democratic attitude of parents increases. However, if preservative, requester and authoritative attitude is increases, depression level of student increases.According to the findings of the study, Self- esteem of student is stronger as depression level of student decreases.It is seemed that the dimension of democratic attitude of parents which is sub- dimension of parents? attitudes does not change significantly with respect to sex, number of siblings and the level of income. Whereas the dimension of democratic attitude change significantly with respect to the education level of parents, whether or not parents are alive and parents? marital status.It is seemed that the dimension of overprotective-requester attitude of parents which is sub- dimension of parents? attitudes does not change significantly with respect to sex, whether or not parents are alive, parents? marital status and the level of income. Whereas the dimension of overprotective-requester change significantly with respect to the education level of parents and number of siblings.It is seemed that the dimension of authoritative attitude of parents which is sub- dimension of parents? attitudes does not change significantly with respect to the education level of mother, number of siblings, the level of income, whether or not parents are alive and parents? marital status.. 14. Examining the Relationship of Social Skills, Problem Solving and Bullying in Adolescents.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationships among social skills level, problem solving and bullying in adolescents. The research is carried out according to the surveying model with a sample of 392 students (210 female and 182 male) who completed a measurement package which contained the Turkish versions of Matson Evaluation of Social Skills with Youngsters (MESSY), Problem Solving Inventory for Children and Bullying Questionnaire. Pearson product moment correlation coefficients and stepwise regression analysis were utilized in analyzing the data. While the study concluded a positive and significant relationship between positive social skills degrees and subcategories of 'trust' and 'avoidance', a negative significant relationship is observed between negative social skills degrees and 'trust', 'self-discipline' and 'avoidance' subcategories of problem solving. Moreover, as a negative significant relationship is explored positive social skills degrees and bullying behavior degrees, a positive significant relationship is found between negative social skills degrees and bullying behavior and being bullied degrees.
