The sanctity of human life mandates the replacement of individuals with robotic systems in the execution of hazardous tasks. Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), a field fraught with mortal danger, stands at the forefront of this transition. In this study, we explore the potential of robotic telepresence as a safeguard for human operatives, drawing on the robust capabilities demonstrated by legged manipulators in diverse operational contexts. The challenge of autonomy in such precarious domains underscores the advantages of teleoperation—a harmonious blend of human intuition and robotic execution. Herein, we introduce a cost-effective telepresence and teleoperation system employing a legged manipulator, which combines a quadruped robot, an integrated manipulative arm, and RGB-D sensory capabilities. Our innovative approach tackles the intricate challenge of whole-body control for a quadrupedal manipulator. The core of our system is an IMU-based motion capture suit, enabling intuitive teleoperation, augmented by immersive visual telepresence via a VR headset. We have empirically validated our integrated system through rigorous real-world applications, focusing on loco-manipulation tasks that necessitate comprehensive robot control and enhanced visual telepresence for EOD operations. • This may be the first report on the salivary CRP pattern in active duty personnel. • We introduce new parameters to describe the salivary CRP morning pattern. • A sharp decline in salivary CRP after awakening may be associated with health. • Results have implications for using salivary CRP as a marker of dysfunction. C-reactive protein is a systemic inflammatory biomarker that is positively associated with the development of disease. Salivary C-reactive protein (sCRP) has previously been reported to have a diurnal rhythm with higher levels upon awakening and lower levels thereafter. The aims of this study were to evaluate the stability of sCRP across two days, characterize the daily sCRP pattern, compute morning sCRP parameters, and evaluate associations with biobehavioral health in US Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technicians. Seventy male EOD technicians (age = 34.9 ± 6.5 years) participated in this study, which included a tablet-based survey, measures of health and fitness, and saliva collection. In a free-living setting, participants self-collected saliva on 2 consecutive days at WAKE, WAKE+30, WAKE+60, 4p.m., and 9p.m., for a total of 10 samples. Parameters (e.g., area under the curve) were computed to characterize the morning sCRP magnitude and pattern. Pearson product-moment correlation analyses were used to assess the stability of sCRP samples and parameters across the study period and to examine associations with biobehavioral health. Average sCRP concentrations for the 2-day period were evaluated using an analysis of variance with repeated measures. The stabilities between corresponding time points on Days 1 and 2 were very high (r s = 0.87–.94, all p s ≤ 0.001). sCRP concentrations were highest at WAKE, decreased by 73.6 % at WAKE+30, and then plateaued for the rest of the day. Parameter stabilities were good to excellent (r s = 0.77–.98, all p s ≤ 0.001). We also observed associations between sCRP parameters, self-reported health behaviors, and objective measures of health and fitness. In this study of a military population, we characterized sCRP as diurnal with robust stability across 2 consecutive days, which demonstrates the feasibility of sCRP as a biomarker. Large-scale explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) robotic manipulators can replace manual EOD tasks, offering higher efficiency and better safety. This study focuses on the control strategies and response speeds of EOD robotic manipulators. Using Adams to establish the dynamic model of an EOD robotic manipulator and constructing a hydraulic system model in AMEsim, a co-simulation model is integrated. This study proposes a PID control strategy optimized by the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm for a backpropagation (BP) neural network and simulates the system's step response for analysis. To address the vibration issues arising during the manipulator's motion, B-spline curves are used for trajectory optimization to reduce vibrations. The PSO algorithm optimizes the connection weight matrix of the BP neural network, solving the potential problem of local minima during the training process of the BP neural network, thereby enhancing the global search capability, learning efficiency, and network performance. Simulation results indicate that compared to traditional BP+PID control, genetic algorithm (GA)+PID control, and whale optimization algorithm (WOA)-BP+PID control, the PSO-BP+PID algorithm control rapidly tunes the PID control parameters Kp, Ki, and Kd. Under the same step function conditions, the overshoot is only 1.37%, significantly lower than other methods, and the settling time is only 14 s. After stabilization, there is almost no error, demonstrating faster response speed, higher control accuracy, and stronger robustness. Introduction Military exposures may present a cumulative load and increased individual susceptibility to negative health outcomes. Currently, there are no comprehensive and validated environmental exposure assessment tools covering the full spectrum of occupational and environmental exposures for Veterans. The Veterans Affairs (VA) War Related Illness and Injury Study Center in Washington, DC, developed the Veteran Military Occupational and Environmental Exposure Assessment Tool (VMOAT) to establish a structured, comprehensive self-report tool that captures military and non-military occupational and environmental exposures. The VMOAT is clinically insightful, modular, and flexible for adding novel exposures, meeting the needs of modern evolving threats and exposures in both clinical and research settings. This manuscript reviews the ongoing development and validation plans for the VMOAT. Materials and Methods The VMOAT is a self-reported structured questionnaire, and VMOAT 1.0 was developed to cover an individual's 3 life phases (pre, during, post-military service); 5 exposure domains (chemical, physical, biological, injuries including ergonomic, and psychological stress exposures, plus military preventive health measures); and 64 specific exposures nested within exposure categories. VMOAT 1.0 addresses exposure dose (frequency, duration, proximity, route), and can be administered online via VA approved Qualtrics survey software. VMOAT 1.0 to 2.0 updates began in December 2022 with changes focused on readability, streamlining the exposure history, refining the exposure metrics, and improving the skip logic embedded within the survey design. Results The initial VMOAT 1.0 development included face and construct validation with expert internal and external academic and military collaborators, undergoing an iterative 5-cycle review as well as sample testing among a small group of Veterans. The VMOAT 1.0 was used in Institutional Review Board (IRB)-approved longitudinal study, which has been examined preliminarily to compare the VMOAT 1.0 with other exposure assessments and to compare responses of Explosive Ordnance Disposal Veterans, a high occupational exposure cohort, to non-Explosive Ordnance Disposal Veterans. Ongoing VMOAT 2.0 updates will include integration of experiences from piloting the VMOAT 1.0 as well as additional face and content validation and survey cognitive testing with Veterans. VMOAT 2.0 data will improve the development of exposure-informed models using composite survey data to create scored- and scale-based exposure metrics for specific exposures and exposure domains. These data will highlight the effectiveness of the VMOAT as a structured comprehensive occupational and environmental exposure assessment instrument. Conclusions VMOAT development supports the 2022 Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics Act and fits into the existing VA exposure assessment approach as a standardized, comprehensive self-reported exposure assessment tool. It can be utilized as a stand-alone instrument or supplemented by clinician interviews in research or specialty evaluation programs. The collected VMOAT self-report information on military occupational and environmental exposures will allow direct evaluation with objective measures of exposure and health outcomes. Introduction Blast overpressure and accelerative impact can produce concussive-like symptoms in service members serving both garrison and deployed environments. In an effort to measure, document, and improve the response to these overpressure and impact events, the U.S. Army Medical Material Development Activity is evaluating body-worn sensors for use by the Joint Conventional Force. In support, the WRAIR completed a qualitative end-user evaluation with service members from high-risk mission occupational specialties to determine the potential needs, benefits, and challenges associated with adopting body-worn sensors into their job duties. Materials and Methods WRAIR staff led hour-long semi-structured focus groups with 156 Army, Navy, and Marine Corps participants, primarily representing infantry, combat engineer, explosive ordnance disposal, artillery, mortar, and armor job specialties. Topics included their sensor needs, concepts of operations, and recommended design features for implementing sensors into the force. Dialogue from each focus group was audio recorded and resulting transcripts were coded for thematic qualitative analysis using NVivo software. Results Users recommended a single, unobtrusive, rugged, multi-directional sensor that could be securely mounted to the helmet and powered by a battery type (such as rechargeable lithium or disposable alkaline batteries) that was best suited for their garrison and field/deployed environments. The sensors should accurately measure low-level (∼1.0 pounds per square inch) blasts and maintain a record of cumulative exposures for each service member. Discussions supported the need for immediate, actionable feedback from the sensor with the option to view detailed blast or impact data on a computer. There were, however, divergent opinions on security issues regarding wireless versus wired data transfer methods. Participants also expressed a need for the exposure data to integrate with their medical records and were also willing to have their data shared with leadership, although opinions differed on the level of echelon and if the data should be identifiable. Regarding accountability, users did not want to be held fiscally liable for the sensors and recommended having the unit be responsible for maintenance and distribution. Concerns about being held fiscally liable, being overly burdened, and having one's career negatively impacted were listed as factors that could decrease usage. Finally, participants highlighted the importance of understanding the purpose and function of the sensors and supported a corresponding training module. Conclusions Participating service members were generally willing to adopt body-worn sensors into their garrison and deployed activities. To maximize adoption of the devices, they should be convenient to use and should not interfere with service members' job tasks. Providing a clear understanding of the benefits (such as incorporating exposure data into medical records) and the function of sensors will be critical for encouraging buy-in among users and leaders. Incorporating end-user requirements and considering the benefits and challenges highlighted by end users are important for the design and implementation of body-worn sensors to mitigate the risks of blast overpressure and accelerative impact on service members' health. The object of the research is the detection of explosive objects in an image, with a particular focus on the identification of anti-personnel landmines. The objective of this research is to develop effective tools for the recognition of landmines. A mobile application for the recognition of explosive objects, trained on a deep learning model using landmine replicas, has been developed. The application was tested on images of actual landmines. The model utilized in the application exhibited a recall rate of 89% (calculated as the ratio of correctly identified landmines to the total number of landmines present in the image). The results indicated that the recall rate for a specific category of landmines was less than that observed for the others. The average time required for offline image recognition was 2.1 seconds. This paper presents the results of the evaluation of the effectiveness of the mobile application for landmine detection and classification. Furthermore, it describes the ways in which the application allows for the improvement of the model through the collection of data from users. It also describes the architecture and interface of the application, as well as an analysis of its potential applications in landmine recognition. The efficacy of the mobile application can be attributed to its intuitive interface, the high accuracy of the deep learning model, and the capacity to obtain user feedback promptly. The program enables not only the identification of hazardous objects but also the transmission of data for the enhancement of the model. The mobile application has the potential to be utilized for a multitude of tasks pertaining to the detection of explosive objects, in addition to enhancing the precision of the model. Furthermore, the app can be utilized in training centers for deminers and in mine-contaminated areas. The mobile application can be employed to identify unknown explosive objects and enhance the efficacy of deep learning models. Offshore explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) in the marine environment is a high-risk activity. Structured risk assessment (RA) can be a helpful tool to provide EOD experts with decision-making support. This paper hypothesizes that existing RA approaches that address unexploded ordnance (UXO) in the sea do not meet the requirements of EOD RA. To test this hypothesis, the paper proposes a novel categorization tool. It uses five review criteria: study type (qualitative vs. quantitative), level of decision-making (strategic vs. applied), risk component (probability vs. consequence), spatial scale (global vs. local), and temporal scale (long-term vs. short-term). The categorization tool is used to identify the requirements of EOD RA and to test whether nine existing RA methods fulfill these requirements. The study finds that none of the investigated RAs meets the requirements and, hence, concludes that a new method should be developed. However, some aspects of the existing studies should be considered when designing a new method. This includes using risk factors (type and mass of explosive material, type and state of the fuze, and water depth) that are relevant for EOD RA. In this work, the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) methodology based on the "Design for X" concept is studied to define the design criteria of the mechanical characteristics of an EOD robot and validated with a virtual prototype of an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) robot. The objective is the application of this methodology to obtain a product that meets the quality and reliability specifications, considering the user’s needs as input data. To validate this methodology, the technicians of the UDEX (Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit), the mechanical characteristics of the previous version JVC 0.2 developed by the research team of the National University of San Agustin (UNSA), the minimum specifications of the robots participating in the League of Rescue Robots and the application to work in real environments were taken as a case study. The results indicate that the application of the proposed methodology has significantly improved the quality and reliability of the design. To validate the effectiveness of this methodology, a virtual prototype, called JVC 0.3, was created using SolidWorks modelling software, a significant weight reduction of 27.13 % was achieved and the operating speed was increased to 1 km/h under optimal conditions. Technical analysis of the JVC 0.3 showed significant improvements in several key areas, such as increased modularity for easier assembly and maintenance, decreased overall weight, increased torque and speed, and increased stability during operation. EOD robots have improved these tasks, but their high cost limits accessibility for security institutions that do not have sufficient funds. This article presents the design, implementation, and validation of a low-cost EOD robot named JVC-02, specifically designed for use in explosive hazardous environments to safeguard the safety of police officers of the Explosives Disposal Unit (UDEX) of Arequipa, Peru. To achieve this goal, the essential requirements for this type of robot were compiled, referencing the capabilities of Rescue Robots from RoboCup. Additionally, the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) methodology was used to identify the needs and requirements of UDEX police officers. Based on this information, a modular approach to robot design was developed, utilizing commercial off-the-shelf components to facilitate maintenance and repair. The JVC-02 was integrated with a 5-DoF manipulator and a two-finger mechanical gripper to perform dexterity tasks, along with a tracked locomotion mechanism, which enables effective movement, and a three-camera vision system to facilitate exploration tasks. Finally, field tests were conducted in real scenarios to evaluate and experimentally validate the capabilities of the JVC-02 robot, assessing its mobility, dexterity, and exploration skills. Additionally, real EOD missions were carried out in which UDEX agents intervened and controlled the robot. This article presents risk factors that are associated with the handling of unexploded ordnance (UXO) during explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) operations in German waters. The construction of offshore wind parks and the German immediate action program are expected to increase the number of EOD operations. Existing literature and guidelines do not offer a structured and reproducible framework for assessing EOD risk. To fill this gap, a network of EOD risk factors was developed by means of a literature review and validation via expert consultation. The study was scoped to "personnel and equipment at the EOD location" as the risk receptor and "undesired detonation" as the undesired event under investigation. Factors are subdivided into UXO factors that depend on the object that should be handled and factors that describe the object's surrounding environment. While the former can be researched by an EOD expert, the latter must be measured on site or acquired from a model. Each of these factors contributes to risk, some directly and others indirectly via other factors. The complexity of the resulting network, with its 33 factors, demonstrates the need for a reliable and reproducible model to quantify EOD risk. Its purpose is not to replace EOD experts but to aid them in their decision‐making process. Such a tool can provide valuable support for the high‐cost and high‐risk EOD operations. Precise luffing of payload in mobile cranes is a crucial part of material handling and safety in industrial operations. Explosive ordnance disposal uses a bomb disposal robot to safely disable explosive devices at a safe distance. This robot is a mobile jib crane type with a gripper as an end effector instead of the typical suspension cable with a hook. The common challenge of this crane type is the arm/jib movement sensitivity with respect to tip-over stability of the crane body. This is directly influenced by the payload and constrained by the degree of freedom. This paper presents a control strategy of the joint for luffing such that the back wheels remain in contact with the surface ground and avoid bucking at any given instance of weight change in the payload. Fuzzy logic was applied to control the motor torque and luffing angle of the arm in response to the load and gripper opening size to maintain the tip-over stability margin at the highest value possible. The response curves at different configurations of the two input signals were also analyzed based on the rules set to determine its precision with respect to the expected response curve. Surgical removal of unexploded ordnance has been described in literature, usually in the context of the military. We describe a case of a 31-year-old gentleman who presented with a traumatic fireworks injury resulting in an unexploded three-inch aerial shell lodged in his left upper thigh. The sole regional Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) expert was not available, so a local pyrotechnic engineer was contacted and he helped in identification of the firework. The firework was removed without the use of electrocautery, irrigation, or metal instrument contact after skin incision. The patient recovered well after prolonged wound healing. Creativity needs to be employed in low resource settings to identify all available resources that can impart knowledge when medical training is not enough. People with knowledge of explosives can be, as in our case, local pyrotechnics engineer or can be local cannon enthusiasts, veterans, or active military personnel at a nearby military base. Introduction To address the military gap in the standardized collection of lifetime blast exposures across clinical and research endeavors, researchers at the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE) completed a quality improvement project that utilized systematic, iterative focus groups that leveraged the input from various stakeholders including subject matter experts, clinical providers, and service members (SMs) to develop a comprehensive, self-report blast exposure inventory that could be completed within 5-10 minutes. This manuscript outlines the process of the development of this inventory. Materials and Methods This project included three phases of focus groups that occurred at the NICoE between August 2020 and March 2021 to collect feedback and input from relevant military stakeholders. The study team utilized related assessments available in the literature, together with clinical experience with the NICoE patient population, to inform the development of an initial draft inventory. Phase 1 consisted of blast injury research subject matter experts who had extensive experience researching and providing clinical care to SMs exposed to blast. Phase 2 consisted of NICoE clinicians across numerous clinical specialties. Phase 3 included current active duty patients in the NICoE intensive outpatient program. Results Following completion of the focus groups, a lifetime blast exposure inventory was developed in the form of a single page table including incoming, outgoing, training, and operational exposures and broken down by levels of weapon systems as well as breaching and explosive ordnance disposal exposures. In addition, select questions related to the first and most recent blast exposures and experience as an instructor for explosive ordnance disposal- and breaching-related training were included. Conclusions Researchers at the NICoE developed a self-report blast exposure inventory through a quality improvement project that included active, ongoing participation and feedback of clinical experts and military SMs. The end result is a brief, single page inventory that can be administered within 5-10 minutes. Although additional research is needed to refine and validate the inventory, the project team believes that the tool begins to address a long-standing gap in the DoD in the standardized collection of lifetime blast exposures. The proposal of a system for the safe recovery of unexploded ordnance (UXO), chemical weapons (CW) and chemical warfare agents (CWA) dumped at sea mainly after WWI and WWII is described in this work. The proposed solution addresses the tasks required to neutralise thousands of tons of dumped material and the currently available solutions and proposed ideas. Requirements concerning the features of a recovery system are defined and scrutinised, these being intended to ensure the safety of this phase of the UXO/CW neutralisation process. To meet this requirement, the concept of a remotely operated, two-component working size underwater vehicle is proposed, supplemented by a properly sized and outfitted surface platform that is an important part of the recovery system. In order to protect people's lives and property, increasing numbers of explosive disposal robots have been developed. It is necessary for an explosive ordinance disposal (EOD) robot to quickly detect all explosives, especially when the location of the explosives is unknown. To achieve this goal, we propose a bidirectional dynamic weighted-A star (BD-A*) algorithm and a learn memory-swap sequence particle swarm optimization (LM-SSPSO) algorithm. Firstly, in the BD-A* algorithm, our aim is to obtain the shortest distance path between any two goal positions, considering computation time optimization. We optimize the computation time by introducing a bidirectional search and a dynamic OpenList cost weight strategy. Secondly, the search-adjacent nodes are extended to obtain a shorter path. Thirdly, by using the LM-SSPSO algorithm, we aim to plan the shortest distance path that traverses all goal positions. The problem is similar to the symmetric traveling salesman problem (TSP). We introduce the swap sequence strategy into the traditional PSO and optimize the whole PSO process by imitating human learning and memory behaviors. Fourthly, to verify the performance of the proposed algorithm, we begin by comparing the improved A* with traditional A* over different resolutions, weight coefficients, and nodes. The hybrid PSO algorithm is also compared with other intelligent algorithms. Finally, different environment maps are also discussed to further verify the performance of the algorithm. The simulation results demonstrate that our improved A* algorithm has superior performance by finding the shortest distance with less computational time. In the simulation results for LM-SSPSO, the convergence rate significantly improves, and the improved algorithm is more likely to obtain the optimal path. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The subject of this study is systems for detection and identification (D&I) of explosive ordnance (EO). The aim of this study is to develop a concept, general structure, and models of a robotic-biological system for D&I of EO (RBS-D&I). The objectives are as follows: 1) to classify mobile systems for D&I of EO and suggest a concept of RBS-D&I; 2) to develop the general structure of RBS-D&I consisting of robotic (flying and ground) and biological subsystems; 3) to develop models of RBS-D&I including automaton, hierarchical, and operational ones; 4) to describe tasks and planned results of the article-related scientific project; and 5) to discuss research results. The following results were obtained. 1) The general structure of the RBS-D&I. The structure comprises the following levels: control and processing centres (mobile ground control and processing centre (MGCPC) and virtual control and processing centre); forces for detection and identification (fleet of unmanned aerial vehicles (FoU), biological detection information subsystem (BDIS), and robotic detection information subsystem (RDIS)); interference; natural covers and a bedding surface; and target objects (all munitions containing explosives, nuclear fission or fusion materials and biological and chemical agents). 2) A concept of RBS-D&I. The concept is based on RBS-D&I description, analysis, development, and operation as an integrated complex cyber-physical and cyber-biological system running in changing physical and information environments. 3) The RBS-D&I automata model. The model describes RBS-D&I operating in two modes. In mode 1, FoU and BDIS operate separately and interact through the MGCPC only. In mode 2, depending on the specifics of the tasks performed, FoU and RDIS can directly interact among themselves or through the MGCPC. 4) hierarchical model. The model has two sets of vertices: EO detection and platforms equipped with the necessary sensors. 5) An operational cycle model. The model describes land release operations via a methodology of functional modeling and graphic description of IDEF0 processes. Conclusions. The proposed concept and RBS-D&I solutions can provide high-performance and guaranteed EO detection in designated areas by the implementation of an intelligent platform and tools for planning the use of multifunctional fleets of UAVs and other RBS-D&I subsystems.
